Mining of Unprotected Student Theses from YAIR to Third Party Website

By Rachel Jacobi, News Editor

The Yeshiva Academic Institutional Repository (YAIR) is an initiative that was recently launched by the Yeshiva University Library with the intent to digitize a wide database of Yeshiva University written material. This digital database includes uploads of undergraduate student journals such as the YU Clarion, Kol Hamevaser , the Journal of Fine Arts, Journal of Abstracts, and other works produced by Yeshiva University schools and its general student populace.

To further maintain its currency, the repository features a YAIR Self-Deposit , where students, faculty, and staff can “ deposit research materials in any digital format, including: articles, monographs, theses and dissertations, working papers, technical reports, conference papers and presentations, datasets, software code, images, video, and other multimedia creations.”

Included in the scholarly works and theses that are digitally available in the repository are 208 honors theses written by undergraduate Stern and Yeshiva College students. As part of the honors program, all honors students are required to design a research project, supervised and mentored by a faculty member. To ensure that these projects are only accessed by the YU community, they are hosted by YAIR through password protection, or are supposed to be.

Two weeks ago, Chani Grossman, Stern College for Women alumnus, discovered that her honor thesis was mined from the repository and published on third party websites, without proper crediting to her name.

This resulted from a lack of oversight by YAIR, as they failed to protect a group of uploaded honor theses. Unprotected works included the theses of both Stern and Yeshiva College honor students. These theses appeared on databases that commonly feature scholarly works, such as Semantic Scholar .

However, YAIR took swift action when the issue was brought to their attention. Chani Grossman commented on Facebook that YAIR “not only immediately password protected [my thesis] when I emailed, they also contacted the outside academic database to have my paper removed.” While a Google search for a student thesis may result in the appearance of a direct link to Semantic Scholar, clicking on the link to visit the page indicates that the thesis has been taken down.

YAIR has also confirmed that all theses and works are now password protected.

Honors Program Scholarships No Longer Tiered

By: Chaim Book  |

Honors program scholarships no longer tiered.

YU has changed the financial structure of the merit-based scholarships for its honors programs so that all accepted applicants will be awarded the same fixed annual sum —  $25,000 for early decision and $20,000 for regular decision.

Previously, the scholarships for the honors program were tiered. Qualified students were evaluated and could be awarded either $10,000, $15,ooo, $20,ooo or $25,000 annually.

When asked for the reason of the change, Director of Admissions Marc Zharnest told The Commentator that the merit-based scholarships are “periodically reviewed and upgraded to keep them in sync with the cost of education.” The cost of tuition for the 2021-22 academic year is $47,500, including undergraduate fees.

Currently, the honors programs are divided between the three undergraduate schools: Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Honors Program at Yeshiva College (YC), S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program at Stern College for Women (SCW) and Business Honors and Entrepreneurial Leadership Program at the Sy Syms School of Business (SSSB). The S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program reduced its maximum scholarship award from $36,600 — covering full tuition — to $30,000 in 2014, The YU Observer reported . It is unclear when that maximum number was then reduced to $25,000.

Although the admission criteria for acceptance to the honors programs has not changed, Zharnest hopes the new financial structure will raise the stakes of the admission process. “Our honors programs have always been very competitive,” he told The Commentator. “We anticipate that this change will make them even more highly sought after by qualified applicants.” Honors students are required to participate in select courses and complete a senior thesis. The YU Honors Program was established in 1999 and is designed to “recognize and cultivate the academic achievements of outstanding students,” Zharnest shared. According to figures provided to The Commentator, there are approximately 520 honors students in YU, broken down to be about 200 in YC, 200 in SCW and 120 in SSSB.

Family Homelessness in NYC: How Can We Solve It?

Journal title, journal issn, volume title, yu faculty profile.

“I am not leaving any New Yorkers behind. We're moving together and that is the goal of what we must accomplish,” said the freshly inaugurated Eric Adams, mayor of New York City, at a March 2022 press conference. He was referring to the undeniable rampant homelessness that in this era, seems almost synonymous with the Big Apple. “I'm not abandoning anyone. I am not believing that dignity is living in a cardboard without a shower, without a toilet...in terrible living conditions...This city is now engaged in a multi-agency mission with compassion and caring, taking our time, not rushing through this, but being compassionate to people who are experiencing terrible circumstances.”1 Keen observers must wonder though, will Adams’ attempts to curb and alleviate homeless work, when the issue has only worsened?
