Key Components of an Effective Finance Intern Cover Letter

The perfect cover letter isn't about using flashy words or complex jargon. It's about clarity, sincerity, and showcasing your potential. Here's a breakdown of the crucial components you need to include:

1. Direct Address: Begin with "Dear Hiring Manager." It's formal, respectful, and direct. Avoid any generic salutations like "To whom it may concern."

2. State Your Purpose: Start by mentioning you're "applying for an internship" in finance. Be clear about your intentions from the outset.

3. Showcase Your Skills & Achievements:

  • Financial & Data Analysis: Mention any projects or coursework highlighting your proficiency in these areas. Did you excel in a financial modeling assignment? Talk about it!
  • Accounting Principles: Express your understanding and how you've applied them in academic scenarios.
  • Analytical Skills & Attention to Detail: Have you identified a mistake in a case study that others overlook? Such instances demonstrate your keen observation skills.
  • Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Have you led group projects or presentations? These experiences show you can work well with others and articulate your ideas.

4. Relate Your Educational Background: Connect your academic achievements with how they've prepared you for real-world challenges in the finance industry. For instance, if you undertook a project on stock market trends, discuss what it taught you about the dynamics of the financial world.

5. Conclude with Confidence: Finish strong. Reiterate your interest in the position and your belief that you'd be a valuable asset to the team.

Every word in your cover letter should serve a purpose. Keep it concise. Ensure it's free of typos. Ensure every sentence pushes the narrative that you're the right fit for the finance internship.

Tips to Make Your Cover Letter for Finance Internship Stand Out

Crafting a cover letter for a finance internship can be daunting. Afterall, it is the first impression you'll make on a hiring manager. But fear not! Let's break down some pro tips that can elevate your cover letter from good to exceptional.

1. Address the Right Person

Starting with a generic "To Whom It May Concern" isn't ideal. If possible, research the hiring manager's name. "Dear Hiring Manager" is an acceptable alternative if the name isn't available, but personalizing always creates a better impression.

2. Proofread, Proofread, Proofread

Attention to detail is paramount in finance. Any spelling or grammar mistakes can be a red flag. Consider using tools or getting a fresh pair of eyes to review your letter.

3. Quantify When Possible

Numbers speak volumes in the finance world. If you've achieved specific results in your projects or coursework, mention it. For example, "I enhanced financial model accuracy by 15%."

4. Be Genuine in Your Passion

Instead of stating, "I am passionate about finance," illustrate why. Was it a specific event, a course, or a personal experience that sparked this interest?

5. Tailor Your Letter

One-size-fits-all doesn't apply here. Each company has its unique values and culture. Highlight experiences and skills that align with the specific company's ethos and job description.

6. Keep It Concise

While sharing every accomplishment may be tempting, your cover letter should be a snapshot. Stick to the highlights that are most relevant to the internship. Ideally, keep it to a single page.

7. Use Keywords but Don't Force Them

Remember the list of keywords you're armed with? Use them naturally within your letter, especially if they align with the internship's requirements. This can also help if the company uses applicant tracking systems.

8. Close with Confidence

End your letter reiterating your enthusiasm and inviting further discussion. Instead of a passive "I hope to hear from you," try "I am eager to explore how my skills align with XYZ Company's goals and would welcome the opportunity to discuss further."

Enhance your cover letter skills by delving into our wide selection of blogs, catered for varied positions and internships. Dive deep, absorb, and transform your writing journey.

Key Takeaways:

  • Personalize: Address the right person and tailor your cover letter to the specific company.
  • Highlight Value: Showcase relevant coursework, projects, and both soft and technical skills.

The format of your financial analyst intern cover letter: structure, fonts, margins, and more

Your financial analyst intern cover letter should include a header (with your name, position, and date); a greeting and introductory paragraph; a body and closing paragraphs; and an optional signature.

Remember that you're writing your financial analyst intern cover letter for recruiters - as the Applicant Tracker System won't scan this content.

Here are a few more tips and tricks to keep in mind when formatting your financial analyst intern cover letter:

  • Use the same font in your financial analyst intern cover letter and resume . We recommend modern fonts, e.g. Lato and Rubik, to help you stand out, instead of the stereotypical Arial and Times New Roman.
  • Each paragraph should have single spacing, which is already set up for you in our cover letter templates .
  • Our cover letter builder follows industry standards for your financial analyst intern cover letter formatting - with a one-inch margin, surrounding your content.
  • Always export your financial analyst intern cover letter in PDF to ensure the image or text quality stays the same and your writing isn't moved about.

  • Opening Greeting: It is imperative to address the recruiter or hiring manager by name if possible, as it demonstrates attention to detail and the effort to personalize the communication, traits highly valuable in a financial analyst intern role.
  • Introduction: The introductory paragraph should grab the recruiter’s attention by briefly stating the applicant's passion for finance, relevant educational background, or interest in the company’s financial operations, which indicates a genuine interest in the specific role and company.

  • Closing: In the closing section, the applicant should reaffirm their enthusiasm for the role, include a call-to-action such as a request for an interview, and thank the recruiter for their time, showing both eagerness to engage further and professional courtesy.

Kick off your financial analyst intern cover letter: the salutation or greeting

When writing your financial analyst intern cover letter, remember that you're not writing for some complex AI or robot, but for actual human beings.

And recruiters, while on the lookout to understand your experience, would enjoy seeing a cover letter that is tailored to the role and addresses them . Personally.

So, if you haven't done so, invest some time in finding out who's the hiring manager for the role you're applying to. A good place to start would be LinkedIn and the corporate website.

Alternatively, you could also get in touch with the company to find out more information about the role and the name of the recruiter.

If you haven't met the hiring manager, yet, your financial analyst intern cover letter salutation should be on a last-name basis (e.g. "Dear Mr. Donaldson" or "Dear Ms. Estephan").

A good old, "Dear HR Professional" (or something along those lines) could work as your last resort if you're struggling to find out the recruiter's name.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Recruiting Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Hiring Committee,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear [Full Name of the Person],
  • Dear [Job Title],

Using your financial analyst intern cover letter intro to show your dedication

Try to describe exactly what you enjoy about the potential role.

A positive attitude from the get-go will help you stand out as a motivated financial analyst intern professional.

What comes next: your financial analyst intern cover letter middle paragraphs

In the next three to six paragraphs (or the body of your financial analyst intern cover letter) you have to prove your unique value .

Most candidates tend to mess up at this stage. They tend to just copy-paste information from their resume.

That's one big no-no.

So, look back on key job requirements and write down a list that includes the ones you cover.

Next, select just one key achievement from your professional (or personal) history that meets those advert keywords.

Narrate a story around how you've grown your skill set and knowledge. Also, aim to show the unique understanding or soft skills you bring about, thanks to your past success.

Thinking about the closing paragraph of your financial analyst intern cover letter

Before your signature, you have extra space to close off your financial analyst intern cover letter .

Use it to either make a promise or look to the future.

Remind recruiters how invaluable of a candidate you are by showing what you plan to achieve in the role.

Also, note your availability for a potential next meeting (in person or over the telephone).

By showing recruiters that you're thinking about the future, you'd come off as both interested in the opportunity and responsible.

Financial Analyst Intern cover letter advice for candidates with no experience

If you're worried about writing your Financial Analyst Intern cover letter and have no professional experience , we sure have some advice for you.

Turn recruiters' attention to your transferable or relevant skills gained thanks to your life and work experience.

Instead of writing about past jobs, focus on one achievement (whether from your volunteering experience, education, etc.) and the skills it has helped you build.

Alternatively, you could focus your Financial Analyst Intern cover letter on your career objectives and goals. Always remember to make those relevant to the job you're applying for by detailing how you see yourself growing as part of the company.

Recruiters would be way more impressed with candidates who fit the job profile and can bring about plenty of skills and vision to the table.

  • Tips for Writing Your Cover Letter

Sending an Email Cover Letter

If you are an undergraduate applying for an internship in the finance industry, you'll likely need to write a  cover letter .

This part of your internship application should be customized to the specific role. Your cover letter is an opportunity to stand out in a positive way from other applicants.

Find out what information to include in your letter, review a sample, and get advice on the best way to send it to prospective employers.

What to Include in a Finance Internship Cover Letter

Include the details.

Cover letters follow a very specific format. The first paragraph should mention the internship you hope to get. Many financial companies have large-scale internship programs, with opportunities ranging across departments and divisions.

Specifics help as well, so mention the name of your school if you are an undergrad or in graduate school.

If you have a personal connection—for instance, if you know someone at the company or met the recruiter at a job fair—be sure to mention it in the first paragraph.

Share Relevant Experience

In the body of your email, include details on relevant coursework or projects, as well as previous finance-related work experience, volunteer positions, or prior internships.

What to Include When You're Short on Experience

If this is your first internship, you may feel like you don't have any relevant experience to highlight. If that's the case, look for the qualities and responsibilities mentioned in the internship description, and come up with examples of how you've demonstrated those abilities in the past. Time spent volunteering and extracurricular activities can all be valuable here.

Read through the internship description carefully and make sure to connect your experience with the responsibilities and qualifications laid out.

Explain Why You're a Fit for the Role

Your letter should demonstrate your familiarity with the company and its goals, and make it clear why you would be a good candidate for the internship.

Tips for Writing Your Cover Letter

Your goal in this cover letter is to show that you're a strong candidate for the finance internship. That means writing persuasively, and also paying attention to the details. Keep these tips in mind as you craft your cover letter:

  • Pay attention to formatting:  Follow the appropriate cover letter format, from choosing the right font to making sure you include all the required elements.
  • Pay attention to the internship description:  The company's write-up of the internship offers valuable information. Take some time to read through it, and consider jotting down some notes about the company's priorities. Then, use these insights within your cover letter. For instance, if the company mentions looking for an Excel wizard, you can describe a project you've worked on or mention a class you've taken on using the program. A targeted cover letter will outperform a generic letter.
  • Proofread your letter carefully:  Even small errors, such as misspelling the company name, diminish the strength of your application, so take the time to  proofread  before hitting send.

Take a look at an example of a cover letter written for a finance internship program. Don't copy it exactly. Instead, use this text for inspiration when writing your own cover letter.

Your Name Address City, State Zip Code Phone Number Cell Phone Number Email

Name Title Company Address City, State Zip Code

Dear Mr./Ms. LastName:

Through ABC Financial Group's website, I learned about your bank's present career opportunities.

I am extremely interested in securing a position in the ABC Financial Group's Global Equity Summer Internship Program.

I am currently in my second year at the Smith Business School of the State University and am concentrating on finance, accounting, and real estate. Over the summer, I completed an internship with First National Bank. I am currently interning with the University's Student Federal Credit Union.

My experiences have provided me with a detailed knowledge of financial institutions and have enhanced my interest in pursuing a financial career. I feel that an internship with ABC Financial Group would be a logical next step in my development as an investment banker.

My main interest in joining ABC Financial Group stems from its impressive reputation. The prestige of the firm is best captured through its recent decoration as "America's Most Trusted Corporation" for the second consecutive year. I feel the firm's diverse clientele, large market capitalization, and well-established summer internship program would provide me with an invaluable experience to complement my studies at Business School.

I believe that I would succeed in the firm's exciting and motivated environment and that my strong work ethic, ability, and passion would make me a valuable asset to your firm.

I would prefer to work in global equity. However, I am willing to consider any position that you offer me. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to speaking with you in the near future.

Your Typed Name

If you are sending your cover letter via email, list your name and the job title in the subject line of the email message:

Aside from these relatively minor differences, an email cover letter is very similar to a printed-out version. The body of your email, from salutation to sign off, will remain the same.

Finance Internship Cover Letter Sample

A finance internship is usually your first step into the professional world. It gives you information about the world of employment and prepares you for an actual position later.

Most finance internships are unpaid, and companies are always on the lookout for people that they can hire to do tasks – and interns can benefit from this arrangement too. It is usually a win-win situation.

But there are many contenders for one internship position. Therefore, you have to justify that you deserve the internship.

A cover letter for a finance internship plays an important role. How you word your cover letter is what matters – little else does.

Since you are applying for your first job, your first impression makes a huge difference.

Here is a sample finance internship cover letter that you can take ideas:

What is an Internship Cover Letter?

How to write an internship cover letter, sending the letter, internship cover letter msword template, related readings, internship cover letter.

How to write and send one

When applying for an internship, most companies require students to write and send an internship cover letter as part of the application documents. Resumes from students don’t ordinarily show extensive work history. That makes an internship cover letter different from a typical cover letter because it’s usually a more important factor in persuading a company to hire you.

Internship Cover Letter

The cover letter should be customized to the specific internship and should attempt to show how your academic qualifications , skills, extracurricular activities, and any previous work experience make you a suitable candidate for the organization.

  • Internship cover letters are a key way to highlight skills for students who lack work experience.
  • A cover letter is your first opportunity to make a good impression with the employer.
  • Tailor your cover letter to the specific position you’re applying for.

Highlight your skills and qualifications in a way that captures the recruiter’s attention. Here are a few tips to follow when writing an internship cover letter:

1. Use the business letter format

An internship cover letter is a formal document and should follow a business letter format . Your contact information, the date, and the address of the employer should be at the top of the letter. The letter should also include a proper salutation before the introductory paragraph. At the end of the letter, you should sign your name. Use a plain font like Times New Roman or Arial. The font size for the letter should be 10 or 12.

2. State the role you are applying for

The internship cover letter should state the specific role you are applying for and what makes you a good candidate for the position. This is a better approach than writing a general cover letter for any position. Mentioning the specific role you are applying for naturally shapes the content of the rest of the letter.

3. Use keywords

Recruiters often do not initially read resumes/applications in their entirety. Instead, they scan through the document. Using specific keywords that were mentioned in the internship advertisement can help get your application more detailed attention. Review the job description to identify the main keywords that you should include in your cover letter.

4. Mention your academic experience

If the employer requires specific academic qualifications, you should mention your relevant qualifications and achievements in your cover letter. Since most students lack hands-on work experience, the next best things to note are completed courses and significant accomplishments. Highlight those that are most relevant to the job description. For example, if the job requires strong customer service skills, then you might want to highlight psychology courses on relationships that you’ve taken.

5. State relevant skills and extra-curricular experiences

You should mention extra-curricular experiences and skills that are relevant to the job description. These may include sports activities, leadership skills, and volunteer work that you have engaged in.

Volunteer experience in a related field can greatly boost your chances of getting an internship with a company. Even with limited industry experience, you can mention skills you gained from performing in volunteer roles and projects.

6. Proofread before sending

Once you have completed writing the internship cover letter, spend a few minutes reviewing the document for spelling, grammar, and syntax errors . Most employers are keen to notice how well-written (or poorly-written) a cover letter is. Keep in mind that your cover letter conveys the first impression that a recruiter forms of you. Any errors may spoil your chances of getting the job. You can also ask a friend or relative to review the final draft.

7. Follow up

Express near the end of the letter that you appreciate the employer’s consideration and hope to hear from them soon. You may also indicate that you will follow up in a week or two weeks’ time. If you follow up too soon, the employer may perceive you as over-eager (i.e., desperate). Following up lets you know the status of your application and at least confirm that your application was received.

Unless the employer has specifically stated that applications should be sent via post or submitted in person, you are likely to send the letter via email. Here are the two main ways you can use to send your cover letter via email:

1. As an email attachment

If the employer requires you to send a cover letter as an attachment, locate the document on your computer and attach it. It’s a good idea to include your name in the cover letter file name for easy identification.

2. Paste in the body of the email

The employer may ask you to send a cover letter as the body of the email. In such a case, don’t include the employer contact information and only include your contact information in the email signature. If you know the name of the recipient, include their name in the salutation .

Dear [Recipient’s Name]

I’m writing to apply for the marketing summer internship program at ABC company. I learned about the internship program through New York University’s Career Services Office.

I am currently a senior marketing student at New York University, and I will receive my degree in the spring. In the course of my studies, I have acquired skills in marketing analytics, product development, pricing, digital interment marketing, marketing communications, and public relations. Currently, I hold a 3.9 GPA.

Last summer, I created a social media marketing campaign for a non-profit that sells hand-made artifacts to support homeless families. The campaign returned the highest revenues ever for the non-profit and I was recognized as one of the best-performing volunteers. I also used my marketing analytics skills to analyze the results of the campaign and make recommendations to the marketing department.

I believe I would be a resourceful addition to your marketing team. The summer internship program can provide me with an opportunity to contribute towards the achievement of your organization’s goals and objectives, as well as enabling me to expand my skills.

I will call next week to see if my qualifications and skills are a fit for the candidate you are looking for. If so, I would like the opportunity to discuss my suitability for this position in person at a mutually convenient time. Thank you for your consideration. Should you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me at applicantname@email or (555) 555-5555.

Finance Intern Cover Letter Example (Full Text Version)

Julius Malema

Dear Mr. Rick Morty,

I am applying for the financial analyst position at the Charleston International Airport. I found out about CIA through my fiancé, who is a TA in the Financial Department. I believe I am a wonderful fit for the culture, work environment, and values espoused by Charleston International Airport. My skills in finance can help this organization improve functionally, thus, allowing for an even greater focus on improving the human condition and educating world-class leaders.

Currently I am earning my BBA in Financial Management at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, SC. My desire is to put my skills and knowledge to use in a professional environment. I am in the Honors program and I am set to graduate with a 3.96 cumulative GPA and will be the recipient of the CSU School of Business Outstanding Graduate in Finance award. While I have been taking classes, I have also been interning with finance department for the Charleston County Aviation Authority. Through my internship I have gained finance experience, including working in accounts payable and receivable, handling CRM Reports, balancing credit card charges, reconciling bank statements, and logging remittance reports. I am very proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access. I applied this knowledge in a business plan competition at CSU. My team placed earned first place; I primarily handled the financial statements for that project. While at CSU, I have also started an on-campus muffin delivery business (Sophomore year). I called it "Moufflet" and earned several hundred dollars of net income during the first two months of operation.

Just so you know a little bit more about me, I started my own podcast, which I call "Third Culture Journey." It is geared towards people who grew up overseas (like I did) or who are in a transition phase of life. I travel often during summers and have visited many countries, including: Ukraine, England, Israel, Spain, Canada, Armenia, Iceland, and Senegal. I have been to over twenty countries and hope to continue learning about (and seeing) the world.  I believe travel broadens my worldview and helps me understand people better. Most of the trips I was on were work-related. I helped build a well; I translated for various teams; I assisted in renovating buildings; and I also helped lead at many different camps. I try and lead whenever I can to get more experience. I was the student body president at my High School, as well as the yearbook editor. At CSU I have served as a student government senator and as Chairman for the Judiciary Committee, as well as the Master-at-Arms. I used my knowledge in finance to write a bill about restructuring the tax system. It was passed through the SC Student Legislature, and was then sent to actual SC Legislature. With my experience and knowledge, my hope is to work for an organization like Hylant, with ideals and goals congruent with my own.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter; I look forward to hearing back from you. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, and thank you so much for much for your consideration.
