‘Nation First, Always First’ theme for Independence Day celebrations

‘Nation First, Always First’ will be the theme of India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on Sunday.

All the Olympians who won medals at the 2020 Tokyo Games have been sent special invites for the event.

Like 2020, this year’s event will be restricted for the public and no cultural performance will be staged by children. A group of NCC cadets will attend the event, said an officer. From paintings to floral arrangements, all aspects of the programme will bear ‘Nation First, Always First’ theme, said Delhi police sources.

Drone alert

After the recent drone attacks in Jammu, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the Delhi police to strictly adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures for drone operations.

“We have increased the total number of secured rooftops from which the Red Fort or the potential route of the Prime Minister’s cavalcade is remotely visible. Personnel have been told to take down drones or aerial objects in case they see one approaching the Red Fort or to alert higher-ups if they don’t have the requisite skills,” said a police officer.

A makeshift wall of containers has been erected at the periphery of the Red Fort to rule out any security breach owing to the ongoing farmers’ protest. The containers have been painted in hues reflecting the solemnity of the august occasion.

Independence Day 2021 theme: The theme of India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations will be ‘Nation First, Always First’. The country will celebrate its 75th year of Independence at Red Fort from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on August 15, 2021.

All the athletes who won medals at Tokyo Olympics 2020 have also been sent special invites to attend Independence Day 2021.

Like Independence Day was celebrated in 2020, this year’s celebrations will also be restricted to the public and no cultural performances and events will be staged by the children. As per an officer, a group of NCC Cadets will be attending the event.

Precautions during Independence Day 2021 celebrations:

•  The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, after the recent drone attacks in Jammu, has asked the Delhi Police to strictly follow the Standard Operating Procedures for drone operations.

•  A Police Officer while talking about the Independence Day celebrations informed that the police have increased the total number of secured rooftops from which the Red Fort or the potential route to PM’s cavalcade is remotely visible.

•  Personnel have also been directed to take down the drones or the aerial objects in case anyone sees one approaching the Red Fort.

New Delhi: India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence, and the theme for this year's celebrations is 'Nation First, Always First'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation from the ramparts of Delhi's Red Fort on Sunday.

Special invitations have been sent to all the sportspersons who won medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games to attend the ceremony.

Since the celebrations are taking take place amid the pandemic, the entry of people to the event has been restricted further and children will not be presenting any kind of cultural performance.

India has won a total of seven medals, including one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals, in the Olympic Games 2020. The Indian players created history on several occasions during the games. Neeraj Chopra won the first track and field gold medal for the country in javelin throw, while the Indian men's hockey team won a medal after 41 years. 

Several people attend the flag hoisting ceremony and take part in the celebrations at the Red Fort where the PM unfurls the Tricolour. This year's programme will include a group of NCC cadets. According to reports, the theme, 'Nation First, Always First', will reflect on all aspects of the programme — from paintings to flower arrangements.

Drone alert

Following the recent drone attacks in Jammu, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the Delhi Police to strictly follow the standard operating procedure for drone operations. The security has been stepped up to secure rooftops that show the possible route of the Red Fort or the Prime Minister's convoy from a distance. Policemen have been told to shoot down drones or aerial objects if they see them near the Red Fort. In case of failure to do so, officials have been asked to alert the higher authorities.

Temporary wall made of containers

A temporary wall of containers has been erected around the perimeter of the Red Fort to avoid any security breach. This has been done especially keeping in mind the ongoing farmers' protests as the authorities don't want to allow a repeat of what happened on 26th January this year when farmers protesting had stormed the Red Fort complex, breaking through police barricades.

This year, the theme for Independence Day is "Nation First, Always First". All Independence Day programmes and events will be based on this theme.

Independence Day 2023 History and Significance:

Led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Independence movement began with World War I. On July 4, 1947, the Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons and was passed within a fortnight. On August 15, 1947, India marked its Independence as the 200-year-old British rule came to an end. Many leaders played a prominent role in the Indian freedom struggle, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose, and many more.

Independence Day is a reminder of the many sacrifices and struggles made by the Indian freedom fighters to help the country achieve its freedom from the British Raj and why we should honour this Independence. The day also invokes feelings of patriotism for the nation and the willingness to serve the country and lead it to prosperity. It also creates a sense of unity and duty among citizens.

Independence Day 2023 Celebrations:

Independence Day is marked as a national holiday in India. Every year, the Prime Minister hoists the National Flag at Delhi's Red Fort and addresses the nation, followed by a military parade. On August 15, 1947, the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of Red Fort in Delhi. Every Prime Minister has followed that tradition ever since.

East India Company came to Surat, India in 1608 with a motive of exporting spices, tea and exotic items from India to Europe. After getting permission from Mughal Emperor Jahangir, they started establishing their factories in the Mughal Empire. Soon after it, they established their trade in other parts of India. They started meddling in political affairs of India after getting greedy of Indian resources because India was one of the biggest industries of spices, jewels and textiles.

By winning the battle of Plassey in 1757, the battle of Buxar in 1764, and other following battles with the help its own armies, the East India Company gained control over almost all Indian kingdoms. When its soldiers revolted in 1857, the British Crown rule was established in India in 1858 resulting in direct British rule until the end of its reign in year 1947. Ironically, the company which once looted and ruled India is now owned by an Indian entrepreneur, Sanjeev Mehta!

Salute to those freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for their nation. They did not see any religion, caste or race. What they saw was their “Bharat”, clenched in the shackles of slavery. From young to old, everyone started participating in the movements to bring the morning of freedom in their country. 

India’s first freedom fighter was Mangal Pandey who refused to use animal grease in cartridges when he was in the army of East India Company. His death in the hands of English police caused a huge rebellion and various protests against the British in 1857.

Bhagat Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Rajguru and Sukhdev became the inspiration for the youth, by sacrificing their lives for their motherland. The bravest queen, Rani Laxmi Bai, along with her army of brave women soldiers, fought against her territory’s invaders until her last breath while holding her baby on her back.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Subhash Chandra Boss and Mahatma Gandhi played a key role by raising their voices against the exploitation done by the British. One of the famous movements for freedom is the Satyagraha movement which Mahatma Gandhi led. This movement is known as non-violent protest. It was first initiated by Gandhi Ji in South-Africa against the racial discrimination done on Indian immigrants. When he came back to India, he also led this movement to combat the atrocities committed on the tenant farmers by the British Colonial Government in 1917. This movement included boycotts, keeping fast and walking long miles in silent marches. After that, Mahatma Gandhi kept initiating these movements in different parts of the nation until the year of independence. Quit India movement and Dandi March are also the famous movements led during the earlier years of twentieth century.

To remember the heroism of freedom fighters and to celebrate the independence which our country waited for many years, 15 th August has been declared a national holiday. Many events, such as cultural fests by different states, parades and stunts by Indian armies and other sports take place on this day. The central place of this celebration is Delhi’s Red Fort where the Indian Prime Minister raises the Indian National Flag. Many people join this event and many witness it on their television screens at their homes. In a few hours, India will enter the 75th year of Independence since the British decided to leave the country once and for all on August 15, 1947. Indeed, on the eve of the 75th Indian Independence Day, every single Indian soul is proudly preparing to embrace the sacrifices made by great leaders of this nation to make this a free country.

In the essence of the uncountable lives sacrificed in the Indian Freedom Struggle, this year, the theme of Independence Day is “Nation First, Always First”. Indeed, this year’s theme has been aptly chosen to honour the sacrifices made by the patriots who laid down their lives selflessly for many generations to come. This country has given birth to fearless sons like Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Chandra Sekhar Azad and daughters like Sarojini Naidu and Matangini Hazra among others.

History bears witness, that on August 15, 1947, after India has transitioned into a free nation and Jawaharlal Nehru, the debut Prime Minister of free India unfurled the Indian National Flag on the ramparts of Red Fort in the capital, the tradition has been carried forward to this day. The current Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the tricolour tomorrow at Red Fort at around 07.00 AM in the morning.

The Prime Minister will address the nation with his speech scheduled to commence at around 07.30 AM after the Indian Flag has been hoisted tomorrow. Due to COVID-19, the ceremony will be observed under limited attendance. However, the entire nation will be able to hear out the leader of the nation on television and internet media.

Public broadcaster Doordarshan and Press Information Bureau will be broadcasting the events from 06.30 AM onward on television and on the YouTube channel of PIB. Besides, as per reports, the events will also be broadcasted through PIB’s official Twitter handle. Citizens will also be able to watch the broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and get live updates on the PMO’s official Twitter to handle.

Although this year, the events will not be physically open for the common public, the Indian contingent who have represented India in the Tokyo Olympics this year has been invited to attend the ceremony at Red Fort. Besides, the President also invited the Indian players to high tea on August 14, 2021.

India’s independence, which came in 1947, was an important day in the history of the country. Since then, the country has accomplished a lot. People from all over the world are in awe of the progress that the country has made in the last 74 years. However, the journey has not been easy. It has been filled with a lot of struggle, hard work, and sacrifice. We have been through a lot, and the country has been through a lot. The theme of India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations will be ‘Nation First, Always First’. The country will celebrate its 75th year of Independence at Red Fort from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on August 15, 2021.

The theme of India’s 75th Independence Day celebration is apt for two reasons. One, we live in times that are filled with political and social discord. Two, we have seen how politicians have focussed more on their interests rather than that of the nation. This theme is apt because it is a reminder to us to always put the interest of the nation before our own.

Nation First, Always First means that we should be patriotic and not get swayed away by external forces who always try and disintegrate our nation. India is a diverse nation. It is made up of a variety of people with different languages, different cultures, different religions, and shows diversity in many ways. But we are all Indians at the end of the day. We are all part of the same whole. All Indians have the same set of values irrespective of the color of their skin, they all have the same respect for the country and its culture and they all want to see India progress and prosper.

Although India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, it is a very young nation – a fact that we are reminded of every August 15. We are the world’s largest democracy and most diverse country. The diversity of our country is not just in numbers, but also in every aspect of our lives – from the architecture of our homes, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, our music, our literature, the movies we watch, the sports we play, the games we play and the languages we speak.

On August 15, 1947, India became an independent nation. The importance of the day is that it was on this day India became an independent nation. It was on this day that we, as a country, became free from the clutches of the British Raj. The day is a day to remember the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom and sacrificed their lives for our independence. It is a day to remember those who put the nation always first.

We all know that India is a diverse country with many communities and languages. However, the fact that we were able to work together to fight for freedom and gain independence is something that binds us. We celebrate that unity every year on Independence Day. However, this year it is important to remember that following the current political climate, we should be aware of the threats that may try to pull us apart. It is very important that we remain united and not get swayed away by external forces who always try and talk us into believing that we are not one nation.

India is an ancient nation but it is also a new nation. We have to be more disciplined in what we do. We have to show those who are trying to break us into pieces that we are one and we will never give up that which we are. This is not an easy task but one that we have to fight for always and forever. When in dilemma, remember, "Nation First, Always First!".

The nation should always be first for us. We should never let individualism come in the way of the greater good of the nation at large. We should never let our personal interests come at the cost of the nation. This is the call of the hour and we should all pitch in and work towards the betterment of the nation. We should never let divisive forces come in the way of India’s progress. We should all be responsible citizens and ensure that we do not make decisions that would negatively impact the nation as a whole. No one is greater than the nation, and we should always strive to unite the nation.

India is celebrating its 78th Independence Day this year. On August 15, 1947, the South Asian country gained freedom from the British colonial rule. Every year, the day is marked by the hoisting of the tricolour and remembering the sacrifices of our freedom fighters who won independence for India.

While the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort, chief ministers do the same in their respective states. However, did you know the CMs got the right to hoist the national flag on I-Day only in 1974 due to the late Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) veteran M Karunanidhi?

Let’s turn the pages of history to know more.

Karunanidhi’s battle for state autonomy

Karunanidhi, whose first tenure as Tamil Nadu chief minister was between 1969 and 1971, coined the Maanilathil Suyatchi, Mathiyil Kootatchi (Autonomy for States, Federalism at the Centre) slogan in 1970 in Trichy.

The Rajamannar Commission, set up by the DMK government in 1969, submitted its report to Karunanidhi on the Centre-state relations in May 1971, as per The South First report.

Addressing a book launch event on state autonomy in Chennai in February 1974, Karunanidhi asked why the chief ministers were “ignored” during the unfurling of the flag when the prime minister could hoist the flag on Independence Day, reported The Hindu.

Karunanidhi’s letter to Indira Gandhi

Karunanidhi shot off a letter to the then PM Indira Gandhi pointing out different practices in Delhi and other states. The DMK leader said that the President unfurled the tricolour on Republic Day and the prime minister on Independence Day.

According to The Hindu report, Governors, generally considered representatives of the Central government, unfurled the national flag on Republic Day and Independence Day until 1973.

However, this changed in 1974 when Karunanidhi took up the matter with Gandhi. The Central government agreed to his demand in July of that year.

Recalling the incident, Karunanidhi wrote in his autobiographical work, Nenjukku Needhi : “Every year, on August 15, it was a practice that the Governor will hoist the national flag at the State Secretariat. It was due to my repeated efforts in writing letters to Delhi (Union government) and repeatedly raising the issue in person as to why democratically elected Chief Ministers should not be given this right, it was decided that Governors will unfurl the national flag on Republic Day alone and Chief Ministers will hoist the national flag on Independence Day”.

The Hindu report titled CMs to unfurl tricolour published on July 31, 1974 mentioned, “The Government of India has accepted the suggestion of the Tamil Nadu Government [headed by Karunanidhi] that Chief Ministers should be permitted to unfurl the national flag on August 15 in the State capitals”.

It added, “He (Karunanidhi) said this was in response to a complaint he made at a function in Madras in February that while the President unfurled the national flag in Delhi on the Republic Day and the Prime Minister on the Independence Day, the Chief Ministers did not enjoy even this privilege….”

On August 15, 1974, Karunanidhi became the first Tamil Nadu CM to unfurl the national flag at the historic Fort St. George in Chennai.

Why it was significant for Karunanidhi?

In the early 1970s, Karunanidhi wanted a separate flag for Tamil Nadu, which had the national flag in one-quarter, while the main space consisted state emblem and a temple tower, as per The South First report.

According to N Arumuga Nainar, a senior DMK functionary, Thalaivar (Karunanidhi) was asked to encompass Mooventhar (Chera, Chola, and Pandiyas) symbols in the proposed flag. “But Kalaignar was particular about incorporating the Indian flag,” he told The South First.

“Kalaingar was so keen on the state’s autonomy and wanted to give a befitting reply to allegations of ‘separatism’ against the DMK. He always respected the national flag.
