Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. It is located on the bank of the Ottawa River in the east of Southern Ontario province. It has an estimated population of 885,000 people. Ottawa is the fourth largest city in the world. The name of this city comes from the Algonquin word Odawa which means “to trade”. Education in Canada is mostly free and publicly funded. It is overseen by the federal, provincial and local governments, with the education within provincial jurisdiction and the curriculum overseen by the province. Education is compulsory in most provinces up to the age of 16. Parents can choose between sending their children to one of the public schools or they can sent them to a fee paying private school. Those who live in Ottawa and find that picking a secondary school is a fraught decision involving school zones and ratings. There are four main public school boards in Ottawa. One is English, one is English-Catholic, and one is French and another is French-Catholic. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board which is the largest with 147 schools to oversee. The catholic school board has 85 schools, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est has 49 schools and the Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario has 37 schools. Canada’s higher has a very good reputation. However there is no formal ranking system and students will often choose colleges and universities bases on geographic convenience and the reputation of a particular course. Ottawa is one of the best educates cities in Canada as it is believed that over half of the population have graduated from college or university. Ottawa has the highest per capita concentration of engineers, scientists, and residents with PhDs in Canada. The University of Ottawa was founded in 1848 and was the first higher education institute to be established in the city.  The university is a bilingual public university. The University of Ottawa is ranked in the top 300 universities in the world, coming in at number 284 and is a top 15 university in Canada.  The university has faculties in the following areas: arts, civil law, common law, education, engineering, post graduate studies, health sciences, medicine, science, social sciences and the school of management. CREATIVE WRITING

A student sits on a stool, reading from a book into a microphone

Unlike any other creative writing program in Ontario, it enables students to hone their craft while exploring multiple art and design practices.

Collaborative by nature, our transdisciplinary and transcultural approach enriches imaginations, broadens perspectives and helps to develop each individual writer’s voice.

Our program includes the study of living literary culture and literary art practices and production, and emphasizes the practice, craft and production of spoken, written, visual and verbal texts as well as experimental language forms that exist both inside and outside established genres. We welcome ‘attitude’ translated on the page and off, through performance texts and other media.

This program combines written, performance and visual expression. You’ll participate in:

  • An online and print journal
  • Symposia, workshops
  • Showcasing and public performances
  • A book, zine and publications fair
  • Field trips to local readings, conferences and festivals
  • A digital and analog writing lab and access to sound studio
  • A reading series featuring established, emerging and student writers
  • Mentorships, as both mentees and later as mentors
  • University slam team
  • A nurturing and supportive emerging literary community
  • Mentorship by faculty

This program is for both new and emerging writers. You’ll become part of a nurturing and supportive literary community. By the end of your degree, you’ll complete a body of work aimed at publication or exhibition to launch your career.

Goodbye and Good luck! Thank you for ten years!

The Ottawa Writer’s Circle was founded  by Averill Elisa Frankes  in September 2013 to make the solitary act of writing a little less lonely and steadily grew into one of the largest and most active writing communities in the City of Ottawa. For nearly ten years, Averill and the OWC volunteer team organized and facilitated social mixers, discussion groups, critique circles, Shop Talks, workshops, presentations from industry professionals, and so much more for its members and the writing community at large. It was an enormous pleasure to lead such a diverse and enthusiastic community through our individual writing journeys. I will always be grateful for the lessons and tools I’ve gained from this experience and from the entire membership!  I wish each and every one of you so much luck in your next chapters as I close the book on one of the most rewarding experiences of my life (so far!).

What are the benefits of creative writing courses for kids?

Kids both gain and learn a lot in creative writing courses we list above. Here’s what we’ve learned from the program providers who list with Camps.ca.:

Classes teach the fundamentals of storytelling.  Kids and teens learn all about the elements of narrative. They’ll learn how to create a tone for their story and how to describe settings. They learn how to create characters with unique traits and distinct voices. Dialogue will be another part of what kids learn in a creative writing class.

Classes teach about the writing and creative process .Classes will also teach fundamentals of pot development, how to artfully create relatable conflicts in their stories. They’ll learn how to move the narrative toward a crisis or climax, building the story carefully. They’ll learn about conceiving an entire story, story planning, and then editing, in order to achieve a good flow.

Classes teach good writing . As part of the writing process, kids will improve their diction and descriptive abilities. They’ll practise when to apply descriptive language and when to keep the story moving forward.

Classes give kids portfolio material. Classes work toward an end goal such as the creation of a printed book of student’s work. They get to see their production in hard copy. Kids and teens who aspire to a professional writing career will have material to show others.

Kids will grow both personally and socially.

Note that each class above will have different emphases, so check listings closely to find out how course curricula matches with your expectations.

Benefits of a writing class

Beyond the practical curriculum of the class, there are many other benefits students gain. Here’s a look.:

Social growth . The program setting naturalizes interaction with other kids. Students share a love of creative writing. They critique each other's work constructively under the guidance of a teacher. Kids learn to test their resilience and grow in creativity, as well as other characteristics.

Develop writing skills beyond creative writing . Classes will help kids improve punctuation and grammar skills, usage, diction, etc., as students all learn together. They develop skills that will make them better academic writers and learners.

Increased self confidence . In the freeform setting of a class, kids feel more license to express themselves—not only through their writing but in orally presenting things they’ve written. These classes tend to make learning fun, and kids feel more open. They discover things about both themselves and others that they wouldn’t elsewhere.

How to find the right class for your child

When reviewing options above, make sure to question teachers and class providers, to ensure that you know what you’re going to gain from the course.

Ask about instructors’ credentials . How much experience do they have writing and what have they written? How much experience in teaching? How much experience do they have with children in the targeted age group.

Ask about homework . Are there assignments out of class? What are takeaways from class?

Ask about prerequisites . What level do children need to be at for this course?
