• Three semesters of calculus (differential, integral, multivariable) 
• One semester of linear algebra 
• One previous statistics course

Climate and Human Health

In addition to the general admissions requirements listed above, this program requires the following prerequisite coursework: 

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in fields with quantitative preparation
• All prerequisite coursework must be completed at or above the undergraduate level
• Master's degree or equivalent work experience for two or more years in a related field

Additional, preferred (not required) prerequisites

• One semester of calculus with a grade of B or higher
• A previous biostatistics course with a grade of B or higher

Epidemiology

Health Services Research

Master’s degree and/or relevant experience is preferred but not required. GRE scores are optional. GRE scores, if submitted, are one of many factors considered when evaluating applications. Historically, it’s often been the case that standardized entrance exams were required for entry into four-year undergraduate and graduate programs. Times are changing, however, with many institutions modifying their entrance requirements to exclude exams like the GRE. According to the National Center for Fair and Open Testing (FairTest), more than 1,400 four-year institutions no longer require the ACT or SAT 1 . Depending on the university you select, you might encounter diverse methods for waiving the GRE. The biggest advantages of applying to MPH programs that don’t require GRE test scores for admissions are that applicants don’t need to study or pay for the test and can submit their applications without having to wait for results. However, this doesn’t mean admission is easier. Students will need to demonstrate their competency and qualification in the other materials they submit, such as in their personal statement.

Determining which online MPH program is best is up to the student applying. To select the best fit for them, it’s important for applicants to thoroughly evaluate online MPH programs without the GRE requirement by considering factors such as the concentrations offered, student reviews of the online experience, and school rankings.

Students who don’t want to limit their MPH choices to no-GRE schools and have enough time for preparation may choose to take the test to demonstrate their competence. However, if the deadlines are close, applicants might concentrate on preparing and refining other application materials and forego testing.

It depends on the school, but generally applications won’t be reviewed until they are complete with materials such as transcripts, recommendations, and personal statements.

MPH programs entail a substantial quantitative workload, so the quantitative section of the GRE test may be considered most relevant. Effective communication, both verbally and in written form, along with critical thinking, is important in public health careers so approach testing with the mindset to excel to the best of your ability. Who Should Apply?

All applicants to the PhD in Public Health must hold an undergraduate or first professional degree from an accredited institution. We suggest, but do not require, that you hold either a Master of Public Health degree or equivalent graduate coursework to apply. If you do not have these credentials, you can complete the required coursework in the first year of the PhD program.

We also strongly recommend that you have some amount of applicable work and/or research experience related to public health. Although this is not a formal requirement for admission, successful applicants will usually have completed at least 2-3 years of work or research in a relevant area.

How Are Applications Reviewed?

The review process for the PhD program is holistic, taking into account all factors and experiences in a prospective student’s application and reviewing your overall potential for success in doctoral public health studies and future careers. Our review of applications examines the following characteristics:

Prior academic performance : Usually at least a cumulative 3.3 GPA in prior undergraduate and graduate programs and have received A or A- grades in quantitative courses

Work and research experience : Usually 2-3 years of relevant experience, including professional, research, publications, internships or volunteer

Statement of purpose : Evaluated for evidence that the applicant understands the program and the field, can clearly articulate professional and academic goals, and has carefully considered how the program will help them achieve those goals

Writing sample : Help the admissions committee understand the applicant’s critical and analytical skills, facility in writing, and potential as a future researcher

Recommendations : Evaluated for the extent to which recommenders indicate the applicant’s potential for advanced graduate training and career in public health

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are not required to apply to the PhD program.

Personal interview (if invited)

TOEFL scores from applicants for applicants whose native language is not English and who have not completed a previous degree at an accredited U.S. college or university; A minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test is required.

Due to the highly competitive nature of our doctoral program, meeting the following minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program.

• Applicants to the Ph.D. in Public Health program must meet the following admission criteria:
• Must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent* from an accredited college or university, or in the case of foreign students, an accredited institution recognized in its own country as preparing students for further study at the graduate level.
• Must have a minimum of a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. This GPA is calculated using the last 60 credits of undergraduate upper-division hours.
• Must have GRE** scores that are less than five years old.

**All public health doctoral programs require GRE scores except for the Environmental Health Sciences, Environmental Toxicology, or Brain, Behavior and the Environment concentrations.

*Students interested in the Biostatistics & Data Analytics concentration are required to have coursework completed in Calculus and Linear or matrix algebra. This concentration also prefers applicants with a master’s degree in applied math, statistics, biostatistics, data science, or computer science. Additional backgrounds or experience in computing language, upper-division statistics, and upper-division mathematical logic are preferred.

The Big List of No GRE Online PhD Degrees

The GRE test measures analytical reasoning, quantitative abilities, and verbal reasoning. For some, the standardized test acts as a barrier between them and graduate school. Many online Ph.D. programs require GRE scores for admission, but prospective students can also find schools offering options for an online Ph.D. with no GRE requirement.

Many fields, including business, education, psychology, and public health, make GRE scores optional or waive requirements for qualifying students. Other programs simply do not require the GRE test at all.

This article introduces the GRE exam, looks at the differences between the GMAT and GRE, and lists programs that often do not require the GRE.

What is the GRE, and Who Needs to Take It?

The GRE general test measures graduate-level skills for students pursuing degrees in the liberal arts, business, and law, among other fields. Many master’s and doctoral programs call for GRE scores as part of their admissions process. Some even set minimum GRE score requirements for admission.

The test includes three sections: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. These sections test students’ ability to analyze data, draw inferences from passages, and solve problems. Students also demonstrate their critical thinking and analytical abilities on the written portion of the exam.

Test-takers complete six total sections over the course of three hours and 45 minutes. Each section takes 30-35 minutes, including a potential unscored or research section.

The GRE uses an adaptive design and is administered digitally. During the exam, test-takers can skip and return to questions or change their answers within the section. They can also use a calculator during the quantitative reasoning section. GRE scores range from 260-340, with an average score of around 300.

It costs $205 to take the GRE and scores remain valid for five years. In addition to the general test, the GRE also offers subject tests in biology, chemistry, literature, mathematics, physics, and psychology.

The GRE vs. GMAT

Most business schools accept either the GRE or the GMAT. As a result, prospective business graduate students must decide which test best fits their needs.

The GRE and GMAT overlap in several areas. Both tests take a little over three hours, and both test students on their verbal and quantitative skills. They also both include analytical writing sections. The GRE costs $205, while the GMAT costs $250. In both cases, test scores remain valid for five years.

However, the two exams do differ in format and content. The GMAT includes an integrated reasoning section, which leans heavily on graphic data analysis, while the GRE sets a higher bar for vocabulary. In general, the GRE has a reputation for asking tougher questions on the verbal section, while the GMAT asks harder quantitative questions.

The tests use different scoring methods, as well. GRE test-takers receive score on their verbal and quantitative reasoning sections ranging from 130-170, with a separate score in analytical writing. GMAT scores range from 200-800, with most test-takers receiving scores between 400 and 600.

Reasons to Choose a No GRE Ph.D.

Many doctoral programs do not look at GRE scores to evaluate potential students. In some fields, standardized tests do not closely predict performance in graduate school. Other fields rely more heavily on experience versus test performance.

A growing number of schools no longer rely heavily on standardized tests during the admissions process. For example, more than 50 colleges and universities have dropped their ACT or SAT requirement for 2021 admissions.

Some students choose an online Ph.D. with no GRE requirement because they simply do not perform well on standardized tests. With less pressure to perform on the GRE, prospective students can spend more time on other parts of their application.

Taking the GRE requires a significant investment. Many test-takers spend weeks or months studying for the test, and skipping the GRE appeals to busy students and working professionals. Opting out of the GRE also saves students $205, plus the cost of prep materials, which can easily run over $1,000.

Finally, doctoral programs that do not require the GRE tend to emphasize academic and professional training over test scores.

Finding Test Optional Colleges

Before signing up for the test, prospective students should carefully consider whether they want to put in the time and energy to take the GRE. If you decide not to take the GRE, it’s time to start researching Ph.D. programs that do not require it.

How can you find Ph.D. programs with no GRE requirement? Prospective students should start their search early. Fortunately, many schools post their admission requirements online.

Some programs waive the GRE for students with a minimum GPA or a master’s degree in the field. In certain fields, like education, applicants with significant experience do not need to provide GRE scores. Other programs make the GRE optional for all students.

Top Online No GRE Ph.D. Degrees

Many programs offer an online Ph.D. with no GRE requirement. This section covers the major fields that commonly offer a no-GRE Ph.D. option.

In business, doctoral students can pursue a doctor of business administration (DBA) or a Ph.D. Both degrees emphasize research and require a dissertation, but the DBA generally focuses on applied business while the Ph.D. focuses on theory.

Many doctoral programs in business do not require GRE scores. However, some may require GMAT scores or an MBA degree to enter the program.

Computer Science

Earning a Ph.D. in computer science prepares graduates for leading roles in the tech industry. During a doctoral program, students study current and emerging areas of research, conduct interdisciplinary research, and develop new technologies.

While some computer science doctoral programs require the GRE, a growing number no longer ask for it as part of the application package. Many programs do require a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related field for admission.

Counseling/Psychology

The fields of counseling and psychology often require a doctorate. In a doctoral program, graduate students strengthen their analytical stills and learn to help patients cope with their environments. The degree meets the requirements for a counseling or psychology license.

Many Ph.D. programs in counseling and psychology do not require GRE scores for admission. Instead, applicants may need a master’s degree, clinical experience, and letters of recommendation.

Criminal Justice

A Ph.D. in criminal justice prepares graduates for leadership roles in the field. Doctoral students learn about criminal justice theory, administration, and the criminal justice system in practice. Depending on their focus area, students may specialize in criminal behavior, leadership theory, or homeland security.

Many criminal justice programs that offer an online Ph.D. offer a no GRE admission option. Some programs may set minimum experience requirements or waive the GRE requirement for candidates with a master’s degree.

In education, doctoral students can pursue a Ph.D. or an Ed.D. The Ph.D. is a research-focused option that leads to careers in research and academia. The practice-focused Ed.D. prepares graduates for leadership positions in educational organizations.

Education Ed.D. and Ph.D. programs without GRE requirements may expect applicants to show several years of teaching experience and a master’s degree. In particular, Ed.D. programs appeal to experienced educators.

Environmental Studies

A doctorate in environmental studies blends research and practice in an interdisciplinary field. Doctoral students conduct research in a variety of areas, designing their coursework around their focus. The degree trains students for research, academic, and policy roles.

Environmental studies Ph.D. programs with no GRE requirement may require supplemental materials, such as work experience, a master’s degree, and letters of recommendation. Most programs also set prerequisite coursework in the sciences.

In the healthcare field, doctoral students can specialize in healthcare management, healthcare administration, and healthcare economics. By bridging healthcare and business, the degree appeals to students with a variety of backgrounds. After completing a doctorate, graduates work in healthcare administration or research, including academic positions.

Public Health

Applicants pursuing a public health doctorate often do not need to submit GRE scores. However, a Ph.D. in public health with no GRE requirement may need several years of work experience in the field.

A Ph.D. in theology prepares graduates for teaching roles in seminaries, colleges, and universities. Doctoral programs emphasize theological teaching and research. Students typically concentrate their training in an area like practical theology, the New Testament, or systematic theology.

Many Ph.D. programs in theology do not require a GRE. Applicants may need to hold a master’s degree in theology and provide letters of recommendation.

Top No GRE Ph.D. Online Degrees

1. baker university.

Located in Baldwin City, Kansas, Baker University’s students often find high-paying positions in their field. The storied university boasts a close connection with the United Methodist Church, though religious courses are not required for online Ph.D. students.

BU offers several online Ph.D. no GRE programs through its School of Education. Students can choose from a doctor of education in educational leadership, leadership in higher education, or instructional design and performance. All three options take as little as 59 credit hours and three years to complete, depending on the student’s previous education and career goals.

While BU does not set GRE requirements, applicants must hold a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.5 GPA.

2. Ball State University

One of Indiana’s leading public schools, Ball State University boasts one of the lowest tuition rates in the region, particularly for students who qualify for in-state tuition. Despite the university’s low cost, Ball State maintains a low 16-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio that extends to its online programs.

Instead of offering an online Ph.D. with no GRE requirements, Ball State hosts three Ed.D. and one Ed.S. degrees in a hybrid format. The three Ed.D. options in adult and community education, educational administration and supervision, and special education all primarily use online courses. Each degree requires around 90 credits to complete, though the university only requires students to complete half of the credits at Ball State.

Ball State charges a per-credit tuition rate for its online doctoral degree with no GRE, though most students receive some form of financial aid.

3. Bradley University

A mid-sized school, Bradley University offers an array of programs at every level. The university provides a quality education to its nearly 6,000 students in the greater Illinois area.

Bradley offers some programs doctoral programs online that do not require GRE scores, including a doctor of education in higher education administration. This program takes as few as seven months to complete, and students can finish the entire program online. Courses include doctoral research requirements and internships. Learners also select a focus in higher education leadership or community college leadership, each of which leads to specific career outcomes as postsecondary educators, administrators, or leaders.

Graduate students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants also submit a short essay, a professional resume, and two letters of recommendation.

4. Concordia University-Irvine

A Lutheran school located in the Southern California city of Irvine, Concordia University-Irvine extends beyond its prime location with its online programs. Those interested in an online doctoral degree without GRE requirements can consider the doctor of education in leadership .

The Ed.D. in leadership requires 46 credits and takes three years to complete. Learners select a specialization in educational administration, organizational change, or special education. The program takes place entirely online in both synchronous and asynchronous formats, though learners can complete the degree in a hybrid format. CUI requires some fieldwork experience, which includes travel to education sites.

While students do not submit GRE scores, CUI does require a transcript proving a master’s in education, a current resume, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of intent. CUI charges a per-credit tuition rate to all online learners.

5. Concordia University-Saint Paul

Based in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, Concordia University-Saint Paul provides an affordable Christian education both on campus and online. CSP graduates regularly enjoy successful careers with nonprofits, large businesses, or entrepreneurial startups.

None of CSP’s online graduate programs require GRE scores, so students interested in the online doctorate in education can focus on other application requirements. The online Ed.D. uses a combination of synchronous and asynchronous courses and utilizes a cohort system. Learners complete 17 courses with 64 credits, with courses delivered in an accelerated, seven-week format.

Online learners must commute to the St. Paul campus for doctoral residencies on two occasions. CSP also assigns students a leadership coach to mentor learners throughout the program. Graduates of the doctorate in education go on to various leadership positions with public and private schools, nonprofits, and government organizations.

6. Creighton University

Omaha-based Creighton University is a Catholic institution and one of the top private schools in the region. Creighton offers some of the best graduate-level online programs. The Ph.D. options set no GRE requirements.

Students choose from six online doctoral degree options . Credit requirements range from 54-143 depending on the degree, and all options require at least some on-campus study. For example, the business administration doctoral program is offered in a hybrid format while the interdisciplinary leadership education degree is online, with some on-campus residency requirements.

Creighton’s online doctoral degrees use rolling admissions. Applicants must demonstrate professional experience in the desired field of study and submit a resume, two letters of recommendation, two essays, and previous college transcripts.

7. Endicott College

Located near Boston, on the water in Beverly, Massachusetts, Endicott College teaches over 5,000 students. Endicott focuses on preparing its graduates for specific careers and provides flexible learning options for busy students.

The college offers four doctoral programs online , including several no GRE Ph.D. programs. The degrees take as few as three years to complete, though many learners study part time and take longer to finish their programs. Endicott’s general doctoral admission requirements include a current resume, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts. Some programs may require additional admission materials. Each doctoral program uses synchronous online courses along with some onsite clinical experience in Beverly.

All of Endicott’s online doctoral degrees use cohort groups of 15-20 students to build teamwork skills and connect students with one another. Busy adult learners can take advantage of Endicott’s accelerated one-week courses during the summer.

8. George Washington University

Located in the nation’s capital, George Washington University attracts learners from across the world and transforms students into leaders. GW boasts an impressive list of alumni, and the school’s extensive alumni network helps new graduates find positions within their fields.

Learners choose from an array of online doctoral programs , including Ph.D. no GRE options. Most of GW’s online options are in nursing and health science, though the university does offer doctoral degrees in systems engineering, engineering management, and occupational therapy. Each program sets different graduation requirements; for example, the Ph.D. in systems engineering requires 54 credits split between class-based courses and dissertation research. The program uses synchronous online courses, with the dissertation research being self-paced.

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s and master’s degree related to their field of study. GW requires a current resume and a minimum 3.5 GPA on previous college transcripts.

9. Georgia College & State University

Founded in 1889 as a women’s educational center, Georgia College now serves as a public liberal arts college. Located in Milledgeville, Georgia College provides students with a college town atmosphere just a short drive from Atlanta.

Georgia College applicants looking for Ph.D. programs with no GRE requirement can enroll in the nursing DNP . This online post-master’s program that takes just five semesters to complete. The program requires 37 credits, and aside from a one-week immersion experience, is delivered entirely online. Learners enter the online DNP once per year in the fall and enjoy a cohort system. Students can anticipate synchronous online courses.

While applicants do not submit GRE scores, the nursing DNP program does require an active RN license, verification of a completed MSN program, and several years of work experience as a nurse. Applicants also submit three letters of recommendation, a resume, previous college transcripts, and a statement of professional goals.

10. Gonzaga University

Located in Spokane, Washington, Gonzaga University provides students with a private, Jesuit education. The university continues to add new programs, and in recent years Gonzaga has begun offering some degrees entirely online.

Gonzaga only offers one online program for students looking for Ph.D. programs with no GRE: advanced nursing . The program offers incredible flexibility, delivering all courses online and providing students with online support six days a week. The program takes most students two years to complete. Learners must complete two immersions onsite in Spokane and 1,000 hours of practicum experience. Graduates of the program find leadership positions in healthcare systems.

As a post-master’s program, the DNP requires applicants first earn an MSN in nursing and hold an active RN license. Applicants also submit a resume, letters of recommendation, and previous transcripts.

11. Lewis University

Lewis University, a private, Catholic school based just southwest of Chicago, ranks among the best-valued private schools in the region. The midsized school teaches over 6,400 students.

The university offers 17 different programs entirely online , though only one option leads to a doctoral degree: the nursing DNP. This 30-credit program comes entirely online. Students must, however, complete at least 1000 residency hours and two one-day immersions onsite in Romeoville, Illinois. Most learners complete the program in two years, and Lewis arranges various forms of tuition assistance, including assistantships, employer discounts, and Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders discounts.

While Lewis sets no GRE requirements for the program, applicants must first complete their MSN at an accredited school and hold a current RN license. Applicants also submit official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a 500-word personal essay.

12. Maryville University of Saint Louis

While based in Saint Louis, Maryville University is a prominent online school, with over half of its 10,200 students learning online. The university offers most of its programs entirely online, including several no GRE doctoral programs.

Students interested in completing a doctoral degree online can choose the doctor of education in higher education leadership. The program utilizes a cohort system, keeping students on track while connecting them with fellow learners. While the program requires a residency, Maryville allows students to finish their residency entirely online. Full-time students in the education leadership program graduate in as few as 32 months.

To help learners achieve their goals, Maryville pairs students with a personal mentor. Maryville also lets students complete their coursework and dissertation research at the same time, making this program faster to complete than others.

13. Mount Carmel College of Nursing

Founded in 1903, Mount Carmel College of Nursing offers a Catholic-rooted education to nursing students at all levels. With locations in Columbus and Lancaster, Ohio, and several options online, MCCN helps nurses across the nation achieve their career goals.

MCCN offers one online doctoral degree option : a DNP. Learners select a track in clinical practice or executive leadership. MCCN allows students to specialize even further through specializations in clinical practice, healthcare, or academic nursing. All courses in the program come online, and graduates qualify for the national EBP certification. Full-time students finish the program in just 18 months.

This program does not require GRE scores, though applicants should hold an active RN license in Ohio before applying. Application requires a resume, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and an interview. MCCN charges a flat per-credit tuition fee for all courses in the program.

14. Nebraska Methodist College of Nursing & Allied Health

A private healthcare college based in Omaha, Nebraska Methodist College educates just over 1,100 learners. NMC takes a holistic approach to nursing and healthcare, teaching students to become effective community leaders.

Doctoral students looking to avoid the GRE can choose between two of NMC’s online options : education and leadership in healthcare or public health policy. Both programs use online classes designed to give learners maximum flexibility. Full-time students finish either option in just 24 months. Along with not setting any GRE requirements, NMC does not require students to complete a dissertation for either program.

Both doctoral options require applicants to first earn a master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA, preferably in a healthcare field. Other application requirements include a resume, admissions essay, and potentially an interview.

15. Quinnipiac University

Quinnipiac University embraced online learning in 2001, helping students complete coursework without commuting to campus. The university has built on that experience and now offers a robust collection of online degrees.

Both online doctoral degrees offered by Quinnipiac — the DNP and occupational therapy doctorate — do not require any GRE scores. However, they only accept current licensed professionals in their fields who hold a master’s degree. Learners complete at least 30 credits to finish the doctoral programs. Specific requirements depend on previous credits earned. All courses are offered online, with students earning clinical experience onsite at a location of their choice. Some learners study near Quinnipiac’s campus in Hamden, Connecticut.

Applicants must complete at least 1,000 hours of fieldwork — some of which can come from applicants’ master’s degrees — and submit a current resume. Other requirements include a current license, transcripts, and a personal statement.

16. Regis College

Founded in 1927, Regis College offers a Catholic-based education to 3,000 students both online and at its Boston campus. The college offers online programs meant to prepare students for in-demand careers in fields like healthcare, education, and business.

Regis’ online DNP sets no GRE requirements and gives students four tracks of study to choose from: an MSN-to-DNP with a specialization, a second specialization route, a doctorate online, and an MSN-DNP bridge option. All four use online courses, though specializations require learners to earn clinical experience onsite at healthcare facilities. Some specialization options include pediatrics, nurse education, and psychiatric mental health.

DNP students usually graduate in 24-36 months, though Regis allows learners to take up to 44 months to complete the degree. Regis also accepts transfer credits from other regionally accredited institutions. Applicants must submit college transcripts, a resume, two professional essays, and two letters of recommendation.

17. Regis University

A Jesuit university located in Denver, Colorado, Regis University serves as one of the top private schools in the region. Regis combines Catholic values with education, emphasizing service-based learning, and the importance of helping the global community.

The university offers two online doctoral degrees with no GRE requirements: a DNP and a doctor of occupational therapy. The DNP takes 31-36 credits to complete, and Regis charges the same per-credit rate to part- and full-time learners. The school offers specializations in advanced leadership in healthcare and advanced practice registered nursing. Specific graduation requirements vary depending on the specialization. Regis works with Creighton University for the doctor of occupational therapy, and learners apply for the program through Creighton.

Applicants for both programs should first complete a master’s degree, gain ample professional experience, and hold a current license in their field. Other requirements include a minimum 3.0 GPA and a background check.

18. The College of Saint Scholastica

With online options and locations across Minnesota, the College of Saint Scholastica provides students plenty of ways to earn a degree. In fact, graduate learners make up over one-third of the total student body.

Those looking to earn an online Ph.D. with no GRE requirements enroll in the transitional doctor of physical therapy. This innovative program offers options for foreign-trained physical therapists, and nearly 25% of CSS’ online doctoral students come from abroad. The doctor of physical therapy only requires 16 credits spread over just six courses, and students complete everything online. CSS charges a flat tuition rate for the entire program, so part-time learners do not pay more.

Applicants must first hold a master’s degree in physical therapy and earn professional experience. Next, applicants submit a personal essay and previous college transcripts.

19. Thomas Edison State University

Located in Trenton, New Jersey, Thomas Edison State University began as a school designed specifically for working adults. Today, the public school continues to offer quality programs to learners of all ages.

TESU offers a doctor of nursing practice and doctor of business administration, both of which come entirely online and set no GRE requirements. The programs use a cohort system, and learners receive one-on-one mentorship from TESU leadership. The 48-credit business administration degree comes with specialization in organizational leadership, human resource management, or general management. Students complete the program in as few as 32 months. The DNP takes just 18 months to complete full-time, and TESU accepts some transfer credits for the program.

Both doctoral degrees require learners to hold a master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA in a related field. Other application requirements include personal essays, transcripts, professional experience, and an interview with TESU faculty.

20. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign educates thousands of students on campus and online. The school currently offers over 90 programs entirely online, and students from around the world complete courses.

U of I offers eight doctoral programs online , including a doctoral human resource development program. This 64-credit Ph.D. with no GRE requirements teaches the skills necessary to become leaders within their organizations. Designed for current HR professionals, the degree includes some onsite training and development. However, the vast majority of course materials are offered online.

Application requirements vary by program, but all eight online doctoral degrees require some professional experience, and most only accept applicants with a master’s degree in a related field.

21. University of North Dakota

The University of North Dakota is the largest university in ND with over 13,500 students enrolled. UND boasts some of the lowest in-state tuition rates in the nation, and classes average just 24 students each.

Students choose from 12 different online doctoral programs , and those include Ph.D. with no GRE options. For example, the Ph.D. in Indigenous studies does not require GRE scores, though applicants should hold a master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The program requires 60 credits and takes three years to complete. Students can take every course in the program online.

Other online doctoral options at UND with no GRE requirements include nursing, occupational therapy, teaching and leadership, and petroleum engineering.

22. University of Southern California

One of the best public research universities in the West, the University of Southern California attracts top talent and prepares graduates to succeed in their careers. USC’s quality extends to learners across the country through its online programs.

Learners choose from an array of online graduate programs , such as the doctor of education in educational leadership. This doctoral program with no GRE requirements helps current educational professionals at the K-12 levels become leaders within their organization. Learners complete four components, including courses and a dissertation. USC requires a two-day immersion onsite in Los Angeles, though students complete the rest of the three-year program online.

Those interested in USC’s online doctoral degrees must submit transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal essays, and a resume. While USC sets no GRE requirements, some applicants may benefit from submitting test scores.

23. University of St. Francis

Based in Joliet, Illinois, the University of St. Francis recently celebrated 100 years of education excellence. The small school teaches under 4,000 students total, and it harbors fewer than 300 graduate students. However, USF still offers two online doctoral degree programs for professionals looking to continue their education.

Neither the online DNP nor doctor of education in educational leadership require GRE scores, though applicants must hold a master’s degree in their field. Both programs utilize online education with some onsite requirements. USF also stresses flexibility for both programs. The doctor in educational leadership, for example, comes with two concentrations: superintendent endorsement or leadership, learning, and stewardship.

Both online doctoral programs take roughly three years to complete, though specific program lengths vary. Applicants should hold a minimum 3.0 GPA on undergraduate and graduate transcripts and must interview with USF faculty.

24. Villanova University

Founded in 1842, Villanova University blends its Catholic tradition with modern educational techniques. The mid-sized school hosts nearly 11,000 students, and its location near Philadelphia helps students and graduates secure internships and jobs. Those that choose to earn a degree online benefit from Villanova’s extensive alumni network.

Villanova’s doctoral nursing program, a Ph.D. with no GRE requirements, comes entirely online. Villanova offers courses in the program synchronously, and new learners must commute to campus for two-three weeks during the summer. Aside from these requirements, Villanova’s Ph.D. in nursing offers incredible flexibility.

To avoid submitting GRE scores, applicants to Villanova must hold a master’s degree related to their field. Other admission requirements include a personal essay, interview with faculty, a valid RN license, and evidence of scholarly writing.

25. Wilkes University

A small school located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Wilkes University provides learners with low classroom sizes and plenty of personal attention. Students benefit from direct instruction, hands-on learning, and flexible learning options, including Wilkes’ online doctoral degrees .

Wilkes’ two online doctoral programs with no GRE requirements — a DNP and a doctor of education — both require applicants to first complete a master’s degree. The doctoral programs require learners to commute to campus for onsite residencies, though students complete most courses entirely online. Each degree uses a cohort system, meaning students must study synchronously with fellow students. Learners usually graduate in 2-3 years.

The two programs differ in cost, with Wilkes charging separate per-credit tuition rates for each degree. Both options require applicants to submit previous transcripts, letters of recommendation, and proof of licensure/professional certification.

Online MPH with No GRE Requirements

People who have careers in public health play important roles in our society, working as epidemiologists, health care administrators, community service managers, public health educators, communications managers and more. If helping your community solve public health challenges sounds interesting to you, a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) degree may be the path that takes you there — and passing the GRE does not have to be a concern. In fact, many schools offer MPH programs with no GRE requirement.

MPH Programs that Don't Require a GRE: Application Tips and Guidance

Over the past ten years, there’s been a swift decline in the number of academic institutions that require the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) 1 . A growing number of public health graduate schools no longer require applicants to take the GRE. This became increasingly popular with the pandemic in 2020, and MPH programs are asking for relevant work experience or a previously earned master’s degree. Waiving the GRE eliminates barriers for candidates and allows for a more inclusive and diverse public health workforce 2 . 

Why Universities are Waiving the MPH as a Requirement

Many MPH programs are waiving this requirement for numerous reasons. There’s an increasing belief that GRE scores do not reflect a candidates’ intellectual ability and are more connected to their socioeconomic status 3 . The GRE doesn’t predict academic success. Studies have shown there’s weak, if any, correlation between academic success and GRE.

Moreover, Baylor University believes eliminating these GRE requirements will advance the nation’s communities “by expanding the students who graduate from public health programs and become the next generation of health professionals who make a difference” 3 . While these beliefs became apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan State has been discussing this removal of the GRE requirement since the 2018 academic year.

The dean of the University of Michigan, DuBois Bowman states: “Research tells us that high GRE test scores tend to correlate with a student’s socioeconomic status, race, and gender. The test has been shown to underpredict the success of students in underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and women in STEM fields” 4 .

The elimination of this requirement will create a more equitable and inclusive public health workforce.

MPH Programs without a GRE Requirement

Below are brief summaries of MPH Programs with no GRE requirement, and some of the highlights of each program. There are numerous other programs that are no longer requiring the GRE, so if you don’t see the institution you are looking for on this list, don’t be discouraged.

Benedictine University

This CEPH-accredited program can be taken online or on campus. It provides a flexible timeline; you can finish your degree in less than 2 years or take up to 6 years. This program waives the GRE if you have an advanced degree or a minimum GPA of 2.75 in undergrad. There are three graduate certificates you can work towards on top of your degree – Health Management and Policy, Health Education and Promotion, Epidemiology. This program works with students to create a graduate experience that is tailored to how you learn best 17 .

UNC at Chapel Hill

Ranked the number 1 public school of public health in 2022, UNC Chapel Hill MPH program offers 4 concentrations - MPH Leadership, MPH nutrition, applied epidemiology, and nutrition and dietetics. Not only is the GRE waived for the online program, but the tuition for the online program has also been lowered 6 .

Des Moines University

This online MPH charges students one flat rate for tuition and no graduate student fees. This is 100% online and allows for flexibility in scheduling. Although the program is entirely online, students can benefit from the location in Iowa’s largest city during the hands-on field work experience 7 .

George Washington University

As the only school of public health in Washington DC, the GWU MPH program is the global leader in public health education. It provides students with 6 elective course areas plus optional three concentrations – Health Informatics, Global health and women, and youth & child health. The GRE is not required through Spring 2024, but applicants can voluntarily submit their GRE test scores if they desire 8 .

Tulane University

Over 100 years of global public health experience, Tulane offers both in-person and online degrees. They continue to waive the GRE for the master’s program and offer a degree in Tropical Medicine (MPH&TM). This degree focuses on infectious disease recognition and control in tropical and subtropical regions and developing nations, which is an exclusive degree from Tulane 9 .

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU)

SNHU has some of the lowest online tuition rates in the nation and will accept up to twelve credits from previous institutions. There are no set class meeting times, which allows for flexibility and learning on your own schedule. Applicants can apply at any time and receive a decision within days of submitting all required materials – no GRE or GMAT is required. Another perk of applying: SNHU does not use the SOPHAS portal for applications 10 .

Walden University

Walden’s MPH program is CEPH accredited program and offers tuition discounts of up to 10%. Students will need to reach out to a Walden enrollment specialist to further discuss the details of this tuition reduction.  This is an example of another program that offers flexibility to log into the classroom on your own schedule. Moreover, all faculty are public health practitioners with relevant terminal doctoral-level degrees, which is a distinction few programs can claim 11 .

Liberty University

Located in Virginia, Liberty University is CEPH accredited and offers four specializations, which provides additional training in an area of your choice. The specializations are community health promotion, global health, nutrition, and epidemiology 12 .

National University

National University provides year-round enrollment. This MPH program is offered online and can be completed in as few as 18 months. There are three specializations to choose from which include health promotion, community mental health, and healthcare administration 13 .

Ohio University

This MPH program has 2 formats – a traditional full-time format and a flexible part time format. There is also an applied practice experience as part of the program, where students are placed at appropriate field sites and provided guidance throughout the duration of the practicum. Another aspect of the program is an integrated learning experience. Students work to answer a public health issue or questions that draws from not only their academic studies but their applied practice experience as well 14 .

Oregon State University

OSU’s public health program has seven on campus program options available – biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, epidemiology, global health, health systems and policy, health promotion and health behavior, and physical activity. This program is designed to be completed in 21 months or 6 terms. Another option for the working professional is to complete the program part-time, moving through it over seven years. Their online degree program can be – full-time or part-time, work on a quarter system which lasts ten weeks 15 .

University of Arizona

This degree program can be completed by full-time students in two years, and part-time students have up to six years to complete the program. There are nine concentrations offered on-campus, and three concentrations offered online, which include: applied epidemiology, health behavior health promotion, and health services administration. The GRE is waived for specific instances, such as students applying to the Health Administration concentration and for the health promotion concentration, students with 5+ years of paid public health work experience. Numerous dual degrees are also offered, such as MD/MPH, JD/MPH, and MPH/MBA 16 .

Final thoughts

All in all, removing the GRE requirement is essential to creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive public health workforce. The GRE requirement poses financial obstacles, as well as racial and ethnic biases, and has no significant correlation to academic success. Taking a detailed and holistic approach to reviewing students’ applications sans the GRE is a sweeping trend that is not losing steam anytime soon. This allows future MPH candidates to create a more realistic and comprehensive view of their unique abilities during the application process, and further expand the dynamic and strong public health workforce.

For all full-time master’s and doctoral programs administered by the Department of International Health, GRE scores will be optional, but highly recommended for applicants to the 2023/2024 academic year. The Department has elected to change our policy on standardized test scores in an effort to assist potential applicants who may have difficulty taking standardized tests because of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you already have valid GRE scores we encourage you to include them as part of your application; however, your application will still be reviewed without them. If you do not have GRE scores but instead have MCAT scores available, we encourage you to include them in your application. The GRE is now offering a  test-at-home option  in nearly all locations where the traditional internet-based test is offered. Results are available in 10 to 14 days.

The admissions committee looks at every application holistically. We take into account previous grades, types of courses taken, GRE scores, personal statement, letters of recommendation, match to program area and faculty interests, and experience. Because public health is an applied discipline, experience in low- and middle-income country settings—such as that obtained through the Peace Corps or Fulbright—is viewed favorably by the admissions committee. We also recognize that the situation of global uncertainty and disruption in response to COVID–19 may affect test-taking ability, and we will take that into consideration in admissions decisions. We encourage you to do your best on the GRE and focus on other aspects of your application which are equally important to the admissions process.

The MSPH is a department-based degree program designed for students who are looking to begin a career in global public health. It provides a foundation in core public health disciplines while allowing students to develop more specialized skills in a particular area of interest by choosing from one of our  four program areas.  The MSPH includes a practicum requirement of a minimum of four months full time.

The MPH is a schoolwide degree program designed to provide students with broad-based education in the areas of population health and disease, as well as training to work with a variety of public health issues. Applicants must have a minimum two years of experience in a health field or public health prior to applying.

The two degrees are equivalent in terms of their level of recognition and respect in the field of public health.

The PhD prepares students to become independent investigators in academic and non-academic research institutions, and emphasizes contributions to theory and basic science. Applicants must apply to one of the Department's four program areas.

The DrPH degree is no longer being offered through the Department of International Health. It is being redesigned and will be offered as a schoolwide degree for a start date of June 2017. The DrPH is designed for students with experience in the practice of public health who have already earned their MPH or an equivalent degree and want to further prepare themselves for leadership positions at federal agencies, state and local health departments, nongovernmental organizations, universities, and health care institutions.

For our master's degree progams that have reopened admissions and extended deadlines this year, we are committed to a rapid turn-around, providing an admissions decision within 7-10 days of receiving a complete application.

• Master's applicants should have at least two academic recommendations out of three. The third can be professional.
• Doctoral students can have a mix of academic and professional recommendations, and with permission from the academic manager, can submit a fourth letter of recommendation if appropriate.

The Department awards a limited number of full-tuition scholarships to incoming master's students each year in a competitive process. During the second year, after completing a minimum of 64 course credits and during the internship stage of the program, the Department automatically provides a 75% scholarship to all master's students; students are responsible for the remaining 25% of the tuition. Research and teaching assistantships may be available that can support students in selected areas. Financial support for internships varies depending on the sponsoring organization

All full-time PhD students will receive the following support for the first four years of the program: full tuition, individual health insurance, University Health Services clinic fee, vision insurance and dental insurance. By year 2 of their PhD, students must have identified and be assigned to a research or training grant.

In general, GRE scores for most students admitted average the 70 percentile in all three areas, with the average somewhat lower for MSPH students and higher for PhD and DrPH students. Undergraduate GPAs average 3.25 for MSPH students, and graduate GPAs average 3.50 for PhD and DrPH students.

It should be noted that no one factor dominates the admissions decision. The admissions committee looks at applications holistically. Factors examined include previous grades, types of courses taken, GRE scores, personal statement, letters of recommendation, match to track and faculty interests, and experience. Experience in one developing country is viewed favorably, especially for admission to the PhD program.

TOEFL scores have to be a minimum of 100 in internet-based tests.

IELTS scores must be a minimum of 7.

The MSPH in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control: a degree in hard sciences highly preferred

The MSPH in Health Systems: a degree in biological or health sciences or alternatively in management or social sciences

The MSPH in Social and Behavioral Interventions: a degree in the health or social sciences

The MSPH in  Human Nutrition – Dietitian track requires all students to have an undergraduate major in a hard science, health, or psychology. It also requires students to take 7 additional courses prior to applying (up to 2 of the courses can be done after submitting the application). The PhD in GDEC, Health Systems, and SBI require a prior master’s degree.

The PhD in Human Nutrition requires a minimum of 1 year of post-baccalaureate such as a master's degree, a dietetic internship, medical training, or other relevant work experience.

If you received a degree from an English-speaking university, you can request a TOEFL score waiver from the Academic Program Manager by email. We will review your degree and university to determine whether you will need to submit a TOEFL score or you qualify for a waiver.

The Department does not offer these options for any degree programs. While some courses are available through the Web, the programs require that students be enrolled full-time and be in residence. However, the MPH and DrPH programs offer part-time/Internet-based options.

You can enroll in these Institutes but you will have to pay additional tuition for each course. Your regular year tuition does not cover the cost of courses in these Institutes.

Those who have a DrPH and choose to go into education or management do have options for certification and continuing education. Educators can be certified as a CHES, or Certified Health Education Specialist. Managers can apply for Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification, if they desire. These certifications are the most common for this field. Public health continuing education, examinations, and certifications may be available in other positions, but it depends on the position and the field in which you work.

Graduate students tackle healthcare policy reform during new fellowship at Johns Hopkins

Three students from Liberty University’s Master of Public Health (MPH) program have spent nearly a year in an exciting new fellowship thanks to a partnership between the School of Health Sciences (SHS) and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The research fellowship at Hopkins, a collaboration between Dr. Heidi DiFrancesca, dean of Liberty’s School of Health Sciences , and Dr. Marty Makary, Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins, is designed for MPH students to conduct research on healthcare policy at the JHU School of Medicine and attend related events. The fellowship is one year long, beginning each August, and is under the direction of Makary and his research team, which includes Christi Walsh, M.S.N.-C.R.N.P., director of the Healthcare Graduate Research Program at Johns Hopkins. Makary, a pancreatic surgeon, is an outspoken proponent for healthcare reform and has given multiple Grand Rounds lectures on the topic at Liberty.

One of three students selected to particiate in the competitive fellowship, Andrea Mackenzie, saw the fellowship as a chance to fulfill her dreams of impacting the modern healthcare system in America.

“This couldn’t have been a more perfect opportunity,” said Mackenzie, who has been accepted to start her Ph.D. in Public Policy at Liberty. “It was through my (MPH) studies that I realized that one of the greatest effects we could have on the health of the nation would be in education and primary prevention, which seeks to avoids problems in the first place before they happen. It became clear to me that the policies, programs, and choices of our culture have a direct impact on health outcomes, and following a problem upstream to the source often leads to public policy opportunities.”

She joined fellow MPH students Faith Magwenzi and Asonganyi Aminkeng in the fellowship, working mainly in a remote setting, in addition to meeting together one or two times per month virtually and once a month in Washington, D.C.

“After hearing about the fellowship, I was immediately drawn to it due to the valuable skill sets that fellows would gain upon completion,” Aminkeng said. “I wanted to apply because I saw this as an excellent opportunity to enhance my knowledge and skills in public health, and it aligned perfectly with my career goals.

A core phase of the fellowship for each student was coming up with three scientific ideas presumed to be true, looking into the history of these “facts,” and determining their validity based on the researched evidence. The purpose of the exercise was to show how the practices and standards of medicine change over time, sometimes far later than they ought to, and that healthcare can and should make changes as new findings are discovered.

“We were challenged to think and question everything and research and really ask, ‘What do we know and what do we not know? What do we think we know that we get wrong?’” Mackenzie explained. “We looked back historically to see how these beliefs or conclusions came to be. We got to do a different type of research where it wasn’t just gathering publications from recent years; we were going back decades and, in some cases, centuries.”

One example that Mackenzie looked into was the history of ovarian cancer treatments that have existed since the 18th century. She read through old journals and accounts of surgeries that talked about how ovarian cancer was believed to originate in the ovaries, leading doctors to perform surgeries that remove ovaries, when recent findings point to fallopian tubes as the place where the cancer starts.

Magwenzi said this survey of scientific findings and beliefs over the centuries was a highlight for her as well.

“I have enjoyed the internship, particularly diving into literature and learning new things,” she said. “The fact that the internship challenged deeply held assumptions about health was eye-opening.”

Additionally, the students participated in three research projects, working collaboratively as each student took the lead on one of the projects. Aminkeng oversaw research on the prescribing of antibiotics in telemedicine and instances of improper dosage. Magwenzi led a project on the association between prescription rates and costs of weight-loss medications and obesity trends among Medicaid users in the United States. Mackenzie led a study on national physician cesarean section rates in low-risk deliveries.

All three projects were presented at Liberty’s annual Research Week in April. Mackenzie’s C-section research won first place in the Graduate Applied Research Poster Presentation category. Her presentation was also selected by the National Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society to be presented at the American Public Health Association (APHA) national conference in October.

During the fellowship, the students traveled to conferences where they met with professionals who are impacting healthcare policy from different angles. On Capitol Hill, the students attended a conference hosted by the Paragon Health Institute, which provides healthcare research as well as market-based policy proposals for improved outcomes in the public and private sectors. They also met with members of Congress, including Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, and sat in on hearings regarding healthcare reform. In Oklahoma City, the group attended the Free Market Medical Association’s 10th annual conference, where they met innovators who are finding alternative and efficient routes to provide patient care.

The fellowship also included lessons in searching for and writing grants, and students were able to shadow Makary in the operating room at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

“I have particularly enjoyed learning about grant writing, which is an essential skill for an aspiring public health expert like me,” Aminkeng said. “Additionally, I have developed a deeper understanding of health policy issues and health insurance challenges in the U.S. Understanding the intricate relationship between public health and the health systems in America has reinforced my commitment to making meaningful contributions to improve health outcomes both nationally and globally.”

Mackenzie said the experience of the fellowship was a “springboard” for her career: “This experience brought theory and hypothetical learning into practical reality. We met and made professional connections that are invaluable to my breadth of understanding and a future vision of hope for our healthcare system.”

“The internship awarded me a network of talented individuals and groups that I would otherwise not have access to who can be potential employers and partners in the future,” Magwenzi added. “I gained tons of research experience and as someone who wants to focus on research, the experience has been invaluable.”

DiFrancesca is excited for all the ways the students have benefitted from the experience and how they can now share it with their classmates and the department.

“Through this research fellowship collaboration, we are making an investment in the next generation of public health leaders, underscoring the (School of Health Sciences’) commitment to ensuring our students are well-prepared to tackle the multifacteted challenges of the public health landscape. This enriching experience fosters students growth as burgeoning public health professionals and researchers, equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and exposure to thrive as public health professionals capable of addressing complex health issues and contributing to evidence-based solutions.”

She also spoke about the benefits that this program brings with respect to both their academic journey and on their career trajectory.

“The comprehensive and immersive research fellowship provides a holistic learning experience through a combination of hands-on research, exposure to real-world policy and practice, interdisciplinary learning, and personal and professional development opportunities. This positions them well for successful careers in the dynamic field of public health.”

The first year of the original three-year partnership agreement is about to conclude — an agreement that includes a rigorous, competitive application process that begins with the department chair and other faculty identifying potential candidates and ends with candidates interviewing with Johns Hopkins staff.

“I am delighted to see the profoundly positive and dynamic outcome of our first year and look forward to more students having the opportunity to participate in this collaborative research fellowship in upcoming years.” DiFrancesca said.

Physical therapy graduate to serve U.S. military soldiers and veterans

Growing up in Canada, Lemir Lira felt like he got to travel the world without even leaving his hometown. “Toronto was such a diverse and multicultural city that exposed me to different foods, music and customs,” he says.

After studying psychology at York University, Lira moved back to Houston, Texas, where he was born. He spent a couple years working with youth in underserved communities before enlisting in the U.S. Army.

Following Basic Training and Airborne School, Lira found himself stationed at Ft. Liberty in North Carolina. He also found himself afflicted by some minor orthopedic injuries and setbacks.

“This is where my exposure to physical therapy in the military setting began, and I had my ‘lightbulb’ moment realizing I could combine my two passions of continuing military service with the pursuit of a career in health care,” Lira says. “I had a new mission: to serve my fellow soldiers as a physical therapist when they were at their most vulnerable.”

While continuing his military service – first as a paratrooper with the U.S. Army National Guard and then as an infantry sniper with the SC Army National Guard – he began looking into Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs.  The Department of Exercise Science ’s research-oriented curriculum and its warm and welcoming staff put the Arnold School at the top of his list.

“I was very happy to hear that USC is known to be a very military-friendly institution, which allowed me to balance being a member of the SC Army National Guard while simultaneously juggling my academic studies,” Lira adds. “I was very lucky to be provided the opportunity to select clinical sites that best aligned with my goal of serving military veterans and active-duty service members.”

Rotating among sites like Shaw Air Force Base and the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Lira says he received outstanding mentorship from all his clinical instructors. He particularly connected with Matthew Geary , Cathy Arnot and Alicia Flach .

I was very lucky to be provided the opportunity to select clinical sites that best aligned with my goal of serving military veterans and active-duty service members.

“I cannot give enough thanks to my amazing program clinical director, Dr. Geary, who always made himself available to meet and discuss clinical site placements that best aligned with my future career goals,” Lira says. “I had a marvelous research supervisor, Dr. Arnot, who put my mind at ease when working on our final program research project. Lastly, I was very fortunate to have been paired with a faculty mentor, Dr. Flach, who continues to inspire me today to break barriers and advocate for our patients and the PT profession.”

After graduating this month, Lira plans to specialize in orthopedics and become a Physical Therapy Officer in the U.S. Army to serve the military members who sacrifice so much and work tirelessly to keep the country safe. He’ll miss the gorgeous campus, the capital city’s vibrant food scene and strolls along the Congaree River.

“My experience at USC’s Columbia campus has been amazing from beginning to end, and the DPT program was designed with the student in mind,” says Lira, who appreciated the small class sizes and mentorship from faculty and upper-class members from day one. “I know that my degree and time spent at USC has best prepared me to serve soldiers by instilling in me the importance of seeking the most current evidence-based PT practices.”

Master of Social Work/Public Health

What is the msw/mph joint degree program.

The joint degree program is collaboration between the School of Social Work and the School of Public Health, Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences. Students graduate with both a Master of Social Work and Master of Public Health degrees and are prepared to pursue a wide range of social work and public health careers to improve the health of a target population and/or community. Students participate in class work, practicum placements, and leadership seminars to acquire the knowledge and skills to address health problems.

What principles guide this program?

The program has a strong commitment to social justice, the elimination of health disparities, and a holistic definition of community and population health, including individuals’ physical health conditions and the behavioral and social ecological determinants of health.  Moreover, both social work and public health share a commitment to involving consumers/community members in the development of policies and in the planning, delivery and evaluation of health promotion interventions, health behavior change, and health education.

What are the advantages of the program?

• Students develop knowledge, values and skills for  both  professional social work practice and (e.g. direct practice or community organization/social administration) and community public health practice (e.g. primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention).  
• Advising and mentoring focuses on supporting students to achieve their professional goals (e.g., selection of practicum placements, papers written as part of course-work, leadership training activities, focus of final thesis/essay in the MPH program).
• Students increase their career marketability as a result of being able to work from a cross disciplinary perspective. Students have gone on to jobs, for example, in various social service organizations, health departments, other government agencies, academic institutions, think tanks, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

• 18 practicum placement credits representing two separate practicum placement experiences, foundation and concentration, coordinated by the School of Social Work, Office of Practicum Education.

Note:  Students register for two years (two fall and spring semesters) through the School of Social Work and one year (one fall and spring semester) through the Graduate School of Public Health. You are eligible for funding through the School of Social Work for a maximum of 2 years (these are the two years you register through that school).  You must be registered for  at least 9 credits  in the School of Social Work during the two years you register in that school to be eligible for funding from the School of Social Work.  You must have both school advisors approve your course schedule each term. Your advisor in the School of Social Work will lift your “hold” to register each term.

Classes and Requirements

IUP’s MS in Health Services Administration degree program consists of 36 credits. It offers a blend of classes and coursework from the Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions and the Department of Employment Relations and Health Services Administration, with faculty members from both departments .

In this degree program, you’ll have the option to complete internships to replace up to six credits of electives. You’ll also have the option to complete a master’s thesis, something you should strongly consider if you expect to go on to a doctoral program.

In addition to a range of electives, there are five required courses:

• Epidemiology in Health Services Administration –Explore concepts of epidemiology, identify data sources, and interpret epidemiological research findings and the application of epidemiology to health services administration.
• Ethics and Social Issues in Health Care –Understand the ethical imperatives as they apply to the provision of health services in the twenty-first century.
• Health Law –Learn the legal language of health care, including tort law, and the issues and sanctions of state and national health care laws as applied to individuals and organizations.
• Health Policy –Examine legislative, regulatory, and political processes in health policy development at the federal, state, and local levels.

Human Resource Management in the Public Sector – Get an in-depth analysis of human resource management with an emphasis on public-sector organizations and a focus on the job functions and issues facing human resource professionals and organizations.

Admission Criteria, Requirements, and Process

Admission criteria.

• A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6 or higher (if a bachelor's degree was earned within the last five years) is required. If you graduated over five years ago, a cumulative GPA of 2.4 or higher is required.
• Earned bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
• Evidence of coursework in statistics and research methodology and design is strongly recommended.

Application Requirements

• Two letters of recommendation. If your bachelor's degree was earned within the last five years, at least one letter must be from a faculty member or the dean/director of the undergraduate program. If your degree is older than five years, both letters must be from employers or professional colleagues.

Early Admission: Get a Head Start on Your Advanced Degree

If you're a bachelor’s degree student at IUP and expect to pursue a Master’s in Health Services Administration, you’re encouraged to apply for early admission. To do so, you’ll need to:

• Be in the semester in which you’ll earn your 60th credit (typically 2nd semester sophomore year).
• Have earned at least 15 credits in your major.
• Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.

This is also a great option if you believe your major is not matching job aspirations and health care is a potential career interest.

Consider Dual Master’s Programs

Add an MS in Human Resources and Employment Relations to your MS in Health Administration coursework and count 18 credits toward both programs. You’ll deepen your HR knowledge and broaden potential employment opportunities in health care or other fields.

Students cannot often earn two master’s degrees at once, but with our flexible and convenient MS in Health Services Administration, adding a second master’s degree is possible. And you can complete both in as little as 21 months.
