You can be the author of your life and career instead of letting another person or situation write ... [+] the narrative for you.
A friend recently lamented that Hurricane Debby, hovering over the South Carolina coast, would probably destroy his beach house. A client mentioned that her boss summoned her to his office after a meeting, and she was certain of being laid off. A family member insisted before his MRI that a tumor was cancerous. The outcomes of all three scenarios were the exact opposite of the stories they made up. Hurricane Debby avoided my friend’s beach house, the client was promoted instead of fired and the family member’s tumor turned out to be benign.
If you’re like most people, you, too, have an “Inner Fortuneteller” that makes up negative stories about what your future holds before it ever happens: “I probably won’t reach the deadline.” or “I’m afraid I’ll flop in the job interview” or “What if I get a bad performance review?”
Some people come through challenges stronger and more successful, while others seem trapped in victim-hood and failure. According to Lior Arussy in his book, Dare to Author: Take Charge of the Narrative of Your Life , the critical factor determining failure or success lies in the story people craft around their experiences. He calls this process “intentional authoring”—a call to create and own your career story, to be deliberate, to dream and to chart a path toward achieving that dream.
“Authoring is a proactive approach to turning life experiences into celebrated chapters and milestones. But beyond simply infusing purpose into the past, authoring is converting those experiences into guiding life lessons, strength and resilience that prepare you to be triumphant in your next challenge,” Arussy explains. “This means framing experiences—both positive and negative, planned and unexpected—in ways that elevate you from the victim role and into the protagonist.”
He notes that the biggest obstacle to being future-ready occurs when you are stuck with an old story. When leaders and team members author their own stories, they turn their past experiences into future strength. It involves taking charge of your career story, focusing on the power you possess and using it to build the career you want.
When leaders and team members feel stuck, unable to move forward, they need to look at the stories they’re telling themselves about their own lives and their future careers. “We all live in stories. But stories are not facts—they’re the narratives we create based on our past experiences and the voices in our heads,” Arussy points out. “Many people are unable to face challenges because they failed to author and convert their past experiences into future-ready strength.”
The first step in authoring your elevated life begins with recognizing that you are perceiving your experiences through lenses that cloud the facts, according to Arussy. “We lean toward reaffirming our current state rather than venturing into new opportunities.” This manifests in a variety of damaging ways, including impostor syndrome, confirmation bias, and difficulty accepting compliments. But you have the power to shift your thinking and break free from these common biased perspectives . For example, to overcome impostor syndrome, ask yourself such questions as: What skills and experience do I possess that are relevant to my role? What impact do I make on people when I execute this task?
Using the universal experience of Covid-19 as an example, Arussy says you can write—or rewrite—your Covid-19 “chapter” with questions to help you rethink how you coped with each stage of the pandemic: what are the new habits or strategies you developed? What personal “superpower” was revealed?
Made-up stories are endless exaggerated thoughts streaming through our minds that we latch onto as fact—worries, warnings and ruminations that interrupt our enjoyment of the present moment. They magnify a concern with the worst-case scenario and play the distorted picture over in our minds. We end up stressing over a magnification of the problem (a made-up story)—not the real problem, and the stories become obstacles to career advancement.
When a made-up story circles in your mind like a school of sharks, you can observe it much like you would inspect a blemish on your hand. This self-distancing preempts the Fortuneteller from seizing control of your career with its inaccurate story and revises the inaccurate story in your mind just as you would revise a written report: “Bryan, you can do this. You’ve overcome bigger obstacles than this before.” After you edit, it’s no longer the only story circling in your head. You become the narrator of your career with the objective, bird’s-eye perspective of an outside observer as if it’s happening to someone else. Using this self-distancing tool separates you from the made-up story and keeps you from reverting into that negative loop over and over again.
The benefits of authoring your story, Arussy proposes, reach beyond leaders themselves. Stories help leaders connect with their teams and their people. Stories illustrate a leader’s intentions and vision by revealing the choices they made in the past. They engender trust and engagement. “Changing a mindset is not just a matter of deciding to do so,” the author concludes. “It is all about practicing the decision in a real-life situation. If we don’t intentionally author our own stories, we are living within a story crafted for us but not by us.”
