Creative writing prompts about animals.

Today’s post includes a selection of prompts from 1200 Creative Writing Prompts . Enjoy!

Animals have played a significant role in literature throughout history.

They appear in poems and stories, and plenty of nonfiction works have been written about animals and humans’ experiences with animals.

From E.B. White’s  Charlotte’s Web to Jane Goodall’s (aff links) books on primatology, authors and readers alike have delighted in writing and reading about animals.

And it’s no wonder. We humans have forged strong bonds with animals. Our pets are like family members. In fact, Americans spend billions a year on their animal companions. Billions more are donated to wildlife preservation, animal welfare advocacy, and conservation efforts.

Naturally, animals fit comfortably into the stories we tell. Today’s creative writing prompts pay homage to our animal friends by inspiring a writing session that features animals.

two puppies are seperated at birth. then reunited at the dog pound, when they are taken from their owners

Melissa Donovan

That’s a great one! Thanks, James.

CG

Why would an animal lover want to write about hunting?

Why wouldn’t they? There are animal lovers who hunt, and some animal lovers might have opinions about hunting that they want to express.

ProWriter

Animal lovers who hunt sort of doesn’t make sense because if they love animals, then why do they kill them?

I have known people who love their cats and dogs but go duck hunting. Most people who love animals also eat meat.

Margaret

These look cool! TOTALLY using one!!

17 Animal-Themed Writing Prompts For Kids

Children like writing about animals. Therefore, if you’re seeking the greatest writing prompts and plot ideas, an animal theme might be the best possible option.

For this purpose, we’ve gathered our favorite animal-themed writing prompts that will definitely spark some clever writing in your students or children. These prompts provide the perfect opportunity for kids to explore their imaginations and come up with some truly unique and entertaining tales.

Why Are Those Writing Prompts Useful?

We can’t deny that kids can be fascinated and captivated by an animal like few other things can. Therefore, child development professionals often recommend guiding kids to write about animals, as it can have several benefits beyond just developing writing skills.

In particular, according to professional essay writers from wr1ter.com , using specific prompts is a great way to provide a clear topic and direction for the writing. This can ultimately lead to improved writing skills and higher-quality writing.

Moreover, writing about animals can help kids learn more about the natural world and foster an appreciation for the environment and wildlife. It can also help children develop empathy and compassion towards animals, as they may need to put themselves in the animal’s shoes to write from its perspective.

One of the great things about writing prompts is that there is no right or wrong way to use them. Simply choose a prompt, provide a quick direction, and let your child’s imagination run wild. They can choose their favorite prompt and write as much as they like, or you can set a timer and challenge them to write a story within a certain time frame.

  • Most people prefer one kind of animal over others. Which animal is your favorite? Why do you like it so much?
  • Describe a bird, an insect, or an animal about which you feel strongly. Choose, for instance, a story that makes you laugh, cry, or think. Do enough research on the animal to be able to thoroughly describe it.
  • Think of yourself like a turtle swimming in the sea. What do you feel? What do you see around?
  • Pick an animal that is in danger or endangered. Write an essay summarizing the need to protect this species and what we can do to assist.
  • Write a narrative about a zookeeper’s typical day. What duties does a zookeeper carry out, and how does he or she take care of the creatures under his or her care?
  • You arrive home from school one day earlier than normal. And you are speechless Because your dog is typing on the computer rather than lying on his dog bed! What happens next?
  • You have to leave your pet with a friend while you are away on vacation. Make a list of the duties your buddy must perform in order to care for your pet.
  • Make up a tale about a mystical animal that has the power to fulfill wishes. What sort of wishes does this creature give, and what happens when humans utilize them?
  • Imagine finding yourself transformed into an animal when you woke up one day! What experiences would you have if you were an animal?
  • Pick a species of animal you are unfamiliar with. Do a little research and write a report about this animal based on your study, making sure to include details about its habitat, nutrition, and behavior.
  • Consider having any animal as a pet. What sort of adventures would you have with the animal of your choice?
  • You are a bug. Say what kind of insect you are, then describe a normal day. How do you handle any threats you come across?
  • You recently found a dog or kitten in your front yard alone. Explain in writing why you want to keep it and why your parents should let you have it in a letter to them. Include what would you do to care for it, as well as how you would make the money necessary for food and veterinary expenses.
  • Write a paper about an animal that you despise. Why are you not fond of it? Have you ever met that animal? Could you possibly come to enjoy it?
  • Elephants have long trunks, giraffes have long necks, and zebras have stripes. Write a narrative describing how one of these creatures came to have its peculiar attributes.
  • Think of the two distinct animal species. Combine the bodies of the two with the heads of both. What kind of animal do you have now? What intriguing things is he capable of?
  • You get to become a dog. Would you rather be a large dog like a German Shepherd , Labrador , or Golden Retriever ? Or would you rather be a terrier, a beagle, or a dachshund-cute, cuddly lap dog? What drove you to choose what you did?

Writing Prompt: Write About an Animal Encounter

by Sue Weems | 0 comments

Adding an animal to your story can reveal a lot about the humans who inhabit your world. Whether a beloved pet or a rogue turkey, adding an animal encounter to a scene is surprisingly humanizing.

Writing Prompt: Write About an Animal Encounter

Writing Prompt: Animal Encounter

First off, let me say that today’s post is not about dead dog stories. Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows are still etched as traumatic episodes in my childhood story history. If you love those stories and want to tell them, go for it. The goal of this writing prompt is to have fun and reveal character. See if you can write an animal encounter today.

When I was a kid, my family had dogs, cats, bunnies, gerbils and hamsters, parakeets, and other birds. My grandparents had an evil duck (no seriously, his name was Beelzebub) along with their assortment of dogs and stray cats, a parrot, and anything else that wandered into their yard.

As a result, many of our family stories involve animals. My Uncle Rod had a 4H cow he named Beef Jerky. There was the time I almost accidentally fed my best friend Heidi to my grandparents’ Great Dane Tiger Lily. Those stories have shaped who we are and how we view ourselves because an animal complicated or enhanced our lives. Here are some of the benefits of inviting an animal into your story.

Animals Add Conflict

When I was ten, I invited my best friend Heidi to meet the Great Dane Tiger Lily. Heidi did not like dogs. Tiger Lily did not like little girls she didn’t know.

After I led my friend into Tiger Lily’s yard, Heidi was only saved by some quick-thinking by one of my uncles who threw Heidi over the fence and out of reach. (Yes, she eventually forgave me.)

Everything in the encounter created conflict. My friend’s aversion, the dog’s unpredictability, my own stupidity. Adding an animal to a scene is a great way to create conflict.

Animals Add Personality

Animals are great for stories because they can have huge personalities of their own or they can draw out the personality of those they interact with. Think about your favorite stories with animals—from Curious George to Eddie the Dog from the sitcom Frasier . Animals can reflect their owners or they can be a contradiction that amplifies character.

An encounter with an animal in the wild can produce a range of responses from terror (hello, bear or mountain lion) to overreaction (hello, small skunk!). Think about what kind of animal would best fit with your character and scene to show off a personality.

Animals Humanize Your Characters

Blake Snyder’s screenwriting book Save the Cat is named after a scene beat designed to make the audience love a character. Snyder suggests that every story needs to have a moment of vulnerability for the character, whether it’s created through saving a stranded kitten or sticking up for an underdog.

A character who seems to be a terrible person might be humanized by caring (even if reluctantly) for her neighbor’s cat while he's in the hospital.

Find a way to set up an animal encounter that leaves the character vulnerable and the audience will swoon.

Add an Animal

Animals shift the tone of a scene or story, adding an element of unpredictability. Whether an animal becomes your character's loyal companion, viciously attacks, or simply wanders through a scene, adding an animal is a great way to shake things up. When's the last time you added an animal to your stories?

What are your favorite examples of animal encounters that enhanced a story or revealed character? Let us know in the comments .

For your writing prompt today, write a scene with an animal encounter. Will the encounter end well or poorly? Will your character like the animal or not? What conflict will the animal spark?

Choose any animal you like, or pick one of these to get started:

Write for fifteen minutes . When you're done, share your writing in the comments , and be sure to leave feedback for your fellow writers!

  • Imagine you are a spider spinning a web to catch prey. Write a poem about the intricate and unique design of your web.
  • Choose a fish and write a story about the physical characteristics that allow it to survive in deep ocean waters .
  • Research an animal with a unique form of communication (e.g. dancing bees, elephant calls) and write a report about how this behaviour has evolved.
  • Imagine you are a primate swinging through the trees using your opposable thumbs. Write a story about the physical characteristics that make you a successful tree-dweller.

Free Character Writing Prompts #14: Animals

Here are 10  character writing prompts  focused on furry, fun and talkative animals. One of the first books my mother ever read to me as a child was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which included many different talking animal characters. Many other childhood books I read included talking hippos, bears, birds and other animals with human characteristics. While it's easy to simply transpose a human character into animal form (giving you 990 choices aside from this section in this book alone), I thought that I would give you a few choices that tickled my fancy as far as animal characters were concerned. Combining a certain species with specific characteristics can work well thematically no matter what genre you're working on.

1. He was a rat through and through. Not only was he mean, spiteful and a slimy character, but he actually had the tail, ears and everything! He had a tough existence, trying to scavenge whatever trash he could find and bring it back to his family, but the fact that he was willing to lie and cheat to get it from the hands of others made him a bad egg to hang around with. Will this rat ever be able to reform his personality?

2. When Survivor wrote the song, "Eye of the Tiger," he took it literally. After all, his orange and black fur seemed to fit with what they were talking about, all he needed was a goal. The Jungle Heavyweight Championship fit the bill and he began cutting out of school early to train. He knew he'd be fighting bears and gorilla out there, but he figured by listening to the song all day, he'd have an advantage. What happens in the upcoming boxing tournament?

3. She loved flying through the air, which made it rough on her when her wing was damaged by a tree branch. She knew that she was an American symbol as an eagle, but only if she could fly majestically. She took up Eastern forms of healing like acupuncture with hopes of healing. She didn't believe in such nonsense, of course, but she was desperate to return to the skies. Will she learn something from her grounding?

4. She was extremely loving until you got on her bad side. Her brown fur kept her and her children warm when they huddled together during the winter, but if any of them ended up in trouble she was more than willing to bear down with her claws and teeth. The one she was angriest at was her husband, who had left them to fend for themselves years ago. Describe a situation in which she had to defend her cubs against the dangers of the outside world.

5. It can be a tough life sometimes when everyone views you as a disgusting, slimy bug. It turned out that this roach in particular had something of an identity crisis and was trying to distance himself from his brethren. He hoped that by making as many non-roach friends as possible, he might be able to move up in the world from one of the lowest of the low. What happens to him during his quest?

6. Living a life out in the middle of the ocean was a bit lonely sometimes, but there wasn't much choice out there for a cargo whale, now was there? He carried messages across the seas in his mouth from one coast to the other. He wondered silently why people didn't just send e-mail instead of keeping him away from his real passion, directing movies. Will he ever get out of his coast to coast shipping job and will he realize his dream?

7. In a world ruled by men, she was a bonobo chimpanzee, and ladies ruled the roost. Of all the fun-loving primates, she was the fairest of them all and enjoyed a life of luxury filled with gifts and simple pleasures. She had never known any sort of lack and as a result, she was a bit of a stuck up princess. Will her reign continue uninterrupted and what will happen when she loses some of her loving charm?

8. This green, prickly beast was completely indignant because she had been left off of Noah's Ark. She knew this must be some kind of mistake, because even though she had an appearance that was hardly appealing, she had many skills and knew she could make an impact in the new world. She knew her only chance to was to stow away onto the ark with her boyfriend. Is she successful in her journey and what are some of these special skills?

9. He loved eating more than anything else and one of the best sources for food he ever found was garbage. While people looked at him as the goat of his small village (after all, he was a goat), he was full of optimism about being able to make anything into a meal. While other villagers didn't want to be around him when he ate his strange concoctions, they loved his positivity when telling stories of his favorite meals. What was his favorite meal and what did he do with his time between eating sessions?

10. She was deadly; she was tropical; she was colorful; and she loved eating bugs with her long, sticky tongue. She and her family had been living in the rainforest for generations and had been feared from the beginning due to their poisonous exterior. Not only was her skin lethal, but she was also able to lure men into her traps using her figuratively poison tongue. What are some ways in which she's used her multiple survival techniques in the jungle?  Did you enjoy these character writing prompts?  Buy the full book of 1,000 Character Writing Prompts on Amazon!   Done with Writing Prompts about Animals? 8 Ways to Create AI-Proof Writing Prompts

C reating 100 percent AI-proof writing prompts can often be impossible but that doesn’t mean there aren’t strategies that can limit the efficacy of AI work. These techniques can also help ensure more of the writing submitted in your classroom is human-generated.

I started seeing a big uptick in AI-generated work submitted in my classes over the last year and that has continued. As a result, I’ve gotten much better at recognizing AI work , but I’ve also gotten better at creating writing prompts that are less AI-friendly.

Essentially, I like to use the public health Swiss cheese analogy when thinking about AI prevention: All these strategies on their own have holes but when you layer the cheese together, you create a barrier that’s hard to get through.

The eight strategies here may not prevent students from submitting AI work, but I find these can incentivize human writing and make sure that any work submitted via AI will not really meet the requirements of the assignment.

1. Writing AI-Proof Prompts: Put Your Prompt Into Popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Bard

Putting your writing prompt into an AI tools will give you an immediate idea of how most AI tools will handle your prompt. If the various AI chatbots do a good, or at least adequate, job immediately, it might be wise to tweak the prompt.

One of my classes asks students to write about a prized possession. When you put this prompt into an AI chatbot, it frequently returns an essay about a family member's finely crafted watch. Obviously, I now watch out for any essays about watches.

2. Forbid Cliché Use

Probably the quickest and easiest way to cut back on some AI use is to come down hard on cliché use in writing assignments. AI tools are essentially cliché machines, so banning these can prevent a lot of AI use.

Equally as important, this practice will help your students become better writers. As any good writer knows, clichés should be avoided like the plague.

3. Incorporate Recent Events

The free version of ChatGPT only has access to events up to 2022. While there are plugins to allow it to search the internet and other internet-capable AI tools, some students won’t get further than ChatGPT.

More importantly, in my experience, all AI tools struggle to incorporate recent events as effectively as historic ones. So connecting class material and assignments to events such as a recent State of Union speech or the Academy Awards will make any AI writing use less effective.

4. Require Quotes

AI tools can incorporate direct quotations but most are not very good at doing so. The quotes used tend to be very short and not as well-placed within essays.

Asking an AI tool for recent quotes also can be particularly problematic for today’s robot writers. For instance, I asked Microsoft's Copilot to summarize the recent Academy Awards using quotes, and specifically asked it to quote from Oppenheimer's director Christopher Nolan’s acceptance speech. It quoted something Nolan had previously said instead. Copilot also quoted from Wes Anderson’s acceptance speech, an obvious error since Anderson wasn’t at the awards .

5. Make Assignments Personal

Having students reflect on material in their own lives can be a good way to prevent AI writing. In-person teachers can get to know their students well enough to know when these types of personal details are fabricated.

I teach online but still find it easier to tell when a more personalized prompt was written by AI. For example, one student submitted a paper about how much she loved skateboarding that was so non-specific it screamed AI written. Another submitted a post about a pair of sneakers that was also clearly written by a "sole-less" AI (I could tell because of the clichés and other reasons).

6. Make Primary or Scholarly Sources Mandatory

Requiring sources that are not easily accessible on the internet can stop AI writing in its tracks. I like to have students find historic newspapers for certain assignments. The AI tools I am familiar with can’t incorporate these.

For instance, I asked Copilot to compare coverage of the first Academy Awards in the media to the most recent awards show and to include quotes from historic newspaper coverage. The comparison was not well done and there were no quotes from historical newspaper coverage.

AI tools also struggle to incorporate journal articles. Encouraging your students to include these types of sources ensures the work they produce is deeper than something that can be revealed by a quick Google search, which not only makes it harder for AI to write but also can raise the overall quality.

7. Require Interviews, Field Trips, Etc.

Building on primary and scholarly sources, you can have your students conduct interviews or go on field trips to historic sites, museums, etc.

AI is still, thankfully, incapable of engaging in these types of behavior. This requires too much work for every assignment but it is the most effective way to truly ensure your work is human- not computer-written.

If you’re still worried about AI use, you can even go a step further by asking your students to include photos of them with their interview subjects or from the field trips. Yes, AI art generators are getting better as well, but remember the Swiss cheese analogy? Every layer of prevention can help.

8. Have Students Write During Class

As I said to start, none of the methods discussed are foolproof. Many ways around these safeguards already exist and there will be more ways to bypass these in the future. So if you’re really, really worried about AI use you may want to choose what I call the “nuclear option.” If you teach in person you can require students to write essays in person.

This approach definitely works for preventing AI and is okay for short pieces, but for longer pieces, it has a lot of downsides. I would have trouble writing a long piece in this setting and imagine many students will as well. Additionally, this requirement could create an accusatory class atmosphere that is more focused on preventing AI use than actually teaching. It’s also not practical for online teaching.

That all being said, given how common AI writing has become in education, I understand why some teachers will turn to this method. Hopefully, suggestions 1-7 will work but if AI-generated papers are still out of hand in your classroom, this is a blunt-force method that can work temporarily.

Good luck and may your assignments be free of AI writing!
