The History of Coffee

No one knows exactly how or when coffee was discovered, though there are many legends about its origin.

An Ethiopian Legend

Goats

The story goes that that Kaldi discovered coffee after he noticed that after eating the berries from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night .  

Kaldi reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery, who made a drink with the berries and found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery, and knowledge of the energizing berries began to spread.

As word moved east and coffee reached the Arabian peninsula, it began a journey which would bring these beans across the globe.

The Arabian Peninsula

Coffee cultivation and trade began on the Arabian Peninsula.  By the 15th century, coffee was being grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia and by the 16th century it was known in Persia, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey.

Coffee was not only enjoyed in homes, but also in the many public coffee houses — called qahveh khaneh — which began to appear in cities across the Near East. The popularity of the coffee houses was unequaled and people frequented them for all kinds of social activity. 

Not only did the patrons drink coffee and engage in conversation, but they also listened to music, watched performers, played chess and kept current on the news.  Coffee houses quickly became such an important center for the exchange of information that they were often referred to as “Schools of the Wise.”

With thousands of pilgrims visiting the holy city of Mecca each year from all over the world, knowledge of this “wine of Araby” began to spread. 

Coffee Comes to Europe

European travelers to the Near East brought back stories of an unusual dark black beverage. By the 17th century, coffee had made its way to Europe and was becoming popular across the continent. 

Some people reacted to this new beverage with suspicion or fear, calling it the “bitter invention of Satan.” The local clergy condemned coffee when it came to Venice in 1615. The controversy was so great that Pope Clement VIII was asked to intervene. He decided to taste the beverage for himself before making a decision, and found the drink so satisfying that he gave it papal approval.

Despite such controversy, coffee houses were quickly becoming centers of social activity and communication in the major cities of England, Austria, France, Germany and Holland. In England “penny universities” sprang up, so called because for the price of a penny one could purchase a cup of coffee and engage in stimulating conversation.  

Coffee began to replace the common breakfast drink beverages of the time — beer and wine. Those who drank coffee instead of alcohol began the day alert and energized, and not surprisingly, the quality of their work was greatly improved. (We like to think of this a precursor to the modern office coffee service.)

By the mid-17th century, there were over 300 coffee houses in London, many of which attracted like-minded patrons, including merchants, shippers, brokers and artists.

Many businesses grew out of these specialized coffee houses. Lloyd's of London, for example, came into existence at the Edward Lloyd's Coffee House.

The New World

In the mid-1600's, coffee was brought to New Amsterdam, later called New York by the British.

Though coffee houses rapidly began to appear, tea continued to be the favored drink in the New World until 1773, when the colonists revolted against a heavy tax on tea imposed by King George III. The revolt, known as the Boston Tea Party, would forever change the American drinking preference to coffee.

Plantations Around the World

As demand for the beverage continued to spread, there was fierce competition to cultivate coffee outside of Arabia. 

The Dutch finally got seedlings in the latter half of the 17th century. Their first attempts to plant them in India failed, but they were successful with their efforts in Batavia, on the island of Java in what is now Indonesia.  

The plants thrived and soon the Dutch had a productive and growing trade in coffee. They then expanded the cultivation of coffee trees to the islands of Sumatra and Celebes.

Coming to the Americas

In 1714, the Mayor of Amsterdam presented a gift of a young coffee plant to King Louis XIV of France. The King ordered it to be planted in the Royal Botanical Garden in Paris. In 1723, a young naval officer, Gabriel de Clieu obtained a seedling from the King's plant. Despite a challenging voyage — complete with horrendous weather, a saboteur who tried to destroy the seedling, and a pirate attack — he managed to transport it safely to Martinique.  

Once planted, the seedling not only thrived, but it’s credited with the spread of over 18 million coffee trees on the island of Martinique in the next 50 years. Even more incredible is that this seedling was the parent of all coffee trees throughout the Caribbean, South and Central America.

The famed Brazilian coffee owes its existence to Francisco de Mello Palheta, who was sent by the emperor to French Guiana to get coffee seedlings. The French were not willing to share, but the French Governor's wife, captivated by his good looks, gave him a large bouquet of flowers before he left— buried inside were enough coffee seeds to begin what is today a billion-dollar industry.

Missionaries and travelers, traders and colonists continued to carry coffee seeds to new lands, and coffee trees were planted worldwide. Plantations were established in magnificent tropical forests and on rugged mountain highlands. Some crops flourished, while others were short-lived. New nations were established on coffee economies. Fortunes were made and lost. By the end of the 18th century, coffee had become one of the world's most profitable export crops. After crude oil, coffee is the most sought commodity in the world .

Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages. Some claim it is the most widely consumed liquid in the world aside from water.

Coffee is more than a beverage, however. It is a memory, an anticipation, a lifetime of consoling moments of modest pleasure woven into our lives.

Coffee’s success as a beverage undoubtedly is owing both to the caffeine it harbors and to its sensory pleasure. Coffee lovers come to associate the energizing lift of the caffeine with the richness and aroma of the beverage that delivers it.

Coffee is produced from the seeds of a small red (sometimes yellow) fruit that grows on plants halfway in size between shrub and tree. The process that turns these seeds into beverage is a long and complex process, perhaps the most complex process associated with any major beverage.

It is also a very labor intensive process involving a vast intercontinental collaboration that starts with the coffee grower, moves from there to the picker, then to the mill workers who meticulously remove the fruit and dry the beans, then to those who clean and grade the beans, to those who roast them, to those consumers and baristas who finally grind the beans and prepare the beverage. Every act along the way can be performed either with passion and precision or with careless shoddiness. It is the cumulative quality of all of these creative contributions that together make the difference between a lackluster cup and a fine and distinctive one.

Essay on Evolution of Coffee:

Coffee is a mild stimulating popular drink all over the world. It was first seen in the districts of Kaffa, Ethiopia. Thus, the name coffee has been given. Later on, it was transported to differ­ent parts of the world. The geographical distribution of coffee cultivation, however, had experienced several changes.

Earlier, Arabian countries had superiority in famous Mocha coffee cultivation. But after the introduction of coffee in West Indies the Arabian supremacy did not last long. The colonial rulers —specially the Dutch—tried coffee plantations in their colonies. Gradually, East Indies and, later on, Brazil, became outstanding producers of coffee.

Essay on Types of Coffee :

According to nature, characteristics and geographical distribution, coffee plants are of three types:

(a) Coffea Robusta:

Mostly grows on lowlands of African plateaus. It contributes 15- 20% of global output.

(b) Coffea Arabica:

According to volume of production and popularity, it is the most important and contributes 70-80% of global output. It grows in the slopes of the highlands.

(c) Coffea-Liberica:

Inferior grade coffee, contributes only 5-10% of global output and grows in Africa.

Essay on Geographical Conditions of Coffee :

(a) Physical conditions:

(i) Temperature:

Coffee grows in warm climate. An average temperature between 20°-27° C is ideal for coffee trees. Low temperature, particularly frost, is harmful to coffee plants.

(ii) Rainfall:

As a tropical crop, it requires moderate to high annual rainfall —be­tween 150-275 cm.

(iii) Inter-culture:

Coffee is a shade-loving plant. To save coffee plants from scorching heat, banana and other plants are also cultivated.

(iv) Soils:

Like tea, coffee also grows well in well-drained soil where no water logging occurs. Iron and potash content of the soil increase coffee productivity.

(b) Economic conditions:

(i) Labour:

Coffee cultivation is a labour-intensive activity. Growing, collecting, processing require huge labour.

(ii) Capital:

Plantation of coffee is a capital-intensive activity. It requires huge capital,

(iii) Transport:

Good transport network is a prime requisite, otherwise export may suffer.

(iv) International Market:

Coffee is cultivated for overseas market. Any price fluctua­tion may hamper cultivation badly.

Essay on Geographical Distribution of Coffee :

Coffee cultivation is essentially confined in tropical and sub-tropical regions within 20° North and South latitudes.

Altogether, four geographical regions are famous for coffee produc­tion:

(a) South America:

Comprising countries like Brazil, Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador and Peru. This region contributes more than 70% of global production.

(b) S.E. Asia:

Comprising countries like Indonesia, India, etc.

(c) Africa:

Comprising Kenya, Uganda, Congo, etc.

(d) Caribbean region:

Comprising Mexico, Guatemala, etc.

Brazil is the largest coffee-producer and exporter in the world. Coffee export immensely influences its national economy. In 1996-97, the country produced 1.37 million tons — 22% of global production. The area under coffee production is highest in the world—nearly 2 million hectares.

Coffee cultivation is very old in Brazil, started way back in 1774. Since then the country has been able to retain its top position in the production and export of coffee. Various factors favoured coffee plantation in Brazil.

Some of the important factors are:

(i) Volcanic Terrarosa soil.

(ii) High temperature and rainfall throughout the year.

(iii) Good drainage system.

(iv) Cheap labour and good transportation network.

(v) Vast international market and export facilities.

The major producing districts are Sao Paolo, Parana, Expirito, Santos and Minas Gerais.

Coffee Growing Regions

Most of the Brazilian coffee estates are large. Huge amount of capital and bulk of the labour are directly involved in this industry. Any disaster—either crop failure or export mishap — may directly hamper Brazil’s national economy.

To combat this problem, Brazil adopted a unique policy — Valorisation. In this system, excess crop is either destroyed or dumped in order to maintain a steady international demand. Efforts are made to regulate supply to maintain inter­national price status quo.

The recurrence of crop failure, attacks of pests, soil erosion, low productivity and age-old plantations are some of the chronic problems of Brazilian coffee industry. Quality of Brazilian coffee suffers when more emphasis is give on quantity of production.

2. Columbia:

Columbia is the second-largest coffee producing country. In 1996-97, it pro­duced .75 million tons or 14% of the global output. Columbian coffee is predominantly of high quality.

Volcanic fertile soil, well-drained mountain slopes of Andes and favourable climate provide facilities for coffee cultivation. The producing areas are Bogota, Medellin, Manizales and Tolima.

Columbia is a poor country. Coffee exports earn a sizable revenue to the national economy. Here, coffee estates are smaller in size to Brazil’s.

3. Indonesia:

Indonesia is the third-largest coffee-producing country in the world. In 1996- 97, the country produced nearly .48 million tons or 7.2% of the global coffee production. During colonial period, Dutch planters first started coffee cultivation. Sumatra and Java islands are famous for coffee production.

India is the seventh-largest coffee-producing country, accounting for nearly 3.5% of global production. In 1996-97, the country produced nearly .19 million tons in 25 million hectares of land. Coffee production in India is overwhelmingly concentrated in the southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. India exports some amount of its coffee production.

Essay on Other Producing Countries of Coffee :

Among the other important producing countries Ivory coast, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia in Africa; China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Thailand in Asia and Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador in Central America.

Essay on International Trade of Coffee :

Among the exporting countries, Brazil is the undisputed leader, followed by Columbia, Mexico, Uganda, Kenya, Indonesia, India, etc.

Important importing countries are U.S.A., Japan, France, Germany, U.K., Russia, etc..
