Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants. Check first if you can meet those absolute minimums. Keep in mind that

• each graduate program that you are applying to may have additional requirements that you will find in the Graduate Degree Program listing and on the program website
• entry to UBC is competitive, i.e. each year we receive way more applicants who meet all our requirements than we can accept. Meeting minimum and program requirements is not a guarantee that you will be admitted.

Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application.

Some of our programs require additional components, such as GRE or GMAT scores, as well as certain course or degree requirements.

Meet Deadlines

All deadlines are program specific and can range from November of the previous year to April of a year for a September intake. The most important deadline is the application deadline. Without meeting the application deadline , a file may not be considered for evaluation. No changes can be made to the application after submission. Graduate programs can set two other deadlines - which may be the same as the application deadline or provide slightly more time to complete specific actions:

• Transcript deadline : Deadline to upload scans of official transcripts through the applicant portal in support of a submitted application. Information for accessing the applicant portal will be provided after submitting an online application for admission.
• Referee deadline : Deadline for the referees identified in the application for admission to submit references. See Letters of Reference for more information.

Prepare Your Application

Academic documents.

Each entry under the Academic History section of the application must include pdf copies of official, up-to-date, transcripts for all current and previous post-secondary study.

Online Application and Fee

Reference Letters

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications. 

Statement of Interest

A statement of interest is an important part of most graduate school applications. It may also be called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar. 

English Language Test

Gre or other tests.

Programs might request additional test scores. Please refer to specific Graduate Degree Programs for detailed information specific admission requirements.

Criminal Record Check

All students who are enrolled in programs that include a practicum component involving work with children or vulnerable adults will have to undergo a criminal record check before they will be permitted to register in the practicum.

Prior to an admission decision

While you wait for your application to be evaluated, there are a few things to bear in mind.

• Check your online application portal for the status of your application, references, English language scores (if applicable), and any additional information or documentation requested by the program.
• That the Referee received the request (ask them to check junk filters)
• That the Referee actually clicked the Submit button. They may have uploaded the reference but overlooked the final submission step.
• If you have multiple email addresses, ensure you’re checking the one you used in your application as you’ll be alerted to the program decision, or requests for additional information, by email.

Please be patient, and resist the temptation to ask the program about the status of your application. UBC receives approximately 20,000 applications to graduate school. Rest assured that your program is working hard to evaluate applications and make admissions decisions as efficiently as possible. Most admission decisions are made in February and March, but this is highly dependent on the program to which you have applied and therefore, offers and declines can also be expected before and after this peak.

An increasingly attractive and multicultural study destination, Canada is a great option to consider for your PhD studies, offering a wealth of research opportunities to help you expand your expertise. More than a third of the country’s overall research is conducted at Canadian universities, and this work contributes billions to the country’s economy.

The requirements to study in Canada at doctorate level vary between universities and courses, but you generally need the following:

• A master’s degree in a related field, with strong grades and proven research ability and potential.
• Proof of language ability, depending on whether you study in English or French, if either language is not your first language and you haven’t previously studied in either language. (Some programs in French-speaking Quebec are conducted in both languages).
• A strong score in a graduate admissions test such as the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

In exceptional cases, you may be able to study a PhD with “accelerated admission” – that is, without a master’s degree. In this process, you’ll need to have outstanding grades in the last two years of your bachelor’s degree (a first-class average) and other demonstrations of your high academic potential, such as research publications.

Most PhDs in Canada take about four to six years to complete.

Although the admissions process can vary between Canadian universities, you’ll generally need to follow the following steps to apply for a PhD:

1.  Decide which PhD course you’d like to apply for , identifying your supervisor and chosen research topic. This may be an advertised, structured PhD in which the scope of the research is already outlined by the university (particularly in the sciences), or alternatively (particularly in arts and humanities) you could suggest and outline your own research project with an open PhD. Once you’ve found a supervisor, some universities may ask for a letter of support from your chosen supervisor to be included in your application documents.

2. If applying for an open PhD, you’ll need to submit a research proposal following the guidelines set by your university and generally outlining what you want to research, and why this is a worthwhile project.

3. Apply online, paying the appropriate application fee and attaching the necessary documents to your application. This could be all or some of the following:

• Statement of purpose – this should outline your background and academic/professional experience, including any awards, publications or relevant experience you can offer. You should also discuss your career goals and anything else stipulated by the university, keeping to the word limit.
• Two or three letters of reference (including one from your intended supervisor). Your referees should be academic, where possible.
• Academic transcripts and degree certificates – Canadian universities may require that your university mails an official transcript, which should be in English or accompanied by a perfectly translated document.
• Writing sample (most likely for arts and humanities PhDs)
• Your Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Language test results, if needed
• Portfolio of creative work (if applying for an arts/humanities PhD)

Some Canadian universities may also ask you to attend an admission interview .

4. Once accepted, the next step is to apply for your study permit , which acts as your student visa for your stay. You should also take out health insurance, and check your university’s website for orientation advice.

Tuition fees for a PhD in Canada vary between universities and courses, and will generally be around twice that of fees for Canadian students. An exception to this is the University of Toronto , where most international PhD students will pay the same tuition fees as domestic students, starting from fall 2018.

To give you an example of the cost of a PhD in Canada, the  University of British Columbia charges CA$7,641 (~US$5,760) per year for Masters by Research or PhDs, while PhDs are CA$$10,240 (~US$7,700) in years one and two at the  University of Manitoba .

Thankfully, many PhD scholarships are available to help make studying in Canada more affordable to international students, with many awards based on academic merit. The Canadian government runs a useful website with a  search tool  to find scholarships based on your country of origin. Other good places to look are the official websites of Canadian universities, which may provide their own scholarships search tool to help you find one relevant to your situation and country of origin.

Some examples of PhD scholarships to study in Canada include:

• The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships , which award CA$50,000 (~US$37,700) per year to highly-qualified international and home PhD students in the fields of social sciences and/or humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.
• The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation doctoral scholarships , which at the time of writing is currently in the process of being reworked.
• The University of British Columbia Four Year Doctoral Fellowship  provides a stipend of at least CA$18,200 (~US$13,700) per year plus full tuition for outstanding international/home doctoral students for all four years of their studies.

Teaching/research assistantships

Many students also decide to fund their studies by taking part in a research or teaching assistantship – in these, you can work as a teaching or research assistant in exchange for a stipend and/or have your tuition fully or partially covered.

As a research assistant, you’ll work to help a faculty member (which may be your supervisor) by assisting with data collection, analysis, report writing, lab/office organization and other tasks. As a teaching assistant, you’ll support your department with its undergraduate programs, teaching one or more sections of the course, conducting laboratory sections, holding office hours and grading undergraduate papers. To become a teaching assistant, you’ll need to demonstrate your mastery of the course and ability to effectively facilitate students’ learning.

To apply for a research or teaching assistantship, you’ll need to check the information posted by your university and likely fill in an online application form.   

Yes, all full-time students with a valid study permit can work part-time on or off campus for up to 20 hours per week during university semesters and full time during semester breaks. However, some PhD courses may stipulate that you shouldn’t work for more than 10 hours per week during term time – particularly if you’ve been granted funding to study in Canada. It’s also important to consider that your PhD will take up a considerable amount of time and challenging work, so you might prefer to focus entirely on your studies. Also, it’s not advised to rely on part-time work to fund your living expenses. You’ll need a Social Insurance Number to work in Canada.

Yes – if you’d like to stay after graduation to find work in Canada, you can apply for the P ost-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) which allows you to stay and gain valuable work experience for a maximum of three years. While this guide covers the main questions that students might have around applying for a PhD in Canada, it is important to check the requirements for your university and ask the admissions team if you have any questions about the process.

Once you have decided to apply to a PhD programme in Canada, you can use degree databases to find which university offers PhDs in your area of interest, such as  Universities Canada or provincial bodies such as Education Planner BC . Search engines or other global commercial degree directories may also help you identify a suitable programme.

Alternatively, you could search for which faculty members conduct research in your area via publication databases and then look up the universities where they teach.

If you already know which university you are most interested in, you should look at both its departmental/programme web pages and the pages of a central graduate school if applicable.

Unlike at undergraduate level, where you can apply via a central application system, application to graduate programmes is usually targeted to each programme, which can vary across institutions.

What qualifications do I need to apply for a PhD ?

We recommend that applicants check the admissions requirements for their programme of interest.

In terms of qualities admission committees may be looking for, these will vary by subject area – for example graduate programmes in natural sciences may look for different attributes from those in the performing arts. 

Graduate students in Canada are usually expected to work independently and be self-directed. As such, applicants may want to provide evidence of how they have taken initiative and shown self-direction and perseverance. Passion, curiosity, focus, commitment, collegiality and enthusiasm are all qualities that applicants may find mentioned on programme websites.

How do I look for a PhD supervisor?

The first step would be to check with your programme of interest to see if contact with a supervisor is encouraged or required. Processes vary and some programmes assign you supervisors based on interests identified in your application, some require commitment from a supervisor prior to the application, and some may determine supervisors after some initial coursework or rotations.

If a programme requires you to contact potential supervisors, begin by researching faculty members and their research topics. Most universities, including the University of British Columbia  (UBC), have a research supervisor database where prospective students can search faculty. 

Candidates should read recent papers by potential supervisors and look for a good match between their own interests and those of the faculty member. Reading graduate student stories can also help, as applicants will be able to see current research projects students are working on, and get a sense of the faculty or programme they are looking into.

Once you have found a faculty member you would like to work with, you can reach out to them individually. Prospective students should be aware that academics often receive many such requests every week. Plan carefully who to contact and customise each message to the particular faculty member, explaining your research interests and why you are interested in working with them.

How should I write my research proposal?

Your research proposal is a crucial part of your application. It gives a sense of how prepared you are to conduct research and what directions of research you’re likely to pursue. A specific proposal is more likely to impress than some general ideas.

Your research areas and interests may change once you have entered your programme, so you will not be held to the ideas you’ve proposed. However, it gives prospective supervisors a sense of how your research aligns with theirs and that of the department in general.

Be sure to stay within the word count requested, and of course it’s essential you avoid any spelling or grammatical errors. We always recommend that applicants write several iterations of their research proposal and gain feedback from friends, colleagues and, if possible, professors at each stage. When you approach previous professors for a letter of reference, it’s worth sharing your proposal to get their feedback on it.

When should I start applying?

Applicants need to meet the application deadlines, which are often a year or more in advance of the desired start date (eg apply in December to start the following September). On top of that it is important to allocate enough time to prepare and complete various steps to be able to submit a completed application in time.

International applicants will need to ensure there is enough time to take the required English language tests. Applicants should also check if they have to complete any other courses before applying and that they have enough time to collect the necessary documentation and proofread everything. 

We recommend that prospective students review application timelines for their programme of interest and then plan backwards, ensuring they have time to complete all aspects of the application. All the steps may take longer than expected, so give yourself extra time to compile the strongest possible application.

How long will the application process take?

This will depend on each university, programme and sometimes supervisor. Once you have applied, the process will probably take a further two to three months at least. At UBC, many graduate programmes close applications in December and January, with offers being made February to April as a rough guideline. Depending on subject area, applications can close as late as April or May for a September start though.

What supporting documents do I need as an international student?

In general, required supporting documents won’t be too different from those for a domestic applicant, with the exception being proof of English language ability. Examples of supporting documents could be: 

• Transcripts of all post-secondary courses/degrees previously enrolled in
• Reference letters 
• Statement of interest/research statement
• English language test scores
• Depending on programme, test scores or portfolio

Many institutions allow applicants to apply with scans of their transcripts initially. However, once applicants receive an admission offer they will usually have to submit official copies, which may include translations for international applicants. 

International applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with other details, such as study permit procedures, work opportunities and health insurance. While not required for the application itself, these are important considerations for which to plan and budget if the application is successful.

Do I have to pay for my PhD application?

Most universities in Canada will charge an application fee. At UBC, the application fee for international applicants is CAD$168.25. UBC automatically waives these fees for applicants from countries identified among the world’s 50 least developed nations. Other universities in Canada may have similar measures in place, so be sure to check this.

Other than application fees, students should make a financial plan that incorporates tuition and living costs, as well as checking what financial aid you could be eligible for and which scholarships are available for international students.

PhD Degrees in Canada

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at global universities. Study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the program. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and as such a student is expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. PhD Entry Requirements

Canadian institutions are free to admit anyone to a PhD program, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours, as well as a master's degree . There is usually a first-year assessment to remain in study and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed program.

You will find the cheapest tuition fees for international students in Newfoundland and Labrador regions, where undergrad programmes cost around 16,000 CAN on average, while postgraduate programmes 5,000 CAD. 

While international students in Canada are not eligible for tuition fee waivers, some universities may offer you small deductions or rebates based on proof of financial need or academic merit.

Can I study in Canada for free?

International students don’t have the option of studying for free in Canada. They usually pay higher fees than domestic students do. Of course, there is the option of applying for scholarships, or other types of financial aid, which could eventually cover your tuition fees entirely or partially. Such financial aid would be your ‘Study in Canada for Free’ ticket. 

Financial Aid and Scholarships in Canada

Although Canadian universities tend to be more affordable than other English-speaking countries, tuition fees can be a pain for international students, especially since there is no option to study for free. This is where financial aid and scholarships come in.  

Although it may be a clever idea to check if any organisations in your home country provide bursaries, scholarships or grants to students accepted at Canadian universities, you also have diverse options to choose from in Canada.  

If you're a student looking for financial assistance to further your education, scholarships can be a great option. But before developing what types of scholarships you can apply for, there are a few more types of financial aid to consider: 

• Grants. Grants are offered if you meet certain eligibility requirements. You must repay the grant money if you fail to complete the degree programme (you drop out, etc.). Most Canadian universities and colleges follow a two-semester system, where classes occur from September to May, but exact dates can differ between regions or institutions.

When to apply for Canadian universities

The deadlines to apply for university in Canada vary, but you should prepare eight to twelve months earlier. International students usually start school in September or January, but some universities also organise spring and summer admissions. So deciding when to apply to Canadian universities depends on when classes start at your school. 

For the fall semester, which begins in September, the deadline to apply for university is often set months earlier, in January or February of the same year. For programmes that start in January, deadlines are usually in November or December of the previous year.

Documents needed to apply for university

Most universities have an online application process, so you can apply directly through their websites. Language requirements

If you plan to study at a university in Canada, you must prove your proficiency in English or French, depending on the university and programme that you apply to. Your language certificate must be less than 2 years old, and the Canadian authorities will compare your results to their standards: the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CBL) for English and the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens, for French. There is no limit on how many times you can take these tests, but the rules say you must wait some time (30-60 days) before giving it another go.

• Oral comprehension (60 questions), 40 minutes long, 
• Written expression (2 subjects to be covered), 60 minutes long, 
• Vocabulary and syntax (40 questions), 30 minutes long.

2. Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF)

The exam is divided into mandatory multiple-choice tests and optional tests and is managed by France Éducation International. You’ll spend between 1 and a half hours minimum and 2 and a half hours maximum, depending on the number of tests you take: 

• Listening comprehension:  29 multiple choice questions, 25 minutes; 
• Grammar comprehension: 18 multiple choice questions, 15 minutes;

Governing Law

You and TC Global agree that any cause of action arising out of or related to the Service must commence within one (1) year after the cause of action arose; otherwise, such cause of action is permanently barred.

Terms of Use and all other policies available on this Service shall be interpreted and construed in accordance with the laws of India. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms of Use and/ or other policies available on this App, including any question regarding its existence, validity or termination, shall be referred to and finally resolved by arbitration administered by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC") in accordance with the Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC Rules") for the time being in force, which rules are deemed to be incorporated by reference in this clause. The Tribunal shall consist of 3 arbitrators. The seat and venue of Arbitration shall be Singapore and the language of proceedings shall be English. Subject to the foregoing, the Courts of Singapore shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes relating to the subject matter, herein.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, if a dispute arises with respect to the validity, scope, enforceability, inventorship, ownership, infringement, breach or unauthorised use of any patent, trademark, copyright or other intellectual property right or any non-proprietary data owned and/or controlled by TC Global, whether or not arising from the Terms of Use, such dispute (at the option of TC Global) shall not be submitted to arbitration and instead, TC Global shall be free to initiate litigation, including but not limited to a claim for interim injunctive relief, in a court of competent jurisdiction, in any country or other jurisdiction in which such rights apply.

Integration and Severability

These Terms of Use are the entire agreement between you and TC Global with respect to the Service and use of the Site, Service, Content or User Submissions, and supersede all prior or contemporaneous communications and proposals (whether oral, written or electronic) between you and TC Global with respect to the Site. This is evidenced by the 2016-2017 data from the 2017 Open Doors Report , which revealed a total of almost 291,000 international students in the U.S.

According to the report, most international students chose the same top two areas of study, regardless of whether they studied in Canada or the U.S. The top subject areas were business and engineering.

Which country should you choose for your PhD? The best way to make a decision is to analyze the pros and cons of each country. In this blog post, we will help you arrive at a decision by describing the major differences between PhD studies in the U.S. and Canada.

Requirements for Admission to a PhD Program in the U.S. Versus Canada

The general admission requirements for a PhD in the U.S. and Canada are similar. Both countries usually require the following:

• High score on a graduate admissions tests, such as the GMAT or GRE
• Language certificates (English for the U.S., and English or French for Canada)
• Statement of purpose
• Research proposal
• Letters of recommendation
• Writing sample

Although most differences between pursuing a PhD in Canada or the U.S. will be visible during the program itself, there are two key differences that might make you favor one country over the other:

• To apply for a doctoral degree in the U.S. , a master’s degree is not necessary, whereas in Canada it is. U.S. universities accept students who have only a bachelor’s degree because the structure of PhD programs is typically longer and is designed to include part of the curriculum from master’s programs. Whereas in Canada, it is rare that students without a master’s degree can pursue a PhD. • Although the research proposal is an important admissions component in the U.S., PhD students are expected to develop their theses and research during their second or third year. What to Expect as a PhD Student in Canada

In Canadian PhD programs, you will be expected to participate in small group seminars and you will likely spend about 20 hours per week reading. Additionally, you will be required to do research on your thesis from the start, publish several peer-reviewed articles, and proactively apply for fellowships and scholarships to further fund your research.

Moreover, it is likely you will also participate in Teaching Assistantships (TAs) and Research Assistantships (RAs), which might take up to 20 hours per week of your time. Although 40 hours per week is the average time you are expected to invest in your doctoral studies, depending on the program, you might find yourself working even more.

Although PhD programs in Canada are typically designed to last about four years, it is more realistic to expect that you will finish your doctorate in five or more years. This is important to remember because some programs do not allow for extended funding, so you might have to pay tuition for the extra years you take to complete your studies.

What to Expect as a PhD Student in the U.S.

Things are a bit different in U.S. PhD programs. In the U.S., there is no time pressure to complete your PhD program. The timeline to complete a PhD is typically five to six years. If it takes you longer, it is not a problem because you can keep your funding until you complete your program. The system is so flexible that some students finish their program in three years with extensive amounts of research, while others can take up to eight or even 10 years.

As in Canada, the PhD curriculum in the U.S. includes seminars, but more of them, and naturally, a lot of reading and research. Additionally, you will be asked to publish peer-reviewed articles, but they do not count as much in the U.S. as in Canada.

This is tricky because it might mean that you do not have as much time as you would like to invest in your own research thesis.

The average cost of a PhD program is a lot cheaper in Canada than in the U.S. However, if you are an international student, you should expect higher fees in both countries. Prerequisites

Candidates for the Ph.D. Program must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Completion of a bachelor's degree, preferably in the biological or physical sciences, from an accredited institution. 
• A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. 
• Degree conferral before the program begins (program begins in July).

Suggested undergraduate coursework:

• Applicants to our Ph.D. program are encouraged to have completed coursework with demonstrated proficiency (B average or above) in their math and science courses. Additionally, advanced courses in biology, chemistry, and physiology are encouraged.
• Applicants interested in applying to the Biomedical Engineering and Physiology Track are advised to take courses in quantitative science and engineering, such as signal processing, computer science, and instrumentation.

Our Ph.D. program prepares students to translate scientific discoveries into applications that improve patient care. This requires a wide range of skills, aptitudes, and characteristics. Along with the basic set of prerequisites, the track admissions committees take a holistic approach to admissions; meaning, they take into consideration the many factors that make up an applicant. The only pathway to matriculation at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is through application during the annual application window, September 1 - December 4.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you grasp everything you need to know about the BC PNP International Graduate stream.

The British Columbia International Graduate stream is a key component of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP), which is managed by the province of British Columbia. \

This category targets individuals who have graduated from a recognized Canadian university or college within the past 3 years. To qualify under this sub-category, applicants must secure a job offer from a British Columbia employer.

For BC PNP international graduate requirements, Candidates do not need an Express Entry profile to apply. However, those who meet the eligibility criteria for this stream and have an active Express Entry profile may apply through Express Entry for faster processing.

BC PNP International Graduate: Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the International graduate category of the BC PNP, candidates must meet the following criteria

1. Full Time Job Offer

• Applicants must secure a valid job offer for full-time, permanent employment from a BC employer. The salary for the position should be competitive with the average provincial wages for that occupation.
• The job offer must correspond to a position at National Occupational Classification (NOC) Skill Level 0, A, or B. The BC PNP job offer does not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

2. Language Proficiency

• Candidates with a job offer at National Occupational Classification (NOC) Skill Level B must provide language test results showing proficiency in English or French at CLB 4 or higher.
• Candidates with job offers at NOC Skill Level 0 or A are exempt from the language proficiency requirement.

3. Level of Education

• Candidates must have completed a post-secondary educational credential in Canada within the past 3 years.
• If the candidate has completed a graduate degree at an eligible institution in BC, they may qualify for the BC International Post-Graduate stream

4. Work Experience

• Candidates must have at least 2 years of work experience in the same occupation as the BC job offer
• The candidate must also possess any qualifications required to perform the job in BC

5. Settlement Funds

• All candidates must meet the settlement funds requirement as determined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
• This can be demonstrated through personal finances or by maintaining a valid offer of employment

If you have a master’s or doctoral degree in science from the past 2 years from a qualified program at a college or university in British Columbia, you might be able to apply under the International Post Graduate category.

Step 2: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

• If ranked among the highest-scoring candidates, you will receive an ITA during one of the stream’s periodic intakes
• You have 30 days to submit a complete application to the stream upon receiving an ITA.

Step 3: Submit a Complete Application

• Submit all required documents, including proof of education, work experience, language proficiency (if applicable), and settlement funds
• Ensure your application is complete and accurate to avoid delays

Step 4: Receive Provincial Nomination

• If your application is approved, you will receive a provincial nomination for permanent residence from BC.
• You may request a letter of support for a temporary work permit to begin working in Canada while your application for permanent residence is processed.

Step 5: Apply for Canada Permanent Residence

For express entry applicants:.

• Receive a notification of nomination on your IRCC online account
• Accept the provincial nomination to increase your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score by 600 points.
• Await an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in the next Express Entry draw
• Submit an official application for Canadian permanent residence within the designated timeframe
• Applications submitted through Express Entry are generally processed within 6 months

For Regular Skills Immigration Applicants:

• Submit an official application for permanent residence within 6 months
• Prepare a paper-based application and mail it to the appropriate application centre
• Paper-based PNP applications for permanent residence are generally processed within 18 months.

Our Ph.D. program is designed for individuals aiming to pursue a career in computer science research. Applicants should have a strong background in computer science and demonstrate the ability to conduct research both independently and collaboratively 

PhD Degree Requirements

The Graduate Policy Manual details all of the information on degree requirements, but at a high level:

Our graduate students receive the training and are expected to develop a mastery of their field, gaining a broad familiarity with their discipline by the time they graduate. 

Requirements for the PhD Degree include:

• Coursework: Six graduate-level courses covering four areas out of {artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, systems, databases, scientific computing, software engineering and programming languages, theory, and visual and geometric computing}, and two more graduate courses from any area. Also, 12 credit hours of CMSC 899 (Dissertation Research).
• Proposal: You must pass an oral Ph.D. Preliminary Examination on a research proposal and prepared readings. This must be completed within five years of entering the program.
• Defense: Finally, you must prepare a dissertation presenting an original contribution to the field of computer science and pass a final oral examination on your dissertation research. This must be done within four years after passing the Preliminary Examination.

Program Duration

Typically, full-time doctoral students will:

• Become engaged in research in their first year.
• Identify a dissertation adviser by the end of their second year.
• Identify a dissertation topic by the end of their third year.
• Secure admission to candidacy within 3-4 years.
• Depend on the standards in their fields, publish at least one paper prior to advancing to candidacy, and several prior to graduating.
• Complete all requirements and graduate within 4-6 years.

Financial Information

We are committed to funding all of our PhD students throughout their program,  contingent on making satisfactory progress. This is made possible with a combination of research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships. 

Assistantships and Stipends:

• Guaranteed Assistantships: All PhD students are guaranteed assistantships upon admission. These include positions as research assistants (RAs) on funded projects or as teaching assistants (TAs).
• Competitive Stipends: For the 2023-2024 academic year, stipends range from $29,000 to $31,000 for a 9.5-month appointment, based on educational background and experience. Opportunities to earn additional income during the summer are available through further assistantships or internships at external research labs and companies.
• Tuition and Benefits: Teaching and research assistantships cover tuition for up to 10 credits per semester and provide health insurance, paralleling the benefits offered to university staff and faculty.

Tuition and Fees 

PhD students with full-time graduate assistantships receive tuition remission for up to 10 credits per semester, aligning with the typical enrollment of 6-9 credits. Fellowships

Fellowships can be sourced both from within the University of Maryland and through external organizations:

• Internal Fellowships: Offered directly by UMD or specific departments within the university. For details on these opportunities, you can check out UMD's Fellowship & Awards website .
• External Fellowships: Examples include prestigious awards like the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships and Fulbright Fellowships . To apply for these, students should directly contact the administering agencies or seek assistance from the financial aid office at their current or UMD’s Fellowship Office .

Graduate Program Overview

The department offers PhDs in both mathematics and statistics and MS degrees in applied mathematics and statistics. You'll be part of a department that's committed to excellence in research and teaching in a friendly and diverse academic environment.

Our Faculty and Graduate Students

The majority of your classes will be taught by permanent faculty who provide formal and informal supervision of your progress through your degree program. Beyond that, you'll learn a lot from your fellow students, both in and out of class. At any given time, we have a number of temporary postdoctoral visiting assistant professors; they're usually one to three years past their PhD and they provide a useful bridge between where you are now and your areas of chosen research. 

The department currently has 128 graduate students across four degree programs, of whom approximately 27 percent are women and 52 percent are from outside the U.S. We embrace the diversity of our department and community—see our  statement on equity, inclusion and diversity.  The  UMass chapter  of the Association for Women in Mathematics provides resources and networking opportunities for women and women-identifying mathematicians. We actively seek to increase the proportion of women and of minority students in our programs, including those from backgrounds that have been historically under-represented in STEM fields. International students with strong mathematical preparation and a good command of spoken English are encouraged to apply.

Life in the Department

The early part of your time in the program time will be spent on  coursework . These courses provide the background necessary for further study in mathematics and prepare you for qualifying exams. A diverse group of "topics" courses are offered every year to introduce you to areas in which our faculty are currently working. You can also take directed reading classes with faculty.

Outside of formal class instruction, there are other ways you can participate in the mathematical life of the department. There are a wide variety of seminars covering the range of pure and applied mathematics and statistics, and you're encouraged to attend them to become more familiar with current research. Talks in the department colloquium are meant for a general mathematical audience, and so are generally more accessible to graduate students. Seminars such as  GRASS  and  Reading Seminar in Algebraic Geometry  are specifically aimed at graduate students.

Our graduate students are funded as teaching assistants. The  Teaching Seminar  helps students to become excellent instructors. Graduate students run a  Math Club  for undergraduate students.

Options and Requirements

Mathematics and statistics form separate programs within the department; students are admitted either to one program or the other, and permission is required to change programs. The MS in pure mathematics is normally only offered to students on the PhD track; we do not admit students whose objective is a master's in pure mathematics. The  applied mathematics MS program  is formally a separate program with its own requirements and admission process. It is possible to apply for both the PhD and MS in statistics with the same application.
