'Gatham' review: Outstanding suspense cinema that checks all boxes

Gatham starts off with a display card that reads, “Every human being has a bit of a psychopath in him. But only a few bring it out and you’re safe as long as you maintain distance from them. Unless they knock on your door.” You wonder if the quote holds true from a psychological perspective. After all, the display of such cards hasn’t worked so well in the recent past.

It is with this skepticism that I started watching Gatham. But every other moment thereon, writer-director Kiran shattered my doubts and reminded me that we should never forget to expect the unexpected from art. Rishi (Rakesh Galebhe) wakes up in a hospital and is immediately informed by the doctor that he has met with an accident which wiped away his memories.

The doctor introduces Adithi (Poojitha Kuraparthi) as Rishi’s girlfriend. Days later, Adithi drives Rishi to meet his father, but the car breaks down in the middle of a snowy forest. Arjun (Bhargava Poludasu) offers his help and asks the couple to rest in his shelter.

Hell breaks loose when Arjun’s son, Harsha, enters the cabin and troubles the couple.

Though the starting is very familiar, when the screenplay starts feeding us information little-by-little - one ‘nightmare’ after another – suspense builds up organically. When the twist in the tale eventually unfolds, halfway through the movie, it makes us freeze, even though we were fed details of it right from the beginning – a prime suspense moment.

The premise, the conflict, as well the snowy topography in which this psycho-revenge thriller is set, might make you wonder if this is a Mumbai Police meets Wind River kind of a tale. But in retrospect, those resemblances remain just similarities and Gatham proves itself to be unique work in its own right. When the non-linear narrative comes full circle and leaves us with only the third act to be dealt with, we understand the tricky positions that the characters find themselves in, and it gets even more exciting. It is here that we realise why Kiran chose to display that quote about psychopaths in the beginning.

Gatham has noteworthy performances from all the lead actors. However, debutant Bhargava Poludasu’s performance easily steals the limelight. Initially, when he plays a villain who will shoot at you point-blank and immediately tell you where the first-aid kit is, he leaves you bewildered, yet spellbound. When his motives are finally revealed, it comes out in a brilliant way.

Bhargava has brought out the extreme duality in his character quite distinctively, and yet it never looks like two different characters – credits also to the well-written character arc. At a time when we’re used to seeing semi-flat characters written with an assumption that the high-adrenaline story will make up for it, watching a character like Arjun is particularly exciting.

Be it a diary that a father uses to document his son’s sins, or a deer mounted on the wall, the way debutant Kiran has woven those details into the story is impressive and commendable. Yet, while the writing is undoubtedly good, it isn’t flawless. At one point, Bhargava’s character randomly starts narrating the story, in a film that had no narrator until then, and you’re left wondering when he became the narrator and who he is recounting for.

Manojh Reddy’s cinematography merits a special mention. There’s a short car chase sequence in the end and the way it is shot is as good as any car chase I’ve ever seen. Manojh judiciously uses his drones, and the stunning lighting is refreshing, and in tandem with the colouring, really elevates the mood.

Though there are some visible errors with the patchwork and continuity in a few scenes, the cinematography and overall editing more than make up for this. Full credit to editor GS for making the sequences so crisp that we hardly see anything out of place in the mise en scene. All credits go to the producers of Gatham for taking on a script like this and giving us a neat psychological suspense-thriller.

‘Gatham’ movie review: A deceptively engaging thriller

This indie psychological thriller scores on its storytelling.

  • Cast: Bhargava Poludasu, Rakesh Galebhe, Poojitha Kuraparthi
  • Direction: Kiran Reddy
  • Music: Sricharan Pakala
  • Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video

Gatham opens with an aerial view of a snow-covered terrain in which two people scurry for their lives, only to succumb. Within minutes there are other snapshots of crime, following which one of the primary characters, Rishi (Rakesh Galebhe, whose voice and diction is similar to Vijay Deverakonda) wakes up in a hospital and is told that he has suffered brain damage and memory loss.

Rishi cannot remember the woman who is supposedly his girlfriend (Poojitha); they remain cordial but emotionally distant to each other, given the circumstances they are in.

Gatham begins to plod along familiar tropes of a psychological crime thriller. After a car breakdown, when the couple find themselves cornered in a secluded house with a father and son who display psychopath traits, it looks like yet another cold and lifeless thriller of trapped people desperately trying to escape. Only Sricharan Pakala’s background score managed to pique some interest.

I nearly gave up on the film after the first 30 minutes, when the father (Bhargava Poludasu) says an utterly cringe-inducing line. But the curiosity of wanting to see where the plot was headed got the better of me. And Gatham slowly pulls the rug from under the viewers’ feet to reveal its true colours.

You know that something is amiss in the way new characters pop-up and the conversations are staged, punctuated with memory flashes of women being in trouble. With no memory of the past, Rishi is as much in the dark as anyone viewing the film.

Gatham then turns the tables and makes us look at the character afresh, which isn’t entirely unexpected. But there’s an earnestness in its storytelling. Even when the later portions basically work as a recap to put things in perspective, it sustains interest because this indie-spirited film is sure about its narrative style.

There are misgivings, like the investigation by the cops never adding up to anything concrete in the plot or every other person turning out to be Telugu-speaking in the US.

Yet, Gatham plays out like a short story neatly being woven into place to pin down the culprit. To discuss anything more about the storyline would mean revealing spoilers.

Barring Bhargava Poludasu who is impressive, the acting all around is just about adequate and there are no frills in production, given the shoestring budget. Gatham has a runtime of an hour and 44 minutes, and comes from a team that knows to narrate a story. At the end of the day, that matters a great deal.

Gatham movie review.

gatham movie review in tamil

'Gatham', directed by indie filmmaker Kiran Reddy based in the US, is premiering on Amazon Prime Video. Made over two years, the film is a psychological thriller. The sub-genre is quite popular in Hollywood. The writer-director has made a true-blue genre film. Is the film worth a watch? Find out!

The film is set in Sierra Nevada, among other locations, in America. As the film opens, we are introduced to a clueless younger named Rishi (Rakesh Galebhe), whose memory of the past has been erased by a head injury. He heads to a distant place with his girlfriend Adithi (Poojitha Kurapathi) to meet his father to know more about his past.

On their way, when their car breaks down, they seek the help of a stranger named Arjun (Bhargava Poludasu), whose son Harsha (Harsha Prathap) is a complete jerk. The Rishi-Adithi duo spends the night at Arjun-Harsha's place fearing for their lives. By the next day, Rishi comes to know that there is more to it than meets the eye. What is the reality? Can he remember his past? Who is the villain? Who is the victim? Answers to these questions are found in the nearly an hour-long second half.

Performances

As performances go, it is Bhargava Poludasu who is better compared to Rakesh Galebhe. Harsha Prathap is understated. Poojitha Kurapathi is not only good-looking but also shows potential to carry off roles in mainstream commercial entertainers. Lakshmi Bharadwaj is seen in a short role. Thirumudi Thulasiraman is superb, while Raghu Gopal makes the cut.

Technical aspects

Made on a shoestring budget, the film uses its limited resources optimally. Manojh Reddy's cinematography leaves no stone unturned to give the best. Sricharan Pakala marshalls his immense talent and proves that he is the go-to guy for thrillers. 'Kshanam', 'Goodachari' and 'Evaru' are part of his filmography and he adds 'Gatham' to his impressive list.

Plus Points

The film rises above its limitations to tell a fairly engaging second half. The trauma of a father is brought out in a touching way. This adds dramatic heft to the proceedings.

The psychological drama aspect is interesting to sustain the audience's interest till the climax.

At 101 minutes, the film rightly avoids even montage songs.

The element of crimes against women has been shown without resorting to usual cliches.

The scenes involving the villain and his father carry a fear of dread.

Minus Points

Is there a reason why Rishi doesn't try his best, like any adult would and should, to get out of Arjun's dangerous place? If yes, it was not made clear. If no, it's laughable.

It's hardly unconvincing that a key character's mind starts working with astonishing clarity and quickness when he has to investigate something. Revealing more would give away a spoiler.

There was enough scope for the villain's character to be shown as making an effort to save his skin. Somehow, his character becomes docile.

Closing Remarks

For all its demerits, 'Gatham' is an important indie film that has the potential to be a career-altering movie for director Kiran Reddy and a few others associated with the movie. This year has seen unremarkable thrillers like 'Nishabdham', 'Penguin' and 'V'. 'Gatham' is a whiff of fresh air both relatively and otherwise.

Gatham Movie Review: Outstanding suspense cinema that checks all boxes

Rating: ( 4 / 5).
