By effectively leading the thinking of client firms’ problems as well as motivating them to work long hours to develop solutions to these problems and collaborate with clients on implementing them, these businesspeople prove to have what it takes to be exemplary leaders.

A good leader must certainly inspire others. A leader must be a role model for his followers. Furthermore, he must motivate them whenever possible. Also, in difficult situations, a leader must not lose hope. How can a leader inspire people if he himself is hopeless?

Honesty is another notable quality of a leader. Honesty and Integrity are important to earn the love of followers. Above all, honesty is essential to win the trust of the people. Probably, every Leadership which loses trust is bound to fail. People will not work with full effort due to an immoral leader.

Good communication is a must for a good leader. This is because poor communication means the wrong message to followers. Furthermore, good communication will increase the rate of work. Also, the chances of mistakes by followers will reduce.

Over the last several years, I have had the privilege of participating in or leading teams in various capacities. But I don’t think I ever quite realized how grateful I should be for such opportunities. Someone took a chance on me and allowed me to learn and grow personally and professionally alongside them, as well as gave me independence to pursue my own interests. That helped me make the transition from an inexperienced graduate student to an independent researcher.

I have always felt grateful to my mentors but never quite articulated it out loud. That is one of the issues with academe today: we expect certain things from our principal investigators, and if we are lucky enough to have a great mentor (as I did in graduate school), we should thank them for what they did for us and not take them for granted.

While working in the lab, I knew my place within the team and, as a naive early graduate student, I at first saw my PI as “the boss” who could do no wrong. Then later on, as I grew more confident, I realized that having an opinion (even if it was wrong) was better than not having one. I was lucky enough to be able to discuss issues that were important to me with my Ph.D. mentor, who explained why my views were wrong (which they were most of the time, at least in the beginning) or why my ideas were good when that was the case. I appreciated not only the criticism but also the praise, which can be rare in academe these days.

Looking back, I realize that I had always been grateful for the opportunity to grow in the lab as part of a team, but I never realized how lucky I was to have someone invest so much in my future. I think that we can all do a better job at expressing gratitude for our mentors.

That’s the case especially in academe, but it is also true outside of it. I’ve now had experience being part of a team or leading them at various nonprofit organizations, and I again appreciate how much other people have supported and helped me. I continue to be amazed at the level of confidence they have placed in my ability to perform multiple tasks, which has positively influenced both my personal and professional development in significant ways. I am grateful to everyone who has ever put their trust in me to tackle a project and then stepped away and let me lead it. Having someone have complete confidence in my abilities has been a very powerful motivator for me to lead others in much the same way.

Leading Teams in Multiple Settings

You can find a lot of parallels between running a research lab and leading teams in various other settings, including nonprofits. Drawing upon my own experiences, I offer the following advice for being a good team leader both in academe and outside it.

Foster a common vision . As a team member, what motivates me the most is knowing that I am part of something bigger than myself and that, in some small way, I am contributing towards a greater goal. That also encourages my sense of belonging, which is important when you are part of any organization.

I’ve also come to realize that working toward a common vision is much more motivating to me than my own personal reasons for carrying out a task. In a way, that could possibly be the single most important issue in academe: How would the system change if we all worked together towards the common good instead of focusing on our own individual motivations? Collaborating towards a common vision is something I have tried to impart to any team that I have led -- and will emphasize with those I lead in the future.

Have a plan, schedule and deadline. Most people are busy, and if you want something from them, it is best to let them know well in advance. So give them plenty of notice for meetings or tasks you want them to perform and schedule meetings at a time when everyone can participate. Create a detailed plan so that each person knows what they are supposed to be doing. Perhaps it is just personal preference, but I am much more productive when I know what I need to do, when it’s due and how it fits into the grander vision. Although it takes practice, I do my best to give the volunteers whom I have led on various committees a good sense of those things.

Have a product in mind and work backwards. Knowing what the final product of my work will be (whether it’s a publication, poster or something else) has always been helpful to know ahead of time. That allows a team to work backwards in thinking about how to accomplish the small, gradual tasks leading up to the ultimate goal. When I started graduate school, I mostly looked at the details of my experiments and didn’t think about the broader vision of my work. At the time, I was probably thinking that the most important thing in the world was to publish a paper and graduate with my Ph.D. -- which was quite selfish.

Later on, I realized that my mentor had always looked at the big picture and filled in the details that made the most sense for what we were trying to accomplish, and I trusted in her leadership. Now, after having led teams in various settings, I understand the need to work backwards from the broader vision to the specific details.

Find a mentor and appreciate them. None of us can succeed alone. We must have someone who will be our champion along the way and help us progress down a certain path -- and, in my case, also help us discover what that path is. By having not only a supportive mentor but also someone who will let us explore things on our own, we can discover so much about ourselves along the way.

This type of discovery is not possible without stepping away from our busy lives and taking the time for introspection, and it also requires having someone to allow us to do that. I appreciate the people who trained me in that way, and I try to do the same for others.  

Build a versatile team. As important as it is to be a good leader, you will not be able to achieve much -- or at least not be able to make a lasting, long-term impact -- without a team to support you. Picking a good team can make or break entire organizations because it takes multiple motivated people to succeed. When each member can bring different perspectives and strengths to the table, it often creates the best path to success. For usefull discussions, you may even want to have some members on your team who disagree with you on certain things (but not on the core messages of your organization).

Knowing the personalities, interests, motivations, passions, likes and dislikes of your team members is also very important for making sure that each one feels valued and that you use their strengths in the best ways possible. Understanding someone’s background is crucial to knowing what might motivate them to act for change.

Have a mission and say it often . Even the most motivated people sometimes lose track of the bigger vision and their role within it, which is why having a leader who can articulate the mission repeatedly is vital to the overall success of any group. It's important to remind team members of where they fit in the larger goal of the organization, as well as to show appreciation for their contributions to it.

Be the type of leader you would look up to. As a leader yourself, it is not always easy to stay on task. Having a team of people in whom you have confidence backing you up and doing the work behind the scenes can allow you to take a break and just let things happen sometimes. As a leader make sure to follow up with them, but also trust them to do their job, and they will thank you for it.

You should try to be the embodiment of what you would like to see in a leader. That means having integrity and honesty, keeping your word, learning from everyone and remembering that your role is to serve. You should also learn to delegate and accept criticism, listen more than you talk, trust and value your team members, apologize when you are wrong, and ask for help when you need it. Finally, don’t be afraid to take risks, plan for the long-term, stay humble and true to your grand vision, and articulate that vision early and often.

And again, always be grateful to your current and past mentors. Doing so and leading others by example are crucial elements for the success of any team, whether within academe or in other settings.

How to write a college essay

1. Keep it real. It’s normal to want to make a good impression on the school of your choice, but it’s also important to show who you really are. So just be yourself! Compelling stories might not be perfectly linear or have a happy ending, and that’s OK. It’s best to be authentic instead of telling schools what you think they want to hear.

2. Be reflective . Think about how you’ve changed during high school. How have you grown and improved? What makes you feel ready for college, and how do you hope to contribute to the campus community and society at large?

3. Look to the future. Consider your reasons for attending college. What do you hope to gain from your education? What about college excites you the most, and what would you like to do after you graduate? Answering these questions will not only give colleges insight into the kind of student you’ll be, but it will also give you the personal insight you’ll need to choose the school that’s right for you.

Are you an experienced professional who is ready to share your knowledge with the world? Writing a book is an ideal way to get your expert thoughts distributed to a wider audience. And guess what: Writing a book doesn’t have to be complicated!

It's common for professionals just starting the book-writing process to have questions like, "Will I have enough content to fill a book?" or "Will anyone even want to read this?" But if you’re good at what you do and have led by example, people will want to read about how you did it. Size doesn’t matter; whether your book is 1,000 pages or 100 pages, the main goal of writing a thought leader book is to open and investigate a known problem or situation and close it in a meaningful way, whether you're offering solutions or providing new perspectives. And if you feel like you don't have enough content, you can even invite guest authors to share their knowledge, as well.

With that in mind, here is my six-step, sure-fire process to help get you from idea to printed copy.

1. Create the storyboard.

Decide what angle you are going with. Is your book going to be a first-person biography? A technical step-by-step guide? An anthology with shared opinions? A workbook with actionable lessons? Think about your audience and what format they would want to consume their content in. Then, create a draft contents page, outlining your chapters and giving a brief description of what each chapter entails. I like to refer to this as the "messy draft."

2.Write your book.

Now that you are clear about each chapter’s inclusion, delve into more detail. Don’t get too pedantic about spelling or grammar—just allow the literature to flow. Keep the language appropriate for the topic and don’t overwrite. People typically want to read about your expert advice without too much additional fluff, so get straight to the point.

If you're having trouble getting your thoughts down on paper (or computer), a great tip my mentor shared with me for when you are faced with writer’s block is to record yourself talking about the subject, as if you were in a conversation with someone, and then transcribe it.

3. Get editing.

It's often best to leave this to professionals with fresh eyes. By this time, you will likely have read your book over a hundred times, so you'll be reading what you are anticipating the words to say. Appointing a copywriter to your project can allow more opportunities for errors to be rectified.

It’s crucial to be patient ; this is a long process. Rushing this part may lead to print errors. Trust me, that’s not a pleasant experience for anyone.

4. Time to format your book.

It’s time to bring it all together. Create a draft layout for the text, images and pagination. Ensure the flow of the content stays consistent. Remember to make it easy to consume, visually appealing and not too cluttered—space is good! Stay focused on the readers' experience.

5. Find your style.

Decide on a style that suits your story and your target audience. Create a moodboard as inspiration for your graphic designer to produce your book cover options. It’s always a good idea to have alternative covers to choose from. Your graphic designer is also responsible for collating the chapters with your draft format to prepare your book for print.

6. Okay, you’re ready to print.

Do a mock-up print before you sign off on your bulk print. This will be your final chance to make any changes. I like to read mine out loud very slowly, word for word. You can also send it to a few people to get more fresh eyes on it.

Tips For Productive Writing

You are embarking on an exciting, yet challenging, journey to share your business expertise with other professionals. Hold yourself accountable and establish a writing schedule. Unless you are hibernating or indulging in a writer’s retreat, the best way to maintain realistic goals and nurture a relationship with writing in everyday life is to take into account your pre-existing schedule.

I recommend you create word count goals based on weekly or monthly sessions. Your word count will be determined by deadlines, your level of authorship and your lifestyle requirements. It's also important to create a distraction-free writing space, meaning no social media, phone, emails or even people (especially if you have kids).

Rewarding yourself for meeting goals is a great way to keep your interest in the project. And don't be too hard on yourself; it’s okay if you miss one or two sessions here or there because life got in the way. But don’t lose sight of the end goal.

The beauty about creating a book (and a thought I often share with authors) is that having writing experience isn’t essential. Many established authors started with no writing experience. Unlike an academic university essay, you get to write in your tone, your style and with your own opinion. If writing a book has been on your bucket list but you’re feeling hesitant or don’t know where to start, I recommend you just start! Write as if you were having a conversation with someone. You will be amazed by how the words will just start to flow.

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the leadership paradigm has undergone a significant transformation, shifting from traditional hierarchical structures to more collaborative and horizontal models. This shift emphasizes team leadership and innovation as key drivers of success.

To be a good team leader, besides management skills, one must focus on developing key leadership skills, such as building trust, ensuring clear communication, showing empathy, maintaining integrity, and even demonstrating resilience.

Furthermore, emotional intelligence is essential in creating a positive work environment, ensuring team members remain engaged, motivated, and aligned with organizational goals. This is especially important for new leaders.

In this article, we will delve into these traits and provide practical tips for developing the skills necessary to become a successful team leader.

Leadership paradigm shift

The “from boss to a team leader” paradigm shift, “team of teams” approach and a “flat” (horizontal rather than vertical) leadership model explain the success of many businesses today.

For example, Microsoft earned $77.17 billion, and Google (Alphabet Inc.) $75.15 billion in 2023, emphasizing team leadership and innovations. Respectively, IBM ($8.29 billion net income), Netflix ($4.98 billion), and Salesforce ($4.09 billion) continued to be successful in their industries by fostering team leadership.

Who are the people behind these companies? What do they all have in common?

Satya Nadella , CEO of Microsoft, is well known for his effective leadership skills by introducing a "growth mindset" among team members. Sundar Pichai , CEO of Google, is devoted to empowering teams. Arvind Krishna , CEO of IBM, embraced the "team of teams" agile concept. Reed Hastings , co-founder and executive chairman of Netflix, insists on decisions being made by teams. Finally, Marc Benioff , CEO of Salesforce, is known for his emphasis on teamwork and collaboration.

All of them are masters of team leadership .

This raises a question: what are the traits of a good team leader? What skills or habits define a great leader ?

Many authors (George Orwell, for example, in his ‘1984’ classic, or Robert Greene in his ‘48 Laws of Power’ (see the “ 12 Best Books On Power ” summary in our Headway app) try to find the answers to these and similar questions focusing on the problem of power.

However, in this blog article, we differentiate “power” from “team leadership” to discover the key traits and skills of a good team leader and resources for professional development in leadership.

Manager vs. team leader

A great leader is the one who has followers. If nobody follows, can a person truly be a leader? It’s about more than leadership style.

So, let us firstly distinguish a “manager” from a leader.

In this book ‘The Practice of Management’ (1954), Peter Drucker pointed out that “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.”

Referred to as the "father of modern management," in ‘ The Effective Executive: The Definitive Guide to Getting the Right Things DONE ,’ he gives advice on improving personal managerial style.

In practice, a manager (or a boss) often presents a pre-made decision to the “subordinates” to execute it. The manager controls the process and plays a formal leadership role.

However, a good manager may have sincere respect from the team members (employees) regardless of the executive role. And yes, a manager can be a great leader.

Normally, teamwork planning, control, and decision-making are up to the manager. Others simply implement what the boss says.

To define a great leader, a good question to ask is: 'Will team members continue to respect their managers or team leads even after they are no longer in a position of authority?”

In contrast to “managing people” (telling them what to do), a team lead manages processes, creates a healthy environment for productive teamwork, and ensures coordination to deliver value.

Scott Tannenbaum and Eduardo Salas explain the seven drivers of effective teams in their book ‘ Teams That Work ,’ emphasizing that “shared leadership” is the future of successful teams.

The difference betwen a manager and a leader is crucial to grasp for those who have just taken on a new role of project manager, team lead, or a similar position.

In her book ‘How to Get On with Anyone ,’ Catherine Stothart quotes Maya Angelou, who said:

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Scott Jeffrey, author of ‘ Management Mess to Leadership Success ,’ ensures that being a great leader is not an innate talent, it’s a product of hard work and unwavering dedication. The following quote by Brandon Sanderson inspired him:

“A man can only lead when others accept him as their leader, and he has only as much authority as his subjects give to him. All of the brilliant ideas in the world cannot save your kingdom if no one will listen to them.”

Te am lead as a coach

The team leader’s role has a lot to do with team building. We can compare it to the role of a football team coach who fosters communication, understanding (of tasks, goals, and ideas), engagement, initiative, motivation, and passion to achieve a goal.

One of the reasons the Ukrainian football team did not advance to the European championship in 2024 was the new coach. Serhii Rebrov, a highly respected world-class professional, failed to unify team members, each an individual football star.

It is worth noting that Mr. Rebrov was honest enough to admit his failure and pass the torch. His ability to receive constructive feedback and readiness for open communication only proved he was truly a great leader. Though he failed as a manager, how he handled the crisis helped him build trust and open doors for new opportunities.

In contrast, in 1986, Valeriy Lobanovskiy led Dynamo Kyiv to victory in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup by pursuing strong team cohesion and discipline, emphasizing collective play over individual brilliance.

Those of us who strive for leadership development can learn from both of these examples.

Now, let us look at a few characteristics of a good team leader.

Essential traits of a good team leader

A good team leader is not only trustworthy, but also trusting . They treat their team members as mature adults capable of finding a solution on their own. A mature leader builds mature teams, and mature self-managing teams deliver significant results.

This is the opposite of bossy-style management, with one person giving orders to others, as if they are helpless. Authoritarian style leadership deprives teams of autonomy, creativity, or initiative. This may lead to a loss, considering competitive high pace teams pursuing an agile approach.

Frequent interference with the team’s operational work (micro-management) demotivates employees and limits growth. Such practices signal a lack of trust. In such cases, a person can possess a formal leadership position and be a bad team leader.

Trustworthiness is the first characteristic of a good team leader because all the following skills and qualities, such as communication, empathy, integrity, and resilience, will flourish where trust is.

2. Clear communication

Poor communication skills create problems. Imagine a startup urgently needing financial resources to scale up a product or a service. How will investors know about the opportunity if everyone is silent about it? 

Respectively, if a team does not understand the mission and vision of the whole organization, team goals, or their leader’s expectations, how can it be productive?

To achieve effective communication, the team leader must be able to articulate the big picture, explain their ideas to team members, and be open to feedback.

The best leaders appreciate follow-up and “retrospectives” — the opportunity to discuss the entire team’s achievements, failures, valuable insights or new skills gained in the process, summarize milestones, re-evaluate metrics, and discover team needs and how to increase team performance.

The Indeed experts add that besides problem-solving, active listening and the art of facilitating an open dialogue are equally important. Leaders who excel in communication build trust, encourage a collaborative work environment, and achieve more.

In many cases, a team lead serves as a bridge between the team and stakeholders (executives, managers, board members, and product owners).

Empathy involves recognizing and addressing the emotional needs of team members. A leader who shows empathy builds stronger relationships, improves morale, and creates a supportive work environment.

Self-awareness is one of the key competencies a good team leader must develop.

In her article, ‘What it Means to be a Great Team Leader and How to Become One,’ Bethany Klynn, PhD emphasizes emotional intelligence as a key skill of every great leader:

“Great team leaders must have emotional intelligence to build healthy working relationships.”

Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.

Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.

Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.

Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.

He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.

He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.”

Tim Walz's military record: What to know about potential VP's National Guard service

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, choosing a progressive yet plain-spoken VP candidate from America’s heartland to help her win over rural, white voters.

“I’m pleased to share that I’ve made my decision: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will join our campaign as my running mate,” Harris said via text to supporters. “Tim is a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families. I know that he will bring that same principled leadership to our campaign, and to the office of the vice president.”

We look at Walz, a 60-year-old U.S. Army National Guard veteran, and his military career over the years.

How long was Walz in the military?

Walz served in the military for 24 years, enlisting in the Nebraska National Guard at 17 in 1981 and then transferring to the Minnesota National Guard in 1996. He retired in 2005 to begin his successful run for the U.S. House, representing Minnesota as command sergeant major, among the highest ranks for enlisted soldiers. His battalion went on to deploy to Iraq shortly after Walz's retirement.

Walz specialized in heavy artillery and had proficiency ribbons in sharpshooting and hand grenades.

But during the 21 years that Walz spent working with large artillery pieces, he suffered hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears, Minnesota Public Radio reported. He was allowed to continue his service after undergoing surgery, which partially resolved his hearing loss.

Where did Walz serve, and what did he do in the National Guard?

During his service, Walz responded to natural disasters, including floods and tornadoes in Minnesota and Nebraska, and was deployed overseas for months at a time, according to MPR.

In 2003, he was sent to Italy, where he served with the European Security Force to support the war in Afghanistan. He was also stationed in Norway for joint training with other NATO militaries.

Walz told MPR that he reenlisted in the National Guard after the September 11 attacks but never saw active combat in his years in the military.

Stars and Stripes reported in 2020 that Walz credited his Army experience with helping him steer Minnesota through the COVID-19 pandemic as governor.

As governor of Minnesota, Walz is commander in chief of the 13,000-soldier Minnesota National Guard. “I’m certainly proud of my military service, but it’s one piece of me,” he told Minnesota Public Radio in 2018. “It doesn’t define me.”
