USC’s Rossier School of Education offers online doctoral programs in educational leadership and in organizational change and leadership. Although students can complete coursework for either program online, the school requires doctoral candidates to attend onsite immersion experiences, which are scheduled in advance. The school also offers an online global executive doctorate specifically designed for senior education professionals seeking to shape educational policies and practice internationally.

Students accepted to USC’s doctor of social work program can pursue an accelerated track that takes seven semesters or a regular track that takes nine semesters. The program comprises 42 credits and does not require applicants to submit GRE scores with their application. The doctorate in physical therapy follows a hybrid delivery format and includes coursework in musculoskeletal anatomy, clinical exercise physiology, life span motor control, and differential diagnosis in physical therapy.

The University of Southern California is regionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission.

22. University of St Francis

Students accepted to the online doctoral program in education at the University of St. Francis can pursue a concentration in superintendent endorsement or in leadership, learning, and stewardship. The Ed.D. comprises 60 credits. Although learners can complete most coursework online, the program requires some onsite presence.

The Ed.D. in superintendent endorsement accepts applications only from practitioners holding a professional educator license with a general administrative or principal endorsement. The program prepares these candidates for district-wide leadership. Students in this concentration work with their advisors to craft an individualized plan of study that supports their specific career and educational goals.

USF also offers a 40-credit doctor of nursing practice program with an optional concentration in nurse education. The curriculum includes courses in healthcare policy, politics, and practice; diversity and social justice in a global society; healthcare finance and practice management; and professional and organizational communication.

University of St. Francis is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

23. Villanova University

Villanova University offers online doctoral programs in nursing through the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing. Students can choose to pursue a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) or a doctor of philosophy degree.

The DNP allows students to choose a full-time, part-time, or flex track, which they can complete in five, eight, or 11 consecutive semesters, respectively. DNP courses run synchronously with some on-campus components scheduled ahead of time. The program follows a cohort model of education and accepts applications only from MSN-trained advanced practice RNs with a current APRN license.

The Ph.D. program offers online coursework during the fall and spring semesters and on-campus classes during summer terms. The program comprises 51 credits and includes courses in conceptual and theoretical foundations in nursing science; advocacy, policy, and ethics in healthcare; structure and philosophy in higher education; and curriculum design in nursing education. The length of time to complete the Ph.D. varies and depends on a student’s educational background, progress in the program, and personal goals.

Villanova University is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

24. Wilkes University

Wilkes University offers online doctoral programs in education and nursing. The doctorate in educational leadership follows a cohort model of education and requires students to attend only three residencies throughout their course of study. The curriculum comprises 60 post-master’s credits and offers concentrations in educational technology, curriculum and instruction, and educational leadership studies. By enrolling in 12-18 credits each year, doctoral candidates can complete the coursework portion of the program in 3-4 years and begin writing their dissertation.

Nursing practitioners can choose to get a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) or a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.). The DNP comprises 35 credits and takes two years to complete. The Ph.D. consists of 47 credits and takes three years. Both programs accept applications from MSN-trained practitioners with a valid nursing license. Students complete all coursework online. However, Ph.D. candidates must attend one two-day on-campus residency prior to graduation. The DNP program requires candidates to complete clinical hours, the total number of which depends on their educational and practice background.

Wilkes University is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

25. A.T. Still University of Health Sciences

The College of Graduate Health Studies at A.T. Still University of Health Sciences offers online doctoral programs in health administration, health professions, and health sciences. The programs only accept applications from practitioners holding a master’s degree in the area of study they plan to pursue or a closely related field.

The health professions and health administration programs consist of 55 and 62 credits, respectively. The college offers both programs completely online. Students pursuing the health professions program complete a doctoral research project as their culminating activity. Doctoral candidates in the health administration program write a dissertation.

The doctoral program in health science comprises 70 post-master’s credits and offers three concentration areas: global health, fundamentals of education, and leadership and organizational behavior. The curriculum includes coursework in population health and patient-centered care; health administration, law, and ethics; risk management for health professionals; and principles of management and decision analysis. An applied research project is the degree’s culminating activity.

A.T. Still University of Health Sciences is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Can you get a doctorate online, and should you?

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest level degree awarded in a specific academic field. Beyond the title, a PhD can be exciting for many reasons. It’s a way — not the only way — to collaborate with passionate people on important problems, to contribute new knowledge to the world, and to open doors to careers at the highest levels. In many fields, a PhD is a requirement to be hired as a researcher, a scientist, or a university professor.

However, a PhD is time consuming. If you are not living close to a university and if you already have other obligations that prevent you from joining an in-person PhD program, you may be considering an online PhD. The short answer to whether you can get a doctorate online is: yes, it is possible. The longer answer is that it comes with many caveats, limitations, and risks that need to be navigated carefully. But, with the right approach and some good amount of preparation, some fields of research can be great candidates for an online PhD.

The pros and cons of an online PhD

Similar to all distance learning programs, the main advantage of an online PhD is the flexibility. You can work from anywhere and in your own time. This flexibility may be attractive if you already have other obligations, such as being a stay-at-home parent, being a caregiver for a family member, not being able to move cities to get closer to a university, or having a job that you cannot quit.

The main disadvantage of an online PhD — provided that it is provided by a reputable university — is the isolation, which is especially problematic in academic research, where a lot of the ideas are generated through serendipitous conversations with colleagues. When getting a doctorate online, you will be working on your own most of the time, which can feel lonely and demotivating.

However, this challenge can be mitigated by participating in academic conferences, whether online or in person, where you can meet with fellow colleagues, exchange ideas, and grow your network. With social media, it has also become easier to share your work with the world and to foster conversations outside of your immediate academic group, which can be particularly helpful if you are pursuing an online doctorate.

Another disadvantage is that you will be limited in terms of areas of research, as many academic fields rely on the use of specific equipment that can be costly, or even impossible, to acquire on your own. There is little you can do about this limitation, except choosing an area of research that doesn’t require such equipment.

Finally, it is a common misconception that getting a PhD online costs less than in-person ones. Most universities charge the exact same price for online doctorates as they do for the ones delivered on campus, though some of them include the price of plane tickets and accommodation for when you absolutely need to be on-site, namely for the final oral examination where you present your thesis. In addition, it is very rare — practically unheard of — to obtain institutional funding for an online PhD, so you will need to cover the costs of your tuition and your research, which can be a considerable amount of money.

Avoiding online PhD scams

The pros and cons outlined above only concern legitimate online PhD programs. Unfortunately, bad actors are capitalizing on the fact that many people would like to pursue a doctorate without having the ability to do so in-person.

Diploma mills are organizations that claim to be a higher education institution, and that deliver diplomas in exchange for a fee. Those diplomas are either fake or practically useless. Diploma mills exist at all levels of study, but they are particularly problematic at the doctorate level where you will find yourself working for three to six years, which is a significant investment of time and money.

It can be hard to tell these organizations apart from legitimate institutions, as they often have beautiful websites, a brochure, and a call center where you can ask questions. To make matters worse, diploma mills are often supported by accreditation mills, set up for the purpose of providing an appearance of legitimacy.

There are several red flags you should pay attention to if you are considering an online PhD. 

• Accreditation. Is the organization accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency? Beware of buzz words such as “licensed”, “authenticated”, or “notarized”, which are not relevant to academic credentials. It is always worth looking up the accreditation agency to ensure it is legitimate itself.
• Admissions. What are the criteria to join the PhD program? Do you have to submit transcripts, go through an interview process, submit an implication that includes referral letters? If not, it is a good indication that the organization is a diploma mill that is only interested in your credit card.
• Studies. Will you need to conduct actual research, work under a supervisor, submit a thesis, and defend it at the end of your PhD, or do you only need to maybe watch a few pre-recorded videos, or submit some work that will not be evaluated?
• Duration. How long will you need to study for the PhD? Depending on the country, a PhD can take anywhere between three and six years, sometimes longer. If the organization promises a fast turnaround for the obtention of your doctorate, this is a massive red flag.
• Faculty. Who are the members of the academic team? All reputable universities have very transparent registries of their staff, so you can have a look at their publications, and even email them to discuss your PhD project. Diploma mills will have fake team members with stock photos, and of course no academic publications to their names.

A lot of universities, even the smaller ones, will have a Wikipedia page where you can read about their history, departments, and alumni. This is not in of itself a guarantee that you are looking at a legitimate institution, but you should be extra careful when the only material you can find about an organization is the one they have published themselves.

Now that you are sure that you are looking at a legitimate institution, let’s figure out what research areas would be good candidates for pursuing an online doctorate.

Research areas compatible with an online doctorate

While in the vast majority of cases, it is more productive to be working on-site with your team, including your supervisors, there are three main factors that make an online PhD a reasonable option.

• All the research can be conducted online. This is obviously the most important factor. Psychology, philosophy, history, mathematics, sociology, theoretical physics, and marketing are some examples of fields where you may be able to conduct all of your research online, without impacting the quality of your output. Focus groups, interviews, content analysis, questionnaires and ethnography are all methods that can be used online. The research could also be done by accessing online librairies, conducting web-based experiments, or analyzing existing datasets. 
• The research benefits from being conducted off-campus. In some cases, you may actually need to be away from campus to conduct your research! Many scientists who work in anthropology, botany, or animal studies need to study their subjects in their environments. They spend their time in the field, whether they collect data, and rarely spend time on campus.
• The research does not require in-person resources. Will you need access to a laboratory or expensive equipment that you cannot acquire on your own? If you want to conduct brain scanning experiments, an MRI machine costs between $300,000 and $1 million, and even if you somehow had access to that kind of money, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to fit one in your living room. In contrast, if you are doing computer neuroscience, you may be able to build computational models of the brain from your laptop, without needing access to a laboratory.

Again, a PhD is an intense endeavor, and most PhD candidates will benefit from having in-person interactions with their team, but an online PhD is feasible if some of these criteria are met.

How to apply to an online doctorate

The process should be fairly similar to applying to an in-person PhD program. First, you need to identify an area of research that is compatible with being conducted fully online and does not require in-person resources. Bonus points if the research actually benefits from being conducted off-campus.Once you have an area of research in mind, you need to find a relevant PhD program.

In some cases, you will need to first find a supervisor that is willing to work with you. Go through the university’s directory and email potential supervisors, explaining what your research interests are, sharing your previous experience and why you think they would be a good match as a supervisor. Once you have a supervisor onboard, they will walk you through the application process.

In other cases, you will be assigned a supervisor once accepted onto the PhD program. Then, it’s just a matter of following the instructions on the university’s website, which will often require you to upload your transcripts from previous studies as well as one or several letters of referral.

You will often have to go through some interviews with faculty members, who will assess whether you would be a good fit for the program and for academic research in general. These are very similar to job interviews.

Only once you are done with the application process and have been extended an offer will you be asked to pay for your fees — and it is very common for the payment to only be required after a few months of studies, rather than before you start. Again, pay attention to red flags when applying for an online PhD, as there are many scams out there that only care about getting you to pay the fees.

Finding an online doctorate is not hard. A quick search will bring up hundreds of results. Finding an online doctorate from a reputable university where you will conduct original research and connect with a network of academics in your field is much harder. However, many universities are now offering the option to get a doctorate online, provided that your research project is compatible.

• Online PhD in Counseling (Oregon State University)
• PhD by Distance Health in Social Science (University of Edinburgh)

• PhD by Distance Learning, Life and Environmental Sciences (University of Birmingham)
• Doctor of Philosophy in General Psychology, Online or Evening Program (Grand Canyon University)
• PhD by Distance Learning, Environment and Arts, Humanities and Cultures (University of Leeds)
• Online Doctor of Nursing Practice (University of Pittsburgh)

In addition, the Open University offers many PhD degrees by distance learning in areas as varied as psychology, philosophy, design, economics, engineering, history, law, sociology, geography, music, and mathematics.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and all of these universities are based in the United States or the United Kingdom. It is just a way to demonstrate that you can obtain an online doctorate without being scammed by a diploma mill.

Not all of these universities have the same reputation. Some are non-profit organizations, others are for-profit and may have more lenient admission criteria, but all of them are accredited which means that you will obtain a legitimate online doctorate. They also all have a Wikipedia page where you can read about their research and their alumni.

Now, as it is very unlikely that you will obtain funding for an online doctorate, you still need to ask yourself whether the considerable amount of time, energy, and money you will need to invest is worth it to achieve your goals. There are many other ways to conduct research and contribute new knowledge to the world, such as working as a researcher for a private company or as an independent researcher.

Pursuing a doctorate, whether online or in person, is a massive commitment. Whatever decision you make, take your time to evaluate the pros and cons, and to consider alternative paths that may be less costly, and still a lot of fun!

So how exactly does an online doctorate work?

Going Virtual: How It (Typically) Works

The online doctorate program is really a hybrid version of the traditional campus experience. Online students engage with professors and coursework through various formats—including webcasts, emails, messaging apps and semi-annual campus visits.

While every program is different, the process typically follows a similar structure. If you choose to get a doctorate online, here’s what you can expect:

• Choose a program. Work with your academic advisor to build the program that is right for your career goals and objectives.
• Determine your bandwidth. Inventory your time and priorities to identify how much time you will need to complete your program.
• Select a path. Based on your availability and pace, you’ll identify how many credit hours you will take each semester.
• Enroll in your courses. Each semester, you’ll join the online classes that will keep you on pace to earn your degree.
• Get notified about current lectures and assignments. When a new lecture is available, you’ll be notified via email. Then, it’s up to you.
• Download lectures and watch on-demand. Classes are typically delivered in a webinar-style format, complete with screen shares and presentation slides. Some programs utilize a synchronous format that requires students to log in and watch at a defined time. Others use an on-demand format. You watch them when you want, where you want, as long as you are able to keep pace with the schedule.
• Use tools to enrich your education. Leverage tools like Slack, Skype or other messaging platforms to communicate with professors, research assistants and advisors.
• Complete research assignments and submit via portal or email. As you complete the associated work with a lecture or course, you’ll submit to your professor for input and reaction.
• Visit campus for important events. Depending on the program you choose, you’ll likely be required to visit the campus for a group class or meeting on a semi-annual basis.

It is possible to get your doctorate online—and the online experience offers several advantages to busy individuals. But, the real question to ask is:

The Online Debate: 4 Big Myths About Online Doctoral Degrees

Let’s start to answer that question by dispelling some myths.

As the popularity of online programs has risen, so has skepticism. It may be that the program sounds too good to be true, or it may be that they’ve heard too many “diploma mill” horror stories—for a variety of reasons, people tend to write off the online doctorate before they really research it.

The most common myths people believe about doctorates are:

• They are only given out by degree mills. While there are certainly degree mills out there offering paper degrees for money, they aren’t the only ones—nor are they in the majority. There are plenty of reputable, regionally accredited institutions taking their doctorates online.
• They are an easy way to earn a doctorate. While the program may require less face-time or physical presence on a campus, accredited programs are by no means a shortcut to earn your degree. You’ll still be expected to research, write your dissertation, and defend it successfully. In addition, the freedom comes with a challenge: learning to balance your time. No strict class schedule means you’ll need to have excellent time management skills. There’s no shortcut for that.
• Online degrees are not credible as traditional degrees. This is a false narrative. The key is to understand the accreditation of the online program. If the institution you choose is regionally accredited, the degree carries just as much weight as a degree from a traditional program.
• Online doctorates cost less. This also isn’t necessarily true. Just because a program is online doesn’t mean it will be cheaper. Online programs may also cause you to incur additional expenses if you need to invest in new technology (i.e., laptop and wi-fi).

Many people leave a doctorate on the table because they discount online programs early on—and fail to adhere to the standards and time-constraints of a traditional program. While there are certainly some outliers, online degrees offer a valid and creative solution to earn your doctorate degree.

The key is to pay attention to where you are choosing to get your degree.

Where Can I Get My Doctoral Degree Online?

So, you’ve settled on an online program as the preferred method for your doctorate.

The next question is where you’ll look to find a program. There are lots of institutions offering online or distance-learning doctorate programs—and it can be challenging to know where to invest your time, energy and money to ensure you’re getting the degree you want or need.

It helps to understand the guiding forces behind a school offering the program. A general rule of thumb is to understand how that type of school operates, how they make decisions, and what their chief priorities are. Online programs are offered by two types of schools: for-profit, and not-for-profit.

Most colleges offering online doctorates today are good and trustworthy institutions. But, there are some outliers who dangle the promise of a cheap, fast degree to get your dollars.

Avoid those types of programs at all cost.

5 Questions To Ask About an Online Doctoral Program

Once you’ve narrowed your choices down to a few select players, you’ll want to take a few additional steps to fully validate the program—and the outcome you can expect to receive. It’s best to meet or talk with the program chair and ask five big questions about their accreditation legitimacy and what the student experience will look like.

• Are you regionally or nationally accredited? And, what is your accreditation status?
• What is the student experience at this university like?
• What resources will I have in this program?
• Will I have any dissertation support? If so, what does it look like?
• How easily accessible is the faculty here?

If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of the accreditation agency, make sure it is recognized by one of two authorities on the matter: the  Council for Higher Education Accreditation  or the  Department of Education . The latter has a  College Navigator tool  allowing students to verify the accreditation of any school they may be considering.

Earning your doctorate is no easy task, especially if you’re a busy working professional balancing a career, home life and social calendar. An online doctorate program may be an ideal solution for you to earn your degree. With an online program, you are in greater control of both your schedule and academic pace.

However, paying for a doctoral degree program after earning, in most cases, a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree may be a barrier for some students.

Because online Ph.D. programs focus on educating leaders and innovators within a given field, many financial support options exist to help students afford doctoral degrees. This article highlights some of the most financially supportive Ph.D. programs in the U.S., including those that may offer students a path to earning a doctorate degree for free.

What You Should Know About Free Ph.D. Programs

Attending a Ph.D. program for free typically means that a student receives enough financial support from the institution and other sources to fully cover the cost of their doctoral degree, not that the school doesn’t charge tuition and fees for attendance. Students should carefully research any colleges that claim to offer online doctoral programs without charging tuition, as this is not common among legitimate post-secondary institutions.

The most common types of funding for online Ph.D. programs include fellowships, assistantships, grants, and scholarships.

Find a fully-funded Ph.D. program

As you research Ph.D. programs, you may encounter the phrase “fully funded.” This is how schools typically advertise free doctoral programs, as it means that students receive funding that completely covers their cost of attendance.

In fully-funded doctoral programs, students often receive assistantships or fellowships. Students who receive an assistantship are employed by their university, often as teaching assistants (TAs) for undergraduate classes or research assistants (RAs) to faculty or researchers. Arrangements vary by school and program, and students may either receive payment that they can use to pay for tuition and other expenses or have their tuition waived in exchange for their employment. In addition to maintaining academic standards, students must fulfill their work obligations to keep their assistantship.

Meanwhile, fellowships are awards given to students in doctoral programs to continue pursuing an academic focus or interest. Schools and outside organizations can offer fellowships, which are similar to research grants. Fellowships operate more like research grants in that students are expected to use this financial support to help them further their research goals, but there aren’t specific work expectations like there are for assistantships.

In both cases, students may also receive benefits like health insurance, a stipend for living expenses, and tuition waivers. However, it’s important to note that fully-funded Ph.D. programs tend to be highly competitive with limited availability. Students should inquire early about the eligibility criteria for available fellowships and assistantships to ensure they submit a strong application.

Seek out scholarships and grants

Scholarships and grants can also help students cover the cost of online doctoral programs. These types of funding are considered gift aid because they don’t have to be repaid and often don’t have requirements like assistantships or fellowships. Scholarships and grants are often awarded based on financial need, although some may be awarded to students based on academic or professional merit.

Students can obtain scholarships and grants for doctoral degree programs through their institution or outside sources, such as professional organizations, private non-profits and endowments, federal and state governments, and community and religious groups.

In order to obtain need-based aid, students must typically submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students should consult with their school’s financial aid office to learn more about available scholarship and grant opportunities.

Here are a couple examples to give you an idea of exactly how these awards work for online doctoral programs:

CAPCSD Ph.D. Scholarships Every year, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders awards $20,000 to students enrolled in a Ph.D. program for communication sciences and disorders. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a summary of their research dissertation plan, and a letter of support from their research advisor signed by the program director. Russell Sage Foundation Dissertation Research Grants This award of up to $10,000 is for students in doctoral programs who are researching topics related to the Russell Sage Foundation’s mission of improving social and living conditions in the United States. These funds must be used specifically for dissertation research expenses, such as study participant incentives, laboratory costs, and travel.

Avoid non-accredited degree mills

When prioritizing free or low-cost Ph.D. programs, it’s important to also be mindful of the quality and legitimacy of the institutions you’re considering.

Make sure that any private college you’re considering is a nonprofit organization. Many private for-profit organizations that offer online doctoral programs, especially those claiming “free” doctoral degree programs, are actually degree mills. This means they operate like a postsecondary institution even though they don’t have the proper accreditation to award legitimate doctoral degrees .

Degree mills focus more on generating revenue than providing high-quality education. They often attract users by advertising free tuition, only to charge an assortment of other fees (exam fees, graduation fees, etc.). They also often lack qualified faculty, effective curriculums, and sufficient support staff.

Says Villagomez, “Attending a non-accredited college or degree mill can negatively impact a student’s post-graduate opportunities, including employment and professional licensure, as many employers don’t recognize degrees from these types of schools.”

There are a few ways to determine whether a doctoral program is legitimate. Look up the doctoral program online for information about accreditation and non-profit or for-profit status. You can independently verify this information using the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs (DAPIP). Look for the names of regional accrediting organizations . Colleges approved by one of these organizations are held to strict standards for academic quality, ensuring that students will be prepared to enter their chosen field upon graduation.

An additional clue is the URL of the school’s website. Ensure that the school’s domain name ends in “.edu,” as this signifies it is a recognized educational institution. Other suffixes, such as “.org” or “.com,” indicate that the school is likely for-profit and may lack accreditation.

Ensuring that you have the best team by your side for your dissertation is also imperative. You want to evaluate the strength of a department’s faculty and assess how you will stay connected with them depending on the program setting.”

How much does an online Ph.D. degree program cost?

There are several factors that determine how much an online Ph.D. degree can cost, including the type of school a student attends and how much financial support they receive.

According to the Education Data Initiative , as of 2023, the average cost of a Ph.D. at a public university was $72,990, while students at private institutions paid an average of $101,810 for their doctoral degrees.

As noted above, there are many options students can explore to lower the cost of their Ph.D. degrees. Earning an online degree can also save students money, as it allows students to live in an area with a lower cost of living, eliminates transportation costs like gas and parking, and provides more flexibility so students can continue to work while earning their degree.

How long does it take to earn an online Ph.D. degree?

The duration of Ph.D. programs varies widely, as they often include flexible timeframes for completing all course and dissertation requirements. According to the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), as of 2020, the average completion time for a doctorate degree was about eight years. Doctorate degrees in physical and earth sciences took the least amount of time to complete, with an average of 6.3 years. Meanwhile, doctorate degrees in education took, on average, 12 years to complete.

Students should consult with an admissions counselor or program representative from potential programs to get more specific information on the length of time they can expect to be in their Ph.D. program.

Is an online Ph.D. degree worth it?

“Earning an online Ph.D. can provide students with opportunities to advance their careers, develop expertise in their chosen fields, and produce scholarly research,” Villagomez says. “However, determining its worth depends on a student’s personal needs, educational goals, and potential career outcomes. I recommend students evaluate those variables seriously to make an informed decision before pursuing this degree.

Villagomez also points out that, even if students are attending a Ph.D. program for free, earning a doctorate still requires a significant time investment. “These types of programs often require a minimum commitment of five years, although they can often extend beyond that. But longer graduate programs may not always equate to a higher return on investment.” Students should research the earning potential for the career or job they plan to pursue and compare that to the financial and time investment required for a Ph.D. program to help them determine if a program is worth it.

While most of those studying for a PhD take the PhD by thesis pathway, there are five viable routes to achieving a Doctorate, with both full-time and part-time options available

This is the most common means of getting a Doctorate. Over the three or four years of research at university, your PhD supervisor will support you as you aim to produce a thesis based on your research proposal .

A thesis is typically 60,000-90,000 words in length - although this can vary between institutions. For instance, the University of Glasgow's College of Social Sciences expects a thesis to be 70,000 to 100,000 words including references, bibliography and appendices, while the University of Cambridge has set an upper limit of 80,000 words.

Once completed, you'll need to defend your PhD thesis in front of a panel of examiners during your viva voce .

Doctorate by publication

This route involves submitting previously published work - such as books, book chapters and journal articles, which together form a coherent body of work and show evidence of an original contribution to a particular field of study.

The PhD by publication route is often taken by mid-career academics that haven't had the opportunity to undertake a standard Doctorate degree.

Generally, a minimum of five to eight published pieces are required, but this varies between institutions and depends on their length. The published work will be assessed to the same rigorous standards as a traditional PhD by thesis.

You must also provide a written supporting statement, which typically ranges from 5,000 to 15,000 words.

Some universities accept only their own graduates for a PhD by publication, while others restrict this route to their academic staff. In general, you should have graduated from your first degree at least seven years ago to be eligible.

For example, The University of Manchester has published its own Guidance for the PhD By Published Work , with eligibility only extending to current members of staff.

Professional Doctorate

This type of Doctorate includes a significant taught component and a smaller research project, and is geared primarily towards current professionals in vocational sectors such as:

• engineering and manufacturing
• teaching and education .

Professional Doctorates are often taken on a part-time basis and can last between two and eight years. Like their standard PhD counterparts, they usually begin in October or January.

While you won't typically be looking to get an academic job , your research is expected to contribute to theory as well as professional practice. Projects often revolve around a real-life issue that affects your employer.

Several professional Doctorates, such as the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy), are accredited by a professional body - for instance, the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and The British Psychological Society (BPS) - and may also lead to a professional qualification .

Common titles for graduates of professional Doctorate degrees include:

• Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
• Doctor of Education (EdD)
• Doctor of Engineering (EngD)
• Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Unlike many professional Doctorates, the EngD is typically offered as a full-time course and is aimed at young engineering graduates with little or no professional experience.

Integrated PhD

This four-year qualification, also known as the New Route PhD, involves studying a one-year research Masters degree (MRes) before progressing onto a three-year PhD.

Offered by a select number of universities across the UK, integrated PhDs are supported by the government and the British Council through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) .

The integrated PhD involves a combination of taught materials, practical experience and advanced research. This allows you to learn subject-specific methodologies, while building the transferable skills that will enable you to become a leader in your chosen profession.

Institutions can also develop personalised integrated PhD programmes to meet each student's needs. For example, universities may offer you the opportunity to gain a postgraduate certificate (PGCert) in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education - perfect if you're considering a career as a higher education lecturer .

Online/distance learning PhD

As PhDs are based primarily on independent research rather than time spent in lectures and seminars, distance learning has always been a viable route for many Doctoral students.

PhDs by distance learning offered by course providers such as The Open University are therefore a good option to consider if you've got family or work commitments or are an international student - as this gives you the chance to undertake Doctoral research without having to live close to your chosen institution. It's also a suitable mode of study if your subject requires you to be based in a specific location away from the university.

For the most part, you'll be in touch with your supervisor by phone, email or Skype/Zoom. You'll need to bear in mind that even if you opt for this form of research, you'll generally still need to attend university for one or two weeks of each academic year for meetings and to receive research skills training. Your final exam may be undertaken either face-to-face or virtually.

With online PhDs, you can usually register as a full or part-time student. The level of fees you pay varies between institutions - some charge the same as for a standard PhD while others offer a reduced rate.

Check that any funding you plan to apply for is available to distance learning students, as this isn't always the case.

How the PhD Program Works

Program Overview

Completing your doctorate at Wharton requires 5 years of full-time study. The first 2 years in the program prepare you for admission to candidacy by taking courses, qualifying exams, and starting research projects. In the last few years, you are primarily conducting research full-time including writing and defending your doctoral dissertation.

Admission to candidacy.

You begin by taking courses required for your program of study. All programs requires a preliminary exam, which may be either oral or written.

Some programs may have further requirements, such as an additional exam or research paper. If you enter with a master’s degree or other transfer credit, you may satisfy the formal course requirements more quickly.

The Doctoral Dissertation

Upon successful completion of coursework and passing a preliminary examination, you are admitted to candidacy for the dissertation phase of your studies.

Your doctoral dissertation should contain original research that meets standards for published scholarship in your field. You are expected to be an expert in the topic you choose to research.

You are admitted to candidacy for the dissertation phase of your studies upon successful completion of coursework and passing a preliminary examination, but you can start thinking about and working on research of relevance at any time.

The dissertation process culminates with a “defense,” in which you defend the proposal orally before your dissertation committee.

While working on your dissertation, you interact extensively with Wharton faculty. Together with interested faculty, you create your own research community that includes your dissertation advisor and dissertation committee.

Ph.D. Graduate Program in Psychological Sciences and Human Development

Introduction.

The Graduate Field of Psychological Sciences and Human Development (PSYHD)  includes faculty members from departments across the university including Psychology, Neurobiology and Behavior, Communication, and Philosophy.  See below for more on the Cornell Field System. The dominant strengths of the PSYHD Field lie in four broadly defined areas: Cognition , Development ,  Neuroscience , and Social and Personality . The goal of the Field is to educate students to become researchers, scholars, and teachers who will contribute to the future of psychology as a scientific discipline in academic or other research-oriented settings.

Our program prepares students for research and teaching careers in academic life, work in government agencies, and careers in industry or other public and private sectors.  We encourage you to explore the history of our M.A. and Ph.D. theses through the  Cornell University Theses/Dissertations guide .

Please note that we do not offer training in clinical psychology, counseling, school psychology, community psychology, industrial psychology, or clinical neuropsychology.  Applicants with primary interests in these subjects are not admitted.

We offer three Ph.D. Degrees:

The Ph.D. program in PSYHD is a research focused, apprentice-styled (mentor-mentee) graduate program.  The curriculum and requirements are designed for a 5 year program; the median time to complete the Ph.D. is 5.5 years.

Student progress is supervised by a Primary Advisor who serves as the Chair of a Special Committee comprised of two faculty members, typically within the Psychological Sciences and Human Development graduate field . Prospective students should investigate the faculty members within the PSYHD field, and particularly within the Department of Psychology, whose research interests are compatible with the students' interests.  Prospective students for the Ph.D. program should then contact those faculty directly before applying.

• Three letters of recommendation , with a fourth letter optional, which your recommenders will upload to the application.

Academic Statement of Purpose

Describe (within 1000 words) the substantive research questions you are interested in pursuing during your graduate studies, and explain how our program would help you achieve your intellectual goals. Additionally, detail your academic background, intellectual interests and any training or research experience you have received that you believe has prepared you for our program. Within your statement, please also identify specific faculty members whose research interests align with your own interests.

Personal statement of interest

Please describe (within 1000 words) how your personal background and experiences influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Additionally, provide insight on your potential to contribute to a community of inclusion, belonging, and respect where scholars representing diverse backgrounds, perspectives, abilities, and experiences can learn and work productively and positively together. We also encourage you to include information on any of the following areas:

• How your personal, academic, and/or professional experiences demonstrate your ability to be both persistent and resilient especially when navigating challenging circumstances.
• How you engage with others and have facilitated and/or participated in productive teams.
• How you have experienced or come to understand the barriers faced by others whose experiences and backgrounds may differ from your own.

The Field Structure

At Cornell, graduate study is organized using a field structure.   Fields are composed of faculty members from a number of departments who come together around a shared intellectual interest, and may draw from different campuses or colleges.  Graduate students are admitted to fields of study.  Within each field, they select major and minor subjects, which are research interests or concentrations.

Fields span departments and even disciplines.  It’s possible for a student in the field of economics to include faculty on his or her special committee from industrial labor and economics, civil and environmental engineering, and sociology, along with the more traditional economics and management.

Course Overview

The Norwich Medical School Graduate Entry Medicine course offers an exciting and innovative four-year pathway to becoming a doctor. 

Incorporating the latest medical educational techniques, our dynamic course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in your future medical career and emerge as a leading doctor. 

You’ll be taught through a combination of interactive face-to-face sessions, carefully curated online resources, and small group work. Our spiral curriculum ensures you encounter key material multiple times, reinforcing and deepening your learning throughout the course. 

From the very beginning of your studies and throughout the course, as a graduate medical student, you’ll spend time with patients, immersing yourself in patient care. In your third year, you’ll undertake a transformative 20-week longitudinal integrated clerkship placement, where you’ll be embedded within a General Practice. This opportunity allows you to follow a cohort of patients and gain a profound understanding of the factors influencing their health. 

Placements are strategically located at three hubs across Norfolk and Waveney (King’s Lynn, Great Yarmouth, and Norwich), ensuring you become deeply embedded in the community. This approach not only enhances your direct patient care experience but also involves you in quality improvement projects aimed at elevating local healthcare. During the admissions process, we’ll work with you to determine your preferred placement hub, aligning your training with your career goals. 

Accreditations

Accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC), this primary medical qualification entitles the holder to apply to the GMC for registration to practise medicine in the UK.   

Study and Modules

At the start of the course, you’ll learn what it means to be a doctor and be given an overview of the journey you’re going to be undertaking over the next four years.   

During year 1, you’ll learn about “The human body in health”. You’ll cover each of the body systems including the underlying biomedical and social science. You’ll develop skills in clinical examinations and procedures relevant to the system.  

An introduction to all areas of professional knowledge will also be covered with a focus on maintaining and preventing ill health. Year 1 will also include general practice placement.    

As part of this year, you’ll be trained as a Health Care Assistant and become embedded in a healthcare team. This experience will allow you to learn key skills and gain an understanding of the roles of different members of the multi-disciplinary team in patient care. As a result of completing this training, you’ll have the opportunity to work as a health care assistant throughout the course.   

Compulsory Modules

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.

Teaching and Learning

In year 1, you’ll complete three modules covering “The Human Body in Health’ theme.  You’ll receive an introduction to Medicine and Health care, the NHS, as well an introduction to all areas of professional knowledge. You’ll study core knowledge and concepts focused on maintaining and preventing ill health as well as covering essential topics of anatomy, biochemistry and cell biology, homeostasis, pharmacology, physiology, human genetics and genomics, infection and microbiology, immunology, and nutrition, and their application to the system of the body. You’ll also be introduced to consultation skills training. In line with GMC recommendations and best practice, early patient contact is embedded in year 1.   

“The human body in disease”, returns to each of the body systems but with a focus on the pathological processes, diseases and presentations. This will include returning to clinical examinations and learning the abnormal findings and their significance. There will be 12 weeks of integrated clinical placement where you’ll gain hands-on experience of the conditions you have been studying. 

THE HUMAN BODY IN DISEASE 1

As you move into year 2, you’ll cover the fundamentals of the human body in disease and build on your learning from year 1. Body systems will be considered and will include pathology, clinical presentations, investigation and management and abnormal clinical examination. Clinical placements are full integrated.   

‘Health across the life course’ will be primarily based in placement and will be a combination of a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship and Health Improvement Project. Unlike traditional blocks of rotational placement, you’ll become embedded within a community placement for around 20 weeks, working with a range of patient groups and developing multiple core competencies during this period.   

HEALTH ACROSS THE LIFE COURSE 1

The majority of year 3 will be placement-based as you complete the Longitudinal-Integrated Clerkship placement and Quality Improvement Plan. Throughout this module, you’ll be in one General Practice setting and will be fully embedded, adopting an apprenticeship style approach to learning. You’ll deepen your understanding of clinical medicine through seeing undifferentiated patients, undertaking assessment and forming a management plan which will then be discussed with a GP tutor before implementation. Throughout the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship, you’ll also undertake a Quality Improvement Plan, to improve practice and seek ways to continually improve the use and prioritisation of resources. 

‘Complexity in health’ will focus on preparing you for life as a doctor as well as the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), including a Student Assistantship placement. You’ll spend time on medical and surgical wards, as well as acute and emergency care. This will ensure you’re well prepared and confident when you start work as a foundation year doctor. 

COMPLEXITY IN HEALTH 1

Complexity in health 2, complexity in health 3.

Complexity in Health will build on previous learning and prepare you for Foundation years and the Medical Licensing Assessment. As well as the Student Assistantship, you’ll cover areas such as anaphylaxis, cardiorespiratory arrest, deteriorating patient, overdose, positing, trauma and haemorrhage.  The use of simulation and virtual reality will enhance your campus learning.  

Entry Requirements

UK fee-paying students. The entry point is in September each year.    You should hold or be working towards the specified English and Mathematics requirements, GCSE requirements and one of the examples of typical entry qualifications listed below. 

Applicants must hold or be working towards GCSEs in a minimum of five subjects at grade 5 or B or above including Mathematics, English Language and one science subject. GCSE resits are accepted.

If Methods of Mathematics & Application of Mathematics are taken, we require both. They will be considered as a single grade for screening purposes as together they are equivalent to the full Mathematics GCSE.

There is no A level requirement

Bachelor’s Degree

If you do not meet our minimum requirements for Graduate entry, you may consider the Postgraduate MSc Physician Associate Studies

course which can lead to working alongside doctors in a healthcare setting.

Applicants who have previously studied or are currently studying at a Medical School (UK or International) will not be considered for entry.

Applicants must sit the GAMSAT prior to applying. Scores are valid for two years so results from September 2023 are valid for applications for 2024 and 2025 entrance. 

How do we use the GAMSAT?

UEA does not have a cut off score. A high score is advantageous; a low score does not disqualify an applicant from consideration. 

- The overall GAMSAT score is used to rank applicants for selection to interview. - The overall GAMSAT score is used alongside the interview score to rank and select applicants to whom an offer is made.

UCAT for 2025 entry only

For 2025 entry only, we will consider applicants who will have achieved a Bachelor degree in a Bioscience subject alongside taking the UCAT in the summer before applying. Accepted Bioscience subjects are: 

- Biomedical Sciences - Physiology - Biochemistry - Pharmacology - Neuroscience - Molecular Genetics - Molecular Biology - Pharmacy

How do we use the UCAT?

-    The overall UCAT score is used to rank applicants for selection for interview. -    The overall UCAT score is used alongside the interview score to rank and select applicants to whom an offer is made. -    The SJT component score is included within the interview score.

Applications from UK (home) fee paying students whose first language is not English are welcome. We may require evidence of proficiency in English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading):   

IELTS:  7.5  overall (minimum  7.0  in all components) 

We also accept a number of other English language tests. Review our  English Language Equivalencies  for a list of example qualifications that we may accept to meet this requirement.  

Test dates should be within two years of the course start date.

Gap Years - If applying with achieved qualifications, applicants must include in their personal statement what they have been doing or what they plan to do, during any gaps in education.

Previous Degree Study - Applications from those currently studying in higher education will only be considered if the qualification will be completed by 31 August 2025. This includes Master degrees and PhD degrees. 

Applicants in the first or second year of a degree will not be considered. Applicants who have started a degree but not completed it successfully, will not be considered.

We are unable to accept transfer students onto our Medicine degree due to the integrated nature of the course. 

Applicants who have previously studied or are currently studying at a Medical School (UK or International) will not be considered for entry. 

Fee Status - This course is open to UK (home) fee payers only. 

Programme Conditions - Offers to successful applicants will be subject to a successful interview, a satisfactory occupational health check, including evidence of appropriate immunisations. As this course includes patient facing placements in a health or social care setting and these are a mandatory component of the course, you will need to comply with the placement vaccination policy. Failure to meet the placement vaccination policy may prevent you from joining the course or may lead to your withdrawal from the course in the future. Future employment may also be subject to this condition.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) - Applicants will also be required to have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. In the interests of patient and public safety, we may share some of the information provided in your application form with the Medical Schools Council in order to verify your fitness to practise. Where applicable an Overseas Police Check may be required. If a fitness to practise finding is made against you in the future, this information and a copy of the decision against you will also be stored on the Excluded Students Database maintained by the Medical Schools Council. The database is accessible only to other medical schools in the UK and the General Medical Council. It is used only for proper fitness to practise purposes to protect patients and the public.

Medical Students Fitness Standards - Further information regarding requirements for medical students in relation to blood born infectious diseases, and information on Medical Students Fitness Standards is available. Any offer holder with a current or past history of health conditions (physical or mental health) should tell occupational health about any health conditions they have, and may be subject to an early occupational health check, for the following reasons:

• Medical schools have a duty to support their students, but students must help the school to do this by being open and honest about their health. 
• Being open and trustworthy is an important part of being a doctor – patients and the GMC expect this of practising doctors. Failure by a doctor on the medical register to disclose a health matter that could potentially impact on patient safety is a breach of this duty. 
• A student should understand that their ill health could put their ability to study at risk. Where a student has this understanding – and shows this by getting help and support – their health condition rarely prevents them from completing the course. One way to demonstrate understanding from the start is for a student to declare whether they will need additional support when they begin their course.

Norwich Medical School will consider all requests for adjustments in line with the UK Equality Act 2010. Any student can graduate providing they are well enough to complete the course; they have no student fitness to practice concerns (having a health condition or disability alone is not a fitness to practice concern); they have met all the Outcomes for graduates, with adjustments to the mode of assessment as needed.  Further guidance and advice specific to undergraduate medicine courses, including clinical exams, can be obtained via [email protected]. Progression and Continuation - Once enrolled onto your course at UEA, your progression and continuation (which may include your eligibility for study abroad, overseas experience, placement, or year in industry opportunities) is contingent on meeting the assessment requirements which are relevant to the course on which you are enrolled. 

After the Course - Postgraduate Foundation training and beyond. 

Interviews are Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format and will be held on campus. All applicants will be required to attend an interview on campus.

Please note that we do not disclose interview questions. We look for applicants to demonstrate at interview:

• An acceptable approach to decision making when given incomplete or conflicting information
• The ability to learn and work effectively in partnership
• A caring and supportive attitude
• An empathetic and caring approach
• Honesty, integrity and personal effectiveness
• Insight into Medicine as a career and personal suitability for the profession 
• Insight into health needs in the Norfolk and Waveney population.

We will email invitations to applicants who are selected for interview. Interviews will take place between November and February.

Work Experience - If you are invited to interview you are required to provide two examples of relevant work experience which have informed your decision to study Medicine.

This course will include practice placement in a variety of settings that include hospitals, community services, general practice, social services and voluntary or private organisations. Placements are typically allocated throughout the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. Please refer to the Course Overview for further information.

Deferred entry is not permitted.

Our  Admissions Policy applies to the admissions of all undergraduate applicants.

Not required for applicants taking the GAMSAT. Recent study within the last five years is required for applicants presenting with a Bioscience degree and taking the UCAT (2025 entry only).

Applicants must be aged 18 or over by the start date of this course. This is owing to the integrated nature of placements within the first year of study and safeguarding implications. 

Briefly, all on-time applications proceed to primary screening, where checks are made to see that applicants meet, or are predicted to meet, our minimum academic entry criteria, have a satisfactory personal statement and reference and hold either a valid GAMSAT test result OR applicants with a Bioscience degree who have not taken the GAMSAT, hold a valid UCAT test result. Applicants who are presenting with a Bioscience degree and have taken the GAMSAT cannot choose to apply with a UCAT score instead. Applicants are then invited to interview (from late December/January onwards). 

If the number of applications received, exceed the number of interview places available, those meeting primary screening requirements may also undergo secondary screening. Secondary screening will take place for each pool of applicants: 1)  The overall GAMAT score may be ranked against the GAMSAT applicant cohort, with the strongest applicants invited to interview.   2)  The overall UCAT score may be ranked against the UCAT applicant cohort, with the strongest applicants invited to interview.

Following the completion of interviews, interviewed applicants are ranked in each pool (by interview scores and GAMSAT overall score OR by interview scores including the SJT band score and UCAT overall score ) within the applicant cohort. The interview score and overall GAMSAT score OR interview score including SJT Band score and overall UCAT score is weighted equally and the top ranking applicants from each pool will receive offers.  

All graduates will enter the NHS Foundation programme and places are developed to meet medical student numbers in training. Our aspiration will be to see a large percentage stay within the Norfolk and Waveney area and NHSE will allocate a percentage of Foundation places in Norfolk and Waveney to graduates from this course.  Admissions approach To ensure we meet the aim to help address workforce challenges in Norfolk and Waveney, we expect 50% of places will be allocated to candidates with an established connection to Norfolk and Waveney, with the remaining 50% being open to graduates from other regions. Applicants will be classified as having an established connection to Norfolk and Waveney based on living in one of the following postal codes:

•     Any NR postcode + PE12, PE13, PE14, PE34, PE38, PE30, PE32, PE31, PE36, PE37, PE35, PE33, PE15, IP26, IP25, IP27, IP24, IP20, IP22, IP18, IP19, IP20 evidenced in the home address on the UCAS application.

What if there is a mistake on my application?

Following the closing date, any errors or omissions should be notified to the Admissions Service immediately for consideration and verified by an official letter from your University. However, if notification is made after 15 October, we reserve the right not to consider the application further. 

What if my predicted grades change?   

Your application will be processed using the information provided on your UCAS form. Any changes in predicted grades will not be considered once processing has commenced following the UCAS deadline. 

Can I send in additional supporting documents? 

Only information submitted on the UCAS form will be considered unless supplementary information is requested by the Admissions Team. Factual errors on the form should be notified to the Admissions Service as soon as possible but additional information provided, or errors highlighted after submission of the UCAS form cannot be considered. Please note that we are unable to accept any unsolicited additional references or CVs.

How do I report extenuating circumstances? 

These should be indicated on the UCAS application. Supporting evidence may be requested. Please note that adverse events potentially impacting on performance at degree classification, should be notified to the relevant examination board.

OpenAI Unveils New ChatGPT That Can Reason Through Math and Science

Online chatbots like ChatGPT from OpenAI and Gemini from Google sometimes struggle with simple math problems . The computer code they generate is often buggy and incomplete. From time to time, they even make stuff up .

On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled a new version of ChatGPT that could alleviate these flaws. The company said the chatbot, underpinned by new artificial intelligence technology called OpenAI o1, could “reason” through tasks involving math, coding and science.

“With previous models like ChatGPT, you ask them a question and they immediately start responding,” said Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist. “This model can take its time. It can think through the problem — in English — and try to break it down and look for angles in an effort to provide the best answer.”

In a demonstration for The New York Times, Dr. Pachocki and Szymon Sidor, an OpenAI technical fellow, showed the chatbot solving an acrostic, a kind of word puzzle that is significantly more complex than an ordinary crossword puzzle. The chatbot also answered a Ph.D.-level chemistry question and diagnosed an illness based on a detailed report about a patient’s symptoms and history.

The new technology is part of a wider effort to build A.I. that can reason through complex tasks. Companies like Google and Meta are building similar technologies, while Microsoft and its subsidiary GitHub are working to incorporate OpenAI’s new system into their products.
