Jawan movie review in hindi: शाहरुख खान की जवान का तूफान सिनेमाघरों में आकर धूम मचा रहा है. कैसी है फिल्म यह जानने के लिए पढ़ें रिव्यू.

शाहरुख खान की जवान आज सिनेमाघरों में रिलीज हो  गई है. फिल्म में शाहरुख खान, नयनतारा, विजय सेतुपति, सान्या मल्होत्रा, प्रियमणि, सुनील ग्रोवर, संजय दत्त, लहर खान और रिद्धि डोगरा अहम किरदारों में हैं. जबकि दीपिका पादुकोण का अहम कैमियो है. जवान को लेकर जबरदस्त हाइप थी और फैन्स फिल्म का बहुत ही बेसब्री से इंतजार कर रहे थे. खास बात यह कि जवान आया और छा गया. शाहरुख खान ने फिल्म को लेकर किसी भी तरह से फैन्स को निराश नहीं किया है और 2 घंटे 50 मिनट की फिल्म पानी की तरह बहती है और एक्शन से लेकर इमोशन और मैसेज तक की भरपूर डोज देकर जाती है. आइए जानते हैं कैसी है जवान, पढ़ें फिल्म रिव्यू.

'जवान' की स्टोरी

जवान की कहानी शाहरुख खान की है. वो शाहरुख खान जो देश के लिए लड़ता है और आम आदमी के लिए जी-जान लगाता है. इस तरह शाहरुख खान यानी विक्रांत राठौर और दूसरा आजाद है. उनका उद्देश्य किसानों, मजलूमों और देश के लिए काम करना है. जिसके लिए उनके साथ एक टीम है और इसी के साथ चलती है एक कहानी. जवान में दिखाया गया है कि किस तरह जब सिस्टम निराश करता है तो कुछ लोग उसके खिलाफ अपनी आवाज बुलंद करते हैं. जवान के हर सीन में एक्शन का छौंक है. 

'जवान' का डायरेक्शन

एटली साउथ के जाने-माने डायरेक्टर हैं. उनकी फिल्मों में भरपूर मसाला होता है. जवान भी ऐसी ही फिल्म है. एटली ने जवान में एक नहीं दो शाहरुख खान रखे हैं, ऐसे में हर सीन और एक्शन का मजा दोगुना हो जाता है. फिल्म पूरी तरह से मसाला एंटरटेनर है और एटली ने मासेस का भरपूर ख्याल भी रखा है. बेशक फिल्म में कई फिल्मो की झलक या इंस्पिरेशन दिख जाती है, लेकिन फिर भी फिल्म भरपूर मजा देती है और सिनेमाघरों में नई जान फूंकने का काम करती है.

'जवान' में एक्टिंग

एक्टिंग के मामले में शाहरुख खान बेमिसाल है. उनके अलग-अलग लुक धमाल हैं. उन्होंने दिखा दिया है कि वे बॉलीवुड के बादशाह हैं. फिर वह चाहे एक्शन हो या फिर इमोशंस. पूरी फिल्म पर वे राज करते है. फिल्म में नयनतारा छा गई हैं. उनका रोल जंचता है. एक्टिंग तो उनकी शानदार है ही, उस बार एक्शन में भी हाथ दिखा दिए हैं. दीपिका पादुकोण का अहम किरदार हैं और काफी पावरफुल भी. विजय सेतुपती ने काली के किरदार में जान डाल दी है. उनके डायलॉग में कमाल का पंच है. फिल्म का हर किरदार अपने आप में कम्प्लीट है. संजय दत्त का कैमियो जोरदार है. प्रियामणि भी ध्यान खींचती हैं और रोल को दिल में उतार देने वाले अंदाज में निभाया है.

जवान का निर्देशन एटली कुमार ने किया है. शाहरुख खान अलग-अलग लुक में हैं. नयनतारा का दिलकश अंदाज है और हैरतअंगेज एक्शन भी. विजय सेतुपती का काली अवतार है. ढेर सारा एक्शन है. शाहरुख खान का रॉ स्टाइल है. हर फ्रेम में कुछ नया है और फिल्म सिनेमा का जश्न है. इस तरह जवान उन लोगों के लिए मस्ट वॉच है जो एक कम्प्लीट एंटरटेनर देखने के शौकीन हैं.

फिल्म ‘जवान’ क्या है? तो सबसे पहले इसी पहले सवाल का जवाब और वह यह है कि ये फिल्म भारतीय सेना से लेकर देश के किसानों तक की बात करती है। सही नाम इस फिल्म का ‘जय जवान, जय किसान’ ही होना चाहिए था, लेकिन तब शायद ये एक सियासी फिल्म के तौर पर पहचानी जाती। फिल्म में सियासत की बातें भरपूर हैं और साथ ही शाहरुख के स्वैग का हर लड्डू मोतीचूर भी है। कहानी थोड़ी घुमावदार है और इसके हर मोड़ पर दर्शक तालियां पीटने को मजबूर दिखाई देते हैं। जेल में एक बच्चे का जन्म होता है। बच्चे को एक नई मां भी मिलती है। दिन जन्माष्टमी का है। कथा आज के वसुदेव-देवकी के बेटे सरीखी ही है। लेकिन, इस फिल्म में शाहरुख खान ने और भी बहुत कुछ कहा है जो देश की मौजूदा राजनीति पर एक सजग निर्माता, एक बेहतरीन निर्देशक और एक सुलझे हुए अभिनेता की टिप्पणियां भी हैं।

जवान: मूवी रिव्यू

तमाम खामियों के बावजूद आप ये नहीं कह सकते कि 'जवान' आपको वो नहीं देती, जिसका वादा फिल्म ने किया था. एंटरटेनमेंट..

शाहरुख खान की 'जवान' थिएटर्स में लग चुकी है. बिलाशक ये उनके करियर की सबसे मसालेदार फिल्म है. इसमें आपको तकरीबन हर वो एलीमेंट मिलेगा, जो किसी मेनस्ट्रीम एंटरटेनिंग फिल्म में होना चाहिए. एक के पैसे में दो-दो शाहरुख खान मिल रहे हैं. इससे ज़्यादा पब्लिक को क्या चाहिए? बेहतर फिल्म. 'जवान' को देखते हुए कई मौकों पर ऐसा लगता है कि शाहरुख जो चीज़ें अपने असल जीवन में नहीं कर पाते हैं, वो उन्होंने इस फिल्म में की है. मसलन, देश के सामाजिक-राजनीतिक मसलों पर खुलकर अपनी बात रखना. देखिए 'जवान' ने कभी हमसे एकदम अलहदा फिल्म होने का वादा नहीं किया था. वो है भी नहीं. ये फिल्म सिर्फ और सिर्फ टिकट खिड़की पर पैसे कमाने के मक़सद से बनाई गई है. और फिल्म खूब सारे पैसे कमाएगी भी. शाहरुख को जितना क्रांतिकारी सिनेमा करना था, उन्होंने 2014 से 2019 तक कर लिया. अब वो वही करेंगे, जो पब्लिक देखना चाहती है. जो कि सही भी है.

सबको पता है कि 'जवान' में शाहरुख खान का डबल रोल है. इस फिल्म से मेरा हासिल 'विक्रम राठौड़' का पिता वाला किरदार है. जिसकी बैकस्टोरी 'चक दे इंडिया' वाले कबीर खान की तरह है. मगर थोड़ा मैस्कुलिन, सिनेमैटिक और स्वैगर से भरपूर. फिल्म के आखिर में एक सीन है, जहां आज़ाद और विक्रम विलन से लड़ रहे हैं. काली उनके ऊपर शॉटगन से गोली दाग रहा है. ये दोनों लोग एक शील्ड के पीछे छुपे हैं. पहली गोली लगते ही विक्रम और आज़ाद दोनों थोड़ा पीछे की ओर सरकते हैं. पर्सनली ये फिल्म का इकलौता सीन है, जिसे मैं दोबारा या रिवाइंड करके देखना चाहूंगा.

'जवान' खालिस मसाला सिनेमा है. जिसको साउथ स्टाइल में ट्रीट किया गया है. कथानक से लेकर मैसेज तक सब कुछ. कैरेक्टर्स के लुक 'गार्डियंस ऑफ द गैलेक्सी' के कैरेक्टर्स की तर्ज पर बनाए गए हैं. फिल्म का एक सीन देखकर तो 'ज़ीरो डार्क थर्टी' की याद आ जाती है. फिल्म के सब-प्लॉट्स में कई सामाजिक मसलों को छूने की कोशिश की गई है. मगर वो जेन्यूइन एफर्ट नहीं लगता. इन्हें दर्शकों को ब्लैकमेल करने के लिए सिनेमैटिक टूल्स की तरह इस्तेमाल किया जाता है. इस फिल्म की सबसे ज़्यादा खलने वाली चीज़ मुझे यही लगी.

'जवान' उन चीज़ों को पकड़ती है, जिसे लेकर सोसाइटी बहुत टची है. किसानों की आत्महत्या. बच्चों की जान का खतरा. प्रेग्नेंट महिलाएं. अल्पसंख्यक लोग. भ्रष्टाचार. चुनावों की रिगिंग. इनमें से हर चीज़ आपको परेशान करती है. क्योंकि वाकई वो ज़रूरी मसले हैं, जिन पर बात होनी चाहिए. फर्क बस ये है कि उन मसलों पर किस नीयत से बात की जा रही है. क्या वाकई फिल्म या इसे बनाने वाले इन सामाजिक मसलों को लेकर फिक्रमंद हैं? या…

'जवान' को महिला केंद्रित फिल्म कहकर प्रमोट किया जा रहा था. कहने को तो 'दंगल' भी महिला प्रधान फिल्म थी. मगर थी क्या? 'जवान' में आपको 6 महिला किरदार नज़र आते हैं. उन सबकी कहानी फिल्म के लिए अलग-अलग सब-प्लॉट्स तैयार करती है. पूरी कहानी में सिर्फ उनका इतना ही रोल है. सान्या मल्होत्रा से लेकर प्रियमणि अपनी फिल्मों/सीरीज़ में नायिकाओं के रोल्स करती हैं. यहां उन्हें एक फुल लेंग्थ डायलॉग तक बोलने को नहीं मिलता. नयनतारा इकलौती एक्ट्रेस हैं, जिन्हें फिल्म फुटेज देती है. वो भी इसलिए क्योंकि वो फिल्म की हीरोइन हैं.

विजय सेतुपति एकदम टिपिकल विलन बने हैं. जो पहले राउंड में हीरो को हरा देता है. दूसरे राउंड में हीरो, विलन से बदला लेने आता है. विजय सेतुपति के काली के किरदार को थोड़ा और उभरकर आने दिया जाता, तो शायद फिल्म और रोचक बन सकती थी. हालांकि उनका एक सीन है, जब वो अपने गुर्गों से कहते हैं कि आज़ाद और विक्रम को खत्म करो. वरना ये लोग गाना गाने लगेंगे. और उन्हें सुनना पड़ेगा. फिल्म में दो सुपरस्टार्स के कैमियो हैं. जो हद से ज़्यादा निराशाजनक हैं. फिल्म का एंड देखकर तो मुझे एक बार को लगा, आइला अब्बास-मुस्तन की 'रेस'.

ये फिल्म जितनी शाहरुख खान की है, उतनी ही एटली की भी है. एटली को एलीवेशन वाले सीन्स का मास्टर माना जाता है. वो यहां भी करते हैं. फिल्म का बैकग्राउंड म्यूज़िक तगड़ा है. खासकर ‘जवान थीम’. मगर ‘चलेया’ के अलावा कोई भी गाना याद नहीं रहता. कुल जमा बात ये है कि तमाम खामियों के बावजूद आप ये नहीं कह सकते कि 'जवान' आपको वो नहीं देती, जिसका वादा फिल्म ने किया था. एंटरटेनमेंट. शाहरुख 'पठान' के बाद 'जवान' के तौर पर एक अच्छा फॉलो-अप डिलीवर करना चाहते थे. वो उन्होंने कर दिया है.  क्योंकि ये फिल्म झोंककर पैसा कमाने वाली है. 'जवान' को देखकर मुझे आजकल सोशल मीडिया पर चलने वाला मीम रूपी कथन याद आता है- I've won… but at what cost.

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan  resumes his much-anticipated comeback with “Jawan” (Hindi for “Soldier”), a high-toned action-adventure about a well-meaning terrorist and his crack team of hostage-taking girls with guns. 

Khan’s revival began a year ago with a prominent cameo in the otherwise meh mythofantastic superhero pic “ Brahmastra  Part One: Shiva .” Then in, January, he stormed the box office with the lead role in “ Pathaan ,” a manic spy thriller and the most recent installment in the Yash Raj cinematic universe. “Jawan” will probably delight Khan’s established fans, and maybe uninitiated viewers, too, if only because he’s comfortably playing the hits, now with somewhat greater conviction and a little more polish.

“Jawan” was produced by the star and his wife Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment production company, so it’s not surprising to see how well-worn and carefully navigated the movie’s contrived plot and conventional mood swings tend to be. This is a Shah Rukh Khan vehicle, and by now, that conjures certain formulaic expectations. Still, the makers of “Jawan” spend a little too much trying to convince viewers that we don’t  really  know Khan’s mysterious antihero, who, after an overproduced but still rousing flashback action sequence, takes a train-ful of commuters hostage. 

Khan’s character, soon revealed to be Azad, the warden of a women’s prison, seemingly executes a woman in a burqa, all while wearing a goofy bald cap, which he soon rips off. Khan, in character, rasps out his expectations-flouting demands to the generically incensed negotiator Narmada (Nayanthara): get the Agriculture Minister to pay off starving farmers’ extortionate loans, or more people will die.

“Jawan” careens from one twist to the next, fast enough that it almost doesn’t matter how familiar and ultimately staid its story and set pieces often are. A few plot twists are also easy enough to anticipate. Azad romances Narmada and charms her impressionable ten-year-old daughter Suji (Seeza Saroj Mehta). He denounces various government officials and combats their corruption with a handful of bloody, media-amplified demonstrations. Azad speaks for the common people but behaves erratically, performing a little soft-shuffle dance surrounded by terrified commuters. He proudly and laboriously explains that he’s actually a good guy fighting the real enemy: public servants who do not serve the republic.

There’s an involved and agreeably goofy subplot that ties Narmada and Azad’s story with the movie’s opening scene, set 30 years prior in an unnamed village that may or may not be Tibet (somewhere near “India’s border,” terrorized by Asian soldiers in white star-studded green caps). If you’ve seen Shah Rukh Khan movies before, you won’t be especially surprised at how these two subplots tie together, though you may be delighted anyway. It’s a major plot twist that predictably takes over the back half of the plot and re-orients Azad’s plot so that viewers know that this time, unlike all the other times, it’s personal. 

This time, there’s a nefarious weapons dealer, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi), who is as malicious as he is violent. There’s also a surprise cameo from a big Bollywood star, whose presence isn’t really a spoiler if you pay attention during the opening credits. And be on the lookout for a duet dance number led by Khan and Deepika Padukone, who have great chemistry, possibly because they know that, by now, they don’t have to really compete for viewers’ affection. Oh, and a couple of the fight scenes are maximalist show-stoppers despite being over-edited and under-directed. Loud and rote, sure, but never boring.

The main reason “Jawan” doesn’t deliver more than what Khan has previously delivered is because its creators seemingly included every masala-style subplot they could think of. Still, “Jawan” is unlike Khan’s last two comeback trail stops because its creators are better at navigating its many hairpin twists and turns. Kudos to director Atlee, a former assistant director whose credits include the Rajinikanth vehicle “Enthiran” and its sequel “ 2.0 ,” and his creative team.

Most importantly, in “Jawan,” Khan looks more relaxed than in years past, toggling leisurely through his repertoire of tics and poses. He looks especially comfortable in undemanding musical numbers, and he still gives great Blue Steel looks every time he turns on a slow-mo heel to pout at viewers’ and/or co-stars. Shah Rukh Khan is still a star, baby, and “Jawan” uses him about as well as his fans might hope.

Khan even looks good delivering a corny but impassioned speech later in the movie. As Azad, Khan reminds us that he’s just like you and me, the apathetic public who, despite our best intentions, have not always exercised good judgment when voting for government officials. There’s a general election in India next year, and while the makers of “Jawan” could have otherwise taken bigger risks, their efforts are appreciated.

Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan packs a punch in this massy, meaningful actioner

A Shah Rukh Khan film releasing is nothing short of a festival, and I say this with utmost surety because it's not everyday that you see a theatre housefull for a 6am show. After starting the year with a bang with a blockbuster Pathaan, SRK's Jawan goes one level up - both on being overtly dramatic and loaded with high-octane action. Writer-director Atlee presents Khan in an all-new avatar - rough, tough, gritty yet not without his impeccable wit. (Also read: Jawan review and release live updates )

Jawan is an SRK show from start to end, and it's double the treat watching him in a dual role. From his heroic entry scene to the fights to dance numbers, there's nothing that he can't do and makes you believe in it as well. At 57, turning 58 in November, SRK bowls you over with his action. Given the amount of action he has done in Jawan, it appears that Pathaan was a mere teaser. Atlee makes sure he doesn't disappoint audiences in his Hindi directorial debut, as he blends all the elements of commercial cinema to build a massy entertainer.

Jawan doesn't conform to any set templates or tropes and mixes everything that makes for an engaging and entertaining watch. Mention commercial, masala potboiler with action, drama, song and romance and Jawan has it all in abundance. I won't even say don't apply brains, please do because it highlights some important topics. The nearly 3-hour long film tells a compelling tale of prevalent corruption at various levels in the system that affects the common man in the most brutal ways. Thankfully, at no point it gets preachy, though it goes into a social commentary zone for a while, especially with a monologue from SRK towards the end.

Jawan's non-linear narrative starts in the present day and moves 30 years ahead and then uses flashback to explain the why and how. I won't share highlights of the plot for they may get spoilery. But, one can safely say that Jawan is not entirely a revenge drama but every sequence is a short story in itself with an elaborate flashback reasoning the current actions. Somehow, that also seems to be a problematic thing for I missed the consistency in storytelling. Jawan doesn't let you stay on one story for too long and hops on to the next too soon, thus breaking the flow.

What's consistent in Jawan is the top-notch and intricately choreographed action that offers an absolute cinematic experience. All the hype about Bollywood meets South makes sense when you see so much south ka tadka, especially in slo-mo shots, gravity-defying action with men flying and hero with his demigod status. A full-on actioner, it takes on the burning topic of farmer suicides over non repayment of smallest of bank loans. Given what the country went through in the past year witnessing mass farmer protests, the subject instantly strikes a chord, and makes you think hard. There this one moment showing a farmer hanging himself from a tree, and that spine-chilling scene leaves you heartbroken.

Another time, Jawan touches upon the corruption in healthcare system and the sad conditions of government hospitals. The film switches tone from being an actioner to a lighter tale in no time. There are two parallel stories running simultaneously. In one, Narmada (Nayanthara), head of Force Once is looking for Vikram Rathore (SRK) who put the lives of 376 passengers at risk while pulling off a perfect hijack. The second story shows Narmada and Azad Rathore (also SRK) falling for each other. Meanwhile, the baddie, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi) an arms dealer, has a history with Vikram Rathore and Azad gradually becomes a part of their story.

SRK's army of girls is the backbone of Jawan and it's heartening to see that each of them get enough screen time to shine and form an integral part of the film's story and screenplay. Doctor Eram (Sanya Malhotra) was wrongly framed in the killing of 57 innocent kids and ends up in prison while Kalki (Lehar Khan) as a farmer's daughter wants to avenge her father's death. Helena (Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) the ethical hacker and Lakshmi (Priyamani) as the girl-next-door have interesting character arcs. Along with their chief, all these girls showcase determination, conviction and grit.

For each stunt he plans, SRK dons a new look and much to the delight of his fans, he aces them all. Especially that metro hijack sequence where Khan sported a bald look that created enough buzz after the teaser dropped, shows him like never before. As a young Azad, he wooed with his lover-boy image and as Vikram with grey hair and a cigarette in his mouth, he carries unmatched swag.

Matching SRK's stardom, Vijay Sethupathi brings his own charm and gravitas. His portions are powerful and menacing. In his young as well as aged avatar, Sethupathi doesn't let go of the fear he evokes with his presence. His confrontation scene with Vikram ahead of the climax is brilliantly written and shot with a tinge of humour. Nayanthara brings freshness and is greeted with a slo-mo shot each time she comes on screen. Sadly though, her chemistry with Khan fails to ignite any sparks and it's quite bland. Deepika Padukone, on the other hand, as Vikram Rathore's wife Aishwarya, in a special appearance, is a treat to watch. There's even a dance number featuring the two, giving full-on Chennai Express nostalgia. Sunil Grover as officer Irani is a revelation and you wish there was more of him on screen and more for him to do.

Jawan's screenplay by Atlee and S. Ramanagirivasan is engaging and gripping but Sumit Arora's dialogues are quite forgettable and average considering the scale the movie is mounted on. Other than the one line when SRK says, 'Bete ko haath lagane se pehle baap se baat kar' nothing really stays with you for long.

Nevertheless, Jawan is a wholesome watch that won't give you any dull moment. Keep your eyes and mind focused on screen for there's a lot to take in and you don't want to miss the action or know why it's happening in the first place. Watch out for a climax that's one paisa vasool moment.

Jawan Review: Strikingly Meta Vehicle Taps The Magnetism Of Shah Rukh Khan

A young South Indian director with a 100 per cent success rate - every one of his four previous films has been a humongous hit - and a Bollywood superstar with an enduring fan following like nobody else's combine to unleash a Hindi mass movie that is as good as any we have seen in recent times.

Jawan , which also has Tamil and Telugu versions released nationwide, brings together the best of two worlds in a manner that borders on the delightfully frenzied and consistently captivating. Shah Rukh Khan, coming off the box-office record-smashing Pathaan, makes the most of a screenplay that has things to say and the wherewithal to making its pertinent points without losing its focus on the primary purpose of providing unalloyed entertainment.

Packed with all the ingredients that you would expect in a high-octane action film, Jawan is a strikingly meta vehicle in which a star communicates directly with his fan base and holds forth on themes that are crying out to be addressed. To that extent, it is somewhat like the 2017 Vijay starrer, Mersal, Atlee's third directorial venture.

In his first Hindi film, Atlee, who has written Jawan with his Theri and Mersal collaborator S. Ramana Girivasan, taps the magnetism of Shahrukh Khan and the spirit of the hot-button themes of the times in a superbly crafted potboiler that mixes big explosive action sequences with intimate emotional scenes.

Jawan tells the affecting story of a soldier without resorting to jingoistic bluster. If anything, the film does the exact opposite. It speaks up on behalf of the masses and touches upon issues that matter to people at the mercy of the politically and economically powerful.

Without naming names or specifying real-life parallels, Jawan weighs in on crony capitalism, bad loans, farmer suicides, neglected government hospitals, malfunctioning military weapons, election fraud and the plight of a citizenry stripped of access to resources that are rightfully theirs.

Jawan turns the spotlight on apathetic ministers, falsehood-peddling politicians and incompetent and compromised bureaucrats, none of whom are willing to be held accountable for a rotting system. The film delivers its message with great flair but without succumbing to gratuitous grandstanding.

Who is better equipped to do all this than SRK, who, even when he plays a larger-than-life action hero on a mission to take down a powerful industrialist who has wronged him and his nation in more ways than one, can stay rooted in the real world and animate the canvas with humanity even as he projects an invincible, superhero-like persona?

Jawan , produced by Gauri Khan under the Red Chillies Entertainment banner, erases the line that separates the actor playing a fictional figure and the star engaged in a conversation with his audience. The latter is inevitably one-way but as one watches the film in a packed hall its resonance with significant swathes of the audience is palpable.

SRK carries off the onerous task with such phenomenal panache that one barely notices when one entity gives way to the other. The narrative is never in danger of losing its balance even as the performer and the character shorten the distance between them.

On one level, Jawan  is a fan service masala film. On another, it is a tale of revenge that is also a political statement, and a loud and clear one at that. Jawan ends with the hero looking straight into the camera - it is positioned in a way that represents the eye of the audience - and tangentially echoing what SRK's character had said more than once in the action-comedy from a decade ago, Chennai Express ("Don't underestimate the power of a common man").

Ask questions, seek answers and use the power of your vote wisely, he exhorts the audience with all the solemnity that he can muster following an act of daring that compels the head of state to accept his demand to intervene.

Jawan opens in a hilly village on India's border - the exact location isn't specified - where a badly wounded soldier is nursed back to physical health. A few months later, he springs to the defence of the hamlet when it is attacked by a band of murderous infiltrators. He repels the aggressors but the brave warrior does not remember who is. A little boy who he saves from certain death promises to find out when he is old enough.

The film cuts to three decades later. A Mumbai Metro train with more than 300 passengers is hijacked by a group of six women (played, among others by Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra and Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) and an ageing man (Shahrukh Khan) in the guise of an Army Captain. He demands that he will negotiate only with one particular police officer, Narmada Rai (Nayanthara, who hits all the right notes).

The parleys over the next few minutes brings an unlettered agriculture minister and a wealthy businessman, Kali Gaekwad (Vijay Sethupathi), into the picture. At one end of the spectrum, we hear the story of a farmer (Omkar Das Manikpuri) forced to kill himself because he has defaulted on a Rs 40,000 loan for a tractor. At the other end is the case of a bank waiving off an industrialist's Rs 40,000 crore loan.

The captain's first encounter with the law gives way to scenes in a woman's prison where he reappears as a jail warden, Azad, a man who has revolutionised life for the inmates with boldly progressive initiatives. The jailer, with the help of six women who have suffered at the hands of those who wield power, is determined to change how the prison - and the nation - functions.

The first half of the 170-minute film is fast-paced and replete with stylishly executed fight sequences and a track that witnesses Azad and Narmada, a single mother, entering into wedlock. Post-intermission, Jawan recounts the story of Azad's birth, the fate of his mother (Deepika Padukone in a memorable special appearance) and his relationship with the former women's prison jailer Kaveri (Riddhi Dogra).

The flashbacks out of the way, the film returns to the thick of the action around the villainous tycoon whose misdeeds extend to trying to influence the electoral process with money power. The hero and his supporters fan out to stop the baddie and his accomplices in their tracks.

In the chase sequences in the run-up to a rousing climax, director Atlee and his team pull out the stops and come up eye-popping action passages. In the final act, SRK and Vijay Sethupathi (who is as brilliant as ever) square off in a scene that caps a magnificent crowd-pleaser that blends some sharp writing (the Hindi dialogues by Sumit Arora are almost always on the ball) and a high level of technical finesse.

Jawan hits the bull's eye both as a movie that is out to entertain and a vehicle that demonstrates the power of a superstar endowed with a voice that is anything but ordinary. It manifests itself as much on the screen as it does outside its fictive confines.

‘Jawan’ movie review: Shah Rukh Khan is spectacular in Atlee’s socially-charged thriller

It’s an opening sequence for the ages. Somewhere along the northern borders of India, a battered soldier recovers. The kindly and idyllic village he’s resuscitating in is set upon; people are shot, stabbed, drowned in a creek. The soldier rises like a messiah, swooping down with a spear against a thundering sky. We don’t see his face yet, wrapped in gauze, though his eyes fill us in. The staging is spectacular, mythic and rimmed with darkness. There’s also a flaming horse darting across the screen. No wonder Japanese video-game designer Hideo Kojima couldn’t contain his excitement on social media. As weird as it may sound, Jawan is, after all, the most Metal Gear- ish Shah Rukh Khan film.

Tamil director Atlee has been teasing a film with Khan since 2019. It’s not the first time an accomplished southern director has joined forces with a major Bollywood star for an action film with charged sociopolitical themes (Atlee’s mentor, Shankar, likely showed the way). Yet, there might be more to this collaboration than meets the eye. Atlee’s characters tend to have doubles and aliases . The multiple identities can be stashed in a single body (Vijay in Theri ) or several (Vijay in Mersal and Bigil ). The last two films, notably, were massy, twisty stories centered on fathers and sons. All of which screams out for Khan, who — rivalled only by Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar — is Hindi cinema’s biggest magnet for multiple-role films.

Jawan (Hindi)

30 years after that explosive opening, we meet Khan — now playing a goofy, wisecracking vigilante with a bald head —as he hijacks a metro train in Mumbai. He’s assisted by a squad of female fighters, most of whom get names and a few elite ones backstories. Also on the train is Alia, the daughter of a dead-eyed arms dealer named Kaali (Vijay Sethupathi in a mean beard). It’s revealed soon enough — spoilers ahead — that Khan in the present timeline is actually Azad Rathore, the jailer of a high-security women’s prison who moonlights as an ethical terrorist. What’s more, Azad is set to marry Narmada (Nayanthara), the fearless negotiator he was making song requests to while leading the hijack.

I won’t divulge how many Shah Rukh Khans you get in Jawan, but it’s enough for the price of a single ticket. Khan, 57, is an entertainer at heart but it is the flashes of menace and malevolence that mark out his best performances down the years. Since he can’t commit to outright villainy anymore — the cost of being a successful megastar — he turns to his quasi-antihero avatar with particular relish. “When I become a villain, the heroes don’t stand a chance,” he grins, more in self-regard than as an actual threat. Jawan isn’t a morally challenging or ambiguous film like Fan or Baazigar , but it still stretches the limits of its superstar’s repertoire. Benign, upstanding, ideal citizen Khan — check. Grizzled, cigar-chomping, Wolverine-recalling Khan — also check.

The action in Jawan is as slickly persuasive as you’d expect from a big-budget Atlee film. Drones, choppers, gatling guns; the director raids the whole inventory of Hollywood-style action blockbusters. However, what really sells these set pieces, besides some fluid jumps and kicks from Khan, are the smudges of Indianness applied to the grand canvas. I loved the idea of one of the hijackers leaving the crime scene in an auto. Or the flashback of Deepika Padukone (in a key cameo) slamming Khan in the mud. As in his past films, Atlee roots his action in urgent social justice anger. Khan launches his own Clean India campaign, taking on one faulty institution after another, from agriculture to healthcare and (more subtly and respectfully) defence. At least three different characters are labeled ‘deshdrohi’ (traitor) as the film insistently points up the insidiousness of such claims.

Jawan is also a movie in love with other movies. Bollywood and Hollywood fans alike will have a field day playing spot-the-reference. Before his endgame is revealed, Khan’s vigilante has shades of The Joker, Darkman, even a bit of Dennis Hopper from Speed . Kaali literally hands out red and blue pills (a neat idea, I think, since he’s working to corrupt the system). We get a Russian mob boss in a Bane mask. Yet, as in Pathaan , the best references are to Khan’s own filmography. Azad’s adoptive mother (Riddhi Dogra) is named Kaveri Amma, which was also the name of Khan’s adoptive mother in Swades (2004). There are similar nods to Main Hoon Na , Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and, perhaps most fittingly, Duplicate .

Not everything flies. There is a surge of Atlee-esque melodrama in the second half. Despite Anirudh Ravichander’s best efforts, the songs feel generic (‘Chaleya’ by Arijit Singh is especially forgettable; there is a better Arabic version on YouTube). However, Vijay Sethupathi truly unleashes his wildness in the later scenes and is a hoot. Nayanthara coolly underplays her typical heroine role, less smitten with Khan than the film would like her to be. The audience, though, is wholly smitten.

Towards the end, Khan delivers an impassioned speech on democracy, and the power of a single vote. Even in these polarising times, everyone listened in stunned agreement. One nation, one emotion, one Shah Rukh Khan.

शाहरुख खान की जवान थिएटर में रिलीज हो चुकी है और लगभग हर जगह थिएटर के बाहर लगे हाउसफुल के बोर्ड इस बात की गवाही दे रहे हैं कि बॉलीवुड का बादशाह असल में ‘जिंदा बंदा’ हैं. एटली के डायरेक्शन में बनी ‘जवान’ में वो सब कुछ है जो एक ब्लॉकबस्टर फिल्म में होनी चाहिए. मॉर्निंग शो देखने वालों की नींद उड़ाने वाली इस फिल्म में एक्शन के साथ-साथ रोमांस का तड़का दिया गया है और स्वादानुसार इस फिल्म में सोशल मैसेज भी शामिल किया गया है. हमने साउथ फिल्मों के कई हिंदी रीमेक देखे हैं, लेकिन एटली ने शाहरुख खान को ही साउथ, खासकर तमिल स्टाइल में ऑडियंस के सामने पेश किया है.

जवान के बारे में बात करें तो इस फिल्म की बेसिक कहानी हमने कई साउथ फिल्मों में देखी है. फिर वो एक्टर का डबल रोल हो, उसकी रॉबिनहुड वाली इमेज हो या फिर फ्लैशबैक और वर्तमान में घूम रही कहानी हो. डबल रोल में एटली माहिर हैं, लेकिन शाहरुख को इस अंदाज में बड़े पर्दे पर देखना शानदार अनुभव है. ये फिल्म 100 प्रतिशत ‘शाहरुख खान फिल्म’ है. 57 साल की उम्र में वो जिस तरह से लोगों का मनोरंजन कर रहे हैं उससे ये साबित होता है कि उम्र महज एक नंबर है.

ये कहानी है प्रतिशोध की. अपने पिता विक्रम राठौड़ को इन्साफ दिलाने के लिए भीलवाड़ी जेल का जनरल आजाद (शाहरुख खान) अपनी गर्ल गैंग के साथ मिलकर कुछ ऐसा काम करता है, जो देखने में तो क्राइम लगता है लेकिन क्राइम के जरिए वो देश की व्यवस्था में कुछ ऐसे सुधार लाता है, जिससे देश का आम आदमी उससे नफरत करने के बजाए उसे प्यार करने लगता है. अब ये जनता का ‘हीरो’ क्या चाहता है और उसके इस मिशन में क्या पुलिस अफसर नर्मदा राय (नयनतारा) उसका साथ देगी? काली (विजय सेतुपति) के साथ उसकी क्या दुश्मनी है, इन सवालों के जवाब जानने के लिए आपको थिएटर में जाकर शाहरुख खान की फिल्म ‘जवान’ देखनी होगी.

राइटिंग और डायरेक्शन

इस तरह की कहानी साउथ की हर 10वीं फिल्म में होती है, लेकिन एटली का डायरेक्शन हमें इस बात को नजरअंदाज करने के लिए मजबूर कर देता है. एटली कहीं पर भी बॉलीवुड की टेस्ट के मुताबिक अपना निर्देशन बदलने की कोशिश नहीं करते और उनकी यही आदत उन्हें इस फिल्म का ‘हीरो’ बनाती है. सुमित अरोड़ा ने इस फिल्म के डायलॉग लिखे हैं. ‘बेटे को हाथ लगाने से पहले बाप से बात कर’ महज इस की एक झलक है. ‘चाहिए तो आलिया भट्ट लेकिन उम्र में वो थोड़ी छोटी है’, ‘राठौड़…विक्रम राठौड़’ जैसे डायलॉग ने थिएटर में खूब मचाते हैं. हालांकि लॉजिक के मामले फिल्म कई जगह पर कमजोर है.

शाहरुख खान की हाल ही में रिलीज हुई पठान से जवान की तुलना की जाए तो कैरेक्टराइजेशन और स्क्रीनप्ले के मामले में पठान जवान को पीछे छोड़ देती है. एटली की फिल्म में ये समझ में नहीं आता कि नार्थईस्ट में रहने वाला विक्रम राठौड़, तमिलियन की तरह बड़ी बड़ी मूंछे क्यों रखता है या फिर काली गायकवाड़ की हिंदी में साउथ का एक्सेंट क्यों है. एक सीन में संजय दत्त का किरदार ये कहते हुए नजर आ रहा है कि मेरी बीवी का ओणम है, जहां उसका खुद का उपनाम नायर है (नायर मलयाली उपनाम है) अगर इन पर थोड़ा काम किया जाता तो फिल्म देखने का मजा और दुगना हो जाता, क्योंकि कहीं न कहीं फिल्म के कैरेक्टर के नाम यूट्यूब पर अपलोड होने वाले हिंदी डब साउथ फिल्मों की याद दिलाते हैं.

फिल्म में कैरेक्टराइजेशन भले ही कमजोर हो, लेकिन सभी कलाकारों की एक्टिंग बेमिसाल है. शाहरुख खान फिर एक बार दिल जीत लेते हैं. इस फिल्म में उन्होंने बाप और बेटे दोनों का किरदार निभाया है. दोनों एक दूसरे को टक्कर देते हैं. यानी बेस्ट परफॉर्मेंस के लिए आजाद और विक्रम दोनों किरदारों को नॉमिनेट किया जा सकता है. पठान में नजर आया शाहरुख का स्वैग इस फिल्म में भी बरकरार है. दो अलग-अलग किरदार, अलग-अलग बॉडी लैंग्वेंज को शाहरुख ने बखूबी पर्दे पर पेश किया है.

स्पेशल टास्क पुलिस अफसर के किरदार में नयनतारा पूरी तरह से छा जाती हैं. शाहरुख के साथ उनका फाइट सीक्वेंस हो या फिर रोमांस दोनों फायर है. एक्टिंग के साथ साथ अपनी एक्शन और फिटनेस का जादू फिल्म में बिखेरने वाली नयनतारा ‘आई एम हिअर टू स्टे’ का एक स्ट्रांग मैसेज देती हैं. शाहरुख और दीपिका को देखना हमेशा की तरह एक शानदार अनुभव है.

रिद्धि डोगरा, सान्या मल्होत्रा, प्रियमणि अपने किरदार को न्याय तो देती हैं, लेकिन उनके लिए फिल्म में कुछ खास स्क्रीन स्पेस नहीं है. संजय दत्त की एंट्री सरप्राइजिंग है. विजय सेतुपति एक एंटरटेनिंग विलेन है. जिस तरह से सिंघम में ऑडियंस ने जयकांत शिकरे को पसंद किया था, ठीक उसी तरह से लोग काली को भी पसंद करेंगे. विलन का कॉमेडी करना साउथ फिल्मों में आम बात है. लेकिन बहुत कम एक्टर इसे न्याय दे पाते हैं, विजय सेतुपति ने इससे पहले विक्रम वेधा में भी निगेटिव किरदार निभाया था, पर काली की बात कुछ अलग है.

एक्शन, म्यूजिक और टेक्निकल

एटली की फिल्म में कुछ धमाकेदार एक्शन सीक्वेंस हैं, जो बिल्कुल ओरिजिनल है. चाहे बाइक को सिगार से आग लगाना हो और उसकी मदद से दुश्मनों की गाड़ियों को उड़ाना हो, या फिर खंबे जैसे इंसान से फाइट करते हुए किया हुआ सिलेंडर का इस्तेमाल हो, एटली ने कहीं पर भी फाइट एक्शन रिपीट नहीं किया है.

फिल्म के गाने ठीक ठाक हैं, लेकिन बैकग्राउंड म्यूजिक कई जगह पर बेहद लाउड हो जाता है, जिसके चलते डायलॉग सुनने में मुश्किल होती है. फिल्म में फ्लैशबैक के कुछ सीन दिखाते हुए ब्लैक एंड व्हाइट, डार्क टोन का इस्तेमाल किया गया है, जो एक अलग असर छोड़ता है. सिनेमेटोग्राफी और एडिटिंग ने फिल्म को परफेक्ट बनाने में कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी है.

हालांकि शाहरुख खान का बतौर आजाद मेकअप इस फिल्म की बहुत बड़ी कमी है. 57 साल की उम्र में भी शाहरुख हर किरदार आसानी से निभाते हैं, जिससे देखने वाले को लगे ये उनके लिए ही बना है. लेकिन आजाद के किरदार में उनका किया गया मेकअप बार बार इस बात का एहसास दिलाता है कि उनकी उम्र छुपाने की कोशिश की जा रही है. हेयरस्टाइल और बियर्ड पर अलग तरह से काम हो सकता था.

शाहरुख खान की ‘जवान’ देखनी चाहिए, क्योंकि ये फिल्म अपने साथ एक स्ट्रॉन्ग मैसेज लेकर आई है. किसान की आत्महत्या हो या फिर आर्मी के हथियारों की क्वालिटी के साथ होने वाली छेड़छाड़. काफी समय बाद एक कमर्शियल बॉलीवुड फिल्म में इन सब बारे में बात की गई है. जिसे आमतौर पर डॉक्यूमेंट्री तक ही लिमिटेड रखा जाता है. यही वजह है कि फिल्म की कुछ कमियों को नजरअंदाज किया जा सकता है.

Jawan Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan’s film with Atlee rides high on ACTION, EMOTION and plenty of MASS moments

There’s a different kind of excitement in the air while watching the first day first show of a tentpole quintessential Hindi Film. After delivering a historic success with Pathaan , Shah Rukh Khan is back again with another commercial entertainer, the Atlee directed Jawan. With this action-packed saga, the team has promised a big screen experience like never before. Does Jawan live onto all the hype? Let’s find out!

What works for Jawan?

It’s difficult to explain the plot of Jawan in one paragraph as writer and director, Atlee, has packaged the film with so many sub-plots that eventually lead to the finale. Jawan is among those rare well written commercial films of Hindi Cinema, where the mass and elevation moments are stitched to perfection in a well written, tight screenplay. The narrative of Jawan keeps you hooked from the word go and makes you wonder what will happen next.

Director Atlee knows how to build on the emotions and make the audience root for the journey of the leading hero. There is so much happening all through the narrative, that despite the runtime of 2 hours and 38 minutes, the audience is hooked from start to finish. The action blocks happen for a purpose and are backed by strong emotions. The writing is such that the filmmaker has beautifully married the plot with a high point, every few minutes.

Atlee presents Shah Rukh Khan like a demi-god and SRK aces the mass avatar to perfection. The character evolution and elevation of Shah Rukh Khan is something that every hero of Indian Cinema would dream for and that’s the biggest WIN for Atlee. Right from the introduction scene, to the hijack episode, the pre-interval block, the post interval flash back, the robbery episode; in the second half and prolonged climax – Jawan is loaded with whistle-worthy moments. While the story and emotions engage you into the world in the first half, the second half has two of the best mass moments of the film, one of which is the robbery sequence, which makes up for some flaws in the latter half.

Jawan is a lot more than what one can expect – and it’s a rather brave film too as SRK makes strong anti-establishment statements too through the film. The back-stories of all the female cast in SRK’s team – Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Leher Khan and Girja Oak among others – is well integrated to amp up the emotional quotient. The scale of Jawan is unlike what one has seen in a film set in India. Every frame has grandeur written over it. The background score by Anirudh enhances the cinema watching experience – he elevates the mass moments and takes them to a different level. The score used for Vikram Rathore just adds on to the aura of the character. It’s a vigilante film done right.

What doesn’t work for Jawan?

Jawan warranted better music as a tentpole entertainer doesn’t really have that one quintessential chartbuster. While Challeya is the best of the lot, a bigger dance number than Zinda Banda with SRK, would have made the film tick mark the box of that one dance number that stands the test of time. Though the film has some strong dialogues in the second half, Sumit Arora could have packed a bigger punch with regards to one-liners.

The makers could have easily chopped the Farrata song in the second half, thereby bringing the run-time down by about 5 minutes. The romantic track of SRK with Nayanthara isn’t convincing as their relationship escalates quickly. The comic undertones towards the end of the climax could have been avoided as the intensity was at its peak in the sequences preceding those in the finale.

While Vijay Sethupathi rises above what’s written on the paper, his character could have been written better, with a stronger conclusion.

Performances of actors in Jawan

Jawan is an out and out Shah Rukh Khan show.  Right from the first frame till the last, SRK delivers a performance that would be remembered for a long time. From the display of his heroism and machoism to the emotional sequences, action blocks and the hard-hitting dramatic monologues – He does everything that one expects of a Hindi Film Hero. While a major part of the narrative rides on SRK as Azad, it’s the father, Vikram Rathore, who is a complete show-stealer. Every sequence featuring SRK as Vikram Rathore would be greeted with seetis and taalis from the audience. Nayanthara makes a smashing debut in Hindi. As Narmada, she gets her moments to shine, especially in the first half. She makes all those action sequences look believable and looks convincing in a role that requires her to share a unique dynamic with the leading hero. Vijay Sethupathi as Kaali is a perfect casting of a quintessential antagonist in a feature film. While his character is decently written on the paper, he takes it to another level on screen with the wicked smile and dialogue delivery. Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Riddhi Dogra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, Lehar Khan, Aaliyan Qureshi, Eijaz Khan and Sunil Grover do well in their respective parts. Deepika Padukone is impactful in her cameo avatar, and makes her presence felt despite limited screen time. Sanjay Dutt’s appearance at an unexpected juncture is sure to evoke whistles from the masses.

Final Verdict of Jawan

Jawan packs a solid punch with action, drama, emotion and scale packaged to perfection in the screenplay by Atlee. It’s driven by Shah Rukh Khan like never before in a once-in-a-lifetime kind of heroic characters of Azad and Vikram Rathore. The action blocks are backed by emotions combined with a strong story. With plenty of mass moments, Jawan is PEAK COMMERCIAL ENTERTAINER and is headed to be a HISTORIC BLOCKBUSTER. Its vigilante done right, with Shah Rukh Khan’s touch in commercial palate of filmmaking.

The Ending Of Jawan Explained

After a successful career playing romantic leads and being crowned as the "King of Romance," Indian megastar Shah Rukh Khan has now cemented himself as an action star, having consecutively delivered two of 2023's biggest Indian blockbusters. Following a four-year hiatus from acting, the 57-year-old actor returned with spy-thriller "Pathaan" in January, which shattered Indian box office records and maintained its position as the number-one Indian film of 2023 — only to be dethroned in September by Khan's own "Jawan."

"Jawan" — meaning "Soldier" — created new records by raking in the highest opening weekend collection for a Hindi movie, as well as being the fastest Hindi movie to reach the highly coveted Rs.1000 crore ($120 million) mark globally. The film shows no signs of slowing down, and at one point entered the top 5 at the US box office.

As with many commercial Indian films, it's difficult to explain "Jawan" with a single premise, as it has several movies stuffed into one: a vigilante's endeavor to right the wrongs of society, a son uniting with his long-lost father (both played by Khan), the unlikely love story between a cop and crook, and an ex-soldier seeking revenge on a corrupt arms dealer for framing him as a terrorist.

"Jawan" balances several genres, story threads, and themes with a breakneck pace that could make it difficult for some audiences to comprehend amid its tonal whiplashes and plot convolutions. It's a savory blend of action, romance, drama, comedy, thrills, and social messaging — essentially all the herbs and spices that make for a classic "masala" movie in India. So, if you're left confused by the movie's twists and turns and its many real-life and meta references, we've got you covered. This is the ending of "Jawan," explained.

What you need to remember about the plot of Jawan

"Jawan" follows Azad (Shah Rukh Khan), the jailer of a women's prison, who teams up with six of his convicts to try and cure the ills of society. The gang — each member driven by their own tragedies — undertakes hostage and kidnapping missions involving high-profile individuals and uses media attention to raise concerns and awareness about a host of societal and political errors in India.

The gang hijacks a metro train in Mumbai, holding its passengers hostage in exchange for Rs.40,000 crores ($480 million). Their aim is for the money to be sent to 700,000 destitute farmers around the country, who are forced to bear the brunt of poor farming laws and unfair interest rates that drive them to take their own lives. Azad, posing as "Vikram Rathore," targets Kalee Gaikwad (Vijay Sethupathi), a wealthy and murderous weapons mogul, to fund the demanded amount, citing personal history between the two. The gang's next mission involves kidnapping India's Health Minister and keeping him hostage in exchange for better infrastructure for every state-run hospital in the country.

Their demands are met, which significantly improves the lives of millions of Indians, for whom "Vikram Rathore" has become a messiah. However, Azad's exploits put him in conflict with counter-terrorism agent Narmada Rai (Nayanthara), who is on the other end of the hostage negotiations and has narrowly failed to nab the gang. What complicates matters is that Azad and Narmada — unaware of Azad's role as "Vikram Rathore" — fall in love and get engaged. Narmada only unveils the truth after the two get married, but both are immediately kidnapped and tortured by Kalee's men. The real Vikram Rathore — revealed to be Azad's father — comes in to save his son.

But wait, there's more!

After going undercover as a convict in the women's prison, Narmada finds out the truth about Azad and Vikram from the gang. In 1986, Vikram Rathore was a decorated Captain of the Indian Army's Special Ops unit. After successfully completing a rescue-ops mission — even after his unit finds out that they've been handed faulty weapons — Vikram filed a complaint against the Indian Army's weapons supplier, Kalee. Summoned to the court, Kalee tried to strike a deal with Vikram but was denied and had his contract with the Indian Army terminated. An enraged Kalee sent his goons to attack Vikram and his wife Aishwarya (Deepika Padukone), kidnapping the former and seemingly killing him.

Vikram was framed as a national traitor, and Aishwarya was arrested and sentenced to death for killing two police officers on Kalee's payroll. However, Aishwarya was found to be pregnant, which postponed her death sentence until the child turned five. The child, Azad (whose name translates to "free"), was born in the women's prison and raised lovingly by Aishwarya and her fellow convicts. On Azad's fifth birthday, Aishwarya told him about his father — insisting that Azad prove his father's innocence when he grew up — after which Aishwarya was hanged. 

In the present day, Narmada changes her allegiance after hearing the story. Meanwhile, Azad — now reunited with his father — finds out that Vikram survived Kalee's attacks and was found and rescued at a remote village, though he had lost his memory in the process. After a few skirmishes with Kalee's men, Azad finds out about Kalee's political ambitions, and Vikram — joined by his comrades from his former unit — commits to helping Azad in his quest to thwart Kalee's plan.

What happens at the end of Jawan

Azad's final plan is to hijack a fleet of Kalee's trucks, filled with money intended to fund Kalee's political career. During the heist, Vikram and his unit draw Kalee's men away from Azad and his gang, allowing them to escape. Kalee's goons capture Vikram's unit, after which Kalee finds out that Vikram is still alive.

Azad lures public attention by pretending to hold his prison hostage, along with a fleet's worth of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) that Narmada stole with Azad's gang. After negotiating officer Madhavan Naik (Sanjay Dutt) fails to capture Azad, Azad demands that the Head of State enforce the closure of over 200 factories polluting the air and water all over India, urging every citizen to use the power of their votes to hold their leaders more accountable.

Meanwhile, Kalee tortures Vikram and his unit into guiding him to a secret access into Azad's prison. There, Kalee and his goons overpower Azad and his gang, after which Kalee goes to kill Vikram. However, Kalee's pistol malfunctions in the same way Vikram's did several years back. The empty clicks of Kalee's pistol bring back Vikram's memories, and following an emotional reunion with Azad, the father-son duo overthrow Kalee and his men.

Kalee is forced onto the very gallows where Aishwarya was hanged, where he desperately pleads for his life, but to no avail. Kalee is hanged to death. An unspecified amount of time later, Azad, Vikram, Narmada, and the gang are seen vacationing in a picturesque city. Here, Madhavan Naik shows up, holding Azad at gunpoint, until it's revealed that Madhavan had helped Azad in executing his missions. The officer gives Azad his next target — Swiss banks — after which all our heroes celebrate their victory with a dance number.

What the ending of Jawan means

In "Jawan's" climax, Azad, directly addressing the entire nation through a live broadcast, delivers a monologue that urges every citizen to realize the power of their votes. He insists on voting not for any candidate's rhetorics on religion or caste, but for the actions proposed by them for the sake of the nation and its citizens' progress. 

India, much like the US, has seen an increase in the political strife between the left and right in the past few years, one that heavily involves the topics of religion and nationalism. "Jawan" star Shah Rukh Khan has, for the most part, refrained from voicing his political opinions, as Muslim actors like himself have faced heavy backlash from the country's right-wing for doing the same. Many theorize that Khan communicates his politics through the themes explored in his movies, especially with "Pathaan" and "Jawan." Still, "Jawan" doesn't criticize or point fingers at any particular political party or the ruling government, but simply encourages its viewers to rise above divisive rhetorics for the sake of the nation's progress.

Audiences and reporters have noted that Azad delivering his soliloquy directly to the camera is an extension of Khan himself voicing his opinions, where the actor gets the center stage to impel his audiences — India's citizens — to demand more from their leaders. This carries a lot of significance in light of the upcoming general elections in India in 2024, for which several candidates will be lobbying for votes to be elected as the country's next Prime Minister.

Another possible explanation of the ending

"Jawan" conveys several social and political messages, as Azad attempts to light a fire under the government's butt to get them to take corrective action for the sake of its citizens. The film also employs an "eat the rich" narrative, where the uber-wealthy Kalee, who has acquired his success by unlawful and exploitative means, is made to fork out $480 million by Azad (the Robin Hood archetype) to be distributed to hundreds of thousands of impoverished farmers suffering from corporate debt restructuring.

Additionally, the ending of "Jawan" highlights the importance of safer and cleaner industrial practices, with Azad demanding the closure of several factories across India responsible for labor exploitation, injuries, and deaths, alongside polluting the surrounding air and water. Furthermore, the people enlisted to permanently lock the gates to the factories are shown to be former workers who've lost their limbs and loved ones to unsafe working conditions at the factories.

The film puts forth an emphasis on labor unions and better labor regulations enforced by the government. Per  IndiaSpend , India reported over 1,000 factory-related deaths and 4,000 injuries between 2017 and 2020, though the site suggests those figures are probably underestimated as many events are frequently underreported.

Through Kalee's political ambitions, which involve using his powers to help his foreign donors attain cheap labor and land to build polluting factories, "Jawan" also touches upon the long history of international corporations exploiting cheap labor and weak environmental regulations in India, subjecting factory workers to demeaning working conditions and poor wages.

All the real-world parallels in Jawan

Each member of Azad's gang of vigilante convicts in "Jawan" is driven by tragic backstories that involve being vilified by society and wrongly imprisoned. Many audiences in India noted how the fictional stories of these characters were paralleled by grim real-life events in the country's history.

In the film, Kalki (Lehar Khan), a farmer's daughter, sees her father being harassed for unpaid loans due to bad crops, after which he is pushed to take his own life. Despite India being an agrarian country, the country has faced rampant suicide rates of farmers for several decades, due to unhelpful governmental policies and mounting debts with abnormally high interest rates.

Dr. Eeram's (Sanya Malhotra) story of facing bottlenecks in oxygen supply and later being framed for the deaths of several children, is nearly a beat-for-beat recollection of Dr. Kafeel Khan's story in the 2017 Gorakhpur hospital tragedy, as detailed The Wire . After the release of "Jawan," Dr. Kafeel Khan posted a video on X , formerly known as Twitter, where he thanked Shah Rukh Khan and director Atlee for raising awareness of his story through the film, and stated that the real culprits have yet to be punished.

The scandal surrounding faulty weaponry supplied by arms dealer Kalee to the Indian Army in "Jawan" mirrors similar real-life controversies regarding corruption and negligence in the quality of weapons supplied to Indian Army soldiers. Namely, the 1986 Bofors scandal, which uncovered deep government-level corruption and bribery in awarding weapons supply contracts to arms manufacturer AB Bofors, and a 2015 Delhi High Court inquiry into a petition claiming that Indian soldiers were forced to use inferior weapons even at the risk of death due to bureaucratic obstacles from authorities.

Jawan's many meta references

While commercial Indian movies don't outright break the fourth wall, they don't hesitate to drill small holes in it to add meta references and throwbacks to its stars, their iconic roles, and dialogues. It's one of the elements that make a movie a "mass entertainer" for audiences, as these references become an incredibly satisfying payoff for fans who've been following an actor's career for decades. "Jawan" is replete with references to Shah Rukh Khan's persona as "King Khan," his roles, and oft-quoted dialogue from his thirty-plus years of stardom.

At the film's midpoint, upon rescuing Azad, Vikram is asked for his name by Kalee's henchman and tells him, "Rathore. Vikram Rathore. Naam toh suna hoga (You know my name)," a reference to Vikram's name reaching public notoriety. The line also serves as a call-back to Khan's iconic dialogue from his 1997 rom-com "Dil To Pagal Hai" ("The Heart is Crazy").

When Kalee is confused by seeing Vikram's doppelgänger live on television while holding Vikram hostage, Vikram's cohort tells Kalee, "He [Azad] is Simba, this [Vikram] is Mufasa," a subtle reference to Khan and his son Aryan voicing the father-son duo in the Hindi dub of 2019's "The Lion King."

The most talked-about reference is Vikram's dialogue in the film's climax, translating to "Before you touch my son, deal with his father," which he tells Kalee when the latter is about to attack Vikram's son Azad. Aside from the sentiments of a protective father, the line carries more meta weight for Indian audiences who are familiar with the unlawful arrest of Khan's son Aryan — relating to possession of drugs in October 2021 — which was a major media frenzy at the time.

How audiences reacted to the ending

With the film's box office numbers and impressive scores on Rotten Tomatoes, it's safe to say that "Jawan" was everything that fans of Shah Rukh Khan and director Atlee were hoping for and much more. In addition to the film's breathtaking action sequences, political messaging, and Khan's crowd-pleasing persona, Azad's passionate monologue at the film's climax impressed fans and critics alike.

On X,  @KELVlN_FILTER  wrote, "That speech SRK gives near the tail end of Jawan feels like something that could actually inspire and enact change when you're watching it, that star power is crazy." Similarly,  @shreemiverma said, "The best part about Shah Rukh's scene in Jawan where he asks people to use their brains before casting their vote is that neither side of the political spectrum can openly take offense to his speech. The ones who do get mad inadvertently admit to being, well, incompetent."

Film critic Anupama Chopra said in her review of the film, "There is such urgency and such emotion in Shahrukh's voice, that even if at the end of it he had declared he was standing for elections, I would have cheered."

What does the ending mean for a potential sequel

The ending of "Jawan" has a throwaway tease for where its sequel could go, indicating a possible target of Swiss Banks holding "black money" (finances obtained either illegally or not reported for tax purposes) of India's wealthiest elite. Having achieved infamy in India, targeting the illegal wealth of Indian citizens kept in off-shore accounts seems like the best way for Azad and his gang to spread their vigilante notoriety across the world.

It would also be interesting to see how having a former cop, Narmada, in their midst would shape group dynamics and influence the way they carry out their missions going forward — similar to the romance arc between Inspector Raquel Murillo (Itziar Ituño) and The Professor (Álvaro Morte) in Netflix's "Money Heist,"  where the two were on opposing sides of the law before falling in love and carrying out heists together.

While writer-director Atlee showed interest in making a sequel and a possible spin-off focusing on Vikram Rathore, the filmmaker admitted in an interview with Pinkvilla that all his films have an open end, but he's never thought of doing a sequel to any of them as of yet. "For 'Jawan,' if anything strong comes to me, I will make a part two. I have kept an open end and I can come up with a sequel now or later. But definitely will come up with a sequel to 'Jawan' one day."

'Kalki 2898 AD' has entered its fourth weekend at the box office. The film collected almost Rs 600 crore nett in India by the end of its third week. Starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan in important roles, it continued to earn well even after 22 days with the third Thursday adding Rs 2.75 crore to the overall total of Rs 599.20 crore at the domestic box office.

In its fourth weekend now, 'Kalki 2898 AD' will be facing tough competition from 'Bad Newz' at the box office, especially in the Hindi market. The Vicky Kaushal-Triptii Dimri starrer is the latest Bollywood release this weekend and has largely received positive reviews from the audience on social media. The film is expected to share screens with the science-fiction drama in the North, at least, which might just hamper the smooth run of 'Kalki' , especially in the multiplexes.

Neither 'Indian 2' nor 'Sarfira', the two films which were released last weekend, could deter Kalki's performance. However, things seem to be changing this time with the release of 'Bad Newz'.
