Chaeyoung Park (박채영) or Roseanne Park (her English name) was born in Auckland, New Zealand on February 11, 1997. She debuted with her stage name ROSÉ as a member of South Korean girl group BLACKPINK with the company YG Entertainment in 2016.

At the young age of 7, Rosé moved to Australia with her family, and was raised in Melbourne. In 2012, she placed first against 700 contestants in YG Entertainment auditions in Australia with the song “I Won’t Give Up'' by Jason Mraz . As a result, she started her idol training on May 7, 2012, after moving alone to Seoul, South Korea.

After 5 months of training, Rosé had her first feature release in her labelmate G-Dragon’s 2013 song “Without You.” Originally, she had been credited as “? Of YG New Girl Group,” staying anonymous for years until it was confirmed to be her after debuting with BLACKPINK .

On January 24, 2021, BLACKPINK’s YouTube channel released a video titled ‘ROSÉ – COMING SOON TEASER’ , which previewed Rosé’s original B-side track “Gone.” She performed the song for the first time in BLACKPINK’s virtual concert THE SHOW on January 31, 2021.

On March 12, 2021, Rosé’s debut single album R released, containing the title track “On The Ground” , the previously heard song “Gone” , and their respective instrumentals. R became the best-selling solo album by a female artist on the platform with 500k total pre-orders. The music video for “On The Ground” reached over 46.1 million views within 24 hours in YouTube, making her the first one to pass PSY’s “Gentleman” 8-year record of most views by a Korean soloist in a day. ROSÉ is the first to top Billboard’s global charts as both a soloist and as a group . “On The Ground” debuted at No. 1 on both the Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts .

Rosé on the Power of Vulnerability and Why Blackpink Is Family

By Haeryun Kang

Haeryun Kang

R osé has juggled different personas her whole life. Born to Korean parents in New Zealand, Roseanne Chaeyoung Park grew up mostly in Australia, comparing her childhood there to Hannah Montana’s double life: She was the Korean Chaeyoung at church on Sundays, attending services with the other immigrants. During the week, she was the Aussie kid Roseanne at school. Behind the Blackpink persona, she says, “I actually don’t do too much. I live a really quiet life. My mom comes over to my house … that’s about it.”

Now, she’s trying to reconcile the more down-to-earth woman fewer people know with her public self —  the guitar-playing, high-note-hitting singer with the “golden voice,” as fans love to point out, the star whose 2021 single “ On the Ground ” (the lead track from her solo release, R ) topped both Billboard ‘s Global 200 and Global 200 Excl. U.S. charts, making her the first K-pop soloist to do so. “I’m trying to bring those two worlds together in the middle,” she says, munching fried rice at the pho restaurant inside the headquarters of YG Entertainment. “That fierce [Rosé] persona — it’s fun when that happens, when I can turn on this whole different character.”

(In celebration of  Blackpink’s appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone , we’re publishing  individual digital covers  with each member of the group; check back throughout this week for more.)

What was the pandemic like for you, back when everything stopped? Oh, it was terrible. I’ve never rested like that in my life, and it was the worst. I was sick at one point — you know, things your body goes through when stress hits you? I got the shingles. It came with me not knowing what to do in a life without work. I was a workaholic, obviously. I couldn’t stand the fact that suddenly all of our schedules were empty for the next two to three months. I started to think, “What if people aren’t interested in me, or us, by the end of this pandemic? What am I going to do for the rest of my life?” I don’t know why I thought like that. Now that I think about it, I’m so dramatic. Why am I so dramatic?

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024.

How did you use that empty time? I used that time to get to know myself better. “How do I cope with myself? How do I deal with myself in a room that’s quiet?” I think a lot of people could really relate. I was extremely extroverted back then. It was time for me to tune into my inner self, act like an introvert. I kind of created this introverted persona — I remember being in a big room with a bunch of people, and I wanted to go home for the first time. “Wow, is this what introverts feel?”

Was music something you gravitated toward as a child, without thinking? I think so. We had this really old piano that was handed to us from our auntie — she had it for 10 years or something. It was faded brown, very dull and boring, but it worked. It was always sitting in the living room. We had lessons growing up — I hated them. I used to cry because I didn’t want to practice. The teacher was really scary.

Oh, God, even in Australia, Korean parents forced piano lessons on their kids? Of course, of course! I lived a very normal Korean life. I remember, one day I told my mom, “I don’t want to take lessons anymore.” She agreed. I was so surprised. I learned how to play basic chords. So that was enough to be an instrument to my singing. The internet back then was so slow. In the morning we’d wake up, and if we wanted to watch a movie, we’d click “download” and we’d have to wait, like, two days. But the piano: We don’t have to charge it. We could play it on the spot.

My parents were always out at work — surprisingly, I didn’t really hang out with friends too much back then. My friends all lived quite far from me. My sister would be studying. I’d have nothing to do. I’d watch TV for three hours, and by the end I’d be bored, so I’d start playing the piano, until my parents literally said, “We need to sleep now! Can you be quiet?”

Tell me about a moment when your parents said, “Rosé! Stop singing and go to bed!” Actually, I remember them being, “Oh, Rosé, why don’t we sleep now?” But later, my sister told me, they used to meet upstairs in my parents’ room and discuss whose turn it [was] to go down to tell [me] to stop. They would roll their eyes: “Oh, God, she doesn’t know how to stop.” I didn’t know about that! They didn’t tell me. I mean, it’s so nice if you think about it. Thank you for not crushing my dreams of becoming a superstar, ha-ha-ha.

What do you remember from your childhood home? It was a normal, two-story house. We had a backyard, a dog. There were a lot of elderly people living around us; it wasn’t a youthful area. It was very quiet, very friendly. We were this quiet Asian family. There were a lot of lizards. We’d wake up and put our shoes outside; there would be tiny little lizards inside our shoes. Tiny lizards, big cockroaches — I’m terrified of them still.

Let’s talk about music. You’re serious about your craft. There’s all this noise, photo shoots, interviews, the spectacle — but music is what matters. As corny as it sounds, it’s correct, definitely. It starts with my love for music; that’s what makes me happy. It’s like a sense of — what do you call it? — healing. It’s something that calms me down during the day, it stops me from thinking. But with that, I get to do all these amazing things. Photo shoots! Being in front of the television [cameras]! It’s really fun, and I’m so grateful to be able to do these things. But then, I forget about music. I forget to sit down and pick up my guitar and sing.

During my time off, I started to realize I just love to sit and sing. Recently I started picking up the guitar again. I hadn’t been doing that for the past two or three months — caught up in life. But I had a few days when I didn’t have anything. I didn’t plan anything. I just decided to stay home and see what happens.

You and that empty room. Yeah, basically! I even told my mom I want to be by myself for the next few days. So she didn’t come over. I started picking out my guitar. I sang a few songs I enjoyed. I wondered, “What would it be like if I sang that? How would I sing that?” And I started singing. I was enjoying it. I turned on my iPad — I did this back in Australia, too. iPads had just started coming out, and my dad got me an iPad, and I remember doing the same thing — and I recorded myself. It was fun. As corny as it sounds, I do love music.

You have high standards, and sometimes you’re harsh on yourself. Is this drive to be better sometimes a heavy burden? For sure. Sometimes I look at somebody who’s very confident, and I admire that. I wish I was that way too. I am very insecure about it, but only because I care about it so much. I have so much respect for it. Yeah, it does burden me sometimes, but I try really hard to overcome it. Confidence is something I’m working on every single day.

Insecurity isn’t a negative thing — it’s one of the most powerful drivers of good art. Tell me about how you make yourself vulnerable to music. I think I am just vulnerable! I’m beginning to realize how sad it is to live life without tension. In the past, if I felt nervous, it’d burden me so much, because you just want to be relaxed, right? But to be nervous about something, to really care about something, is what makes life so interesting and fun.

What made you think about all this? Why am I crying? Oh, my God, so weird. I’m so sorry. I hate myself for this, this is so funny. This is so weird. Oh, my God. What made me think that? It’s been, how many years since we started Blackpink, six years? So it’s about time to start feeling comfortable in certain settings. I think a good amount of feeling comfortable and a good amount of feeling vulnerable is always good. I also really enjoy that feeling of vulnerability and really wanting or craving something — I really enjoy that feeling. So I don’t want to lose that, ever.

Trump goes full fascist in truth social posting spree, ‘it ends with us’ crew members say justin baldoni and blake lively’s creative differences were not a secret on set, francis ford coppola: 'i have nothing left to lose', trump threatens to jail mark zuckerberg for life.

Are there any artists you’re jealous of these days? Recently I went to a Dua Lipa concert. She was singing live. Wow, this is — I was like, her voice is — her voice, just, it was amazing. She was so good. I was blown away. I took a lot of notes. I was fangirling for sure.

You released your first solo singles last year, “On the Ground” and “Gone,” to great success. What was it like standing alone, without your bandmates? It was very challenging — that put me more in a vulnerable position. The four of us are like one. We’re there for each other, and if one person can’t be in their best condition that day, then we are there to fill in for that other person. Standing alone was frightening. It made me realize how much Blackpink was a big support to me in the past. When I didn’t know what to do, I’d call to ask them what they felt, what their opinions were. So they were always there during my solo work.

Tell me about the lyric “Everything I need is on the ground.” This line was initially written by the producers of the song. That’s what caught me and my producer the most. We were drawn to this song because of this phrase.

What is “on the ground” for you? Just us as people. A year and a half ago, maybe two, I remember us eating. It was the four of us and Teddy. We were just hungry people — we got to the restaurant, very hungry, and the food was really good. This is what makes us feel like people. Just us, eating with the people we love. It feels like family, that’s what makes us happy. At the end of the day, you gotta sit down and remember that everything we need is — the most normal things we do, hanging out with the people we love, doing things we love.

Music can be big, and that’s very exciting; we love that because it creates a movement and we can gather people together; we can enjoy and celebrate life together. But then, “How did we get here? Rosé, what does music mean to you?” Everything I need is on the ground. It’s where I started.

Have you ever imagined life after Blackpink? After this is over? I think about it. But I don’t think it will be over. Blackpink is family forever. I grew up with them. They’re a part of me. I don’t think it’ll ever end. It’s dumb of me to ever worry about that or think about it. But you know, when something is so good and you love it so much, you always think of that side, because you don’t want to lose it.

7 Things To Know About Blackpink’s Rosé

by Alyanna Raissa J. Payos

She was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia

The Vogue Hong Kong December cover star was actually born in New Zealand, moving to the land down under at the age of eight. She spent the rest of her childhood  in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, before moving to South Korea to pursue her dreams.

She featured in G-Dragon’s Without You before she even debuted

Before she was Rosé of Blackpink, she was simply “? “.  Within her first year as a YG trainee, the singer had already lent her voice to one of the biggest names in K-pop. In 2012, BIGBANG’s G-Dragon released a solo album featuring a mystery singer in one of the songs: Without You ft ? YG of New Girl Group . At the time her identity remained unknown, but during a live countdown showcasing the new album to his viewers, G-Dragon encouraged listeners to watch out for the girl group’s debut, praising the unique vocals Rosé’s fans have grown to know and love.

Her Korean name is Park Chae-young

Born Roseanne Park, you’ll often hear Rosé refer to herself as Rosie for short. But the star’s Korean name is Chae-young, which fans have shortened to the nickname “chaeng”.

She is a such huge foodie, fans have nicknamed her Foodsé

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by ROSÉ (@roses_are_rosie)

Rosé’s fans have taken advantage of the singer’s iconic stage name, often taking the creative liberty to coin it with other words to create new nicknames for her (e.g. Pinksé or Redsé for her past hair colours ). One such nickname is Foodsé, in honour of Rosé’s enduring love for food, which fans take care to document with countless compilation videos of her eating. In a Q&A with Vogue Australia, the K-pop star pins delicious food as the reason behind much of her tears.

She was the first female K-pop idol to attend the Met Gala

When Rosé stepped foot on the Met Gala red carpet last year , history was made. Arriving in a slinky LBD from Saint Laurent (the luxury brand of which she is a global ambassador for), she became the first female K-pop idol to attend the prestigious Met Gala event, alongside rapper and former labelmate, CL.

Her dad pushed her to audition for YG Entertainment

Everyone, say thank you to Mr Park. The Blackpink singer has mentioned numerous times that it was her father who suggested she audition to be a singer. Rosé’s dad had learned through the news that YG was bringing their search for talent to Australia. He convinced her to try, citing a wish for her to create good memories and live with no regrets. And so, at the age of 16, Rosé hauled her acoustic guitar to Sydney, sang Jason Mraz’s I Won’t Give Up , and became one of four Australian YG finalists.

She is dog mom to Hank

On 2 December 2020, Rosé officially brought home her very own pup. Hank, who now has 3.4million of his own followers on Instagram , is an adorably scruffy mixed-breed mutt whom the K-pop superstar adopted from a local shelter. He was rescued with a severe skin disease and was hospitalised for 3 months, before finding a loving home with Blackpink’s Rosé. The message is clear: adopt, don’t shop!

Next, Rosé talked about what kind of artist she wants to become. She shared, “When I listen to a song, I try to recognize the feelings and stories that the artist wants to convey. As such, I hope that what I want to convey through my songs will be delivered well. That’s the kind of singer I want to be.”

When asked what it means to be successful as both a member of BLACKPINK and a solo artist, she said, “If I am satisfied with the result, I think that is success in itself. That’s why I can enjoy the next step without feeling burdened by the word ‘success’.”

Rose from Blackpink – New Zealand-born K-pop singer with the unique voice and difficult dance moves

Auckland-born Rose left high school in Australia to train at YG Entertainment aged 15, and showed she could hit the high notes easily while performing tough dance routines

A member of one of the most popular female K-pop girl groups, Rose is gaining popularity in her own right for the sweet timbre of her voice.

Since the band’s debut two years ago, Blackpink (Rose, Jisoo, Jennie and Lisa) have become firmly established as one of K-pop’s most popular groups. Their music can be heard in shops and malls across South Korea, yet not much is known about the foursome. Unlike other K-pop idols, you’d be hard pushed to see them in commercials or posters advertising soju.

Blackpink have the largest number of Instagram followers among K-pop female idols – at more than 12 million – yet they seldom appear on variety shows or take part in interviews. This aura of mystery seems only to have boosted the band’s popularity.

The first girl group to be promoted by YG Entertainment since 2NE1, there had already been rumours that a big new female supergroup was being planned for several years before their official debut in August 2016.

black pink rose biography

The sleek teaser posters unveiled ahead of their debut revealed that audiences were in for a surprise. Unlike other run-of-the-mill K-pop female idols, with their cute or sexy looks, the Blackpink girls seemed to be on an altogether different level: their look more sophisticated and feisty, with a sexy touch. It was obvious that they were not catering to the garden variety male-oriented fan base.

Blackpink’s members have also become fashion icons: they are regulars in the front rows of fashion shows at home and overseas. Rose recently appeared on the cover of the British magazine Dazed and Confused ’s 2018 autumn edition along with Lisa.

Despite a huge demand for them to appear in commercials, YG Entertainment has resisted overexposing Blackpink, preferring them to focus on their music and performing. Blackpink are known for their eye-catching choreography: their dance practice YouTube videos have the highest numbers of views among all K-pop artists.

Rose, 21, was born Roseanne Park Chae-young in Auckland, New Zealand in 1997 and has an older sister. She was educated in Australia until she left high school to train at YG Entertainment at the age of 15, after being selected at a YG Australia audition. She was a cheerleader at high school, which may explain her proficiency in complex dance moves.

Role in Blackpink

Rose is the group’s lead dancer and is also known for her unique, dreamy voice. She has an ability to hit high notes easily while performing extreme dance moves on the stage – something even veteran K-pop artists cannot always manage.

As a native English speaker, Rose’s diction when singing pop songs is excellent compared to other K-pop artists.

black pink rose biography

As the members of Blackpink seldom appear on variety shows or do interviews, they come across as mostly mysterious. When Blackpink have appeared on variety shows, Lisa has done most of the talking and Rose seems to be the quiet one.

Rose is also well known for her slim and lithe figure, despite admitting to being a voracious eater when she is away from the limelight. Unlike the other band members, Rose has said she is quiet and shy in private.

Thanks to her unique voice, Rose has appeared on several music programmes, including King of Masked Singer , as a solo artist, where she has been well received. She also recorded Without You with male idol G-Dragon.

In her own words

“I love cooking, eating and watching TV with Jisoo, Jennie and Lisa,” she said in an interview published in YG Life .

After performing on King of Masked Singer in 2017, she said: “I didn’t know if the audience would like my singing. I’m so happy and relieved that they did.”

“I feel 100 per cent Korean and also I sometimes feel like a foreigner,” she said during an appearance on JTBC TV’s Give Me a Meal .

BLACKPINK's Jennie, Rosé, Jisoo, and Lisa: What to Know

Their new Light Up the Sky documentary reveals all.

blackpink

Big news, BLINKs: BLACKPINK's " Light Up the Sky" documentary  is officially out—you can watch it on  Netflix here — and there's plenty to dissect. The 79-minute film gives fans intimate access into the lives of the four members, Jennie, Rosé, Jisoo, and Lisa, and provides the full journey of how each girl became a K-pop star.

"We shot [the documentary] in the fall of last year and February of this year," says Caroline Suh, director of  Light Up the Sky . "The fans love them so much, so I want them to see the members in a more casual, direct way. I hope [ Light Up the Sky ] humanizes them and shows each of them as a three-dimensional person beyond just their image."

The documentary features a ton of backstory, from BLACKPINK members' baby photos (they were all as adorable as you'd expect) to their audition tapes for YG Entertainment. BLINKs will see Rosé shed some tears as she talks about leaving home to become a trainee at 16 years old, plus you'll get a glimpse into the true personality of the elusive Jennie. By the end of the documentary, you'll see why the four ladies are powerhouse performers and why they simply belong together as a group. Ahead, the backstory, plus some other need-to-know tidbits, of each BLACKPINK member.

Known as the unnie (big sister) of the group, 25-year-old Jisoo was born in Sanbon, Gunpo city in the Gyeonggi-do province in South Korea. She lived with her parents, sister, brother, and grandparents.

"I'm living a very different life than the one I thought I'd be living," Jisoo says in  Light Up the Sky . "I used to want to be a writer or a painter, although I couldn't paint very well. I joined the drama club when I was in 11th grade. They were saying I should try auditioning because I needed the experience. My first audition was at YG [Entertainment]. I didn't know much at all about YG before I arrived there the first day. It felt like something far removed from me. I never thought I’d actually be doing it for real."

'Jisoo as a child.'

Jisoo passed the audition and trained for five years alongside the other BLACKPINK members, taking three to four dance lessons a day in addition to vocal lessons from two to three teachers. She is now the lead vocalist of the group and co-wrote  Lovesick Girls  from the group's first-ever album,  The Album . "She does have that professional poker face," says producer and songwriter Teddy Park. "I've know Jisoo for, let's say, a good six years. I've seen her cry, once. She's super smart. A lot of people might think she's book smart, but I would say she's street smart."

In addition to her work as a BLACKPINK member, Jisoo has acting creds under her belt. She has made cameo appearances in shows such as  The Producers   and  Arthdal Chronicles   and will play the lead in the upcoming Korean drama  Snowdrop . The singer is also a certified fashionista, landing campaigns with the likes of Dior and Cartier. In fact, Jisoo was Dior's muse and modeled for the fall/winter 2020 collection. Fun facts: Jisoo is trilingual and speaks Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and has a white Maltese dog named Dalgom.

jennie kim attends gentle monster x nudake event in beijing

The 24-year-old star was born in Korea and raised in Seoul until she was ten; she then moved to Australia and New Zealand with her mom. In the documentary, Jennie recalls her mom asking her if she'd like to live in New Zealand.

"From 10 to 15, I was in New Zealand by myself. I never really got to spend so much time in the house with my mom until recently," Jennie says. "When I turned 15, I was deciding whether I should move to America. I went there, I checked the school out. Everything was kind of decided, like 80 percent, and I came back to New Zealand to pack my stuff up. That's when I realized I don't want to go to America and do another study there by myself. I actually want to become a singer. I don't know where it came from."

Jennie had an audition with YG when she was only 14 years old and got in, then spent six years training. Now as one of the main rappers of BLACKPINK, Jennie is arguably one of the most popular members and was the first in the group to release her own song in 2018, appropriately titled  SOLO  with over 540 million views on YouTube. (It also became the most viewed music video by a female Korean solo artist of all time within its first 24 hours of release.)

Though she is often portrayed as fierce and confident on stage, her behind-the-scenes personality is the opposite. Those close to her, from producer Park to Jennie's pilates instructor, Jessie Yeo, have described her as shy. "I am super shy," Jennie says in  Light Up the Sky . "I was one of those people where I can't even order something on the phone. Like, I hated that. Took me a while to get this far."

In the documentary, Yeo says, "At first it was hard getting to know her, but once we became close, I could tell that she's very loyal, very sweet, and a lovely friend. I see her every day, so I'm used to her and she’s like my little sister. But when I see her on TV, I'm like 'Ah, Jennie is a star," but she's really down to earth." Meanwhile Park echoed these sentiments, saying, "Jennie is super clear. Her opinions, her emotions. She's a perfectionist."

Outside of the music industry, Jennie is a muse for both fashion and beauty labels such as Chanel (she often wears the label in BLACKPINK's music videos, while Jisoo wears Dior) and Amore Pacific. Earlier this year, she collaborated with  Gentle Monster  on a sunglasses collection. As for pets, Jennie has two dogs: Kai and Kuma, who often make appearances in the  BLACKPINK Diaries .

Rosé, whose given name is Park Chaeyoung or Roseanne Park, was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia when she was eight years old. In  Light Up the Sky , Rosé, pronounced as  roh-say , reveals that it was her dad who recognized her love for music and urged her to pursue a path in it.

"He's like yeah...You're gonna have to, you know, try do something about it, otherwise you're going to be 25 and you're gonna regret that you didn't try anything," Rosé says in  Light Up the Sky . "I was 16. I went, auditioned, and then they called me and they were like 'can you fly to Korea within two months?' And then my whole life changed. In Australia, I dropped out of school. I had never even imagined myself living apart from my family. I hadn't even slept more than two weeks out of home."

rosé when she was a child

When Rosé arrived to the YG dorms where she would begin training (she trained for four years), she recalls being placed in the same room as Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa. Lisa saw that Rosé had brought her guitar from Australia and asked her to play something. "It was us four. I don't even know why, but it was us four. We covered songs 'til morning. All of us, we were singing. Somebody was harmonizing. I think Jisoo was harmonizing. It was so funny. Can you believe it?" says Rosé.

The 23-year-old artist is the main vocalist of BLACKPINK, which aligns with Rosé's strengths; she actively makes time in her busy schedule to practice writing and singing her own songs while playing guitar and piano.

"I have a really hard time falling asleep. I have a lot of thoughts running through my head. Singing is kind of like stress relief and everything just kind of makes sense when I'm doing this," says Rosé. "Sometimes, I actually have missed my trainee days. Because, back then, we were surrounded by music all the time. But these days we've got a lot of work, so I actually have to make time for this. That's why it's always at night, when I'm supposed to be sleeping."

Like the other BLACKPINK members, Rosé has landed many endorsement deals, like starring as the global face for Saint Laurent's fall/winter 2020 campaign. She and Jisoo were also selected to rep the  South Korean cosmetics brand Kiss Me . Rosé's latest project, however, will be the most exciting to BLINKs, especially those who love her voice, as she is scheduled to release her own songs following BLACKPINK's  The Album.

Lisa, the most followed BLACKPINK member on Instagram, is known as the upbeat and spunky one in the group. Lisa, who alternates between speaking Thai and Korean in  Light Up the Sky , was born Pranpriya Manoban in the Buriram Province of Thailand before moving to Bangkok when she was three. In the documentary, the 23-year-old star recalls that she was always dancing and singing as a child, so her mom signed her up for lessons in kindergarten. The gifted dancer then started participating in competitions at a young age, leading her to eventually audition for YG in 2010. Out of 4,000 applicants there, she was the only person to make it.

"After the audition ended, I waited for the call. I was waiting and waiting. I waited for two months! And then they called me," Lisa says. "I was a mama's girl. So when I had to go to Korea without mom, I felt that I had to take care of myself now. I was 14, such a kid. I didn't speak any Korean. I only knew how to say 'hello,' so it really was a new start. Fortunately, there was Jennie. She was the only one who could speak English along the trainees. I spoke English with her and if something were to happen, I would talk to her."

Lisa officially joined YG as a trainee in 2011 and trained for five years. During that time, Lisa designed the choreography for every dance during practices. "At the end of every month, our boss and all the producers would come, and we'd perform a solo song, a group song, and a group choreography," says Rosé.

"For that, we'd have to plan everything ourselves, but we each had a role," Lisa adds. "If someone was in charge of vocals, we'd give them that role, but I always took on the role of the dancer. So I'd always design the choreography. Every month! Literally every month for five years."

Currently, Lisa is the main rapper and also the lead dancer of BLACKPINK. She was the first non-ethnically Korean to debut under YG. Like the rest of her fellow BLACKPINK members, Lisa has landed many television appearances on Korean variety shows and endorsement deals from brands. She served as  Moonshot 's brand ambassador in 2018; in 2019, she became the muse for Hedi Slimane of Celine. In 2020, Lisa was crowned the newest brand ambassador of  Bulgari  and participated in the Serpenti and B.zero1 campaigns.

A few more fun facts about Lisa: She loves vintage clothes and will pop into vintage shops wherever she travels. She has a lifestyle YouTube channel called Lilifilm Official.   On her birthday this year, Lisa released a limited-edition photo book through YG, titled 0327, which featured self-shot photos taken with a film camera. (The book, naturally, sold out immediately.) She is super close with Rosé, as they're both the same age and have similar tastes. "Since we both came from another country, we relied on each other when we were having a hard time. We become like two peas in a pod," says Lisa. "We were like genuine twins."

Rosé adds, "We have so many days where we walk out, and we're wearing the same thing. And during our days off, we'd always be together. [Lisa] started getting an Australian accent."

BLACKPINK: What You Need to Know About K-Pop's Biggest Girl Group

BLACKPINK rose to the top of the U.S. pop charts in 2020, but this is not the group's first time in the spotlight

The four-member South Korean girl band — who get their name from the mixture of tough "black" and flirty "pink" of their songs — have been global superstars since the release of their 2016 single " Boombayah ." And, in 2023, the group is rumored to be Coachella headliners , where they would reportedly make history as the first K-pop headlining act.

Why are they called BLACKPINK?

Formed by YG Entertainment under the famous K-pop trainee system in South Korea, the members auditioned with the entertainment agency to become students or "trainees," hoping to one day make their debut as recording artists. When BLACKPINK debuted, their label YG Entertainment said the name intends to convey that the group embodies more than beauty — there's a toughness, too.

"The meaning of BLACKPINK aims to contradict the common perception of the color pink," the statement read. "Pink is commonly used to portray prettiness, but BLACKPINK actually means to say that 'Pretty isn't everything.' It also symbolizes that they are a team that encompasses not only beauty but also great talent."

How is BLACKPINK different from other K-pop groups?

Between their debut in 2016 and the 2020 release of The Album , BLACKPINK released fewer than two dozen songs, all singles. Despite the small discography, the group's glam look and fun choreography were quickly replicated by other K-pop groups and fans in their social media videos.

The most significant part of BLACKPINK's popularity lies in the group's undeniable stage presence and their songs and bilingual lyrics, which talk about independence and vulnerability. BLACKPINK is also known for their video styling or "concepts" for each song. Where some K-pop videos might have two or three concepts in their music videos, BLACKPINK will often have five or six completely different concepts (complete with varying hair colors and clothing) featured in their video.

Who are the members of BLACKPINK?

Kim Jisoo is a singer who is often referred to as "adorable" by BLINKs (the official name of BLACKPINK fans). She's known for her steadiness and composure — and for balancing random objects on her head or shoulders. Previous videos showed her with a cup or an award on her head. Jisoo acted in commercials before BLACKPINK and has starred on the JTBC historical K-drama series Snowdrop (also available to stream on Disney+ ) since December 2021. Although she is the only member who does not speak English fluently, the singer speaks Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

During a 2019 appearance on The Late Show with James Corden , Jisoo's unflappable calm impressed the host.

Jisoo will soon be in familiar company with the rest of her bandmates with the release of her long-awaited solo album, which is expected later in 2023 after BLACKPINK's rumored headlining performance at Coachella.

YG Entertainment issued a statement in January 2023, confirming the exciting news.

"BLACKPINK's Jisoo is currently working hard on recording her solo album. While carrying out a busy world tour schedule since last year, she finished the album jacket photo shoot and worked on music production whenever she got the time in order to keep the promise with fans. She will greet fans soon with good news."

Kim Jennie was in the trainee program for nearly six years — the longest of the members. Jennie lived in New Zealand before moving back to South Korea in 2010 and speaks fluent English, Korean and Japanese. She was the first member of BLACKPINK to release an individual track in 2018 titled "SOLO."

In 2021, Jennie was named the new face of Hera , a Seoul-based beauty company. She is set to make her acting debut in 2023 opposite Lily-Rose Depp on the HBO drama The Idol under the stage name Jennie Ruby Jane. The series is co-created by singer The Weeknd and Euphoria writer and director Sam Levinson.

Park Chaeyoung (Rosé) was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia — where she auditioned for YG Entertainment. Rosé is fluent in English and learned Korean after moving to South Korea to participate in the trainee program. She is the group's main singer, and fans claim her distinct voice is easily recognizable. On a promotional appearance for The Album , Rosé impressed fans (and Shakira herself) with her impressive take on the 2010 song "Waka Waka."

Rosé released her solo album, R , in March 2021, featuring the songs "On the Ground" and "Gone."

Lalisa Pranpriya Manoban (also spelled Manobal) is known for both her rap and dance skills. Born and raised in Thailand, Lisa (like Rosé) learned Korean after moving to South Korea in 2011. Lisa also speaks English and Japanese. During promo appearances, Lisa often showcases her impromptu dancing skills, creating viral moments for the group.

Lisa released her debut single album, LALISA , in September 2021, which features the songs "Lalisa" and "Money." The title song's music video won the MTV Video Music Award for best K-pop video in 2022 and was honored by Guinness World Records as the "most viewed YouTube music video by a solo artist in 24 hours" and "most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a solo K-pop artist."

Lisa shared with Billboard how she chose the two songs for her album.

"I heard 'Money' first and told Teddy, 'Oh my God, Teddy oppa , I have to do this song, I want this to be my solo song.' And he was like, 'OK, let's do it!' And then we heard [an early version of] 'Lalisa,' but the hook was another thing," she said. "Teddy had the idea to put my name in the hook. At first, I was like, 'Whaaa … I think it's kind of weird to keep repeating my name. How's it going to sound?' And then we tried it, and it came out so cool. I really like it."

How long has BLACKPINK been together?

BLACKPINK debuted in 2016 with the mini album Square One, which consisted of only two songs — "Whistle" and "Boombayah." The debut was heavily promoted in the K-pop scene as BLACKPINK was the first girl group from YG Entertainment in seven years. "Boombayah" galloped straight out of the gate to hit No. 1 on Billboard 's World Digital Songs chart, and their popularity continued with additional releases in the following year.

In 2018, BLACKPINK made headlines again with their single "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" from the EP Square Up . A few months later, the group branched out by working with Dua Lipa on the track "Kiss and Make Up."

YG Entertainment positioned BLACKPINK for a global market by partnering with Interscope Records and Universal Music Group in October 2018. BLACKPINK then focused on the U.S. market with performances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , Good Morning America and the 2019 Coachella music festival .

What about BLACKPINK songs?

For an introduction to BLACKPINK music, start with their debut single, " Boombayah ." The video for the song has an upbeat and fun girls-night-out vibe (ending in a party at a retro roller-skating rink). The video offers viewers a peek at the group's impending stardom with sharp choreography and a flair for visuals.

Next, move on to "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" — the 2018 comeback single is a rapid-fire whirlwind of tough-girl cool. Follow up with "Whistle," "As If It's Your Last," "Lovesick Girls" and "Playing With Fire," each of which has introspective melodies with lyrics full of love, eagerness and passion.

On the other hand, the 2020 track " Ice Cream ," featuring Selena Gomez , is a rare sexy song from the group , showcasing double entendre lyrics against a hypnotic beat. Check out the animated version of the video to see BLACKPINK rendered as Zepeto — an app that allows users to turn themselves into 3D animated characters.

"Pretty Savage" and "Crazy Over You" from the band's debut album highlight the group's vocal prowess, with maple syrup smooth lyrics against a can't-get-it-out-of-your-head melody. "Bet You Wanna," featuring Cardi B , is a fun song for the brand, with bubblegum pop lyrics meant for summertime pool parties or dancing in the kitchen while you make dinner.

End with fan favorites " Kill This Love " and " How You Like That " to see how the group has grown into its own: The two songs showcase girl power, sick beats and in-your-face optimism.

Once you've added those tracks to your playlist, listen to BLACKPINK's 2022 album, BORN PINK , featuring the singles "Pink Venom" and "Shut Down," which both hit No. 1 on Billboard 's Global 200 chart .

What does "BLACKPINK in your area" mean?

The band's signature phrase, first uttered in their debut song, "Boombayah," declares the group's global domination plan. With every new song, BLACKPINK teases snippets of new concepts, hair colors and clothing. And the publicity has paid off. The group now has amassed over 83 million subscribers and counting on its YouTube channel — with the video for "Kill This Love" reaching over 1.7 billion views as of January 2023.

Loyal fans count everything from each member's line distribution on songs to who keeps the center position in the choreography. BLACKPINK, eager to give the fans what they want, often uploads practice videos of the group practicing their choreography, like the popular instructional video for "Lovesick Girls."

Fans also flock to what's known as "fancams" — concert videos that focus on one member of the group's performance. Search for " BLACKPINK fancam " on YouTube, and you'll find dozens of videos from their live performances, each highlighting one member at a time. The popularity of BLACKPINK means new business ventures for its members: Jisoo has worked as a Dior ambassador, Jennie for Chanel, Rosé for Saint Laurent and Lisa for Celine.

Netflix also paired with BLACKPINK to air their 2020 documentary BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky — a look behind the scenes of the band's inner workings. For a peek into the (almost) off-duty personality of the band, look for " BLACKPINK 24 365 " on YouTube.
