The briefing process

Face-to-face meetings are preferred (especially for your first project), however email and phone briefings are of course welcome.

Generally I like to get an understanding of the broader context of your project and any style guides or terminology guidelines of which I may need to be aware, as well as an understanding of the target audience.

Working format

I’m happy to work in any format that suits you. The most common formats my clients and I work in are:

• Microsoft Word using the 'track changes' tool
• Microsoft PowerPoint using the 'highlight' tool
• Adobe (PDF) using the 'highlight' and/or 'comment' tool
• Google Docs or Slides using the 'comment' tool
• Direct editing of content (electronic)

I also have skills in using traditional proofing symbols for hard copy editing if required.

Turnaround times

My turnaround times depend on the length of the material, however I can generally turn most projects around within a few days. For short, urgent pieces, I can usually get them back to you within 24 hours.

The time required for your project will be estimated once I receive your brief.

What I look out for

In addition to spelling, grammar and punctuation, I also thoroughly check the following:

• Suitability for the audience

• Visual accuracy such as pagination, page references and contents
• Adherence to style guide

The time required for a project depends on the amount of content, the level of editing required, the thoroughness of the brief, the complexity of the content, and the number of revisions requested.

My rate is $100 per hour.

I offer a reduced rate for not-for-profit organisations. Get in touch to find out more.  

Once I have an understanding of your project and what’s involved, I will always provide an estimate of the time required before the quote is approved and any work begins. I will also provide updates if I have under-estimated or over-estimated on the time required.

For new clients, I generally request either a Purchase Order or an up-front deposit of 50%, with the balance invoiced after project completion. However, I'm happy to negotiate payment terms depending upon individual circumstances.

Proofreading services consist of checking for minor errors in a text after copy editing and before publication. While just about anyone can proofread material (such as a tweet or a poster) before it goes out into the world, expert proofreading takes a lot more skill and eagle eyes.

Preparing a proofreading guide

Your proofreader starts by making a checklist that covers the style guide you need to follow, any notes or instructions you may have, or notes from your professor that may factor into your text’s proofreading. 

Fact-checking

Next, your Tasker fact-checks any dates, numbers, figures, and proper names. If you forgot to include specific information in your thesis, the proofreader highlights this omission so that you can add it in later. 

Checking for spelling errors

The proofreader checks for any spelling errors. Even if they’re using a digital file and there are spell checkers on Word and Google Docs, it’s still helpful to have real human eyes go over your text. If you’re used to British English but need to write using American English, they may also be able to catch some spelling and word choice errors. 

Reading out loud (and backwards)

One helpful tip for proofreading even your own work is reading the text aloud and then reading it backwards. This step ensures that you don’t have any run-on sentences, that the material has a nice flow or cadence, and that you catch any errors you might have missed while reading silently. You can expect a good proofreader to do this at least once. 

Another way to spot errors is to read one line at a time. This helps the proofreader focus on verb tenses as well, so they can mark any areas where you got inconsistent while writing.  

Checking the format

This is vital when you’re submitting a thesis or dissertation, which may require precise margins, font sizes, and table or chart descriptions. Your proofreader also checks for page numbering, column alignment, headlines, subheadings, and footnotes or endnotes. 

Since they are working with proof of your final document, all these little (but noticeable) things should be taken care of. This way, the material you submit to your publisher or professor or distribute to your clients and customers is error-free.

Australian Catholic University (ACU)

The ACU has two Sydney campuses, one in North Sydney, just north of the Harbour Bridge, and another in Strathfield, 14 kilometres west of the Sydney city centre. The university offers off-campus, apartment-style accommodation in Camperdown, a short commute from both campuses, where students can receive support and attend academic, social and spiritual events on a monthly basis.

Charles Sturt University (CSU)

CSU has New South Wales campuses in Wagga, Albury–Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo and Orange, some of the state’s most vibrant regional centres. It has three main faculties: Arts and Education; Business, Justice and Behavioural Sciences; and Science. In terms of accommodation, rooms in apartments or cottages near each campus may be rented through the university.

Once you’ve written your assignment, it’s important to edit and proofread your work.

Depending on the type of assignment and your process of writing, editing may involve:

• removing or adding text to meet the word limit
• making your sentences clearer and more concise
• restructuring paragraphs or sections
• making sure your ideas flow logically
• making sure you’ve provided enough background information
• adding in subheadings or sentences to clearly signpost the structure.

Once you’ve edited your work, proofread it. This involves checking spelling, grammar and references.

Help editing and proofreading

There is no editing or proofreading service at the University. However, you can develop techniques to edit and proofread your own work. The Learning Hub (Academic Language and Learning) runs workshops and offers individual consultations where you can discuss ways to improve your writing. Bring an assignment that has already been marked as a sample of your work, and the Learning Hub (Academic Language and Learning) lecturer can identify any problems that you have and advise you on how to avoid them in the future.

Unmarked work that you intend to submit cannot be edited by a Learning Hub (Academic Language and Learning) lecturer. At most, the lecturer can give you general feedback based on reading one or two pages.

If you are a postgraduate research student, you can ask the Learning Hub (Academic Language and Learning) for feedback on parts of your thesis. This would include advice on structure, clarity, expression, or aspects of grammar but does not involve editing and proofreading. If you want to use this service, begin well before your submission date, as it aims to help you develop writing skills, not to fix up mistakes.

If you’re a postgraduate student and willing to spend money, a list of private proofreaders and editors can be obtained via Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA) . You may also find proofreaders who advertise their services on noticeboards around the University.
