So you’ve researched, prepped, streamlined and finalized your resume.  You’re now ready to start sending your work of professional art out into the career space to let it reap the rewards of a job offer.  When it comes to submitting your resume to potential employers, modern job-seekers have a wealth of options beyond the traditional envelope stuffing of yesteryear.

And sure, you’re more than welcome to send your resume off as an attachment to a potential employer, but that approach is far less advanced and convenient than modern sharing platforms, like Google Docs.

Posting your resume on Google Docs can yield a variety of benefits:

  • Easily send a link to your resume rather than bulk digital attachments
  • Collaborate with professional colleagues for resume review
  • Create a permanent, easily editable home for your resume for future additions and editing

Posting and sharing your resume via Google Docs is easier than you’d think.  All you’ll need is a Gmail email address and a little bit of know how. Don’t let any lack of knowledge of the Google platforms scare you away.  Read below for our step by step guide to posting your resume online.

Instructions:

  •  Head on over to the Google Docs main page ( http://docs.google.com/ ).  Here you’ll be prompted to either create an account or sign up for a new one.  Don’t have a Google account already? Never fear, we’ve got the handy link for Google sign up here.
  •  After you’re logged in, you’ll see the main Google docs page.  If you’ve recently created your account, you won’t see any specific items.  Now it’s time to get to creating and filling this space up. Click on the handy red circular plus sign to create a new doc.  Your default choice will be the word processor. Google Docs also has a wide selection of handy templates, including resumes.  You can also add existing files by selecting the file picker option and browsing your computer for your resume.
  •  Spend some time exploring the navigation bar located above the live typing area.  Here you’ll find plenty of plain sense formatting options as well as print and download features.  Google docs allows you to download your completed resume in a variety of popular formats, including Microsoft Word.
  • Once you’ve finished your edits, it’s time to choose the privacy options for your document.  Click on the “Share” button in the upper right corner of the page. Here is where you will be able to select who can view and/or edit your resume.  Here we break out the most common sharing options:
  • Private: Only yourself and people you have specifically invited can view the document.  If you’re in the drafting stages, this may be the best bet until your resume is shiny and polished.
  • You can enter email addresses directly for people who you’d like to receive the link to your document.  You can also create a custom link to our document which can be easily pasted into an email or message.
  • Anyone with Link Can: Use this to decide what people who have the link to your resume can do with it.  Can they view, edit, or only comment? Be sure to check out the advanced options for fine tuning your document privacy.
  •  When you’re ready to share your resume, simply ensure you have the correct sharing settings and copy the URL.  Your recipient will be able to easily access your document from any computer and most mobile devices.

How Do I Share My Resume and Cover Letter?

When your resume is ready, you can use Resume.io to share an online link to your resume for free. By default your materials are private and only shared if you choose to use our sharing features. You can easily download a PDF of your cover letter to be saved and shared with employers.

Sharing a link is a convenient and modern way to send your resume/and or cover letter via email, social media message, or even via text message. You can use our premium design themes online for free without upgrading to a premium account.

How to Share a Resume

Each version of your resume has its own unique URL that can be shared. If you have multiple versions of your resume, you'll have different URLs you can share as well. 

To share a resume, go to your resume dashboard and click “More” on the drop-down menu to access the “Share a link” option. You can also access the “Share a link” option by clicking on the “…” on the bottom right side of the preview page. See the screenshot below.

From there you'll see a page where you can:

  • Copy & paste the URL to send via email, message, or text or
  • Click the button to share on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn

If you have shared a URL but want to make sure that resume is no longer accessible at that URL, the best way to do this is to duplicate your resume that was shared and then delete it. That way your resume will be associated with a URL that hasn't been shared yet. 

Once a resume is deleted, the old URL will redirect to a 404 page.

Why are we all of a sudden mentioning the ATS ?

We know for a fact that top-notch ATS (e.g. Workable) can cope absolutely fine with your resume hyperlinks.

But other applicant tracking systems and CRMs do struggle. When they transform your resume into text-only files , they often lose your hyperlinks.

URLs remain intact no matter what. Hyperlinks are voided null when your resume is printed or converted by the ATS.

Our word of advice: enter your links as URLs.

One more thing about the ATS and hyperlinks.

The systems tend to assess your resumes for relevant keywords , with a focus on the top one-third of your document.

Imagine having links that are quite heavy and go on and on and on with symbols and numbers.

That would ultimately play a bad trick on your application.

How to Build a Resume Website That Will Impress Every Hiring Manager Who Sees It

There are plenty of good reasons to have your own website—if you want to build your online brand , for example, or start a side project .

But for most of you reading this, the reason you want to create a website is because you want to get a job , and you know a sleek resume website highlighting your experience could help you stand out from other candidates—or even help a hiring manager find you to fill a position.

And while you could just copy and paste your resume onto a web page, the online possibilities really are endless, so why not go big or go home?

Don’t worry, though; this doesn’t have to take weeks of your life. If you want to turn your resume into a website that impresses, try one of the strategies below—all of which can be done with no coding knowledge and very little time using website building tools like Squarespace .

Strategy 1: Link to Your Resume From a Landing Page

The easiest and fastest way to get your resume on the web is to create a simple but beautiful single page website with a button linking to the PDF version of your resume front and center. Like this :

There are a couple benefits to this approach. First, if you have a resume you’re proud of, the bulk of the work is already done—all you have to do is write a short bio for the landing page , pick a photo that represents you or your work, and put it all together. You’re also giving hiring managers your resume in a form they’re very familiar with; they can download it, print it, share it with other team members, and more pretty easily.

The biggest downside of putting your resume on the web this way is that search engines can’t read PDFs, so if a hiring manager happened to be Googling for someone with your experience, they wouldn’t necessarily be able to find you. Combat this by including keywords related to your industry and highlighting important skills in the bio text on your landing page, as well as optimizing other on-site SEO features .

Strategy 2: Create a Page for Each Section of Your Resume

This method will take a little extra work, but it will result in a more full-blown website (that’s fully searchable!).

Basically, you’re going to transform each section of your resume into a page on your website. So, your home page might be akin to an objective or summary statement —giving visitors a high-level overview of who you are, what you do, and what you’re looking for. Then, you’ll create a page for your experience, your skills, your education, your achievements, even your hobbies if you want to share a little of your personality—each of which will show up in your site menu, making it easy for hiring managers to find the information they’re looking for.

For the text on each page, start by copying and pasting the text from your resume—but then think of ways to style or bulk it up to look a little nicer on the web. And don’t forget to add links to companies you’ve worked with and projects you’ve worked on when applicable—this is meant to be more dynamic than your paper resume.

Strategy 3: Turn Your Website Into a Multimedia Timeline of Your Work History

This last method will take the most work—but if you’re really looking for your site to help you stand out, it may just do the job. Similar to LinkedIn, you’re going to create a single-page, reverse-chronological timeline of your work history—but this one will be souped up with multimedia elements and designed to be extra beautiful.

Start by picking a website template that lets you create one long, scrolling page with different sections, also known as an index (we love Alex and Pacific from Squarespace .

Then, starting from your most recent work experience to your least, create a section for each place you’ve worked. Feel free to throw relevant volunteer work, side projects, or other personal achievements into the timeline if you want—just make sure to keep it all in order so someone is scrolling through your professional past as they go down your page.

As you’re building out each section, start with your standard bullet points explaining what you did, but then think of ways to add a little oomph. Maybe that’s adding testimonial pull quotes from bosses or co-workers at past jobs. If you have a particularly visual job, you could add a mini portfolio to each role, using a gallery to show specific examples of your work at that company. Can an ATS read hyperlinks?

Because so much of the job search process is online, you need to be prepared to design a resume that works for the web and send it through the appropriate channels.

Depending on which jobs and employers you’re targeting, this might mean sending your resume via email or uploading your resume to a job search or company site.

Employers care whether or not you follow directions, and they generally want employees who are technologically savvy. Therefore, it pays to learn as much as possible about the right ways to format and send your resume before you apply. 

Some job search engines allow you to create a resume using their own resume builders . These walk you through the process of creating your resume, section by section, and format it. For example, job seekers who use Indeed can create a resume online in a variety of formats including Word, PDF, RTF, TXT, and HTML.

Once you have created a resume using a job search engine resume builder, the site will allow you to share it with employers on the same job search engine. When you apply for jobs on the site, you only need to click on your saved resume.
