My current goal is related to my education. I want to come in first place and achieve the top marks in every subject because this will increase my chances of receiving an overseas scholarship. I am putting a lot of effort into achieving this as my objective. Any student wants the chance to pursue their studies overseas, and I have that chance. I also take my coursework seriously and educate myself on all topics pertaining to my field of study, including research, literature, and academic journals.

Additionally, studying overseas will help me get a superior education and a diploma that is recognised across the world, both of which will allow me to compete for prominent jobs. 500 Words Essay On My Goal In Life

Everybody has a life goal. The aim or aspiration of man is his inner desire. One will not take any action if his or her goals are unclear.

What Is A Goal

The goal of an individual is to achieve a particular objective or target. Goal may also refer to the finish line of a race or the object that a player is attempting to insert as part of a game. As a noun, "goal" has other meanings. A goal is something you strive to achieve after working hard and persistently towards it.

Types Of Goals

Mastery goals | A mastery goal, such as "I will score higher in this event next time," is one that someone sets to attain or master a certain skill.

Performance-approach goals | A performance-approach goal is one where the person aims to outperform their peers. This kind of objective might be to improve one's appearance by dropping 5 pounds or to receive a better performance evaluation.

Performance-avoidance goals | When someone sets a goal, they frequently want to avoid performing worse than their peers, such as setting a goal to avoid receiving negative

Importance Of A Goal

A goal is similar to a specific objective, the anticipated outcome that directs behaviour, or an end, which is a thing, whether it be a tangible thing or an abstract thing, that has inherent worth.

Everyone should have a life goal. When you have a goal, you work hard every day to attain it and live for it. And when you succeed in those efforts, you feel more confident.

Goals provide us a path to follow. We can hold ourselves accountable by having goals. We are able to clarify what we genuinely desire in life when we set goals and strive toward obtaining them. We can better organise our priorities by setting goals.

Goals can be long-term and short-term. For instance, finishing your schoolwork might be a short-term goal. Learning a musical instrument, pursuing a profession as a doctor, or other long-term goals examples.

Due to the length of time required and the fact that we pick our professional objective, long-term goals play crucial roles in life. The most significant effects of choosing a certain career occur both during and after the effort to attain it.

Setting goals encourages us to create plans of action that will help us reach the desired level of performance.

Example Of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam overcame obstacles to achieve his aim while serving as India's 11th president from 2002 to 2007. Dr Abdul Kalam was raised by Muslim parents who spoke Tamil. Being from a low-income household, Dr Abdul Kalam began delivering newspapers after school at a young age to help augment his family's income. This fact allowed him to help support his father financially. He did not succeed academically, but he was a dedicated student who enjoyed mathematics.

Even during his senior project in college, the dean expressed displeasure with the lack of progress and threatened to revoke his scholarship if the assignment wasn't completed by the next three days. He later put forth a lot of effort on his assignment and finished it on time, impressing the dean. From that point on, Dr Kalam worked as a scientist with the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) , eventually rising to the position of organisation chief. What follows is history.

How Do I Write An Essay About Achieving My Goals?

Introduction.

Writing an essay about achieving your goals can be a powerful exercise in self-reflection and motivation. Whether you are writing for a class assignment, a college application, or simply for personal development, this article will guide you through the process of creating a well-structured and compelling essay on this topic. By breaking down the steps involved and providing helpful tips, you’ll be equipped to express your aspirations, outline an action plan, and highlight the significance of achieving your goals.

Step 1: Set Clear Goals

Achieving your goals starts with clearly defining what you want to accomplish. Take some time to reflect on your aspirations and think about what truly matters to you. Your goals may include academic achievements, career aspirations, personal growth, or any other area of your life that you wish to improve. Ensure that your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART goals). By setting clear goals, you will be able to better articulate your vision in your essay.

Step 2: Plan Your Essay Structure

Before diving into the writing process, it’s essential to plan the structure of your essay. This will ensure that your ideas flow smoothly and logically, engaging the reader from start to finish. Generally, an essay consists of three main parts: an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

The Introduction: Begin your essay with a captivating introduction. Grab the reader’s attention with an anecdote, a relevant quote, or a thought-provoking question. Clearly state your goals and the significance they hold for you. Conclude the introduction with a concise thesis statement that presents the main focus of your essay.

Body Paragraphs: The body of your essay offers an opportunity to elaborate on your goals and the steps you are taking or planning to take to achieve them. Divide your body paragraphs based on the subtopics or themes you want to discuss. For each paragraph, present a specific goal, provide relevant details, and explain why it is important to you. Consider incorporating examples, personal experiences, or research to support your statements and make your essay more persuasive.

The Conclusion: Wrap up your essay with a strong conclusion that reinforces the main points you have discussed. Avoid introducing new information here. Instead, highlight the potential impact of achieving your goals and leave the reader with a final thought or call to action.

Step 3: Conduct Research

If your essay requires factual information or expert opinions, conducting research will provide you with valuable insights to enhance your writing. Utilize reputable sources such as scholarly articles, books, or credible websites to gather information that supports your aspirations. When referencing sources, make sure to cite them properly using the appropriate citation style (e.g., MLA, APA).

Step 4: Draft and Revise

Now that you have a plan and have conducted research, begin writing the initial draft of your essay. Start with the body paragraphs, as they contain the core content of your essay. Ensure each paragraph follows a logical flow and connects back to the main focus of your essay.

Once you have completed your draft, take time to review and revise. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Ensure that your ideas are presented clearly and cohesively. Consider seeking feedback from others, such as teachers, family members, or friends, to gain different perspectives and improve your essay even further.

Step 5: Add Personal Reflection

In addition to presenting your goals and action plans, be sure to include personal reflections throughout your essay. Explain why achieving these goals is meaningful to you and how they align with your values and aspirations. By sharing your personal insights and emotions, you will create a more engaging and authentic essay.

Step 6: Edit and Proofread

Before submitting your essay, it is crucial to edit and proofread your work. Review your essay for any errors, both grammatical and typographical. Ensure that your ideas are coherent and logical, and that your writing flows smoothly. Consider using online grammar checkers or seeking assistance from a professional editor if needed.

Writing an essay about achieving your goals allows you to reflect on your aspirations, establish a concrete plan, and demonstrate your determination to succeed. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can create a compelling essay that effectively communicates your goals and motivates both yourself and your readers.

7 ways to improve your motivation to study (backed by science).

by Winston Sieck updated September 18, 2021

girl seeking the motivation to study

Just about everyone who has ever been in school knows what it feels like to sit in front of the computer, staring at a blank screen. Hoping their term paper would write itself.

Or tried reading a textbook only to find that they have read the same paragraph ten times and still don’t know what they read.

Or decided they would rather clean the clutter out from under their bed than study in the first place.

Bottom line, studying can be kind of a drag. When you have a hundred other things you would rather do and an overwhelming amount of work to do, it is hard to get started and even harder to finish.

Fortunately, there are some simple, scientifically proven ways you can find your motivation and keep it.

What is Motivation to Study?

Motivation comes from a Latin word that literally means “to move.” But what causes someone to be motivated to study has been a hot topic in the world of science.

Researchers believe that your motivation to study can either come from inside you or outside of you. You can be motivated by an internal drive to learn as much possible. Or, you might be motivated to study by an external reward like a good grade, or a great job, or someone promising you a car.

Recently, researchers have discovered that your motivation to study is rooted in lots of factors, many of which we have control over. Rory Lazowski of James Madison University and Chris Hulleman of the University of Virginia analyzed more than 70 studies into what motivates students in schools. They published their paper , “Motivation Interventions in Education: A Meta-Analytic Review, in the journal Review of Educational Research .

Lazowski and Hulleman found that a number of ways to improve motivation consistently yield positive results. Here, I describe seven of the techniques that you can most readily use on your own to power through your own study barriers, and move your learning forward.

1. Set Clear Goals

You may think to yourself, “My goal is to graduate and get a good job and be rich.” While that’s a fine ambition, by itself it probably won’t help you in school day-to-day.

In order to improve your motivation to study, your goals have to be a little closer to home. In fact, setting clear academic goals has been scientifically linked to higher grade point averages than students who set vague goals, like, “I’ll just do the best I can.”

Set a goal to earn an “A” on a particular test in a particular subject. Or, decide to learn everything you can about a concept because it will help you in the real world. Set a deadline for homework that will force you to finish a task before it is due so you can review it before handing it in. Whatever the goal is, be sure it is specific, relevant, and timely.

2. Don’t Just Shoot For Performance, Go For Mastery

There is nothing more frustrating than studying hard for a test only to get a grade that is less than what you were expecting. At that point, lots of students throw their hands in the air and say, “If this is what happens when I study, why study?”

Resist that urge.

The grades you receive on a test are examples of performance goals. If you set a goal to get an “A”, and stop there, you may only study the things that you think will be on the test, but not necessarily the things that will give you mastery of the concept.

Students who consistently strive for mastery , really learning what they are studying, almost always see their grades improve as a result.

Mastery goals also help with your motivation to study. If you want to learn everything there is to know, you are less likely to put off starting that process.

3. Take Responsibility for Your Learning

It’s tempting to blame your grades on other people. The teacher doesn’t like you. They never taught what you were tested on. Your homework assignment doesn’t apply. When you blame others for your performance, you are more likely to do poorly on tests, assignments and projects.

Taking responsibility for your own learning can make a world of difference when it comes to getting yourself motivated to study. Recognizing that you are in charge of what you learn can help you start studying, but it can also keep you going when other distractions threaten to take your attention away.

Next time you are tempted to stop in the middle of an assignment and do something else, pause. Take a breath. Then, say out loud, “No one is going to learn this for me.” You might be surprised at how hearing those words affect your focus.

4. Adopt a Growth Mindset

Some people still believe that you’re either born smart (or not). And there’s not much you can do about it. However, research has shown that successful people tend to believe that intelligence is something you build up over your life. These folks have a growth mindset.

When your intelligence is challenged by hard assignments or difficult concepts, people with a growth mindset tend to think, “I don’t know this yet, but if I work hard, I will learn it.”

Researchers found that believing your brain can get stronger when you tackle hard things not only improves your mastery of what you are learning, it also improves your grades and increases your motivation to study.

The next time you are faced by a blank screen or hard textbook chapter remember, “I don’t know this yet, but if I work hard, I will learn it.”

5. Find the Relevance

If you ever want to annoy your math teacher, tell them algebra has no relevance in the real world. Alternatively, try to figure out how what you are studying relates to your life. Studies have shown that high school students who were asked to write down how their subject matter related to their everyday life saw a significant jump in their GPA.

Before you start studying, try jotting down a few ways this information will come in handy in the future. Making this connection will help you see value in what you are doing and get you started on an assignment or topic.

Sometimes, the connection between what you are learning and how it applies to your life is not easy to see. Try searching the web for applications of your topic to help you see the real-life relevance of what you are learning.

6. Imagine Your Future Self

Imagine what your life will be like in 10 years. Are you successful? Do you have a great career that you love? Are you living in the best city in the world?

Now, imagine how you are going to get there.

Some people automatically connect the school work they are doing now with getting into a good college or training program that will lead to their desired future. Other students have difficulty making that connection.

Having the ability to imagine your future self is a skill that has been shown to improve motivation to study. It has also been linked to higher grades, lower cases of truancy and fewer discipline problems in school.

Next time you are faced with a particularly daunting assignment, close your eyes and picture what you want your life to be like. Then, recognize that in order to have the life you want, you have to do the assignment in front of you.

7. Reaffirm Your Personal Values

What do you value most? What are the two or three most important qualities you can possibly develop? Do you strive to be honest in everything you do? Do you value kindness? Is success the most important value in your life?

Taking a few minutes now and again to reaffirm your values by writing in a journal or meditating about them can help you focus your efforts in other areas of your life.

If you value family over everything, your ability to take care of your family will motivate you to study and do well in school. If you value honesty, you will never feel inclined to cheat on a test, but will work hard to study.

Ultimately, finding the motivation to study is less about going on a treasure hunt and more about changing the way you think about learning. Even implementing a few of these seven tips can help you stay focused and keep going.

Thanks for sharing this post. I plan to share it with my students this week. We’re implementing some growth mindset and mindfulness practices this year. This will be a good reinforcement of some of those ideas and will provide some new insight as well. I think it will be well-received. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how open they’ve been to these ideas so far. Thanks again.

Thank you! Without following all of these steps, it’s hard to have any significant academic success, I think. It helps me not to lose motivation with step-by-step planning: I divide the global goal into several small short-term goals and achieving even minimal results makes me happy and motivates me to try harder. Of course, there are also bad periods, when I feel exhausted and overwhelmed. But a little rest allows me to get back on track.

6 tips for scholarship essay success

Writing any scholarship essay takes time, thought, and energy. The earlier you start, the better!

Your goals today may change tomorrow. Think about where you are now in your high school career – what are you studying that you love? What would you like to change? What do you aim to accomplish in college? Ask yourself these questions and write down those goals.

No one is perfect – we all have our hardships and our downfalls. But think positively when it comes to your academic goals. If you didn’t do so hot in one subject, try not to include that exact phrasing in the essay, but think about how you can turn that around into a positive.

Similar to personal statements , share your story – a moment that brought you to where you are today. Especially for local scholarships, the providers want to feel like they’re supporting real people to achieve their academic dreams. So make sure you share enough personal details about where you are and where you want to be.

Using a tool like Grammarly helps check your spelling and grammar as you’re writing. Ask a friend, family member, or expert to review your academic goals essay before you submit it with your scholarship application. This will help your writing for college appear polished and professional.

You did it! You wrote it! That’s your work, and now it’s up to the scholarship providers to review and accept your application.

Points to consider while writing your academic goals scholarship essay:

Think about your current studies in high school. If you’re a high school junior, think about what classes you’re currently taking, and what you plan to take next year as a senior. If you’re a high school senior, reflect on your last two semesters of classes. What’s your curriculum look like? You might be taking an English class, Math, a focused class, such as Sociology, maybe a World Religions course, Geography, Government and an elective such as music, art, or physical education.

High school student study books

We all know a high school teacher who made going to class enjoyable because of their personality – OR – we just really loved the subject (No one? Just us? Okay…it was Mr. Nixon’s Law class that made research and debating against classmates fun for us).

Capitalize on the enjoyable aspects of that class in your academic goals essay. Explain how your teacher made the class engaging in a way that helped you retain information while also enjoying the class. Consider what the ideal academic class would look like in college. Would you aim to take a similar course in college where the professor promotes engaged learning? Or would you prefer to sit in a lecture hall where you can listen, digest detailed information, write down notes, and ask questions as needed? Think about your learning style as you organize your academic goals essay.

Going back to the point of staying positive, think through a subject that you’re currently not too thrilled about, and get creative with how you can turn that into an academic goal.

Ex: Statistics was one of the most challenging subjects of my junior year curriculum. However, I know I’ll need to have sufficient knowledge of the subject to major in Psychology in college. My goal is to find a study buddy – a colleague, a tutor, someone skilled in the subject, to improve my understanding of the subject so I can later help patients understand research study statistics in the future.

It might be a 3.5 GPA. Or you might want to walk across the stage on graduation day with summa cum laude cords. Maybe you want to become president of the student government association on campus.

The great thing about college is that you’re furthering your education, and you’re growing as a person! You’re learning about yourself, how you work, how you interact, and there are so many opportunities to get involved on campus. Think about how these fits in with your academic goals by naming any organizations, department clubs, and honor societies that catch your eye.

How might your near-term academic goals help you in your future (e.g. career after college)–or how might they help others (e.g. your friends, family, future customers/patients)? Think long-term: what will your current academic goals help you achieve further down the line? Whom might that impact?

Ex: Taking 18 credits helped us knock out our required wellness course during the second semester of our freshman year of college. By sophomore year, we could focus on classes related to our major and enjoy time after class. We later graduated a semester early thanks to study habits and credits. We spent time at the on-campus career center, working through mock interviews. Then, we later landed a job soon after graduation, working for a company and helping them bring on new customers.

All of this happened as a result of creating academic goals to plan classes early and work through those credits.

Everyone finds inspiration from different outlets. Whether it’s your parents, a teacher, your guidance counselor, classmates, siblings, or even an athlete, briefly describe who inspired these goals. Heck, you might have inspired yourself to make these goals! If it wasn’t someone who inspired you, discuss what inspired you to set these goals in your academic goals essay.

Writing down goals for ourselves is great. It makes our goals seem more concrete once we talk or write about them. Now, it’s time to make those goals happen! Toward the end of your academic goals essay, you might want to explicitly state your plan for holding yourself accountable to these goals — this will seem impressive to a scholarship provider who wants to make sure their award money is going to someone who’s serious about their future.

How might you stay accountable? Maybe your best friend can text you every Wednesday to check in with you mid-week on your progress. Or maybe that’s too much, and you’ll just set a reminder on your phone to check in with yourself once a week. Or maybe you’re a real planner– and you’ve created clear milestones for the next couple years, and you’ll check in regularly to make sure you’re hitting them. Whatever it is, bringing your lofty academic goal down to concrete steps is likely to make your academic goals essay stronger.

Student writing academic goals essay with Going Merry

Don’t just think of your scholarship essay on academic goals as a chore that you complete and then never look at again. Once you’ve written it, let it help serve as your beacon as you decide what majors or classes to take, or what student organizations to join.

Then you can plan your semesters accordingly. For example:

  • Jot down your goals for your class schedule, what you plan to do with your time before, after, and in between classes.
  • Consider what time of day you would be most effective in taking the classes necessary to meet your academic goals. Are you a night owl or a morning person? Do you need lots of time between classes to really digest the material?
  • How many classes (or credits) do you plan to take? You can take a full load of classes, usually up to 18 credits per semester depending on the school, without going over your tuition limit, to help give you a lighter load your junior and senior years. Or, you can take the standard 12 – 16 credits per semester to avoid overloading your schedule and leaving room for socializing and other activities. This may also affect your graduation year. So if part of your academic goals (or your plan for reducing tuition ) requires you to graduate early — you’ll also want to plan this out!

1 Successful students have goals

Succeeding in college is rather like succeeding in life. It’s really much more about you than it is about college. So the most important place to start is to consider why you’re here, what matters to you, and what you expect to get out it. Even if you have already thought about these questions, it’s good to reaffirm your commitment to your plan as we begin to consider what’s really involved in being a college student. Let’s take a look at successful student have goals.

A group of people sitting on bench near trees during daytime.

Students who have long term life and career goals see college as one step towards achieving their goals. This can set a purpose and a direction for students. It can increase students’ day-to-day and semester-to-semester motivation because they see that each course is part of a greater whole that will help them in the future. This can also help with persistence, with keeping at it when things are tough. There will be challenges during your college career. There may be times you feel like giving up or you just don’t feel like going to class, reading your textbook, or writing that paper. Having that purpose, that long term goal can help you decide to move past that challenge and keep going. We call this resiliency.

Goals help you set priorities and remain motivated and committed to your college success. Setting a long term goal usually leads to setting medium and short term goals. These are practical goals related to being a student that can help you make better decisions when considering your choices of how to spend your time. Setting priorities with shorter term goals can help you see what you need to do next. Working through goals can help you feel more in control and can reduce stress.

Attitude is the largest factor determining success in college. Work to stay positive and surround yourself with positive people, and you’ll find you are motivated to carry out the activities that will help you succeed in your courses.

Goal Setting

A goal is a result we intend to reach mostly through our own actions..

Things we do may move us closer to or farther away from that result. Studying moves us closer to success in a difficult course, while sleeping through the final examination may completely prevent reaching that goal. That’s fairly obvious in an extreme case, yet still a lot of college students don’t reach their goal of graduating. The problem may be a lack of commitment to the goal, but often students have conflicting goals. One way to prevent problems is to think about all your goals and priorities and to learn ways to manage your time, your studies, and your social life to best reach your goals.

It all begins with setting goals and thinking about priorities.

Blue marker on white printer paper.

As you think about your own goals, think about more than just being a student. You’re also a person with individual needs and desires, hopes and dreams, plans and schemes. Your long-term goals likely include graduation and a career but may also involve social relationships with others, a romantic relationship, family, hobbies or other activities, where and how you live, and so on. While you are a student, you may not be actively pursuing all your goals with the same fervor, but they remain goals and are still important in your life.

Goals also vary in terms of time.

  • Short-term goals focus on today and the next few days and perhaps weeks.
  • Midterm goals involve plans for this school year and the time you plan to remain in college.
  • Long-term goals may begin with graduating college and everything you want to happen thereafter.

Often your long-term goals (e.g., the kind of career you want) guide your midterm goals (getting the right education for that career), and your short term goals (such as doing well on an exam) become steps for reaching those larger goals. Thinking about your goals in this way helps you realize how even the little things you do every day can keep you moving toward your most important long-term goals.

Write out your goals.

You should literally write them down, because the act of finding the best words to describe your goals helps you think more clearly about them.

Follow these guidelines:

  • Goals should be realistic. It’s good to dream and to challenge yourself, but your goals should relate to your personal strengths and abilities.
  • Goals should be specific. Don’t write, “I will become a great musician;” instead, write, “I will finish my music degree and be employed in a symphony orchestra.”
  • Goals should have a time frame. You won’t feel very motivated if your goal is vaguely “to finish college someday.” If you’re realistic and specific in your goals, you should also be able to project a time frame for reaching the goal.
  • You should really want to reach the goal. We’re willing to work hard to reach goals we really care about, but we’re likely to give up when we encounter obstacles if we don’t feel strongly about a goal. If you’re doing something only because your parents or someone else wants you to, then it’s not your own personal goal — and you may have some more thinking to do about your life.

Everything people do and how they do it starts with attitude.

Another student oversleeps after partying too late last night, decides to skip his first class, somehow gets through later classes fueled by fast food and energy drinks while dreading tomorrow’s exam, and immediately accepts a friend’s suggestion to go out tonight instead of studying.

Both students could have identical situations, classes, finances, and academic preparation. There could be just one significant difference— but it’s the one that matters.

Here are some characteristics associated with a positive attitude:

  • Enthusiasm for and enjoyment of daily activities
  • Acceptance of responsibility for one’s actions and feeling good about success
  • Generally upbeat mood and positive emotions, cheerfulness with others, and satisfaction with oneself
  • Motivation to get the job done
  • Flexibility to make changes when needed
  • Ability to make productive, effective use of time

And here are some characteristics associated with a negative attitude:

  • Frequent complaining
  • Blaming others for anything that goes wrong
  • Often experiencing negative emotions: anger, frustration, resentment
  • Lack of motivation for work or studies
  • Hesitant to change or seek improvement
  • Unproductive use of time, procrastination

Stay Focused and Motivated

Okay, you’ve got a positive attitude. But you’ve got a lot of reading for classes to do tonight, a test tomorrow, and a paper due the next day. Maybe you’re a little bored with one of your reading assignments. Maybe you’d rather play a computer game. Uh oh—now what?

Attitude can change at almost any moment. One minute you’re enthusiastically starting a class project, and then maybe a friend drops by and suddenly all you want to do is close the books and relax a while, hang out with friends.

One of the characteristics of successful people is accepting that life is full of interruptions and change— and planning for it. Staying focused does not mean you become a boring person who does nothing but go to class and study all the time. You just need to make a plan.

Planning ahead is the single best way to stay focused and motivated to reach your goals. Don’t wait until the night before an exam. If you know you have a major exam in five days, start by reviewing the material and deciding how many hours of study you need. Then schedule those hours spread out over the next few days — at times when you are most alert and least likely to be distracted. Allow time for other activities, too, to reward yourself for successful studying. Then when the exam comes, you’re relaxed, you know the material, you’re in a good mood and confident, and you do well. Planning is mostly a matter of managing your time well, there is more about this topic in the Successful Students Get it Together chapter.

Here are some other tips for staying focused and motivated:

Select focus on woman clapping.

  • Remember your successes, even small successes. As you begin a project or approach studying for a test, think about your past success on a different project or test. Remember how good it feels to succeed. Know you can succeed again.
  • Get the important things done first. Stay focused, motivated and concentrate on the things that matter most. You’re about to sit down to read a chapter in a book you’re not much enjoying, and you suddenly notice some clothing piled up on a chair. “I really should clean up this place,” you think. “And I’d better get my laundry done before I run out of things to wear.” Don’t try to fool yourself into feeling you’re accomplishing something by doing laundry rather than studying. Stay focused!
  • If you just can’t focus in on what you should be doing because the task seems too big and daunting, break the task into smaller, manageable pieces. Don’t start out thinking, “I need to study the next four hours,” but think, “I’ll spend the next thirty minutes going through my class notes from the last three weeks and figure out what topics I need to spend more time on.” It’s a lot easier to stay focused when you’re sitting down for thirty minutes at a time.
  • Imitate successful people. Does a friend always seem better able to stick with studying or work until they get it done? What are they doing that you’re not? We all learn from observing others, and we can speed up that process by deliberately using the same strategies we see working with others. Visualize yourself studying in the same way and getting that same high grade on the test or paper.
  • Separate yourself from unsuccessful people. This is the flip side of imitating successful people. If a roommate or a friend is always putting off things until the last minute or is distracted with other interests and activities, tell yourself how different you are. When you hear other students complaining about how hard a class is or bragging about not studying or attending class, visualize yourself as not being like them at all.
  • Reward yourself when you complete a significant task – but only when you are done. Some people seem able to stay focused only when there’s a reward waiting.

Thinking about your goals gets you started, but it’s also important to think about priorities. We often use the word “priorities” to refer to how important something is to us. We might think, this is a really important goal, and that is less important.

Try this experiment: go back to the goals you wrote and see if you can rank each goal as a

  • Top priority
  • Middle priority
  • Lowest priority

It sounds easy, but do you actually feel comfortable doing that? Maybe you gave a priority 1 to passing your courses and a priority 3 to playing your guitar. So what does that mean—that you never play guitar again, or at least not while in college? Whenever you have an hour free between class and work, you have to study because that’s the higher priority? What about all your other goals — do you have to ignore everything that’s not a priority 1? And what happens when you have to choose among different goals that are both number 1 priorities?

Person holding white and silver-colored pocket watch.

In reality, priorities don’t work quite that way. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to try to rank goals as always more or less important. The question of priority is really a question of what is more important at a specific time. It is important to do well in your classes, but it’s also important to have a social life and enjoy your time off from studying. You shouldn’t have to choose between the two — except at any given time.

Priorities always involve time: what is most important to do right now. As we’ll see later, time management is mostly a way to juggle priorities so you can meet all your goals.

When you manage your time well, you don’t have to ignore some goals completely in order to meet other goals. In other words, you don’t have to give up your life when you register for college—but you may need to work on managing your life more effectively. But time management works only when you’re committed to your goals. Attitude and motivation are very important. If you haven’t yet developed an attitude for success, all the time management skills in the world won’t keep you focused and motivated to succeed.

Key Takeaways

  • Having long-term goals (college diploma) lead to setting midterm goals (by semester) which can be broken down into short-term goals (completing an assignment).
  • Writing out your goals helps you think more clearly about what you want to achieve.
  • Having enthusiasm for daily life, accepting responsibility, being motivated and flexible, and making effective use of time are signs of a positive attitude.
  • Planning ahead is the single best way to stay focused and motivated to reach your goals.
  • When deciding what to do with your time, considering your priorities is a good way to decide what to do next.
  • Goals help you set priorities and remain committed to your college success.

How do people receive failures? Write about people’s attitudes and actions when they fail at their goals. Can people develop depression, and how can they recover from the fall? Try to answer these and share your experience of failing at your goals.

Ask yourself: How did you move forward after that? Then, share your opinions on whether a failure signifies that it would be best for someone to find a new goal altogether or try again with stronger determination and a better-calculated strategy.

Which is better: aiming for a lofty goal that opens risks of failure, which many fear, or light goals that might do little in stretching out your potential? Answer this by listing the pros and cons of each. Then help readers strike the optimum balance between a loft or light goal. Cite examples of lofty and light goals to help your readers better differentiate the two.

For this essay, take a deep dive into the poverty reduction efforts of your government. First, give an overview of an ongoing flagship poverty reduction program and uncover its outcomes since its implementation. How to Set (And Actually Achieve) Your Study Goals

If you want to improve your study skills and grade it’s important to set study goals. When you know where you want to go you have more chance of actually getting there.

For example, let’s say you set a goal to achieve an average of 60% in all your modules to graduate with the degree you want. If you get to the end of your second year and your average is 55% then you’ll know you need to course-correct and do something different to increase your grades.

Also, setting study goals boosts your motivation and reduces procrastination because having that clear objective helps focus your mind and encourage you to get back on track if you slip up.

Start Your Essay

Types of study goals

There are two types of study goals I want you to set.

GRADE-BASED STUDY GOALS > these are centred around the achievement of higher exam or essay grades.

Examples include: - achieve a 2:1 degree/or a 4.0 GPA - achieve 80% in an essay by the end of the year - achieve an A in my end-of-module exam

HABIT-BASED STUDY GOALS >   these are centred around breaking an old, bad study habit or forming a new, good study habit.

Examples include: - stop looking at my phone while I study - start each essay 2 weeks before it’s due - study for 30 minutes every evening.

Spend some time reflecting on your study experience in the past year or few months and think of ways you can improve this to achieve higher grades and generally be a happier student.

Think of some study goals (one grade-based and one habit-based) that you can set to focus your energy in the coming months.

Strategies for sticking to and achieving your study goals

1. make ‘em specific.

It’s no use setting a goal that you’ll study more, or that you’ll achieve the highest grades you can. Study goals must be specific otherwise you won’t know when you’ve achieved them!

Every week you need to be able to look at your goal and immediately be able to see whether you’ve made progress or achieved it. Add specific details, numbers, times and dates to your goals.

2. Get motivated

You won’t put the time and energy into achieving study goals you’re not motivated by so take some paper and answer the following questions:

How is your studying and life being held back by not achieving this goal?

How will your studying and life be improved if you achieve this goal?

Identify your reasons and remind yourself of them often to keep you motivated.

3. Identify your actions and strategies

Now you need to work out HOW you’re going to achieve your study goals. Take each of your goals and think of the possible strategies you could use.

To improve your essay grades you could: start your essays 2 weeks before the deadline; learn how to reference accurately; plan your essays before you start; use your tutor feedback to strengthen your weaker areas.

Also, think about how you can clear resistance to help you achieve your goals. If you want to reduce your screen time then make a rule that your phone won’t be in the same room as you when you’re studying.

4. Plan for obstacles

It’s a given that you’ll face challenges as you work towards your study goals so, rather than letting them disrupt your progress, plan for them.

Look at your study goals and identify any possible obstacles. Maybe you want to study for 30 minutes a day but you’re always tired when you get home from work. You could try and move your study session to before work or during your lunch break to combat this or find ways of renewing your energy in the evening.

If you have a study goal to submit every essay at least 1 day early, check your calendar to see if anything is going to get in the way of that. If you’ve got holidays or work trips coming up then see if you can get ahead sooner so you can still achieve your goal, even with the break.

5. Don’t be afraid to pivot

There’s a saying I try and remember, be stubborn about your goals and flexible about your methods. If you’re not making the progress you want, reflect on whether your methods are working. The outcome of your goal is the important part, not the way you achieve it.

Let’s think about a non-study example. If I want to lose weight then I may start swimming twice a week. If after a month or so I’ve not noticed any progress then I might start doubting my ability to achieve the goal at all and I’ll probably give up. Instead, I should pivot and change my methods. I could add in some lunchtime walks or start counting my calories to help boost my progress.

Think about how you can tweak your methods to bring your closer to your study goals

6. Choose a reward

To boost your motivation even more, pick a treat for once you’ve achieved your goal. The treat should be in relation to the size and difficulty of the goal because you’re unlikely to be motivated to work your butt off for a year to improve your essay grades if the reward is just a bar of chocolate.

When I got my first Distinction in an essay, I treated myself with wine and a takeaway. For my first Distinction in a module I went out with friends for cocktails. When I realised I’d achieved First Class Honours in my business degree after four longggggggg years of studying hard I booked a city break to Budapest with my boyfriend.

Follow this process for setting and achieving your study goals and your grades will thank you for it :)

Think About Your Goals

It can be challenging to think about what your goals are after college. This is especially true if you haven’t decided on a major and have no idea what you want to study.

Writing Tips – Getting Started

When starting to write your essay , make sure you open with a catchy introduction. This can be a question, an anecdote or a personal story. You want to grab your reader’s interest right away. Start with something unique, rather than using a generic sentence that any other student can use.

Explain the Inspiration Behind Your Goals

You’ll then want to explain the inspiration behind your goals. What led you to want to pursue these goals? What experiences have you had in life which have influenced you and your dreams?

Discuss Your Goals

After discussing your past experiences, talk about your education and career goals . Do you have a major? How will it help you achieve your goals?

Do you have long-term goals you can talk about? The scholarship provider doesn’t expect you to have long-term goals set in stone so don’t worry if you don’t. Instead, you can write about how you wish to impact others.

Make a Creative Conclusion

In your conclusion paragraph, you should summarize the major points in your essay.  Then finish with a closing thought. You should try to make it creative and unique. You want to leave a lasting impression on the reader.

After you finish writing your essay, make sure you proofread it several times. The last thing you’d want to do is turn in an essay with grammar mistakes.

Scholarship Goals Essay Example

It was November, 2016, a few days before Thanksgiving. My class took a field trip to a soup kitchen to serve lunch. I poured piping hot soup into bowls while people started to fill the room. It was a great way to warm up on the frigid November day. Their eyes seemed empty and sad. “Happy Thanksgiving” we said to one another, as our eyes locked.

A few days later, as I sat surrounded by family, turkey, gravy and pumpkin pie, I couldn’t help but feel like something wasn’t right. Why was I so fortunate to have access to all this food? I thought of the people from the soup kitchen and wondered where they were. I knew right then and there that my purpose in life was to help people.

I returned to the soup kitchen as a volunteer a week later, and a week after that.

I envisioned the realm of possibilities for these people. “I would connect him with a rehab program, her with daycare for her baby so she could find work,” I thought to myself while volunteering. I have dreams of one day being able to help people make changes in their lives.

For this reason, I will be starting my undergraduate degree in social work at Boston University in the fall. I am certain that my studies will instill within me the skills and knowledge I need to pursue a career as a social worker. I hope to be able to help those who are less privileged find hope in their lives.

This scholarship will help me achieve my educational and career goals. I have been working hard to save up for college, but with the exorbitant costs of tuition, my part-time jobs haven’t been enough. I am planning to work during my undergraduate degree, but I do wish to focus a lot of my time on my studies. This scholarship will help by lowering the costs of college and the amount of hours I’ll need to work throughout my studies. This way, I’ll be able to continue with my academic achievements. It will also give me time to find an internship. I am hoping to find an internship at a homeless shelter in the Boston area.

It has been two and a half years since I first walked into that soup kitchen. That day without a doubt has changed the course of my life. My experiences there, talking with people and hearing their stories, have instilled within me a passion to help people make positive changes in their lives. This scholarship will allow me to pursue the education I need to achieve my goals.

How To Write A Powerful Essay On Achieving Goals (+ Example)

Goal setting is a useful strategy to get the most out of life and set yourself up for success. However, there are many things to remember regarding proper goal setting and achievement. When writing a blm argumentative essay , it’s important to provide context on the history of the Black Lives Matter movement and the issues it seeks to address. This can help the reader understand the significance of the essay’s thesis and arguments. Let’s get to grips with the process of goal setting and come up with a powerful essay on achieving goals.

Structuring Your Essay on Achieving Goals:

How to write an introduction, how to write the main body of your essay.

There should be a minimum of three paragraphs in your essay. Each one is a ‘mini-essay with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Each should include:

How to Write a Conclusion

Example of an essay about achieving your goals.

So, let’s put all this information together and check an example essay on achieving goals: Effective Methods to Increase the Likelihood of Goal Achievement Achieving goals can be extremely rewarding and result in a more satisfying and successful life. Many people set goals yet cannot achieve them. However, there are ways to avoid or reduce the likelihood of missing the mark. By ensuring that goals are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound), using visualization techniques, and rewarding goal attainment, the chances of success increase. First, ensure your goals are SMART. This means that goals should be specific and measurable in terms of outcomes, e.g., test scores . Goals should be achievable and realistic to the person’s capabilities and resources available. Also, a goal should apply to the person’s work, education, hobbies, or interests and include a deadline. If there is no specificity of outcome, there’s no real way to see how someone has improved—or how they might be falling short. And if goals are not SMART, they are more difficult to achieve. Second, by imagining and visualizing the feelings and outcomes of achievement of the goal , the likelihood of high achievement increases. The imagination can be a powerful tool. Imagining the feelings of accomplishment helps to increase self-efficacy and motivation. A Canadian study found that imagery skills moderate the effect of mental practice on self-efficacy. The effects of visualization techniques are valuable in goal achievement. Third, once the goal has been accomplished, a reward is required. Getting a reward for hard work will increasingly motivate an individual to set and achieve the next goal. The offer of a reward gives employees and students an extra boost of motivation. Rewards help the cycle of goal setting and goal achieving to continue. In summary, by ensuring the goals set are SMART, visualizing and rewarding success, goal achievement becomes more likely. Achieving goals is a cyclic process that’s possible to master if the right method is in place.

The Basics of Setting and Achieving Goals

Goals should be specific and free of generalizations, or they are unlikely to get done. Instead of stating that your goal is to improve your English skills, make it more specific by stating that your goal is to learn and use one new word every weekday to boost your English vocabulary.

A goal should be measurable because you need to keep your finger on the pulse and know where you’re at. For instance, a test or assessment score can provide evidence that you have reached your goal.

A goal needs to be possible to achieved. If it’s beyond your capabilities or requires resources you cannot access, then you will set yourself up for failure.

You must set a completion date for your goal. If you do not set a deadline, you may lack the motivation to reach it. Once you have your SMART goal, record it clearly on paper or a mobile device and then visualize the outcome of achieving that goal. Imagine how happy you will feel when you achieve it. This vivid mental imagery will provide you with the extra motivation to go for it. Finally, when you reach your goal, it’s time to celebrate! Reward yourself with a trip, an item you desire, relaxation time with friends, or whatever else that will make you feel happy.

The Goal Of Finishing School

The goal of finishing school has always been ingrained into me at a young age. My mother has always hammered into my mind that I should always do my best, and get an education because it will lead to better opportunities in life. The constant nagging eventually formed into a fear within me that I don’t want to be a worthless bum, and actually make something of myself. At first glanced, everything seem too easy that I eventually did enough just to get by. I did the bare minimum at school just to get that passing grade. As I entered high school, there was a fear that this might be somewhat challenging. That fear quickly went away. Attending a high school within a lower economical area of the city, I was left to my free will. Of course the words of my mother were always in the back of my mind, but how was I to comprehend it? I was passing my classes so I thought I was doing a pretty good job. After four years of high school, and with no guidance what-so-ever, I was left in a fog. I eventually started attending classes at a community college because that 's what some friends told me to do. It was the best option because it was cheaper than going to a state college. What did I know? I was working, and going to school at the same time so I 'm doing pretty good for myself. Now many years down the line, and I still where I am as a kid. Unlike days of the past, I do have a sense of direction, but still not sure which direction to take. I am currently working my way to getting my college degree, but at the same time wondering if I should continue on this path. The problem that has been bouncing back and forward in my head is whether I should continue school or just give up and focus on working. I have been juggling with the problem of pic... ... middle of paper ... ...ut myself. As I look back at my problems, it really brought to light a flaw that I have that I never thought of. From just deciding whether I should continue going to school or just working, I have come to the conclusion that I’m just a screw up. I can 't believe that it took me this long to realize it, and hopefully i do something about it before it 's too late. There will always be problems that come up, but how one handles them are what makes the person. I have not done my best to handle the problems that come up. I think I do have solutions that could be viable options, but actually implementing the plans for the solution is definitely my weak point. It is something that I should not dwell on because it will lead me back to square one and what good will that do for me? Absolutely nothing! I know where I stand now, and will attack my problems with the right plans.

Educational Goals and Philosophy

It was the last day of school. My daughter's 3rd grade class had just chosen to have me read to them instead of playing a game. As I explained that we wouldn't be able to finish the rest of the chapter book I had begun several weeks before, I suggested "You can check it out at the library and finish it over the summer". One little girl looked up at me in disappointment and said, "but it wouldn't be the same as hearing you read"! My heart melted and the final reason was added to my ongoing mental list of why I should begin to pursue a teaching degree at the age of 35.

Personal Narrative: My Life After College

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do with my life after high school. I sat at home, on the computer, searching for careers and colleges majors online, night after night. I’d ask my parents, “What should I do with my life?” They would repeatedly give me the same answer, “Whatever your little heart desires.” That response just made me even more confused and frustrated because it reminded me of how many different options I had to choose from. I knew I wanted to continue my education by attending college, but there are so many aspects to think about when considering a college, such as, the type, cost, size, and distance of the college. I would stay awake in bed at night stressing about it. I knew I wanted to attend a college close

Persuasive Essay About Higher Education

Throughout the years, I hardly believed in my capabilities in school and in achieving my ambitions. You see I am not one of those cool kids who blatantly don’t want to do anything, in fact, I was worse. When opportunities decides to knock on my doorstep, I simply decline hoping that luck doesn’t go my way. It is because I was afraid to change my status which I was already comfortable with my life. Now that I am more educated I’m seeing a different point of view, a different view of living, which is achieving great things in life and surpassing anything that may come my way. In my path towards a higher education I have passed obstacles such as injury, problems with self-esteem, and transportation.

Teacher Certification Admission Essay

Throughout high school and during my undergraduate studies, education was never a top priority for me. Only during the past two years, in the "real world", have I realized the importance of education. I look back at those years and wish I had done more and realized all the potential I had in my hands and not wasted so much time. During my undergraduate career my social activities consumed my life. My friends were not motivated to do well in school so I followed their lead. My grades were low, and I did not even care. After I graduated in 1997 with a Psychology B.A. and lost touch with my old friends and old ways, I have realized that I should have spent more time doing some soul searching and thinking what it was that I wanted to do with my life. I liked Psychology but what I really wanted to do was work with children more closely. I had spent my junior and senior years involved in internships at Head Start and at a High School in a Program for teenaged mothers. I loved my work there. At Head Start I was a Teacher Aid for the pre-school, teaching the children to read, numbers etc. And at the High School I counseled the teenaged mothers, took care of their kids while they went to school and after the school day I tutored them with their homework. After being out of school for a while, I started to miss that. The feeling that I was teaching something those kids, the feeling that I was making a difference. I was determined to find a job in education, with my background in Psychology, how hard could it be? I found work at a residential school for runaways and abused teenaged females. It was great! I was ready to go, I was going to change the world and change those girls lives. What I didn't realize is that will alone does not make me a teacher and that I needed training, a lot of training. I made a lot of mistakes in that job. I got discouraged and decided to forget about working with children, forget teaching and do something else that paid more. So, I got a job as a Secretary, I did that for about two years. Teaching, working with children was always on my mind.

Most individuals can recall when they were very young saying, “When I grow up, I want to be a . . . ” For some people, over the course of growing up their ambitions changed several times. But for many, they ended up in a career which was a life long desire, goal, or ambition. Today, students must begin to think about their future on a more serious note than that of childhood during the latter part of their middle school years. This is during their eighth grade year usually, which is a year or two younger now than just a few years past. But, the reason for this is still the same. This will enable students to gear their education in a route which will hopefully benefit them after high school graduation or in their future. For some, these choices and decisions will never change. But for others, for various reasons, they may decide on a career change somewhere down the road or during the course of their life. As for myself, I definitely fall into the latter of the two mentioned. After working for years in the field of business (my first degree), I felt a desire and need for a career change. I wanted a more rewarding career. Personally I feel doctors and teachers have the most rewarding careers of any profession. Therefore, teaching became my goal and ambition for my career. Unlike most individuals, I was able to obtain first hand insight into my choice before returning to college to further my education in this area by substitute teaching on a permit for three years (based on my Bachelor of Science degree and six hours of graduate studies). During these three years, I obtained two long term positions, one for three semesters, and another for one semester. I spent the duration of my time...

As a child, playing “school” occupied most of my time. My younger sister and I taught a bedroom full of stuffed animals and filled in imaginary names in our old school books. From the bad bears and loud bunnies to the good puppies and smart kittens, each stuffed animal possessed his or her own personality.

Educational Goals and Philosophies

For the past seven years, I have had the same dream - to someday be a high school math teacher. I am finally on my way to turning that dream into a reality. Along the way, I am learning a lot of things and forming a number of opinions. One of the main areas in which I am forming new beliefs is in relation to what methods I will use in teaching my class and what aspects of what philosophies I will employ. First of all, however, I must reach the point where I have a class to teach.

Education Goals

Education has always been a primary concern for my parents, who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. Following their guide, I have always valued and tried to get the most of any educational opportunity I have had. Having grown up in a business family, I have always been interested in focusing my career in the business field. My Mother and Father own their own company, and they are constantly talking about business, which has inspired me to follow their path. When my parents retire, they want me to carry on their legacy. For this reason, I have decided to pursue my studies in the field of Business and Leadership at Marylhurst University. I want to pursue a well-rounded education at this established university where I also can have life experiences in the outside world, which will ultimately help me to become a successful leader in our family business.

My Goals In College

College terrifies the best of us with pricing of the college, atmosphere of it, and the total fear of not succeeding. In my mind, I have this dream that in college I will be the best I can be, achieve every goal I set, and go above and beyond of what I set myself to. I have always had that ambition when it came to my education. I knew I had support from family, friends, and teachers. There was just one big difference, at the end of the day I was in charge of my future. The only way I see myself achieving all this is to set my mind and get the degree I want, be confident in who I am, and grow from everything I learn.

Fixed Mindset Research Paper

I come from a family of immigrants, my cousins and I are the first generation born here, and so for our family going to school was a most. I always wanted to make my mom and family proud, but I started to feel pressured of attending school and knowing what I wanted to major straight out of high school. I was going to school but I didn't have interest in learning so I started to not turn in my homework, to skip class, and surely by the middle of spring 2015 I completely dropped out of college and there my mentality changed to a fixed mindset. I remember thinking about how scared I was to go to school, I was scared of failing everything. Dropping out of college was such a disappointment for my entire family, they put me down so much saying that I wasn't going to make it far in life, and that not going to college was such a disappointment. I was happy with my decision of not going to school; I knew I needed time to think of what I wanted to do with my life. I heard about the adult school having the medical assistant program, and I looked into it and when I least expected it I was

Going To College Essay

Society tells us that after high school we must go to college and get a degree if we want to obtain success. For me going to college was the goal ever since I was a small child. Everyone in my family has gotten some form of post-secondary education. With a family like that ever Since the early ages of childhood as far I can remember my parents and family member were just always big on telling me I have to go to college to keep to better myself. After I graduated from high school the question in my house was not if I was going to go to college but instead where am I going to go to college. There was no question about if I was going to go to college or not. My parents made it clear that when august came around that year after I graduated from

Reflecting on My College Experience

Many years ago I remember my parents telling me that in order for me to become successful a college education was a must. They did not want me to go down that same road because they really regret not getting their degrees.

My Academic Journey

My journey as a student has always been focused on the path to college and success. Before I even set foot in kindergarten my mother, a college dropout, always told me that “honor roll wasn’t an option” and that I would be attending college in the future and achieving a degree. Most of the time I made these requirements. Most of the time I was awarded honor roll or had a newly edited list of colleges to attend, but sometimes life got in the way of my dreams of achieving success.

My Goals Of Education

My mom is one of the motivations for me to continue and finish my education. Despite everything my mom sacrificed for me I was stubborn and lazy and barely attempted to pass my classes which in the end added more stress to my mom’s list. She’s always motivated me to do better to show other people who looked down on me that I can do better. Many other things motivate me like the need to succeed because of the people who didn’t believe I could do anything because I slacked off when I was younger. People would always say that my mom raised us wrong and after we stopped going to private school and began going to public school. They looked down on my mom and my sisters as well as me. They would always talk bad about us behind our backs despite being related to us. Fake smiles when we were around from when I was young despite never doing anything bad to them. They’ve helped me want to show them that I will do better than them to show them how their doubt has pushed me. These things and people are very important in my life because they give me the will to continue and be better than I am now and be better in the future too.

Itt Tech Goals

A one goal that I have set for myself is to keep moving forward into my careers. By moving more into a career will help me achieve better financial issues, less depression, better opportunities, better choices, and a better attitude toward life. Another goal

My Plans And Aspirations For Completing A Graduate Education

In this personal statement I will address my plans and aspirations for completing a graduate education. I believe that an adequate college education is a necessity in today’s society. There are numerous resources and opportunities available to those who choose to seek a college education. I am committed to continuing my education to achieve my career goal of becoming a family nurse practitioner. Several members of my family are in the healthcare field, as both doctors and nurses. I have had the privilege of growing up observing and learning about the field from a private practice perspective. From this, I developed my interest in the healthcare field and decided that I wanted to become a part of the healthcare field. I want to be able to make a difference in the world and in people’s lives. I have often heard about there being a nursing shortage and the need for more practicing nurses and advance practicing nurses. After researching and evaluating the different roles and job opportunities in healthcare, I determined that nursing is the specific area that is the best fit for me. By pursing my career goal to become a family nurse practitioner, I could make a difference in the world and people’s lives as well as help fill the need for nurses.

Becoming A Security Technician

Everyone should have types of goals in life some bigger some smaller but a set of goals. I feel that is will better help you achieve things you want in life. It will also make it easier to organize your actions. My goal is to become a Security Technician so I will be able to provide for a future family and buy a home.

My Academic and Career Goals

My academic goal is to graduate Argosy University with a bachelors degree in Forensic Psychology in three years time. Forensic Psychology is the study of the criminal mind, in a nutshell. The main motivation to achieve this goal would be intrinsic. I love asking questions and knowing the answers as to why people do what they do, and in a criminals case, what led them to committing the crime. This goal, however, may have some extrinsic motivation as well. Being knowledgeable about certain behaviors that criminals poses may help solve or even prevent a crime. In addition, having a degree will help open different paths in life, ones that may present me with greater job opportunities. My attitude toward the learning process will help my achievement of each goal because I am eager, determined and motivated. My greatest desire is to succeed in life, and obtaining an education is one thing I know will help me. I perhaps will need to make some adjustments along my journey. I do not know yet if I will find another educational path that intrigues me the most. For now, I do not feel that any adjustments need to be made.

My Goals Upon Entering Graduate School

The overarching goal I hope to achieve from pursuing a degree in Industrial/Organizational psychology is to gain experience from conducting research and develop an in depth understanding of the field of I/O psychology. Completing a Master 's of Applied Science in Industrial/Organizational psychology at the University of Waterloo will allow me to reach this goal as I know that research is an important aspect of the program. Additionally, the Master’s of Applied Science will prepare me to either pursue a PhD or enter the workforce. Therefore, my goals upon entering graduate school is to gain experience in research, teaching, and consulting to better prepare me for whatever may come my way after completing a Master’s of Applied Science. My previous experience in research has demonstrated that I have the ambition to achieve all of these goals, and I know that a Master 's of Applied Science in I/O psychology at the University of Waterloo will guide and challenge me to achieve these goals. Throughout my Master 's degree my objective is to work with people and conduct impactful research. I enjoy collaborating and learning from others which will allow for personal development and well-rounded learning. I also aspire to work with people who share the same passion as I do in I/O psychology. Finally, I am determined to pursue meaningful research because it is of utmost importance to me that the research I conduct makes an impact in the research field and in the workplace. I am

My Personal Goals Essay

As a child and even as a teenager one tends to make dreams and set goals for life. On occasion these goals are far stretched and sometimes even fairy-tale like, we tend to see life through a rose-colored glass, not taking into account the many sidetracks life throws our way. At that stage in life our goals tend to be less focused and somewhat unreachable. However, the process of growing up, or maturing, tends organized and center our goals, we learn to make compromises and set goals for our goals. There are different types of goals, short term and long term. I have learned to separate the many goals I have into three main categories: family, professional and personal.

My Experiences in a Nursing Career Essay

I have many goals in life such as to have a good strong career and family. What is important to me is graduating Central high school and go on to UND. While at UND I plan to get my nursing degree and specialize in pediatrics and truama. I have

Personal Goals as a Student at the University Essay

Everyone should have personal goals that evolve around anything that needs to be accomplished. I set goals on a daily basis. One goal that I seem to have not truly focused on has been my college education. Considering all things, I decided I needed to focus on my college education. The first thing I needed to accomplish was to enroll in an institution for higher learning. Now that my enrollment is complete, I am an official student at the University enrolled in the undergraduate program for business management. As a student at the university, I now have to set personal goals so that I will be successful in my endeavors. My personal goals are to gain personal growth and development and graduate from my undergraduate program in business

My Personal Goal In Life

Education is an incredibly influential factor in my future. I will be working throughout the school year and commuting an hour and a half to the University of Southern Indiana in order to afford my education’s progression. I have received a couple of smaller scholarships that have allowed me to cobble together funds to cover my first year, and I will continue to save throughout the year in order to make my sophomore year a reachable financial ability. I think the pursuit of knowledge is one of the most important parts of a successful person’s life, and a human right in fact. Currently I am undecided about which course I will choose to pursue. I wish to study in one of two diverse fields, both of which I am passionate about. I know that passion to learn as much as I can and to make the most of myself will ultimately lead me to the right course.

SMART Goals examples for students

The SMART Goals framework, also written as S.M.A.R.T Goals or SMART Objectives, is a template for setting specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based goals.

While originally used in leadership and corporate management, the framework is now extensively used in education to help students to set personal and academic goals for themselves.

The following examples of SMART goals for students show how students can set achievable goals by following the five elements of the framework.

SMART Goals Example

For the SMART framework, a student should set one goal that meets five clear criteria. The goal should be:

  • Specific – Be clear about exactly what the goal is and what will be done to achieve it. Consider giving details about what, when, where, why, and how.
  • Measurable – Make sure you have a way to assess whether you have achieved your goal.
  • Attainable – State how you believe reaching the goal is within your power.
  • Relevant – State how the goal will help you to meet your overall goals as a student.
  • Time-Based – You need to set a time by which you will complete your goal to keep yourself accountable.

SMART Goals Template for Students

The student should write down their goal in a quote above the table then enter an explanation of how their goal is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based.

Goal: Write your goal above the table. Carefully think about your goal and fill out the sentence with details that will ensure that it is S.M.A.R.T.

Describe your goal in detail so that it is clear and tangible. Consider details like what, when, where, how, and why.
State how you will assess whether you have met your goal. Consider a tangible measurement such as a grade in an exam.
Justify why you think it’s possible for you to achieve your goal given your current skill level and the resources available to you.
Ensure your goal is relevant to your current class, lesson, or degree. A relevant goal for a student should be related to your education.
State when you want to meet your goal. Ensure this is a realistic timeframe.

My focus is on research skills for my education research course.
I will measure my success by reading feedback from my teacher who I have asked to provide a subjective comment about the research conducted in preparation for my end-of-semester paper.
There is the library that I haven’t used much but I think with that resource I will be able to research much more skillfully.

The book needs to be completed so we can analyze it in class.
The task will be completed 5 weeks from now.

9. Obtain the Confidence to Give a Public Speech

“I will obtain the confidence to give a public speech by practicing speaking from note cards in front of a mirror and friends for the next 3 weeks.”

I will focus on developing speaking confidence for an upcoming speech in class.
The measurement for success is that I will give the speech clearly and without stumbling in front of my class in 3 weeks.
I believe anyone can do this as it’s just a psychological challenge not a cognitive one.
The confidence to speak in class is necessary because I need to give this speech to pass my course.
The speech that I need to give will be given in 3 weeks from now.

10. Re-Submit my Essay for a Higher Grade

“I will use the feedback provided on my essay to re-submit for a higher grade within the 2-week timeframe I have been given by my teacher.”

“I will use a study calendar that states when and what I should study. I will do this for 5 days a week for 5 weeks.”

All study sessions will be relevant to upcoming exams.
I will sustain this push of studying harder for 5 weeks in a row.

12. Borrow One Book per Month from the Library

“I will borrow one book per month from the library for six months and read it fully in order to deepen my knowledge of sociology for my sociology class.”

The specific goal is to borrow books monthly from the library, but it could be more specific if I could list the names of the books I want to borrow and read.
The books must be fully read by the end of each month.
I believe I have sufficient free time to read one book per month as I read very quickly.
The books will help me have better foundational knowledge of sociology for my sociology course.
The task will be completed in 6 months after which I will have hopefully developed a good reading habit.

13. Complete my Assignments 2 Weeks Before Due Date

“I will complete all assignments 2 weeks before the due dates so I have 2 weeks of free time to edit the work without stress.”

“I will keep a daily study journal Monday to Friday for 15 weeks that will record what I studied, notes on key things I need to revise, and how long I studied. This will help me reflect on my improvement over time.”

“I will minimize the amount of stress I’m experiencing by exercising an hour a day, only studying for a maximum of one hour per day, and meditating for 15 minutes after each study session. I will do this for 5 weeks.”

While minimizing stress is hard to measure, the specificity comes in the fact I can measure how long I exercise, meditate, and study.
I will keep a study diary to measure my progress.
I have set aside the time to complete the task and I have all the resources to do it, including a gym membership and meditation app.
Minimizing stress can help me sustainably study for the rest of my time at school.
5 full weeks.

SMART Goals Examples for High School Students

16. apply for five colleges.

“I will apply for five colleges within 3 months.”

Name all 5 colleges that you want to apply for.
Every time I submit my application I can tick off 1/5 of the task.
I will be applying to a range of colleges including my ‘stretch college’ which is less attainable all the way down to my backup college that I’m confident I can get into.
All colleges I will apply for offer majors in the programs I want to specialize in.
This will all be completed exactly 3 months from now.

17. Go to Four University Open Days

“I will go to four university open days within the next 2 months to learn more about the universities and see which one I would prefer.”

“I will study for one hour between 8 am and 9 am daily before class Monday to Friday. I will study for the class that I will be sitting that day and keep a journal of progress.”

I have set specific times for my studying and specific subjects to study for each day.
The journal will be used to track success. Any days missed will have to be made up for in the following days.
I am always free from 8 am to 9 am.
All subjects studied will be relevant to the classes I’m taking.
This will be sustained until the end of the term.

19. Maintain a Regular Sleep Routine

“I will sleep for 9 hours a day by making sure I get into bed by 10 pm every night and set an alarm for 7 am each morning. This will keep me fresh for classes.”

Sleeping for 9 hours per day is very specific.
Alarm reminders that have been pre-set will help me measure and track my use of time.
I know I can do this, I just need motivation and reminders on my phone to tell me that it’s time to go to sleep.
If I have a better sleep routine I will be fresh for classes.
This will be sustained until the end of the term.

20. Research Five Potential Career Options

“I will spend 3 hours every Thursday night researching a potential career option for 5 weeks straight. At the end of the 5th week, I will rank all the career options based on my research.”

The amount of time spent per night and day of the week is specific. I could be more specific by listing the 5 career options that I will research.
The most measurable outcome will be the rankings of career options that I will make at the end. Notes that I take each week may also be a tangible measure of the work I put in.
I have chosen Thursday nights because I am free those nights.
The 5 career options are all options relevant and related to the courses I’m studying at school right now.
This objective will end in 5 weeks at which point I will rank the career options.

21. Have Three Meetings with my Careers Advisor

“I will book in three meetings with my careers advisor over the next six months to check in and re-evaluate my thoughts about what I want to do after I finish high school.”

Mr. Jones will be able to measure if I was successful in attending the meetings.
I am allowed to take time out of classes to attend these meetings so I know they can happen.
Mr. Jones will be able to help me choose a college course or trade.
I can book these 3 meetings in with Mr. Jones now so we know exactly when each meeting happens.

I need to make this decision before next year in order to continue at university.
I am meeting with Mrs. Singh on the 30th of this month to finalize it.

23. Meet Each Instructor in Open Office Hours Once per Semester

“I will meet each of my instructors during their open office hours on Week 8 of the semester to go over my essay drafts.”

Meeting with instructors for 15 minutes during open office hours.
This will be a yes/no measure when I ask myself at the end of Week 8: “did I attend?”
The only barrier is time constraints so I’ll try to book in times that suit myself and my instructor.
The meetings will be specifically about working on my weaknesses so I can get good grades in each class.
I will be able to assess whether I succeeded or failed by the end of Week 8.

24. Meet with my Advisor for Feedback on my Progress 3 Times per Year

“I will meet with my advisor to check in on my progress in my degree 3 times this year. I will meet her in March, July, and September.”

Increase the frequency of discussions about progress and goals to 3 times per year.
This can be measured at the end of March, July, and September as a yes/no grade.
I need to make sure I have the time to do this and will need to coordinate with my advisor on times to meet.
Meeting with my advisor can help me to make sure I’m staying on track and making any necessary changes as I progress through my studies.
This goal will be finalized by the end of September.

25. Attend One Library Skills Seminar per Month

“I will attend one library skills seminar per month until I have attended all the training sessions they have on offer. This should take 6 months and help me incrementally develop my academic skills.”

“I will meet with my study group at 2.30 pm every Tuesday in the library for one hour to compare notes about our studies. We will also meet to check each other’s drafts during this period when necessary.”

We have said exactly when we will meet and where. We could be more specific about which subjects to study – e.g. we will study math for half an hour then legal studies for half an hour.
We will take names and minutes to track who attended.
Everyone has free time on Tuesday at 2.30 pm.
Our study notes will be directly related to the subjects we are taking in class.
We will continue this until the last week of this semester.

27. Complete All Homework Tasks by Wednesday each Week

“I will complete my homework tasks by Wednesday each week this semester. To do this, I will remain at the university library on Tuesdays from 12 noon onwards.”

The weekly time goal is Wednesday morning. The objective will be maintained until the last week of this semester.

28. Turn up to Class on Time

“I will turn up to class five minutes before class begins for the entire semester in order to change my habit of being late. To make this happen, I will take the 8.05 am bus each morning.”

I have stated the time I will get on the bus to be as specific as possible.
I can measure this in two ways: the time I get on the bus and the time I make it into class.
This is an easy task. I just need to go to bed early and wake up on time.
Turning up to class on time is relevant because it will help me to get better grades.
This objective will last until the final day of the semester.

The measurement of success is that I will have the 5 applications submitted by 5 pm Friday.
I am qualified for the internships and have a resume put together already so I should be able to do this. Furthermore, I set “apply for” rather than “obtain” an internship because I can control applications whereas I’m not directly able to control whether I’ll get accepted.
Getting an internship can help me get a job in my desired career after graduating.
The objective will be completed by 5 pm Friday.

See more SMART internship goals here.

I have set Friday at 5 pm next week as my cut-off.

31. Write 400 Words per Day for my Essay

“I will write 400 words per day for 5 days to get my first draft of my essay complete.”

I have specifically noted how many words I will write each day.
I can measure this by using the word counter in Google Docs.
400 words is definitely attainable as it’s only about 2 paragraphs.
Writing these 400 words each can help me get my essay done.
The essay is 2000 words long so the timeline is to have the draft completed within five days.

Success will be measured by both the number of comments (nine total). Furthermore, I would think it’s successful if I engage a peer in a good conversation.
I am able to log in and post comments on my phone so it should be doable.
Engaging in conversation with my peers can help me develop connections that can help me as I go through my degree.
The task will end at 5pm on Friday in three weeks’ time.

35. speak only in spanish for a whole day.

“I will speak only in Spanish for the whole day during my exchange at Barcelona University.”

In all communications with teachers, bus drivers, shop assistants, friends, etc., I will only speak Spanish.
The measurement for this will need to be qualitative, e.g. yes/no to “Did you manage to communicate all day?”
I think I’m ready to do this and I’ve only been speaking English during the day out of nerves that I’ll make a mistake.
Speaking only in Spanish can help me improve my Spanish language skills.
The task will be completed by the end of the day.

See a Full List of Communication Goals Here

36. Apply for an Exchange Scholarship by May 1st

The measurement for success is the submission of the 1000 word essay by 5pm May 1st.
I set my goal as submitting an application rather than winning the scholarship to ensure my goal is something that’s within my power.

The end goal is 5 pm on May 1st.

“My goal is to apply for a work visa by 5 pm on the 30th of December so I can stay in the country after I have completed my degree.”

I will put through my application to upgrade my student visa to a work visa through the government website.
The measure of success will be to have submitted the application by the end of December.
I have set my goal as an application rather than obtaining the visa because it’s more within my power to apply than to obtain.
If I get the work visa then I can use my degree qualifications in the country and make more money here than at home.

The SMART framework is valuable when setting educational goals because it helps you to articulate exactly what your goal is. The five criteria within the framework will force students to set goals that can be clearly explained and are achievable. By setting SMART goals, students can see greater levels of success whether it’s short-term goals or long-term goals and have a clearer idea about what they need to do to meet their goals.

What to consider when writing a graduate school application essay The essay portion of the application is your opportunity to broaden our admissions team’s understanding of your abilities beyond what they can see on your transcript and resume. Writing an essay is your chance to share your unique strengths, personal history, journey of growth, and any additional qualities that show you are a strong candidate.

Preparing to write your essay Prior to starting your essay, read all prompts carefully. Take a moment to reflect on your reasons for pursuing a graduate business degree. It may be beneficial to have a pen and notepad at your disposal for this reflective exercise. Think about your personal journey and pinpoint pivotal moments in your growth and learning, then take note of how those moments have shaped you and your experiences, and how they could help guide you through your business school journey. Be sure to also use the correct formatting and avoid adding lists and bullet points to your essays.

Outline your thoughts Once you have a solid understanding of how to convey your personal journey within the context of the essay prompts, the next step is to construct an outline. As you shape the direction and flow of your essay, always keep your audience in mind. Our admissions team reviews thousands of application essays, so it’s crucial to find a creative hook that will make your story stand out.

Don’t overthink As you begin to write your first draft, allow your ideas to flow freely. Don’t fixate on grammar or finding the perfect words at this stage–simply capture your thoughts on paper. You can refine your essay in the second draft.

Step away After finishing your first draft, set it aside for a day or two before returning to edit it. Revisiting your work with a fresh outlook allows for a new perspective. During this second review, tackle the details of grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. You might find it helpful to read your essay in reverse order to catch any typos.

Ask for feedback Once you feel your essay is in good shape, it’s highly recommended that you share your draft with an advisor, professor, trusted colleague, friend, or even your recommender. Gaining insights from a trustworthy source can enhance the quality of your essay and assist in identifying any typos or minor adjustments. While editing is an important step, it should not cut out your authentic voice and tone. When identifying a proofreader, make sure to find someone who knows your authentic voice and tone and can edit your paper while still preserving your natural voice and tone.

Finalize and submit You’re almost done! Before finalizing your essay submission, do one last review. Run a spell check and read your essay out loud to yourself. This approach can help you pinpoint areas that might require clarification or fine-tuning. As you review your final draft, be sure that you thoroughly addressed the question on the application.

Keep in mind that the essay portion of the application is your chance to set yourself apart Admissions team members want to hear your authentic voice, with a style that sounds natural and genuine. By sharing your authentic self, and your transformative experiences, passions, goals, and voice, you can leave a lasting impression.

Best of luck with the rest of your application journey!
