Master of Science in Agricultural and Applied Economics

Degree requirements

The ACE M.S. program offers considerable flexibility. Students using the degree as a foundation for a doctorate emphasize economic theory and analytical research tools. Students seeking the terminal master's degree focus their study on the concepts and analytical techniques used by analysts and managers in industries, governments, and other organizations.

Our students’ research uses economics to address important social and economic challenges. Thesis and dissertation topics include designing policies for environmental protection and resource management, evaluating international efforts to reduce poverty and hunger, and enhancing the performance of commodity and speculative markets.

Although teaching is not a general Graduate College requirement, experience in teaching is considered an important part of the graduate experience in this program and is strongly recommended for those intending to pursue an academic career.

Students admitted to the M.S. program with exceptional credentials may choose to pursue courses of study leading to transfer into the Ph.D. program. This Straight through M.S. to Ph.D. option involves taking challenging doctoral courses in the first year. Careful planning with a faculty advisor is important. Students who are accepted for transfer discontinue work toward the M.S. degree.

  • UNdata The Statistics Division is committed to the advancement of the global statistical system. We compile and disseminate global statistical information, develop standards and norms for statistical activities, and support countries' efforts to strengthen their national statistical systems. We facilitate the coordination of international statistical activities and support the functioning of the UN Statistical Commission as the apex entity of the global statistical system.   • World Bank Data The data catalog provides download access to over 2,000 indicators from World Bank sources.
  • CEIC Data Manager CEIC Data contains economic, industrial and financial time-series data. Our Global Database offers unprecedented coverage of 221 countries in Asia, Europe and Central Asia, Middle East, Africa and the Americas. EIC also offers 18 macro-economic concepts, and 1,400,000 time series. Data comes from analysts on the ground and the prime national and regional statistical agencies and major industrial data issuing organizations of each country covered. The CEIC Data Manager provides access to the entire CEIC database from within the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet application. Times-series can be directly retrieved from the database and imported into Excel for quick analysis.
  • USDA Economics, Statistics and Market Information System The USDA Economics, Statistics and Market Information System (ESMIS) is a collaborative project between Albert R. Industrial Organization of the Agri-Food System

The industrial organization program focuses on issues pertaining to the industrialization (fundamental transformation) of the agri-food system that is driven by changes in consumer preferences, technological progress, global competition and reduced government support to agriculture.

International Trade and Development

Welcome to the Spring 2024 Purdue Agricultural Economics Report! This year is the fourth installment of the Graduate Student Research edition, where we showcase the work of master’s and doctoral students in the Department of Agricultural Economics.

The 2023-2024 academic year has been a time of change within the graduate program. In the first article of the issue, interim graduate program chair, Dr. Carson Reeling, and MS-MBA director, Dr. Brady Brewer, share a “State of the Agricultural Economics Graduate Programs,” covering leadership transitions, awards, and placements of graduating students.

In the remainder of the article, we highlight graduate student research across several topic areas. The first section focuses on the outlook and management of family and agribusinesses. Joshua Strine discusses trends in agricultural job openings using unique data obtained from scraping job posting websites. William Walls interprets results from the Small Business Values Survey to show factors that might explain differences in income across family businesses. After collecting data at Purdue’s annual Top Farmer Conference, Margaret Lippsmeyer shows correlations between producer sentiment and farm resilience. Turning to the broader sector, Binayak Kunwar analyzes the firm financial health of publicly traded agribusinesses, looking at financial ratios.

The next section turns to topics relating to the environment: conservation practices and carbon. My article examines three incentive programs for the adoption of conservation practices. Morgan Mastrianni models another kind of incentive mechanism: carbon-linked bonds. Finally, we close the issue with two papers focused on modeling organization and market structure. Yi Wang explains the WIC program as it pertains to infant formula and how market structure may influence the surplus for players within the system. Dewey Robertson utilized the GTAP framework to evaluate the impact that Mexico’s proposed GMO ban might have on the corn trade.

Farmland prices increase despite downward pressure.

Indiana farmland prices reached record highs in 2024, with top-quality land averaging $14,392 per acre, a 4.8% increase from 2023, according to the Purdue Farmland Value and Cash Rent Survey. Regional variations and market forces like high interest rates and low land supply influenced the market, while long-term projections suggest continued modest growth. Transition land saw a significant 21.6% rise, while recreational land values dipped slightly.

Trends in Farmland Price to Rent Ratios in Indiana, 2024

Farmland prices in west central Indiana increased slightly in 2024 (0.2%) and are 19.7% above the previous peak in 2014. Compared to the farmland price in 2007, current farmland prices in west central Indiana are 187% higher. Farmland prices are influenced by many factors, including net income, growth in earnings, crop and livestock prices, interest rates, alternative investment returns, inflation, liquidity, agricultural policy, and energy policy. Cash rent, which is influenced by net return to land, along with interest rates, is often referred to as a fundamental factor impacting farmland prices.

Farmland Conversion in Indiana

Farmland conversion is a key factor influencing Indiana’s farmland market in 2024, with large public and private projects driving up land prices. This article explores the impact of land transitioning out of agriculture on market values, comparing current trends to historical data. Discover how the demand for development, coupled with economic forces like interest rates and crop prices, is shaping the future of Indiana’s farmland and its availability for agricultural production.

Master of science in agribusiness economics.

SIU Agribusiness Economics

For those who wish to further their careers or start their profession at a more advanced level, SIU offers a Master of Science degree in Agribusiness Economics. Through more intensive and focused classwork and applied study, our challenging program explores the business, financial, and management sides of the private and public agricultural sectors and the agencies that serve them.

Our master program has an accelerated degree option that allows you to complete it in about 12 months.  We also partner with our College of Business and Analytics' MBA program to offer a concurrent degree program option.

Master of Science

A master’s degree is awarded upon completion of required coursework with a minimum graduate grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale) in one of two options – a thesis or a non-thesis (research paper) option. For both options at least 15 hours must be at the 500 level.

Accelerated Degree

The Accelerated Master of Science degree with a major in Agribusiness Economics allows motivated and high-achieving students to complete the program in about 12 months beyond their BS. As early as sophomore year, junior year for transfer students, a student working with a faculty advisor will develop a program of study consistent with the student’s interest and goals. To complete the Accelerated MS Degree nine credit hours of 400 ABE classes are double counted toward an undergraduate and a master’s degree. Twenty-one hours are taken after undergraduate graduation.

Concentrations:

With an array challenging courses and exciting research opportunities in specialized concentrations including resource and environmental economics, economic and rural development, agribusiness management and finance, agricultural marketing and prices, farm production management, and international trade and agricultural policy, this concentration encourages students to select coursework pertinent to their education and career goals.

Agricultural Services

This concentration offers current agribusiness professionals the opportunity to increase their specific agricultural services subset and helps new professionals start higher up in the industry and helps open the door to career advancement and a wide range of job opportunities. Professionals such as agricultural extension workers, soil conservation employees, those in mechanization-related industries, and agricultural environmental services often choose this path to diversify their knowledge and experience.

Concurrent Degree Option

The concurrent graduate degree program is a very popular, interdisciplinary course of study offered by the Agribusiness Economics program and the College of Business and Analytics at Southern Illinois University.

Students complete the requirements as a double degree major, in order to receive two master's degrees: the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) and Master of Science (M.S.) with a major in agribusiness economics.

Graduate students are required to write a research paper or thesis (depending on degree option). This is a unique opportunity to work with a faculty member on a focused topic. Influence of location and land geometry on the prices of agricultural land (M.Sc.-thesis)

The selling prices of agricultural land should be orientated towards the future revenues to be generated. The correlation between land size and land prices has been the focus of several studies in the past. Hedonic valuation methods have been used to identify factors influencing the price of agricultural land. In addition to the size of the land, the type of land (arable land/grassland), the type of buyer (agricultural/non-agricultural) and the quality of the land also influence the price. However, the question arises as to whether the area size can adequately reflect the influence of the area geometry on the cultivation costs. This is because the cultivation costs per hectare are not only determined by the size of the land, but also to a large extent by the shape of the land. In addition, the transport costs per hectare increase with increasing distance and poor accessibility (road quality, gradient, waiting times). The following research questions arise:

  • Is there a connection between the shape of the land and the selling price of agricultural land?
  • Do transport costs influence the price of land?
  • Are the prices of agricultural land orientated towards the management costs per hectare?

As part of this Master's thesis, your task is to map the current state of scientific knowledge on the factors influencing the prices of agricultural land. You will research available databases that link land prices with geodata (location). You will prepare open access data on land prices and use innovative computer software to calculate the management and transport costs of agricultural land, taking into account the geometry and location of the land. You will set up a simple econometric model in order to analyse the relationship between land prices and land geometry, or the actual cultivation costs, for the first time. Depending on the data available, you will control for other influencing factors that have proven to be significant in central studies in this field of research.

Your learning environment

You will have the option to specialise in a development pathway that will provide you with an area of particular expertise within agricultural development economics. You can also choose from a diverse range of modules that aim to give you the knowledge and skills you need to have an impact and be part of global change.

You can choose to undertake an optional placement during semester 2, as well.

Class sizes vary by module, but emphasis is always placed on good contact with lecturers.

Entry requirements

IELTS:  6.5 overall with no element less than 5.5 (or equivalent)

Normally a good undergraduate honours degree (high 2:2 or above), or equivalent from a university outside the UK. Applicants who have relevant career experience are also welcome to apply.

You will need an intermediate knowledge of microeconomics and quantitative methods, however, strong applicants with little or no training in economics may be admitted, provided you attend a pre-sessional economics course.

Students may join immediately after their undergraduate degree, or after some years of employment to enhance career prospects by acquiring further skills.

Please note: If you have little or no training in economics, you may be admitted if you attend our pre-sessional economics course.

Dissertation.

Explore and independently research a topic of your choice, integrating your course knowledge with guidance from an academic supervisor. 

Econometrics

Learn how to effectively translate data, specify econometrics models for research questions, conduct hypothesis testing, interpret results critically, and use software for econometric analysis across various data types. 

Environmental and Resource Economics

Acquire a foundation in resource and environmental economics, and the essential tools to apply economic principles to real-world challenges at the intersection of people, the economy, and the natural environment. 

Consumers, Producers, Markets and Trade

Apply rigorous microeconomic reasoning to analyse consumer, producer, market, and trade behaviours, exploring internationally recognised case studies and research topics. You’ll delve into key concepts of behavioural economics and theoretical aspects of international trade. 

Optional modules

Rethinking agricultural systems.

Develop your knowledge of contemporary agricultural systems by integrating ecology and environmental science with social, economic and policy-governance considerations. You’ll learn about the state of twenty-first century agriculture in different parts of the world, and in a range of ecological and socioeconomic contexts. 

Energy, Climate Change and Development

Explore the social and economic factors behind climate change, and critically assess solutions using ecological and energy economics. You’ll gain the ability to analyse causes and evaluate mitigation and adaptation policies.  

Microfinance

Critically review microfinance services for the rural and urban poor, assess financial market players, and evaluate proposals for sustainable institutions. You’ll examine the effectiveness of microfinance as a tool for aiding the disadvantaged by studying its proposed impacts. 

Development Finance

Examine the impact of domestic and international financial systems on economic development, and analyse trends and policy issues in development finance.You’ll also evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various funding sources available to governments in developing countries. 

Food Policy and Supply Chain Management

Investigate food policy and supply chain management, focusing on the impact of regulations. Analyse government intervention, assess strategies for addressing issues like unhealthy diets and food safety. You’ll also develop critical thinking skills to evaluate the effectiveness of policies in modern food supply chains. 

Food Security and Development

Explore the complex, yet crucial relationship between food and global development. Gain a broad but comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with producing, accessing and consuming food in different parts of the world.  

Nudge, Motivation and Behaviour Change

Explore and evaluate theories, models and techniques for behaviour change including when, how and where to apply them appropriately, ethically and effectively, in order to formulate appropriate behaviour change strategies.  

Appraisal of Agricultural and Rural Development Projects

Explore the role project appraisal in development, and its financial, economic, and social aspects. You’ll also understand the need for integrating environmental assessments, and explore macroeconomic, policy, and management factors in developing countries. 

Ecosystem Services and Nature-based Solutions

Explore ecosystem services, nature-based solutions, and their benefits through case studies. Discover how to optimise ecosystem service delivery, especially in climate change adaptation, with a focus on policy, governance, and stakeholder engagement. 

Global Environmental Change Justice and Development 

Dive into the interconnected world, examining the trade-offs between environmental change and social justice. Through conceptual frameworks and engaging case studies, you'll develop expertise in understanding and addressing socio-environmental challenges. 

Development Economics

Focus on both microeconomic and macroeconomic issues of development and gain a theoretical and empirical foundation to the economics of developing countries. You will be exposed to research in different facets of development economics that use a wide range of research methods.

Economics of Public Policy

Discover key micro- and macro-economic tools and concepts for the analysis of public policy and apply them to a range of problems. You’ll examine policies according to efficiency and equity criteria, and debate current public policy issues through seminars.

The Collaborative Masters in Agricultural and Applied Economics (CMAAE) programme was launched in 2005 and covers 17 Departments of Agricultural Economics in the Eastern, Central and Southern African countries. The programme aims at producing MSc Agricultural and Applied Economics graduates with the knowledge and skills for transforming the agro-food sectors and the rural economies of the region in an environmentally sustainable fashion thus contribute to addressing the persistent problems of food and nutrition insecurity, and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.

The CMAAE is a full-time course study with the first two semesters comprising core courses taught at the accredited university offering the degree. Upon successful completion of the core courses, all students assemble at the Shared Facility for Specialization and Electives (SFSE) – now virtual since the advent of the COVID19 pandemic- to study elective courses and engage in thesis development in the third semester. The students then return to their host universities to complete thesis research and graduate. Upon graduation, the alumni are further engaged in dissemination and internship activities when resources allow.

The Course Structure

  • Semester I and II Core courses taught at the degree-awarding institution in the first year for a period of 9 – 12 months.
  • Semester III Elective courses intensively taught by African scholars and leading international experts for a period of 16 weeks at the CMAAE Shared Facility for Specialization and Electives (SFSE).
  • Semester IV Thesis Writing at the respective degree awarding institutions for a period of 9 months in the second year of studies after completion of core and elective courses.
  • Post-graduation, the alumni are supported to share their thesis research findings in national thesis dissemination workshops, where farmers, mid-level policy makers, and development partners, among others, participate for dialogue and discussion of the implications of the research outputs.
  • The graduates are also supported to undergo an internship programme at reputable institutions for induction into the work environment of agricultural policy research, policy formulation and implementation.

CMAAE Elective Courses

The CMAAE programme has a rich menu of 20 elective courses spread over four cluster or specialization areas, namely Agribusiness Management , Agricultural and Rural Development , Agricultural Policy and Trade, and Environmental and Natural Resource Management. Each of the specialization areas has a foundation course, one or two common courses and three to four elective courses as presented below.

A total of 17 public universities in 13 Eastern, Central and Southern African countries participate

in CMAAE. These universities are classified into two categories, category A and category B. Students in category A universities enroll for CMAAE studies in any of the 8 category B universities that are accredited to offer core courses and supervise theses research. The students in category B universities then jointly undertake elective courses at the Shared Facility for Specialization and Electives (SFSE) for a period of four months upon completion of their core courses. Apart from admitting and issuing degrees, the CMAAE non-accredited departments participate in all other programme activities including faculty research, faculty retooling, Academic Advisory Boards, and curriculum reviews, among others.

Application for Admission and Scholarships

Call for CMAAE scholarship applications are posted on the AERC website in February each year. An applicant must have an admission letter from a CMAAE-accredited (Category B) University whose contact details are below. To enable cost effectiveness of scholarship awards, nationals with CMAAE-accredited universities in their countries are required to apply for admission to those universities. However, nationals who don’t have CMAAE-accredited universities are encouraged to apply to an accredited University of their choice.

  • Have attained at least a Second-Class Honours (Upper Division) or equivalent in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness management or related field from a recognized university; and
  • Female and applicants from post-conflict and fragile states are highly encouraged to apply.
