EBSCO Open Dissertations
EBSCO Open Dissertations makes electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) more accessible to researchers worldwide. The free portal is designed to benefit universities and their students and make ETDs more discoverable.
Increasing Discovery & Usage of ETD Research
EBSCO Open Dissertations is a collaboration between EBSCO and BiblioLabs to increase traffic and discoverability of ETD research. You can join the movement and add your theses and dissertations to the database, making them freely available to researchers everywhere while increasing traffic to your institutional repository.
EBSCO Open Dissertations extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present.
How Does EBSCO Open Dissertations Work?
Your ETD metadata is harvested via OAI and integrated into EBSCO’s platform, where pointers send traffic to your IR.
EBSCO integrates this data into their current subscriber environments and makes the data available on the open web via opendissertations.org .

- Available as a book which is sold generally
- Available sold by specialized vendors (mainly in North America)

Abstract: Enabling robots to perform practical tasks in the real world requires that they be equipped with a general sense of geometric intelligence. This thesis aims to (i) understand components of geometric intelligence that are missing from current systems and (ii) propose techniques to close some of these gaps. The developed insights and techniques enable new capabilities in robotic manipulation, focusing on rigid object rearrangement tasks in real, unmodeled scenes.
First, I will discuss how the learned features of an equivariant neural field, trained offline to perform 3D reconstruction from point clouds, can be re-purposed as a representation for data-efficient manipulation with unseen objects in out-of-distribution poses. This is achieved by casting skill imitation as aligning coordinate frames detected near task-relevant object parts. The neural field representation encodes the relevant parts to detect using a few task demonstrations and supports localizing frames near the corresponding parts on new shapes. I will also present applications of our neural descriptor fields for capturing pairwise relations between object parts and chaining such relations to perform multi-step tasks. Next, I will show how rearrangement among multi-object scenes leads to additional challenges, such as generalizing to diverse scene layouts and covering the multi-modal space of rearrangement solutions. I will discuss how predicting combined object-scene 3D point clouds by de-noising relative object poses with diffusion models naturally handles these unique challenges. Finally, I will share recent results on learning closed-loop visuomotor policies that support rearrangement task execution with increased reliability and robustness by combining simulation-based reinforcement learning (sim-to-real) and 3D reconstruction (real-to-sim).

Successful Final Dissertation Defense - Congratulations to Adrian Novio!
Doctoral Program | Student Spotlights
Congratulations to Adrian Novio who on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, successfully defended his dissertation. The title of Adrian’s dissertation is: ANALYZING THROUGHPUT RATE: ENHANCING DEVELOPMENTAL MATH STUDENTS' ACADEMIC PROGRESS.
Developmental math courses have long been considered a barrier for students, in particular minority and low-income students who are disproportionately enrolled in developmental courses. Drawing upon Vygotsky’s (1978) social development theory and ability group tracking, this study examines changes in throughput rates (i.e., completion and advancement) in these courses as a result of a developmental math program redesign. Specifically, this study looks at how throughput rates changed during and after the redesign for a sample of first-time, full-time undergraduate students at a 2-year college. Using data from nearly 13,000 students spanning nine years, the study found that the developmental math program redesign improved throughput rates for all students, regardless of sex, race, socioeconomic status, or degree of study; and that these improvements were particularly stark for Black and Hispanic students. Findings will inform curricular redesign efforts in other developmental areas as well as help shift discussions of how course and curriculum planning at the post-secondary level are contributing to unequal outcomes and provide potential models for a progressive path forward.

Tissue-encoded Design Principles of Host Defense
Inflammatory diseases have been rising in incidence over the past few decades and are a result of inappropriate activation of tissue-resident immunity. This inappropriate activation can be derived from any number of cell types, including inputs from non-canonical immune cells such as epithelial cells. In this thesis, we investigated tissue metabolism and inflammation across different temporal and spatial scales using a unique combination of metabolomics, mathematical modeling, metabolic assays, and chemical characterization. Our aim was to protect against inflammation-induced tissue damage and improve clinical outcomes. Thus, we studied A) chronic local tissue inflammation using a colitis model (Chapter 1) and B) acute systemic inflammation using a sepsis model (Chapter 2). In each disease, we studied changes in tissue architecture and the resulting cross-talk among cell types in the microenvironment. In colitis, we found that upon release during tissue damage, IL-18 launches a unique metabolic program in macrophages that 1) exhibits bistable and hysteretic behavior, 2) provides protective memory against inflammatory challenge, and 3) relies on positive feedback with intestinal epithelial cells to maintain the program. In our mouse model of bacterial sepsis, we performed liver tissue metabolomics. We identified a class of metabolites called branched-chain ketoacids (BCKAs) that are released during systemic inflammation and serve as endogenous antioxidants that neutralize extracellular peroxides. BCKA supplementation thus reduces tissue damage and increases survival rates by more than double. Through this thesis, we show tissue-intrinsic mechanisms that 1) organize a positive feedback loops among cells to establish protective memory against inflammation and 2) secrete endogenous antioxidants to limit pathogenic extracellular oxidants induced by inflammation without quenching bactericidal intracellular oxidants.

Most dissertations are 100 to 300 pages in length. All dissertations should be divided into appropriate sections, and long dissertations may need chapters, main divisions, and even subdivisions. Students should keep in mind that GSAS and many departments deplore overlong and wordy dissertations.
MIT's DSpace contains more than 58,000 theses completed at MIT dating as far back as the mid 1800's. Theses in this collection have been scanned by the MIT Libraries or submitted in electronic format by thesis authors. Since 2004 all new Masters and Ph.D. theses are scanned and added to this collection after degrees are awarded.
The dissertation is a document in which a student presents his or her research and findings to meet the requirements of the doctorate. It is a substantial scholarly product that represents the student's own work. The content and form of the dissertation are guided by the dissertation committee and the standards of the student's discipline.
