  • Include lots of colorful vegetables in your diet like sweet potatoes, beets, spinach, and peppers.
  • Choose whole grain options when you eat things like pasta, crackers, cereal, and bread.
  • Eat a variety of proteins including lean meats, chicken, tofu, eggs, seafood, and beans.
  • Go for low-fat or fat-free dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt.
  • Include healthy oils in your food such as vegetable oil, olive oil, and oils from foods like avocados, seafood, and nuts.

Practice mindful eating.

Pay attention to your portion sizes and enjoy your meals.

  • Avoid eating while doing other activities, such as watching TV, scrolling on your mobile device or reading.

As summer approaches and temperatures begin to rise across the United States, it’s crucial to be aware of how the weather can affect your health as you plan your activities. While you probably know to be on alert for hot weather, another factor you may not think of but that is very important is humidity—which is a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air.

It might seem like having a little water in the air would be helpful on a sweltering summer day, but the meteorological reality is a little more complex than that. High humidity levels combined with elevated temperatures can create a dangerous mix, Kevin Lanza, PhD , assistant professor at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, told Verywell.

“Humidity in and of itself is a lesser threat, at least at lower temperatures, but if you’re coupling that with higher temperatures, with hot and humid conditions that’s when you’re potentially in trouble,” said Lanza.

Here are the most important health effects of humidity that you should be aware of, and some expert-backed tips for coping this summer.

When Is Being Outside in Humidity Unsafe?

What’s considered an unsafe high humidity level varies depending on the individual, Shashank Ravi, MD , clinical assistant professor in emergency medicine at Stanford Medicine, told Verywell.

Specific factors, like your hydration level, how long you’re exposed to high humidity, and how much you exert yourself in these conditions, all play into how it affects your well-being. And it’s not just when you’re outside, either. “Being indoors in high humidity without circulating air can also be dangerous,” said Ravi.

In general, when humidity levels are high—above 60%–70%—it can make sweat evaporate from your skin more slowly. That, in turn, makes it harder for your body to cool itself, David Cutler, MD , a board-certified family medicine physician at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, told Verywell.

Inefficient sweating in high humidity “can make people feel hotter than the actual temperature,” said Cutler. “High humidity also increases the heat index, which is the perceived temperature. For example, an actual temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit can feel like 105 degrees Fahrenheit if the humidity is high.”

On the other hand, low humidity levels—below 30%–40%—can also negatively affect your health by causing dry skin and respiratory discomfort. “Low humidity can dry out mucous membranes in the nose and throat, leading to irritation, coughing, and increased susceptibility to respiratory infections,” said Cutler.

The best way to measure humidity levels is with a hygrometer, according to Cutler. The device, which may have a digital readout or dial like a thermometer, displays the humidity percentage relative to the maximum moisture capacity of the air at the present temperature. Basically, it shows you how much water is actually in the air relative to how much could possibly be held in the air at a specific temperature.

If you don’t have a hygrometer to get an exact reading, you can also check the humidity levels in weather apps or on forecast websites. Humidity levels also fluctuate throughout the day and will depend on other conditions, like rain.

How Does Humidity Affect Your Health? 

Humidity’s effect on the human body and your health really depends on how the level interacts with temperature, according to Lanza. While humidity by itself may not pose a major threat—especially at lower temperatures—its effects can be serious when combined with heat.

Our body’s thermal regulation system plays an important role in maintaining our internal core temperature, and sweating is the primary way we cool down, said Lanza. However, as mentioned before, humidity can really slow that process.

“That evaporation of the sweat from our skin is what cools the body and ultimately lowers our internal body temperature,” said Lanza. “But on days that are humid, sweating is not as effective at lowering the body’s internal temperature because the moisture in the air keeps the sweat from evaporating as easily.”

Therefore, high humidity can lead to health concerns and even make individuals “more susceptible to health risks like dehydration and fatigue,” added Ravi. Here are just a few things that can happen when you’re dealing with high humidity and heat:

  • Dehydration: High humidity levels can lead to excessive sweating and cause the body to lose fluids faster, according to Ravi. If hydration levels are not replenished quickly, it can lead to dehydration and symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and confusion.
  • Skin irritation: Humid conditions can cause skin irritation, such as heat rashes and even fungal infections, when there’s prolonged exposure to both heat and moisture, according to Lanza. High humidity can also make the skin oily and worsen conditions like acne, added Cutler.
  • Muscle cramps: In humid conditions, people may lose too many electrolytes, which can shock the muscles and lead to cramping in the arms, legs, or abdomen, according to Lanza.
  • Worsen respiratory conditions: High humidity can exacerbate respiratory conditions like asthma and allergies by promoting the growth of mold, dust mites, and bacteria, according to Cutler, who added that the thick, moist air can trigger breathing trouble and symptoms.
  • Heat exhaustion and heat stroke : High humidity can increase the risk of serious heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke because the body’s cooling mechanism is less effective, according to Cutler. When the body can’t regulate its own temperature and starts to overheat, it can cause organ damage or even failure.

Who Is Most at Risk for Heat-Related Illness? 

Everyone is affected by extreme heat and humid conditions, but certain groups are more vulnerable to heat-related illness than others, according to Lanza.

  • Young children: Children—especially infants and toddlers—have a smaller body mass to surface area ratio than adults, which makes them more susceptible to heat stress.
  • Older adults: Older adults are at higher risk of heat-related illnesses and may even be more like to die from them due to age-related changes that make them less effective at regulating their body temperature. As we age, our bodies produce less sweat, affecting our ability to cool down in hot environments.
  • Individuals with existing medical conditions or chronic conditions: People with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and respiratory disorders are more vulnerable to extreme heat and related conditions because they can be less likely to sense and respond to changes in temperature. People who are overweight or obese may also retain more body heat, which can make overheating more likely.
  • Those on certain medications: Diuretics, antihistamines, antidepressants, and other medications can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature and increase the risk of dehydration.
  • Individuals who work in outdoor conditions: People who work outdoors, such as construction workers, agricultural workers, and landscapers, are at a higher risk for heat illness due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures paired with physical exertion.

Early Signs Humidity Is Negatively Affecting Your Health 

It’s important to recognize the early signs that weather conditions like heat and humidity are affecting your health, according to Ravi. Some early indicators that humidity might be affecting your health are similar to symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which include:

  • Increased sweating
  • Heart racing
  • Fatigue 
  • Difficulty walking
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Confusion or altered mental status in severe cases

If you notice any of these early symptoms, Lanza recommends stopping physical activity, such as running or biking, or removing yourself from the situation that caused the symptoms—be it seeking shelter in the shade or going inside a climate-controlled, air-conditioned environment. You should also replenish lost fluids with cold water or a sports drink to restore electrolyte balance.

How to Stay Safe During the Summer 

With summer around the corner, your best defense is taking proactive measures to prevent heat-related illnesses and the health effects of high heat and humidity, according to Lanza.

“The best way to prevent symptoms is to never allow them to even start by being proactive with how one prepares in the warm season, especially from May to September in the United States,” Lanza said.

Here’s what you can do this summer season to avoid putting your health at risk in high temps and humid conditions:

  • Check the weather and humidity levels before going outside: Lanza recommends checking the weather no matter what your plans are, but definitely if you’ll be doing outdoor activities. Knowing the forecast for heat and humidity can help you prep and pack accordingly, such as making sure you have enough water or sunscreen.
  • Limit sun exposure/exercise during hotter times of day: Ravi suggests avoiding being outside during peak heat hours to reduce the risk of heat-related illness. If you plan to exercise, try to do so when it’s cooler, such as in the early morning hours or late evening, to avoid the risk of overheating or dehydration, Lanza added.
  • Take breaks in cool or air-conditioned environments: When you can, take breaks and spend time in cool or air-conditioned environments to help lower your body temperature, said Lanza. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, head to places like local coffee shops, malls, libraries, museums, or community centers.
  • Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing: Opt for light-colored, loose-fitting, and lightweight clothing to help your body stay cool, said Lanza. Flowy and lightweight clothes let air circulate against your skin, allowing sweat to evaporate instead of trapping it.
  • Stay hydrated: It’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain your level of hydration, Lanza said. Avoid drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  • Have your social network nearby: A lot of heat-related illnesses and medical emergencies occur because people are alone or don’t recognize their symptoms, according to Lanza. When you have social support nearby, you can have someone to help you in case of an emergency—or even simply remind you to rest and rehydrate.

What This Means For You

Hot and humid conditions can lead to dehydration, muscle cramps, and heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Experts recommend staying hydrated, wearing light-colored clothing, and limiting sun exposure to avoid these health risks during the summer months.

Rural U.S. health care is in a crisis. We went to a Georgia town to see how people there experience it

Imagine you’re having a heart attack and the nearest hospital is almost an hour away.

What do you do?

That’s a situation some of the 46 million Americans who live in rural areas could find themselves in, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They’re more likely to die than someone who lives in an urban area due to having limited access to emergency services and specialized care.

Morning Edition wanted to see first-hand what this challenge looks like, so we visited Elberton, Georgia, which bills itself as the “Granite Capital of the World.” The town with fewer than 5,000 people sits a couple of hours east of Atlanta near the South Carolina border.

Office manager Brooke McDowell said they don’t quiet down, not even at night.

The center is officially designated by the government as a Rural Health Clinic , which means it can get more money for treating people with Medicare and Medicaid. About 70% of the center’s patients fit that profile.

The clinic offers services like primary care, gynecology, X-rays and chronic disease management. Dr. Dan McAvoy, who sat with us for an interview, said the clinic has six physicians and two nurse practitioners.

“Probably the most common things we handle are hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke,” McAvoy said.

If not for this clinic, he said, most people would have to go to cities that sit 30 to 40 miles away. That can be a barrier for some patients, McAvoy said, because they don’t have transportation available to them.

Beyond that, many rural hospitals have been closing across the country. From 2010 to 2019, 114 closed or cut key services across the U.S., according to health policy nonprofit KFF . Closures are concentrated in states like Georgia that haven’t expanded Medicaid, the joint state and federal program that provides health coverage to low-income people.

In Georgia specifically, 18 of its 30 rural hospitals are at risk of closing due to financial issues, according to a February 2024 report from health consulting firm Chartis. The report also found that about half of all rural hospitals in the U.S. are operating in the red.

“Why do melons get married?” she asked us and waited for a guess. “Because they cantaloupe.”

Chapman retired after 34 and a half years in public service and moved to Elberton seven years ago. She’s been a patient at the clinic for six years and she likes it here. “They let me tell my jokes. They tolerate me, so that’s not bad,” she said.

She’s had a couple of strokes, and every now and then, she needs to see specialists. The medical center helps her with referrals, and she likes her doctor. She’s also able to visit the nearby Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Where would she go if this clinic wasn’t here?

Athens, Georgia, takes her about 50 minutes to get to, or the town of Anderson, which is slightly closer but across the state line into South Carolina.

Would she skip care if what she needed was farther away?

“It’s easier to come here,” she said, adding that she would travel farther if needed. But the headache would be her husband’s because she rarely does any of the driving. “Whenever I tell my husband I have an appointment, he says, ‘Where is it?’”

He’s relieved to hear when they’re in town.

“You need this. You don’t need to get rid of this place,” she said, of the Medical Center of Elberton. “You have too many people in the waiting room, so you know it's a needed place. Very convenient for the locals.”

The local need is highlighted in Dr. Jonathan Poon’s schedule: It’s early May and he’s already booked out until July

It’s not a good feeling, Poon said, because he doesn’t want to be inaccessible to his patients.

“We will see, you know, our patients walk in without appointments any day. We'll work them in,” Poon said. “But it's just not a good feeling when someone calls and they have to wait for a month or more for appointments.”

It's a balance, Poon said, because he wishes he could spend more time with patients.

“But the more time we spend with patients means the fewer patients you can spend time with,” Poon said.

“Maybe I can’t clone myself, but if we can have more providers to help see our patients who have the same passion we do, that would be a great start,” Poon said.

That will be a challenge the clinic will have to grapple with sooner than later.

“Particularly, as some of us are aging, there’s going to be a need in the next few years for more physicians,” McAvoy said.

But it’s difficult to get doctors to move out this way.

“We have to find someone who likes the lifestyle of living in a small community and enjoys outdoors things, such as fishing and hunting,” McAvoy said.

Poon told us that one of the medical services most lacking here is mental health care

Poon said he and other doctors here have noticed mental health needs have become more of an issue over the past few years, but the clinic is limited in what it can do.

“We just don't have really a stable mental health program here,” Poon said. “And so we'd like to, you know, ultimately offer that ourselves. But there's no real, kind of, direct way for rural health to offer that.”

Georgia ranked 49th in access to mental health care and first in prevalence of mental illness in the 2023 report from Mental Health America , a nonprofit that works to provide resources and advocates for more access.

In Atlanta, we asked Kim Jones , the executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness for Georgia, why access is such an issue here.

She said that federal law requires insurance companies to provide mental health care at the same level that they do for physical health. Her organization has found that isn’t happening in Georgia.

But it’s also something people are uncomfortable talking about.

“I think there's just this overall stigma that mental health is maybe more so based on your behavior and your beliefs and pull up your bootstraps and just get over it. Versus it truly being a physical chemical imbalance in your brain at times,” Jones said.

With access overall in Georgia already a challenge, Jones said rural towns and counties fare even worse.

“There are a significant number of counties here in Georgia that have no mental health providers at all,” she said. “And so, even when we look at trying to expand telehealth, we have areas that are not covered by the internet.”

Despite the challenge of accessing health care, Sylvia Chapman tells us why this small town life appeals to her.

“I don’t have to fight traffic in the metro areas,” she said. She’s enjoying her retirement, playing games and puzzles on her phone. She and her husband will celebrate 47 years of marriage later in August.

She’ll keep coming to this clinic for her health care

She’ll also be watching the November election.

As someone who spent her working life helping Georgians get Medicaid, she recognizes the importance of health care as an issue.

“People are deciding whether to buy groceries or buy medicines. And that's the same problem we had back in the seventies and eighties,” Chapman said, adding that how people vote in November will be “very important” in deciding if Americans continue to face that challenge.

Once you start stacking Max Life, you then want to turn to increasing your Max Life percentage. This is done in a number of ways:

  • Obviously putting Royal Rubies in all your armor slots will start the process.
  • Look at all skills that increase Max Life and try to get rolls on gear that increase the passives in particular. For Barbarian, for instance, that would be Imposing Presence. With how many points you can find on defensive armor pieces, you can stack that very, very high for big bonuses.
  • Then there is the Paragon Board, which includes very important nodes to increase Max Life. The most important are Tenacity Rare nodes which can give you 12% Max Life if requirements are met. Then, they are usually surrounded by 2% Max Life blue nodes. Once you really start scaling, even a 2% node can be something like 8,000 extra life.
  • The Elixir of Antivenin will give you 15% increase Max Life for 30 minutes which again, will be an enormous amount due to scaling. It’s a basic potion that is cheap to craft so you can essentially have it running at all times.

One important reason Max Life is so good is because many healing elements scale on percent life, not individual values. The most prominent example of this is your basic healing potion, which heals 35% of your life over a few seconds. When you’re up at 50,000 health that’s 17,500 health. At 500,000 health, that’s 175,000 health. And this is true for skills that heal X% of your life per second, like modified Barbarian shout skills, for instance.

Downsides? Well, devoting this much to health may decrease your DPS, but at higher levels, it’s about slow and steady winning the race a lot of the time as you just want to survive, and this massive amount of life will allow you to do just that. However, another bad thing is that the more uniques you use, the less base life you can get as so many do not roll with that stat, which undercuts this whole idea. But with so many other defensive stats capped, Max Life is the way to go until…Blizzard nerfs it. Thanks to Rob2628 for the info.

Lawyers to Plastics Makers: Prepare for ‘Astronomical’ PFAS Lawsuits

At an industry presentation about dangerous “forever chemicals,” lawyers predicted a wave of lawsuits that could dwarf asbestos litigation, audio from the event revealed.

The defense lawyer minced no words as he addressed a room full of plastic-industry executives. Prepare for a wave of lawsuits​ with​ potentially “astronomical” costs​. Speaking at a conference earlier this year, the lawyer, Brian Gross, said the coming litigation could “dwarf anything related to asbestos,” one of the most sprawling corporate-liability battles in United States history.

Mr. Gross was referring to PFAS, the “forever chemicals” that have emerged as one of the major pollution issues of our time. Used for decades in countless everyday objects — cosmetics, takeout containers, frying pans — PFAS have been linked to serious health risks including cancer. Last month the federal government said several types of PFAS must be removed from the drinking water of hundreds of millions of Americans .

“Do what you can, while you can, before you get sued,” Mr. Gross said at the February session, according to a recording of the event made by a participant and examined by The New York Times. “Review any marketing materials or other communications that you’ve had with your customers, with your suppliers, see whether there’s anything in those documents that’s problematic to your defense,” he said. “Weed out people and find the right witness to represent your company.”

A spokesman for Mr. Gross’s employer, MG+M The Law Firm, which defends companies in high-stakes litigation, didn’t respond to questions about Mr. Gross’s remarks and said he was unavailable to discuss them.

A wide swath of the chemicals, plastics and related industries are gearing up to fight a surge in litigation related to PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a class of nearly 15,000 versatile synthetic chemicals linked to serious health problems.

PFAS chemicals have been detected almost everywhere scientists have looked: in drinking water, in rain falling over the Great Lakes , even in Antarctic snow . They are thought to be present in the blood of nearly every American . Researchers have linked exposure to PFAS to testicular and kidney cancers, developmental delays in children, decreased fertility, liver damage and thyroid disease. The man-made chemicals are so long-lasting that scientists haven’t been able to reliably identify how long it might take for them to break down.

PFAS-related lawsuits have already targeted manufacturers in the United States, including DuPont, its spinoff Chemours, and 3M. Last year, 3M agreed to pay at least $10 billion to water utilities across the United States that had sought compensation for cleanup costs. Thirty state attorneys general have also sued PFAS manufacturers, accusing the manufacturers of widespread contamination.

But experts say the legal battle is just beginning. Under increasing scrutiny are a wider universe of companies that use PFAS in their products. This month, plaintiffs filed a class-action lawsuit against Bic, accusing the razor company for failing to disclose that some of its razors contained PFAS.

Bic said it doesn’t comment on pending litigation, and said it had a longstanding commitment to safety.

The Biden administration has moved to regulate the chemicals, for the first time requiring municipal water systems to remove six types of PFAS . Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency also designated two of those PFAS chemicals as hazardous substances under the Superfund law, shifting responsibility for their cleanup at contaminated sites from taxpayers to polluters.

Both rules are expected to prompt a new round of litigation from water utilities, local communities and others suing for cleanup costs.

“To say that the floodgates are opening is an understatement,” said Emily M. Lamond, an attorney who focuses on environmental litigation at the law firm Cole Schotz. “Take tobacco, asbestos, MTBE, combine them, and I think we’re still going to see more PFAS-related litigation,” she said, referring to methyl tert-butyl ether, a former harmful gasoline additive that contaminated drinking water. Together, the trio led to claims totaling hundreds of billions of dollars.

PFAS were an industrial marvel when chemists at Dupont in the 1940s synthesized the material, a remarkably durable compound resistant to water, stains, heat and grease. It quickly became a mainstay in DuPont’s Teflon nonstick pans and 3M’s Scotchgard fabric protector. A powerful fire suppressant, it helped firefighters battle flames. Today, they are used for everyday items as varied as microwave popcorn bags, shampoos, raincoats and firefighting foam.

But the very qualities that have made PFAS so valuable have also prevented them from breaking down naturally in the environment. As PFAS entered the environment from factories, products and landfills, the chemicals have started to accumulate in water, air and soil.

Industry documents released through litigation show that manufacturers found adverse health effects from PFAS exposure as early as 1961 . But it wasn’t until the early 2000s that questions increasingly emerged in public about their safety. In 2005, the E.P.A. fined DuPont $10 million , at that time the largest administrative fine ever levied by the agency, for failing to disclose PFAS’s adverse effects.​​

All that has set the stage for a potential legal storm. Unlike tobacco, used by only a subset of the public, “pretty much every one of us in the United States is walking around with PFAS in our bodies,” said Erik Olson, senior strategic director for environmental health at the Natural Resources Defense Council. “And we’re being exposed without our knowledge or consent, often by industries that knew how dangerous the chemicals were, and failed to disclose that,” he said. “That’s a formula for really significant liability.”

Sandy Wynn-Stelt of Belmont, Mich., brought one early case. A year after she lost her husband to liver cancer in 2016, she discovered that the Christmas tree farm in front of her home, which had seemed such an idyllic setting, had been a dumping ground for PFAS-laden tannery waste from Wolverine World Wide, the maker of Hush Puppies shoes.

Wolverine had been among the first to license 3M’s Scotchgard for its waterproof footwear. Mrs. Wynn-Stelt got her blood tested, and found PFAS levels hundreds of times the norm. In 2020, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

She sued Wolverine and 3M, and reached a settlement in 2021. Separately, nearly 2,000 local residents settled a class-action lawsuit against Wolverine. The region’s water source remains polluted with PFAS.

“Those lawyers are exactly right. This is going to be huge, now that people are starting to hold companies accountable,” Mrs. Wynn-Stelt said.

Wolverine declined to comment. 3M said it continued to “address PFAS litigation by defending itself in court or through negotiated resolutions.”

Much of the course of future litigation hinges on the evidence over PFAS’s health risks. There is broad scientific consensus that certain PFAS chemicals are harmful. “There’s a weight of evidence,” said Linda Birnbaum, a toxicologist and the former director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. “Multiple studies by different investigators, and in different populations.”

Max Swetman, another MG+M partner who presented with Mr. Gross at the February industry conference, addressed the research in his remarks to the group. “There’s a whole lot of new science being created,” he said. “It’s not the best for us.”

Still, some of the research could be vulnerable to criticism, he said. Getting the right experts to testify was crucial, he said. “Epidemiologists, if you get the right one, is always going to be your best expert in trial.”

Mr. Swetman was unavailable to comment on his remarks, according to his law firm.

One challenge facing medical research lies in the sheer number of different PFAS chemicals that have now entered the environment, each of which can have slightly different health effects, said Steph Tai, associate dean at the University of Wisconsin’s Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and an expert in the use of science in environmental protection and litigation.

“The other thing, too, is that it takes a long time for health effects to show up,” Dr. Tai said, so the only way that scientists have been able to assess those effects is through long-term studies. Researchers must essentially look for what is referred to as “natural experiments,” according to Dr. Tai, comparing people who are naturally less exposed to PFAS with those who are more exposed. That inevitably leads to some uncertainties.

The industry has scored some major victories. Last November, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit tossed out a lawsuit that would have covered every Ohio citizen in a major case over exposure to PFAS, ruling that a firefighter who brought the lawsuit failed to prove that the PFAS found in his blood specifically came from the companies he sued.

3M phased out most uses of two of the most widely used PFAS chemicals, PFOS and PFOA, in the early 2000s, and DuPont in 2015 stopped using PFOA. 3M has said it will phase out the manufacturing of PFAS chemicals by the end of next year. The company will also work to discontinue their use in products, though that’s contingent on the company finding substitutes.

“As the science and technology of PFAS, societal and regulatory expectations, and our expectations of ourselves have evolved, so has how we manage PFAS,” 3M said.

DuPont referred inquiries to Chemours, the company that was spun off in 2015. Chemours declined to comment.

A long and difficult cleanup is beginning. President Biden’s 2021 infrastructure law provides $9 billion to help communities address PFAS contamination, and the E.P.A. has said $1 billion of that money would be set aside to help states with initial testing and treatment. Meantime, new kinds of PFAS are still being released into the environment. Scientists are working to learn more about them.

Researchers say people who don't stay properly hydrated face a higher risk of these painful mineral deposits as temperatures and humidity rise in the summer. On top of that, they noted that in general people whose diet is packed with too much sodium, fat and sugar, could find themselves among the 1 in 10 Americans who will get a kidney stone in their lifetimes.

Kidney stones are formed when minerals from urine crystalize into a small stone or pebble-like mass. These stones can become lodged in the ureter, the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder. The stones sometimes cause an obstruction that makes it difficult to urinate and triggers a sharp pain in the side or lower back. Some stones pass on their own and cause little or no discomfort.

Summer is a key time to pay attention to these deposits, since there's a greater risk of kidney stones when temperatures rise and people don't stay hydrated, said Dr. Ivan E. Porter, a nephrologist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. When its hot and people sweat more but don't drink sufficient water or other fluids, those conditions "absolutely can relate to an increased risk of both stone events and stone formation," Porter said.

A 2023 study published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases reported emergency room visits to New York state hospitals for kidney stones, urinary tract infections and other kidney injuries increased during warmer months, particularly during "transitional" months of May when weather warms and September as summer trails off.

The research suggests people likely aren't prepared when temperatures rise, said Dr. Shao Lin, a professor of environmental health at State University of New York at Albany and study co-author. The problem, she said: People spend too much time in the sun, don't drink enough water or don't turn on their air conditioner when temperatures rise.

"The human body has not yet adapted to the hot weather in May," Lin said. "People are not ready for that."

Beyond elevated risk due to heat and lack of hydration, other factors likely have accelerated the rising number of kidney stone cases. Kidney stone rates in the United States increased from 3.8% in the late 1970s to about 10% a decade ago, according to the National Kidney Foundation.

"Over the last couple of decades, where we've seen some other diseases drop off or slow down, kidney stones have not. It's continued to increase," said Dr. Timothy Averch, a urologist in Columbia, South Carolina.

Averch said warming temperatures worldwide might contribute to rising rates of kidney stones, but, he said, diets are also likely a major explanation.

"What we eat is not super healthy when it comes to kidney stones, and even some of the things we consider healthy can have a negative effect on kidney stone formation," Averch said.

What can I do to lower my risk of kidney stones?

The most important thing is to drink plenty of water or other fluids with citrate, such as lemonade or lemon juice, to stay hydrated, Averch said. Equally important is avoiding or minimizing intake of drinks that can dehydrate such as coffee and alcohol.

Doctors also recommend avoiding foods with a lot of sodium. Processed foods are often packed with sodium and should be avoided, Porter said.

"The majority of salt we get in a normal American diet does not come from the salt shaker," Porter said. "It comes from processed foods. So it's something out of a can or something out of a bag."

People also should avoid eating diets with an excess amount of animal proteins and fats. Averch cited one study from Italian researchers that showed diets heavy in animal protein led to hypercalcemia, or too much calcium in the blood.

Researchers also have busted diet myths. A few decades ago, people were advised they could be at risk for kidney stones if they drank too much milk or consumed a lot of dairy products such as cheese or yogurt. But diet studies have shown that such calcium-rich foods had the opposite effect - they reduced the risk of a type of kidney stone called calcium oxalate stones.

"Those who increased dairy intake with cheese, milk, yogurt, those patients actually had lower metabolic risk factors for stones," Porter said.

However, people who take large dosages of calcium supplements might face a higher risk, he said.

"So a diet rich in calcium is good. Calcium supplements, not so good," Porter said.

What to do if you have kidney stone symptoms

People with kidney stones might first recognize sharp pain in the lower back or side that radiates down to the groin. Others have described having a more general pain or stomachache that won't go away.

Other symptoms can include blood in the urine or a burning sensation when urinating, as well as nausea, vomiting, fever and chills.

Doctors can check whether you have a stone or might order imaging tests to determine the size of the stone. They may also order blood tests to check for signs of calcium, phosphorus and uric acid tests. Many patients are able to pass stones on their own, but some need them removed. If you've had a stone, you have a 50% risk of developing another within five to seven years, according to the National Kidney Foundation.

If you suspect you might have one, it's always better to get checked, doctors said.

"If you're not sure what that is, and never had a kidney stone before, you should probably seek medical care," Averch said.
