Microsoft Sam TTS Generator is an online interface for part of Microsoft Speech API 4.0 which was released in 1998.

• Select your voice. Note that BonziBUDDY voice is actually an "Adult Male #2" with a specific pitch and speed.
• Select your pitch and speed. All voices have lower and upper pitch and speed limits.
• Enter your text and press "Say it". Wait for generated audio appear in audio player. It should be done nearly instantly, as the interface tries to generate audio at x16777215 real-time.
• To save generated audio, right click on audio player and press "Save audio as..."

It uses your browser's built-in voice synthesis technology, and so the voices will differ depending on the browser that you're using. You can download the audio as a file, but note that the downloaded voices may be different to your browser's voices because they are downloaded from an external text-to-speech server. If you don't like the externally-downloaded voice, you can use a recording app on your device to record the "system" or "internal" sound while you're playing the generated voice audio.

Want more voices? You can download the generated audio and then use voicechanger.io to add effects to the voice. For example, you can make the voice sound more robotic, or like a giant ogre, or an evil demon. You can even use it to reverse the generated audio, randomly distort the speed of the voice throughout the audio, add a scary ghost effect, or add an "anonymous hacker" effect to it.

Note: If the list of available text-to-speech voices is small, or all the voices sound the same, then you may need to install text-to-speech voices on your device. Many operating systems (including some versions of Android, for example) only come with one voice by default, and the others need to be downloaded in your device's settings. If you don't know how to install more voices, and you can't find a tutorial online, you can try downloading the audio with the download button instead. As mentioned above, the downloaded audio uses external voices which may be different to your device's local ones.

You're free to use the generated voices for any purpose - no attribution needed. You could use this website as a free voice over generator for narrating your videos in cases where don't want to use your real voice. You can also adjust the pitch of the voice to make it sound younger/older, and you can even adjust the rate/speed of the generated speech, so you can create a fast-talking high-pitched chipmunk voice if you want to.

Note: If you have offline-compatible voices installed on your device (check your system Text-To-Speech settings), then this web app works offline! Find the "add to homescreen" or "install" button in your browser to add a shortcut to this app in your home screen. And note that if you don't have an internet connection, or if for some reason the voice audio download isn't working for you, you can also use a recording app that records your devices "internal" or "system" sound.

What is sam.

Sam is a very small Text-To-Speech (TTS) program written in Javascript, that runs on most popular platforms. It is an adaption to Javascript of the speech software SAM (Software Automatic Mouth) for the Commodore C64 published in the year 1982 by Don't Ask Software (now SoftVoice, Inc.). It includes a Text-To-Phoneme converter called reciter and a Phoneme-To-Speech routine for the final output.

Currently compatible with Firefox, Chrome, Safari + iOS. The conversion was done by hand from the C source code by Sebastian Macke , and the refactored versions by Vidar Hokstad and 8BitPimp

Text-to-speech brain implant restores ALS patient’s voice

(Reuters) – A man with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who had lost his ability to speak has been able to communicate with a Blackrock Neurotech text-to-speech brain implant, researchers said in one of two new studies showing the promise of brain-computer interfaces for restoring speech in paralyzed patients.

The studies were published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. They provide “compelling new evidence of rapid progress in clinically viable, practical applications” of such devices for re-establishing communication after paralysis, Dr. Edward Chang, a neurosurgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the work, wrote in an editorial accompanying the studies.

Blackrock Neurotech, Medtronic, Synchron and Elon Musk’s Neuralink are among the companies working toward commercializing brain-computer interfaces.

The two studies each involved a single ALS patient with the fatal disease, one man and one woman. People with ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, experience progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain.

One patient was a 45-year-old man who had severe difficulty speaking and could be understood only by his care partner, with whom he communicated at an average rate of about seven words per minute, the researchers said. The rate of conversational English is approximately 160 words per minute.

The researchers implanted four microelectrode arrays manufactured by Blackrock Neurotech that recorded neural activity in areas of the brain associated with language and speech, using 256 intracortical electrodes – many more than had been targeted in earlier studies.

The decoder software could learn rare words and could be trained rapidly and recalibrated online, which has also not been shown previously, according to Chang.

By the second day of use, the patient was communicating using a 125,000-word vocabulary, according to the study. Decoded words were displayed on a screen and then vocalized with the use of text-to-speech software designed to sound like his pre-ALS voice.

Transcripts reveal that in a conversation with researchers, the patient said, “I was just giving you a hard time to lighten the mood. … Please indulge my attempts at humor because I really miss making jokes.”

“I have absolutely loved talking to my friends and family again,” the patient said, according to the transcripts. “When my symptoms started, my daughter was only 2 months old, and now she is 5, and she doesn’t remember what I sounded like before this disease took away my ability to talk normally, and she was a little shy at first but now is super proud that her father is a robot.”

Within 16 cumulative hours of use, the neuroprosthesis allowed a speech rate of 32 words per minute and incorrectly identified only 2.5% of attempted words, the researchers said.

By contrast, smartphone dictation apps have an approximate 5% word error rate, and able-bodied speakers have a 1-2% word error rate when reading a paragraph aloud, they added.

The patient involved in the second study was a woman who had received a more primitive neuroprosthesis seven years earlier, at age 58. The investigational device from Medtronic functioned well for six years and enabled her to communicate by clicks.

When the device became unreliable, no technical malfunction was found. Instead, progressive atrophy in her brain from ALS “ultimately rendered the brain-computer interface ineffective after years of successful use,” researchers said.

Future efforts may need to interface with different brain regions that may be less affected, or less prone to degeneration during disease progression, Chang wrote.

OpenAI has started rolling out an advanced voice mode for its blockbuster chatbot ChatGPT.

Sam Altman's company began rolling out the chatbot's new voice mode to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users in July. OpenAI said the new voice feature "offers more natural, real-time conversations, allows you to interrupt anytime, and senses and responds to your emotions."

The feature is part of OpenAI's wider GPT-4o launch, a new version of the bot that can hold conversations with users and has vision abilities. The chatbot's vision features are expected as a later release. 

The move is a big step for the future of AI-powered virtual assistants, which tech companies have been racing to develop.

Since its release in late 2022, hundreds of millions of people have experimented with the tool, which is already changing how the internet looks and feels to users.

Users have flocked to ChatGPT to improve their personal lives and boost productivity . Some workers have used the AI chatbot to develop code , write real estate listings , and create lesson plans, while others have made teaching the best ways to use ChatGPT a career all to itself.

ChatGPT offers dozens of plug-ins to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. An Expedia plug-in can help you book a trip, while one from OpenTable will nab you a dinner reservation. OpenAI has also launched Code Interpreter, a version of ChatGPT that can code and analyze data .

While the personal tone of conversations with an AI bot like ChatGPT can evoke the experience of chatting with a human, the technology that runs on large language model tools doesn't speak with sentience and doesn't "think" the way humans do. 

That means that even though ChatGPT can explain quantum physics or write a poem on command, a full AI takeover isn't exactly imminent , according to experts.

"There's a saying that an infinite number of monkeys will eventually give you Shakespeare," said Matthew Sag, a law professor at Emory University who studies copyright implications for training and using large language models like ChatGPT.

"There's a large number of monkeys here, giving you things that are impressive — but there is intrinsically a difference between the way that humans produce language, and the way that large language models do it," he said. 

Chatbots like ChatGPT are powered by large amounts of data and computing techniques to make predictions to string words together in a meaningful way. They not only tap into a vast amount of vocabulary and information, but also understand words in context. This helps them mimic speech patterns while dispatching an encyclopedic knowledge. 

Other tech companies like Google and Meta have developed their own large language model tools, which use programs that take in human prompts and devise sophisticated responses.

Despite the AI's impressive capabilities, some have called out OpenAI's chatbot for spewing misinformation , stealing personal data for training purposes , and even encouraging students to cheat and plagiarize on their assignments. 

Some efforts to use chatbots for real-world services have proved troubling. In 2023, the mental health company Koko came under fire after its founder wrote about how the company used GPT-3 in an experiment to reply to users. 

Koko cofounder Rob Morris hastened to clarify on Twitter that users weren't speaking directly to a chatbot, but that AI was used to "help craft" responses.

Figure’s new humanoid robot leverages OpenAI for natural speech conversations

Figure has unveiled its latest humanoid robot, the Figure 02. The system is — as its name helpfully suggests — the successor to the Figure 01 robot unveiled in 2023 . An initial teaser video is similar to those we’ve seen from other humanoids, echoing consumer electronics product videos, rather than a raw demo of the robot in action.

Another video released Tuesday showcases the robot’s slow, bent-leg gait across the floor of what looks to be the demo area constructed in the middle of Figure’s offices. Another two robots appear in the background, carting totes — the biggest out-of-the-box application for most of these humanoids.

The most notable addition this time out arrives by way of a longstanding partnership with OpenAI, which helped Figure raise a $675 million Series B back in February , valuing the South Bay firm at $2.6 billion.

One of the form factor’s key selling points is its ability to effectively slot alongside human co-workers on a factory floor — once the proper safety measures are in place, of course. Figure 02 is outfitted with speakers and microphones to speak and listen to people at work.

Models like ChatGPT and Google Gemini have been prized for their natural language capabilities, ushering in a new area of smart assistants and chatbots. Outfitting these systems with such capabilities is a no-brainer: Doing so helps humans instruct the robots, while at the same time adding a level of transparency to what the robot is doing at any given time.

Communication like this is doubly important when dealing with humanoid robots, as the systems are designed to wander freely without a safety cage. Despite their human-like design, it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that they’re still big, heavy and potentially dangerous pieces of moving metal. Combined with vision and proximity sensors, speech can be an important safety tool.

Figure certainly isn’t alone in this work. Late last year, Agility showcased the work it’s been doing to leverage generative AI for improved human-robot communication. The use of neural networks was a key focus for Google’s Everyday Robots team before it was shuttered. Elon Musk, meanwhile, is ostensibly in charge of both Grok AI and Optimus — two projects that will no doubt dovetail sooner rather than later.

For its part, OpenAI has hedged its bets a bit in the category. Prior to its Figure investment, the firm backed Norwegian firm 1X. Over the past year, however, Figure has become far buzzier in the industry. Its aforementioned Series B also included other top tech names like Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia and Intel Capital.

Figure recently began pilots with BMW . In June, the company debuted a video showcasing an earlier, tethered version of the robot autonomously performing tasks on the floor, with the help of neural networks.

The company notes that the 02 robot has already paid a visit to the automaker’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, facility for training and data collection purposes. We’re still very much in the early stages of these partnerships. Agility, Apptronik and Sanctuary AI have announced similar pilots with carmakers. Working on Teslas has been a key focus for Optimus since before it was Optimus, and Boston Dynamics-owner Hyundai has its sights set on humanoids in its own factories.

Communication is one piece of what Figure is referring to as a “ground-up hardware and software redesign” between 01 and 02. The list also includes six RGB cameras, coupled with an onboard visual language model, improved CPU/GPU computing and improved hands, with 16 degrees of freedom.

Hands have been their own hot-button topic in the humanoid robot world. There are differing opinions regarding how closely designers should hew to their human counterparts.

There’s a lot to be said for the nimbleness and dexterity of our appendages, though human-inspired hands have been criticized for their delicacy and a perceived over engineering. Figure, for its part, has been dedicated to using humanlike hands as its system’s end effectors.

We don’t have a timeline for a wider Figure 02 rollout, though the company is hinting at a broader future outside the warehouse/factory floor. “Figure’s robot combines the dexterity of the human form with advanced AI to perform a wide range of tasks across commercial applications and, in the near future, the home,” the company writes.
