A hearty welcome to each and everyone one presents here. Today we have come together to talk through How to overcome Exam Fever? This is a much-required discussion for current generation students who are always on the constant run to keep up the pace to match the society. Exams are always a scary word for most students; it is at that stage of life that one is at a higher level of stress, especially when there is an important exam coming up.

However, with a little bit of dedication and self-confidence, one can beat Exam fever and prosper.

A little bit of tension always helps to be prepared and helps in improving the performance. But it becomes a problem when it is beyond the normal level of control; it can stand as a hindrance to how a student performs. To overcome this, it is important to set a target, prepare a timetable, and make sure to follow it regularly. Follow a healthy sleep time by getting a minimum sleep of seven to eight hours.

Irregular sleep cycles can tire out the body and bring down concentration. With a proper sleep pattern and eating healthy food, one will be able to manage time and concentrate well. 

Not forgetting, parents play a very important role in helping their child to overcome fear. They should talk to their child often and motivate them by telling them it’s okay even if they don’t succeed but what matters here is the amount of effort they have put in it to reach their goal.

This can help a child who is going to face an exam as motivation to do better and helps to stress less and concentrate more on the work to be done. It can help to boost self-confidence and give them the energy to perform better in their exams.  

In between the strenuous preparation, it is a good practice to take short breaks, like a walk for 15 minutes or having a chat with someone. It will help to relax and give mental peace. Never pile up work for the next day or next hour; procrastination always comes with a price to pay! Finishing the work allocated for the hour as per the timetable prepared can be very helpful in managing time.

Dedication is the key here; dedicate your time and ensure to finish all the topics before the exam. It is a good habit to revise before an exam rather than reading something entirely new.

There is also a great saying: Practice makes a man perfect; yes indeed, the more practice, the better the results; whenever possible, taking up a mock test will help in knowing the understanding level of the topic. Remember! Not to compare with fellow students, as each one is unique and has its own capability and talent.

It is said when examinations are approaching, students suffer from examination fever. And rightly examinations are regarded as a curse by students. The approach of examinations means the beginning of fear in the mind of a student. As a matter of fact, examinations are the only hurdles in an otherwise happy and carefree life of a student.

The bugbear of an examination interrupts the smooth course of a student’s life; games, musical concerts, debates and activities are all stopped when examinations are nearing. Students are not to be found at the cinema houses, restaurants and other places of entertainment during those days.

Examinations are held to test student’s ability, to cheek up to the work they have done during a term, to judge what progress they have made and to determine whether they have been utilising or wasting their time.

If there were no examinations, the merits of the various students could not be judged, nor would the majority of students take any interest as it is only the fear of examinations that makes students work. They know that if they keep on neglecting their books, they will be exposed in examinations.

They are aware that their marks will be communicated to the guardians who will take them to task if the results are not satisfactory. They know also that if they fail they will experience a feeling of humiliation. All these things combine to urge a student to hard work. Examinations are, therefore, an incentive to work hard.

But examinations are not a reliable test of the ability of students. A student may memorise certain portions of the text a question is set from the portions he had prepared, he will no doubt secure good marks, while another student brighter and more intelligent than the first one, may not show good results because he did not especially prepare the questions which were set in the examination.

Similarly, it may be said that the standard of marking all the papers is not the same, because different examiners mark different papers in different moods. Most educationists now agree that a simple crucial examination is certainly no test of ability. They insist upon a series of practical tests of knowledge and intelligence over a period of two or three years.

The results of all these tests, they say, should be taken into account when judging a student’s ability The argument has no doubt a good deal of truth in it. But on the whole, it may be said that good students do not usually show bad results and that negligent students do not generally pass.

It cannot be denied, however, that examinations do exert an unusual strain upon the minds of the students who lose all their zest for life at the approach of an examination. Tutors are engaged, notes and guess-papers are purchased, special lectures are attended and coaching classes thronged.

In short, all possible measures are taken to get through the examination. The reason for all this is that throughout the term the students pay little heed to their studies and so when a test is near they have to concentrate all their energies on studies.

The scheme of internal assessment introduced some years ago by some institutions is intended as a step in the direction to keep a watch on the students’ labour and regularity in their studies. However, even this has its own drawbacks.

We often come across the terms “examination fever” or “examination phobia”, which is described as fear of exams experienced by students ahead of their examinations. It is almost a ritual for students to experience this heart-wrenching feeling as the exam window narrows. The fear of the unknown dawns and engulfs all students. However, how long will this feeling flustered your academic life? Now is the time to take appropriate measures.

A phobia is explained as an intense fear of something that may or may not possess any actual threat in reality. Everyone experiences some kind of anxiety or phobia from time to time which results from a situation that we perceive as threatening, such as having to do an oral presentation, having a near-miss with a car, or waiting for the results of a lab test. A phobia may turn you down and at times may become your greatest enemy or hurdle in your life. Examination phobia among students can be a great hurdle for their academic success. 

Students become extremely worried about how they will revise and perform in their papers. It has been often observed among the students that suddenly something feels wrong; they feel like they might be losing control. You feel physical symptoms that mimic serious health problems and in some cases, you feel as if death or doom is imminent.

Causes of exam phobia

Scientifically, examination phobia is a result of anxiety and is often termed as test anxiety. Test anxiety is a type of anxiety that can affect a test taker before, during, or after a test. It is an issue that many students deal with at one time or another and at times can hamper their performance badly.

A lot of people think that the cause of examination fever is an inadequate preparation for the test that makes students sick fearing bad results, which is not true. Exam anxiety can be caused due to under-preparedness as well as over-preparedness also. Test anxiety can also be experienced at varying levels and may range from slight exam stress that can help you by providing alertness, readiness, and help you to concentrate. However, excessive exam anxiety can result in stress and negatively affect performance and can also lead to forgetfulness or dizziness.

It has been observed that children attend classes regularly, completed homework, and studied regularly. He or she arrives at the exam confident about the material, but is not able to perform well owing to test anxiety. If students develop test anxiety, a type of performance anxiety, taking the test becomes really difficult for them. Fear of failure, lack of preparation or over preparation and lack of experience in handling high-pressure situations. Everyone feels somewhat anxious before they begin to take a test which is a normal part of life. Anxiety often serves as a good form of adrenaline. However, in a few people this adrenaline rush exceeds normal limits and at times may lead to some negative consequences. Anxiety becomes a problem when it begins to interfere with a student's ability to think logically or remember facts. 

Symptoms of test anxiety

Physical symptoms of real test anxiety include tense muscles, sweaty palms, pounding heart, and feeling faint or nauseous. Cognitive symptoms include inability to remember simple things, illogical thinking, and mental blocks. However, it is very important that if a student faces anxiety that causes some physical imbalance or hampers his performance then one must consult a doctor.

If you are suffering from any kind of phobia, you'll often experience a host of physical and mental symptoms that can leave you severely frightened and incredibly drained once they pass. Common phobias and fears include closed-in places, heights, highway driving, flying insects, snakes, and needles.

However, we can develop phobias of virtually anything. A headache, nausea, diarrhea, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, light-headedness and feeling faint can all occur. Phobias can lead to a panic attack, which is the abrupt onset of intense fear or discomfort in which individuals may feel like they are unable to breathe or having a heart attack.

Most phobias develop in childhood, but it is also possible that these can also develop in adults too. In phobia even if you realize that your fear is unreasonable then also you can’t do anything about it and can’t control your feelings, whenever you’re actually exposed to the thing you fear, the terror is automatic and overwhelming.

Why do some people experience anxiety disorders?

Since long ago research has been conducted about anxiety and its effect, but still, researchers don't know exactly why some people experience anxiety disorders, they do know that there are various factors involved. Like many other mental health conditions, anxiety disorders seem to be a result of a combination of biological, psychological, and other individual factors. Anxiety has often been linked to stressful situations leading to an adrenaline rush.

Tension or fear is not the only reason for the anxiety; however, excitement can also be a reason for anxiety. How we think and react to certain situations can affect anxiety to a great extent.

Psychologists believe that we can deal with anxiety to a great extent by the way we actually take up an event. Some people may perceive certain situations to be more dangerous than they actually are e.g., fear of flying or swimming and most of the time end up developing a phobia.

It is also evident that at times people may have had a bad experience with a particular thing and they fear this will happen again to them. Some psychologists believe that childhood experiences can also contribute towards anxiety to a great extent.

A lot of people think that examination phobia is the result of under-preparation for a test or an examination and fear of flunking the exam leads to a stressful situation for the students or a phobia. However, research specialists have simply discarded this theory and made this point clear that examination phobia can be observed among an underprepared, fully prepared, normally prepared as well as an over-prepared student.

A lot of times the most anxious people tend to be the ones who are least prepared, but occasionally they are the high achievers for whom only the top grades will do and even bright students who have prepared well may also experience anxiety that may cause an examination phobia. Examinations vary in their intentions and purpose, and the fact that they are often only revealed at the time of the exam makes them unpredictable.

A lot of preparation and expectations are also facts that trigger stress among the students. Lack of predictability and control are sure to make most people feel anxious and this is a fact of life not simply examinations. You can improve your odds if you have a broad understanding of the topic. You will find this helps your ability to answer the question(s) in the form the examiner has set.

It is important to realize in time that you have developed a phobia from something and overcome your phobia at the right time before it ruins a good opportunity of your life. It is important to realize that factors such as caffeine, alcohol, and certain medications can cause anxiety symptoms. Traumatic life events such as the death of a family member, witnessing a death, war, and natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes may trigger anxiety disorders or phobias.

If you are suffering from any kind of phobia, it is important that you must act to overcome your problem before it takes on you. When it comes to treating phobias, self-help strategies and therapy can both be effective. What’s best for you depends on a number of factors, including the severity of your phobia, your insurance coverage, and the amount of support you need.

As a general rule, self-help is always worth a try. The more you can do for yourself, the more in control you’ll feel which goes a long way when it comes to phobias and fears. However, if your phobia is so severe that it triggers panic attacks or uncontrollable anxiety, you may want to get additional support, do not hesitate to get professional support if the problem is serious.

Yoga and meditation is also effective in keeping your mind calm and developing your inner strength.

If you are trying self-therapy then you must start with full confidence and motivation. Face your fears, one step at a time and should never consider stepping back an option. It’s only natural to want to avoid the thing or situation you fear but this time don’t avoid them rather find your ways out to deal with those.

When it comes to overcoming phobias, facing your fears is the key. Face your phobias fearlessly and you will wonder that no longer these would be a problem for you. While avoidance may make you feel better in the short-term, it prevents you from learning that your phobia may not be as frightening or overwhelming as you think. You never get the chance to learn how to cope with your fears and experience control over the situation. As a result, the phobia becomes increasingly scarier and more daunting in your mind. Hence don’t fear, just face these strongly and kick your phobias away from your life forever.

If you regularly become excessively nervous before or during an important exam, you may have “testophobia”. It is mostly called “examinophobia” or “exam fever”.

It is a very common phenomenon among students especially when an important examination is at their door step. It is extremely disastrous as it affects them psychologically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. In fact, even Albert Einstein suffered from exam fever, and Winston Churchill only managed to write his name when he was appearing for an entrance exam.

When I was in the 9th grade, I skipped my “Maths” paper by pretending to be unwell. Am I proud of it? No. I wish I hadn’t done that, I wish I’d mustered up the courage to at least take the exam, irrespective of its consequences. Why did I do this? Because my dad is a Math genius and the thought of disappointing him made my blood run cold.

Did you know 66% of students admitted that their parents pressurise them for better academic performance? The pressure from non-graduate parents was more compared to parents those were graduates and post graduates. Although too much pressure is a bad thing, I believe that a little bit of coaxing can be a good thing, as it motivates the students to knuckle down and work hard. But let’s face it, exams can make our stress alarms go off, which can stop students from performing their best. Hence, it’s imperative to address it and get it back under control.

In most cases, exam stress is caused by the fear of failing an exam and it can also be caused by:

  • Low motivation levels
  • Lack of preparation and planning
  • High expectations from others
  • Competition from peers

Ways to help eliminate exam stress

Before an exam.

  • If you can concentrate well in the morning then do most of your studying before lunch, not late at night when you can’t concentrate. If you can study at night then study at later half of the day, but go to bed at a reasonable hour and get enough sleep.
  • Try answering questions from past exam papers or you can also try explaining tricky answers to someone else to make sure you have understood it.
  • Always ask for help if there are things you don’t understand, and especially if you are feeling, stressed out.
  • On the day of the exam, avoid talking to friends who get stressed easily. You know the ones with cue cards outside of the exam hall, frantically trying to remember key dates and equations. They will do nothing for your stress levels.
  • Write down everything you feel like you need to do and try and tick one thing off. Just the act of feeling like you are in control of your revision can help.
  • Watch a film, a TV show, play cricket or listen to some music that makes you feel good.
  • Drink some herbal tea or a hot chocolate. It’s a well known fact that hot drinks are known to soothe the soul (avoid too much caffeine though!).
  • A shower or a bath can help relieve stress.

During an exam

  • Students who panic in an exam should take deep breaths.
  • If a question causes them to freeze, then they should move on to an easier question. Come back to the difficult question later.

After an exam

  • Avoid the exam “post-mortem”. You don’t need to know how other people fared in the exam. You’ve done your best, you can’t go back and change your answers so the second you step out of the exam hall, focus on your next exam.

Always remember that scoring low marks or failing an exam is not the end of the world. Each time the going gets tough, I think of this quote I’d read long ago, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.’’

Exam phobia isn’t an uncommon feeling. Many students experience it throughout their academic life. They go through school and college fearing exams and as a result, suffer from lifelong anxiety when faced with challenging circumstances. The mere thought of exams gives them sleepless nights and days filled with anxiety and panic. 

Exam fear exists due to several reasons. Difficulty in studying, fear of certain subjects, expectations of parents and teachers, lack of confidence, and the inability to concentrate, all of which increase the incidence of anxiety and depression in students.

Take into consideration the amount of time you can sit in one place and concentrate without getting distracted. Set the timetable and study accordingly and you will notice your anxiety levels significantly lower.

3. Have a Plan Ready:

Chart a plan for preparing for your exams based on which subjects need more attention and which are the subjects you are thorough with. Create flashcards, flow charts, graphs, and pictures while revising, and then use these for last-minute revision before your exams.

So, you’re sick and all you want to do is curl up in bed and sleep, but you have a big exam or some midterms to study for. Don’t worry—it’s possible to revise for an exam and still get the rest you need to start feeling better! We’ve put together some tips to help you get through your study session while also taking care of yourself, so you feel healthy and prepared on test day.

Make a prioritized list of what you have to study.

Getting organized this way ensures you study what’s most important.

  • For example, say your college midterms are coming up. If you have an “A” in History 101 and a “C” in Geology 101 so far this semester, prioritize studying for your geology exam over studying for your history exam.
  • Or, if you only have to study for a History exam, write down a list of all the readings and assignments that are going to be on the test. Then, rank them with the topics you’re least familiar with at the top and the stuff you know best at the bottom.

Work in a clean, comfortable environment.

Studying when you’re sick is hard enough, so make yourself cozy, at least.

  • It’s totally okay, and even encouraged, to bundle up inside a blanket when you’re revising for an exam while sick!

Study materials that don’t strain your eyes or brain.

You don’t want to give yourself a headache or dry your eyes out.

  • For example, filling out a worksheet based on a chapter of reading from a book is a better choice than staring at a bunch of notes you took on your tablet and trying to memorize them.

Make flashcards and test yourself.

This is an active, engaging way to study when you’re ill.

  • You could also do a video call with a friend or group of friends studying for the same exam and test each other with flashcards, or just present some of the information to each other to help each other out.

Take breaks every 30 minutes.

It's important to pace yourself to avoid exhaustion when you’re ill.

  • You could also try working for 25 minutes, then taking a 5-minute break. Do this 4 times for a total of 2 hours, then take a longer break for 15 to 30 minutes.

Get up and move around.

A little movement can clear your head and maybe help decongest you.

  • If you’re feeling really tired and don’t want to move around much at all, you can at least crack open a window to get some fresh air.

Drink lots of fluids.

Staying hydrated is vital to fighting off a cold or flu.

  • Natural fruit juices like orange juice can also help hydrate you. Plus, orange juice and other fruit juices have vitamin C, which might help you fight off your sickness.

Eat light, comforting snacks and meals.

The right food helps get you through your studying without crashing.

  • Broth-based soups, like chicken noodle soup, are particularly soothing and light when you’re feeling under the weather.

Take the appropriate medication.

Medicine can help you get through your study session.

  • If you don’t have any medicine, visit your school’s doctor or nurse to get some or ask a local pharmacist for recommendations.

Don’t forget to rest and care for yourself.

You’re not going to get better if you don’t take care of yourself.

  • Also, definitely skip any non-essential extracurricular or social activities until you’re better. Save all your precious energy for studying, for now.

Ask for a deferred exam if you can’t study.

Sometimes, studying when you’re sick just feels impossible.

  • For example, some institutions might just require you to get a certified medical note from a doctor.
  • Other schools might not obligate you to go to the doctor’s office, in which case you might just have to fill out some paperwork to formally request a deferred exam.

Imagine falling asleep in one lecture session and waking up in the middle of the next lecture sitting. That would be a recipe for disaster during exam period. Students resort to extraordinary ways to excel in exams and suffer exam fever. You’ve heard of students who study standing. You know students who study sitting with their feet in cold water to wade off sleep in preparation for examination. There is hardly a student who doesn’t get panic attack during the period leading to exams. You can overcome exam fever by taking six steps.

Step One: Purpose

What do you want out of life?  Most students simply drift along with the crowd from one stage of academic level to the next. If you’re aware of the purpose for which you’re in school, college, university, you would make time and study well in advance in preparation for exams. You also need to know that each step in academic studies is a stepping stone towards achieving your goal in life .

Step Two: Plan

“No one plans to fail, many fail to plan,” you’ve heard it said. Your brain is capable of duplicating activities in the physical world; you plan in the invisible mind . Exam outcome mirrors your study plan. Have a study schedule in your plan of action which includes time frame for different subjects, short breaks, sufficient sleep and social life.

Step Three: Positive Mental Attitude

You sabotage your progress by placing roadblocks in academic studies .   All ideas good or bad are manufactured in the mind.  If your mind is preoccupied by failing in the exam that is the outcome you’ve programmed the mind to produce.  However, if positive mental attitude runs the length and breadth of your brain, success is assured. You’ve 100% unique brain power with unlimited potential to blast through the brick wall of exam. “What you can achieve is only limited by what you dream,” Richard Rutan said.

Step Four: Practice

You’re under false impression Mathematics is for genius students .  If so, you’ve put a lid over your ability to master mathematics subject. Scientific research has revealed that most people only use 5% of the brain power.  You can tap into the 95% underutilized brain potential through practice to shine in all subjects of study during exams.  “Practice makes you perfect.”  Nothing is achieved without work including passing exams with flying colors.

Step Five: Pay Attention to Details

You run the risk of overlooking details in the exam paper when you’re uptight before and during exams.  Learn to relax under exam pressure. You’ve revised your notes, and practiced with past exam papers. Focus on the task ahead by visualizing on positive outcome as you pay attention to details to stimulate your success steam.

Step Six: Pause to Reflect

You’ve taken the first five steps to overcome exam fever.  You need to pause and reflect on six specific exam considerations.

  • Read the instructions on exam papers carefully.
  • Write your name clearly on the answer sheet(s).
  • Mark questions you’re sure of as you skim through exam papers.
  • Start with questions you’ve confidence answering with ease.
  • Spend equal time on each question.
  • Go over your answers before handing in the exam paper.

Exam – The mere thought of this word sends a shiver down the spine. Am I right?  Exam fear starts with the announcement of the date and runs till the last day. And who would forget the previous day after our exams, when we felt like we have got wings to fly! What an ecstatic moment, as If there was nothing more other than completing our exams.  

The 19th-century businessman and American philanthropist Henry Fischel,  who discovered exams , must have not thought how this fear would have settled among students in the future.  

Has Class 10 exam fear gripped you? Chill. Exams help us evaluate our knowledge and understand how well we can apply whatever we have read to solve problems. Try to possess a proper and positive and proper attitude towards examinations which will help you stay calm.  

  There is enormous pressure on you from family, school, and well-wishers. Fear of disappointing others’ expectations, consequences of the results, and so many other exam thoughts creep into your mind. It is natural to get all these feelings. But you must keep all these aside and work hard without wasting time. Always remember this quote, “The man who wins is the one who thinks he can”.

  • Don’t compare them with other kids, instead motivate them.  
  • Don’t pressurize them for ranks and marks as they are already under too much pressure.
  • Be considerate and help them in all possible means by providing the required books and just pat them on their back every day.

Positive study approach  

With proper planning and strategy, you can overcome exam fear and succeed in any examination. Go through previous years’ question papers and take some break by listening to music or talking to friends. Get good sleep and also do some exercise daily to keep yourself fit and fine. All these habits will help in instilling a positive study approach. Let the thought of tests bring in lots of positivity, energy, and enthusiasm in you instead of fear, anxiety, and fever.

While being a troubling change in one’s health, fever is a mechanism that protects the human body. Fever can be characterized as a temporary increase in body temperature and serves as a defense response against infection. Although it may seem that fever worsens an individual’s condition, it is meant to fight for the person’s well-being. For instance, fever leads to a considerable loss in calories and dehydrates the system, but it also creates an environment within the body that is more uncomfortable for pathogens than for humans.

Fever helps the organism affected by an infection by causing trouble for microbes’ survival via high temperatures. An adult typically develops a fever when body temperature increases from approximately 99°F to about 99.5°F. A child exhibits a fever when their temperature is above 99.5°F when measured orally. A variety of microorganisms thrive within the body when it is at its normal temperature. However, it is harder for bacteria and viruses to survive at lower temperatures because an environment below 98.6°F provides good conditions for the replication and infection of cells. In addition, fever results in better activation of the immune system. For example, dendritic cells, neutrophils, and macrophages, which are considered the first respondents to illness, travel significantly faster to the infected area under higher temperatures. Moreover, fever can facilitate the generation and efficiency of T-cells that contribute to long-term immune responses, like antibody production. Therefore, while being considered a negative symptom, fever helps the human body fight infection in two ways. An increase in body temperature caused by fever makes it difficult for microbes to reproduce, while the immune system operates and defends better under a higher temperature.

Saudi Arabia’s 88-year-old King Salman has been diagnosed with a lung infection and will undergo treatment with antibiotics after falling ill with a fever and joint pain, state media reported early Monday.

King Salman underwent medical examinations at the Royal Clinics at Al Salam Palace in Jeddah, the Red Sea port city, the state-run Saudi Press Agency said.

“It was found that there was a lung infection, and the medical team decided that he — may God protect him — should undergo a treatment program consisting of antibiotics until the infection goes away,” the report said.

It did not elaborate.

In April, the monarch entered a hospital for medical checks and was later discharged.

Press Pause on the Silicon Valley Hype Machine

It’s a little hard to believe that just over a year ago, a group of leading researchers asked for a six-month pause in the development of larger systems of artificial intelligence, fearing that the systems would become too powerful. “Should we risk loss of control of our civilization?” they asked.

There was no pause. But now, a year later, the question isn’t really whether A.I. is too smart and will take over the world. It’s whether A.I. is too stupid and unreliable to be useful. Consider this week’s announcement from OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, who promised he would unveil “new stuff” that “ feels like magic to me.” But it was just a rather routine update that makes ChatGPT cheaper and faster .

It feels like another sign that A.I. is not even close to living up to its hype. In my eyes, it’s looking less like an all-powerful being and more like a bad intern whose work is so unreliable that it’s often easier to do the task yourself. That realization has real implications for the way we, our employers and our government should deal with Silicon Valley’s latest dazzling new, new thing. Acknowledging A.I.’s flaws could help us invest our resources more efficiently and also allow us to turn our attention toward more realistic solutions.

Others voice similar concerns. “I find my feelings about A.I. are actually pretty similar to my feelings about blockchains: They do a poor job of much of what people try to do with them, they can’t do the things their creators claim they one day might, and many of the things they are well suited to do may not be altogether that beneficial,” wrote Molly White, a cryptocurrency researcher and critic , in her newsletter last month.

Let’s look at the research.

In the past 10 years, A.I. has conquered many tasks that were previously unimaginable, such as successfully identifying images, writing complete coherent sentences and transcribing audio. A.I. enabled a singer who had lost his voice to release a new song using A.I. trained with clips from his old songs.

But some of A.I.’s greatest accomplishments seem inflated. Some of you may remember that the A.I. model ChatGPT-4 aced the uniform bar exam a year ago. Turns out that it scored in the 48th percentile, not the 90th, as claimed by OpenAI , according to a re-examination by the M.I.T. researcher Eric Martínez . Or what about Google’s claim that it used A.I. to discover more than two million new chemical compounds ? A re-examination by experimental materials chemists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, found “ scant evidence for compounds that fulfill the trifecta of novelty, credibility and utility .”

Meanwhile, researchers in many fields have found that A.I. often struggles to answer even simple questions, whether about the law , medicine or voter information . Researchers have even found that A.I. does not always improve the quality of computer programming , the task it is supposed to excel at.

I don’t think we’re in cryptocurrency territory, where the hype turned out to be a cover story for a number of illegal schemes that landed a few big names in prison . But it’s also pretty clear that we’re a long way from Mr. Altman’s promise that A.I. will become “ the most powerful technology humanity has yet invented .”

Take Devin, a recently released “ A.I. software engineer ” that was breathlessly touted by the tech press. A flesh-and-bones software developer named Carl Brown decided to take on Devin . A task that took the generative A.I.-powered agent over six hours took Mr. Brown just 36 minutes. Devin also executed poorly, running a slower, outdated programming language through a complicated process. “Right now the state of the art of generative A.I. is it just does a bad, complicated, convoluted job that just makes more work for everyone else,” Mr. Brown concluded in his YouTube video .

Cognition, Devin’s maker, responded by acknowledging that Devin did not complete the output requested and added that it was eager for more feedback so it can keep improving its product. Of course, A.I. companies are always promising that an actually useful version of their technology is just around the corner. “ GPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use again by a lot ,” Mr. Altman said recently while talking up GPT-5 at a recent event at Stanford University.

The reality is that A.I. models can often prepare a decent first draft. But I find that when I use A.I., I have to spend almost as much time correcting and revising its output as it would have taken me to do the work myself.

And consider for a moment the possibility that perhaps A.I. isn’t going to get that much better anytime soon. After all, the A.I. companies are running out of new data on which to train their models, and they are running out of energy to fuel their power-hungry A.I. machines . Meanwhile, authors and news organizations (including The New York Times ) are contesting the legality of having their data ingested into the A.I. models without their consent, which could end up forcing quality data to be withdrawn from the models.

Given these constraints, it seems just as likely to me that generative A.I. could end up like the Roomba, the mediocre vacuum robot that does a passable job when you are home alone but not if you are expecting guests.

Companies that can get by with Roomba-quality work will, of course, still try to replace workers. But in workplaces where quality matters — and where workforces such as screenwriters and nurses are unionized — A.I. may not make significant inroads.

And if the A.I. models are relegated to producing mediocre work, they may have to compete on price rather than quality, which is never good for profit margins. In that scenario, skeptics such as Jeremy Grantham, an investor known for correctly predicting market crashes, could be right that the A.I. investment bubble is very likely to deflate soon .

The biggest question raised by a future populated by unexceptional A.I., however, is existential. Should we as a society be investing tens of billions of dollars, our precious electricity that could be used toward moving away from fossil fuels, and a generation of the brightest math and science minds on incremental improvements in mediocre email writing?

We can’t abandon work on improving A.I. The technology, however middling, is here to stay, and people are going to use it. But we should reckon with the possibility that we are investing in an ideal future that may not materialize.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s 88-year-old King Salman has been diagnosed with a lung infection and will undergo treatment with antibiotics after falling ill with a fever and joint pain, state media reported early Monday.

King Salman underwent medical examinations at the Royal Clinics at Al Salam Palace in Jeddah, the Red Sea port city, the state-run Saudi Press Agency said.

“It was found that there was a lung infection, and the medical team decided that he — may God protect him — should undergo a treatment program consisting of antibiotics until the infection goes away,” the report said.

It did not elaborate.

In April, the monarch entered a hospital for medical checks and was later discharged.

Some Democrats and the corporate news media continue to underestimate the power of former President Donald Trump’s racist and anti-immigrant messaging. Tens of thousands of his supporters showed up at his rally in Wildwood, New Jersey over the weekend, the Associated Press reported. During Trump’s criminal trial in Manhattan, MSNBC hosts have repeatedly used the lack of the physical presence of pro-Trump demonstrators as evidence that our MAGA fever has broken. Wildwood indicates it’s still very much with us.

“When I return to the White House… We will shut down deadly sanctuary cities such as Newark and Philadelphia,” Trump told the massive crowd. “We will not let criminals come into those cities. And we will not let them release illegal criminal aliens into your streets.”

As  Max Pizarro  reported, Trump “brought his cruel, weird, hateful, indicted, egomaniacal, name-dropping TV personality brand to Wildwood, apparently trying to take advantage of perennial New Jersey dysfunction, while entertaining his own public delusion.”

Saturday’s rally with all of the red, white and blue trappings was reminiscent of that night on February 20, 1939, when 20,000 ‘patriotic’ Americans packed the old Madison Square Garden to cheer Fritz Julius Kuhn, leader of the American Bund, which supported Nazi Germany.

Of course, Trump attacked the press that were assembled to cover the rally and his adoring adherents took the prompt from their mind master and booed the assembled reporters. Like the convenor of a lynch mob, Trump’s dark power is fueled by an alchemy that makes people feel bigger and bolder unified in the hate that energizes and defines them.

There’s an instant gratification from it. No need for discernment or fact-checking. He’s right because he’s always right, which is why the politically correct establishment wants to deny him the chance to protect this country from the immigrant invasion being facilitated by Biden and the Democrats.

And here in the Garden State, thanks to the right-wing media juggernaut that’s composed of 101.5 FM, WABC 770 AM, the New York Post and Fox News many thousands of fans exist in that same parallel universe with Trump. They believe the 2020 election was stolen from the former president who says he would pardon the scores of Jan. 6 insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol waving the Confederate Star & Bars in hopes of disrupting the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

Unlike in the Civil War, when the Confederate members of Congress were prohibited by the 14 th  Amendment from being eligible for their seats when the war was over, the scores of Republican members who voted NOT to certify Biden’s 2020 victory after the violent attack continue to hold office, like Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., who chairs Trump’s New Jersey re-election bid. Their betrayal of the U.S. Constitution has been rewarded with committee chairmanships.

“We all love America. I love Cape May. I love New Jersey,” said Van Drew, reported  Pizarro .  “We see what’s happening today in a faltering economy. We’re here today because we’re tired of the open borders. There is nothing wrong with saying we believe in America first.”

America first. Hmmm. When did we last hear that catch phrase?

In the years since the attack on the U.S. Capitol former, Rudy Giuliani, the architect of so much calumny, found mass media sanctuary and a paycheck on WABC 770 Radio thanks to billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis. But the former mayor of New York was just one of the radio personalities in the WABC line-up that kept the Trump 2020 Big Lie and virulent anti-immigrant narrative alive.

The law and order former mayor is being criminally prosecuted in Georgia and Arizona for his role in the Trump fake electors conspiracy. Back in December, after a week-long federal civil trial, Giuliani was ordered to pay $148 million for defaming election workers Wandrea “Shaye” Moss and her mother Ruby Freeman. Giuliani, along with Trump,  falsely accused Moss and Freeman of tampering with the ballots they were counting at the State Farm Arena for the Fulton County Board of Elections. The election workers’ lives were completely upended by the Giuliani-Trump axis as the MAGA mob fixated on the two civically minded women.

On Friday, before Trump’s Wildwood rally, Catsimatidis pulled the plug on Giuliani’s radio show “after the station said he [Giuliani] violated its policy by trying to discuss discredited claims about the 2020 presidential election on air,” the  New York Times  reported.

“We’re not going to talk about fallacies of the November 2020 election,” Catsimatidis told the newspaper. “We warned him once. We warned him twice. And I get a text from him last night, and I get a text from him this morning that he refuses not to talk about it.”

What’s not clear from the reporting about Giuliani’s show being canceled is why now, after years of promoting Giuliani and his twisted worldview, WABC pulled the plug. Judging by the size of the crowd at Wildwood the damage has already been done.

Of course, he denounced the “Jewish-controlled press.”

“We, the German American Bund, organized as American citizens with American ideals and determined to protect ourselves, our homes, our wives and children against the slimy conspirators who would change this glorious republic into the inferno of a Bolshevik paradise,”  Kuhn  told the crowd.

Marshall Curry directed  “A Night At the Garden”,  the short documentary Academy Award film winner in 2017 that uses archival footing to depict the events of that night 85 years ago which grew a large crowd of counter-protestors outside the venue.  Documentary Magazine’s  Tom White asked Curry how audiences reacted to the provocative film.

“Most people are shocked. Very few Americans that I have talked to had any idea that the rally happened, and when they watch it, they have the same sense of revulsion at what was happening—and also a sense of familiarity,” Curry said. “We have seen hateful ideologies get wrapped up in the symbols of American patriotism a lot recently.”

Curry continued. “And we have seen an uptick in hate crimes and anti-Semitic crimes, and all of this stuff that should be ancient history for America doesn’t feel like ancient history. It feels familiar.”

As familiar as this weekend’s headlines.
