I: The Toss 

The launch of Eye on the Ball on January 7, 2023, coincided with the anniversary of the MCC match at Bangabandhu National Stadium during 1977. This was the first match where Bangladesh got a taste of international cricket. The author, Yousuf Rahman, top scored in that match. This book is the author's personal reflection and that of others who have been associated with Bangladesh cricket and for whom "cricket is life", as the first sentence of the foreword states.

There is no shortage of anecdotes in the coffee-table book. These anecdotes will start discussions between friends, or Google searches to dig more if you are going to have coffee on your own. The book's subtitle that reads, "a picture is worth a thousand words", keeps the reader visually delighted with generous anecdotes. 

II: The First Innings 

The Table of Contents is organised in the spirit of the three sessions of a day's play of a Test match. The match starts with how cricket came to British India. And thus starts one anecdote after another. A cricket match was first held on March 3, 1845, in today's Balisera Tea Garden in Sreemangal in Bangladesh. This predates the Parsi Oriental Club of Bombay, and the birth of WG Grace. 

Blood, sweat, and football

The reader finds out that Bangabandhu National Stadium is the only venue to have hosted Test matches of two countries. The first in the Pakistan period was in Jan 1955. The next was the first Test in independent Bangladesh (November 2000). On both occasions, India was the opponent. 

The role of Dhaka University in the development and popularisation of cricket in the Pakistan era and early Bangladesh era is well documented, as has been the role of clubs, the first-class structure and BKSP after the birth of Bangladesh. The book presents the many hurdles Bangladesh cricket crossed till the victory in the 1997 ICC Tournament, the 1999 World Cup victory against Pakistan and the ultimate prize, gaining Test status in 2000. 

During the lunch break, the reader is taken on a pictorial trip through Bangladesh. 

An ode to cricket, taken with a pinch of salt

The second session starts with the development of ladies' cricket. The book then delves into the role of private sponsorship including Nirman and others. The reader learns of Faisal Khan and Mohammad Mohasin and how the Bangladesh Cricket Association for the Physically Challenged (BCAPC) and the Wheelchair Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (WCWAB) have promoted the game. BCAPC in a three-match series defeated India 2-1 in Agra in 2014. These are one of the many stories that sadly elude the media. 

'Pride of Performance' inserts short introductions to players of the past and the present. The book includes the personal stories of luminaries and their association with Bangladesh cricket. The author and the team did a wonderful job in assembling all these personalities into one edition. 

Keeping in spirit with the title, Eye on the Ball , the book does not lose focus on some "dirty beamers" of Bangladesh cricket. This includes match-fixing scandals, umpire scandals, players' strike, a rebel tour, and personal challenges ruining careers. 

Last night reminded me of cricket's power to wield stories

The information in the book was either in the public domain scattered everywhere, maturing in secret cellars or in somebody's heart never discussed in public. It needed a herculean teamwork of coordination and passion to present the game of "cricket, lovely cricket" that expresses the heart of Bangladesh and transcends all boundaries. 

The book is pricey, but it is worth its weight in passion from the beginning right to the end. At stumps, the reader will want to go back and revisit the day's play to check if they missed out any detail.

Bangladesh has a deep-seated passion for cricket that is more like a religion, and for a good reason. As far as cricket is concerned, the country has come a long way since before independence. From winning the 1997 ICC Trophy and receiving full ICC membership in 2000 to reaching the 2015 Cricket World Cup semi-finals and the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup, Bangladesh has recorded some outstanding cricket moments over the years.

Opportunities For Bangladesh Cricket

The opportunities for cricket in Bangladesh are immense, from a growing fan base and interest in the sport to the emergence of talented young players and increasing investment in infrastructure. Growing Fan Base and Interest in Cricket

Thanks to a number of successes in recent years, the popularity keeps soaring in Bangladesh, with more people watching the sport and supporting the national team. Without adequate funding and resources, cricket in Bangladesh cannot compete with other top cricketing nations, which may limit the sport’s growth and development.

Limited Availability of Quality Training Facilities

While the BCB has made some investments in developing cricket infrastructure, there is still a shortage of quality training facilities for young players to hone their skills. Many young players in Bangladesh do not have access to quality training facilities, which affects their ability to develop their skills and reach their full potential. This, in turn, affects the development of the sport in the country.

Corruption and Mismanagement in Cricket Administration

Over the years, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has been accused of nepotism, favoritism, and lack of transparency in decision-making. The board’s governance and management have also been criticized for failing to address corruption and unethical practices in the sport. This has led to several scandals and controversies in Bangladesh cricket, including allegations of match-fixing and player selection bias. These issues erode fans’ confidence in the sport and discourage potential investors from investing in cricket in the country.

Solutions for Overcoming Challenges

The following solutions can help address the significant challenges facing Bangladesh cricket and pave the way for the growth and development of cricket in the country:

The government and the private sector should increase their investment in cricket to provide the necessary funding and resources for the development of the sport.

?     Address Corruption in Cricket

The BCB should take a firm stance against corrupt practices in cricket. This includes working with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and other cricketing nations to establish best practices for preventing corruption. The board should also improve its governance and transparency.

?     Enhance Training and Coaching

The BCB should invest in training and coaching programs for young players. This includes identifying and nurturing talent, providing the necessary infrastructure and resources, and working with experienced coaches to develop players’ skills.

Cricket is the most popular sport in Bangladesh, and its success has opened up immense economic opportunities. However, significant challenges of limited resources, corruption, and mismanagement must be addressed for the sport to develop in the country.

Therefore, the government, the private sector, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board must work hand in hand to overcome these problems and seize the available opportunities, ensuring the country reaches its full potential in the cricket world.

Bangladesh script history with momentous Test victory over Pakistan

Bangladesh clinched a thrilling final day victory over Pakistan in the first Test of the series in Rawalpindi.

Bangladesh made history by securing their first-ever Test victory over Pakistan, triumphing by 10 wickets in the opening match of the series.

This landmark win came after 14 encounters with Pakistan, where the Tigers had suffered 12 defeats and managed just one draw. This was Bangladesh's first-ever 10-wicket win in Tests.

Following this victory, India and South Africa are now the only teams that Bangladesh has yet to defeat in Test cricket.

This victory also provided Bangladesh with a significant boost in the ICC World Test Championship standings, as they leapfrogged Pakistan and South Africa to the sixth spot, tied on point percentage with Sri Lanka (40%). As a result of the loss, Pakistan slipped down to eighth place with a 30.56% point percentage.

LATEST WORLD TEST CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS

The match may have had a damp start due to a delayed beginning caused by a wet outfield, but by the fifth day, it had transformed into an action-packed thriller.

Despite only 41 overs being possible on the first day, Bangladesh got off to a strong start, claiming four crucial wickets.

Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel stepped up for Pakistan on Day 2, each scoring a century to rescue their team. Rizwan was especially resilient, crafting an unbeaten 171 in a marathon innings that left him cramping by the day's end. With an eye on forcing a result, Pakistan declared their innings at 448/6.

For Bangladesh, Mushfiqur Rahim (191) and Shadnam Ismail (93) were the standout performers, making Pakistan toil in the field for much of Day 4. Both came agonisingly close to significant milestones but fell just short.

Bangladesh put up a formidable total of 565 runs, securing a 117-run lead. This was their third-highest score in Test cricket, with their top two totals also coming in away matches.

Starting Day 5 at 23/1, Pakistan crumbled, being bowled out for just 146, with only Rizwan offering resistance through a fighting half-century. Bangladesh needed just 30 runs for a historic win, which they achieved in under seven overs without losing a wicket.

'What's happening there?' - Kevin Pietersen questions 'standard' of cricket in Pakistan

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has raised doubts over the “standard” of Pakistan cricket after they lost the first Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi heavily.

Pakistan succumbed to a 10-wicket defeat against Bangladesh, their first loss against the Asia side. The defeat came owing to some questionable selection calls, of which Pakistan fielding an all-pace attack was the most notable.

The loss was demoralising for the hosts on multiple fronts. First, they racked up 448-6 in the first innings and conceded 565, thanks to a 341-ball 191 from Mushfiqur Rahim . The match looked well set for a certain draw, but Pakistan collapsed in the second innings, getting all out for 146. Bangladesh chased down 30 in 6.3 overs effortlessly to script history.

Pietersen weighed in on the home side's lacklustre performance on his X (formerly Twitter) account, questioning what has gone wrong for them. He opined that the standard of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the quality of local players in general were "tremendous" when he played in the competition, which leaves him wondering about the decline.

Pietersen represented the PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators between 2016 and 2018 across 27 matches.

Pietersen not the only ex-cricketer to criticise Pakistan's loss

Pakistan were criticised for the poor display in Rawalpindi, with former cricketer and ex-PCB chair Ramiz Raja being one of the vocal critics . He felt Pakistan’s pace-bowling dominance has been on a decline and lambasted Shan Masood for his captaincy and low batting returns. There has been staunch criticism from other quarters as well, with several former Pakistan players voicing their frustration at the result.

The second and final match of the series will start on August 30, also in Rawalpindi. The match was originally scheduled to be held in Karachi, but construction work in the stadium for the 2025 Champions Trophy led to a change in venue.

Stats: Bangladesh's historic first and a defeat after declaration

1 - This was Bangladesh's first win against Pakistan in 14 Tests. They had lost 12 head-to-head contests - six by an innings margin - and drew one before this match. India and South Africa are now the only opponents they are yet to beat in the longest format.

10 wickets - This is the highest victory margin for Bangladesh in Tests in terms of wickets remaining. Overall, this was their sixth win while chasing, the previous biggest margin being 8 wickets against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in 2022.

1 - This was Pakistan's first 10-wicket defeat in home Tests (including matches in the UAE). They had lost by nine wickets to Sri Lanka in Dubai in 2014, which was their previous biggest defeat margin in terms of wickets remaining.

4 - This was just the fourth instance of Pakistan losing a Test match in which they declared an innings, the first at home in 63 years. It was also the first instance of Bangladesh winning a Test in which their opponent declared an innings.

Pakistan's defeats after declaring an innings in Tests

3 - Of the 26 instances of teams losing a Test after declaring in their first innings, only three have featured declarations with the batting side losing six wickets or fewer. The first was West Indies' 10-wicket win against India at Kingston in 1976 , when the visitors had declared at 306/6d in their first innings with Anshuman Gaekwad and Brijesh Patel being retired hurt. India's second innings was recorded as completed (97 all-out) with five players from the XI being absent hurt.

The second was Australia's epic six-wicket win over England at the Adelaide Oval in 2006/07, courtesy Shane Warne and Michael Hussey's brilliance on the final day. England had declared their first innings at 551/6d.

448/6d is the second highest innings total in a losing cause for Pakistan in home Tests, after 579 all-out against England at the same venue in 2022. It is also the highest score conceded by Bangladesh in a winning cause, well clear of the 374 scored by Zimbabwe in Chattogram in 2014.

9 - Pakistan have now gone without a win in nine straight home Tests (five defeats and four draws), their second longest such streak after 11 (10 draws and a defeat) between February 1969 and March 1975. The 95-run win against South Africa at the same venue in February 2021 was their last Test victory at home.

222 by Mohammad Rizwan (171* & 51) is the highest aggregate for a Pakistan wicketkeeper in a Test match, surpassing 210 by Taslim Arif against Australia in Faisalabad in 1980.

Pakistan wicketkeepers with highest match aggregates in Tests

191 by Mushfiqur Rahim is the second highest score by a Bangladesh batter against Pakistan in Tests, after Tamim Iqbal's 206 at Khulna in 2015. He is the third Bangladesh batter with a Test hundred in Pakistan, after Javed Omar (119) and Habibul Bashar (108) in Peshawar and Karachi respectively in 2003. Mushfiqur now has four of the top-six highest individual score for Bangladesh in Tests, headed by his 219* against Zimbabwe in Mirpur in 2018.

11 Test hundreds for Mushfiqur is the second most for Bangladesh in the format, surpassing Tamim Iqbal's 10. Mominul Haque leads the way with 12 Test tons. RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AP) — Persistent rain washed out the opening day of the second test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Bangladesh leads the two-match series 1-0 after it notched a historic 10-wicket win at the same venue last week when Pakistan was bowled out for an embarrassing 146 in the second innings on the fifth and final day.

Players and team officials stayed in the hotel and umpires called off the play at 12:05 p.m. local time with rain still pouring down and leaving the outfield submerged.

Both teams are in the bottom half of the World Test Championship standings with Bangladesh at No. 7 and Pakistan at No. 8, just above last-place West Indies.

Pakistan dropped rusty fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi and named another left-armer Mir Hamza along with leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed in its 12-man squad.

Afridi, who was playing his first test in eight months, was ineffective and had to wait until Pakistan took the third new ball to claim 2-88 as Bangladesh replied to Pakistan’s 448-6 declared with a strong total of 565.

Abrar was surprisingly released from the first test squad and was asked to play in a four-day game against Bangladesh ‘A’ in Islamabad and Pakistan’s ploy to go with an all-out pace attack in a home test match after 28 years backfired.

In contrast left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan and off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz took seven wickets in between them on a dramatic fifth day to skittle out Pakistan for its lowest-ever total against Bangladesh in 14 test matches.

Bangladesh batters, led by Mushfiqur Rahim’s resilient 191, were also among the runs with Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, Litton Das and Mehidy all scoring meaningful half centuries.
