This is truly a huge resource that should be on your Top 10 best research sites list. Anything from Academia Sinica in Taiwan to Yale University in the U.S. is here and ready to be searched.
• ReferenceDesk.org : Dubbed "The Internet's Best Reference Source," this extremely useful web directory provides everything from business and finance information to federal government resources, scholarship details, links to newspapers and calendars, search engines, and more.
• Ask the Space Expert: NASA's source for space and science research help. Use the video links to listen to questions answered by experts. These are from 2013 through 2015.
• USA.gov : This is where you should start when looking for specific U.S. government information. Learn about the country in general or education, housing, disability services, jobs, taxes, laws, and more.
• Reference.com : Extremely simple to use with a basic layout, this reference website lets you browse by category or search by keywords to research everything from food and health to history, beauty, education, technology, vehicles, art, and more.

How to Find Sources | Scholarly Articles, Books, Etc.

It’s important to know how to find relevant sources when writing a  research paper , literature review , or systematic review .

The types of sources you need will depend on the stage you are at in the research process , but all sources that you use should be credible , up to date, and relevant to your research topic.

There are three main places to look for sources to use in your research:

Research databases

• Your institution’s library
• Other online resources

You can search for scholarly sources online using databases and search engines like Google Scholar . These provide a range of search functions that can help you to find the most relevant sources.

If you are searching for a specific article or book, include the title or the author’s name. Alternatively, if you’re just looking for sources related to your research problem , you can search using keywords. In this case, it’s important to have a clear understanding of the scope of your project and of the most relevant keywords.

Databases can be general (interdisciplinary) or subject-specific.

• You can use subject-specific databases to ensure that the results are relevant to your field.
• When using a general database or search engine, you can still filter results by selecting specific subjects or disciplines.

Google Scholar

To get started, you might also try Google Scholar , an academic search engine that can help you find relevant books and articles. Its “Cited by” function lets you see the number of times a source has been cited. This can tell you something about a source’s credibility and importance to the field.

Boolean operators

Boolean operators can also help to narrow or expand your search.

Boolean operators are words and symbols like AND , OR , and NOT that you can use to include or exclude keywords to refine your results. For example, a search for “Nietzsche NOT nihilism” will provide results that include the word “Nietzsche” but exclude results that contain the word “nihilism.”

Many databases and search engines have an advanced search function that allows you to refine results in a similar way without typing the Boolean operators manually.

The Shifting Landscape of Travel Bookings: Skift Research

Direct bookings surge as travelers prefer supplier websites over OTAs. This means OTAs will need to innovate to stay competitive.

The travel booking landscape is rapidly transforming, with direct bookings on the rise and reshaping the competition. What’s driving this shift? Skift Research explores these pivotal changes in our new report: “Direct Bookings vs. OTAs: Analyzing the Shift in U.S. Travel Booking Trends.”

Direct bookings are on the rise, driven by travelers’ preference for supplier websites over OTAs. This shift highlights the need for OTAs to adapt their strategies to stay competitive.

Travelers are increasingly using OTAs for research but opting to book directly. For instance, while 26% of travelers use OTAs to research flight options, a much larger share – 55% – ultimately books directly on airline websites. This 29 percentage point gap illustrates the “billboard effect,” where OTAs are crucial for initial comparisons but travelers seek perceived reliability, better deals, or additional benefits when booking directly with airlines. This underscores the need for OTAs to refine their value propositions to convert research into actual bookings.

While OTAs achieve Net Promoter Scores (NPS) that are on par with direct bookings and strong repeat usage, there is a notable gap in the effectiveness of their loyalty programs. Many travelers remain indifferent to OTA loyalty programs compared to those offered by hotels and airlines. This indicates that OTAs need to enhance their loyalty offerings to make them more appealing and engaging.

Study to Evaluate THC, CBD Benefits for Dementia-Related Agitation

Pennington Biomedical currently recruiting hospice-eligible dementia patients “LiBBY” research study 

Pennington Biomedical Research Center’s Dr. Jeff Keller is evaluating the potential for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and cannabidiol, or CBD, to reduce the behaviors indicating agitation, distress or anxiety in patients with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. The study is designed for hospice-eligible patients who are either receiving hospice care or who are eligible for hospice, and who are exhibiting agitation concurrently with a diagnosis of dementia. There are currently no FDA-approved medications to treat agitation at the end-of-life stages in dementia patients.  

The “Life’s End Benefits of Cannabidiol and Tetrahydrocannabinol” or LiBBY, study is the first-of-its-kind national study funded by the National Institute of Aging. The placebo-controlled, double-blinded study is designed to help researchers further explore these compounds for their potential to ease the burden of patients and caregivers.  

“The restlessness, anxiety, and distress that frequently accompanies Alzheimer’s and dementia can be frustrating and frightening for both the patient and their caregivers,” said Dr. Keller, who is the director of Institute for Dementia Research & Prevention at Pennington Biomedical and a professor of aging and neurodegeneration. “The LiBBY study intends to explore whether THC and CBD can be safe and effective options for managing agitation in dementia patients. This landmark, multisite study will increase the pace of THC clinical research nationwide, and Pennington Biomedical’s participation makes it much easier to initiate THC research at this facility in the future.” 

Upon joining the study, participants will complete a baseline visit and will be randomly assigned to one of two study groups: one receiving the active study drug, and one receiving a placebo. The active study will last for 12 weeks and will include one screening visit, six in-person visits, and five evaluations by phone.  

Before the study concludes, all participants will have the opportunity to request to continue their participation in the “Open Label Extension” portion of the study. Though participants will not know if they are receiving the study drug or the placebo during the study, all participants will receive the active study drug in the “Open Label Extension” period. 

“Dementia, especially when coupled with agitation, can be frightening for patients and heartbreaking for caregivers, who frequently face burnout. As other studies have shown THC can help in treating post-chemotherapy nausea, the LiBBY study is a practical next step in exploring the benefits of these compounds and offering hope to those facing this difficult challenge,” said Dr. John Kirwan, Executive Director of Pennington Biomedical. “Dr. Keller and his colleagues have worked incredibly diligently to bring this study to Pennington Biomedical. We are proud to have this study here and to have it position the Center for similar studies in the future.” 

Pennington Biomedical is one of 11 research institutions to facilitate the LiBBY study and exploring the use of THC for dementia-related agitation. Pennington Biomedical, Georgetown University Medical Center, the University of Kentucky, and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center are currently recruiting participants.

The research facility is working with hospice care providers in Capital Region and beyond to share the details of this study with patients and their families. Carpenter Health network, a large Baton Rouge-based hospice group, is one of the care providers to help identify patients and caretakers who may be eligible for the study.

"The Carpenter Health Network is proud to join with other late-stage care facilities and networks to share this study with the families we work with daily," said Raoul Manalac, Medical Director at St. Joseph Hospice – Baton Rouge. "Dementia is accompanied by many challenges, with agitation and anxiety among the most frightening and frustrating for patients and families, and there are few options available to provide relief. This innovative study is driven by both the quest for new knowledge, as well as compassion for families dealing with dementia.”

Engineering undergraduate students get early research experience

Dozens of students have participated in the undergraduate research co-op fellowship program.

"Exposing students to research as early and often as possible is important to build the leaders of the next generation," said Gautam Pillay, associate dean of research at the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science. 

The college established the Undergraduate Research Co-op Fellowship Program in the spring of 2021 to expand the opportunities for students to engage in meaningful research in UC labs. The college values the importance of real-world experience for students through the cooperative education (co-op) program. Although most students will spend five semesters working in industry positions for their co-op rotations, students can also choose research positions in corporate, university, or government labs. Many students opt for a research co-op if they are considering a career in research or they plan to attend graduate or medical school.

In the Undergraduate Research Co-op Fellowship Program, students spend a full semester (15 weeks in the fall or spring, or 12 weeks in the summer) working one-on-one with esteemed college faculty members participating in scientific research. 

"The research I've done at UC has been really meaningful," said Nicholas Schoenleb, UC biomedical engineering student and fellowship participant. "There's such a direct connection between what I've learned in class and what I work on in the lab." 

Schoenleb was drawn to UC by the top-ranked co-op program, as he was eager to gain broad engineering experience as an undergraduate student. The college's emphasis on career-readiness was very important to him. Initially, he didn't set out to become a researcher, but he applied for the fellowship program after a recommendation from a mentor and never looked back. 

Now in his last year as an undergraduate, Schoenleb has completed all of his co-op rotations in research and hopes to continue on that path in graduate school after earning his bachelor's degree and master's degree through the Accelerated Engineering Degree Program . On campus, he conducts research under the guidance of Douglas Mast , biomedical engineering professor, on ultrasound-based imaging in a variety of projects.

"I've been doing anything from ablation research with the liver to work with speech biofeedback therapy and recently I finished working with a clinical trial," Schoenleb said. 

"In the trial, Schoenleb was assisting a speech language pathologist to deliver therapy to children that have trouble producing the letter R sound , one of the most common production errors. He shared that this experience felt like a full circle moment for him, because he used to experience the same difficulty when he was a child. 

He has worked extensively on a swallowing study that uses ultrasound technology to monitor swallowing in patients. 

"We just received a grant for the swallowing study and we're going to be starting a full trial for that soon, taking a lot of data," Schoenleb said. "What we're working on is getting ultrasound established as an alternative technique to identify swallowing disorders at the point of care." 

Through this program, students like Schoenleb are able to conduct meaningful scientific research that often ends in peer-reviewed publications, peer-reviewed conference presentations, and other recognitions. The fellowship program offers a unique opportunity for students to be introduced to this research before they are a master's or doctoral student and can enter a graduate program with research experience on their resume.

"Undergraduate research shows the excitement of discovering new things, putting them into application, and benefiting society early on for aspiring students," Pillay said. 

Schoenleb has been involved with the swallowing study since the beginning stages. When he first came on to the project, the data consisted of a few lines of code and a handful of documents outlining the project and its goal. Now, it's thousands of lines of code and hundreds of folders. 

"It's been a great experience to see how a project is developed from early pilot work to intense fully funded work," he said. "It's awesome to see how research really happens." 

As an undergraduate researcher, he had the opportunity to present at the Acoustical Society of America Conference, a highlight of his Bearcat experience thus far. 

Although Schoenleb initially stumbled into research, the work he completed during his first position empowered and excited him to continue. The work he is doing in the lab has a direct connection to what he is learning in class. 

"I've never wondered if I am going to use what I'm learning in class in the real world. There have been times I've taken certain classes because I think they're going to help with my work, and I've also used real-world knowledge to help me in class," he said. "My research has really tied together the academic experience for me."
