A flexible, innovative and student-oriented approach

PhD students have the opportunity to make a significant and lasting contribution to the field of management. We provide a collaborative, supportive and intellectually stimulating research environment for the discovery and dissemination of knowledge applicable to the business community.

The Haskayne funding package is one of the most generous among Canadian business schools.

Additionally, scholarships, opportunities for publication and co-authoring articles in leading academic journals, and S upport to attend conferences in years two, three and four of the program is possible. Support is subject to approval prior to attending, and is contingent upon the student presenting at the conference.

We encourage early and continual involvement in research and give students the flexibility to explore topics of personal interest. Haskayne provides excellent supervisors who will work closely with you both in the classroom and on research projects, and provide essential resources and training in quantitative and qualitative methods and research design. A Haskayne PhD enhances communication skills, creativity, critical inquiry and confidence, in partnership with diverse professional networks and mentors.

Master of Management (MMgmt)

Course-based program

Program overview.

Designed for recent graduates of non-business fields, the Haskayne Master of Management program provides students with the opportunity to supplement their undergraduate field of interest with business skills and knowledge. Upon graduation, students will possess an interdisciplinary skillset that will provide the comprehensive edge needed to successfully launch their career.

Throughout the 10 months of intensive, full-time study, students will develop a broad knowledge of business essentials from accounting and marketing to logistics and entrepreneurial thinking. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to begin their careers in positions requiring interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving and a curiosity for exploring alternatives to standardized approaches.

Beyond the classroom, students will have exciting opportunities to make connections with the Calgary business community and grow their skills through networking events, live case studies, mentorship, career development opportunities and more.

Combined Master of Management/Master of Science

The Haskayne School of Business offers students the opportunity to take a combined dual degree program with the Technical University of Munich (TUM). This dual degree results in two graduate degrees, the Master of Management from the University of Calgary and the Master of Science from TUM.

Students apply to the dual degree program through the University of Calgary but must meet admission requirements of both institutions.

Completing this program

  • Required courses: Topics may include accounting, business communications, entrepreneurship, operations management, business technology management and others.
  • Courses for BComm Graduates:  For students approved for a BComm exemption, requirements normally will be:   Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Management Studies, Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources, and 8 elective courses.

Business Analyst, Project Coordinator, Marketing Associate, Business Development Coordinator

A Master of Management degree is usually considered a final degree.

Expected time for completion in this program is 10 months. Maximum time to complete is 2 years.

Admission Requirements

A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the last 60 units of university-level courses at the time of application (Graduate Management Admission Test or GMAT not required). Students with an admission GPA between 2.70 and 3.0 may be considered for admission based on a combination of admission GPA and an acceptable GMAT score. Admission is based on the following equivalent achievement score: [(GPA x 200) + GMAT] >/= 1150.

Preparatory courses

It is recommended that applicants complete an undergraduate course in economics, statistics, mathematics or psychology. Admitted students will be provided with online preparatory course work through the Haskayne School of Business prior to starting specific courses in the program.

Minimum education

A four-year non-business baccalaureate degree.

Work experience

A maximum of 3 years since completion of an undergraduate degree.

Note: Students applying to the Master of Science program as part of the dual degree at TUM must have 12 months of full-time work experience.

  • A 250-word response to each of two questions as part of the application process.
  • Participation in an interview (upon request).

Test scores

Reference letter, work samples, english language proficiency.

An applicant whose primary language is not English may fulfill the English language proficiency requirement in one of the following ways:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL ibt)  score of 97 (Internet-based, with no section less than 20).
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)  score of 7.0 (minimum of 6.0 in each section).
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE)   score of 68, or higher (Academic version).
  • Canadian Academic English Language test (CAEL)  score of 70 (70 in some sections – up to the program, 60 in all other).  
  • Academic Communication Certificate (ACC)  score of A- in one or two courses (up to the program), “B+” on all other courses.  
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced or Cambridge C2 Proficiency  minimum score of 191.

Research-based.

For full-time students, the PhD is a 4-year program, and the MASc is a 2-year program. 

Full-time students in the PhD program are required to complete a total of 4 courses at the 600 or 700 level, a comprehensive examination, and a PhD thesis of independent and original research work.  

Full-time students in the MASc program are required to complete a total of 4 courses at the 600 or 700 level, complete a master’s seminar milestone and complete a master’s thesis.   

In addition to the minimum funding provided ,  Students can also apply for teaching assistantships and research assistantships.  No supervisor is required at the application stage, a supervisor is required to receive an offer of admission.  Please visit our  Research and supervisors page with details about how to contact them. 

There is the opportunity for both PhD and MASc programs to be done part-time.  Part-time students are not eligible for minimum funding.  For part-time students, the PhD is a 8-year program, and the MASc is a 4-year program.

Doctoral (PhD)

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Management Science

Exceptional MASc applicants may be considered for direct entry to the PhD program from a bachelor’s program. Applicants interested in being considered for a direct-entry PhD should include a statement to that effect in their Supplementary Information Form (SIF). Applicants who will be considered for direct entry to the PhD program will be contacted by a representative from the Department within two months of the application deadline.

Course-based

Master of management sciences (mmsc) ​.

For Full-time students, the MMSc program is a 16-month program where students may choose to complete their MMSc degree in one year (3 terms), or in 16 months (4 terms), this will depend on your course selection. You will be taking 8 courses and will not have a supervisor and it is a self-funded program. Students have the option to apply directly to the Co-operative program. 

For Part-time students, you do need to be aware that the courses are not scheduled separately for part-time students and are usually held within the core university hours, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Completion of the MMSc coursework program on a part-time basis can take up to three years. 

The Department of Management Science and Engineering also offers this degree via online learning. All eight Master of Management Sciences course requirements are delivered via live interactive web-based tutorials. Graduate Diploma (GDip) in Data Analytics

The course work diploma program is completed in 2 terms (8 months), longer if completed as a part time student. Admit terms are Fall, Winter and Spring. This is an on-campus program, some materials may be delivered online is available. Students must complete the Graduate Academic Integrity Module and 4 courses. Students must maintain an overall average of at least 73% at the end of each term, with no more than 2 failed courses overall

Graduate Diploma (GDip) in Data Analytics (Direct Entry)

Admission Requirements

Only for the research-based PhD and MASc programs, the admission depends on the student finding a suitable supervisor. You don’t need a supervisor to apply, so we suggest that you apply, upload all materials and then start the process of trying to make contact with the faculty members in the Management Science and Engineering Research and supervisors .
