Rangamarthanda Review: Performances Dominate The Plot
Movie: Rangamarthanda Rating: 3/5 Banner: Rajashyamala Entertainments and Housefull Movies Cast: Prakash Raj, Brahmanandam, Ramya Krishna, Anasuya, Adarsh Balakrishna, Shivathmika, Rahul Sipligunj, Bhadram, and others Dialogues: Akella Siva Prasad Music: Ilayaraja Cinematography: Raj Nelli Editor: Pavan VK Art: Dattatreya Jhansi Producers: Kalipu Madhu and S Venkat Reddy Screenplay and Direction: Krishna Vamsi Release Date: March 22, 2023
"Rangamarthanda" has received a great deal of praise since its early premiere screenings. Positive feedback flooded social media.
Is the film really that good? Let's find out...
Story: Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) receives the title Rangamarthanda for his outstanding performances but retires from the stage to spend more time with his wife Raju garu (Ramya Krishna) and children.
Rangarao (Aadarsh Balakrishna) and Sri (Shivathmika Rajashekar) are their children. Rangarao marries Geeta (Anasuya Bharadwaj), and Sri marries Rahul (Rahul Sipligunj). Raghava Rao leaves all of his money and assets to his children, hoping that they will look after him and his wife.
However, Raghava Rao encounters surprises in this chapter of his life, particularly their children's failure to treat him with the same love and respect he had shown them.
Artistes’ Performances: Three actors delivered powerful performances. Naturally, Prakash Raj in the title role walks away with laurels. His acting in the scenes set in the world of stage play appears a little theatrical, but he is fantastic in the scenes with his children. He's fantastic as a distraught parent.
Brahmanandam is a pleasant surprise. The veteran comedian steals the show in his full-length non-comedic role. He even breaks down in tears. Be on the lookout for his scene with Prakash Raj, in which he plays Duryodhana and Karna while lying in a hospital bed.
Ramya Krishna adds a touch of her brilliance to the mix in a more understated way.
Rahul Sipligunj stands out from the crowd with his genuine performance. Shivathmika demonstrates that she has great acting potential. Anasuya and Adarsh Balakrishna play their stereotypical roles well.
Technical Excellence: Maestro Ilayaraja has composed music that complements this theme. "Damidi" is catchy. A song performed by the maestro himself plays in the background, adding gravitas to the story.
The editing should have been more precise. The dialogue flows naturally with the story. The camera work is satisfactory.
Highlights: Performances by Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam Emotional scenes The hospital scene involving Brahmanandam
Drawback: Old school scenes Cliched narrative
Analysis In spite of the fact that "Rangamarthanda" is a remake of the critically acclaimed Marathi film "Natsamrat," the story is not unfamiliar to Telugu viewers. The central drama is one that we are all familiar with from old films like "Samsaram Oka Chadarangam" and "Soorigadu," or from television shows. However, the Marathi film shed new light on acting and the curse of actors, who must live the lives created for them by writers and directors while simultaneously confronting the harsh realities of the real world.
In one scene, Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam's characters, two friends, are praising their wonderful wives for allowing them to follow their dreams and grow as actors. They feel guilty because they had more extramarital affairs than awards, and they don't know if their sins can be forgiven.
In another scene, a recently widowed Brahmanandam sits on his hospital bed, acting out a scene from one of their plays before suddenly asking his friend to help him die.
Such sequences make a lot of difference to this sentimental drama. Without these scenes, this film would have become another clichéd sentiment drama about the generation gap between parents and children.
The film effectively juggles two very different genres, depicting the lives of retired actors and a family drama. However, the emotional thread of children and parents experiencing a disconnect drives much of the story. The children are not villains or bad, but their parents suffer from the clash of opinions and tastes. The daughter-in-law feels stifled by her husband's dad's traditionalist ways. Furthermore, their own daughter has them moved downstairs so they won't embarrass her and her husband in front of guests. These are the same tired plot devices found in countless other family dramas. Unfortunately, "Rangamarthanda" focuses on these cliched scenes in an attempt to move us to tears. Despite the generic nature of the scenes, the film ultimately accomplishes its goals.
Krishna Vamsi’s “Rangamarthanda” primarily gets emotional scenes right, whether they are clichéd or new. Plus, the performances are strong. Brahmanandam, Prakash Raj, and Ramya Krishna make the film work with their acting.
Krishna Vamsi is bold to present a film that deals with the sentiment sequences in an era where only commercial entertainers dominate the scene. It would have been a superb film if it weren't for the fact that it recycles tired plot devices and scenes from films made more than a decade ago. The narration is also very predictable, which is a major flaw.
All in all, strong acting and a few genuinely moving scenes make "Rangamarthanda" worth watching. It may not work for all people, but those who like sentiment dramas will enjoy it.
Bottom line: Sentimental Show

What’s it about!
After many years on stage, Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) decides to call it quits so that he can devote more time to his family. He is given the honorific “Rangamarthanda” on the day he retires. His wife Raju Garu (Ramya Krishna) warns him against it, but he eventually gives his son Ranga Rao (Aadarsh Balakrishna) the family home and his daughter Sri (Shivathmika) his savings and jewelry.
Raghava Rao and Raju Garu move in with their son and daughter-in-law Geeta (Anasuya). Raghava Rao’s actor friend and co-worker Chakrapani (Brahmanandam) is, on the other hand, childless.
Raghava Rao soon realizes that his “behavior” is putting a strain on the next generation. The way their own children are treating them becomes too much for the elderly parents to bear.
In “Rangamarthanda,” an adaptation of the 2016 Marathi film “Natsamrat,” director Krishna Vamsi makes his long-awaited directorial return with a story that explores the life of an actor alongside the generation gap between parents and children.
The film begins with the news that Kala Bharathi has been reduced to ashes, and a retired actor rushes to the location where he performed most of his plays, reminiscing about his life. The actor, played by Prakash Raj, is proud of his accomplishments and his work as an artist, but he is consumed by guilt for not spending enough time with his family and not showing enough love to his wife, who has turned a blind eye to his numerous affairs and allowed him to flourish as an actor because of her unwavering support. Thus, he gives away all his earnings to his children and hopes to spend with them.
From here, the film enters the territory of a well-known story about elderly parents struggling to cope with their children’s neglect. Many Telugu films, including “Kalikalam” and “Soorigadu,” have addressed this issue. So the sequences and problems between the parents and their children are nothing new. Furthermore, the tropes are cliched. Still, what works for this film is Krishna Vamsi’s deft direction and the story’s inherent sentimentality.
The film also features solid performances. When Prakash Raj has to portray a distraught father who is hurt by the way his children treat him, he excels. Brahmanandam, a veteran comedian, demonstrates that he is also a gifted actor by delivering a moving performance that rivals the clarity of his comedic ones. The scene in the hospital with Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam would get applause.
Ramya Krishna gives a restrained performance. The actress gives depth to her portrayal of a wife who supports her husband. But “Raju Garu” is an unusual name for her character.
Maestro Ilayaraja’s music adds depth. Other technical departments have done neat job. Dialogues are fine. Despite the fact that the film is a remake, Krishna Vamsi adds his own directorial touch.
Bottom-line: While the story of a generation gap between parents and children is not new, the excellent performances in “Rangamarthanda” help to compensate. Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam both give moving performances under Krishnavamsi’s direction. There are some moving moments, but there are also a lot of tired tropes.

Rangamarthanda review: This high-pitch emotional tale is more for those interested in the bygone era
Though director Krishna Vamsi is in better form when compared to his previous films, this one turns out to be pretty one-dimensional.

There are certain tropes associated with films related to old-age parents. These clichés seem to be a must, irrespective of whatever language the film is. The younger generation is always the villain and the root cause of all their problems.
The audience is meant to sympathise with the parents even if they are in the wrong. The daughter-in-law who cannot adjust to a joint family and her need to have an individual space is looked down upon as something bad.
Director Krishna Vamsi’s Rangamarthanda (a title conferred on a skilled theatre artist) pretty much follows this blueprint. But what makes the movie slightly different is how he integrates the life of a stage artist into this familiar tale.
Through the characters of Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam, the film talks about how performing on stage is different from living a real-life role.
The retirement life of a stage artist
Rangamarthanda is a remake of the 2016 Marathi film Natsamrat starring Nana Patekar. For those who did not watch the original, the Telugu remake is the story of a celebrated theatre artist Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj).

He rules the stage for decades. He takes retirement to spend more time with his family. Though his intentions are pure, Raghava Rao is too straightforward to adjust to the changing landscape.
His unfiltered attitude often becomes a problem when he stays with his daughter-in-law and then his daughter.
Ramya Krishna is a dutiful wife who adores and walks in the footsteps of her husband.
Anasuya Bharadwaj’s Geetha is the supposedly shrewd daughter-in-law.
Shivathmika Rajashekar plays the daughter who later turns out to be a villain because of a misunderstanding.

Siddu (Ali Reza) plays a spoilt brat and an upcoming actor who has a connection to Raghava Rao in the past. He spends most of his screen time listening to the flashback story of Raghava Rao.
After Prakash Raj, Brahmanandam gets the next big part to play. He plays Raghava Rao’s best friend and a fellow stage artist.
Unlike most of Brahmanandam’s previous films, the senior actor doesn’t do any comedy here.

Brahmanandam & Prakash Raj complement each other
The best parts of Rangamarthanda are easily the portions involving Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam. Their scenes have both wit and emotional resonance.
On more than one occasion, they move audiences with their emotional acting.
For example, there is a scene where the onscreen wife of Brahmanandam dies. Sitting next to the pyre, he wonders why he can’t shed tears unlike in similar situations on stage.
Related: Brahmanandam talks about his role in Rangamarthanda
Also, there is a scene in the hospital room where Brahmanandam and Raghava Rao enact a part of the “Karna-Duryodhana” play in dialogues. This scene is a treat to watch even if you are not so much into stage plays.
Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam do most of the heavy lifting as far as acting is concerned.
Brahmanandam deserves extra points for his exceptional performance because he has never done this kind of role before.
With Rangamarthanda , the veteran actor shows that he is more than capable of doing heavy roles, too.

Shivathmika Rajashekar & Rahul Sipligunj excel
The portions involving Shivathmika Rajashekar and Rahul Sipligunj are good to watch.
Rahul Sipligunj brings a certain freshness to the table with his Telangana slang. The singer-turned-actor brings a much-needed liveliness to this otherwise depressing story.
Shivathmika Rajashekar springs a pleasant surprise by more than holding her own opposite both Prakash Raj and Ramya Krishna. She does quite well as a caring daughter.

The viewers feel bad when a small misunderstanding involving her snowballs into a big issue later on.
Ilaiyaraaja’s music goes perfectly well with the mood of the film. His songs have a certain weight and add depth to the woes of Raghava Rao.
The dialogues are a bit of a mixed bag. Some turn out to be extremely preachy but there are also some gems. Not surprisingly, most of these are delivered by Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam.

Cliched and overdramatic
What considerably pulls Rangamarthanda down is the pile of clichés.
The concerns about Anasuya Bharadwaj’s character are genuinely valid but the treatment is extremely one-sided.
Another example is regarding Telugu — how speaking Telugu is looked down upon in schools.
There is no denying that everything has become an English medium but the point should have been made subtly. The school principal’s role comes across as more of an NRI villain.
A poster of Krishna Vamsi’s ‘Rangamarthanda’ movie. (director_kv/Twitter)
Another problem with Rangamarthanda is how it looks at the inability of Raghava Rao to adjust to his new life. We are meant to sympathise with him even when he is clearly in the wrong.
Simple problems unnecessarily snowball into bigger issues. Some problems have also been added for the sake of it.
The biggest example of this is the death sequence featuring Ramya Krishna. As viewers, we don’t feel sad as it is overdramatic.
Even the end message about looking after your parents are more hammered in rather than coming as organic.
The irony of the situation is that Raghava Rao was very successful in portraying different roles on stage. But, in real life, he is unable to perform the one role that is expected of him.

Above all, at the beginning of the film, there is a monologue in the voice of actor Chiranjeevi dedicated to the senior male Telugu Cinema actors. The photos of these Telugu actors are shown as part of the commentary.
I wonder why the makers went for screen actors instead of stage actors as the film is all about a stage artist!
In a nutshell, Rangamarthanda is for a thin section of the audience. Watch it if you are a fan of Prakash Raj or Brahmanandam or if you are an avid follower of stage plays.

Rangamarthanda Review
Rangamarthanda Movie : What's Behind
Krishna Vamsi's Rangamarthanda is attracting the attention of all with the star-studded cast apart from the voice-over of Mega Star Chiranjeevi. The makers showed extreme confidence by arranging for special premieres for celebrities and select media personnel. All the celebrities, especially contemporary directors sang praises on the film's emotional comment and Krishna Vamsi's direction and roared 'KV is back'. Perhaps The film's promotions got a good response and the film is releasing on 22 March 2023. The film's OTT streaming rights have been bagged by Amazon Prime and streaming will be done after the end of its theatrical run. Let us find out what Rangamarthanda offered to movie lovers.
Rangamarthanda : Story Review
Rangamarthanda's story is about a stage actor and the trials and tribulations he faces after he retires from his profession and relinquishes everything. Top film star Siddharth (Ali Reza) finds Rangamarthanda Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) who is not keen to reveal his identity. He follows him and promises him not to ask any questions and takes him to Kalakshetra in Hyderabad which was gutted in the fire. Rangamarthanda Raghava Rao turns emotional and in the meantime, Siddharth informs Raghava Rao's family members. Why Raghava Rao is in a pitiable condition and what happened to his wife Rajugaru (Ramyakrishnan), son Ranga Rao (Adarsh Balakrishna), daughter-in-law Geeta Rangarao (Anasuya Bharadwaj), daughter Siri aka Bangaram (Shivatmika Rajasekhar), son in law Rahul (Rahul Sipligunj), friend Chakrapani (Brahmanandam) from the crux of the story.
Rangamarthanda : Artists Review
Prakash Raj lived in the role of Rangamarthanda. He showed good emotions, and expressions and his dialogue delivery is excellent. He made his presence felt with his body language. He carried the film on his shoulders. Ramyakrishnan supported him quite well. Though she has very few dialogues, they are impactful. In other scenes, she expressed herself through her eyes. She got the best role in the recent past.
Brahmanandam who is not seen on screen nowadays got a meaty role. The scenes featuring Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam are quite good, touching, and emotional. Adarsh Balakrishna as Prakash Raj's son is ok. He got limited screen presence. Anasuya as Prakash Raj's daughter in law is good. Shivatmika Rajasekhar performed well in the role of Prakash Raj's daughter. She expressed herself quite well as a caring person and then showed good emotions in the later part.
Rahul Sipliguj made his presence felt. He got a good role as the son-in-law of Prakash Raj and impressed with his dialogues. Ali Reza is good as the film star. Others performed according to their roles. Tanikella Bharani played a cameo.
Rangamarthanda : Technicians Review
The Rangamarthanda story readied by Krishna Vamsi is the remake of the Marathi film Natasamrat. It is based on Marathi play of the same name written by playwright Kusumagraj. Krishna Vamsi did not tamper with the original but added a few elements and emotions according to the tastes of the Telugu viewers and their sensitivity. The narration starts with the voice-over of Mega Star Chiranjeevi which highlights the life of an actor. The entire first half showed how Rangamarthanda after tasting success as a drama artist, decides to call it a day and decides to complete his responsibilities of distributing his properties to his son and daughter. From then on, the first half showed the change of behavior in the son and daughter-in-law against Rangamarthanda. The first half ends there setting the tone for the second half.
While Krishna Vamsi decided to dedicate the first half to Rangamarthanda's son, he dedicated the second half to Rangamarthanda's daughter. He just passed through the motions in the first half as the son's character is just marginal and the entire proceedings are dominated by his wife. The second half is more emotional with the daughter getting the more prominent role. Finally, the film ends on an emotional note.
Krishna Vamsi's story is nothing new and is seen in many earlier films. The main plot is about how children ignore their parents in their old age after getting their property. The only thing new in this film is the story is blended with the stage artist and drama involved in it. The dialogues are blended with how stage actors or drama artists act on stage in various roles and how in real life people act conveniently. His screenplay and direction lacked an emotional connection though most of the film is loaded with high emotions.
His screenplay looked convoluted and unidimensional. He tried to paint the younger generation as the cause of all the problems and this may not connect chords with the current generation people. Krishna Vamsi penned the story from his viewpoint and this may touch and appeal to only the older generation who are actually averse to going out and watching films in theatres. Though the plot is predictable, Krishna Vamsi loaded the film and narration with intense emotions connecting the chords with the movie lovers.
The dialogues are touching and pierce hearts. Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam's dialogues for the major part and their scene in the hospital bring tears to the eyes of all. Similarly, the way Prakash Raj reacts when the International School advocates talking in English and punishing students for speaking in their mother tongue (Telugu) and the way he reacts when the school makes children dance to some songs with double-meaning words, making everyone's blood boil. Prakash Raj and Ramyakrishnan's scenes move all completely. Ramyakrishnan supports Prakash Raj and also warns him when he was about take major decisions blindly out of love for his children is an eye-opener to all. When Prakash Raj reacts strongly along with Ramyakrishnan when they were accused of taking their daughter's money, people get connected to him.
Pawan Kumar's editing could have been better. There are many repetitive scenes that dragged the pace and slowed the narration. Raj K Nalli's cinematography is ok. He could have used camera angles in a more perfect manner. Maestro Ilayaraja's music suits the mood of the movie and one song is quite good. The background music also seems to be an integral part of the story. Dialogues are powerful and emotional. But at times they turned extremely preachy. Though the production values look pretty ordinary, the entire team should be complimented for Faced with financial difficulties, passing through the two covid waves and lockdown and deciding to go for the theatrical release rejecting the fancy offers from the OTTs.
Rangamarthanda : Advantages
- Performances
Rangamarthanda : Disadvantages
- Routine Narration
- Lack of Commercial Elements
Rangamarthanda : Rating Analysis
Altogether, Rangamathanda is an Emotional Saga directed by Krishna Vamsi is a direct attack on the younger generation who neglect their parents. The film has a tagline 'Amma Naannala Katha'. The story is emotionally driven and touches the hearts of all piercing the souls. Rangamarthanda is helped by powerful and impactful performances from the extremely talented cast. Krishna Vamsi got the optimum performances from the entire cast and crew and made a powerful impact with beautiful emotions. Had Krishna Vamsi fine-tuned the script and added a few more youthful elements, Rangamarthanda would have roared at the box office. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 3 Rating for Rangamarthanda .

Rangamarthanda Movie Review: After a gap of six years, Krishna Vamsi made his comeback in direction field with Rangamarthanda starring Prakash Raj, Ramya Krishnan, Brahmanandam, Aadarsh Balakrishna, and others, which has finally arrived at the theaters on 22nd March. Let’s see the story of Rangamarthanda.
Story: Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) is a stage actor who has reached the top of his career. For his unprecedented contribution to art, he was given the title Rangamarthanda. As he grows older, he decides to retire from his profession and divides his property among his children Sri (Shivathmika Rajasekhar) and Ranga (Adarsh Balakrishna). Afterwards, both he and his wife Raju Garu (Ramya Krishnan) gets mistreated by their children. The rest of the story is the emotional drama between Rangmarthanda Raghava Rao and his children.
Plus Points:
· Casting
· Prakash Raj Performance
· Emotional scenes between Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam
· Megastar Chiranjeevi voiceover
Minus Points:
· First half slow pace
· Few lag scenes
· Editing
Performance: Firstly, the director Krishna Vamsi who took Prakash Raj for the main role of Raghava Rao in this movie is really commendable. Prakash Raj once again lived a wonderful life in the role of Raghava Rao in this movie, similar to his role in the Kanchivaram movie, which won the National Award a few years ago. Many of his scenes touch the audience and make them cry. Padmasree Brahmanandam once again proved that actors who can cultivate comedy can also cultivate heartfelt emotions. In the first half of the comedy, his character moves us very emotionally in the second half. Ramya Krishna also acted very well as a support artist for Prakash Raj as a housewife. Shivathmika Rajasekhar performed her role naturally and impressively. Also, Anasuya Bhardwaj, Rahul Sipliganj and Adarsh Balakrishna acted very well in their respective roles.
Technical: The music provided by Ilayaraja are good. Especially the dance of Prakash Raj is very good along with the party song. Raj K Nalli’s photography is good and the production values are also good. The editing work is just ok. And the dialogues written by Shiv Prasad are very good. Despite taking a gap, director Krishna Vamsi once again brought out his amazing directorial talent with Rangamarthanda. He has directed this movie so that the first half is loaded with fun and the second half has number of emotional scenes, touching the hearts of all sections of the audience. But in the middle, the story of the saga feels a bit ordinary.
Analysis: Overall Rangamarthanda is the story of a stage artist. Krishna Vamsi made this movie appealing to people of all ages. This emotional drama will connect well with the family audience. Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam impress everyone by the excellent performances. This is a must watch movie.

‘Rangamarthanda’ movie review: Prakash Raj, Brahmanandam’s moving portrayals prop up an old-school drama
Director krishna vamsi’s telugu adaptation of ‘natsamrat’ has impressive segments that get undone by a few cliched tropes.

Rangamarthanda’s strength is its talented cast | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement
The stage that has been ravaged by time and fire has witnessed better times; an ageing actor who stands amid the ruins on that stage has also witnessed better times. His story serves as a foil to discussing the purpose of art and the fragility of fame. Director Krishna Vamsi’s Telugu film Rangamarthanda , which arrives in theatres nearly six years after his last film Nakshatram , is an adaptation of the acclaimed 2016 Marathi film Natsamrat , headlined by Nana Patekar and directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. Krishna Vamsi’s film is led by Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam, and supported by Ramya Krishna, Shivathmika Rajashekhar and others. The cast infuses life into a drama that discusses several facets of an actor’s life but eventually gets weighed down by a cliched treatment of old tropes.
Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) bids adieu to his stage career soon after he is conferred the title of ‘Rangamarthanda’, in recognition of his mastery as a stage actor. The throw of his voice is no longer what it used to be; he understands the withering that comes with age and calls it a day when he is still revered. He hopes to lead the rest of his life in peace. But he does something that is not pragmatic — gives away his house and savings to his son Ranga Rao (Aadarsh Balakrishna) and his daughter Sridevi (Shivathmika). His ever-supporting wife whom he calls Raju ‘garu’ (Ramya Krishna), cautions him. Whether his faith in his children will hold good is anyone’s guess.
The conflicts between the elders and their son and daughter-in-law Geetha (Anasuya Bharadwaj) follow a staid path that we’ve seen in several older Indian films. The battle lines gradually come to the fore and the differences between the generations play out in a predictable manner. Krishna Vamsi takes an old-school approach to drive home the point about the relevance of native language, literature, arts and food systems. Aspiring actor Siddharth (Ali Reza), who wants to be ‘a pan-India superstar’, rubbishes the art of acting for the stage; the health-conscious Geetha frowns at the staple traditional diet. And, an international school asserts that speaking in ‘Telgu’ (the spelling in this review is intentional, to reflect the scene in the film) is punishable. Though well intended, all these issues are hammered in a preachy manner.
Rangamarthanda
Cast: prakash raj, brahmanandam, ramya krishna, direction: krishna vamsi, music: ilaiyaraaja.
The film contrasts the story of Raghava Rao and his children with that of his friend Chakrapani (Brahmanandam) who has no wards. As their lives go through a downward spiral, the friends have only memories of their art to hold on to. The film rests on the shoulders of Prakash Raj and Brahmanandam. Prakash Raj steps it up when he has to depict the exuberance of a theatre actor and plays it down in the scenes where he quietly takes the barbs from his children. Brahmanandam, cast in a part that hardly lets him smile, leave alone crack a joke, leaves us moist-eyed as he delivers a monologue in the later portions of the film. Unlike her famous authoritative characters such as Sivagami or Neelambari, Ramya Krishna slips into the part of a wife who displays quiet strength and can see through the plans of her children.
A surprise in the cast comes in the form of singer Rahul Sipligunj as a Telangana folk-inspired fusion musician; he puts up a restrained act and offsets the exuberance of Shivathmika’s character. Aadarsh and Anasuya’s characterisations, most of the time, appear to be one-note. He is meek, while she is the stereotypical bad daughter-in-law. They try to put their best foot forward within the limitations of their characters. Shivathmika is cast as a child-woman wears her heart on her sleeve and delivers what is expected of her.
Rangamarthanda tries to go where most mainstream Telugu films do not. The opening lyrical rendition of ‘Nenoka natudni’ (I am an actor), in which Chiranjeevi lends voice to Lakshmi Bhoopal’s lyrics that discuss the life of an actor, and Ilaiyaraaja’s music, establish right at the beginning that Krishna Vamsi wants to veer away from the oft-treaded path. There are several references to both Telugu and English plays through the narrative that complement the philosophical discourses concerning artists and life.
If only the family ties had been explored using incidents and tropes that do not seem like they are plucked from a two or three-decade-old movie or television series, this film would have been worthwhile.

Rangamarthanda is the big-screen comeback of director Krishna Vamsi, who delivered several blockbusters throughout his career. It’s been a time since the audience got to see his mark of films on the big screen, which are dominated by the perfect Telugu flavor. With Rangamarthanda being his long-awaited comeback, there have been good expectations on the film. Let’s see how the film has turned out to be upon its release.
Rangamarthanda is about Raghava Rao and Chakrapani, who are stage actors and best friends. They share a very close bond and have traveled the world performing on the stage, having donned various characters throughout their career and received numerous accolades from everywhere. After having lived such a fulfilled life, they face life, which is a stage in itself. This is where the real drama begins, as the rest of the story focuses on how the two tackle life together.
On-Screen Performances:
As expected, Prakash Raj gives a memorable performance, and the scenes in which he interacts with his family and wife are very much dramatic and emotionally connected. It makes one associate themselves with the emotional conflict that Prakash Raj’s character is going through. The actor has not let the audience down with his performance and has breathed life into the character of Raghava Rao. Prakash Raj’s scenes with Brahmanandam are the highlight of the film, as some truly meaningful conversations and emotions transpire between the two.
Brahmanandam’s performance in the film as Chakrapani si the true surprise and winner of the film. This is because the actor showcases his flair and ease in dramatic roles and proves what a versatile actor he is. Audiences have been accustomed to seeing the actor in comedic roles throughout his career, and Rangamarthanda shows a side of Brahmanandam that has only very rarely been tapped. The actor shines in the dramatic and emotional scenes and is a treat to watch on the screen.
Ramya Krishna gives a very subtle yet lasting performance as Prakash Raj’s wife. Her character is the bonding gel of the family and the tumultuous journey she goes through when she sees her family breaking apart has been showcased wonderfully by her.
The rest of the supporting cast, which includes Shivatmika Rajasekhar, Adarsh, Anasuya, singer Rahul Sipligunj’s debut as an actor, and several others, have all done a good job with what they have been given.
Off Screen Talents:
Director Krishna Vamsi’s mark is visible throughout the film, even though it may be missing in a few scenes. While Rangamarthanda may be a remake of the Marathi film Nata Samrat, Krishna Vamsi has adapted it well to suit the Telugu nativity. The director has taken all the aspects and qualities that tie a Telugu family together, and all their emotions, and has come up with a script that is relatable to all. Rangamarthanda shows Krishna Vamsi’s flair as a director, taking the audiences back to the many films that the director has made. The screenplay of the movie is very predictable and linear, which can make the movie a bit boring. Despite that, Rangamarthanda is a movie that everyone needs to watch.
The music and background score by Ilayaraja are in tune with the theme of the film, and go hand in hand with the scenes on the big screen.
The cinematography and the production design of the film are good and appropriate. The editing could have been a bit better.
Plus Points:
- Lead performances
- Emotional connect
Minus Points:
- Routine Screenplay
Verdict: Rangamarthanda has a very good emotional value and tells the tale of a family well. It’s a story that everyone needs to watch without fail.

Rangamarthanda Movie Review
Article by Cinephile Published by GulteDesk --> Published on: 6:22 am, 23 March 2023
Cast : Prakash Raj, Brahmanandam, Ramya Krishna, Anasuya, Adarsh, Shivathmika, Rahul Sipligunj and others Director : Krishna Vamsi Music : Ilayaraja Producers : Kalipu Madhu & S Venkat Reddy Banner : Rajashyamala Entertainments and Housefull Movies Release Date : March 22, 2023
Nearly after 5 years, creative director Krishna Vamsi is back with ‘Rangamarthanda’, a very important film for him that is a remake of the much acclaimed and successful Marathi movie, ‘Natasamrat’. Let’s find out how effectively he handled this remake.
A Veteran Thespian, Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) retires from his theatre acting and wishes to spend some time with his family. He and his friend Chakri (Brahmanandam) both used to be much-revered stage actors who find themselves struggling to fit amidst the dramatic life outside the theatre, rest of the movie depicts the life journey of Raghava Rao and his wife ‘Raajugaaru’ (Ramya Krishna) going through the hurdles because of their son and daughter.
Actors performances :
Prakash Raj was in fine form in the skin of a retired stage actor, especially in the second half, his performance was a great achievement, to say the least. Ramya Krishna as ‘Raajugaaru’ was too adorable and admirable, all her scenes came out really well, and thanks to her panache at subtle acting, we feel for this lady with all our hearts. The most surprising of all is Brahmanandam’s performance as ‘Chakri’, the legendary comedian who gives a legendary performance despite with limited screen presence, he evokes a sea of emotions leaving a lump in our throats. We can see a never before brahmanandam in Rangamarthanda who will make people cry.
Writing and Direction :
We know how unique Krishna Vamsi used to be in bringing human emotions quite powerfully onto the screen. He used to make his artists perform so beautifully that even the melodramatic scenes would fascinate us. ‘Rangamaarthanda’ almost did bring back that vintage Krishna Vamsi as a director on extracting superb performances from leads. However, the writing part by Akella Shivaprasad in terms of dialogues is very good but in adapting the Marathi movie to Telugu cinematic sensibilities has gone for a toss a bit. The first half kinda bores the audience, many dramatic things happen but except for one or two none of those hit us with strong emotions, the drama looks forced with cliched scenes and on-the-nose messages. One good change they made in the first half compared to original is the witty dialogues by brahmi at every possible scene which made the boring first half a bit better. it’s only during the second half that the movie redeems itself, the writing gets better, the emotions start to elevate, the ever-loving dynamics between Prakash Raj and Ramya Krishna characters warm our hearts, and the scenes between his and Brahmanandam characters bound to tug at your heartstrings.
Other Technicalities :
The cinematography by Raj K Nalli could have been better. The visuals seem to lack proper focus on the actors, except for theatre shots, his work felt amateurish. The music by Ilaiyaraaja is decent, a couple of songs say ‘Dhamadi Chemanthi’ and ‘Poovai Virise Pranam’ were good to watch on screen, and the background score was quite forgettable. Editing by Pavan was bad in the first half and feels decent in the second half.
Performances From Lead Cast
Emotional Moments In Second Half
Final word : Overall, ‘Rangamaarthaandaa’ is a decent remake anchored by some amazing performances.

Natural Star Nani and director Vivek Athreya’s new movie Saripodhaa Sanivaaram has finally hit theaters amidst a lot of expectations. Want to know if it meets those expectations? Check out our review.
Bound by a promise to his mother, Surya (Nani) keeps his anger in check for six days, unleashing it only on Saturdays against those who have wronged him. A tragic incident in Sokulapalem sets him on a collision course with the ruthless CI Daya (SJ Suryah). As Surya seeks to make Daya pay for his misdeeds, he crosses paths with Charulatha (Priyanka Arul Mohan), a policewoman whose involvement adds another layer of complexity. What ignited Surya’s fury against Daya? How does the politician Koormanandam (Murali Sharma) fit into this tangled web? And who really is Charulatha? The film gives all the answers.
Plus Points:
Nani delivers a standout performance as a man who suppresses his anger throughout the week, only to unleash it on Saturdays. His portrayal of this complex character is both compelling and convincing.
SJ Suryah impresses as the ruthless cop Daya, bringing a unique intensity to the role. His face-off scenes with Nani are particularly engaging, and his sarcastic dialogue delivery adds a humorous touch, marking one of his best performances to date.
Priyanka Mohan performs well and shares a decent on-screen chemistry with Nani. Though their romantic interactions are minimal, they contribute to the narrative.
Murali Sharma plays a politician with adequacy, while Sai Kumar makes his presence felt. Aditi Balan, Harshavardhan, and others deliver their roles with finesse.
The film’s music, composed by Jakes Bejoy, significantly enhances various scenes, whether action-packed or emotional. His score plays a crucial role in elevating the film’s overall experience.
Minus Points:
Despite an intriguing concept, the film suffers from narrative issues. Vivek Athreya, despite his experience from Ante Sundaraniki, still struggles with screenplay execution. Some scenes succeed, while others fall short.
The first half of the film is primarily focused on character introductions and feels somewhat sluggish. Although the second half starts strong, it loses steam towards the climax that could have been more impactful.
While characters like Aditi Balan and Abhirami add to the emotional depth, their roles could have been expanded for a more engaging experience. Murali Sharma’s character could have been written better.
The film’s lengthy runtime may deter viewers who prefer a more dynamic pace. A tighter screenplay could have improved overall engagement, especially during the face-off scenes.
Technical Aspects:
Vivek Athreya’s story is decent, but his narration requires refinement. Focusing on pacing and scene execution could have enhanced audience engagement.
Jakes Bejoy’s music is exceptional, complementing the film’s tone effectively. G. Murali’s cinematography is solid, though Karthik’s editing could have been better. The production values are nice.
On the whole, Saripodhaa Sanivaaram is an enjoyable action drama featuring standout performances from Nani and SJ Suryah, complemented by a remarkable score. However, the slow narrative in parts and an extended first half somewhat diminish its impact. Don’t wait – book your tickets now for an entertaining weekend.
