International postgraduate tuition fees

Students who normally live outside the UK usually pay international tuition fees.

The tuition fee you pay is based on your fee status and the course you study. Your fee status is assessed using criteria set by the UK government.

Tuition fees for 2024–25 academic year

The cost of your fees depends on your course. Details of tuition fees are listed on each  course page .

Tuition fees are payable in each year of study. International tuition fees are subject to annual review and may increase annually throughout a student’s period of enrolment.

Tuition fee deposit

Self-funded international students who require a visa to study in the UK are required to pay a tuition fee deposit before the university will issue a Confirmation for Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number.

The deposit you pay will be based on the start date of your course.

Paying your fees

Students starting their course in january 2024 or september 2024.

If you are starting your course with us in January 2024 or September 2024 a deposit of £5,000 is required to be paid for the university to issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number.

You will need to pay your remaining tuition fees either in full at the start of your course, or in two instalments, by the deadlines below:

If you are starting your course with us in January 2024 the deadlines for the two instalments will be:

• 50% of fee by 28 February 2024
• Remaining balance to be paid by 31 May 2024.

If you are starting your course with us in September 2024 the deadlines for the two instalments will be:

• 50% of fee by end 31 October 2024
• Remaining balance to be paid by 31 January 2025.

Fully or partially officially sponsored international students

If a third party sponsor is paying your fees, you should provide their invoicing details via Student View . A scanned copy of a financial guarantee will be acceptable.

Sponsors should ensure that student fees are paid in full by 1 November of the relevant academic year, or within four weeks of the student’s course start date if this is later than 1 November.

As a student you remain ultimately responsible for the payment of your tuition fees, including where a sponsorship agreement has been approved (see the Student Contract ).

Deposit exemptions

You don't need to pay the tuition fee deposit if:

• you are fully sponsored by the UK government, your home government, the British Council or any international organisation, international company or university
• you are in receipt of the Norwegian Lånekassen funding
• you are in receipt of Swedish CSN funding
• you do not require Student visa sponsorship ie a CAS to study in the UK
• you hold a full scholarship such as a Chevening or University of Brighton full fee scholarship
• you are in receipt of a US Federal loan
• you are a progressing University of Brighton International College student
• you are a University of Brighton alumnus.

What is included in the fees

Mandatory requirements for your course are covered by the tuition fees. These include things such as health or criminal record checks, specialist materials and mandatory field trips.

Optional field trips, accommodation and course materials are not included in the tuition fees and you will need to pay for these yourself. Please contact the school that delivers your course about possible extra costs before you apply.

About the studentships, funding and eligibility

The University of Brighton is offering up to 20 fully-funded PhD studentships with a start date of October 2023.

Funding/stipend

Each studentship provides a tax-free stipend for living expenses at UKRI rates (£17,668 per year for full-time study and £8834 for part-time study in 2022-23) and covers tuition fees for the duration of the studentship (three years for full-time PhD study or six years for part-time study).

Residential eligibility

Applications from Home and non-UK resident students can be accepted.

If successful, students must live in the UK and within reasonable access to the University of Brighton.

Academic entry requirements

Applicants should have a minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree and desirably hold or expect to achieve excellent grades in a Master’s degree in a relevant subject from a UK university or comparable qualifications from another recognised university.

English language entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English and/or who are not resident in exempt countries must have successfully completed a Secure English language Test (SELT) in the last two years. Applicants who have obtained a UK degree in the last three years or who are currently studying for a UK degree may apply without a SELT. However, the university may request a SELT is taken as part of any award made. See  UK Government guidance for full details .

English language IELTS requirements vary across disciplines. Your potential supervisor will be able to advise on the requirements for their school.

Course summary

The School of Education offers two routes for those wanting to pursue doctoral level study in education, the Education PhD and the Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD).

Both doctoral routes aim to enable students to develop advanced research skills and to generate new knowledge:

the Education PhD enables students to develop advanced research skills and build new knowledge with an emphasis on providing a pathway for those interested in a career in education research.

for the Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD), a structured taught component is integral to the first stages of study and the emphasis is on the generation and application of advanced knowledge and skills pertinent to the issues within professional contexts.

We welcome applications through research proposals to study for an Education PhD at the University of Brighton, particularly across the broad themes that are supported through our Research and Enterprise Groups:

• Voice and Participation in Childhood and Education
• Narrative and Biographical Methodologies in Education
• Teaching, Learning and Professional Lives

As an Education PhD student, you will undertake applied research, combining theoretical analysis with fieldwork data collection to produce leading edge studies.

The research of our supervisory staff generates knowledge that advances social justice and fosters critical understanding of learning and teaching in diverse cultures and complex worlds.

Staff and PhD student research spans broad areas of education, including for example: investigating children and young people’s rights in UK and international contexts; researching the learning, development and working lives of educators in different educational settings; mentoring and coaching in education settings; and examining pedagogical practices in higher education.

We carry out innovative, creative and participatory research involving children, young people, adults and those who work with them. We also specialise in narrative and biographical methodologies and approaches and, as part of this, listen to educators’ and learners' stories and examine their life histories, to better understand their experiences and world views.

Our PhD students have gone on to a variety of different roles following the successful completion of their research. These include academic posts as lecturers and postdoctoral research assistants at Brighton and elsewhere. Many have gone on to management positions in related areas such as business consultancy.

The university offers its postgraduate students flexible study options to ensure that they can complete their studies around work and other obligations. Additionally, there are a range of financial support opportunities available to postgraduate students which include scholarships and bursaries.

There are more than 130 postgraduate courses to choose from at the University of Brighton. Lecturers at Brighton are highly qualified experts in their specialist fields who incorporate the latest subject-specific research developments into their teaching modules and research supervisions.

The university offers a range of flexible study options at postgraduate level, with both full or part-time study pathways on most courses. There are also opportunities to study individual masters-level modules.

Entry requirements for taught postgraduate courses at the University of Brighton vary on a course-by-course basis. Entry requirements are typically dependent on the level of study being undertaken and the course specific subject area. Prospective students are encouraged to consult individual courses pages for the specific entry requirements for each pathway of study.

For most postgraduate courses, students should make their applications directly to the university, but for select courses, applications are required to be made through UCAS or DfE for teacher training courses.

Prospective PhD students are required to submit a detailed research proposal as part of their application process. Research proposals can be made either in response to advertised research projects, or alternatively, students can propose personally developed research projects. For the latter, candidates should approach a member of staff from the university to be their research supervisor before submitting their application. This supervisor will subsequently help and support applicants with their research application.

English language requirements apply for any applicants who do not speak English as their first language. Previous academic achievement in English-taught courses or English language assessment certificates are typically required to be eligible for postgraduate courses at Brighton.

The majority of postgraduate students can expect their courses to include exchange opportunities with research partners, public services and other associations. A range of placements are built into courses to provide students with the opportunity to develop important professional connections and gain real-world work experience. The University of Brighton Students’ Union (SU) is a democratically run organisation, with elected student officers who oversee the union’s activities, campus life and community. The SU organises a huge range of events and activities throughout the year and students can gain invaluable experience by getting involved in SU student campaigns and volunteering opportunities.

The SU provides a regular and varied social programme, with more than 100 societies at Brighton for students to choose from. There are also 60 sports clubs currently active at the university.

Brighton is world-famous for its diversity and open-minded attitude, making it a brilliant place for students to call home. With its year-long calendar of festivals and events covering science, culture, music, and the arts there is always something to do. On their days off, students can spend hours exploring the eclectic range of shops, eateries, pubs, and bars down the world-famous Brighton lanes. The city’s nightlife, galleries, museums, and theatres are unrivalled across the length of the south coast. Brighton also has fantastic transport links, with a fast train into central London and local services to the surrounding Sussex countryside.

Accommodation

Postgraduate students at the University of Brighton have a range of accommodation options to choose from while they complete their studies. There are halls of residences at four locations across the city. Prices range between £156 to £227 per week, and certain accommodation options also offer breakfast and evening meals during term times.

The university’s accommodation team has great local knowledge and are always on hand to help postgraduate students find suitable accommodation in the private sector.

In recent years, the University of Brighton has invested more than £100 million in new facilities and specialist equipment. The university has recently completed a £27 million development of new halls of residences and support facilities at its Varley Park campus. Brighton has also invested in a range of industry-standard modern learning facilities designed to help students develop transferable professional skills across all its departments.

Specialist facilities at Brighton include an advanced engineering building, flight simulators, and several human movement labs. There are a range of studios, exhibition spaces and workshops for students on architecture, design, fine art, fashion, textiles, photography, and media courses, all equipped with modern equipment. 

The University of Brighton offers a range of student support services to its students in order to help them with any problems they may face while completing their studies.

Mental health and wellbeing are a priority at Brighton, and day-to-day support services include specialist student advisers, support and guidance tutors, confidential support for emotional issues, accommodation support, finance support, and a health services team.

Togetherall is the university’s 24/7 online mental health support service, providing a safe confidential online community with tools to help students cope and connect with other students. Brighton also offers focused support for LGBTQ+ students, as well as learning support coordinators specialising in disability and dyslexia support. Additionally, there are a range of accessible study skills workshops to complement standard academic supervision.

The careers team at Brighton offers a range of career planning support services, including CV writing and interview workshops. There are also career fairs run throughout the year, as well as and a strong entrepreneurial support network which helps students develop new business ideas.

The fees below are for courses beginning in the academic year 2024-25. 

Fees listed are per course; if you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

EU nationals starting new postgraduate courses will now pay international fees and will not be eligible for student funding from the UK government. However, there are exceptions to this for Irish nationals and EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme. What's included in the fee?

When costs such as health or criminal record checks, field trips or use of specialist materials are incurred as a mandatory requirement of the course they are included in your tuition fee.

You may incur additional costs depending on the optional modules or activities you choose. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. Before you apply please check with the school that provides your course using the contact details on the left of this page for advice about what is included and what optional costs you could face so you can budget accordingly.

20% discount on postgraduate fees for bsms undergraduate alumni.

Our BSMS Alumni Postgraduate Scholarships are open for 2024-25 entry.

BSMS Undergraduate Alumni will be eligible for a 20% discount on fees, which will be automatically awarded to students who meet the eligibility criteria. Both full-time and part-time students are eligible, and the scholarship applies to Postgraduate Taught courses along with Postgraduate Research. If you are interested in studying an eligible course, but are yet to apply, please submit your application online in the normal way. If you are offered a place, we will automatically identify you as eligible.

University of Brighton Campus

• The University of Brighton has four campuses - one campus in Eastbourne and the other three campuses in Brighton.
• The four campuses are City Campus, Moulsecoomb Campus, Falmer Campus and the Eastbourne campus.
• The City campus is located at the heart of the city of Brighton and is home of the university’s arts and humanities departments. The city campus also has top of the art design archives and studio space to nurture a creative environment and facilitate learning.
• The Moulsecoomb campus is the university’s largest campus hosting more than 8,000 students. This campus offers programs in the fields of engineering, business, architecture, geography, life sciences, pharmacy, tourism, media, math, computing and law.
• The Falmer campus is four miles away from the city center and offers programs in nursing, education, communication and social sciences. The campus also has newly added psychology laboratories, excellent sports facilities and good transport links to the rest of the city.
• The Eastbourne campus is a beachside campus. It offers programs in hospitality, physiotherapy, journalism, sport sciences and physical education. The important attributes of the Eastbourne campus are the artificial outdoor pitch, a dance studio, a newsroom and a swimming pool.
• Brighton also hosts England's biggest arts festival every year. The Sallis Benney theatre hosts a lot of on campus events during the festival and the entire year.

University of Brighton Residence

• University of Brighton assures accommodation to every eligible student, who enrolls in a full-time course of study through its 26 halls and homes.
• All University residence halls are self-catered, but a meal and drink plan can be chosen if required.
• The University offers three main types of housing - the university halls, shared homes and private rental homes.
• Apart from the university halls of residence, students can also choose to stay in shared homes called unihomes and unilets.
• There is also a homestay option available only in the Brighton area, which is a popular option for international students and students who stay for a few weeks.
• Students will need to pay their first two week rent instalment before their arrival.
• The rent varies across different halls based on the contract length, insurance cover availability, utility bills, and availability of a 24 hours residential staff and other amenities.
• For students who choose to live off campus, the University helps find suitable accommodation and the students are eligible for discounted public transport in Brighton, Chichester, Worthing and Eastbourne.

Undergraduate applicants can apply through the UCAS application which gives them the option to apply for multiple programs and universities at the same time and manage applications. University of Brighton Cost of Attendance

• International students who have received a letter of acceptance will need to pay a tuition fee deposit of 1,500 GBP before the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number, which is required to make a visa application.
• The tuition fee deposit can be paid by the students online or through a bank transfer service partnered with western union, so international students can pay their deposit in their local currency.

• University of Brighton has introduced scholarships for international students for those students who are enrolled in any undergraduate or postgraduate program.

Brighton through a lens

• I loved the course structure and the professors who are teaching the course. I also loved the fact that Brighton is such a creative and cultural city with a very positive environment.
• My course, professors, and the city. The people I met and the experiences I gained in terms of volunteering opportunities that really added to my CV.
• How short the course goes by. Also, the placement team can do a much better job when it comes to providing help for courses apart from business and engineering.

Full-time study

For full-time study, you will pay a total of three or four full-time annual fees (as appropriate) for the period of prescribed study under supervision.

Part-time study

For part-time study, you will pay a total of  six or eight part-time annual fees (as appropriate) for the period of prescribed study under supervision. 

Part-time tuition fees are 50% of the full-time fee applicable for the programme of study in each academic session.

A PhD in Sweden is an opportunity to study in a country that combines a historic higher education system with a culture of ingenuity and invention. The country’s universities date back to the fifteenth century, whilst Swedish brands and technologies such as Spotify, IKEA and Bluetooth continue to shape the modern world.

This covers what you need to know about PhD study in Sweden , including information on applications, funding opportunities and doctoral fees (spoiler: there aren’t any).

PhD opportunities in Sweden – what’s on offer for 2024?

If the goal for your doctorate is to produce original and potentially innovative work (it should be) then a PhD in Sweden may well be the ideal choice.

Like its Scandinavian neighbours, Sweden is also a highly tolerant country, with progressive and inclusive laws that support LGBT rights and welcome international students and visitors.

Here's some reasons to consider a PhD in Sweden for international students:

• Creativity and originality – You may not discover the next big music streaming solution (and even a PhD may not help you understand *that step* in those IKEA instructions) but your doctoral research will be right at home in a country that celebrates free-thinking and supports new ideas
• Prize-winning research - Sweden's status as the home of the Nobel Prize (with 34 winners) reflects its proud history of recognising and rewarding research, excellence and innovation
• No PhD fees – Swedish PhD programmes normally charge no tuition fees to their students (regardless of nationality)
• Historic (and respected) universities – Higher education in Sweden dates back to the 1400s and the country’s universities are well placed in modern rankings, with particular specialisms in Medicine, Life Sciences and related subjects

We’ve studiously avoided making any ABBA references in this section, but if you want a university to take a chance on your research proposal and eventually give you, give you, give you a PhD without charging much money, money, money for fees*. . . well, there are worse destinations to choose than Sweden.

Swedish universities

There are 39 state-funded universities and equivalent institutions in Sweden, alongside a smaller number of privately funded higher education providers.

Degrees are organised using a three-cycle system , in common with the wider European Higher Education Area . Your PhD in Sweden will be a third-cycle qualification , usually taking place after Bachelors (first cycle) and Masters (second cycle) study.

Universities and university colleges

Higher education providers in Sweden are divided into two types:

• Universities ( universitet ) are large institutions awarding degrees in a broad range of subjects. They carry out original research alongside academic teaching and therefore have the capacity to support and train PhD students.
• University colleges ( högskola ) focus on technical and professional training, often in applied sciences and related subjects. They are less likely to award PhDs but may do so in certain subject areas.

The distinction between these two categories isn’t always obvious or clear from an institution’s name (university colleges may simply refer to themselves as universities). The good news is that you don’t need to worry too much about it. As a PhD student you’re likely to end up studying at a university, but the smaller number of doctoral programmes offered by university colleges are equally rigorous and respected.

Swedish university rankings

Sweden is home to one of Europe’s top-performing higher education systems, at least so far as university rankings are concerned. Of the 38 universities in Sweden, 10 rank within the current Times Higher Education world top 400.

University rankings can help you choose a PhD project or programme, provided you know what to look at. Our guide explains how to use rankings as a prospective postgraduate.

PhD structure

A PhD in Sweden represents the highest level of academic achievement for students. As in other countries, the emphasis is on your independent research towards an original thesis that makes a new contribution to knowledge in your field.

Swedish doctoral degrees

Doctoral level study in Sweden takes one of two forms:

A standard PhD in Sweden requires a minimum of four years full-time work (equivalent to 240 ECTS credits ) and awards a full doctorate (along with the all-important title of ‘doctor’).

Alternatively, you may choose to study for a shorter licentiate degree. This generally only requires two years of full-time work towards a shorter and less ambitious thesis (equivalent to 120 ECTS credits ). The Swedish licentiate is similar to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) offered in the UK or other countries and some students initially enrol for this qualification before upgrading to become full PhD candidates.

The academic year in Sweden runs from August to June with two teaching terms (August to January and January to June) separated by summer and winter holidays. As a PhD student you’ll normally work more flexibly throughout the year, but some additional courses and other activities may be linked to specific teaching periods.

Supervision

You’ll complete your PhD (or licentiate) with the support of two or more expert supervisors whose job it will be to guide your work. Their roles will vary slightly depending on your field:

• Supervisors for Arts , Humanities and some Social Science projects will serve primarily as mentors. They won’t be directly involved in your research, but they will be able to advise on the direction your project is taking.
• Supervisors for Science , Technology , Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) projects may also be carrying out similar research as the lead or principal investigator for the laboratory or research group your PhD is part of. This means they may also work alongside you or even collaborate on some experiments. However, your PhD thesis will still be an independent piece of work, based on your personal findings and analysis.

You’ll always have at least two PhD supervisors, one of whom will be the principal supervisor for your PhD. Some universities also appoint additional assistant supervisors with responsibility for specific tasks (such as training or pastoral care and support).

Your supervisors’ roles and expectations will be set by your university. As a minimum they’ll usually include arranging regular progress meetings, reviewing results and drafts and supporting you as you prepare to submit your thesis. Some additional responsibilities might include identifying and fulfilling training needs or assisting with other aspects of your professional and academic development.

Programme structure

Your main focus during a PhD in Sweden will be the original research required for your thesis. You’ll normally begin by assessing the scholarship in your subject (a literature review) before moving on to collecting sources or experimental data and eventually writing up your conclusions and results.

Some universities also offer more structured training alongside your research. This may involve attending short courses and / or attending short courses on research methods and other useful skills for your project.

It’s also common for PhD students at Swedish universities to serve as junior academic staff within their departments or faculties as part of their funding arrangements. If so, you’ll also have additional duties such as teaching or demonstrating.

The assessment of a Swedish PhD is based on the quality of the doctoral thesis you submit at the end of your research. This needs to demonstrate that your work has been original, that it has made a significant contribution to your subject and that you have personally been responsible for designing and carrying out the research involved.

All of these qualities will be formally assessed during a final public defence of your thesis.

This is similar to the viva voce used in the UK and other countries but follows a slightly different procedure. Instead of being examined in private, you will present your thesis to an examining committee in front of an audience that may include other academics, fellow PhD students and your family and friends.

One of the committee will be an external expert (from outside your university) appointed to serve as your ‘opponent’. They will ask questions about your thesis and challenge you to explain your findings and conclusions. Other members of the committee (and audience) may also ask questions.

At the end of the examination your committee will decide whether or not you have successfully defended your thesis and can be awarded your PhD. This ‘live’ examination process may seem daunting, but you should think of it as an appropriate climax for your research, allowing you to assert your expertise and prove your qualification. It’s also quite rare for students to fail at this stage.

Fees and funding

There are no fees for PhD study in Sweden at state-funded universities (note that this doesn’t apply to Masters or Bachelors degrees). Doctoral programmes are free for EU, EEA and international (non EU) students.

The same applies to application fees – you don’t need to pay these for a PhD in Sweden.

You will need to cover your accommodation and living costs, but support may be available from your university to help with this.

Study grants

It’s common for PhD students in Sweden to also be recognised as staff, subject to an employment contract with their university. If applicable, this pays you to a salary known as a study grant ( utbildningsbidrag ) worth approximately €1,500 per month (but subject to tax).

Your employment status may vary during your PhD. For the first two years you will receive your study grant, but not be entitled to benefits and social security. For the final two years you will normally hold a full employment contract ( anställning ) and be entitled to support during illness, parental leave or other circumstances. In return for your study grant you will normally be required to carry out some responsibilities within your department, such as teaching undergraduates or assisting with administrative work.

PhD funding

Other scholarships and bursaries for PhD study in Sweden may also be available to help top up (or substitute for) a study grant.

The main source of PhD funding for international students in Sweden is the Swedish Institute (SI). They offer scholarships for students from specific regions including Turkey, the Balkans and the Baltic. More information is available on the official Study in Sweden website.

Applying for a PhD in Sweden

You should apply directly to universities for PhD study in Sweden. How you do so will depend on the kind of project you are interested in:

• PhDs in Science , Technology , Engineering and Mathematics will often be advertised as specific projects. You should view current opportunities and apply according to the guidelines set by specific adverts. This will often mean submitting a personal statement along with your academic CV and references .
• Students in Arts , Humanities and Social Sciences are more likely to put forward their own project ideas. You’ll need to submit a strong research proposal , perhaps after contacting a potential supervisor for guidance and advice.

However you apply, make sure you check the specific requirements and procedure with your university.

Admissions requirements

Swedish universities are free to set their own entry requirements for PhD study . The minimum qualification will usually be a Bachelors degree in an appropriate subject, but a Masters is also desirable – particularly if you’re applying for funding.

Just as important as your previous qualifications will be your ability to demonstrate previous research experience . This could simply be the dissertation project for one or both of your previous degrees, but it’s important that you can show some preparation for the independent research you’ll be doing on your PhD.

The general eligibility criteria for PhD applications in Sweden is similar to most other countries in the EU.

Language requirements

A large proportion of teaching at Swedish universities takes place in English. This means you won’t necessarily need to know Swedish to study abroad in Sweden, but it’s worth checking with the specific university or department you plan to study within. Even if English isn’t required, picking up some language skills will help you settle in and enjoy your degree.

If English isn’t your first language you may need to submit a recognised test score . Exceptions might be made if you’ve completed a previous university degree taught in English.

Your university may invite you for an interview as part of the admissions process (in person, or online). This is a good sign! It means your application is suitably interesting and impressive and the university wants to hear more from you.

Student visas

UK students will no longer be EU citizens from the 2021-22 academic year onwards. This means you may be considered as an international student when studying in Sweden. You may be subject to different visa requirements and fee rates, unless otherwise stated.

You won’t need a visa to study in Sweden as a PhD student (student visas are required for visits of less than three months, but your PhD is guaranteed to take longer than this!).

EU, EEA and Nordic students

If you’re a citizen of an EU, EEA or Nordic country (a group that includes Finland, Denmark, Iceland and Norway as well as Sweden) you won’t need a residence permit to live in Sweden during your PhD. However, you will need to register with a local branch of the Swedish Tax Agency ( Skatteverket ).

You’ll need to bring your passport plus any marriage or birth certificates (if you are married and / or have children). You’ll also need to bring proof of admission to a Swedish university and a signed declaration that you have sufficient funds to live on during your PhD (the minimum requirement is €826 per month ).

Other international students

Students from countries outside the EU, EEA and Nordic group must formally apply for a residence permit in order to study in Sweden for longer than three months.

You can do this online. You’ll need to provide copies of your passport, along with proof that you have been admitted to a Swedish university, have paid the first instalment of your tuition fees and can support yourself financially during your PhD the minimum requirement is €826 per month ).

Health insurance

All students in Sweden will need full health insurance. If you already hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you will normally be automatically covered. Alternatively, your university may provide cover as part of your study grant, or offer an affordable policy for you to purchase.

Can I work in Sweden after my PhD?

EU, EEA and Nordic students can live and work in Sweden without restriction. Other international students will need to apply for a post-study residence permit , allowing you to stay in Sweden for another six months as you look for work. To obtain this you’ll need to have completed your degree, still be in Sweden and hold a valid passport.
