Kabaddi is a very popular game in India and is native to the state of Tamil Nadu. Kabaddi is the national sport of Bangladesh and is played extensively in India and Pakistan. It is quite prevalent in the Indian states of Bihar, Punjab, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. The sport is also known by other names such as Kaudi, Pakaada and Himoshika in different regions. • Every match should be looked after by 6 officials: one scorer, two assistant scorers, one referee and two umpires.

• In order to prove that he or she hasn’t taken another breath, the raider has to continuously keep saying the word “KABADDI” from the time he has entered the other team’s court, till the time he comes back to his court.

Kabaddi: an Outdoor Game with Indian Origin

Other than watching TV shows or engaging in video games, humans can engage in outdoor games and events to have a good time with their family, friends, or associates. A number of outdoor games that individuals can engage in are available. Some of these games are easy to undertake and require no commitment or any arrangement. Kabaddi is one of the games that require no commitment, special tools, distinct place, or specific season.

The origins of Kabaddi can be traced back to medieval India. Over time, the game has been played in Indian Vedic schools. Although differences have arisen and instructions have been framed, the game’s primary objective has endured. Unlike other games, Kabaddi is a very cost-effective game. It can be played at any place. It does not require large court areas as exhibited by other outdoor games like cricket and football. An appropriate portion of land is all that is needed to play the game. The land can be a green field, a beach, or a sandy desert. The land selected for the game influences the nature of the game. As such, the harder it is to move on the land selected, the more challenging the game. As indicated above, no special tools or gadgets are required during the game.

Any individual, regardless of his or her sex, religion, social class, racial, or ethnic background, can play the game. The game’s standard field measurements are 125m 2 . The required length of the field should be 12.5m. The width of the field is 10m. The field is divided into two halves. Each of the two halves will be occupied by opposing teams. The surface of the field is usually dugout for a minimum of 1 foot deep. The dugout part is filled with mud. Currently, the game has been played in a court made of synthetic turf. By doing so, the safety of the players is enhanced.

The team is usually made up of 14 active players. Seven members of each team are positioned on the opposite halves. Each of the teams has five supplementary members. While the game is in session, the captain is the only individual allowed to converse with the team members. The players can utilize kinesics to interpret the intentions of other players. The play’s session is divided into two halves. Each half lasts for 20 minutes. A halftime break of 5 minutes is allowed between the games. Women or children’s match comprises two sessions, each lasting 15 minutes. At the end of the first half, the teams are given a five-minute break.

When the game is in session, teams initiate chances by sending a raider to the rival’s ground. Raiders are required to tag players of the rival team prior to returning to their home ground. A player who is tagged is eliminated from the game. In this respect, members from the same team must defend themselves from being tagged by the rival team. As such, defenders form a restraint by joining hands. If the restraint is broken, one of the defenders is eliminated. The major objective of the defenders is to thwart the raider from returning to their ground prior to taking a breath. If the attacker takes a breath prior to moving back to their court, he or she is eliminated from the game.

While the game is in session, only one raider is allowed to invade the rival team’s court. When two or more raiders invade the rival team’s court, a point is rewarded to the rival team. Once a raider has returned to their court or is eliminated by the rival team, the rival team is expected to send their raider in 5 Seconds. Accordingly, each team is expected to send their raider up until the session expires. Whenever the raider misses initiating a raid in 5 seconds, the opposing team is rewarded with a point.

Players are not permitted to hold the raiders’ bodies intentionally other than their limbs or trunks. Any player who violates this rule is eliminated from the game. Players can also be eliminated when they cross over borderlines or when their bodies are exposed to the ground outer the borderline. The above rule is only exempted when a player is tussling with the rival team member. When a member of the team is eliminated, the rival team gets the point. A team earns two points, whenever the whole members of the rival team are eliminated. The team with the highest points at the end of the game is pronounced a winner. When a tie is experienced, two extra plays are added. Each play lasts for five minutes. If the tie persists, the team that scored first will be announced the winner.

Based on the way the game is played, it is apparent that there are certain roles in life, personalities, or social relationships that prepare one for the practice. As such, the game requires individuals who are disciplined, keen, and upheld coordination. An individual who exhibits the above attributes will be perfectly fit to be a player in the above game. Equally, social relationships that emphasize coordination, teamwork, and disciple can also rehearse an individual for the practice.

How Kabaddi is Played?

Kabaddi is played between two teams and each team has 7 players. The matches are based on body weight and age. A straight line is drawn in the middle of the field between two teams.

This line is called ‘pala’. The team who wins the toss gets to play first. When the referee whistles then the game begins. A player goes to other side after crossing the pala and says ‘kabaddi-kabaddi’.

After this, he tries to touch the player of opposite side. The players of other team try to escape and capture him in the court.

If the opposite team captures him then he is declared ‘dead’ but if he succeeds and returns to his own side successfully then the team scores a point and the player who has been touched is declared dead. This dead player is then considered out and he does not participate in the game.

Sometimes, the defenders hold their hands to form a chain when the opponent comes to touch a player. This technique is used to confuse and distract the opponent player. The time duration of this game is 40 minutes and divided into two halves of 20 minutes with a 5 minutes interval between these halves.

There are six officials which supervise the match including a referee, two umpires, one scorer and two assistant scorers to finalize scores. The team with highest scores wins in the end.

Kabaddi has been a favorite game of India for a long time. It needs a rectangular ground. There are two teams with 12 players each. The players of different teams wear different colored trousers. However, only seven players are allowed on the field at a time. The best player leads the team.

The game starts with the introduction of team members followed by the toss. The team that wins the toss starts the game. The player of this team crosses the boundary and enters the field of the opposite team. He tries to catch the players of the opposite team. I love athletics. For me playing sports is fun and exhilarating. I enjoy the social aspect, the competition, and the skills it takes to play just about any game or team sport. My body has become a fine-tuned machine because of the skills I have developed.

Out of all the sports, there are, I enjoy Kabaddi the most. I grew up playing it and despite any disagreements the game never gets old. It is fun to try to tag the other players and run up the score.

One aspect I like is that it is a simple game to play. There are no balls to learn how to dribble or bounce. There is no special equipment outside of the team uniform and there are no walls or other obstacles that you can run into and hurt yourself.

Kabaddi is pure clean fun that allows me to spend time with my friends staying healthy and enjoying the fresh air if we play outside. The lack of equipment means that we have to use our minds, create a great strategy and be able to move fast in order to win the game. Those aspects really appeal to me.

In some ways, Kabaddi is like chess. You use your mind, create strategies and try to move out of danger as fast as you can in chess as well. Outwitting my opponents is far more attractive than trying to beat them physically like basketball or other physical athletic sports.

Of course, the women get the smaller playing field but I do not mind. The extra space to run allows me to stay in top shape and remain healthy. Another aspect I like is that a lot of my friends can play at the same time.

With 7 players on the field, very few are left out of the fun and the action. Of course, some versions have only 4 players but that is still large enough for everyone to enjoy themselves and play hard.

The one difficulty I always have trouble with is holding my breath and shouting all the time I am running. It is a challenge and training to get that right is not always fun. It is hard to say how many points I have cost my team because I just can’t get that requirement right.

Kabaddi is my hobby and there is a good reason for it being that way. I do not think I am good enough to play the game professionally. I would like to but my talents are not fully developed where I can match wits and stamina with those who have played professionally for years.

It would be exciting to have thousands of people cheering for me to get that winning point without sacrificing any. As it stands we have about 20 people cheering us on when we play on the weekends.

That may not be exciting or a large crowd but at least we get to entertain a few friends who can’t play and help them have a great time during the match. Usually, it is just our girlfriends who show up and cheer us on.

For me, that is enough and I am content with making her proud. I may not be a great player but in her eyes, I am a hero and that helps motivate me to practice hard and get better at the game.

Even when we lose she is there to help cheer me and make me feel better. That is one of the best reasons for playing Kabaddi. Having thereafter we finish means the world to me.

The simplicity of Kabaddi does not mean it is a bad sport to pay. Instead, that makes the game more fun as there are not a lot of tricks to master or equipment to fail. It is hard to imagine a better sport to play than this one.

It has been speculated that the game originated in prehistoric times, when the development of human reflexes was crucial for self-defense and hunting. The ancient Indian epic poem Mahabharata , in its account of the legendary battles of Kurukshetra, tells of a military operation—a doomed raid by Arjuna ’s son, Abhimanyu, on an enemy camp—that has been noted for its resemblance to kabaddi . For many years kabaddi was played for physical exercise by pupils in Indian gurukul s (Vedic schools run by gurus). Though minor variations emerged, the game’s principal objective of raiding the enemy territory remained common.

The basic rules of kabaddi were formalized in India in the early 20th century and published in 1923. The game received international exposure when it was demonstrated by an Amravati-based sports organization at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , and it was included as an event in the Indian Olympic Games held in Calcutta (now Kolkata) two years later. Following its formation in 1950, the Kabaddi Federation of India organized national championships for men beginning in 1952 and for women beginning in 1955. In the late 20th century the popularity of organized kabaddi began to expand beyond India’s borders, in part through the efforts of the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India, formed in 1972. That same year kabaddi was designated the national game of Bangladesh. With the establishment in 1978 of the Asian Amateur Kabaddi Federation, a regional championship was organized, and national kabaddi teams began to compete in the Asian Games in 1990.

By the early 21st century international competition typically involved seven players per team performing on a rectangular court, although other styles (such as “circular” kabaddi ) remained popular in India and elsewhere. The first Kabaddi World Cup, staged in Mumbai (Bombay) in 2004, hosted national teams from Asia, Europe, and North America .

A Kabaddi Match

Basically ‘Kabaddi’ is a rural game because village provides the ideal conditions to play it. As compared to many other games and sports it is very simple, cheap and demands nothing very special. No huge amounts are involved and no glamour that casts its shadow on the game itself. The game requires power, intelligence, stamina and cooperation. Physical strength plays a prominent role in the game.

To play this game no huge ground is required. A ground is dug either in oval shape or in a square. A prominent line divides this arena into two equal parts. The spectators, like in other games, do not sit or stand at a long distance from the players. They remain very close to the players and in a way participate in the match mentally.

Two teams face each other. The match I saw started at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The match started with the whistle of the referee. The players were in their under garments. Generally women do not form a part of the spectators. But now a days a Kabaddi match is also played by girls but it is few and far between.

The referee whistled and the match started. The captain of one of the teams went into the section of the rival team shouting, ‘Kabaddi, Kabaddi’. He danced and jumped and finding a golden chance touched one player of the opposite side and returned safely. The players of the rival teams tried their best to keep him in their section. Thus, one point was scored. Then a player from the other section repeated this very action. He returned to his side without touching any player. No point was scored. This way the match continued.

Once one player was caught. He pushed and pulled and dragged himself and using his hidden strength he touched the dividing line and scored a point. Thus one team scored more points than the other and won the match.

The spectators enjoyed each and every move of the players and clapped enthusiastically. Two moments were extraordinarily exciting when two players jumped over the rival players to rush to ‘their section. The ‘spectators whistled continuously.

The match was very exciting and interesting. The players displayed agility, speed presence of mind, physical strength and stamina with which they scored points. This match indicates that right from the beginning great importance was given to physical development in our country and such matches guided youths to keep themselves fit bodily and mentally.

माना जाता है कबड्डी का उद्भव वैदिक काल में हुआ था। शुरू में इस खेल को शारीरिक शक्ति दिखाने के लिए खेला जाता था। इस खेल को अक्सर रोमांचकारी बताया जाता है। वर्ष 1938 में, कबड्डी को भारतीय ओलंपिक खेलों में शामिल किया गया और वर्ष 1950 में अखिल भारतीय कबड्डी महासंघ की स्थापना की गई थी। कबड्डी को वर्ष 1990 में और मान्यता मिली जब यह बीजिंग एशियाई खेलों का हिस्सा बन गया था, जिसने कबड्डी को एक प्रतिस्पर्धी खेल के रूप में लोकप्रिय बना दिया।

• हमलावर एक ही सांस में विरोधी टीम के प्रत्येक खिलाड़ी को छूने पर एक अंक अर्जित करता है। बचाव करने वाली टीम को एक अंक मिलता है, अगर वे विरोधी को सफलतापूर्वक पकड़ लेते हैं।
• जिन खिलाड़ियों को पाले से बाहर घोषित किया जाता है, उन्हें प्रत्येक अंक अर्जित करने पर खेल में वापस लाया जा सकता है।
• टीमें हमले और बचाव के बीच बारी-बारी से खेलती हैं और हाफ़टाइम के बाद पक्ष बदल लेती हैं।
• खेल इस तरह तब तक चलता रहता है, जब तक समय समाप्त नहीं हो जाता। अंत में सबसे ज़्यादा अंक पाने वाली टीम जीत जाती है।

वर्ष 2014 में प्रो-कबड्डी लीग के लॉन्च ने भारत में कबड्डी को ग्लैमर दिया था। यह क्रिकेट की इंडियन प्रीमियर लीग (IPL) के बाद दूसरा सबसे ज़्यादा देखा जाने वाला खेल आयोजन बन गया। इस लीग ने कई ग्रामीण भारतीय खिलाड़ियों को राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों पर अपनी प्रतिभा दिखाने के लिए एक मंच प्रदान किया। जिससे उन्हें आजीविका और जीविका का साधन मिला। क्रिकेट, फुटबॉल और बास्केटबॉल के विपरीत, कुछ प्रतिभाशाली खिलाड़ियों के बावजूद कबड्डी में ज़्यादा प्रतियोगिताएँ नहीं होती थीं। प्रो-कबड्डी लीग ने इसे बदल दिया है।

कबड्डी भारत का एक बहुत पुराना और पारंपरिक खेल है। यह शारीरिक खेल है। यह हमारे देश के सभी हिस्सों में बहुत जुनून के साथ खेला जाता है। यह खेल गांवों और छोटे शहरों में बेहद लोकप्रिय है। कबड्डी आउटडोर खेल है।

लेकिन कबड्डी के खेल को खेलने वाले अन्य खेलों के विपरीत, बैट, बॉल, स्टिक आदि जैसे खेल उपकरण की आवश्यकता नहीं होती है, इसलिए यह सस्ती है। कबड्डी को केवल खुले मैदान में खेला जा सकता है। इसमें हॉकी, क्रिकेट आदि जैसे विशाल खेल के मैदान की भी आवश्यकता नहीं है। यह खेल दो टीमों के बीच खेला जाता है।

प्रत्येक टीम में पांच रिजर्व खिलाड़ी होते हैं। खेल का मैदान दो समान क्षेत्रों में विभाजित है। एक टीम के एक सदस्य को अपनी सांस रोकते हुए विरोधी टीम को ‘कबड्डी, कबड्डी, कबड्डी’ का जाप करते हुए भेजा जाता है। उसे विरोधी टीम के खिलाड़ियों को छूने और अपने क्षेत्र में लौटने की कोशिश करनी होगी। अगर प्रतिद्वंद्वी टीम उसे पकड़ लेती है और उसे टॉर्चर की अनुमति नहीं देती है, तो उसे बाहर होना पड़ेगा और उसे कोर्ट छोड़ना होगा।

एक मैच की अवधि पुरुषों के लिए चालीस मिनट और महिलाओं के लिए पांच मिनट के ब्रेक के साथ तीस मिनट के लिए बीच में टीमों को बदलने के लिए होती है। कबड्डी एक ऐसा खेल है जहां हमला एक व्यक्तिगत प्रयास है लेकिन रक्षा एक समूह प्रयास है। कबड्डी खेलते समय ड्रेस की अनुमति है।

खेल स्वास्थ्य के लिए बहुत उपयोगी हैं। वे ताजगी देते हैं और तंदरुस्ती रखते हैं। जिन छात्रों को कड़ी मेहनत करनी होती है उन्हें कुछ खेल अवश्य खेलने चाहिए। भारतीय और विदेशी दोनों तरह के खेल हैं। क्रिकेट्स, टेनिस, फुटबॉल कई खेल हैं। वे महंगे हैं। दूसरी ओर, ‘कबड्डी’, कुश्ती आदि भारतीय खेल हैं। मुझे किसी अन्य खेल की तुलना में ‘कबड्डी’ खेलना अधिक पसंद है। यह मेरा पसंदीदा खेल है।

‘कबड्डी’ आसानी से एक छोटे से क्षेत्र में खेला जा सकता है। इसके लिए बड़े खेल मैदान की आवश्यकता नहीं है। बीच में एक रेखा खींचकर मैदान को दो भागों में विभाजित किया जाता है। दो टीमें हैं, आठ खिलाड़ियों में से प्रत्येक। एक टीम लाइन के हर तरफ खेलती है। टीमों में से एक खिलाड़ी दूसरी तरफ जाता है और विपरीत पक्ष के खिलाड़ी को छूने की कोशिश करता है। यदि उसे पकड़ लिया जाता है, तो उसे घोषित कर दिया जाता है।

दूसरी ओर, यदि वह सफल होता है और लाइन के अपने पक्ष में लौटता है, तो जिस खिलाड़ी को छुआ गया है, उसे “मृत” माना जाता है। मृत खिलाड़ी अलग बैठता है और खेल में भाग नहीं लेता है। इस तरह, खेल तब तक जारी रहता है जब तक कि पार्टियों में से एक हार नहीं जाता।

इन सभी कारणों से, “कबड्डी ‘मेरा पसंदीदा खेल है। इसे स्कूलों और कॉलेजों में अनिवार्य किया जाना चाहिए। वर्तमान में स्कूलों में खेलों के लिए कोई उपयुक्त व्यवस्था नहीं है। विदेशी खेल महंगे हैं, और बड़े खेल के मैदान की जरूरत है। इसलिए अधिकांश छात्र कोई भी खेल नहीं खेलते हैं, यह एक गंभीर कमी है। ‘कबड्डी’ को अनिवार्य बनाकर इसे दूर किया जा सकता है।

डिफेंडरों का लक्ष्य रेडर को सांस लेने से पहले घर की तरफ लौटने से रोकना है। यदि सात में से कोई भी खिलाड़ी रेडर को छुए बिना लॉबी को पार कर जाता है तो उसे “आउट” घोषित कर दिया जाएगा।

रेडर को मैदान से बाहर भेजा जाता है अगर:

• लौटने से पहले रेडर सांस लेता है या
• रेडर सीमा रेखा को पार करता है या
• रेडर के शरीर का एक हिस्सा सीमा के बाहर जमीन को छूता है (एक विरोधी टीम के सदस्य के साथ संघर्ष के दौरान)।
• हर बार जब कोई खिलाड़ी “आउट” होता है, तो विरोधी टीम एक अंक अर्जित करती है। एक टीम दो अंकों का बोनस स्कोर करती है, जिसे “लोना” कहा जाता है, यदि पूरी विरोधी टीम को “आउट” घोषित किया जाता है। खेल के अंत में, सबसे अधिक अंकों वाली टीम जीत जाती है।

Pro Kabaddi League 11 full schedule: Complete details of teams, dates, venues, live streaming info

This time around, PKL will be returning to a three-city format, with the 2024 edition commencing at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad from October 18 to November 9.

The Pro Kabaddi League Season 11 will kick off on October 18 with a showdown between the Telugu Titans and Bengaluru Bulls in the opening match in Hyderabad.

The game will feature the home side Telugu Titans and its star raider Pawan Sehrawat against Pardeep Narwal, making his return for the Bengaluru Bulls.

The second match of the night will see U Mumba’s Sunil Kumar – the most expensive Indian defender in PKL history after being bought for INR 1.015 Crores – take on the attacking prowess of Naveen Kumar, who is among the star raiders for Dabang Delhi K.C.

It will then move to the Noida Indoor Stadium for the second leg starting on November 10 till December 1. The third leg will begin at the Balewadi Badminton Stadium in Pune from December 3 to December 24.

The third leg will begin at the Badminton Hall in Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune from December 3 to December 24.

The schedule and venue for the playoffs will be announced at a later date.

Speaking on the schedule of PKL Season 11, Anupam Goswami, Head of Sports Leagues at Mashal Sports and League Commissioner of the Pro Kabaddi League, said, “The match schedule of each PKL Season is a tremendously deliberated and painstaking effort to create and drive competitive relevance and engagement for the millions of kabaddi fans rooting for their respective Teams as well as the League overall. We are sure that the PKL XI match schedule will start firing the passion and expectations of our fans, and also guide our twelve Teams for their respective strategies and plans for PKL XI”.

The Pro Kabaddi League Season 11 auction took place in Mumbai on August 15-16, 2024, setting a new record in the league's history with eight players being sold for over INR 1 crore.

Organized and conducted by Mashal under its sanctioned agreement with the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI), the Pro Kabaddi League has transformed the image of India’s indigenous sport of Kabaddi and its athletes nationally and globally. After witnessing the participation of many of their players in PKL, several Kabaddi-playing nations have strengthened their domestic Kabaddi programs as well.
