How To Use Lyrics in Your Speech

  • Song lyrics work best if you both know and love the song . It doesn’t matter too much if it’s obscure and no one else will recognise it. In fact, it may be cuter if they don’t. It’s like a secret code that only connects the newlyweds.
  • Simply put on the Spotify tunes and take the time to truly listen to the words. Sometimes we sing along to tunes without even realising the significance of the sentiment. This is your chance to indulge.
  • Don’t assume the best lyrics will be found in soppy tracks . Some of the most poetic lines can be found elsewhere.
  • Song lyrics work best either near the beginning or end of your speech. At the beginning, they can be used as a springboard to the rest of your content, at the end (just before the toast) they act as a summary of your feelings.
  • For the more musically minded, some speakers could consider singing the lyrics. This, of course, isn’t necessary – and is a risk! Check out our Musical Speech blog to see what sort of musical standard you’re up against.

Lyric Inspiration

Love song lyrics

‘I hope you don’t mind if I put down in words, how wonderful life is now you’re in the world’ (Elton John – Your Song)

Kicking things off with an oldie but a goldie, who sums up love better than Sir Elton? Whether your loved one prefers Elton or Ellie Goulding’s version, this is a surefire winner.

Love song lyrics

‘At last the skies above are blue. My heart was wrapped in clover the night I looked at you’ (Etta James – At Last)

An even older lyric, but nothing says romance like Etta James.

Love song lyrics

‘And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while. ‘Cause you’re amazing just the way you are’ (Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are)

We’ve just about resisted the urge to include a lyric from ‘Marry You’, but – for a slightly more contemporary classic – we had to put Bruno in here somewhere.

Love song lyrics

‘Give your all to me, I’ll give my all to you. You’re my end and my beginning, even when I lose I’m winning’ (John Legend – All Of Me)

OK, it’s pretty much illegal not to mention John Legend’s All Of Me in a romantic lyric list. So here it is – the ultimate wedding song.

Check out more of John’s legendary lyrics .

Love song lyrics

We love finding romantic quotes in unexpected places. We especially love it when a couple of guests will recognise where it came from, and then you can surprise the rest of them with ‘the reveal’…

‘Now and then when I see her face, she takes me away to that special place  and if I’d stare too long I’d probably break down and cry’ (Guns N’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine)

For all the couples who want to get married and ride off into the sunset on matching motorbikes, look no further than Mr Lover-Lover himself, Axl Rose.

Love song lyrics

Adele or Ed Sheeran may work for some people, but if you want to show you’re still effortlessly cool, here are a few alternatives…

‘Every breath that is in your lungs is a tiny little gift to me’ (The White Stripes – Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground)

Because what says love better than an ex-husband and wife who pretended to be brother and sister?

Love song lyrics

‘Come with me, my love, to the sea, the sea of love. I wanna tell you how much I love you’ (Cat Power – Sea Of Love)

… Basically any nineties singer-songwriter has a million lyrics that would be perfect for your wedding.

Love song lyrics

Finally, there’s the lyrics that perfectly sum up your relationship – warts and all. For example…

‘You’re rarer than a can of dandelion and burdock and those other girls are just post-mix lemonade’ (Arctic Monkeys – Suck It And See)

Alex Turner is a master of the kitchen sink love song. And this lyric gets bonus points for an obscure soft drink reference.

Love song lyrics

And finally…

‘I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door’ (The Proclaimers – 500 miles)

Although this ONLY works if you do it in a Scottish accent.

1. Until The Last Falling Star by Matthew Perryman Jones

If there was a chance That we could be lovers I’d write you a book Of handwritten letters And burn them all up to the air Just to start over again If there was a chance That we could be lovers I’d learn how to dance And to hold without touching Oh love Where have you been I’ll wait for your lead to come in So tell me the secret Is there a way into your heart ‘Cause I want to believe it Or will I be wishing Until the last falling star If there was a chance That we could be lovers I’d swim seven oceans And keep going further I’d hold my breath until You slipped those words That belong on your lips So tell me the secret Is there a way into your heart ‘Cause I want to believe it Or will I be wishing Until the last falling star Say a line Could be anything Just stay with me Tonight So tell me the secret Is there a way into your heart ‘Cause I want to believe it Or will I be wishing I’ll keep on wishing Until the last falling star

2. Something by The Beatles

Something in the way she moves Attracts me like no other lover Something in the way she woos me I don’t want to leave her now You know I believe and how Somewhere in her smile she knows That I don’t need no other lover Something in her style that shows me I don’t want to leave her now You know I believe and how You’re asking me will my love grow I don’t know, I don’t know You stick around, now it may show I don’t know, I don’t know Something in the way she knows And all I have to do is think of her Something in the things she shows me I don’t want to leave her now You know I believe and how

3. Let Me Sign by Robert Pattinson

Standing there by the broken tree Her hands were all twisted, she was pointing at me I was damned by the light coming out of her eyes She spoke with a voice that disrupted the sky She said “Walk on over yeah to the bit of shade I will wrap you in my arms and you’ll know you’ve been saved” Let me sign, let me sign

4. Thank You by Led Zeppelin

If the sun refused to shine I would still be loving you, When mountains crumble to the sea There would still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain Whisper of the pain Tears of loves lost in the days gone by. Our love is strong, With you there is no wrong, Together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.

Inspiration’s what you are to me, Inspiration, look and see.

And so today, my world it smiles Your hand in mine, we walk the miles, Thanks to you it will be done For you to me are the only one.

Happiness, no more be sad Happiness…. I’m glad

5. Work Song by Hozier

Boys workin’ on empty Is that the kinda way to face the burning heat? I just think about my baby I’m so full of love I could barely eat There’s nothing sweeter than my baby I’d never want once from the cherry tree Cause my baby’s sweet as can be She’d give me toothaches just from kissin’ me

When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I’ll crawl home to her

Boys, when my baby found me I was three days on a drunken sin I woke with her walls around me Nothin’ in her room but an empty crib And I was burnin’ up a fever I didn’t care much how long I lived But I swear I thought I dreamed her She never asked me once about the wrong I did

My babe would never fret none About what my hands and my body done If the Lord don’t forgive me I’d still have my baby and my babe would have me When I was kissin’ on my baby And she put her love down soft and sweet In the low lamp light I was free Heaven and hell were words to me

6. Sea of Love by The Honeydrippers

Do you remember when we met That’s the day I knew you were my pet I wanna tell you how much I love you

Come with me, my love To the sea, the sea of love I want to tell you just how much I love you

Come with me, to the sea of love

Do you remember when we met That’s the day I knew you were my pet I want to tell you oh how much I love you

I want to tell you oh how much I love you

7. I Will Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab For Cutie

Love of mine, someday you will die But I’ll be close behind and I’ll follow you into the dark No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white Just our hands clasped so tight, waiting for the hint of a spark If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied And illuminate the no’s on their vacancy signs If there’s no one beside you when your soul embarks Then I’ll follow you into the dark In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black And I held my tongue as she told me, Son, fear is the heart of love, so I never went back You and me we’ve seen everything to see From Bangkok to Calgary and the soles of your shoes Are all worn down The time for sleep is now But it’s nothing to cry about ‘Cause we’ll hold each other soon in the blackest of rooms

8. Dance Me To The End Of Love by Leonard Cohen

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin Dance me through the panic ’til I’m gathered safely in Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove Dance me to the end of love Dance me to the end of love Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon Show me slowly what I only know the limits of Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the wedding now, dance me on and on Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long We’re both of us beneath our love, we’re both of us above Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the children who are asking to be born Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin Dance me through the panic till I’m gathered safely in Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove Dance me to the end of love

9. Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap

Sweet disposition Never too soon Oh, reckless abandon Like no one’s watching you A moment, a love A dream aloud A kiss, a cry Our rights, our wrongs A moment, a love A dream aloud A moment, a love A dream, aloud So stay there ‘Cause I’ll be coming over And while our blood’s still young It’s so young, it runs And won’t stop ’til it’s over Won’t stop to surrender Songs of desperation I played them for you A moment, a love A dream aloud A kiss, a cry Our rights, our wrongs A moment, a love A dream aloud A moment, a love A dream aloud Stay there ‘Cause I’ll be coming over And while our blood’s still young It’s so young, it runs And won’t stop ’til it’s over Won’t stop to surrender won’t stop ’til it’s over (A moment, a love) (A dream aloud) (A kiss, a cry) (Our rights, our wrongs) won’t stop ’til it’s over (A moment, a love) (A dream aloud) (A kiss, a cry) (Our rights, our wrongs) won’t stop ’til it’s over (A moment, a love) (A dream aloud) (A kiss, a cry) (Our rights, our wrongs) won’t stop to surrender

10. A Thousand Years by Christina Perri

The day we met, Frozen I held my breath Right from the start I knew that I’d found a home for my heart Beats fast Colors and promises How to be brave? How can I love when I’m afraid to fall But watching you stand alone? All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow One step closer I have died everyday waiting for you Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you For a thousand years I’ll love you for a thousand more Time stands still Beauty in all she is I will be brave I will not let anything take away What’s standing in front of me Every breath Every hour has come to this One step closer I have died everyday waiting for you Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you For a thousand years I’ll love you for a thousand more And all along I believed I would find you Time has brought your heart to me I have loved you for a thousand years I’ll love you for a thousand more I’ll love you for a thousand more Ohh One step closer I have died everyday waiting for you Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you For a thousand years I’ll love you for a thousand more And all along I believed I would find you Time has brought your heart to me I have loved you for a thousand years I’ll love you for a thousand more

11. Your Song Elton John

It’s a little bit funny this feeling inside I’m not one of those who can easily hide, I Don’t have much money but boy if I did I’d buy a big house where we both could live If I was a sculptor, but then again no Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show Oh I know it’s not much but it’s the best I can do My gift is my song And this one’s for you And you can tell everybody this is your song It may be quite simple but now that it’s done I hope you don’t mind I hope you don’t mind That I put down in words How wonderful life is while you’re in the world I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss Well a few of the verses well they’ve got me quite cross But the sun’s been quite kind While I wrote this song It’s for people like you that Keep it turned on So excuse me forgetting But these things I do You see I’ve forgotten If they’re green or they’re blue Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean Yours are the sweetest eyes I’ve ever seen And you can tell everybody this is your song It may be quite simple but Now that it’s done I hope you don’t mind I hope you don’t mind That I put down in words How wonderful life is while you’re in the world I hope you don’t mind I hope you don’t mind That I put down in words How wonderful life is while you’re in the world

12. Blessings by Chance the Rapper

I’m gon’ praise Him, praise Him ’til I’m gone When the praises go up, the blessings come down It seems like blessings keep falling in my lap I don’t make songs for free, I make ’em for freedom Don’t believe in kings, believe in the Kingdom Chisel me into stone, prayer whistle me into song air Dying laughing with Krillin saying something ’bout blonde hair Jesus’ black life ain’t matter, I know I talked to his daddy Said you the man of the house now, look out for your family He has ordered my steps, gave me a sword with a crest And gave Donnie a trumpet in case I get shortness of breath I’m gon’ praise Him, praise Him ’til I’m gone Don’t be mad I’m gon’ praise Him, praise Him ’til I’m gone When the praises go up (Good God) The blessings come down Good God When the praises go up (good God) the blessings come down When the praises go up (It seems like blessings keep falling in my lap) The blessings come down When the praises go up, the blessings come down (Good God) They booked the nicest hotels on the 59th floor With the big wide windows, with the suicide doors Ain’t no blood on my money, ain’t no Twitter in Heaven I know them drugs isn’t close, ain’t no visit in Heaven I know the difference in blessings and worldly possessions Like my ex girl getting pregnant and her becoming my everything I’m at war with my wrongs, I’m writing four different songs I never forced you to forfeit it, I’m a force to be reconciled They want four minute songs You need a four hour praise dance performed every morn I’m feeling shortness of breath, so Nico grab you a horn Hit Jericho with a buzzer beater to end a quarter Watch brick and mortar fall like dripping water, uh! I’m gon’ praise Him, praise Him till I’m gone (Good God) I’m gon’ praise Him, praise Him till I’m gone When the praises go up, the blessings come down (The blessings come down) When the praises go up, the blessings come down The blessings come down When the praises go up, the blessings come down (Are you ready for your blessings?) When the praises go up, the blessings come down (Are you ready for your miracle, are you ready?) It seems like blessings keep falling in my lap

13. I Choose You by Sara Bareilles

Let the bough break, let it come down crashing Let the sun fade out to a dark sky I can’t say I’d even notice it was absent ‘Cause I could live by the light in your eyes I’ll unfold before you Would have strung together The very first words of a lifelong love letter Tell the world that we finally got it all right I choose you I will become yours and you will become mine I choose you I choose You, yeah There was a time when I would have believed them If they told me that you could not come true Just love’s illusion But then you found me And everything changed And I believe in something again My whole heart Will be yours forever This is a beautiful start To a lifelong love letter Tell the world that we finally got it all right I choose You I will become yours and you will become mine I choose You I choose You We are not perfect we’ll learn from our mistakes And as long as it takes I will prove my love to you I am not scared of the elements I am underprepared, But I am willing And even better I get to be the other half of you Tell the world that we finally got it all right I choose You, yeah I will become yours and you will become mine I choose You I choose You I choose You

14. First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes

This is the first day of my life Swear I was born right in the doorway I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed They’re spreading blankets on the beach Yours was the first face that I saw I think I was blind before I met you I don’t know where I am, I don’t know where I’ve been But I know where I want to go And so I’d thought I’d let you know That these things take forever, I especially am slow But I realized that need you And I wondered if I could come home I remember the time you drove all night Just to meet me in the morning And I thought it was strange, you said everything changed You felt as if you just woke up And you said “This is the first day of my life I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you But now I don’t care, I could go anywhere with you And I’d probably be happy” So if you wanna be with me With these things there’s no telling We just have to wait and see But I’d rather be working for a paycheck Than waiting to win the lottery Besides, maybe this time is different I mean, I really think you like me

15. With You by Mariah Carey

It was all so overwhelming She was like “I don’t know, don’t tell me” He had eyes that said “girl, I’ll save you” She had doubts, like they might not make it So they both held tight to face it They wrote vows, she was bound to take ’em She was full of such trepidation There in front of the whole damn nation It was war, can’t predict the comin’ storm Promise that you’ll keep me warm I don’t wanna play this role He said “yo, I’ve been lovin’ you so long Ever since that Bone Thugs song You ain’t gotta break down, you’re too strong” Ooh, shots of Remy Playing Confessions, and our bodies blendin’ Ooh, I’m in love, it’s true Yeah, damn I f*cks with you…

16. You Make Loving Fun by Fleetwood Mac

Sweet wonderful you, You make me happy with the things you do, Oh, can it be so, This feeling follows me wherever I go.

I never did believe in miracles, But I’ve a feeling it’s time to try. I never did believe in the ways of magic, But I’m beginning to wonder why.

Don’t, don’t break the spell, It would be different and you know it will, You, you make loving fun, And I don’t have to tell you you’re the only one.

You make loving fun.

17. Better Together by Jack Johnson

There is no combination of words I could put on the back of a postcard No song that I could sing, but I can try for your heart Our dreams, and they are made out of real things Like a, shoe box of photographs With sepia-toned loving Love is the answer, at least for most of the questions in my heart Like why are we here? And where do we go? And how come it’s so hard? It’s not always easy and Sometimes life can be deceiving I’ll tell you one thing, it’s always better when we’re together It’s always better when we’re together Yeah, we’ll look at the stars when we’re together Well, it’s always better when we’re together Yeah, it’s always better when we’re together And all of these moments Just might find their way into my dreams tonight But I know that they’ll be gone When the morning light sings And brings new things For tomorrow night you see That they’ll be gone too Too many things I have to do But if all of these dreams might find their way Into my day to day scene I’d be under the impression I was somewhere in between With only two Just me and you Not so many things we got to do Or places we got to be We’ll sit beneath the mango tree now Yeah, it’s always better when we’re together We’re somewhere in between together Well, it’s always better when we’re together Yeah, it’s always better when we’re together I believe in memories They look so, so pretty when I sleep Hey now, and when I wake up, You look so pretty sleeping next to me But there is not enough time, And there is no, no song I could sing And there is no combination of words I could say But I will still tell you one thing We’re better together

18. Half of my Heart by John Mayer

I was born in the arms of imaginary friends Free to roam, made a home out of everywhere I’ve been Then you come on crashing in Like the realest thing Tried my best to understand All that your love can bringHalf of my heart’s got a grip on the situation Half of my heart takes time Half of my heart’s got the right mind to tell you That I can’t keep loving you With half of my heartI was made to believe I’d never love somebody else Made a plan, stayed the man who can only love himself Lonely was the song I sang ‘Til the day you came Showing me another way And all that my love can bring

19. Make You Feel My Love by Adele

When the rain is blowing in your face And the whole world is on your case I could offer you a warm embrace To make you feel my love When the evening shadows and the stars appear And there is no one there to dry your tears Oh, I hold you for a million years To make you feel my love I know you haven’t made your mind up yet But I will never do you wrong I’ve known it from the moment that we met No doubt in my mind where you belong I’d go hungry; I’d go black and blue And I’d go crawling down the avenue No, there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do To make you feel my love The storms are raging on the rolling sea And on the highway of regret The winds of change are blowing wild and free You ain’t seen nothing like me yet I could make you happy, make your dreams come true There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do Go to the ends of this Earth for you To make you feel my love, oh yes To make you feel my love

20. Tangled Up In You by Staind

You’re my world The shelter from the rain You’re the pills That take away my pain You’re the light That helps me find my way You’re the words When I have nothing to say And in this world Where nothing else is true Here I am Still tangled up in you I’m still tangled up in you Still tangled up in you You’re the fire That warms me when I’m cold You’re the hand I have to hold as I grow old You’re the shore When I am lost at sea You’re the only thing That I like about me And in this world Where nothing else is true Here I am Still tangled up in you

21. Stuck On The Puzzle by Alex Turner

I’m not the kind of fool Who’s gonna sit and sing to you, About stars, girl.

But last night I looked up into The dark half of the blue, And they’d gone backwards.

Something in your magnetism Must have pissed them off, Forcing them to get an early night.

I have been searching from The bottom to the top For such a sight As the one I caught when I saw your

Fingers dimming the lights Like you’re used to being told that you’re trouble And I spent all night Stuck on the puzzle

Nobody I asked Knew how he came to be the one To whom you surrendered

Any man who wasn’t led away Into the other room Stood pretending

That something in your magnetism Hadn’t just made him drop Whoever’s hand it was that he was holding.

I tried to swim to the side But my feet got caught in the middle And I thought I’d seen the light But oh no.

I was just stuck on the puzzle Stuck on the puzzle.

22. Marry You by Bruno Mars

It’s a beautiful night, we’re looking for something dumb to do Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you Is it the look in your eyes, or is it this dancing juice Who cares baby, I think I wanna marry you Well I know this little chapel on the boulevard We can go No one will know Oh c’mon girl Who cares if we’re trashed Got a pocket full of cash we can blow Shots of Patron And it’s on girl Don’t say no no no no no Just say yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah And we’ll go go go go go If you’re ready, like I’m ready ‘Cause it’s a beautiful night, we’re looking for something dumb to do Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you Is it the look in your eyes or is it this dancing juice Who cares baby, I think I wanna marry you Oh I’ll go get a ring Let the choir bell sing like ooh So what you wanna do Lets just run girl If we wake up and you want to break up That’s cool No I won’t blame you It was fun girl Don’t say no no no no no Just say yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah And we’ll go go go go go If you’re ready, like I’m ready ‘Cause it’s a beautiful night, we’re looking for something dumb to do Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you Is it the look in your eyes, or is it this dancing juice Who cares baby, I think I wanna marry you Just say I do Tell me right now baby Tell me right now baby, baby Just say I do Tell me right now baby Tell me right now baby, baby Oh It’s a beautiful night, we’re looking for something dumb to do Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you Is it the look in your eyes, or is it this dancing juice Who cares baby, I think I wanna marry you

24. To Build a Home by The Cinematic Orchestra

There is a house built out of stone Wooden floors, walls and window sills Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust This is a place where I don’t feel alone This is a place where I feel at home ‘Cause, I built a home For you For me Until it disappeared From me From you And now, it’s time to leave and turn to dust Out in the garden where we planted the seeds There is a tree as old as me Branches were sewn by the color of green Ground had arose and passed it’s knees By the cracks of the skin I climbed to the top I climbed the tree to see the world When the gusts came around to blow me down I held on as tightly as you held onto me I held on as tightly as you held onto me And, I built a home For you For me

25. Speak by Ben Abraham

I didn’t hear you enter But I know you have been circling my room I listen for your footsteps Close my eyes and wait for you to move You’re hiding like a memory Teasing like a girl I used to know Tumbling and gamboling Calling to the weakness in my soul

Telling me to speak In one reckless moment You move a little too close to my ears I grab a hold with both hands And scramble to make sense of what I hear I try to tie you down With synonyms and sad piano sounds For a moment you surrender One moment we both stand on the same ground

And I begin to speak I begin to say something And all at once you pull away I’m lost within your atmosphere As quickly as you found me I panic as you try to disappear

I reach out with my fingers And try to pull the letters back in line But your words spin out of order And the pounding in my chest is out of time But I just want to speak I just want to say something I just want to speak I just want to say something Can anybody hear me?

26. Promise by Ben Howard

And meet me there, bundles of flowers We wait through the hours of cold Winter shall howl at the walls Tearing down doors of time Shelter as we go And promise me this You’ll wait for me only Scared of the lonely arms Surface, far below these burn And maybe, just maybe I’ll come home Who am I, darling to you? Who am I? Going to tell you stories of mine Who am I? Who am I, darling for you? Who am I? Could be a burden in time, lonely Who am I, to you? Who am I, darling for you? Who am I? Going to be a burden Who am I, darling to you? Who am I?

27. Be My Wife by David Bowie

Sometimes you get so lonely Sometimes you get nowhere I’ve lived all over the world I’ve left every place Please be mine Share my life Stay with me Be my wife Sometimes you get so lonely Sometimes you get nowhere I’ve lived all over the world I’ve left every place Please be mine Share my life Stay with me Be my wife

28. Forever and a Year by Rufus Wainwright

Say, I may be gone today I may be going tomorrow But do not fear My darling now I’m here What are you saying pray What are you trying to tell me You will stay here Forever and a year Say, can you see them there Those darkened clouds in the distance So close to you We ought to go my dear What are you saying pray There’s only bright skies about us Just look away Just turn the other way A drop of rain I swear I felt upon my forehead Why is it now I cannot wipe my brow Twas not a drop of rain And now your hands, I am holding It was a tear Forever and a year Forever and a year Forever and a year

29. Songbird by Eva Cassidy

For you there’ll be no crying For you the sun will be shining ‘Cause I feel that when I’m with you It’s all right, I know it’s right

And the songbirds keep singing Like they know the score And I love you, I love you, I love you Like never before

To you I would give the world To you I’d never be cold ‘Cause I feel that when I’m with you It’s all right, I know it’s right

And the songbirds keep singing Like they know the score And I love you, I love you, I love you Like never before, like never before

Like never before

30. Nothing Else Matters by Metallica

So close, no matter how far Couldn’t be much more from the heart Forever trust in who we are And nothing else matters Never opened myself this way Life is ours, we live it our way All these words, I don’t just say And nothing else matters Trust I seek and I find in you Every day for us something new Open mind for a different view And nothing else matters Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know And I know So close, no matter how far Couldn’t be much more from the heart Forever trusting who we are And nothing else matters Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know And I know, yeah I never opened myself this way Life is ours, we live it our way All these words, I don’t just say And nothing else matters Trust I seek and I find in you Every day for us something new Open mind for a different view And nothing else matters Never cared for what they say Never cared for games they play Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know And I know, ooh, yeah So close, no matter how far Couldn’t be much more from the heart Forever trust in who we are No, nothing else matters

Music to Introduce Your Wedding Speeches

The wedding is all about the two of you, but the speeches give some exposure to other people who have played a huge role in your wedding day preparations.

You’ll need just the right music to introduce wedding speeches—so that your guests will know when the speeches are beginning, and possibly to help your speakers know when to stop!

Even though the people who stand up and speak at your reception are keeping the focus on you, it highlights people from each side of the family so your guests can get to know the key players in your lives. For example, the groom’s Great Uncle Poindexter most likely has no knowledge about the bride’s sister who is also, today, the maid of honour.

Wedding speeches also give the parents—usually just the fathers—who have opened not just their hearts but their wallets for this wonderful event. Even if you’ve paid for the wedding entirely yourselves, it’s traditional for elder males on both sides of the family to stand up and say something.

Wedding speeches are generally humorous and whimsical.

The music you choose to introduce them should be fun and sharp—a cue to let people know that something of note is about to take place. If one of your speechmakers gets stuck, not knowing how to wind down the speech, some well-placed laughter and the music reprising will give the speaker an easy way to wind things up.

Similarly, if someone has had a little too much to drink before the speeches, or if Uncle Herbert is tossed and he just decides he should stand up and put in his two cents’ worth, wedding speech music can be a harmless way to signal the end before things get calamitous.

Your wedding DJ will know how to handle such situations.

Few people have the creativity to come up a video in lieu of the speech as the two brothers did in the popular September 2013 wedding speech video that’s gone viral.

They were afraid they would break down giving speeches, and they made a hilarious video instead, which you can view here .

Assuming you want to keep things more traditional, consider these musical selections (Along with our mega list at the top of the page) as your intro and possibly your wrap-up to speech time:

•    For a suave and dapper best man or father of the bride (or groom), get them started with the theme for James Bond. And just in case you need to cut off somebody who’s too long-winded or inappropriate, use the rousing Goldfinger.

•    To introduce the same people but with a little more humour, have the DJ play the theme from Austin Powers.

•    The theme from Peter Gunn won an Emmy and a pair of Grammy awards for its composer, Henry Mancini. Even if people don’t know the name of this song, from a television show that ended in 1961, they will certainly know the tune. You can have the DJ wrap up the speeches with the Blues Brothers version of this theme song.

•    What could be more appropriate than the theme song from the Newlywed Game television show?

•    If the bride and groom go nuts over football—weddings have been planned around football schedules—use the NFL theme song. Wrap it up if you need to get the best man to sit down with the theme from Cops—Bad Boys.

•    When it’s time for the maid of honour to say her piece, introduce her with the theme from Sex and the City.

•    The opening bars from Flashdance  make another great intro for the maid of honour.

•    Your wedding has not been Mission Impossible, but it still makes good wedding speech music to get people’s attention.

•    Whether the groom stands up to speak varies from wedding to wedding, but if it’s on your agenda, the wedding DJ can introduce him with the theme from Rocky.

Songs that most of your wedding guests will recognise or at least understand the meaning of is the key to a great choice!

People have spent most of the past year talking about McFly musician Tom Fletcher’s song in lieu of a wedding speech.

While it’s fun to watch and gets top marks for creativity and originality, don’t make the mistake of singing your speech unless you do what Fletcher does—sing for a living.

Most people will just be happy to see the key players in the wedding party stand up to say a few words and thank the people who put their time and money into it.

Don’t be shy about indulging your hobbies, however. For someone who loves superhero movies, you can incorporate theme songs from Spiderman, Superman, or any of the caped wonders. Cartoon lovers can find plenty of ideas by searching for cartoon theme songs on Amazon.

Your wedding DJ will be happy to help you find just the right music to introduce your wedding speeches.

The wedding speeches, that part between the beautiful moment when the couple are wed and when everyone gets on the dance floor. For those who are close to the bride and groom, this can be a truly heart-warming moment filled with gushing praises of love. For the majority of us, although we would never admit it, this can be considered the boring part of the day with bad jokes and long, boring poems.

However, over the past decade something magical has happened. Thanks to the internet there is now fierce competition to make sure that every newlywed has a wedding speech which is the funniest and most entertaining of all. The pressure is on but these guys have tossed the slow speeches and opted instead for dance acts, rap songs, flash mobs and even dancing waiters. What kind of wedding would it be if it doesn't get over 500,000 views on YouTube anyway?

All newlyweds are nervous on their big day but when the responses from the guests are this memorable, you know you might just have landed the title of The Wedding of the Century.

15 Tom Fletcher Performs A Private Gig

McFly frontman, Tom Fletcher, married his long-term girlfriend, Giovanna Falcone, in 2012. The rocker announces that he can't cope with public speaking so when the big moment calls for his speech, the 30-year-old blasts out an acoustic revamp of one of his own songs,  It's All About You.  The rendition is a big thank you to his friends and family, a complete crowd pleaser which is as catchy as it is charming. With over 16 million hits on YouTube.

14 A Comedian Serenades His New Wife

They say it's best to find a life partner with a sense of humour and judging by this surprise performance from British comic, Bryan Lacey, his new wife has done just that. Picking up an acoustic guitar he bursts into a song that has the whole wedding party laughing alongside him. He wows his guests with genius lyrics such as: "We should have another holiday/ but everybody says that three holidays a year is greedy/ but they've never seen you in a bikini". This guy has some hilarious songwriting talent.

13  Daniel Buccheri Surprises His Brother

Singer and self-proclaimed "Best Best Man", Daniel Buccheri, bought home three million views when he uploaded his best man's speech. Serenading the bride and groom with his very own take on Sam Smith's  Stay With Me  then breaking out into an upbeat comedic performance really is pure gold. It was his own brother's wedding and the kind of effort every best man should be making.

12 Surprise Let It Go Performance

If there was an award for the most hilarious remix of  Frozen's Let It Go  then this maid of honour should take home the trophy. The bride, known as Amy, laughs as her sister complains that since she is now married they won't have much sister-time anymore. Her own mother joins in during the chorus begging her daughters to just let each other go. Despite being terribly off-key, this funny sibling makes up for it with her cuteness factor.

11 Father Of The Bride Kills It With His Dancing

Your typical father of the bride speech is either a warning that the groom better look after his daughter or just a series of terrible Dad jokes. As he takes to the stage, the father of the bride looks around for a drink and drags over the nearest waiter he can find. A very awkward beginning exchange soon becomes a duet that even top comics would be proud to pull off.

10 Don't Stop Believing

There's something about the intro and lyrics of Journey's  Don't Stop Believing  that can instantly make everyone feel delighted. What starts off as a wedding speech turns into an amusing, choreographed routine by the bride and her bridesmaids. Performing in front of a very surprised groom, the group manage to pull off the dance and eventually all the guests begin to join in on the fun. Well, it sure beats a regular first dance any day.

9 Bride Shares A Breathtaking Moment

Every girl dreams of her big day, it's your special moment to show off how truly beautiful you are and impress your new husband. Bride, Meg Stankevich, put together a huge surprise for her man after she serenaded him with  At Last  by Etta James. The love she captured with the song is enough to bring a tear to anyone's eye, especially as this song has some really tough notes to nail.

8 Wedding Guests Get Their Groove On

Isn't it just great when you get the whole gang together? What begins as quite a mundane best man speech soon turns into an epic choreographed routine with the bridal party and groomsmen when the music starts up. Performing to Walk The Moon's epic hit  Shut Up and Dance  they get the crowd clapping along and then eventually everyone joins in. Like a true wave of happiness this is one moment the wedding party won't be forgetting anytime soon.

7 It's Britney Time...

Sometimes you can take one look at a best man and know exactly why he was chosen for the job. Choreographer, Chris Downey helped Bradley Bredeweg surprise his best friend, Stephanie Huntington, on her wedding day with a Britney Spears-style performance. In his opening speech he mentions how the two of them have been huge fans of Britney and just before he gives her away as a new bride, they have one last moment of silly fun together.

6 Chelsey Steals The Show

Chelsey Hill went from maid of honour to stand-up comedy sensation overnight. Stepping up to make her speech at her sister Katie's wedding to Jeff Vogrin she has the whole crowd on her side from her opening line. Grabbing the mic she announces that she hates public speaking but she quips, "Katie told me if I do a good job tonight then I can do it again at her next wedding". With the crowd all hyped up, Chesley delivers seven minutes of hilarious musical brilliance.

5 (Pitch) Perfect Moment

It's not a proper party unless a flash mob appears from nowhere. When the maid of honour starts acting awkward the bride looks confused. Then the party discovers they have put together a  Pitch Perfect performance to blow the guests away. Far from a polished performance, it's the fact that these girls look as if they just rehearsed in a parking lot outside that makes it all the more entertaining.

4 The Hallstone Rap

Best Man, Steven Hallstone, decided that he would surprise his brother, Adam with his unique version of  Down  by Jay Sean. With bride, Laura Doak, also by his side he begins rapping - badly - reminding her to the beat that she is now a Hallstone for life. What Steven lacks in musical talent he makes up for in creativity with this humorous routine. We absolutely love this one.

3 Maid Of Honour Drops The Beat

Here is another contender in the worst- yet-most-charming rapper competition. Maid of honor, Kelly Farace, rewrites the rap of Vanilla Ice's hit  Ice Ice Baby. She raps: "Now that the party is pumping, with drinks in the air and lot's of first pumping". All the guests are clearly loving it. She also mentions in her number about the open bar, so either at the end of the video there is a standing ovation or just a rush to be the first in the queue for a drink.

2 Sisters Storm The World With Their Performance

It's not a real honeymoon unless you go viral when you are away. At least thats what Caitlin Hallerman and her groom, Johnny, discovered after their bridesmaids performed this epic routine. Caitlin's sisters, Kelsey and Maddie Hallerman, can not sing and they certainly can not dance - but they sure can write a viral hit. They remixed together Tracy Chapman's Give Me One Reason,  Jackson 5's I Want You Back , Backstreet Boys' Everybody and Michael Jackson's Black or White . You just have to watch the video once to understand why everyone loves it.

1 The Hooded Bridesmaid

Can the realest bridesmaid of all please stand up, please stand up. Just when you begin to think you have seen it all, singer Jennifer Gabrielli blows the world away with a rap that secured her 6 million viral views on YouTube. Appearances are not to be believed as Jennifer begins her speech looking sweet and innocent, but then when Eminem's The Real Slim Shady starts up she's ready for it. Watching the video you can sing along to this epic rap with Jennifer's lyrics which are: "Well this looks like it's meant to be/ so everybody please toast with me/ raise your glasses if you're thirsty / It's the wedding of the century".

The 100 Most Requested Wedding Reception Songs

Did any of your favorites make the list?

best wedding speech song

However which way you’re envisioning music for your wedding reception —and we’re talking about four to five hours of music, which is around 80 to 100 songs if you’ve booked a DJ or 50-to-60+ songs with a live band—there's a huge amount of collaboration that goes into the planning stages.  The beautiful thing about your wedding reception music is that it can be a little bit of everything: You’re welcome to skip around between a lot of genres and decades and styles that you both love.

“I always say that the wedding playlist is the soundtrack to the couple's love story. Couples should consider adding more songs that resonate with who they are,” says Keanna O’Quinn of Sonic Sommelier. “Any song that reminds them of why they love each other is a good place to start and incorporating songs that are tied to memories they have with loved ones is also super important. The music should be a culmination of songs that are linked to the best moments of their lives.” Whether you’re working with a band , a few musicians, or a DJ, after a couple of discussions everyone will have a crystal clear understanding of the overall roadmap for the day—including any asks for key moments during your wedding reception, such as first dance songs or must-play dance floor anthems. But at some point, you also have to trust the talent you’ve booked to read the room and make magic happen.

Meet the Expert

  • Keanna O’Quinn is the founder of Sonic Sommelier. Her flagship band, Honey+Vinyl , has more than a decade of experience in the luxury events and wedding industry.
  • Lea Palmieri is a Spotify Trend Expert and podcast host. For more inspiration from Spotify, check out the curated Wedding Songs and Wedding Party playlists.
  • Andrea Smith is the founder of The Band Method , a New York City-based musician collective that caters to weddings and private events.
  • Since Dart Collective was founded in 2013, the Austin, Texas-based Dart family of bands, DJs, and musicians have set the soundtrack for hundreds of events and weddings. Chris Bryne, COO, and Ruby Zuckerman, Event Producer, collaborated with Brides for this article.
  • Jacqueline Vizcaino is the founder of Tinted Event Design, Production, and Planning in Atlanta, Georgia, which specializes in wedding celebrations.

“For key-moment song decisions, we tap into the couple’s personality and energy to try to get to know them a bit better,” says Andrea Smith, founder of The Band Method . For the overall set list, Smith looks for a little more creative freedom. Couples draft a list of favorites, based on Smith’s song lists, as well as their “do not play” list. After that, it’s in the band’s hands.

Before you hand your musical talent the keys, so to speak, take a deep dive into this wedding reception playlist inspiration, which ranges from gold-standard classics to more modern dance classics, and plenty of fresh takes. Just remember: This is your celebration. If the newlyweds are happy, it's guaranteed that everyone will have a good time.

“I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” Whitney Houston (1987)

There's a reason why Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ is the number one song added to user-generated wedding playlists on Spotify, says Lea Palmieri, Spotify trend expert and podcast host. “We've all sung our hearts out to that one on the dance floor .”

“It never fails—it’s a feel-good song that is literally about dancing with the people you love,” say Chris Bryne and Ruby Zuckerman of Dart Collective.

“September,” Earth, Wind & Fire (1978)

Dart Collective describes this ‘70s disco hit as a “bulletproof classic'' for the dance floor.

Lyrics of Love: “Say, do you remember? / Dancin’ in September / Never was a cloudy day…”

“Respect,” Aretha Franklin (1967)

It didn’t take Jennifer Hudson starring as Ms. Franklin in the 2021 biopic to elevate this Motown classic; “Respect” commands a dance floor every time.

“Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” Stevie Wonder (1977)

Songs by this Motown icon are always a good idea. A great opening, recognizable hook, and cross-generational appeal place this Stevie classic towards the top of Dart Collective’s requests.

“Higher Ground,” Stevie Wonder (1973)

“It’s a classic that mature guests can vibe to, but it is so musically funky that younger guests can't help but jam out too,” says O’Quinn.

“Sir Duke,” Stevie Wonder (1976)

Talk about unleashing the horns. “Sir Duke” is yet another Stevie classic that plays beautifully for any specific celebration moments, as well as a general call to action to get moving towards the dance floor.

“Dancing Queen,” Abba (1976)

You know the song. If the two of you vibe with this Euro-disco pop hit—you already know it will be a dance floor favorite.

“Let’s Dance,” David Bowie (1983)

Who can resist this call to action from Bowie himself, whose timeless cool has plenty of cross-generation cache?

“December, 1963 (Oh What a Night),” Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons (1974)

Another 70’s hit with a funky bass line, this is a classic that feels properly vintage, not outdated. “With ‘Shout' becoming less and less popular, this song gives that old-school vibe that couples are looking for,” adds Smith.

“Sweet Caroline,” Neil Diamond (1969)

The crescendo of “Sweet Caroline” should be reason enough to jog your memory; the sing-along charm of this ballad positions it among wedding reception classics.

“Dreams,” Fleetwood Mac (1977)

If somehow you don’t know Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” or Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” (next on this epic list) from the first notes, it might be time to rediscover a couple of moments of musical greatness. Tingles on the spine all but guaranteed.

“Jolene,” Dolly Parton (1974)

One of the great ballads of the 20th century, “Jolene” is a classic Dolly sing-along with high-tempo energy that’s bound to bring out the songstress in at least one of your wedding guests.

“Tell Me Something Good,” Rufus, Chaka Khan (1974)

Fantastic vocals, bass guitar will no doubt channel music-inclined wedding guests onto the dance floor. This classic took home the award for “Best R&B Performance by Duo a Group With Vocals” at the Grammy Awards.

“Move On Up,” Curtis Mayfield (1970)

Talk about an anthem. Drop this classic disco-soul track onto your reception playlist and dancing’s bound to ensue.

“(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher,” Jackie Wilson (1967)

This song works beautifully as a couple’s dance song as well as for a dance song to engage the entire dance floor.

“Feelin’ Alright,” Joe Cocker (1969)

A sing-along song for family members of a certain era—and perhaps you love the song, too—this early ‘70s hit has been tapped for more than a few TV/motion picture soundtracks and deserves recognition in its own right. “Feelin’ Alright” could certainly be a closeout song of the night.

“Modern Love,” David Bowie (1983)

From the opening guitar riffs straight through til Bowie sings “Modern love / modern love / modern love” for the nth time—with only a few references about getting to the church on time somewhere in between—this song’s upbeat tempo, big brass, jamming piano, all add up to a dance floor hit.

“You Make My Dreams (Come True),” Hall & Oates (1980)

An uptempo early 80s classic from the band that is best known today for its yacht rock hits, this gold standard ranks among Dart Collective’s most requested reception songs—often used for reception entrances—and also appears on Spotify’s curated Wedding Songs playlist.

“Kiss,” Prince (1986)

What’s not to love about this infectious, funky sing-along from Purple One? Bryne and Zuckerman describe “Kiss” as “a fun party-starter.”

Lyrics of Love: “You don't have to be rich to be my girl / You don't have to be cool to rule my world / Ain’t no particular sign I'm more compatible with / I just want your extra time and your kiss.”

“You Can Call Me Al,” Paul Simon (1986)

Big horn sections, a major bass guitar riff, Paul Simons’ iconic style all add up to a catchy little ditty that ranks among the songs most often saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify.

Lyrics of Love: “If you'll be my bodyguard / I can be your long lost pal / I can call you Betty / And Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al.”

“Once in a Lifetime,” Talking Heads (1980)

Led by frontman David Byrne, the New Wave 80s band Talking Heads has more than a few hits still in circulation including this gem (perhaps more wedding-appropriate than “Psycho Killer”) that ranks among the songs most often saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify.

“Come and Get Your Love,” Redbone (1973)

One of the classic songs of the 70s—which you might recall from a certain scene with Chris Pratt early in the first Guardians of the Galaxy— the song’s call-and-response lyrics, sing-along chorus (there are a lot of opportunities to “come and get your love”), and overall groovy vibe make it a fun choice for a wedding reception playlist.

"Time After Time,” Cyndi Lauper (1984)

You know how this one goes: “If you’re lost you can look and you will find me / Time after time / If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting / Time after time.” This ’80s soft rock hit works equally well as a softer-tempo sing-along/group dance type song, plus any guests who want to couple up can sway together more intimately, too.

“Rock Lobster,” The B-52’s (1978)

Really, when else do you have the chance to join in a full-on undersea adventure dance quest with your friends and fam of all ages? This time capsule treasure is easily one of the best group dance songs of all time—bonus points for teaching the young ones some of the classic “Rock Lobster” moves.

“Golden Years,” David Bowie

Another Bowie classic that’s as good as gold, pun intended. Bonus points for the funky bass line, which is highly danceable.

Lyrics of Love: “I’ll stick with you baby, for a thousand years / Nothing’s gonna touch you in these golden years.”

“Cha Cha Slide (Original Live Platinum Band Mix),” DJ Casper

This song’s brilliance is in its simplicity. It’s engaging, interactive, and easy enough that guests of all ages (kids, too) can follow the moves. Plus, it’s just fun!

“Lean On Me,” Bill Withers (1972)

“Just call on me brother when you need a hand / We all need somebody to lean on”—this ’70s sing-along leaves a lasting impression, which is why it makes for a great final song of the night. Grab your loved ones by the arm and sing it loud.

“Crazy in Love (feat. Jay-Z),” Beyoncé

“It’s always a crowd pleaser,” says O’Quinn. “The horns at the top of the song signal a ‘call to action’ and it's impossible to not dance.”

Lyrics of Love: “Looking so crazy, your love’s / Got me looking, got me looking so crazy in love.”

“We Found Love,” Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris

In this dance party hit from the 2010s, Rihanna’s soaring vocals and Calvin Harris’ beats come together for this infectious sing-along that’s perfect for post-dinner high-energy dance sets.

“Moves Like Jagger,” Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera

There likely isn’t a wedding guest who doesn’t wish they had “moo-oo-oo-ooves like Jagger.” Tempt them onto the dance floor to show off the moves the do have; this is another song with broad guest appeal.

“Happy,” Pharrell Williams

Another all-ages-appropriate dance-floor pleaser, Pharrell’s chart-topping hit from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack landed him a Grammy for Best Solo Pop Performance in 2014. Go ahead, “clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth/clap along if you know what happiness is to you.” “‘Happy’ simply put everyone in a good mood,” says Jacqueline Vizcaino of Atlanta-based Tinted Events.

“Party in the U.S.A.,” Miley Cyrus

What’s a wedding reception dance party without a little Miley? This sing-along hit will have guests “noddin' [their] heads like, yeah, movin’ [their] hips like yeah,” which is why it ranks among the songs most often saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify.

“Shape of You,” Ed Sheeran

Before he even starts singing, Sheeran’s pop hit inspires the urge to dance. “This is a catchy song that will have guests singing along with the lyrics,” says Vizcaino.

“Shake It Off,” Taylor Swift

This Swift classic is a great group dance floor song—especially if everyone can sing along.

Lyrics of Love: “‘Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play / And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate / Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake / Shake it off, I shake it off.”

“Rolling in the Deep,” Adele

From her Grammy Award-winning Record of the Year, this high-octane ballad by Adele is moody in all the right ways. Count on more than a few sing-along lines, and plenty of foot-tapping beats.

“You’ve Got the Love,” Florence + The Machine

While on the subject of powerful vocals, this indie-pop hit from the late aughts is a testament to love in all the IRL ways.

Lyrics of Love: “Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air / I know I can count on you / Sometimes I feel like saying ‘Lord I just don't care’ / But you've got the love I need to see me through /…”

“Beautiful,” Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell Williams and Charlie Wilson

Sing along now: “Beautiful, I just want you to know / You're my favorite girl.” This early aughts collab between the D-o-double–g and a young Pharrell is a super bouncy track and fun to dance to—don’t you think so, baby boo?

“Can’t Hold Us (feat. Ray Dalton),” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

This high-energy track from hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is a party anthem from the early 2010s that’s guaranteed to have traction on the dance floor—it's best suited for later in the evening, when your reception’s transitioned to full-on dance party mode.

Lyrics of Love: “Raise those hands, this is our party / We came here to live life like nobody was watching / … So we put our hands up like the ceiling can't hold us.”

“Mr. Brightside,” The Killers

“It started out with a kiss / How did it end up like this?” An early aughts hit from indie-rock band The Killers, this track is guaranteed to get some traction on the dance floor. “This song speaks to several generations, plus, it's fun to jump around to,” says Smith.

“Ho Hey,” The Lumineers

With the catchy interlude of “I belong with you, you belong with me / You’re my sweet,” this hit from the Colorado-based alt-folk band The Lumineers found its way into the larger pop culture zeitgeist. More chill than energetic, it’s a great group sing-along on the dance floor nonetheless—everyone’s gotta catch their breath sometime!

Home,” Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

One of the sweetest duets in recent memory, the banter between frontman Edward Sharpe and his wife Jade in this indie hit from 2009 is pure joy. The song’s vibe is great for dancing all together as one big happy family, too.

“Cosmic Girl,” Jamiroquai

What’s not to love about Jamiroquai’s funky, uptempo, electro-pop hit?

Lyrics of Love: “She’s just a cosmic girl / From another galaxy / My heart’s at zero gravity / She’s from a cosmic world / Putting me in ecstasy / Transmitting my frequency / She’s cosmic.”

“Hey Ya!,” Outcast

Because sometimes you just have to “shake it, shake it, shake it like a Polaroid picture”—this seminal Outcast track has inspired dance-floor moves for decades now, and really, it only gets better with time.

“Valerie (feat. Amy Winehouse),” Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse

One of the songs most often saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify, Ms. Winehouse shows off her full range of vocals in this soulful sing-along.

“Pony,” Ginuwine

Ask your DJ to cue this one up when it’s time to really break out the dance moves. “Pony” is a great turning-point track to pivot to late night dance music, according to Dart Collective.

“In My Mind," Dyrono & Gigi D'Agostino

Whether or not your dance-happy guests recognize this slightly more down-tempo electro-pop hit from the first notes, they'll all be singing along by the time the catchy chorus repeats for the last time. It's a great song to drop in towards the wind-down of a reception's high-energy dance party set.

Lyrics of Love: “In my mind, in my head / This is where we all came from / The dreams we have, the love we share / This is what we're waiting for.”

“I Gotta Feeling,” Black Eyed Peas

Lyrics of Love: “I got a feeling / That tonight’s going to be a good night / That tonight’s going to be a good good night.” This anthem from the early aughts is instantly recognizable, infectious, and will absolutely energize the dance floor, because, “Tonight’s the night, let’s live it up / …Let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it.”

“Can’t Stop the Feeling,” Justin Timberlake

It’s all but impossible to resist this highly infectious dance track, which Vizcaino describes as “irresistibly catchy” and “a song that always has guests singing along.”

Lyrics of Love: “I got this feeling inside my bones / It goes electric, wavy when I turn it on / And if you want it, inside your soul / Just open up your heart, let music take control.”

“SexyBack,” Justin Timberlake feat. Timbaland

With will over a half billion plays on Spotify, it’s clear that JT and Timbaland’s early aughts hit is all sorts of popular. Save this one for a late-night dance floor rally (or the after-party).

“One More Time,” Daft Punk

Send your dance party besties out into the evening on a high note (or in the direction of the afterparty) with this classic from French dance-pop duo Daft Punk, which is a perfect final anthem: “One more time, we’re going to celebrate / Oh yeah, alright, don’t stop the dancing.”

“Something Just Like This,” The Chainsmokers & Coldplay

In this EDM-pop hit collab that’s as dance-worthy as it is endearing, Chris Martin sings: “I’m not looking for somebody / With some superhuman gifts / Some superhero / Some fairytale bliss / Just something I can turn to / Somebody I can kiss / I want something just like this.”

“Closer,” The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey

This catchy duet is a great add to the reception playlist as it’s plenty recognizable, has a great beat, and mixes well with high-energy dance party songs without quite as uptempo. (It’s good to mix up the pace of the songs, even later in the night.)

Lyrics of Love: “So, baby, pull me closer / In the back seat of your Rover / …We ain’t ever getting older.”

One Kiss (with Dua Lipa),” Calvin Harris

A massive summer hit in Europe, this 2018 dance-pop hit was made for the dance floor.

Lyrics of Love: “One kiss is all it takes / Fallin’ in love with me / The possibilities.”

“Shut Up and Dance,” Walk The Moon

Sometimes, less is more—especially when it’s time to hit the dance floor. This 2014 hit from the album “Talking Is Hard,” which is a popular song saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify, just about sums it up. “It’s such an upbeat track that will have everyone on the dance floor,” says Vizcaino.

“D.A.N.C.E.,” Justice

Spell it out now: “Do the D-A-N-C-E / One, two, three, four, fight / Stick ready to the B-E-A-T / Get ready to ignite.” This pop hit has been played on Spotify more than 90 million times and is a no-brainer add to a wedding playlist as it’s just so fun and dance-worthy.

“Break My Soul,” Beyoncé (2022)

A fresh track from Queen Bey’s latest album, the chart-topping song pays homage to old school House music beats while still being a massive radio hit, and a popular playlist ask at Dart Collective.

“About Damn Time,” Lizzo (2022)

Lizzo’s smash hit has been a hugely popular request for wedding receptions, too. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek reference to how long you’ve been waiting for this day!” say Bryne and Zuckerman.

“Cold Heart” (PNAU Remix), Elton John and Dua Lipa (2021)

The PNAU Remix gives a bouncy dance beat to this Elton John/Dua Lipa mash-up that weaves together recognizable stylings from two musical eras at once. “Who doesn't love Elton John? A little old and new mixed together is really fun,” says Smith.

“Blinding Lights,” The Weeknd (2020)

“This is one of the songs that has dominated playlists and wedding party entrances this year with their empowering lyrics and upbeat vibes,” says Vizcaino.

“Levitating,” Dua Lipa (2020)

“This hit has super high energy and it’s definitely in the zeitgeist currently,” say Bryne and Zuckerman.

Lyrics of Love: “I believe that you’re for me / I feel it in our energy / I see us written in the stars / We can go whenever, so let’s do it now or never, baby.”

“Kiss Me More,” Doja Cat (2021) feat. SZA

Dart Collective describes this Grammy Award-winning duet  as “super bouncy, danceable, and “a fun sing-along as a duet”—all three great attributes for songs for your reception playlist.

Lyrics of Love: “We hug and yes, we make love / And always say ‘Goodnight’ / And we cuddle, sure, I do love it / But I need your lips on mine / Can you kiss me more?”

“Big Energy,” Latto (2021)

NSFW language aside (perhaps you can ask your DJ to find a radio edit version), Vizcaino has fielded tons of requests for this Latto hit, which was nominated for a Grammy and took home the BET Hip Hop Award for “Best Song of the Year.” “‘Big Energy’ has dominated reception playlists and wedding party entrances this year,” she says.

“Juice,” Lizzo (2019)

This pop hit from Lizzo is exactly the sort of fresh hit that you want to drop onto your reception playlist for an excuse to dance with all your besties.

Lyrics of Love: “Mirror, mirror on the wall / Don’t say it, ’cause I know I’m cute (ooh, baby) / …That’s how I roll.”

“Higher Love,” Kygo & Whitney Houston (2019)

With the blessing of Whitney Houston’s estate, which is managed by her family, Norwegian DJ Kygo samples the late great songstress’ cover of Steve Winwood’s 80’s hit (that was originally recorded in the early Nineties) to create this fresh rendition of “Higher Love” that became a number one hit in its own right.

“Gimme Gimme—Club Mix,” Lee Cabrera, Kevin McKay, Bleech, remixing ABBA

Thanks to the popularity of this year’s ABBA TikTok Challenge, this remixed classic is making its way onto dance floor request lists. “This was the summer European hit remix version that was played all over,” says Smith.

“Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” Kate Hill

The 80s track is back in the zeitgeist, thanks to its recent placement in “Stranger Things” — it was named the Top Song of Summer 2022 in the U.S. and second most-listened song on the platform globally, and it’s making its way onto wedding playlists and reception request lists.

“Love You Better,” Alex Preston (2021)

This upbeat single from the Sydney-based DJ and producer is a perfect dance song to throw into the mix later in the evening.

“Rasputin,” Boney M., Majestic Remix (2021)

You can thank TikTok for this hit, too. “TikTok videos have definitely made their way to weddings. People have seen these dances and want to have ‘a TikTok dance moment’ at their wedding reception,” says Smith.

“Havana (feat. Young Thug),” Camila Cabello (2018)

There’s an undercurrent of Latin vibes to this breakout hit single from Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello that’s incredibly danceable—think salsa dancing in the streets in Buenos Aires, or Cuba. It’s a fun one to partner-dance to without being formal.

“The Middle,” Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey (2018)

“This pop-dance song has an infectious beat and fun lyrics that will have everyone singing along,” says Vizcaino.

Lyrics of Love: : “Baby, why don’t you just meet me in the middle / I’m losing my mind just a little.”

“Let’s Stay Together,” Al Green

Motown tunes have a certain timeless appeal; this early ’70s hit from Al Green is never far from the zeitgeist, whether sampled for more recent songs or lending atmosphere to a Hollywood production (including, quite famously, Pulp Fiction ). It’s also among the songs most often saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify.

“How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” Marvin Gaye (original), also James Taylor (cover)

In both renditions—the Motown hit by Marvin Gaye, or the cover of the song by singer-songwriter James Taylor in the 1970s—this is one song that’s stood the test of time, and continues to be saved to wedding reception playlists on Spotify.

Lyrics of Love: “You brighten up for me all of my days / With a love so sweet in so many ways / I wanna stop and thank you, baby / I just wanna stop and thank you baby, oh yes / How sweet it is to be loved by you.”

“The Way You Look Tonight,” Frank Sinatra

Keep it classy with a couple’s dance by jazz standard Ole Blue Eyes that also appeared in a 30s film featuring a young Fred Astaire—a classic for the ages.

Lyrics of Love: “Lovely, don’t you ever change / Keep that breathless charm / …’Cause I love you / Just the way you look tonight.”

“Somewhere Beyond the Sea,” Bobby Darin

Everyone loves a love song that takes you on a journey lyrically, which is precisely what this vintage, jazzy gem accomplishes. It’s easy to dance to, as well, whether as a first dance song or somewhere in the repertoire for a couples’ dance with just the right amount of nostalgia.

“L-O-V-E,” Nat King Cole

The lyrics for this lovely jazz standard say it all: “‘L’ is for the way you look at me / ‘O’ is for the only one I see / ‘V’ is very, very extraordinary / ‘E’ is even more than anyone that you adore / Love is all I can give to you / Love is more than just a game for two / Two in love can make it / Take my heart and please don’t break it / Love was made for me and you.”

“I Only Have Eyes for You,” The Flamingos

The Flamingos’ smooth, doo-wop rendition of what’s easily one of the greatest love songs from the last century (Art Garfunkel also covered this hit in the 1970s) is pure reception magic.

Lyrics of Love: “My love must be a kind of blind love / I can’t see anyone but you / …The moon may be high / But I can’t see a think in the sky / I only have eyes for you.”

“Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World,” Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

A mashup of two well-known songs performed acoustically by Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and recorded on a whim, this lovely medley tugs at the heartstrings.

“Can't Help Falling in Love,” Elvis Presley

Innocuously tucked into the soundtrack for the 1961 Presley film “Blue Hawaii,” this love song for the ages is one of The King’s greatest legacies.

“You Send Me,” Sam Cooke

A gift of a song that lasts all of 2 minutes and 45 seconds, Cooke’s classic hit is a brilliant option for couples who might be a bit shy about being in the spotlight during a first dance; it’s also among the most requested songs at Dart Collective.

Lyrics of Love: “Darling, you send me / …Now I find myself wanting / To marry you and take you home (whoa-oh-oh-oh).”

“That's How Strong My Love Is,” Otis Redding

Redding takes to the cosmos to try to describe the enormity of his love in this soulful ’60s ballad: “If I was the sun way up there / I’d go with love most everywhere / I’ll be the moon when the sun goes down / Just to let you know that I'm still around / That’s how strong my love is.”

“The Best Is Yet to Come,” Frank Sinatra and Count Basie

The opening riffs to this Sinatra/Basie classic set the scene for just such a moment as this—the first dance you’ve been working on for weeks now, a la J-Law in Silver Linings Playbook .

“At Last,” Etta James

Sing it, Ms. James: “At last, my love has come along / My lonely days are over / And life is like a song.” Accompanied by sweeping orchestral music and Etta’s incredible vocals, your first dance is already perfection.

“This Will Be (An Everlasting Love),” Natalie Cole

“This song is such a heartwarming song that expresses love so beautifully,” says Smith.

Lyrics of Love: “Loving you, is some kind of wonderful / Because you show me, just how much you care / You’ve given me the thrill of a lifetime / And made me believe you’ve got more thrills to spare.”

“Your Song,” Elton John

This one’s a couple’s dance song for the ages; keep the footwork simple, or take a few artistic liberties—it’s your choice.

Lyrics of Love: “And you can tell everybody this is your song / It may be quite simple, but now that it’s done / I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words / How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.”

“Harvest Moon,” Neil Young

The tempo of this song is an easy one to dance to, while Neil Young’s honeyed vocals paint the picture of what it means to be in love for a lifetime—wedding goals, indeed.

“Perfect,” Ed Sheeran

With lyrics such as “When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful / I don't deserve this / Darling, you look perfect tonight,” Sheeran couldn’t have been more spot on describing a wedding day bride. This chart-topping hit is just about perfect itself, so long as the massive exposure isn’t a concern.

“Thinking Out Loud,” Ed Sheeran

Sheeran took home two Grammys for this swoon-worthy modern classic, including “Song of the Year” (2014) and “Best Pop Solo Performance,” and the hit continues to hold its reign. “ ‘Thinking out Loud’ and ‘Perfect’ remain some of the most-added tracks to user-generated first dance playlists for Gen Z and young Millennial fans on Spotify,” says Palmieri.

“Just the Way You Are,” Bruno Mars

Talk about an anthem we could all live for: “When I see your face / There's not a thing that I would change / ‘Cause you're amazing / Just the way you are / And when you smile / The whole world stops and stares for a while.”

“You Are The Best Thing,” Ray Lamontagne

A beautifully-composed song with plenty of gospel and blues underpinnings, Lamontagne croons “You are the best thing … that ever happened to me” no less than a couple of dozen times. Message delivered, loud and clear.

“Marry You,” Bruno Mars

This upbeat Bruno Mars track is no slow dance, but a popular choice nonetheless, with lyrics like, “Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you / Is it the look in your eyes or is it this dancing juice? / Who cares, baby, I think I wanna marry you.” “‘Marry You’ has become a classic wedding anthem with its upbeat and romantic lyrics,” says Vizcaino.

“Better Together,” Jack Johnson

Johnson’s acoustic singer-songwriter style is sweetly romantic in all the right ways, which in part is why this early aughts hit remains among the songs most saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify.

Lyrics of Love: “Love is the answer, at least for most of the questions in my heart / … I'll tell you one thing, it's always better when we're together.”

“First Day of My Life,” Bright Eyes

This melodic indie rock ballad from the early aughts is among the songs most saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify. Singer Conor Oberst croons, “Yours was the first face that I saw / I think I was blind before I met you / And I don't know where I am, I don't know where I've been / But I know where I want to go.”

“Lucky” Jason Mraz, feat. Colbie Caillat

This lovely duet from Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat took home a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2008, and continues to be among the songs most saved to wedding-related playlists on Spotify.

Lyrics of Love: “Lucky I'm in love with my best friend / Lucky to have been where I have been / Lucky to be coming home again / Lucky we're in love in every way.”

“All of Me,” John Legend

A lyrical love letter to his wife Chrissy Teigen , this Grammy Award-winning ballad is Legend at his finest. Have tissues at the ready, because your wedding guests will need them.

“You and Me,” Penny & the Quarters

There’s such a sweet innocence to this soulful track recorded in the late 1960s that only catapulted to fame after being featured on the soundtrack for the movie Blue Valentine (2010). It’s a popular first dance request for Dart Collective.

“Everywhere,” Fleetwood Mac

One of the most ethereal songs of the epic Fleetwood Mac catalog, with lovely, harmonized lyrics to match, this ’70s treasure is certainly having a moment. “This has to have been the most requested first dance song of 2022,” says Smith.

"Turn Your Lights Down Low," Bob Marley feat. Lauryn Hill

O’Quinn cites this Bob Marley remix featuring Lauryn Hill as one of her favorite first dance requests, and truly, it’s a beautiful rendition.

“Our Day Will Come,” Amy Winehouse

There’s plenty of rhythm to step to in this song from the late great Amy Winehouse, with vocals and lyrics to match: “Our day will come / And we'll have everything / We'll share the joy / Falling in love can bring / … Our dreams have magic because we'll always stay in love this way / Our day will come.”

“10,000 Hours,” Dan + Shay, Justin Bieber

This 2021 hit is a totally fresh take from the Biebs, whose collaboration with country-pop duo Dan + Shay took home a Grammy for “Best Country Duo/Group Performance.” Honeyed harmonies sail through lyrics such as: “I’d spend ten thousand hours and ten thousand more / If that’s what it takes to learn that sweet heart of yours / … If it’s ten thousand hours or the rest of my life / I’m gonna love you (ooh ohh ohh).”

“Moon River,” Frank Ocean

Lyrics of Love: “Two drifters off to see the world / There's such a crazy world to see / …Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' the same.” At Dart Collective, this dreamy, melodic R&B tune by Frank Ocean is a popular first dance request—sign us up.

What Are Good Songs for a Wedding Entrance

You're probably wondering how to pick the best song for a wedding entrance. Well, this has certainly been one of your life's most romantic moments, so Tony from Tony Winyard DJ and MC recommends picking a song that pays homage to your love story.

"I really encourage the couple to choose songs which have a special meaning to them; such as from a movie they both love, from a holiday or from their time at uni," he says, "Choosing a song that pulls on the heartstrings and brings a touch of sentimentality to your entrance could be the perfect option to tie your big day together"

Giving couples more options, Tony adds, "Alternatively, you could go for a crowd-pleaser to kickstart your festivities. The most popular options recently have been Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars, Happy by Pharrell Williams, and I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas. These tunes are sure to heighten the feel-good mood of your wedding reception and get your friends and family up on their feet."

How Long Should a Wedding Entrance Song Be?

This all depends on the order you want you and your party to enter. Some people choose to have their wedding party members go first, leading up to the couple. Alternatively, the moment can be savoured for just the newlyweds. Generally, your choice of wedding reception entrance songs should all be around the three-minute mark to allow for time to ensure everybody makes their entrance smoothly.

Jess, business owner and wedding planner of  Occasion Queens , highlights the need to pick a song that suits this timing. "At the end of the day, you want to make sure the song fits the pace of your bridal party and the distance they need to walk. So, pick a song that makes your entrance beautiful and seamless," she says.

How to Plan a Good Wedding Entrance

To ensure everything goes smoothly for your couple wedding entrance song, have your DJ or master of ceremonies gather the guests by the entrance, creating a welcoming line for you to walk through.  Then it's time to play your entrance song. Ensure your DJ knows how you want to be introduced. Are you taking each other's names or would you rather be referred to as 'the happy couple'?

Tony says, "I recommend to them to have something with a good beat which allows the guests to clap along to it as they enter the room."

You also need to think about what your guests will be doing while you enter. This is a fantastic moment to capture on camera, so you'll want to get the snap prepped. Having guests with streamers or party poppers to pop as you come in can look fantastic. Then all you have to do is w alk in hand and hand to one of your favourite entrance wedding songs and raise your hands as the crowd go wild!

Miranda Lambert

Randy travis, 23 biggest country music tours of 2024: here's how to get tickets to lainey wilson, shania twain….

Trending on Billboard

Though the use of AI has largely been viewed as a threat to artists and songwriters over the past few years, Country Music Hall of Famer Travis’s label team at Warner Music Nashville was intent on using the technology to aid the singer, who has had limited speech for more than a decade, following a 2013 stroke that left him with aphasia. This song, originally recorded by singer James Dupre and written by Scotty Emerick with John Scott Sherill, serves as a key vessel, one that feels every bit as classic as many of Travis’s previous hits. Through the help of AI and meticulous sonic editing from Travis’s longtime producer Kyle Lehning, Travis returns with “Where That Came From,” with his vocal sounding remarkably close to Travis’s timeless recordings in the 1980s and 1990s.

Tenille Arts, “So Do I”

Colby Acuff, “Scared of the Dark”

Acuff, who signed with Sony Music Nashville last year, excels in pairing acoustic-propelled sounds with his grainy voice and deeply personal storylines. His latest, which he wrote solo and produced with Eddie Spear, builds from pared-back fiddle and vocal into pounding percussion, razor-sharp fiddle lines and relentless acoustic guitar, drawing out the lyrical arc of an incessant mental health battle with depression and shame, but ultimately drawing out the hope for better days ahead.

Lonesome Ace Stringband with The Andrew Collins Trio, “May Day”

It’s been nearly two decades since the Lonesome Ace Stringband played a sound-refining residency at Toronto’s Dakota Tavern — roughly the same time that Lonesome Ace’s Chris Coole wrote this track with Andrew Collins of The Andrew Collins Trio. The two groups combine their talents on this breezy, exquisitely performed instrumental, with a mesh of mandolin, banjo, bass, guitar and fiddle that capture the warm, lively essence of springtime.

Kameron Marlowe, “On My Way Out”

Marlowe’s formidable vocals are front and center on his new song, written by Michael Hardy, Ben Johnson, Hunter Phelps, Taylor Phillips and Bobby Pinson. By turns soaring and tender, Marlowe’s voice is an ace foil for this song musing on how he wants to leave this life better than he found it, right his wrongs and give thanks for those who meant the most to him. A top-shelf outing from this North Carolina native and former The Voice contestant.

Chase Matthew, “First”

Jesse Daniel & Ben Haggard, “Tomorrow’s Good Ol’ Days”

Dripping with harmonica and winding guitar, this collaboration between Daniel and Ben Haggard (son of country music legend Merle Haggard) is the latest hard-hitting honky tonk release from neo-traditionalist Daniel. Here, they lament a country that is “on the brink of war,” kids who “are growin’ up too fast” and corporations buying up farmland and reshaping the economy in the process. Their weathered, craggy voices are a perfect foil for the storyline, in a throwback to other classic country compositions that have grieved over various economic and societal changes they have deemed damaging. The song is from Daniels’s upcoming project Countin’ the Miles , out June 7 on Lightning Rod Records.

Parents Identify Bodies of U.S., Australian Tourists Missing in Mexico

Reuters

Members of the United States and Australian embassies and the parents of missing U.S. and Australian tourists leave the Forensic Medical Service (Servicio Medico Forense) after the parents identified that the three bodies found earlier are their children's, in Ensenada, Mexico, May 5, 2024. By Raul Cortes and Lizbeth Diaz

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexican authorities on Sunday confirmed the American and two Australian tourists who went missing in northern Mexico last week are dead after their bodies were identified by parents.

The bodies of Australian brothers Callum, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, as well as American Carter Rhoad, 30, were found at the bottom of a well in Baja California state earlier this week after a days-long search.

The three foreigners went missing while on a vacation surfing near the popular tourist town of Ensenada, about 90 minutes south of the U.S.-Mexico border on the Pacific coast.

Baja California state Attorney General's Office said in a statement the confirmation was issued once the parents of the victims "were able to identify them, without the need of genetic tests".

State Attorney General Elena Andrade told the parents and diplomatic officials that there was "total institutional commitment to continue with the investigation of these unfortunate events until those responsible receive the full weight of the law", the statement added.

On Saturday, Andrade said that the bodies were found in an advanced state of decomposition at the bottom of a well more than 15 meters (50 ft) deep.

A source from the attorney general's office told Reuters that all three bodies had a shot in the head.

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers offered his condolences to the families of Callum and Jake and said the whole country mourned with them.

"We can only imagine what this ordeal has been like for them and for the loved ones of Callum and Jake," he said at a news conference.

"It has been an absolutely horrendous, absolutely horrific ordeal and our thoughts are with all of them today."

SHOT BY CAR THIEVES

Three people have so far been arrested, officials say. A burnt-out vehicle believed to have been used by the three surfers was also found in the area.

Mexican authorities' preliminary hypothesis is that the arrested individuals attempted to carjack the foreigners and when the surfers resisted they were shot and their bodies dumped in a well.

The three surfers were last seen on April 27 and reported missing a couple of days later, when authorities launched a multi-day search with the help from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Baja California is one of Mexico's most violent states, although the Ensenada area is considered safer. The U.S. State Department advises Americans to reconsider travel to the state due to crime and kidnapping.
