The global economy is changing, with jobs disappearing due to automation and others emerging as a result of technological advances and innovations. This new reality is changing the way students need to learn, connect, interact, and interpret the world around them. The skills developed by students through STEM education — from problem solving and creativity, to teamwork and digital literacy — provide them with the foundation to adapt and thrive in this fast changing world.
This Collection invites research and review articles that provide fresh perspectives on all aspects of STEM teaching, learning, and assessment. We welcome research both empirical and conceptual from all areas of the social and behavioural sciences. Perspectives are encouraged from all geographic regions and learning contexts, including day care, pre-k, kindergarten, primary, elementary, secondary, vocational, higher education, teacher training colleges, and open and distance education.

Parent involvement and student academic motivation towards science in 9th grade
Parents’ beliefs and behavior act as both explicit and implicit ways of communicating the value of science and their confidence that their child can be successful in science-related classes. Using the NCES High School Longitudinal Survey (HSLS:09), we examined how parent beliefs and behaviors regarding their 9th grader’s science education predicted the students’ motivation in science. Using multiple regression indicates that the combination of parental education, beliefs, and involvement in science-related activities with their child are weak but significant predictors of students’ academic motivation in science ( adjR 2 = 0.04, F (6, 14,933) = 26.32, P < 0.001). In particular, parent education and parent involvement have positive and significant effects on students’ science identity and science self-efficacy. These findings suggest that students may have a stronger academic motivation in science with parents who have higher levels of education, more confidence in their ability to help their child in science, and who engage in more science activities with their child.

The Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research is a quarterly, peer-reviewed publication for educators in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. The journal emphasizes real-world case studies that focus on issues that are relevant and important to STEM practitioners. These studies may showcase field research as well as secondary-sourced cases. The journal encourages case studies that cut across the different STEM areas and that cover non-technical issues such as finance, cost, management, risk, safety, etc. Case studies are typically framed around problems and issues facing a decision maker in an organization.
The Journal of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education: Innovations and Research publishes peer-reviewed:
- real-world case studies and other innovations in education
- research articles from educational research that inform the readers on teaching and learning endeavors in STEM
- articles that discuss recent developments that have an impact on STEM education in areas such as policy and industry needs
The case studies may include color photographs, charts, and other visual aids in order to bring engineering topics alive. The research articles will focus on innovations that have been implemented in educational institutions. These case studies and articles are expected to be used by faculty members in universities, four-year colleges, two-year colleges, and high schools. In addition, the journal provides information that would help the STEM instructors in their educational mission by publishing:
- a comprehensive list of articles that appeared in other journals
- grant announcements related to STEM education
- advertisements from companies

The Impact of Authentic Early Childhood STEM Experiences on Cognitive Development

Early experiences in STEM education can contribute to positive cognitive development in young children. When students have the opportunities to play, inquire, follow their interests/curiosities, develop STEM identities, be creative, and operate within concrete/contextualized STEM explorations, they will experience expansive cognitive growth. Cognitive benefits include expanded thought capacity, increased creativity, better problem-solving abilities, a developing capacity for research, better exploration processes, and better observational powers. Implications for practice and recommendations for educators are discussed.

Instructional Enhancement Fund
The Instructional Enhancement Fund (IEF) awards grants of up to $500 to support the timely integration of new learning activities into an existing undergraduate or graduate course. All Yale instructors of record, including tenured and tenure-track faculty, clinical instructional faculty, lecturers, lectors, and part-time acting instructors (PTAIs), are eligible to apply. Award decisions are typically provided within two weeks to help instructors implement ideas for the current semester.

The role of STEM Education in improving the quality of education: a bibliometric study

The United Nations (UN) has launched several initiatives to promote the role of education in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and set Goal 4 for quality education among other SDGs. The integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach is a promising educational framework for sustainable development that improves education quality. In this study, a bibliometric analysis was conducted to evaluate the scientific results of the role of integrated STEM education specifically in improving the quality of education (SDG 4). A hundred and fifty publications, with an increasing trend in the number of documents each year, out of the total number of 74,879 documents related to “education quality” and 5,430 documents related to “STEM education” were chosen from the SCOPUS database. The study analyzes the growth and development of research activities in the area of “STEM education” and “Quality education” as reflected in the publications output in the time span of 27 years from 1993 to 2020. The publication and citation trends, the most frequently used keywords, the most influential authors and journals, and the research hotspots were investigated using VoSviewer and Bibliometrix software. Accordingly, the United States happened to be the most productive country in this field owning two-thirds of the number of publications. The “Science Education” journal is ranked at the top of the highly cited journals. The findings show that topics such as “early childhood education”, “computing education”, and “environmental education” are the main hotspots in the research area of STEM and quality of education. The results of this study will help enhance the understanding of integrated STEM education in improving the quality of education and will support future works in this area.

Students in STEM fields develop advanced skills and abilities, and are more likely to participate in daily problem-solving and decision-making (Morrison, 2006), as well as have better job prospects (Zollman, 2012).STEM education seeks to meet students' social and personal needs, become truly satisfied, active people, and better work in the environment made from human beings (Zollman, 2012).
The STEM community responded vigorously to produce the Sputnik-spurred education reforms of the 1960s. Likewise, the United States needs a bold new federal strategy for improving education that includes the creation of high-quality, integrated instruction and materials, as well as the placement of problems associated with grand challenges of society at the center of study.
Emerging technologies can drive changes throughout the educational landscape, leading to redefinition and reshaping of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. Connecting with and developing skills in technologies is invaluable for being part of the rapidly evolving STEM learning and teaching environments.
STEM Education (STEME) is a forum for dissemination and debate via original research into science, technology, engineering and mathematics education by, and for, an international community of STEM education scholars, practitioners and policy-makers at all levels.
