Factors Influencing Students in Choosing their College Course

Deciding for a college course to take is quiet challenging for a student due to the many influencing factors or reasons in the environment that may affect his own preference. This study aimed to determine the factors that influence the College of Education students at MSU-TCTO in choosing Education as their college course. Further, it tried to determine different approaches in managing the course they are currently taking at the college. The result of this study would benefit the administrators, teachers, parents, students, and future researchers as they gain new insights about the factors that influence the students in choosing their college course. This study made use of a phenomenological-qualitative study conducted to the selected students at the College of Education, MSU-TCTO. Interview guide was utilized to gather the needed data. It consists of guide questions validated by the panel of experts. Data gathered were transcribed, thematically analyzed and interpreted. Based on the findings of the study, the common factors that influence the students in choosing Education as their college course were parental discretion/ influences, external influences, affordability, practicality, personal preference and interest, and socioeconomic problems. Moreover, the respondents' yielded different approaches and ways to manage the courses they are currently taking at the College of Education such as self-determination, overcoming fear of subject difficulties, perseverance and self-confidence, personal preference and interest and developing participation and study habit/skills. In conclusion, there were several factors that influenced the COED students in taking Education course. Further, the course they are currently taking were not solely chosen by themselves. The influence of other people in choosing their course may help or hinder them to succeed in life. Hence, appropriate assistance must be provided to students such as seminar or conference on career guidance, among others to assist them with their course placements and help them invest their full potentials.

Career decision and programme selection in the senior high school continues to be problematic for parents, students and other stakeholders due to the challenges it presents. The purpose of this study was to find out how the career decisions of senior high school students affect their choice of academic programmes. The descriptive survey design was employed for this study. The researcher used both questionnaire and interviews as the main instruments for data collection. The target population for the study was all the first students of Kadjebi-Asato senior high school. These students would have completed the process of selecting a programme and will be asked to reflect on the process. In all, 80 students were used for the study. Simple random sampling strategy under the probability sampling technique was employed to select respondents for the study. Tables and percentages were used for the analysis of the response. Findings showed that the career decisions of senior high school students strongly affect their choice of academic programmes. It also emerged from the study that students consider their own interest, intellectual abilities, parents’ advice, friends/peers career choice, individual value, societal perception, teachers’ advice, occupation of parents among others when making career decisions. It also came out that students can best be assisted to make realistic choices in their career decisions through career guidance being given a slot on the school time table, field trips to companies to expose students to the world of work, organization of career conferences, formation of career guidance clubs in schools and the provision of school based guidance counselors. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the Ghana education service should ensure that each educational unit has a guidance and counseling centre to offer guidance services to students, parents and teachers relating to careers and other social issues. These centers will also serve as a place where students can go to gather more information on matters relating to career and other personal issues.

The course selection is one of the most important decisions a student has to make in higher education. Because that decision plays a major role on defining their future. Therefore, they should make the best choice at the very beginning when selecting the course. The objective of the study is to understand the factors, which influence the most of selection of specialization domains among a group of management students of the Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. This study employed as quantitative research. The respondents in this study were undergraduate students. The sample consisted of 75 respondents from different majoring. The available literature and result of the study supported to establish the background for this problem emphasizing not only how students choose their major field of study but also why many students do not tend to select certain courses. Result of this study shows that the most important in the selection of major subjects are Job related factor and Academic Quality.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the influence of parental guidance, peer group, school promotion, and career information on course preference decision. This study applied a mixed-method with quantitative (multiple regression) followed by the qualitative stage. The quantitative analysis technique is done by a regression test and continued with qualitative. The results showed that partially and simultaneously, the variables of parental guidance, peer groups, school promotion, and career information affected the decision making in choosing the competency of students of SMK Muhammadiyah in Bantul. Career information factors of 12.98% most influence students' decision making in choosing expertise competencies. School promotion contributed 8.20% of the decision. The peer factor contributes to 4.78% of the students’ choices. The last of these factors was parental guidance, which provided 4.43%.

The rapid growth of education in Malaysia nowadays encourage the higher educational institutions to provide the best features of courses which align to national aspirations. The positive competition between public university and private university in the admission of students create the great impact of sustainability of the institutions as well. Thus, this study concentrated to give an overview of the factor that encourage students to choose certain courses in higher educational institutions. The determinants of selection addressed consists of the future career, passion, parental influence and peer influence. As conclusion, this study can help the higher institutions to provide some strategies in increasing the number of admission of students and at the same time improve the academic quality and the governance of institution. En la actualidad se emplean cursos en línea con la opción de inscripción gratuita y abierta (MOOCs) como recurso educativo autodidacta, pocas publicaciones mencionan el resultado obtenido en el proceso del aprendizaje y los indicadores empleados para medir este resultado. El presente trabajo muestra el estudio realizado a un grupo de estudiantes de nivel superior para enseñarles el lenguaje de programación Python mediante una aplicación móvil y la asistencia guiada. Se evalúa la lógica de programación mediante preguntas y programas informáticos, la interacción con la aplicación móvil mediante cuestionarios, y la actitud al aprendizaje con encuestas. Mediante el análisis estadístico de frecuencias la variable lógica de programación muestra un nivel de aprobado, en la aplicación móvil se registra un resultado competente y en la actitud un nivel bajo. Dando como resultado que el elemento que predomina en el estudio es la escasa actitud para el aprendizaje.
