PHD Flopper Perma Perk

Guest

Hello Friends ,

I have been acquiring many different Perma Perks. This time something very useful came into my grasps. Iv been continuously overcoming fall damage from jumping off the roofs. Also falling through holes and such.

When Landing

I figured it out eventually in a later game. Here you will see Me as Russman diving to the ground.

We got PHD Flopper !

In conclusion we now have our PHD Flopper! It is so useful in this map. You can take out massive amounts of zombies by jumping off the rooftop or many staircases.

All I did was survive fall damage at least a couple games before achieving this Perma Perk. Hope this was as exciting for you as it was for me!

I got about 4/5 times in my last game.

I presume it's lost if you don't dolphin dive in a certain amount of jumps. That's how I lost it anyway.

Could be. Its pretty neat though.

I often hear the sound for losing it when I fall from a high place,

Basically I lose it the same way I got it but I don't know if that is the only way to lose it

Maybe Treyarch is making us work for it lol.

TheBSZombie

Kind of late but here is how you gain it and how you lose it. Also its beneifits

How to get: Take fall damage multiple times. You do not have to survive. If by chance the last time you take fall damage you actually die, you can still receive it.

How to lose: take fall damage. A tiny, tiny bit of damage is okay. When all your guy says is that umph sound. But if your screen goes red you will lose it.

Benefits: Explosive dolphin dives, no splash damage from explosives, (You still take fall damage but that can be negated by dolphin diving, but beware you can't dolphin dive with the new wonder weapon.)

That's why they are called "Persistent Perks" not "Perma Perks", because you have to be persistent in keeping the perk.

Example 1. - You gain PHD Flopper by falling from a certain height that causes damage (5 or 6 times or whatever), you then have to use the ability of that perk when falling (Dolphin Diving) to keep the perk. So if you take fall damage without dolphin diving, you will loose it. You have to be persistent.

Example 2. - Cash Back. If you go to prone in front of the perk machines (every time) after you have drunk a perk, you will gain the cashback perk. This refunds a portion of your money spent. In World at War, if you went prone infront of the perk machines you would gain 25 points. That's probably why they have made it like this in BOII. To keep it, every perk you drink you have to go to prone, if you don't, you will loose it.

"Persistent Perks" not "Perma Perks"

Am I the only one who feels they are trying to get rid of this perk? It wasn't in Transit, Die Rise, Mob of the Dead, and it's in Buried but not the actual perk.

I only recall ever seeing it in the game on Grief Cell Block. Which honestly... I don't see used much there.

I like it like this. It's free Flopper lol. If you're careful, you'll never lose it. But even if you do, it's extremely easy to get back.

The Clay Bird

yeah and it's used ALL the time in grief

They need to get rid of persistent perks. Honestly now I kinda hate them. It seems like they're too easy to get and the effects are kinda screwy and how to lose it and gain some of them are stupid. I like the idea don't get me wrong, it's just ridiculous how it escalated to the point in zombies. I like the Quick Revive, Steel Barricades, and the Box ones. The rest are just meh.

I like the PHD Flopper one. But everyone can get it playing Buried even by accident. I wish I could hold a grenade in my hand and kill zombies without dying... but I guess we'll have to wait for the real perk to come back.

Tasty Applesauce

I love all these new little upgrades you can get, it just adds to the fun.

They're not necessary but they make it that much more enjoyable when you have them.

The way I see it, them putting PhD in as a persistent perk was their way of making up for trolling us 2 maps in a row with it. Now we don't have to pay for it and its extremely easy to get, still does everything the regular perk does except allow you to hold a grenade in your hand until it explodes which is fine by me because I never did that in the old one anyways haha. Just being able to have an explosive dolphin dive again is enough for me, and the level has a lot of parkour spots and rooftops to just have a blast with it.

This game has evolved so much from the simple WaW games its amazing to see how far they've come. I seriously think we could be seeing a standalone CoD Zombies game in the near future. I hope so anyways :P

Sorry to be the debbie downer, but I'm actually kinda disappointed that they brought PHD back. Much of the community (besides the 10 year olds at callofduty.com) was finally starting to accept that it wasn't coming back, and many people including me finally realized how ridiculously OP it was. I mean seriously, Ascension wasn't a fun map for the reason that the WHOLE map besides the PHD area was rendered useless because of how easy it was to train and flop there. Not to mention the ridiculously cheap M&S+PHD strategy everyone used. At least this time it's not as easy to get, it kind of seems to come and go spontaneously.

ThrowAmonkeyBomb

I personally am glad that they brought it back, havent been able to use it yet though (ps3 owner). However,I dont mind not having it,in fact I kinda prefer M & S without PHD ;)

Im just pissed that they brought it back and didn't give you the chance to get it on previous maps. I thought that was pure BS.

Incoming expletives.

What the fuck? Cheap? The thundergun was cheap. The wave gun was cheap. The shrink gu was cheap. How in bloody hell was giving the few guys smart enough to get a gun that protective services expired at round 35-40 cheap? Especially if your luck was like some people (me) who never got those guns, ever. Not to mention I loved explosives. Pack a punched law, china beach, scavenger ray gun. No way dude. Flopper was the most fun perk ever. They should have brought it back in bo2 for the sole reason that they finally got rid of the real problems (thunderguns, wave guns, shrink guns). Think about it, anyone ever seen ANYBODY in bo2 keep and use the RPG, war machine? NOPE.

JakeDuck

Think about it, anyone ever seen ANYBODY in bo2 keep and use the RPG, war machine? NOPE.

Have you ever seen anyone keep the Law, China Lake, or Panzershrek? Nope. It has nothing to do with PhD, they are just bad guns.

I think Treyarch should remove the persistent upgrade, and bring back the actual perk. I like be challenge of getting every perk in one game, and seeing the symbol for it on the HUD. It makes no sense to keep it away from us for so long then make it so easy to obtain later.

I would keep the law in moon.

Yea, I have ._. Tons of guys I used to play with in bo1 used to rock with pack a punched laws, mustang and sally and ray guns past round 35 on every map with flopper, including myself. The pack a punched law was super effective at taking out waves of zombies even on round 40 ._. Idk about panzershrek because I only started on bo1 not w@w

Black Ops 2 Zombies Guide: PhD Flopper Permaperk

Here’s how to get the PhD Flopper permaperk in the new Zombies map, Buried.

PhD Flopper is a permaperk that can only be attained in the new Zombies map for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Buried. As a hidden permaperk, the only way to get it is to jump from a certain distance and take fall damage. It’s a recreation of the sort of perk that you’d pick up at the Perk-a-Cola dispenser.

Watch the video if you want to find out how to get the PhD Flopper. You’ll notice a green flash when you take fall damage.

As you may have already known, Buried is the new Zombies map that comes in the Vengeance DLC pack. You can take a look at the map, along with gameplay footage here .

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Vengeance is out today on the Xbox 360. It’ll be a month before it comes out on the PC and PlayStation 3 due to an exclusivity deal between Activision and Microsoft.

black ops 2 buried zombies phd flopper perk guide

The Black Ops 2 Buried Zombie s will show you how to get PHD Flopper Perk tutorial guide in which it will take you step by step to guide you where you can find this perk. The PHD Flopper Perk is great to be used in the mansion as it provides you with a shield so you won’t take a lot of damage and allows you to continually advance through the levels of the game.

The Perk-a-Cola costs 2000 points and it has a dark blue and purple color scheme. The color of this perk is purple, and the icon is a nuclear symbol. PhD Flopper completely negates self-inflicted damage; however, the player will still groan and suffer temporary movement reduction when falling down from an elevated area. Another feature of this perk is that when players dive-to-prone from a height from which they would normally take damage, a 7.5 meter radius explosion is created upon landing.

PhD Flopper is a Perk-a-Cola featured in Zombies. It was introduced along with Stamin-Up in the map Ascension and returns in Call of the Dead, Shangri-La, Moon and Cell Block. PhD Flopper also makes an appearence as an unobtainable Easter Egg on the maps Die Rise and Mob of the Dead.

Persistent Upgrades

The subject of this article appeared in Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Persistent Upgrades , commonly referred as " Perma-Perks ", are unlockable upgrades that the player can gain through unique methods in Call of Duty: Black Ops II . These upgrades only take effect and can be acquired on the maps Green Run , Great Leap Forward , and Resolution 1295 (only present on the major modes TranZit , Die Rise , and Buried and not present in any Survival , Grief , and Turned modes). The player can have multiple upgrades at once (although some may cancel/interfere with others), and they carry over to different game sessions and maps. They can also easily be lost, usually if the player does not make use of the upgrade. Some of these imitate Perk-a-Colas, while others imitate Power-Ups.

When an upgrade is obtained, a green haze, similar to picking up a Power-Up , appears near the player, and the player's character will say a line about it. Losing one will result in a faint eerie sound.

Persistent Upgrades can't be obtained nor will they be affected when playing in Local or LAN Party.

Quick Revive [ ]

The Quick Revive upgrade, doubles the speed which players revive downed teammates. This can be combined with Quick Revive Perk-a-Cola making revives four times faster.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must finish 17 revives in one game.

To lose the upgrade, the player must fail to revive a player partway through the process.

Juggernog [ ]

The Juggernog upgrade grants the player 90 additional health, bringing their overall health to 190. When combined with the Juggernog Perk-a-Cola , the player can reach 340 health.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must fully die without Quick Revive , three times, before round 3

To lose the upgrade, the player must reach round 15. Even after losing the upgrade, the 90 health bonus will continue to be in effect until the player takes a down.

Headshot Damage [ ]

The Headshot Damage upgrade doubles the player's headshot damage multiplier. When active, all zombies killed will have the Insta-Kill 's decapitation effect, even if killed without a headshot.

To obtain the upgrade, the player needs 5 collateral headshots multi-kills. Getting 2 or more headshot kills with one bullet counts as one collateral headshots multi-kill.

To lose the upgrade, the player must get 25 non-headshot zombie kills. Getting one collateral headshots multi-kill will reset this counter back to zero.

Tombstone [ ]

The player can earn the Tombstone upgrade which will remove only the last perk acquired after being revived. Quick Revive will always be lost first, even on Co-Op.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must purchase a perk to fill the 4th perk slot on rounds 6 or lower, on three separate matches.

To lose the upgrade, the player must either: purchase a perk on the same round and match on which they have gained the upgrade, or purchase a perk on the same round on which they have joined the match if the upgrade was obtained on a different match. The Time Bomb from Buried can be utilised to achieve this, by activating it to return to either the round on which the player has joined or obtained the upgrade, or a lower round. The upgrade cannot be lost on round 1.

Steel Barriers [ ]

The Steel Barriers upgrade will have the player use steel boards in place of wooden ones when repairing barriers.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must rebuild 74 boards on rounds 10 or higher without the help of the Carpenter power-up.

To lose the upgrade, the player must pass a round without rebuilding any boards.

Steel Carpenter [ ]

The player can earn the Steel Carpenter upgrade which makes the Carpenter power-up place steel boards instead of wooden ones. These have a different appearance, being "fresher." Zombies take double the time ripping off steel boards.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must pick up a Carpenter power-up and proceed to kill a zombie in a window during the Carpenter period.

To lose the upgrade, the player must pick up a Carpenter power-up and fail to kill a zombie in a window during the Carpenter period.

Insta-Kill Pro [ ]

The player can earn an upgrade to the Insta-Kill power-up which lasts 18 seconds during a regular Insta-Kill period and grants the player with the ability to kill zombies just by touching them, although it only gives the player 50 points per kill.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must pick up an Insta-Kill power-up and not kill any enemies for two Insta-Kill periods in a row.

To lose the upgrade, the player must take a hit from a zombie during an Insta-Kill period.

Ray Gun Wall-Buy [ ]

The player can earn the Ray Gun Wall-Buy upgrade which will allow the player to purchase the Ray Gun in place of the Olympia wall-buy. The costs of purchasing the Ray Gun and its ammo remain the same as the costs for the Olympia. While the upgrade is active, the player cannot obtain the Olympia from purchasing from the wall-buy.

Note: there are glitches regarding this upgrade, as follows:

  • Upon obtaining the upgrade while not having the Olympia, the player will receive a non-upgraded Ray Gun for 500 points, regardless of whether it is already in the player's inventory or not.
  • While having the upgrade active, and either the kill streak be less than 5 or having ever reached a round greater than 10 on the major modes (both explained below in how to obtain the upgrade); then—upon attempting to purchase the Ray Gun off the wall-buy while not having the Olympia—the player will receive a non-upgraded Ray Gun for 500 points, regardless of whether it is already in the player's inventory or not.
  • While having: the upgrade inactive, the kill streak be greater than or equal to 5, and having never reached a round greater than 10 on the major modes; then—attempting to purchase ammo for the Olympia off the wall-buy while having the Olympia and/or its upgraded version and the Ray Gun and/or its upgraded version in the inventory—will result in refilling ammo for the Ray Gun using the cost of the Olympia. This means that the player is able to refill an upgraded Ray Gun's ammo for the price of 250 points instead of 4500 points while having a non-upgraded Olympia in the inventory, as well as being able to refill a non-upgraded Ray Gun for the price of 4500 points instead of 250 while having an upgraded Olympia in the inventory.

To obtain this, the player must get a zombies kill streak of at least 5 kills and then purchase the Olympia. None of the kills may be headshot kills, melee kills, or kills preceded by a barrier repair; as these actions reset the kill streak. The player must never have reached a round greater than 10 on the major modes (TranZit, Die Rise, Mob of the Dead , Buried, Origins ), as this will prevent the kills from counting towards the kill streak.

To lose this, the player must reach round 10 or higher on any of the major Victis modes (TranZit, Die Rise, Buried).

This upgrade is available in offline matches only on the TranZit and Die Rise modes, though it is limited. On offline, the upgrade does not save to the player's profile. Therefore, the player must meet the requirements every time they would like to purchase the Ray Gun off the wall-buy. The glitches mentioned with the exception of the 2nd one still apply, as the 2nd one requires having the upgrade be registered to the player's profile as active.

Flopper [ ]

This is exclusively in Buried .

The player can earn the Flopper upgrade which grants the ability to create an explosion from "dolphin diving" and become immune to most explosive/splash damage. Unlike PhD Flopper , the player can still die from over-cooked grenades and is not immune to fall damage, unless they are diving.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must take at least 30 damage from a fall 6 times.

To lose the upgrade, the player must take at least 50 damage from a fall once.

There are several Flopper bugs the player can use to their advantage:

  • Holding out a Claymore while diving will greatly increase explosion damage.
  • Holding a sniper while diving and having the Sniper Points upgrade active will grant the player the 300 point bonus from the Sniper Points upgrade on all zombies killed, despite them not being actual sniper kills.

Better Box [ ]

The player can earn Better Box upgrade which will change the weapon pool of the Mystery Box. When the player spins the Mystery Box while having the upgrade, they may pull a gun from the Better Box upgraded weapon pool or the regular weapon pool. The game will keep a counter of how many times the player has pulled from the upgraded pool. This number will determine the chance that the next box hit will use the upgraded pool, as follows:

  • 0 pulls: 100%
  • 1 pull: 60%
  • 2 pulls: 0%

When the player rolls on 0% or misses the 60% chance, they will receive a weapon from the regular weapon pool, and the counter will reset.

Better Box Upgraded Weapon Pools
TranZit Die Rise Buried
Ballistic Knife Ballistic Knife
Monkey Bombs Monkey Bombs
Galil Galil
HAMR HAMR
Ray Gun Ray Gun
Executioner
RPD

To obtain the upgrade, the player must accept 5 items in a row from the Mystery Box before round 10. Having the box move does not reset this counter.

To lose the upgrade, the player must reach round 10 or higher. For the rest of the match, the upgrade cannot be obtained once lost.

Cash Back [ ]

The player can earn the Cash Back upgrade which grants a refund of 1000 points (500-point profit if buying Quick Revive on solo) on the purchase of any perk. This is not affected by Double Points .

To obtain the upgrade, the player must first purchase 50 perks. Thereafter, the player must go prone within 2.5 seconds after the perk logo has appeared on the screen after purchasing a perk, for 15 perk purchases.

To lose the upgrade, the player must fail to go prone within 2.5 second after the perk logo has appeared on the screen after purchasing a perk.

Half-Off [ ]

The player can earn a 50% discount on all items during a Double Points period. This can be stacked with the effects of Fire Sale , which will discount the price of the Mystery Box all the way to just five points per weapon.

Additionally, the Mystery Box can be discounted by 75% off during a Double Points period if the player’s points are less than 950 points (original price) and greater than or equal to 475 points (half price), which will result in the Mystery Box’s price to cost 237 points. The 75% discount on the Mystery Box also applies to its price during Fire Sale, in which if the player’s points are less than 10 points and greater or equal to 5 points, the cost of the Mystery Box will go down to 2 points.

Furthermore, the amount which a Ghost from the map Buried can steal during a Double Points period will be reduced as follows:

  • If the player’s points are greater or equal to 2000 points: 1000 points will be taken away instead of the usual 2000 points.
  • If the player’s points are less than 2000 points and greater than zero: half (50%) of the player’s points will be taken away. That is until the points reach 1 point which the Ghost cannot steal during the Double Points period, which makes the player unaffected by Ghosts.

To obtain this, the player must pick up a Double Points power-up and proceed to gain a net profit of 2500 points or higher during the Double Points period. This means that the result of the gained points minus the points spent during a Double Points period must be greater than or equal to 2500 points.

Note: bank withdrawals do not contribute towards the net profit.

To lose this, the player must pick up a Double Points power-up and proceed to gain points during the Double Points period.

Sniper Points [ ]

The player can earn an extra 300 points per kill with a sniper rifle. The extra 300 points is not affected by Double Points . This can be stacked with the Flopper upgrade which also count as sniper kills just by creating the explosion given from the upgrade only if the player is holding out their sniper rifle.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must score 5 sniper kills distanced at least 800 units away from them in one round.

To lose the upgrade, the player must miss three sniper shots in a row.

Pistol Points [ ]

The player can earn the Pistol Points upgrade which doubles all points gained from pistol bullets.

To obtain the upgrade, the player must kill a zombie while having a 25% or less shooting accuracy and at least 8 kills.

To lose the upgrade, the player must kill a zombie while having a higher than 25% shooting accuracy.

Confirmed. What I just did was dive to prone off the stairs twice and I got the perma perk. (I've been using a ray gun for a while not sure if that matters)

9 Expert-Approved Tips For Getting Rid Of Groundhogs

Here’s how to keep groundhogs away from your home and garden.

Identifying Groundhogs

Whether you call them woodchucks, whistle pigs, ground pigs, or groundhogs, these large ground squirrels can be a real nuisance in your yard and garden. “Groundhogs eat whatever is available and most nutritious,” says Sheldon Owen, PhD, wildlife extension specialist at West Virginia University . “They consume large quantities of herbaceous vegetation, especially fruits and vegetables. But they’ll also eat clover, bark, and landscape plants.”

Groundhogs live in an extensive underground system. “They are fantastic burrowers,” says Wesley Anderson, PhD, assistant professor at Auburn University and wildlife extension specialist at the Alabama Coop Extension System . “Their burrows can cause infrastructure issues when they dig under a shed, deck, patio, or sidewalk. The holes also can be a risk to people or livestock that may fall in and break a leg.”

Once found only in the Upper and Mid-South, groundhogs have expanded their range in recent years as far south as central Alabama and northern Mississippi. “They’re often mistaken for beavers or nutria by homeowners who haven’t seen one before,” says Anderson.

Groundhogs are large rodents , weighing up to about 14 pounds and measuring up to 2 feet long. They have gray-brown or gray-red fur on stout bodies, short legs, clawed feet, and a small brushy tail. Like all rodents, they have large incisors

Groundhogs prefer to live near pastures, along the edges of woods, along roadsides, near undeveloped areas of neighborhoods, or under sheds or structures. Their home range is anywhere from a ½ acre to 2.5 acres, depending on competition from others and the availability of food, says Owen.

You may see the main entrances to their burrows, which are 10 to 12-inches in diameter. The burrow systems may reach 30 feet in length with multiple entrances, says Owen. When these stocky-looking animals are startled, they make a loud whistling noise (thus one of their common names!) before diving into the nearest hole.

Active during the day, groundhogs rarely travel far from a protective burrow to forage and dine. If you see a woodchuck on your property, they probably live nearby, says Anderson. They’re also not likely to leave any time soon if the eating is good in your yard.

Whether or not you believe groundhogs can predict spring’s arrival (they’re actually not very good at it, with one study finding they have about a 50 percent success rate!), these voracious rodents can take a toll on your garden in a hurry. Here’s how to discourage them from making your garden an all-you-can-eat buffet:

  • Identify the culprit . Set up a game cam if you haven’t seen a woodchuck and aren’t sure what’s causing the damage, says Anderson.
  • Fence your garden. This is the gold standard for keeping woodchucks out, says Owen. They are excellent climbers and diggers, so your fence must be 3 feet tall, with a 9 to 12-inch section bent over at the top away in an L-shape facing away from the garden and 12 inches buried underground or a section bent outward at the bottom to discourage digging. Use 2-inch woven wire to prevent young woodchucks from squeezing through.
  • Consider an electric wire. A single strand of electrified wire fencing (it’s enough to discourage them but not hurt them) is another good option set at 4 to 5 inches above ground, says Anderson.
  • Try repellents. “They have questionable effectiveness,” says Owen. “But it doesn’t hurt to try them. Just don’t rely on them.”
  • Use 2-inch woven wire fence to screen off access under porches and decks. If you’re having issues with groundhogs burrowing under structures, you can attempt to block access to the area with fencing or cinder blocks, says Owen. Just make sure the animal isn’t under there.
  • Consider using scare devices, such as a motion-activated garden sprayer, which shoots the animal with a burst of water. But you’ll need to keep moving it because once a woodchuck figures out there’s nothing to fear, it will ignore it, says Anderson.
  • Forget about sonic devices, essential oils, pet waste, and human hair. They have not been shown to be effective, says Owen.
  • Do not trap and release groundhogs elsewhere. It is illegal in most states, and it’s not humane because the animals often die due to lack of resources or stress, says Anderson.
  • For pesky groundhogs, you may need to hire a nuisance wildlife specialist for removal.

Groundhogs do carry parasites, such as fleas and ticks . Like all mammals, they also are susceptible to rabies. In addition, although they startle easily and would rather flee than fight, they will defend themselves if cornered. “They have large incisors and strong claws that are used for digging so they can seriously injure a dog by biting and scratching,” says Owen.

Groundhogs are one of the largest mammals that hibernate every year. In late summer and early fall, groundhogs start chowing down even more vigorously to prepare themselves for hibernation , when a groundhog will lose up to 30 percent of its body weight. By late fall, they enter their burrows, and their metabolism slows. They survive winter on their fat reserves, awakening in February or March when it’s time for mating season, says Anderson.

Mesmerizing animation shows Earth's tectonic plates moving from 1.8 billion years ago to today

It's the first time Earth's geologic record — information found inside rocks — has been used to create an animation of this kind.

An aerial view of a road that travels along a rift in the landscape

Using information from inside the rocks on Earth's surface, we have reconstructed the plate tectonics of the planet over the last 1.8 billion years.

It is the first time Earth's geological record has been used like this, looking so far back in time. This has enabled us to make an attempt at mapping the planet over the last 40% of its history, which you can see in the animation below.

The work, led by Xianzhi Cao from the Ocean University in China , is now published in the open-access journal Geoscience Frontiers .

A beautiful dance

Mapping our planet through its long history creates a beautiful continental dance — mesmerising in itself and a work of natural art.

It starts with the map of the world familiar to everyone. Then India rapidly moves south, followed by parts of Southeast Asia as the past continent of Gondwana forms in the Southern Hemisphere.

Around 200 million years ago (Ma or mega-annum in the reconstruction), when the dinosaurs walked the earth, Gondwana linked with North America, Europe and northern Asia to form a large supercontinent called Pangaea.

Then, the reconstruction carries on back through time. Pangaea and Gondwana were themselves formed from older plate collisions. As time rolls back, an earlier supercontinent called Rodinia appears. It doesn't stop here. Rodinia, in turn, is formed by the break-up of an even older supercontinent called Nuna about 1.35 billion years ago.

Why map Earth's past?

Among the planets in the Solar System , Earth is unique for having plate tectonics . Its rocky surface is split into fragments (plates) that grind into each other and create mountains, or split away and form chasms that are then filled with oceans.

Apart from causing earthquakes and volcanoes, plate tectonics also pushes up rocks from the deep earth into the heights of mountain ranges. This way, elements which were far underground can erode from the rocks and end up washing into rivers and oceans. From there, living things can make use of these elements.

Among these essential elements is phosphorus, which forms the framework of DNA molecules, and molybdenum, which is used by organisms to strip nitrogen out of the atmosphere and make proteins and amino acids — building blocks of life.

Plate tectonics also exposes rocks that react with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Rocks locking up carbon dioxide is the main control on Earth's climate over long time scales — much, much longer than the tumultuous climate change we are responsible for today.

A group of people watch from afar as a volcano explodes with lava

A tool for understanding deep time

Mapping the past plate tectonics of the planet is the first stage in being able to build a complete digital model of Earth through its history.

Such a model will allow us to test hypotheses about Earth's past. For example, why Earth's climate has gone through extreme "Snowball Earth" fluctuations , or why oxygen built up in the atmosphere when it did .

Indeed, it will allow us to much better understand the feedback between the deep planet and the surface systems of Earth that support life as we know it.

So much more to learn

Modelling our planet's past is essential if we're to understand how nutrients became available to power evolution. The first evidence for complex cells with nuclei — like all animal and plant cells — dates to 1.65 billion years ago.

This is near the start of this reconstruction and close to the time the supercontinent Nuna formed. We aim to test whether the mountains that grew at the time of Nuna formation may have provided the elements to power complex cell evolution.

Much of Earth's life photosynthesises and liberates oxygen. This links plate tectonics with the chemistry of the atmosphere, and some of that oxygen dissolves into the oceans. In turn, a number of critical metals — like copper and cobalt — are more soluble in oxygen-rich water. In certain conditions, these metals are then precipitated out of the solution: in short, they form ore deposits.

Many metals form in the roots of volcanoes that occur along plate margins. By reconstructing where ancient plate boundaries lay through time, we can better understand the tectonic geography of the world and assist mineral explorers in finding ancient metal-rich rocks now buried under much younger mountains.

In this time of exploration of other worlds in the Solar System and beyond, it is worth remembering there's so much about our own planet we are only just beginning to get a glimpse of.

— Gargantuan waves in Earth's mantle may make continents rise, new study finds

— Plate tectonics fired up at least 3 billion years ago, study of ancient rocks in Australia indicates

— Earthquakes can trigger quartz into forming giant gold nuggets, study finds

There are 4.6 billion years of it to investigate, and the rocks we walk over contain the evidence for how Earth has changed over this time.

This first attempt at mapping the last 1.8 billion years of Earth's history is a leap forward in the scientific grand challenge to map our world. But it is just that — a first attempt. The next years will see considerable improvement from the starting point we have now made.

The author would like to acknowledge this research was largely done by Xianzhi Cao, Sergei Pisarevsky, Nicolas Flament, Derrick Hasterok, Dietmar Muller and Sanzhong Li; as a co-author, he is just one cog in the research network. The author also acknowledges the many students and researchers from the Tectonics and Earth Systems Group at The University of Adelaide and national and international colleagues who did the fundamental geological work this research is based on.

I work on a wide variety of projects that all have a thread in them of working out how the planet has operated over the 4.6 billion years of its history.

Much of the research I get involved in with PhD students is about mapping the ancient plate tectonics of the planet. Where were continents in the past? Where were the subduction zones, the mid ocean ridges?

This is not a straightforward question in the really ancient Earth because we have lost all the oceanic crust older than about 200 million years old. Before that, we need to use more subtle proxies for the existence of now long defunct plate margins.
