The Ph.D. Program in the Department of Economics at Harvard is addressed to students of high promise who wish to prepare themselves in teaching and research in academia or for responsible positions in government, research organizations, or business enterprises. Students are expected to devote themselves full-time to their programs of study.

The program prepares students for productive and stimulating careers as economists. Courses and seminars offered by the department foster an intellectually active and stimulating environment. Each week, the department sponsors more than 15 different seminars on such topics as environmental economics, economic growth and development, monetary and fiscal policy, international economics, industrial organization, law and economics, behavioral economics, labor economics, and economic history. Top scholars from both domestic and international communities are often invited speakers at the seminars.  The Harvard community outside of the department functions as a strong and diverse resource. Students in the department are free to pursue research interests with scholars throughout the University. Faculty of the Harvard Law School, Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Business School, for example, are available to students for consultation, instruction, and research guidance. As a member of the Harvard community, students in the department can register for courses in the various schools and have access to the enormous library resources available through the University. There are over 90 separate library units at Harvard, with the total collections of books and pamphlets numbering over 13 million.  Both the department and the wider University draw some of the brightest students from around the world, which makes for a student body that is culturally diverse and likely unequaled in the range of intellectual interests of its members. These factors combine to add an important dimension to the educational process. Students are able to learn from one another, collaborate on research projects and publications, and form bonds that are not broken by distance once the degree is completed and professional responsibilities lead them in different directions.

  • What We Look For

The joint PhD Programs in Social Policy combine the disciplinary depth of a PhD in political science or sociology with multidisciplinary perspectives and problem-driven research on questions of social policy.

As a joint venture between the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences'  Government and Sociology departments and Harvard Kennedy School, the program is designed for students like you who have broad interests in social policy problems and solutions, spanning topics such as:

  • Economic inequality
  • Wealth distribution (including high-end wealth accumulation)
  • Race and ethnicity
  • Poverty and social mobility
  • Family dynamics
  • Workplace inequities
  • Health disparities
  • Crime and criminal punishment
  • Immigration
  • Local politics, neighborhoods, and segregation
  • Educational access and inequality
  • Political participation and political inequality

The “discipline-plus” model

The PhD Programs in Social Policy are grounded by a “discipline-plus” structure. You will build a strong foundation in either political science or sociology before embarking on a sequence of multidisciplinary seminars and advanced research in social policy—all of which will focus primarily on the United States and Western Europe.

Research at the core

The joint PhD Programs in Social Policy are targeted toward producing scholars whose research puts them at the forefront of studying key problems in social policy. The skills and cross-disciplinary insights you develop will allow you to identify important unanswered questions and create research strategies that improve our understanding of social problems.

Graduates of the joint PhD Programs in Social Policy leave the program well equipped to pursue careers in leading political science or sociology departments, public policy schools, law schools, think tanks, nonprofit organizations, and in the public sector.

Organizational Leadership FAQs

What are the learning requirements in order to successfully complete the course, and how are grades assigned.

Participants in Organizational Leadership are eligible for a Certificate of Completion from Harvard Business School Online.

Participants are expected to fully complete all coursework in a thoughtful and timely manner. This will mean meeting each week’s course module deadlines and fully answering questions posed therein. This helps ensure participants proceed through the course at a similar pace and can take full advantage of social learning opportunities. In addition to module and assignment completion, we expect you to offer feedback on others’ reflections and contribute to conversations on the platform. Participants who fail to complete the course requirements will not receive a certificate and will not be eligible to retake the course.

More detailed information on course requirements will be communicated at the start of the course. No grades are assigned for Organizational Leadership. Participants will either be evaluated as complete or not complete.

What is the Learning Path Tool?

The Learning Path Tool (LPT) is a 360-degree assessment developed at Harvard Business School to provide leaders with insights into key areas of competence essential for effective leadership. At the beginning of Organizational Leadership, you’ll be asked to complete a self-assessment and solicit feedback from colleagues, such as direct reports, clients, or managers, for the assessment. Upon successful completion of the LPT—which requires obtaining ratings from at least two colleagues (and ideally at least six)—you will receive a detailed report that provides insight into your leadership and how others experience you.

What materials will I have access to after completing Organizational Leadership?

You will have access to the materials in every prior module as you progress through the program. Access to course materials and the course platform ends 60 days after the final deadline in the program.

At the end of each course module, you will be able to download a PDF summary highlighting key concepts used throughout the course. At the end of the program, you will receive a PDF compilation of all of the module summary documents. We hope the module summary documents will serve as a helpful resource after you finish the course.

Bridgit Mendler Officially Graduates Harvard Law School and Her Future's Bright

Former disney channel star bridgit mendler is one step closer to becoming a lawyer following her 2024 graduation from harvard law school. what, like it's hard.

As Harvard Law School graduate Elle Woods famously said, "We did it!"

And in the case of  Bridgit Mendler , she did it and so much more: The  Good Luck Charlie  alum has officially graduated with her law degree from Harvard.

In a video  shared to social media May 23 , the 31-year-old could be seen walking across the stage to collect her diploma and shake hands with the Harvard faculty. But Bridgit wasn't up there alone, as she was joined by her 4-year-old son—who she adopted in 2022—with the duo pausing to pose for a quick photo before walking off stage.

The "Ready or Not" singer  surprised fans earlier this year  when she revealed she'd not only adopted her son, but that she'd also said goodbye to Hollywood, instead launching her own tech startup with husband  Griffin Cleverly . And proving she can do it all, Bridgit shared she simultaneously was on her way to getting both a law degree from Harvard and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

However,  she later had to press pause on the PhD .

"The PhD is something I started working towards in 2020," she explained in a March post on  X , "and I pursued it jointly with my law degree but when I moved to California last summer and decided that for family reasons we would stay on the west coast, it had to go on pause."

But Bridgit understands that, as a parent, sometimes difficult decisions need to be made in order to maintain a work/life balance.

"I enjoy pushing the boundary of the possible and saying yes to more things," she continued, "but also it is important to flex the muscle of prioritization and discernment. For myself I've found that learning when to say no or not right now can be more of a skill than saying yes."

As for her other venture, Bridgit is currently serving as the CEO of Northwood Space, while Griffin—who she married in 2019—acts as CTO. The startup aims to build ground satellite stations to help send and receive data from space, acting as a "data highway" between the two.

"Space is getting easier along so many different dimensions," she told  CNBC  in February about her company's goals, "but still the actual exercise of sending data to and from space is difficult."

Harvard grad who went off script to address Gaza protests said she quietly revised her speech last minute

Shruthi Kumar smiles

A Harvard senior who went viral for her graduation speech, in which she criticized the school for its response to pro-Palestine protests, has shared new details about the lead-up to the moment, including how she planned the addendum the night before.

In a dramatic moment at Harvard’s university wide commencement last week, student speaker Shruthi Kumar, 22, pulled a folded note card she had stowed away in her gown and addressed the university’s decision to deny 13 fellow seniors their degrees because of their involvement in a pro-Palestine encampment on campus.

“This semester, our freedom of speech and our expressions of solidarity became punishable leaving our graduations uncertain. As I stand before you today, I must take a moment to recognize my peers: the 13 undergraduates in the class of 2024 who will not graduate today,” she said.

“The students had spoken, the faculty had spoken. Harvard, do you hear us?” she continued, receiving thunderous applause and standing ovations from many members of the crowd.

The clip, originally captured in a university recording of the event, has reached millions of views after it made the rounds on social media over the past week.

Kumar told NBC News that she had written and practiced the speech over the course of a few months with the help of a committee of other students and faculty. Her speech, “The Power of Not Knowing,” was selected by the university over dozens of others.

But the evening before graduation day, Harvard announced its decision not to confer the degrees of 13 students “who are not in good standing,” overturning an earlier decision by a faculty body that recommended they should indeed be allowed to graduate.

“I knew that this was not just, it was not fair, and that I needed to say something,” said Kumar, who graduated with a double major in the history of science and economics. “I spent a lot of time talking to students that evening. And then at night, around 11:30, I prepared this note card.”

She said she shared the revisions with two faculty advisers, but the university deans who had previously approved her speech wasn’t aware she was making changes — and heard the new version for the first time as she delivered it to a crowd of tens of thousands.

“I was worried I’d be silenced or my mic would be cut,” she said. “Thankfully, none of that happened. I’m glad I was allowed the opportunity to say what I needed to say. But looking back at the video, it’s clear faculty are not very pleased.”

Harvard’s student encampment, like the many that were set up on campuses across the nation in the last few months, protested the tens of thousands of civilian deaths killed in Israel’s strikes on Gaza and called for their university to divest from financially supporting of Israel.

“It’s not just Harvard students that are setting up encampments,” she said. “Whether it’s what people think to be a very liberal university on the East Coast, or a state school from Nebraska, there are protests everywhere, from different types of people, different regions in the U.S. That diversity itself should show that there’s some truth to what we’re speaking.”

Hundreds of undergraduate students walked out of Harvard College’s graduation ceremony on last Thursday, also in protest of the 13 students who were barred from graduating.

Though she didn’t participate in the encampment, Kumar said her name appeared on a mass list of Harvard students doxxed by pro-Israel groups in the fall, which she touched upon in her speech.

She said her parents, who came from her home state of Nebraska to watch her graduate, were worried that her speech might draw similar backlash or violence. Kumar said that, so far, the response has only been positive from both the university and the massive international audience she’s now reached.

The past week has been a whirlwind, she said, but now back home, she’s excited to take a few months off traveling and exploring entrepreneurship before looking for job opportunities. She hopes to apply to grad school next year.

“I didn’t know it would blow up in this way. I didn’t know it would become such a moment,” she said. “I just knew I had to say something, and I did.”

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

The humbling of Harvard

Why should what harvard has to say about the world take up so much oxygen.

Students walked out in protest during Harvard University’s commencement ceremony in Cambridge on May 23.

What ever will we do now that Harvard University will no longer issue official statements about public matters? How will the lowly, non-Harvard affiliated souls of the world know what to think?

Just joking. Harvard’s declaration of a modified version of “institutional neutrality” is a big deal, not just because of what it represents from a policy perspective but also because of the initial sources of the pressure that triggered movement toward that decision — Republicans in Congress, bolstered by right-wing media outlets, and powerful donors with their own political agenda. Call it the humbling of Harvard. At least to the outside world, it looks like the academic leaders who represent this proud institution have decided now is not the time to tangle with external forces they previously would have ignored.

One result is that the recently formed Institutional Voice working group has decided the best official voice for Harvard is no official voice, with exceptions carved out for public matters that directly affect “the university’s core function.” If that helps Harvard achieve the mission first embraced in the mid-1960s at the University of Chicago — to “restore open and honest discourse on campus and reduce self-censorship” — that’s a welcome and noble outcome.

If it’s just a way to appease critics until the current storm over the Israel-Hamas war passes, it’s much less impressive. Meanwhile, the new policy won’t automatically end campus unrest, resolve ongoing charges of antisemitism and Islamophobia, or stop the debate over university investment practices. Harvard will still have to deal with all of that, just like any other institute of higher learning.

It’s worth revisiting what got Harvard to this point . The controversy over what it has to say about public events links back to the initial response by then-Harvard president Claudine Gay to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel, which a network of students, faculty, alumni, and donors denounced as weak compared with Harvard’s statements about other world events, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In an appearance before a House panel in December alongside the presidents of MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, Gay was grilled on Harvard’s response to antisemitism by Republican Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, a Harvard alum who had been calling for Gay’s resignation. An exchange about whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated a campus code of conduct became a flash point, with Gay, along with the two other university presidents, saying it depended on the context of the speech.

After that equivocation further enflamed matters, Gay apologized in an interview with The Harvard Crimson. But then conservative activist Christopher Rufo raised questions about plagiarism in Gay’s 1997 doctoral dissertation. That was followed up by more questions about her academic research that were published by The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative media outlet. Harvard’s governing board initially backed Gay, but she ultimately resigned on Jan. 2 . When that happened, Stefanik took joyful credit .

As documented by The New York Times, powerful alumni and donors also played a major role in Gay’s demise . And, as the Israel-Hamas war continued, leading to student protests and ugly campus confrontations, that network of money and influence continued to vie to shape policy and leadership decisions at Harvard and other elite universities. As my colleague Shirley Leung wrote in October, donors “are powerful forces exerting pressure on campus policies and affairs. But are their hundreds of millions of dollars worth the price of academic freedom?”

If this new Harvard policy of refraining as an institution from statements about public events leads to more academic freedom, more debate, and more diverse thinking, that is positive. If it is just a behind-the-scenes way to silence certain voices and duck tough issues, that is disappointing but not surprising. To some degree, deciding what directly affects “the university’s core function” already sounds like it’s going to be a matter of self-interest. For example, Noah Feldman, a Harvard law professor and a cochair of the committee that developed the newly adopted recommendations, told the Times that a proposal by Donald Trump to tax large private university endowments “would fall squarely within the function of the university.” What positions beyond protecting its wealth and status will be seen as part of Harvard’s core function? Harvard will have to show us the definition is about more than self-preservation.

If there’s another upside to the new Harvard policy, it is that it empowers other voices to be heard and make a difference on important matters. After all, why should we only think that what Harvard has to say matters? Of course, there are many smart people there. But there are smart people in other places, too. The world does not begin and end at Harvard. So why should what Harvard has to say — or not say — about the world take up so much oxygen?
