Good morning everyone, today I am going to share my views on the topic “Football”.

It is also called association football or soccer, is a game involving two teams of 11 players who try to maneuver the ball into the other team’s goal without using their hands or arms. The team that scores more goals wins.

It is not merely a sport but a powerful societal and cultural entity. Its influence is far-reaching, affecting various aspects of life, from economics and politics to mental health. It’s a testament to the power of a simple game to inspire, unite, and transform. It truly is ‘the beautiful game’.

Jimmy Valvano

Appearing at the first ESPY Awards on March 3, 1993, former North Carolina State basketball coach Jimmy Valvano gave an emotional and motivational speech while accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. Valvano was suffering from cancer at the time, announcing The V Foundation and urging everyone to laugh, think and cry everyday, words that also appeared on his tombstone after he lost his battle with cancer less than two months later.

Showing strength and optimism in the face of adversity, baseball legend Lou Gehrig gave the famous "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech during a New York Yankees game on July 4, 1939, which was also deemed Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day.

Only days earlier, the six-time World Series champion had retired from the game after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans... So I close in saying that I might have been given a bad break, but I've got an awful lot to live for. Thank you."

Herb Brooks

Speaking to his players prior to a game at the 1980 Winter Olympics, legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks inspired his squad to complete the impossible and beat the dominant Soviet team. They did just that, completing the "Miracle on Ice" and went on to win the gold medal.

Though the original speech was done in a private locker room, in the 2004 film Miracle , Kurt Russell recreated the speech.

"Great moments are born from great opportunity, and that's what you have here tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game; if we played them ten times, they might win nine. But not this game, not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight we stay with them, and we shut them down because we can. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players—every one of you, and you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it!"

Muhammad Ali

Prior to fighting George Foreman on October 30, 1974, Muhammad Ali read this poem as part of the build-up for the fight known as "The Rumble in the Jungle." Ali won the fight in the eighth round, pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the history of boxing.

Frail and in pain from nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the legendary baseball player Babe Ruth made one last appearance at Yankee Stadium for "Babe Ruth Day" on April 27, 1947, to give his farewell speech. The Bambino addressed the sell-out crowd of over 60,000 by reflecting on his journey to the big leagues and inspiring generations to follow in his footsteps.

"Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

You know how bad my voice sounds -- well it feels just as bad.

You know this baseball game of ours comes up from the youth. That means the boys.

Vince Lombardi

Easily considered one of the best National Football League coaches ever, the great Vince Lombardi gave this final speech to his players on the Green Bay Packers prior to Super Bowl II on January 14, 1968. Lombardi's team defeated the Oakland Raiders 33-14 to win their second-consecutive Super Bowl. His legacy was later honored with the Super Bowl trophy being renamed the Lombardi Trophy.

8 Inspirational Football Locker Room Speeches

The college football season starts on Saturday (okay, technically Thursday. But I’m saying Saturday because that’s when Oklahoma plays. Boomer Sooner!). I love football. It’s one of the manliest sports. For it is truly the sport closest to combat. Men strategize in their war room, don their armor, and line up against their opponent. Victory is measured in territory gained, in how well one unit outmaneuvers the other. The game involves brute strength and keen physicality; it is a hand to hand, helmet to helmet fight, one man struggling against another. And yet at the same time, finesse, agility, and brilliant strategy are requisites for success and a team lives or dies solely on how well they work together as a team, as a unit.

Playing football in high school helped shape me into the man I am today. As I struggled through another practice in 100 degree heat and sweated through two-a-day practices, I learned to work hard and not quit. I learned that pain is often the only pathway to excellence. At the end of the game, when the scoreboard’s numbers were not as I had wished, I learned how to bounce back from failure and dedicate myself to being better the next time around. I experienced the awesome power of a group of men, striving together for the same goal. The friendships I made while playing football will last a lifetime.

The lessons of all sports carry over from the actual arena to the playing field of life. Rich is the man who, if only for a short time, feels the glory his body in peak condition, the bond of brothers, the sweet joy of victory and the agony of defeat. While the memories of such a time fade as a man grows older, the wisdom he gleans from the experience will echo throughout his life.

So in honor of the opening of the football season, and the great lessons all men can learn from this great game, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most inspiring football locker room speeches from both film and real life. The speeches we chose are not only inspiring for men about to hit the field, they’re motivating for those men who wish to walk out the door each day to school or work, ready to take on the world. Success in football requires heart, pride, and teamwork. Success in life requires the same.

Friday Night Lights

If you played football in high school, you can’t help but think about the young men you played next to while watching this clip. Coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) explains to his players what “being perfect” really means. It’s not about the score at the end of the game. It’s about looking your teammate in the eye and being able to say you did all you could. I can’t help but get a little teary eyed when the players say the Lord’s Prayer. My team in high school did the same thing and it instantly transports me back to that locker room in Edmond, OK.

I Am a Champion

Through a series of manly affirmations, this coach pumps the hell out of his players. How can you not get psyched to take down the competition with lines like these:

“I will rip the heart out of my enemy and leave it bleeding on the ground because he cannot stop me.”

Any Given Sunday

Warning: Some adult language

Life, like football, is a game of inches. Coach Tony D’Amato (Al Pacino) captures that analogy perfectly in this speech. An inch can make the difference between victory or defeat. And if you want to succeed in football or life, you have to fight for every inch. Never take anything for granted. Always keep fighting, even when everything seems stacked against you.

Knute Rockne

We’re big fans of Knute Rockne. And how can you not be? As a player he revolutionized the game with the forward pass and as a coach he became almost unstoppable. This is an actual clip from Knute Rockne’s famous “Inside ’em and Outside ’em” speech. In this locker room pep talk, Knute rouses his players with his machine gun delivery and excited gestures. The speech was so popular back in the day that young men bought recordings of it by the thousands and listened to it over and over, getting pumped to charge onto the playing field of life.

Remember the Titans

Okay, so technically this isn’t a locker room speech, but it’s still inspiring. It’s 1971, and Coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) has the onerous task of bringing together a team of black and white high school students in Virginia. The team isn’t gelling. So, in a stroke of pure rhetorical genius, Coach Boone takes his men on a jog to Gettysburg. In a stirring and solemn bit of oratory, he teaches his men a little about football, and a lot about life.

What would you do if you knew that this day would be your last day? How would you live? If you’re like me, you’d go balls out to make it the best damn day of your life. This coach revs his players up telling them to to play each play as if it was their final one on the field. We can all take a cue from this. Approach what you do in life as if it would be the last time you do it. Kiss your wife like it would be the last time. Play with your kids like it would be the last time. You never know. That kiss and playtime could be your last.

Rudy, Fortune The Facilities Manager

Sometimes we need an honest mentor to give us some perspective on ourselves. Rudy (Sean Austin) spent two years trying to get on the dress team of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. When it didn’t happen, he decides to quit. Thankfully, facilities manager Fortune (Charles S. Dutton) knocks some sense into Rudy and tells him what’s what. Quitting will only bring regret, he tells him. You gotta stay in it, even when things get tough, even when the odds are against you.

Georgia Tech Pre-Game Speech, Derrick Moore, Georgia Tech Chaplin

It’s 2007, and Georgia Tech is in South Bend to take on the Irish in their house. They definitely need to get fired up. Luckily they have this guy, Derrick Moore, to light a fire under ’em. Moore is pure intensity. He’s the team chaplain (who knew that team’s had one?) and brings an evangelical fervor to his oratory. The best part of the speech is when he quotes the words of his middle school teacher:

“We’re going to fight until we can’t fight no more. Going to lie down and bleed awhile. Going to get up; fight some more.”

Amen, brother. That’s how you win. Tenacity.

This weekend, eight new members will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Every year at the enshrinement ceremony, the new inductees in attendance are slated to speak. And every year, most speeches begin the same way — they thank God, their family, the team owners, and fans. But after that, each induction speech is different from the next.

From goofy to heart-warming to tear-jerking, there are a number of great Hall of Fame induction speeches and moments. I picked the most memorable ones from the last 20 years, starting with my absolute favorite speech.

And the 2019 Hall of Fame class isn’t lacking in personality — including players like Champ Bailey and Ed Reed — so this list could have another addition come Saturday night.

1. Ray Lewis , Class of 2018

The only real answer to the question of “What is the best Hall of Fame induction moment?” is the entirety of Ray Lewis’ nonsensical monologue . His enshrinement speech felt like it lasted 12 years but only went on for 33 minutes, somehow, with his personality falling somewhere in between an inspirational speaker and a Southern Baptist preacher on Easter Sunday.

For all the theatrics, Lewis made some serious points throughout his speech. He went out of his way to thank his coaches and teammates, with both the Baltimore Ravens and the Miami Hurricanes. He praised his mother for being there and raising him alone, while saying that he continually tries to be the father he never had.

He also said he still kisses his kids on the mouth, to which both his sons aggressively shook their heads.

As Lewis said , “Don’t hate.”

2. Brett Favre , Class of 2016

One of the most emotional Hall of Fame speeches in recent memory is Brett Favre’s from 2016.

“This is tougher than any third-and-15, I can assure you,” Favre said as he got especially choked up sharing stories of his family throughout his life .

Early in the speech, the longtime Green Bay Packers quarterback recounted an adorable story about how he and his future wife, Deanna, started dating when he was 14. He also gave a shoutout to Deanna’s mom : “My mother-in-law who for 33, 34 years has been by far my biggest fan. I have never thrown an interception that has been my fault, according to my mother-in-law, Ann.”

(No one tell Ann that Favre actually threw 336 interceptions, the most in NFL history .)

3. LaDainian Tomlinson , Class of 2017

LaDainian Tomlinson’s Hall of Fame speech was nothing short of inspirational . He delivered a powerful message about unity and noted, “My story is America’s story.”

But the former Chargers running back also brought the laughs. He said that told his mom at 6 years old that he would go to the NFL. At 7 years old, he asked for a weight set for Christmas because he “needed to get bigger if he was going to make it to the NFL.”

That’s the most football guy thing I’ve ever heard. This man was meant for Canton.

4. Joe Montana, Class of 2000

Joe Montana originally had another speech planned. He said that before the Hall of Fame weekend in 2000, he felt like he was already in the coffin with dirt thrown on him, at just 44 years old. “I saw the Hall of Fame as an ending point,” Montana said .

Then, he spent time with his fellow inductees and came to a realization that his enshrinement didn’t mean death. After going his entire life hopping from team to team — from Pop Warner, to high school, to Notre Dame, to the 49ers , and to the Chiefs — he was part of yet another new one.

“I’ve now seen the light that this is not an ending point. This is a beginning point. This is the beginning of the rest of my life, post-career with a new team. Take a look at these guys [pointing to other Hall of Famers behind him] — what a team it is.”

Sometimes, it’s all about the proper perspective.

5. Jerry Rice, Class of 2010

Hall of Famers are just like us. 49ers legend Jerry Rice wore one black and one blue sock to his enshrinement ceremony in 2010 and jokingly asked the crowd to lend him a black sock.

His speech got more sincere as he went on . Rice first joined the football team his sophomore of high school after sprinting away from his principal to avoid getting in trouble. In turn, the principal told the football coach about Rice’s speed and he was offered a position on the team — he had been running ever since.

“There are no more routes to run, no more touchdowns to score, no more records to set. That young boy from Mississippi has finally stopped running. Let me stand here and catch my breath. Let me inhale it all in one more time.”

There’s a reason he’s considered the GOAT.

6. John Elway, Class of 2004

Coach Wade Phillips once called John Elway the “Lou Gehrig of quarterbacks” — which is both quite a large name to live up to and an amazing compliment. Elway said it was his proudest moment as Broncos quarterback because, “I didn’t always have a great game, nor was I always healthy, but my teammates knew that I’d always show up.”

During his enshrinement speech, Elway spent a few minutes talking about all the things his dad, who was also his coach when he was younger, taught him. The most important was: “When you go out with your offensive linemen, you pick up the tab.”

Elway’s father passed away a few years before his son’s induction, but his lessons will live on.

7. Cris Carter, Class of 2013

Cris Carter didn’t have an easy path to Canton . Carter was selected by the Eagles in the supplement draft, but battled drug and alcohol abuse until he turned things around with the Vikings , where he played for 12 seasons. He also had to wait until he was elected to the Hall of Fame, finally getting in during his sixth year of eligibility.

When he got there, he didn’t waste any time, sharing his passion and appreciation right off the bat.

He ended it the same way : “I love football. I love this game. It gave me an identity. It gave me a sense of purpose. For an African American man, it’s a great opportunity in America to be able to play football.”

He should’ve been inducted earlier, but at least he made his speech worth the wait.

In this heightened moment of xenophobia and assault on immigrant identity, I wanted to think through how the game could serve as an affirmational tool for first-generation Americans and immigrant kids, to ask them to consider movement patterns on the field as kin to migratory patterns across social and political borders. Whether footballers or not, immigrants in the US play on endangered ground. I wanted to help the kids understand that the same muscle that they use to plan the next goal can also be used to navigate the next block. For me, freedom exists in the body. We talk about it abstractly and even divisively, like “protect our freedom,” “build this wall,” “they hate us because of our freedom.” We have all these systems that are beautifully designed to incarcerate us or deport us, but how do we design freedom? For these kids, I wanted to track the idea back to something that exists inside that no one could take away, so I developed this curriculum that’s part poli-sci class, part soccer tournament, inside of an arts festival. It accesses /peh-LO-tah/’s field of inquiry to create a sports-based political action for young people. The project is called “Moving and Passing.” It intersects curriculum development, site-specific performance and the politics of joy, while using soccer as a metaphor for the urgent question of enfranchisement among immigrant youth. Imagine that you are a 15-year-old kid from Honduras now living in Harlem, or you’re a 13-year-old girl born in DC to two Nigerian immigrants. You love the game. You’re on the field with your folks. You’ve just been practicing dribbling through cones for, like, 15 minutes, and then, all of a sudden, a marching band comes down the field. I want to associate the joy of the game with the exuberance of culture, to locate the site of joy in the game at the same physical coordinate as being politically informed by art, a grass-laden theater for liberation. We spend a week looking at how the midfielder would explain Black Lives Matter, or how the goalkeeper would explain gun control, or how a defender’s style is the perfect metaphor for the limits of American exceptionalism. As we study positions on the field, we also name and imagine our own freedoms. I don’t know, man, soccer is, like, the only thing on this planet that we can all agree to do together. You know? It’s like the official sport of this spinning ball. I want to be able to connect the joy of the game to the ever-moving footballer, to connect that moving footballer to immigrants who also moved in sight of a better position. Among these kids, I want to connect their families’ histories to the bliss of a goal-scorer’s run, family like that feeling after the ball beats the goalie, the closest thing going to freedom.Thank you. (Applause) "

I’m in the Charles Pearson Theatre at the University of Melbourne, watching 12 short speeches. It’s a 3 minute speech competition called the 3 minute Thesis .

These annual, 3 minute speech competitions challenge Ph.D and Masters students to effectively communicate 3-1/2 years’ of technical research into a short speech. Their task is to convey only the most important ideas and findings to a non-technical audience – and with only a single slide.

A short speech is a great test

As you’d imagine, it can be difficult to condense all that research and knowledge into a 3 minute speech, yet still convey all the pertinent information .

But that’s exactly why it’s such a great exercise for all speakers .

That’s because, in order to be effective, your ideas must be able to be communicated in the most brief, simple and clear manner possible. You need them to stick in the listener’s mind.

Not everyone is good at this skill – indeed, few people are. But you need to be if you want other to see the value of your ideas.

What did the winning speakers do right?

Despite giving a short speech on very different topics, there were some common practices I noticed about the winning speakers.

They presented an exceptionally clear message .
They included a “ top and tail ” element.
They made use of metaphor and other verbal illustrations to simplify a complex idea.
They spoke like they were having a conversation with their audience – not ‘giving a formal speech’.

The losing speakers, by contrast, were more forced. Some were so unnatural they seemed to be giving a pantomime a speech for an audience of children. The engagement of conversation was missing. We’ve talked before about the importance of an unforced, natural style .

How to create a short speech.

1. use a simple structure..

Start by clearly saying the ‘headline’ and key idea underpinning your speech in simple, everyday language, and follow with a simple structure supporting your main point. Here are some examples:

A: Headline and 3 supporting reasons:

With this approach, follow your “headline” statement with 3 simple supporting reasons. State each reason clearly, and explain how each one helps achieve or support the objective.

“We must change the way we work – for 3 important reasons:

Thwack …,
Kapow…,
Whamm. “

B: Problem – solution:

This is a simple structure of only 2 parts. It’s an easy yet powerful way to capture people’s attention and interest when done well. But you’ll want to avoid the trap of rushing through the problem, and spending too much time on your brilliant solution.

If you really want to hook people, take some time to paint a vivid picture of the problem first. Your audience will then be clambering for a solution with both ears open.

C: Timeline:

In this type of short speech, you might cover:

The history of the issue …
The current situation …
What might happen in the future …
And the ramifications of agreeing (or disagreeing) with your main argument.

D: Metaphor/Top & Tail:

To “top and tail” simply means starting with a story/quote that hints at your message. At the end, you recall that story and link it to your message.

This short speech from a 3 minute speech competition makes excellent use of this approach.

Start your speech (“the top”) with a compelling metaphor to make a memorable point, and end the speech (“the tail”) with the same metaphor — but adjusted to show the benefit of adopting your central argument.

2: End with a memorable message:

Just as important as how you begin and structure your speech, is how you end it .

Consider the same techniques at the end of your speech. A metaphor that links back to your original premise, or finishing with a thought-provoking question, are two ways to burnish your speech in your listener’s mind.

6. Coach Flowers’ JV Championship Speech

9. Coach Tony Arcuri’s 2007 Pregame Speech to the Indian Hill Braves High School Football Team.

This is an important lesson for your kid, who almost certainly will face an opponent (or teammate, for that matter) who is bigger, stronger, and/or faster than they are.

Yes, this speech is from a movie, which violates this list’s only rule. Herb Brooks’ speech before the 1980 Men’s U.S. Olympic hockey team pulled off the “Miracle on Ice” happened behind closed doors. But none of that matters because Junior can’t lose — not this game, not tonight. Also, because the movie recreation, Miracle, led to this kid reciting Brooks’ speech .

It's Ray Lewis' birthday, so in honor of the future Hall of Famer, we look at some of the greatest speeches ever given in the history of sports.

In sports, the mental game is half the battle of any victory. You can train all you want, practice all you want, and run through every single play, but you still won't come out with the win if you and your teammates aren't mentally prepared. Great coaches all know this, from guys like Vince Lombardi to Jim Valvano . Being a great coach isn't just about managing personalities and laying out schemes, it's also about being a master motivator.

Of course, moments of great motivation in sports don't have to just come before, during, or after a game. They can happen in moments of honor or awards or vulnerability. As Kevin Durant 's MVP acceptance speech proved to us last week, an individual award can also be a platform for recognizing an entire team, and the sacrifices made by loved ones for the good of another human being. It's times like these that sports inspire, motivate, and energize all of us.

Back in his senior season with the Miami Hurricanes, Reed and his teammates found themselves down 21-13 at halftime against their rival Florida State, putting their perfect season in jeopardy.

However, as they were readying themselves to head back out onto the field, Reed delivered a few choice words to let his fellow 'Canes know that they needed to step it up. "I'm putting my heart in this shit, dawg," he screamed. "Let's go, man!" Thankfully, Reed's teammates heard him. The Hurricanes would score 27 points in the third quarter en route to a 49-27 victory.

In terms of intensity and preparation, Coach Flowers of the Leland Chargers takes the cake on this list. Firstly, he has his players ready to respond with the "I am a champion" remark. Secondly, he has a script in hand. Thirdly, he's playing music from The Last of the Mohicans in the background.

Honestly, the entire affair is borderline insane—especially when you consider that this was for a JV football game—but you have to love his commitment to the production, and if this doesn't get you motivated or pumped up in the least bit, then you should consider getting your pulse checked.

13. We Are BC

Speaker : Steve Addazio Date : 8/31/2013 Team : Boston College Eagles Situation : Pre-game address for Boston College's season opener

In his first season as the head football coach for the Boston College Eagles, Steve Addazio wanted to let his players know that they were part of something bigger than one season or one team. "We’re BC," he told them. "It’s not just about 11 on the field at one time...This program is built on the whole family."

Addazio was speaking of the entire Boston College football legacy, a lineage that spanned back for decades, and one that those players were now members of. And in his first game with the team, Addazio's players did well to represent that history, defeating the Villanova Wildcats 24-14.

12. Pissed Off For Greatness

Speaker: Ray Lewis Date: 5/28/2012 Team: Stanford Cardinal men's basketball team Situation: Pre-game address for the 2012 NIT semifinals

We've seen it countless times before throughout Ray Lewis' storied career: the Baltimore Ravens defensive leader acting as the team's emotional compass. However, we'd never really seen Lewis provide these services for another team until the Stanford Cardinal men's basketball team brought Lewis into their fold for the 2012 NIT tournament.

The NIT may not be that prestigious anymore, but that wasn't going to stop Stanford from making it a once-in-a-lifetime moment. With Lewis' help, the Cardinal learned they needed to be "pissed off for greatness." And clearly, they were. The team would go on to defeat their opponent, UMass, by a score of 74-64 before winning the entire tournament in the next round.

11. I Know Your Heart

Speaker : Derrick Moore Date : 9/1/2007 Team : Georgia Tech football team Situation : Pre-game address for Georgia Tech's season opener

As the team chaplain, Derrick Moore had a close relationship with the members of the 2007 Georgia Tech football team. And when the squad was getting ready to start up their 2007 season, he let those guys know how much it meant to them.

"It has truly been an honor to know each and everyone one of you by name," he began. "I know your heart." Delving into this relationship, Moore continues his speech with an evangelical fervor, letting each and every player know that they have what it takes to succeed. On that day, the Yellow Jackets proved Moore correct. They squashed the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 33-3.

10. Manic Aggression

Speaker : Paul O'Connell Date : 2/11/2007 Team : Ireland rugby team Situation : Pre-game address for Six Nations Test versus France

Rugby players are a different breed, as they willfully put their bodies on the line for every test without any of the protection that an American football game can offer. However, it's not just the physical differences that separate rugby players from the rest. It's also the mental aspect, as you'll see from Paul O'Connell's stirring, but intimidating, pre-test speech for Ireland's Six Nations test against France.

O'Connell wants his teammates to "put the fear of God" in their opponents, among other, equally intense objectives. Since the speech, O'Connell has admitted that he's now "embarrassed" about the moment (perhaps because Ireland ended up losing the test), but we believe that he still deserves recognition for rallying his teammates no matter how over-the-top his methods may have been.

9. We Got 30 Minutes For the Rest of Our Lives

Speaker : Tim Tebow Date : 1/8/2009 Team : Florida Gators Situation : 2009 BCS National Championship Game

With his Florida Gators knotted with the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2009 BCS National Championship Game, Tim Tebow wanted his team to come out of halftime ready to win. After a lackluster first half, the game was tied at just 7-7. However, Tebow declared that it wouldn't stay that way for long. "We get the ball, I can promise you one thing," he said. "We're gonna hit somebody, and we'll take it downfield for a touchdown." The Gators would make good on his guarantee, edging out the Sooners 24-14.

8. It's Not Going to Come Easy

Speaker : Vince Lombardi Date : 1/14/1968 Team : Green Bay Packers Situation : Pre-game addess for Super Bowl II

Vince Lombardi is the kind of legendary figure in sports whose presence and poise often meant more than his words. As the head coach for the Green Bay Packers, Lombardi led his team to the first two Super Bowl titles in NFL history, first over the Kansas City Chiefs, and then over the Oakland Raiders. However, in Super Bowl II, there were some who felt that the Raiders would have a chance to defeat the Packers after the hard-fought game Green Bay had endured against the Dallas Cowboys in the previous round.

Sensing a possible letdown, Lombardi let his team know what they needed to do in a succinct, but inspiring, pre-game speech. "Just hit, just run, just block, and just tackle," he told them. And it was as simple as that. Green Bay would go on to win 33-14.

7. It's About Us

Speaker : Drew Brees Date : 12/26/2011 Team : New Orleans Saints Situation : Post-game address after the Brees broke Dan Marino's single-season passing record

It isn't often that you see a player go out of their way to thank every member of the organization or the team that they're a part of after they've earned an award or broken a record. However, after breaking Dan Marino's long-standing record for most passing yards in a single season back in 2011, Drew Brees made sure that everyone in the locker room knew how much they meant to him when he was given the game ball by the coaching staff.

"It's about us," Brees said, as he thanked the equipment managers, the owners, his teammates, and seemingly everyone he could think of. At the end of the speech, it should be clear to everyone why the New Orleans Saints have enjoyed all the success they've earned with Brees at the helm: his unshakable belief in the concept of teamwork.

6. This Is Your Everest

Speaker : Jim Telfer Date : 6/21/1997 Team : British & Irish Lions Situation : Pre-game address for test against the Springboks

With the British & Irish Lions playing the underdog during their 1997 tour in South Africa, assistant coach Jim Telfer knew that he needed a way to properly inspire his Lions players to victory. And as they were readying for their first test against the Springboks, Telfer succeeded in his mission.

"You have an awesome responsibility on these eight individual forward's shoulders, an awesome responsibility," Telfer began. "This your f***ing Everest boys. Very few ever get the chance in rugby terms to get to Everest, the top of Everest. You have the chance." The Lions would seize the opportunity, winning their test series 2-1 in a considerable upset.

5. You're the Real MVP

Speaker : Kevin Durant Date : 5/6/2014 Team : Oklahoma City Thunder Situation : His acceptance speech for the 2013-14 NBA MVP Award

Last week, in what was one of the longest and greatest acceptance speeches ever, Kevin Durant gave an off-the-cuff and passionate explanation of what winning the NBA MVP Award meant to him, and how exactly he got there. Many were touched by the words he said about his mother, thanking her profusely for everything he gave him and the rest of their family. "When you didn't eat, you made sure we ate. You went to sleep hungry. You sacrificed for us. You're the real MVP," he said.

However, it wasn't just the love for his mother that grabbed everyone's attention. It was also the fact that Durant wanted to thank every single one of his teammates, especially his superstar counterpart Russell Westbrook, when detailing how he managed to earn the prestigious award.

For years, Durant had been labelled as "too nice," a sort of backhanded compliment that he finally managed to shed this year by ruthlessly dominating teams night in and night out. However, in his most vulnerable moment yet, everyone was glad to see that KD could still be the nice guy when the time called for it. KD's words motivated the Thunder to a 112-101 victory over the Clippers the following night.

4. It Ain't About One Play

Speaker : Ray Lewis Date : 1/22/2012 Team : Baltimore Ravens Situation : Post-game address for the 2012 AFC Championship Game

After a tough loss to the New England Patriots in the 2012 AFC Championship Game, the Baltimore Ravens weren't feeling good about themselves. A stripped pass in the end zone had prevented the Ravens from scoring the winning touchdown in the closing minute, and a missed field had kept them from tying it at the last second. However, Ray Lewis wasn't about to listen to anyone who wanted to moan about the loss or a single play.

"We fought as a team," he said in the locker room. "The fact is, we gotta come back and go to work." They certainly did. The Ravens would avenge their AFC Championship Game loss in the next season against the Patriots before capturing their second Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XLVII.

3. This is Our F***ing City

Speaker : David Ortiz Date : 4/20/2013 Team : Boston Red Sox Situation : Pre-game address to Boston fans

After the 2013 Boston Marathon tragedy, the city of Boston was in need of a boost to their morale. So, with the city turning out in huge number for the April 20 game against the Kansas City Royals, star player David Ortiz knew that he needed to bring up the crowd's spirits. It wasn't a long, eloquent speech, but it was incredibly effective.

First, Ortiz let them know that the Red Sox represented the city of Boston, and not just the franchise. After that, he thanked the Boston mayor, the Massachusetts governor, and all the public service employees who had helped Boston citizens during the horrific incident. Then, out of nowhere, Ortiz said his now-famous line: "This is our fucking city. And nobody gonna dictate our freedom. Stay strong." Mind you, this happened on live television. However, given the gravity of the moment, it's hard to believe that anyone would complain about Ortiz's sentiments.

2. Leave No Doubt

Speaker : Billl Stewart Date : 1/2/2008 Team : West Virginia Mountaineers Situation : Pre-game address for the 2008 Fiesta Bowl

Interim head coach Bill Stewart took over the West Virginia football team at a tumultuous moment. Former head coach Rich Rodriguez had just left the team to take the job as the Michigan Wolverines HC, leaving his Mountaineers players without their offensive mastermind and leader. However, Stewart wasn't willing to let his players get too down about it. With the Oklahoma Sooners waiting, Stewart needed his guys to be ready to play.

"Let 'em know," he told them. "Leave no doubt tonight! They shouldn't have played the old Gold and Blue!" He was right. The Mountaineers would dominate the Sooners by a score of 48-28, making the loss one of the worst in Bob Stoops' career as the Oklahoma head coach.

1. Don't Ever Give Up

Speaker : Jim Valvano Date : 3/4/1993 Team : N/A Situation : The 1993 ESPY Awards

With cancer ravaging his body, former NC State men's basketball coach Jimmy Valvano was determined to make one last stand to the public, delivering a speech at the inaugural ESPY Awards that would come to define his legacy.

During his speech, Valvano candidly explained the consequences of his illness, but still bravely rallied support for his cause, and remained adamant that no one give up hope. "I just got one last thing," he said. "I urge all of you, all of you, to enjoy your life, the precious moments you have." And on a closing note, Valvano famously expressed, "Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever."

Valvano would succumb to cancer on April 28, 1993. However, the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research lives on to carry his name.

That’s bad. All-time bad. But it got me thinking, what constitutes a good, even great, pre-game pump up talk? For athletes in leadership positions on their teams who truly want to crush their next pre-game talk, what do they need to do?

WHAT’S THE POINT?

We need to start with this question because it is useless to think through the steps if you have no idea where you want those steps to lead you. With that said, it is not terribly difficult to determine the ultimate purpose of a pre-game talk.

A pre-game talk’s primary goal is to get your teammates mentally ready for the start of the competition.

The only obstacle that exists for some of your teammates to perform to the level they are capable is themselves. So, what do you need to do to give the greatest pre-game speech of all time, a speech that will turn mental midgets into giants, a speech that will turn your tentative turtle teammates into fire breathing dragons?

Consider the following:

REMEMBER WHAT SPORT YOU PLAY

This is important. Football players get hyped up much differently than golfers. Those two sports probably represent both ends of the pendulum of hype and focus. When preparing your speech, remember to make the tone and energy appropriate to the sport you play. Speaking of tone…

DETERMINE YOUR TONE BEFOREHAND

There are many different emotions you can muster up. Don’t feel like you need to tap into all of them. Choose one that fits your personality and master it. If you try to be someone you’re not, your teammates will know and the effectiveness will be lost. Here are some “tone” options.

Psycho scream

Tebow bleeds energy and enthusiasm on the field. Away from the field he is calm, level headed. What makes this so effective is that he takes his energy from the field and carries it into the locker room.

Calm and confidence

The Herb Brooks locker room speech from Miracle is a classic. There is no panic in his voice—just a calm confidence. You can see in the player’s eyes that this is what they need in this moment. They’re worried and intimidated. Brooks does not counter that by yelling and getting them pumped. He meets them where they are at with his calm demeanor.

This is my favorite motivation speech—maybe of all time. For one, this is not a scene from a movie. This is real life. And it is beautiful. Yes, the music in the background helps but what makes this great is Coach Stewart starts slow and gradually gets more and more intense. He is ready to take his team on a drive at 100 mph but he knows he needs to get them in the car and buckled up first. I dare you to watch this and not get goosebumps.

Sentimental

From the movie Rudy, the coach taps into the sentimental side of the athletes. Notre Dame is a historical football school, filled with pride. He doesn’t put the focus on hitting or bringing intensity to the other team, he places all the focus on his own squad, reminding them that the Seniors are playing their last game.

KNOW YOUR TEAMMATES

How do you know which tone to take? This should largely depend on the personality of your team as a whole, as well as certain individuals. Are your teammates insecure? If so, you probably want to remind them of their training and instill a calm confidence in them, not freak them out by yelling. Are they timid? You don’t need to be a comedian but feel the freedom to make the laugh. Loosen them up a bit! Do your teammates play better when they are hyped up? Then…GET THEM HYPED UP! Is your team prone to large momentum shifts? Remind them that when hardships come, to pick one another up and press on.

DON’T SLANDER YOUR RIVAL

Try to refrain from using this platform as an opportunity to point out all of the negative things about your opponent. If they have weaknesses that need to be exposed, great. But avoid broad, sweeping statements that focus on how much you don’t like them. Keep the focus on your team and what you do well. Confidence is a better predictor of success than hate or disdain. Jonathan Fader, a sport psychologist, says that “One of the biggest predictors of success in athletics, and life in general, is confidence—the expectation that you will succeed.” If you want to prep your team well, instill confidence in THEM. Let the other team worry about themselves.

DON’T GO TOO LONG

Keep it simple. Your job is to help free your teammates up mentally so that they perform at an optimal level. The longer you go and the more ideas you present, the more you will confuse your team. If you have a propensity to go a little long it is because you have not prepared well enough.

A simple way to force yourself into a shorter pre-game talk is to simply memorize your close out statement. A lot of times we error on the side of length because we want to land the plane well and we end up talking and talking until we feel like we nailed it. The longer you talk, the harder it is for the nail to be driven home. Athlete, know ahead of time how you want to close it out!

Being tasked with motivating your team before, or in the middle of a game is a privilege. Don’t wing it. As a staff friend of mine often says: “The separation is in the preparation.” Do yourself and your squad a favor by thinking it through ahead of time. Hopefully they respond with a performance worthy of the speech that led them into it!

CHICAGO (AP) — The Democratic National Convention’s third night showcased a familiar former president, Bill Clinton, and introduced more Americans to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz , little known outside his state until Vice President Kamala Harris selected him as her running mate.

Walz, with his background as a former teacher and football coach, used his speech to put a small-town spin on the Democrats’ agenda of protecting individual freedoms and rejecting what they paint as the intrusive policies of Republican Donald Trump.

Wednesday’s program also highlighted plenty of up-and-coming Democratic politicians and media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who gave an energetic speech in support of the party’s ticket.

Here are some takeaways from the third night of the DNC.

Walz offers himself as Midwestern everyman

For years, Republicans have caricatured Democrats as coastal elites who have little in common with ordinary Americans.

Walz tried to use his biography as a hunter, teacher, football coach and national guardsman from the Midwest to disarm those attacks, which Republicans in the past have wielded with merciless efficiency.

His presence on the ticket offers a counterweight in a year when Republicans are trying to paint Harris as a California liberal with dangerous ideas.

During his speech, Walz sought to turn Republican arguments on their head while making an appeal for common sense rooted in his Midwestern values.

“When they were banning books from their schools, we were banishing hunger from ours,” he jabbed.

It’s a pitch aimed at constituencies that Democrats have struggled to connect with in recent years, namely rural, white voters who have increasingly abandoned the party.

Walz was introduced by Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who asked, “Who better to find common ground than a guy with Midwestern common sense?”

The Big Dog in twilight turns the age question toward Trump

Clinton has spoken at 13 straight Democratic National Conventions, going back to 1976. On Wednesday night he confessed, “I have no idea how many more of these I’ll be able to come to.”

It was a striking admission from a politician whose dominance earned him the nickname The Big Dog. Clinton, who just turned 78, didn’t shrink from his age, instead turning it into a poke at the GOP nominee, declaring, “I’m still younger than Donald Trump.”

In his 27-minute speech, Clinton leaned into what he’s seen over the decades and the burdens of history. He warned the convention crowd that, however good they feel, the campaign will be tough.

“You should never underestimate your adversary,” Clinton said. It could be taken as an allusion to watching his wife, Hillary Clinton , fall just short of the presidency in 2016.

‘Bring them home’

In a deeply polarized country, there was one group that was welcomed with loud applause at both the Republican and Democratic conventions — the parents of young men taken hostage after Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

Last month in Milwaukee, Ronen and Orna Neutra, told the gathering about the kidnapping of their adult son, Omer, and led the crowd in a chant of “bring them home!” On Wednesday, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, whose 23-year-old son Hersh Goldberg-Polin was kidnapped on Oct. 7, walked onstage to the same chant.

“This is a political convention,” Jon Polin said. “But needing our only son and all of the cherished hostages home is not a political issue. It is a humanitarian issue.”

At the RNC, several speakers — though not the Neutras — slammed President Joe Biden and Harris for not deterring Hamas from its attack and for neglecting the hostages . Polin and Goldberg, for their part, said they’ve spoken repeatedly with the president and vice president and praised their efforts.

While the Republican convention framed Hamas as a threat to the United States, the Democratic convention has been comparably quiet about the war, even as pro-Palestinian protests demonstrate outside the hall demanding the administration stop supporting Israel.

Jan. 6 insurrection back in the spotlight

The Jan. 6 insurrection of 2021 has been a key part of Democratic campaigns ever since the attack on the U.S. Capitol shocked the country. Democrats gave it a place of prominence Wednesday night.

The centerpiece was a video showing Trump urging his supporters to march to the Capitol, the attacks on police officers and the Republican nominee’s pledges to pardon those who were prosecuted. That last bit drew chants of “lock him up” from the Democratic delegates.

Democrats want to step carefully, though, lest an attack on American democracy become just another partisan issue.

To that end, the segment kicked off with Republicans speaking about their worries about Trump. Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan recalled threats from Trump supporters when he refused to accede to the then-president’s demands in 2020 to declare him the winner in Georgia rather than Biden.

Duncan told fellow Republicans that if they vote for Harris, “You’re not a Democrat. You’re a patriot.”

Dems give freedom an expansive definition

Wednesday night’s convention theme was “Freedom.” Backed by Beyoncé’s song of the same name, which the musician has authorized the Harris campaign to use, the word flashed on the video screen and in speech after speech at the United Center.

Democrats firmly tied it to the fight over reproductive rights that went into overdrive after the fall of Roe v. Wade. But they also used the freedom argument to slam Republicans on other social issues, from gay rights to the spread of book bans in schools.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a gay man raising two children with his husband, tied it to the conservative Project 2025. The agenda was developed by the conservative Heritage Foundation and is seen as a potential blueprint for a second Trump term, although Trump says it is not related to his campaign.

“Project 2025 would turn the entire federal government into a massive machine, it would weaponize it to control our reproductive choices,” Polis said.

And in one of the evening’s most electrifying speeches, Winfrey said of freedom, “Every now and then, it requires standing up to life’s bullies.”

Democrats, long associated with Hollywood, look to online influencers

The Democratic Party boasts a cache of celebrity supporters who have repeatedly lent their glamor and opened their wallets to the party. Now they’re teaming up with those who have attained renown in a decidedly 21st-century way: online.

More than 200 content creators and influencers have been granted access to the DNC’s backstage events this week. And with tens of millions of followers, their coverage of the events can do more to get politicians’ messages out than traditional media and celebrity endorsements.

On TikTok, influencers like Deja Foxx post “OOTD,” or outfit of the day, videos on the DNC’s blue carpet. Her Wednesday fit included a matching khaki set, a pair of Nike Air Force Ones, and an oversized Prada jacket with giant pockets to hold all her equipment, “because slay,” she tells her 141K followers.

The creator has already interviewed Harris on her social media pages and spoke on behalf of Arizona’s delegation at the DNC.

Carlos Eduardo Espina, a Spanish-speaking influencer with 10.2 million followers on TikTok, addressed the convention Wednesday night, part of an appeal to young Latino voters who are crucial to getting Harris elected.

Espina seamlessly joined a senator, a border congresswoman and a Texas sheriff as defenders of the Biden-Harris stance on immigration. “To be pro-immigrant is to be pro-America,” he said.

The Democratic and Republican playlists play to their bases

The playlist at the Republican convention in Milwaukee last month was dominated by classic rock. Now, as the Democrats gather in Chicago, the musical offerings have been far more diverse.

The dueling soundtracks are a reflection of the two parties’ dramatically different voting bases. The GOP convention leaned heavily on the radio rock that was popular when much of their older, whiter base was young in the 1960s and 1970s. The Democrats’ musical offerings, meanwhile, include rap, R&B, indie rock, country, Americana — and, yes, some classic rock — in keeping with the party’s multi-racial coalition.

Across the first two nights at the DNC, there were appearances by Atlanta rapper Lil Jon and Americana singer-songwriter Jason Isbell. The Wednesday lineup included R&B stars Stevie Wonder and John Legend, the latter covering the songs of Minnesota icon Prince. Pop star Pink is slated to perform on the final night.

The GOP convention featured a house band that belted out covers of Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and Lynyrd Skynyrd tunes. The house band also backed up country singer Lee Greenwood, who performed “God Bless the USA.” Rap-rocker Kid Rock, an avowed conservative, also performed.

Watch: Tim Walz’s Rousing Pep Talk on Football and Politics Goes Viral

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz showed off his football coach pep talk skills speaking to a high school football team in western Pennsylvania on Sunday.

At a campaign stop, the former high school teacher and football coach spoke on the field to Aliquippa High School football players, many of whom were likely too young to even vote, and linked the values of the sport to democracy.

“Politics isn’t that much different than this ,” said Walz, who helped rebuild the Mankato West Scarlets and led them to victory in 1999. “It’s about setting a future goal and trying to reach it. It’s about doing it with dignity and hard work.”

Walz described the fourth quarter of a game where players have to trust their teammates.

“Our country’s not that different,” he continued. “Our neighbors want to be with you. Our neighbors want to do what’s right. And the more we figure out that we’re in this thing together, and we have more in common than we have separated. We’re going to do a heck of a lot better.”

He urged the students not to turn away from politics, despite political conversations feeling “pretty ugly” and “pretty negative” these days.

That negativity can be seen in many Republicans claiming that Walz is lying about coaching his winning team. One recent social media post was shared 5,000 times before it was deemed misinformation.

Clearly, the Harris campaign has a different understanding of “locker room talk” than its opponents.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz formally accepted the vice presidential nomination on the third night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, introducing himself to the nation with an impassioned speech that showcased his Midwest roots.

Deploying a folksy, no-holds-barred tone, Walz recounted his career as a public school teacher and his record as governor of Minnesota. He touted the progressive policies he implemented, including paid leave and protections for reproductive rights, and drew upon his experience as a high school football coach to rally Democrats to continue working to win over voters through Election Day.

"It's the fourth quarter. We're down a field goal. But we're on offense. We're driving down the field. And, boy, do we have the right team," Walz said. "We got 76 days. That's nothing. There'll be time to sleep when you're dead. We're gonna leave it all on the field. That's how we'll keep moving forward. That's how we'll turn the page on Donald Trump."

The night included notable speeches from former President Bill Clinton , House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and, in a surprise appearance, Oprah Winfrey . The TV legend offered a full-throated endorsement of Harris, portraying her life story as the continuation of a long American tradition of overcoming adversity.

Here's how the third night of the DNC played out:

Walz pitches Democratic agenda, vows to "leave it all on the field" in campaign

Walz accused Trump and vice presidential nominee JD Vance of pushing an agenda that would make Americans' lives more difficult. While Trump has distanced himself from the policy proposals described in Project 2025, a presidential transition initiative overseen by the Heritage Foundation, Walz likened the guide to a playbook that will be put to use if Trump is elected to a second term.

"It's an agenda nobody asked for. It's an agenda that serves nobody except the richest people and the most extreme amongst us. And it's an agenda that does nothing for our neighbors in need," he said. "Is it weird? Absolutely. But it's also wrong. And it's dangerous."

Walz denounced Trump's understanding of leadership, and said good leaders "don't spend all day insulting people and blaming people."

"Leaders do the work," he said. "I don't know about you all, but I'm ready to turn the page on these guys. So go ahead, say it with me: 'We're not going back!'"

He then laid out his and Harris' agenda if they are elected president and vice president, which includes tax cuts for middle-class families, lower prescription drug costs and affordable housing.

"No matter who you are, Kamala Harris is gonna stand up and fight for your freedom to live the life that you want to lead," she said. "Because that's what we want for ourselves and it's what we want for our neighbors."

He closed his speech by drawing on his experience as a football coach.

"It's the fourth quarter. We're down a field goal. But we're on offense. We're driving down the field. And, boy, do we have the right team. Kamala Harris is tough, Kamala Harris is experienced. And Kamala Harris is ready," Walz said. "Our job, for everyone watching, is to get in the trenches and do the blocking and tackling. One inch at a time, one yard at a time, one phone call at a time, one door knock at a time, one $5 donation at a time."

He continued: "We got 76 days. That's nothing. There'll be time to sleep when you're dead. We're gonna leave it all on the field. That's how we'll keep moving forward. That's how we'll turn the page on Donald Trump."

Walz lays out biography, touts record as Minnesota governor

Walz recited the main points of his background, recalling his childhood growing up in a small town in Nebraska, his 24 years of service in the Army National Guard and his career as a high school teacher and football coach.

"It was those players and my students who inspired me to run for Congress. They saw in me what I had hoped to instill in them — a commitment to the common good. An understanding that we're all in this together. And the belief that a single person can make a real difference for their neighbors," Walz said. "So there I was, a 40-something high school teacher with little kids, zero political experience and no money, running in a deep-red district. But you know what? Never underestimate a public school teacher."

Walz served 12 years in the House before becoming governor of Minnesota. He touted some of his progressive accomplishments during his time in the governor's mansion, including middle-class tax cuts, paid leave and free lunch and breakfast in public schools.

"While other states were banning books from their schools, we were banishing hunger from ours," he said. "We also protected reproductive freedom, because in Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and the personal choices they make. Even if we wouldn't make those same choices for ourselves, we've got a golden rule: Mind your own damn business."

Klobuchar, introducing Walz, praises his "Midwestern common sense"

"That was a warm-up act!" Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said of the Prince cover.

She didn't miss another opportunity to get in a Prince reference as she introduced Walz, who will accept the vice presidential nomination.

"On behalf of the great state of Minnesota, where purple rains, I stand before you in support of our next vice president, Tim Walz," she said.

She praised Walz's "Midwestern common sense," saying it enables him to find "common ground."

"Who better to take on the price of gas than a guy who could pull over to help change your tire? Who better to serve our nation than a guy who has served in uniform?" she said. "A former football coach knows how to level the playing field, and a former public school teacher knows how to school the likes of JD Vance."

Buttigieg lights into Trump and Vance, saying they're "doubling down on negativity and grievance"

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg opened his speech with a nod to his recent television appearances on Fox News, telling the crowd, "I'm Pete Buttigieg, and you might recognize me from Fox News."

He launched into criticisms of Trump and Vance, who he characterized as "one of those guys who thinks if you don't live the life he has in mind for you, then you don't count."

"Choosing a guy like JD Vance to be America's next vice president sends a message, all right: doubling down on negativity and grievance. A concept of campaigning best summed up in one word: darkness. That's what they are selling. But I just don't think America today is in the market for darkness," he said.

Oprah Winfrey rallies Democrats in raucous surprise appearance

Oprah Winfrey riled up the crowd of Democrats with a surprise appearance, offering a full-throated endorsement of Harris.

"We're now so fired up, we can't wait to leave here and do something," she said. "And what we're going to do is elect Kamala Harria as the next president of the United States."

Winfrey warned of politicians who are seeking to sow division in the country and push a message of fear, but encouraged Americans to come together in unity.

"When we stand together, it is impossible to conquer us," she said.

Winfrey invoked the late Georgia Rep. John Lewis, a Democrat who was a civil rights activist, in speaking of the continued effort to protect freedom.

"When a house is on fire, we don't ask about the homeowner's race or religion. We don't wonder who their partner is or how they voted. No. We just try to do the best we can to save them," she said. "And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady, well, we try to get the cat out too."

Winfrey's comment was a reference to television remarks Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance made in 2021 lamenting that the country is run by a "bunch of childless cat ladies."

The iconic talk show host accused Trump of using "old tricks and tropes" to distract Americans.

"But we are beyond ridiculous tweets and lies and foolery," she said. "These are complicated times and they require adult conversations."

Winfrey's speech evoked emotion from convention attendees, as cameras showed delegates wiping tears and breaking out into chants of "U-S-A."

"Soon, very soon, we're going to be teaching our daughters and sons about how this child of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, two idealistic immigrants — immigrants — how this child grew up to become the 47th president of the United States," she said. "That is the best of America."

Winfrey rebuked Trump's comments about elections to demonstrate the importance of voting, and made a direct appeal to independent and undecided voters: "You know I'm telling you the truth that values and character matter most of all in leadership and in life."

She said "decency and respect," as well as common sense are on the ballot in November.

"We are Americans. Let us choose loyalty to the Constitution over loyalty to any individual because that's the best of America. Let us choose optimism over cynicism because that's the best of America. And let us choose inclusion over retribution, let us choose common sense over nonsense because that's the best of America. And let us choose the sweet promise of tomorrow over the bitter return to yesterday," she said.

Winfrey continued: "We won't go back. We won't be set back, pushed back, bullied back, kicked back, we're not going back. Let us choose truth, let us choose honor and let us choose joy because that's the best of America."

Shapiro pushes voters to "choose a path of decency" in next election

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro praised Harris as a barrier-breaking candidate, and contrasted her with Trump and the policies he and fellow Republicans have advocated.

"Will we be a nation defined by chaos and extremism or will we choose a path of decency, honor and continued progress?" he said.

Shapiro was considered by Harris and her team to serve as her running mate, though the nod ultimately went to Walz.

"Kamala Harris, well she has spent her entire career making progress," he said. "Donald Trump, a man with no guardrails, wants to take away our rights and our freedoms."

Shapiro lambasted Trump and Republicans for their stance on abortion and education.

"It sure as hell isn't freedom to say, you can go vote, but he gets to pick the winner. That's not freedom," he said.

The Pennsylvania Democrat said while Harris and Walz are on the ballot, it is Americans' rights that are at stake in the November election.

"You have the power to shape the future of this country, just like our ancestors who fought for freedom on the battlefield and sat-in at lunch counters so their kids could stand up," he said.

He urged voters to "write the next chapter in our American story."

Pelosi gives nod to Biden for "patriotic vision of a fairer America"

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the inauguration of Mr. Biden and Harris was the start of "one of the most successful presidencies of modern times."

She ticked off the list of legislation enacted when Democrats controlled the House in the first two years of Mr. Biden's administration, including a sweeping infrastructure package and their signature climate, tax and health care plan.

"All thanks to President Biden's patriotic vision of a fairer America, doing so with liberty and justice for all. Thank you Joe," she said. "And I know that Vice President Harris is ready to take us to new heights."

Pelosi's comments about Mr. Biden come amid reports the president is upset she pushed him to exit the presidential race. As the president was working to bolster support for his candidacy from congressional Democrats last month, the California Democrat appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" and declined to explicitly back his reelection bid.

During her convention speech, Pelosi praised Harris, calling her a "person of deep faith" and a "leader of strength, with wisdom and eloquence on policy."

The California Democrat invoked the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, and encouraged attendees to remember Trump's role in the attack.

"Never before had a president of the United States so brazenly assaulted the bedrock of our democracy, so gleefully embraced political violence, so willfully betrayed his oath of office," she said. "Let us not forget who assaulted democracy on Jan. 6. He did. But let us not forget who saved democracy that day. We did."

She said the events of Jan. 6 underscore the importance of electing leaders who support free and fair elections, and respect the peaceful transfer of presidential power.

"The choice couldn't be clearer. Those leaders are Vice President Harris and Governor Walz," she said. "When the sun rose on Jan. 7, as our national anthem declares, we 'gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.' "The thing I remember the most about the vice president is that Kamala Harris can cook," she said. "But she also knew that my family was watching. So as she gently corrected my sloppy dosa making, she was complimenting me every step of the way, making sure that my daughter, Kit, heard how good of a cook I am. She had no desire to be seen as better than anyone else.

"When she finally fit into my dosa, she looked at me and said, 'Really good!' and then never took another bite again."

Olivia Troye, who served as an adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence, and former Georgia Lieutenant Gov. Geoff Duncan, both Republicans, took to the convention stage to speak out against Trump and voice their support for Harris.

Troye said it is Trump's "M.O. to sow doubt and division."

"That's what Trump wants because it's the only way he wins," she said. "And that's what our foreign adversaries want, because it's the only way they win."

Both Troye and Duncan sought to assuage concerns their fellow Republicans may have for supporting Harris, a Democrat.

"You're not voting for a Democrat. You're voting for democracy," Troye said. "You're not betraying our party. You're standing up for our country."

Duncan criticized the GOP with Trump as its leader.

"Our party is not civil or conservative. It is chaotic and crazy," he said. "And the only thing left to do is dump Trump. These days our party acts more like a cult, a cult worshiping a felonist thug."

The former Georgia lieutenant governor called Harris a "steady hand" and said any Republican who backs her in November is not a Democrat, but a "patriot."

Duncan recalled having armed law enforcement outside his home in 2020 after he was attacked by Trump and his son, sharing a coaster he received from his father that included the message, "Doing the right thing will never be the wrong thing. Stay strong."

"To my fellow Republicans at home that want to pivot back toward policy, empathy and tone: You know the right thing to do. Now let's have the courage to do it in November," Duncan said.

Parents of Israeli hostage make plea for return of hostages held in Gaza

Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, whose son Hersh Goldberg-Polin was taken hostage by Hamas during the Oct. 7 terror attack, delivered somber remarks to the convention and called for the release of hostages being held in Gaza.

They took the stage to chants of "bring them home."

"This is a political convention. But needing our only son and all of the cherished hostages home is not a political issue. It is a humanitarian issue," Polin said.

He offered gratitude to President Biden and Harris for their efforts to secure the release of their son and the others who remain held captive by Hamas.

"They're both working tirelessly for a hostage and cease-fire deal that will bring our precious children, mothers, fathers, spouses, grandparents and grandchildren home, and will stop the despair in Gaza," Polin said.

He continued: "In an inflamed Middle East, we know the one thing that can most immediately release pressure and bring calm to the entire region: a deal that brings this diverse group of 109 hostages home and ends the suffering of the innocent civilians in Gaza. The time is now."

Goldberg-Polin closed with a message for her son, saying, "Hersh, if you can hear us, we love you, stay strong, survive."

Project 2025 returns as Colorado governor warns of agenda's proposals on abortion, families

The policy book states "families comprised of a married mother, father, and their children are the foundation of a well-ordered nation and healthy society" and calls working fathers "essential to the well-being and development of their children."

"I'm going to take that one out. I'm going to put that in my pocket so I can share it with undecided voters so they better understand what's at stake this election," he said.

Polis then warned that the policy proposals outlined in the agenda would weaponize the government to "control our reproductive and personal choices."

Suozzi, who flipped GOP seat, says "the border is broken" and Republicans "sabotaged" fix

Democrats turned to Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York to deliver a message on immigration and border security .

His focus on the issues won him a special election in February, replacing disgraced former Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from Congress last year and recently pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft.

In his speech, Suozzi invoked his family's story, saying his father came from Italy, served in World War II and then was elected the youngest judge in the history of New York state.

He called the polarization on immigration "painful."

"Let's be clear, the border is broken," he said. "But this year, when Democrats and Republicans worked together to finally write new border laws, we were blocked. We all know who sabotaged us."

Republicans and Democrats reached a compromise in February that would have been the first comprehensive border security policy overhaul in decades. But Republicans ultimately blocked the bill after Trump announced his opposition to it.

Democrats put the spotlight on abortion once again with a series of speakers who lead pro-abortion rights organizations. The issue was a motivator for voters in the 2022 midterms, the first to take place after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade , and Democrats are hoping it will again help propel their candidates to victory in November.

"When abortion is on the ballot, we win," said Minnie Timmaraju, president and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All, before ticking off the seven states where the pro-abortion rights position succeeded when the issue was directly on the ballot in 2022 .

Voters in at least eight states will have the chance to weigh in on abortion ballot measures in November. The second night of the convention featured remarks from several women who spoke about their experiences in states with abortion restrictions.

Alexis McGill Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood, recalled a pregnant woman from Georgia who had to fly to California to get an abortion, and warned of the health care landscape in states with near-total bans or stringent restrictions.

"We cannot call ourselves a free nation when women are not free," she said.

Former Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said politics shouldn't interfere with a patient's health care.

"When women are free to make their own decisions about their lives and follow our dreams, we are unstoppable," she said. "But when Roe v. Wade was overturned, a generation of women lost that freedom."

Jessica Mackler, who leads EMILYs List, recited from Justice Samuel Alito's majority opinion in the case that unwinded the constitutional right to abortion, in which he wrote, "Women are not without electoral or political power."

"Donald Trump and Republicans are about to find out just how true that is," Mackler said. "The opportunity is before us. The power is in our hands, and the time is now."

Our lives would not be complete without sports, which also significantly contribute to intergroup harmony. There is no denying the thrill of seeing your favourite team or person participate, whether you are a fan of football, basketball, soccer, or any other sport.

Sports, though, are much more than just fun. They also offer significant advantages for both physical and mental health. Participating in sports helps keep people active and healthy and teach them valuable life lessons like discipline, perseverance, and collaboration.

Sports can help individuals, but they can also benefit groups of people and society as a whole. They can foster a sense of pride and unity among people from all backgrounds and cultures.

So keep in mind the many ways that sports improve our lives and bring us together the next time you’re watching your favourite team or athlete participate.

90 minutes of sweat.. 90 minutes of pain…

All the hard work, all the sacrifices you have made, it all comes down to these 90 minutes.

When you step on that field, you’re spending 90 minutes. 90 minutes that will never come back.  These 90 minutes can determine your future, they can change your whole life if you use them correctly.

During this limited time you must work harder than the rest.  You must do your best, no matter what the scoreboard says. You must give your all, no matter what ANYONE says.

This sport is unpredictable, at one moment it feels like you’re losing… and in the next you might be winning.

Everyone wants to win, but one thing is for sure. When you’re walking down that tunnel, when you step on the field – KNOW in your heart there will only be ONE winner.

There will only be ONE WINNER because you will NOT accept anything else.

GO FOR THE WIN OR GO HOME!

I’m not here to participate , I’m here to win and win ONLY

I didn’t come this far to see the other team lift the trophy! I didn’t come this far to see the other team win!

NO ONE remembers the one who finished second, NO ONE remembers the one who received the silver medal!

The person who puts in the most hours on the training ground, the person who wants it the most is the one who will win! This sport requires a strong body but even a stronger mindset. If you’re not prepared mentally you will never be ready physically.

You have to program your mind into victory.

This game is all about how bad you want it, it’s about grit. It’s about HEART. The difference between winning and losing is how far you’re willing to go!

Your HUNGER will be tested on the field. Your DESIRE to win, will determine the outcome of the game.

We keep on fighting even if the odds are stacked against us.

They don’t know that we have the heart, the courage and the will to make things happen!

We will destroy everything that comes in our way, BECAUSE WE WERE BORN TO WIN, WE WERE BORN TO DOMINATE!

We might be the underdogs, we might be the “weaker” team.

But one thing is for sure: When we step on the field we FIGHT. We fight for ourselves and WE FIGHT for each other!  YOU WILL NEVER PLAY THIS EXACT GAME AGAIN IN YOUR LIFE!!

YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TODAY IN YOUR LIFE!
