With the Creative Destruction Lab and a focus on self-development as a crucial component of leadership growth, The University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management offers those lucky enough to be admitted access to an unparalleled array of academic and extracurricular opportunities.

However, as Toronto continues to grow as a global hub for tech-savvy entrepreneurs and executives alike, Rotman’s highly-diverse MBA program has become even more sought after , making it more challenging than ever to secure a spot at this world-class business school.

That’s why we’ve prepared this guide to help you use your Rotman admissions essays to stand out. We’ve rounded up our best tips and links to Rotman MBA sample essays to ensure you give your Haas application your best shot.

1. Who is Rotman looking for?

“ We believe that exposure to a rich diversity of viewpoints makes for a superior learning experience, and pride ourselves on building a diverse class of exceptional individuals who will go on to make the School proud as professionals and alumni.” Rotman Admissions

Every year, Rotman’s admissions team selected 275 students for the honor of joining their prestigious MBA program. With a focus on academic and career excellence as well as on diversity, Rotman admits to the Class of 2024 had an average of 4 years of work experience and GMAT scores of 674 (slightly down from 678 last year).

Nonetheless, Rotman looks beyond demonstrated brain power and seeks to compose a diverse class of leaders from around the world.

According to Rotman’s admissions team, here’s what they look for in applicants:

If this sounds like a community in which you’d be right at home, you’ll first have to prove you’ve got what it takes by successfully answering Rotman’s open-ended admissions essay questions.

TOP TIP : Keep in mind that in addition to a video essay, Rotman has also added a short written component that applicants must answer after submitting the formal application. Learn more about what this new challenge entails here .

2. How should I answer the Rotman essay questions?

According to Rotman’s admissions team, “Our admitted students stand out by doing interesting things with their personal and professional lives — something we describe as the ‘spike factor’; what are the things that you have done in your life that demonstrate Passion/Grit/Resilience/Innovation/Drive/Ambition and more? This can cross all or any aspects of life outside of work – hobbies, volunteer activities, awards, entrepreneurial ventures, sports and the arts.”

Choosing to retain their questions from last year, Rotman’s application is unique in just how broad the essay question is. We believe this is an excellent opportunity for candidates of all backgrounds to really show off what makes them unique.

2.1. Essay 1 Tips

Essay: Our admitted students stand out by doing interesting things with their personal and professional lives — something we describe as the ‘spike factor’; what are the things that you have done in your life that demonstrate Passion/ Grit/ Resilience/ Innovation/ Drive/ Ambition and more? This can cross all or any aspects of life outside of work – hobbies, volunteerism, awards, entrepreneurial ventures, sports and the arts. We believe that exposure to a rich diversity of viewpoints makes for a superior learning experience, and pride ourselves on building a diverse class of exceptional individuals who will go on to make the School proud as professionals and alumni.

Explain your spike factor (something unique about yourself) that you believe will contribute to the Rotman community and is aligned with Rotman values. (up to 500 words)*  Optional – Please upload 1-3 of your ‘spikiest’ pictures to the supplemental items section of your application here. Note: Your photos must be uploaded as a single PDF.

Though the wording has changed slightly, Rotman has continued to ask candidates to share their spike factor in their essay, retaining the strong focus in this essay on connecting your background with the school’s values.

For this reason, before starting your essay, we suggest you take a look at Rotman’s values , to make sure you have a clear understanding of what drives the Rotman community.

One of the hallmarks of Rotman is the diversity of its class and of the different educational formats employed in the MBA (from lecture to lab to experiential learning, Rotman truly offers it all). This means that each student not only needs to be able to successfully navigate the MBA’s structure, they must also contribute to their classmates’ learning both inside the classroom and in the Rotman community at large.

Rotman’s strikes at the core of this ideal, giving candidates the chance to explore their values. More importantly, it gives you the chance to show how you can add value to Rotman’s diverse student body in a way no one else can.

This essay should show Rotman who you are and what makes you tick.

You might choose to focus on one of the characteristics listed in the question, though this is not strictly necessary.

When considering how to approach this essay, first take a look back at your personal and professional experiences to identify the “tipping points” in your life. What has led you to the point you are at now? What has made you YOU?

Then, describe not only what these experiences were but also how they impacted who you are and your life choices. Given the number of photos you are allowed to submit to complement your essay, we suggest you focus on 1, 2 or 3 examples in your essay.

This essay allows you to describe your personal and extraprofessional examples (though you can also work in a few professional examples too!) to show Rotman a complete view of who you are as a candidate. Make sure to connect your examples to Rotman’s values in some way in order to fully answer the question.

With the narrower focus of this question this year, however, make sure to choose a single theme and follow it all the way through. Jumping around without logic or connection will cause this essay to miss the mark.

Finally, don’t forget that Rotman also requires a video essay as part of its MBA application. Make sure to plan ahead to ensure you do your best!

Showcase Your “Spike Factor” in Rotman MBA Application Essays

Rotman Application Essay Tips, 2024-2025

Rotman is all about “spike factor,” asking you to use 500 words to explain your “spike” and offering you the option to upload up to three of your “spikiest” pictures to support your claims. On campus, you can feel the excitement and positive momentum of this program firsthand. From the juxtaposition of old and new buildings woven seamlessly together to create the best of tradition and innovation, to the entrepreneurial opportunities provided by the Creative Destruction Lab and the transformative experiences offered through the Self-Development Lab, Rotman is a school steeped in spike factor!

This essay should be fun to answer, providing you with a creative way to show Rotman what makes you a unique and valuable addition to their community.

Rotman provides this introduction to consider for its essay prompt:

Our admitted students stand out by doing interesting things with their personal and professional lives — something we describe as the ‘spike factor’; what are the things that you have done in your life that demonstrate Passion/ Grit/ Resilience/ Innovation/ Drive/ Ambition and more? This can cross all or any aspects of life outside of work – hobbies, volunteerism, awards, entrepreneurial ventures, sports and the arts. We believe that exposure to a rich diversity of viewpoints makes for a superior learning experience, and pride ourselves on building a diverse class of exceptional individuals who will go on to make the School proud as professionals and alumni.

Written essay

Explain your spike factor (something unique about yourself) that you believe will contribute to the rotman community and is aligned with rotman values. (up to 500 words), optional – please upload 1-3 of your ‘spikiest’ pictures to the supplemental items section of your application here. note: your photos must be uploaded as a single pdf..

When tackling this MBA essay prompt, the key is to showcase your signature “spike factor.” This is your opportunity to stand out by highlighting the extraordinary qualities, experiences, or passions that define you. To begin, ask yourself, What drives me? What experiences have shaped my personal and professional life? Have I demonstrated Passion, Grit, Resilience, Innovation, Drive, or Ambition in a way that others might not have? You might also think of this like “the Tokyo test”—something we have heard recruiters mention: Is this person interesting enough that I’d be happy sitting next to them on a flight to Tokyo?

Consider the moments when you went beyond the expected. Perhaps you led a significant project at work, overcame a personal challenge, or pursued a hobby or volunteer activity with remarkable dedication. Did you start an entrepreneurial venture, champion a cause, or master a skill that required consistent effort and resilience? What do these experiences say about you, and how have they shaped your outlook?

As you reflect, think about how these experiences align with Rotman’s values and how they will contribute to the diverse and dynamic Rotman community. You might ask yourself, How do my experiences reflect my ability to add value to group discussions and collaborative projects? In what ways can I bring a unique perspective to the classroom? How will my background enrich the learning environment for my peers? It might be helpful to use a CAR (Challenge/Action/Result) model as you provide support for the examples you share.

If you choose to include photos, ensure that they visually capture the essence of your story — whether it’s a snapshot of you leading a team, engaging in a passion project, or achieving a personal milestone. These images should complement your narrative, adding a dimension to your application.

Remember, this essay is not just about listing achievements but also about telling a compelling story that demonstrates why you are an exceptional candidate who will thrive at Rotman and contribute meaningfully to its community.

Video interview

Required video interview (2 questions) with a new timed written response component (10 minutes in length). applicants will receive an email within 24 hours of applying with a link to the video component. .

Advice, tips and insights from the admissions dream team., table of contents, unleash your uniqueness: how to tackle the rotman mba essay “spike factor” question.

  • By Melissa Jones

rotman mba spike factor essay

When you are applying to an MBA program, it’s crucial to stand out from the crowd. Business schools seek diverse and dynamic cohorts, so they ask candidates to showcase their distinctive qualities and potential contributions to the community. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto takes this a step further with its “spike factor” question.

In this article, we explain how to tackle this unique Rotman MBA essay question and align your spike with Rotman’s values to set yourself up for admissions success.

The spike factor question is the only Rotman essay required. However, applicants will be required to submit a required video response to two interview questions. Rotman also requires candidates to submit a timed, 10-minute written response component. Applicants will receive an email within 24 hours of submitting their application with further instructions and a link to the video component. (See our advice on how to ace the videos .)

The “Spike Factor” Essay Question

Explain your spike factor (something unique about yourself) that you believe will contribute to the Rotman community and is aligned with Rotman values. How will your spike factor help you succeed as an MBA student and beyond? (hard cutoff at 500 words

The Rotman School coined the term “the spike factor” to describe something extraordinary or unique about an applicant. It’s an aspect of your background, upbringing, experience or personality that sets you apart from other applicants. It’s a characteristic that makes you a valuable addition to the Rotman community. So, how do you identify and explain your own spike factor in the Rotman MBA essay?

Self-Reflection

To start, look inward. Reflect on your upbringing, life experiences, personal journey and professional accomplishments. What sets you apart?  As Rotman asks, “What are the things that you have done in your life that demonstrate passion, grit, resilience, innovation, drive, ambition, and more?”

This can encompass all or any aspect of life outside of work—volunteerism, awards, entrepreneurial ventures, sports and the arts. It could be an exceptional skill, a transformative experience or a hobby you’re devoted to that defines you.

Don’t limit yourself to traditional notions of success. Your spike factor doesn’t have to be a world-changing invention; it can be a personal story that demonstrates resilience, adaptability or creativity.

Alignment with Rotman Values

Rotman values qualities such as diversity, leadership, innovation and a commitment to making a positive impact. Consider how your spike factor aligns with these values and connect them in your Rotman essay. For instance, if your unique experience involves leading a diverse team through a challenging project, you can emphasize your leadership and commitment to fostering diversity.

Show, Don’t Tell

Don’t just describe your spike factor; show how it has influenced your actions and decisions. Use specific examples that highlight the impact of your uniqueness. Instead of stating, “I have a passion for sustainability,” share a story of how you initiated a successful sustainability project and its impact or outcomes.

Note that Rotman invites you to upload your  “spikiest” pictures. Although this is optional, I strongly suggest that you include some. Images create a more personal, memorable and longer-lasting impression. Note that images should be combined into a single PDF and uploaded to the supplemental items section of the application.

Community Contribution

Demonstrate how your spike factor will contribute to the Rotman community. Will it enrich classroom discussions, inspire your peers, contribute to a student club or enhance the learning environment? Highlight the potential ripple effects of your uniqueness within the school.

Beyond the MBA

Remember that Rotman is interested in your long-term potential. The admissions committee seeks to build a diverse class of exceptional individuals “who will go on to make the School proud as professionals and alumni.”

Explain how your spike factor will continue to be an asset in your post-MBA career and/or community involvement. Will it open doors, drive innovation or help you make a lasting impact in your profession or volunteer work?

Sample Approach

Let’s illustrate these principles with a hypothetical example. Suppose your spike factor is a background in competitive ballroom dancing. Here’s how you might tackle the question:

“My spike factor is my background in competitive ballroom dancing. [Add more details on your dancing here; for example, how long you’ve been dancing, the cities around the world where you’ve competed and any competitions you may have won] . At first glance, this pursuit may seem unrelated to business. However, I believe it aligns perfectly with Rotman’s values of diversity, leadership and innovation.

In ballroom dancing, I learned the art of leading and following — skills that are invaluable in collaborative work environments. Dancing in front of large audiences around the world honed my communication and presentation skills as well as my confidence. I believe all three will contribute to vibrant classroom discussions at Rotman.

Teaching ballroom dance to various age groups, including senior citizens, has given me joy. It’s a tremendous feeling to give back and see people’s smiling faces. Teaching dance also honed my leadership skills. I will use this skillset at Rotman in my working groups, leading the [X club—perhaps related to your post-MBA goal]. I will also  deploy these skills on my non-profit boards and charities fellowship through the Rotman Onboard Fellowship Program.

Beyond the classroom, my spike factor has the potential to make a lasting impact. As someone who grew up in an underprivileged family, it’s been important for me to give back to those in similar situations. That’s why I volunteered for five years with Save the Children as [x]. Based on that experience, I envision organizing and performing in an annual “Rotman Dance for Diversity” event. This event will celebrate Rotman’s multicultural community and raise funds for underprivileged students in Toronto. It will promote diversity and showcase Rotman’s commitment to innovative and inclusive initiatives.

In my future career as a business leader in [x] , I see my ballroom dancing background as a unique asset. I routinely rehearsed about 15 hours per week, enduring several injuries and training a new substitute dance partner at the last minute before a performance. This has taught me discipline, perseverance and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances — all qualities essential in today’s dynamic business world. I plan to leverage this background to foster creativity, teamwork and adaptability within my future organizations.

My spike factor is not just about dancing; it’s about a mindset of diversity, leadership and innovation that I am eager to bring to the Rotman community and carry forward into a successful career.”

An essay such as this could be supplemented with a photo of dancing in a competition somewhere around the world, one leading dance classes and one from volunteering at Save the Children.

Final Thoughts

Think of an idea that would stand out from the crowd and make you memorable. If you are stumped, speak to friends and family members, who might mention something you hadn’t thought of or didn’t think was unique.

Approach this essay with authenticity, clarity and a forward-thinking perspective. Nailing down and clearly communicating your spike factor portrays you as someone Rotman will want in their next class. Moreover, it sets the stage for a transformative MBA experience and a successful career that resonates with the Rotman Schools’s values.

Rotman's MBA Spike Factor essay

rotman mba spike factor essay

The University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management stands for “diversity, excellence, integrity, and respect”. These values frame the school’s purpose of adding value to business and society. They are also what the AdCom looks for in prospective students.

One of the ways in which the AdCom tries to understand how you embody these values is through Rotman’s famous “Spike Factor” essay.

The Question

Our admitted students stand out by doing interesting things with their personal and professional lives — something we describe as the ‘spike factor’; what are the things that you have done in your life that demonstrate Passion / Grit / Resilience / Innovation / Drive / Ambition and more? This can cross all or any aspects of life outside of work – hobbies, volunteerism, awards, entrepreneurial ventures, sports and the arts. We believe that exposure to a rich diversity of viewpoints makes for a superior learning experience, and pride ourselves on building a diverse class of exceptional individuals who will go on to make the School proud as professionals and alumni.

Explain your spike factor (something unique about yourself) that you believe will contribute to the Rotman community and is aligned with Rotman values. (up to 500 words)*

Optional – Please upload 1-3 of your ‘spikiest’ pictures to the supplemental items section of your application here. Note: Your photos must be uploaded as a single PDF.

The prompt starts by stating that every admitted Rotman student has done interesting things with their career or personal life. Note the term ‘interesting’: the story you share in this essay doesn’t necessarily have to be your biggest achievement. Your “spike factor" is simply something that’s unique about yourself.

Given that diversity of viewpoints is the cornerstone of the Rotman MBA program, this essay is all about presenting how your unique background, motivations, and goals will improve the Rotman community.

How to Identify your Spike Factor

It’s not easy to think of a ‘spike’. Here are a few places you can start:

What makes you tick : This could be your biggest passion, personal or professional. How did it start, and how have you pursued it since?

Rising to a challenge : Was there a time when you had to overcome a challenge by demonstrating resilience? What does that say about you?

Rebounding:  When did you rebound from challenging circumstances to demonstrate your resilience and determination?

Ambition to achieve : You could discuss your drive to achieve a certain milestone, professional successes, or how you built something of your own.

Making a difference : This could be at your workplace, in your personal life, or in the community. How have you driven positive change around you?

Values : Did you stand up for yourself or others in a difficult situation? Was there an incident that challenged your values? How do your values impact your life at work and beyond?

Innovation : Have you thought out of the box to create something innovative? How have you disrupted the status quo?

The qualities of “ Passion / Grit / Resilience / Innovation / Drive / Ambition ” mentioned in the prompt are good markers to start with, but don’t limit yourself only to these. Think of qualities that align with the Rotman mission and values, and how they will help you fit into the school’s community.

Don’t worry if your essay is work-centric. We’ve worked with many applicants who have written stories about what they want to accomplish professionally and what inspired them. But remember, not every story can be your ‘spike’ factor. For example, completing a difficult project at work is not a unique experience. Instead, think of stories where you differentiated yourself from others by demonstrating one of the qualities above.

rotman mba spike factor essay

How to Write About your Spike Factor

A good way to write about your spike factor is by connecting it to your purpose or mission that you want to achieve at Rotman and beyond. For example, “My mission is to develop sustainable strategies for the clothing industry to minimize its impact on the environment and combat fast fashion.”

Now, that’s something you want to accomplish, but it doesn’t necessarily speak about your spike factor. So, use 1-2 anecdotes to best depict the values, motivations, and passions that make up your ‘spike’. Connect these to your mission. For example, “My spike factor is communicating change effectively. In my previous role, I was the lead drafter in the Workplace Safety Accord for better labor regulations in the countries my company sourced garments from. That’s where I realized I wanted to scale my impact.”

Don’t go overboard with the number of stories or ‘spikes’ you want to write about. You should aim to go deep, not wide. Your stories should follow a sensible, easy-to-follow structure and be related to your core narrative.

Use the SCAR structure to frame your story clearly:

Situation:  Describe what the circumstances were.

Challenge:  What was the problem or task you faced?

Action:  Describe your actions in response to this task.

Result:  What was the outcome of your actions? What did you learn from this experience?

Don’t forget the second part of the prompt! Weave Rotman into the essay by discussing how you will bring your spike factor to Rotman and your post-MBA career. Not only should your spike factor enrich the Rotman community, but it should also demonstrate your leadership potential in the long term.

Handy Tips:

The school has recently changed the Spike Factor essay’s word limit from 1000 to 500, so be mindful of space. Choose quality over quantity and write a story that clearly outlines your spike factor and the skills you developed from it.

You don’t have to start your essay with “My spike factor is …..”! Build out your story and see where it fits most clearly.

Show, don’t tell. Instead of simply describing your spike factor, demonstrate it through your previous experiences and actions.

Review the school’s mission and values. It’s good practice to speak with alumni and current students to get an insider’s perspective on the Rotman culture. Use these insights in your essay.

What about the pictures?

Pictures are optional, but we recommend that you use them, given the shorter word limit. You may add 1-3 pictures.

Adding visuals to your essay helps support your stories by giving the AdCom something more to remember them by. Reflect on which pictures will clearly validate your story and spike factor. Rotman understands that you’re not always ready with a camera in your peak moments, so don’t worry if they're not the most artsy or unconventional. What’s important is that they are authentic to your core message.

Rotman MBA Winning Sample Essay – 1

Rotman essay 1: please upload 1-3 of your ‘spikiest’ pictures and use the essay to tell us why you have chosen these particular images to illustrate your ‘spike factor’ (use up to 1000 words)..

I am a corporate lawyer with seven years of professional exp and currently working with Deloitte. At Deloitte, I independently handle the Public Sector Industry projects as a part of Deloitte India corporate legal team. After undergraduation, I have crafted a successful career for myself while working with some of the biggest MNC’s and international clients. But things were not always like this, there was a point in time when being independent was a far fetched dream.

When I was eight years old, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which rendered me bedridden and with limited movement for six years. Back in the day, the only known cure for my condition was regular penicillin injections which was an excruciating and painful procedure, to say the least.

In these six years, I was bedridden for the most part and could barely make any friends or enjoy any of the childhood pleasure. The only pleasure I had to indulge myself in was watching television. Given my lack of social life and inability to participate in physical activities, I developed a deep love for movies and television. Watching movies was the only pass time I had, I would often mimic dialogues, lip sync songs and hoped that one day I would get out of my state and be able to do these things in theatre. This was the beginning of my dream and passion for doing theatre one day.

At the age of 14 years, my condition improved and I started a new chapter of my life. I moved to a new city for my bachelor’s degree, and the first thing I did was to join the theatre club on my campus. The first picture I have is of my crew and I performing my first stage appearance in front of our college crowd. That performance was the accumulation of many dreams fulfilled and my first spikiest moment in life. I remember vividly how nervous I was for that performance and how it felt to be appreciated and cheered upon. From that day onwards I never looked back, the appreciation fueled me, and over the next four years I took part in more in 20 events, performed in full-fledged plays in front of crowds of 1000s of people and travelled across the country for various performances. These public performances gave me the confidence to face the crowd and developed skills such as public speaking, improvisation and people management which I could never experience during my early childhood.

My second picture is a collage of all my enjoyable and cherishable moments accumulated while travelling more than ten countries. In today’s globe tottering generation of millennials, travelling may not be the spikiest thing to do and highlight, but for me, it used to be a distant dream.  Summer and winter vacations are a kids paradise, and that’s all they look forward to every year. All my friends went travelling with their families, came back and shared their adventures year after year. But, I was one of those unfortunate bedridden kids who dreaded vacations and desperately waited for them to get over so that my friends would come back. I hated the feeling of being alone during vacations and also my family was not able to go anywhere due to my regular treatment needs. But now I am cured and earning independently, I have made it a point to catch up on all those memories which I couldn’t form during my childhood or the moment my family sacrificed to stay with me. Since getting a Job in 2011, I have been to some of the most exotic places in the world like Bali, Thailand, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, Hawaii, Iceland, Norway, Rome, Paris and Philippines.

So yes, travelling is more than just being a spike factor for me. Theatre and travelling both are more about giving myself the confidence to achieve my dreams and prove that nothing is out of bounds if you have the motivation to work towards it with sheer dedication and passion. This brings me to my third picture which is about giving back to society and where I share my journey with similar unfortunate kids to give them the motivation I had.

I regularly volunteer with NGO’s, and social work experiences have changed my whole perspective. Overtime, I realized that teaching was a very small part of my social work initiatives. The most beautiful thing about all teaching in NGO in my early years was that I changed. I began to care – really care about them because I can connect to their feelings. Before getting cured, all I cared was about myself and used to ask stupid questions as – will I fit in society? Will I be able to lead a life like normal kids? But with these kids, I forget about me and care for them overtakes my sensations. Since I have been through the hardship, I can connect with them. I know getting a good education is only a way out of the hardships of life. I have always used my story to motivate them. I believe teaching them Science or English is important but what’s more important is to inspire and motivate these kids to chase their dreams.

In Summary, these three pictures represents the most significant aspects my dreams and my life in a nutshell. It hasn’t been easy so far, but after all these experience I have never been afraid to dream bigger and better. Now I aspire to learn from the best institutes like Rotman and become a business leader who can not only lead but also inspire others to dream big in life. I can bring not only diverse and spiky experiences to class, but also a true story of grit and motivation to share with my peers.

Rotman MBA Winning Sample Essays -2

Rotman essay 1: please upload 1-3 of your ‘spikiest’ pictures to the supplemental items section of your application here and use the space below to tell us why you have chosen these particular images to illustrate your ‘spike factor’. (up to 1000 words).

There are three aspects of my early childhood life that have left an indelible mark on my life and defined the critical personality traits which have helped me craft a successful career for myself. First is my father’s public-sector job of a civil engineer as a government of India employee. He usually has regular job transfers every 2-3 years, and due to the transferable nature of my father’s job, I grew up in 6 different economically backwards cities spread across the breadth of India. I had to change schools every 2-3 years, made new friends and learned different languages. Second, everyone in my family is an engineer, so I genetically acquired an inquisitive mind which pushed me towards engineering as well. Although early on, my inquisitive mind ensured that I created more problems than I solved but over time I developed problem-solving skills as well, which coupled with my cultural adaptability and language skills made me a perfect fit for consulting world.

After my undergraduate, I joined ZS associates where I have successfully led and contributed to multiple projects. I have worked with various global teams on aspects of sales and marketing for large pharmaceutical companies and acquired significant client facing experience.

I worked on the development of a BI report catering to the analytical requirement for over 300 field sales representatives. The report enabled the users to gain strategic insights from their sales and marketing data, which helped improve their efficiency and increased sales. The project received multiple accolades from the client, an award for my team and myself, which brings to my first picture with my project champions award that I received at my organisation level for driving excellent client service. This is the first picture, which I believe was in recognition of the innovative and out of the box thinking I employed to derive insights for the data analysis. This award not only recognised my skills but also help me fetch my first promotion within the organisation. It was the first award that I received in my professional career and brought me the confidence that I can achieve even higher accolades, and therefore this award and picture are special to me.

My second picture is about an activity which I feel deeply passionate about and love to do whenever I get any free time, i.e. “Baking”. In this picture, I am baking one of my favourite chocolate cake and cookies, on a random Sunday for my friends and family.  Being a complete foodie, I not only like eating different kinds of cuisines but also have a knack for cooking. My mom and her cooking were the inspiration that fueled my interest in cooking, and I started experimenting with different stuff in her kitchen. My uncontrollable desire for sweet and baked goods, compelled me to attempt baking and that’ when I found my passion and a new hobby.

I mostly bake over the weekend where it acts as a retreat from my hectic weekday. Baking not only helps me relax and disconnect from the work week but also teaches me some valuable life lessons. It shows me that little mistakes will blow over, you can accidentally add a little extra flour in the cake mixture which can potentially spoil the cake, but you learn a good lesson for the next time and improve your recipe. Similarly, in life sometimes we tend to beat ourselves up over little things, or little things that we don’t have the power to change, but we should always learn from them and aspire to get better at them. The second important thing I learn from baking is that things do get messy, but if you are patient enough the results are worth the wait, and there is always a sweet reward at the end for all my hard work. It gives me immense pleasure in seeing the smile and happiness, on the faces of my friends and family when they eat my cakes. It reignites my passion for baking and motivates me to help others so that I can bring in joy in their lives as well.

I believe, I have been very fortunate in life and had a comfortable life. My early upbringing in economically backward cities across India left an imprint on my mind which continually reminds me that not everyone is similarly fortunate. This is the third aspect of my early childhood that defines me and the third picture of my story. These experiences motivated me to step-up an NGO named “Gyankunj”, where my team and I help the low-income families in bridging the gap in their kid’s education. So far, we have raised more than INR 300,000 through crowdfunding and received a corporate social responsibility award of INR 100,000 from BAIN India. We are utilising these funds to impart a practical-oriented education to underprivileged children and conducted individual sessions to train the kids beyond their regular coursework. One important thing I noticed during my early social work experiences is that these kids rarely have knowledge and access to appropriate real-life role models to look up to. To bridge this gap, we created a concept under which we bring in high profile speakers from positions in different fields like civil services, engineering, bankers, etc., to motivate the kids.

Working at Gyankunj brings in the sense of self-satisfaction from giving it back to the society. It also helps me develop a sense of responsibility, ownership and leadership qualities that I can even use in my professional growth. In fact, spending time at Gyankunj helps me be a better leader at work too. I believe that all my professional and personal journey along with my diverse experience across consulting, baking and social work have given me a lot of learnings about patients, teamwork and leadership which I can share both in-class and out of class with my peers. The sum total of which makes me a perfect fit for the Rotman MBA class.

Breaking Down the Rotman MBA Application Essays

Essay 1: Our admitted students stand out by doing interesting things with their personal and professional lives — something we describe as the ‘spike factor’; what are the things that you have done in your life that demonstrate Passion/ Grit/ Resilience/ Innovation/ Drive/ Ambition and more?

The very first tip, would be checking the value system of any school, for Rotman: www.rotman.utoronto.ca/Connect/AboutRotman/OurValues

Rotman is distinguished by its class diversity and its use of various educational methods within the MBA program, encompassing lectures, labs, and experiential learning. More on the insides or Rotman later in this blog so you can understand the curriculum better. As a result, every student not only needs to adeptly navigate the MBA’s structure but also actively contribute to their classmates’ education both within the classroom and the broader Rotman community. This aspect aligns with Rotman’s fundamental vision, offering applicants the opportunity to explore their own values. More importantly, it allows candidates to demonstrate how they can uniquely enrich Rotman’s diverse student body by bringing their distinctive contributions.

The objective of this essay is to present to Rotman who you are as an individual and what sets you apart. While you have the option to focus on any of the characteristics mentioned in the question, it is not mandatory. To begin, reflect on your personal and professional journey to pinpoint the crucial moments that have shaped your life. Examine the bell curve of your career and mark the points that have brought you to your current position. It centres around the concept of the “spike factor,” which refers to a person’s primary differentiator, making them stand out or special.

The essay encourages candidates to discuss accomplishments and experiences outside of work that showcase qualities like passion, perseverance, innovation, and diversity-related perspectives. It emphasizes that whatever is highlighted in the essay should align with Rotman’s core values of respect, diversity, excellence, and integrity. The essay, not only should you detail these experiences, but also elaborate on how they have influenced your personal growth and life decisions. Make a bell curve of your career path and analyse the “spike points” and describe the profound impact these moments have had on shaping your character and molding the path you’ve chosen to take

Previously, the essay had a word limit of 1,000 words and optional “spike” photos. However, the updated version now requires candidates to upload these pictures. As there are fewer words available, it’s essential to make use of supporting photos to reinforce the main message of the essay. The images should be chosen thoughtfully to create a lasting impression with the admissions committee and provide nonverbal information to associate with the candidate’s profile

Required Video Interview: Required video interview (2 questions) with a timed written response component (10 minutes in length)

In essence, the purpose of this “essay” application is to showcase your ability to think and express yourself spontaneously, both verbally and in writing. Candidates have no luxury of time to prepare extensively, seek feedback, or revise their responses, as is common with typical application essays, including video ones. Rotman’s approach for the video essay and written accompaniment is designed to reveal your true, unfiltered self. The admissions committee wants to see the real you, believing that “what you see is what you (really) receive.”

Although this may sound intimidating, there’s no need to view it negatively. As a prospective Rotman MBA student, you have valuable qualities to offer. Use this opportunity to demonstrate how you would engage in the classroom, excel in job interviews, and contribute to the school’s community. There is no definitive right answer to this question, unlike other MBA application prompts. The goal is to find the right fit for the program, and it’s essential not to pretend to be someone you’re not during your two years at Rotman. So, be genuine and answer the questions honestly, using your natural tone, voice, and vocabulary. Confidence, authenticity, and being true to yourself matter more than the specific content of your responses.

However, we recommend working on reducing filler words and phrases (such as “um,” “uh,” “like,” and “you know”) as early as possible. By doing so, you’ll be less likely to rely on them during the actual video session. This practice will benefit you not only in this application but also in your future classroom experiences and interviews. So, start retraining yourself now to enhance your communication skills.

What should your video essay show?

Your passion and goals.

Your essays should reflect your passion for your chosen field and your clear career goals. Use specific examples and anecdotes to illustrate how your experiences have shaped your aspirations and how an MBA from Rotman will play a pivotal role in achieving them.

Rotman School of Management Essay Analysis 2021

Rotman Essay Analysis

If you have decided to get an MBA, you would have definitely gone through the long list of B-schools across the world that you can possibly apply to, right? And if Rotman School of Management in Canada is a B-school that you are considering, you might want to learn how to tackle their MBA application essays to get an MBA admit.

In this article, we will discuss the Rotman application essay questions in detail and also provide you with tips on how to showcase your profile to the admissions committee at the B-school.

So, keep your pen and paper handy because you will have a lot of relevant points that you might want to note down.

But before we get into the Rotman essay analysis part, here are a few points that you need to know about the Rotman School of Management.

Getting things straight

If you are looking to do an MBA in Canada, you should know that the Rotman School of Management has set itself apart from the rest of the B-schools there. While other B-schools like the Schulich School of Business and Ivey Business School are great, Rotman has clearly made its mark as the top B-school in Canada.

Imparting knowledge the right way

The Rotman School of Management believes in “integrative thinking” and you will come across this term even on their website.

What does this mean?

All institutions focus on your ability to understand data and on your ability to utilize your intellect when it comes to decision-making. There is nothing wrong with it.

But at Rotman, they believe in using your intuition, creativity and quality when it comes to making a decision. They believe that you need to bring your human part into the whole process.

And with the world that we live in right now and the kind of risk management and decision-making that we all have to do, this way of thinking makes total sense.

What Rotman is looking for

At Rotman, the admissions committee is looking for a well-rounded candidate. “Well-rounded candidate” is an ideal candidate at most of the B-schools.

But what is it that Rotman looks for in a candidate that helps them make the admission decision?

The admissions committee at Rotman looks for candidates who are committed to lifelong learning. While your high GPA and GMAT score showcases your academic potential they are also very keen to know about your leadership potential and the kind of impact that you have created so far.

One of our students, Akshat, who got into Rotman School of Management in 2019 mentioned in one of our live sessions that there is no direct correlation between a candidate’s GMAT score and the MBA admit. He said that he had a batchmate who had a GMAT score in the range of 600-650 and that he also knew of someone who had a 700+ GMAT score but did not make it to the MBA program.

So, when it comes to getting a Rotman MBA admit, you need to understand that there are a lot of factors that could make or break the deal.

What’s in it for you

If you do your MBA at Rotman School of Management, the program will definitely aid in transforming your leadership potential to suit the North American market. This is exactly what they say.

So, if you are looking to be a part of the workforce in Canada, which has a strong economy and offers a good quality of life, Rotman might be the best option for you.

As the B-school is located in Canada, every international student is eligible for a three-year work permit. And this actually makes life a lot easier for students who are investing time and money in their MBA programs.

Moreover, Amazon, Google, Accenture, AtKearney and Bain and Company are among the top companies that hire graduates from Rotman.

Now, let’s look at the actual essay that you need to submit to Rotman while submitting your MBA application.

Rotman School of Management MBA Essay 2020-21

When it comes to the MBA essays, there are three components that Rotman has asked for. While one of them is an essay question, the other two are questions that need to be answered in different formats. You will understand it as you keep reading this article.

Rotman Essay Question

Our admitted students stand out by doing interesting things with their personal and professional lives — something we describe as the ‘spike factor’; what are the things that you have done in your life that demonstrate Passion/ Grit/ Resilience/ Innovation/ Drive/ Ambition and more?

Word limit: 1000 words

It says that you can write up to 1000 words and it goes on to say, “This can cross all or any aspects of life outside of work – hobbies, volunteerism, awards, entrepreneurial ventures, sports, and the arts. We believe that exposure to a rich diversity of viewpoints makes for a superior learning experience, and pride ourselves on building a diverse class of exceptional individuals who will go on to make the School proud as professionals and alumni.

Explain your spike factor (something unique about yourself) that you believe will contribute to the Rotman community and is aligned with Rotman values.”

Before you start writing this essay, we would suggest that you think about the question and understand it very well. And then you should try to figure out what that ‘spike’ or ‘wow’ factor is.

Basically, what Rotman is looking for here is your unique selling proposition (USP). And you need to find that USP before you start drafting the essay. You need to find out what is different about you and what is unique about you .

When it comes to identifying your spike factor, there are mainly three areas in your life that you might want to revisit and check closely until you find it:

  • Academics/Background
  • Work Experience
  • Extracurricular activities

These are three areas that will help you figure out the spike factor. You could have done exceptionally well when it came to academics. Or, if you were someone who was not great at academics, you might have performed really well when you started working. If it is not even that you might have some talent that makes you different from the crowd.

Once you identify your spike factor, all you need to do is back it up with facts to prove why it is what makes you different from the rest of the applicants. Why do you think that this factor makes you unique?

But to complete your essay, you need to tie this factor to the two main points that they have mentioned – How your spike factor will contribute to the Rotman community and how it is aligned with the Rotman values.

For this, you need to know what the Rotman values are: Diversity, Excellence, Integrity, and Respect.

Let us give you an example of a Rotman candidate here so that you understand what exactly you need to focus on while completing the essay. The candidate was someone who was very interested in figuring out new mobile apps and reviewing them. He even maintained a blog and social media channels to post his app reviews. And some of his tweets got numerous retweets and engagements. He is like a productivity junkie!

Why will he portray this as his spike factor? To understand this, you might want to look at his background and work experience.

He was someone who did fairly well in school but was never in the top 25% of his class. And then he went on to become a software engineer. He must have probably been promoted to a second level but that was not too significant to be a spike factor.

He identified his spike factor from the extracurricular activities that he consistently pursued. And this factor is sure to be different from the rest of the candidates’.

Now, how did he tie this identified spike factor to Rotman and its values?

Firstly, he explains how a lot of the things that we do on a day-to-day basis are driven by apps. And then he speaks of how Rotman has so many student-driven clubs and how he could add the technology factor in them to make them more efficient. That was the kind of contribution he wished to make.

He chose the Rotman value, excellence, and said that he is always someone who tries to make something better. And he strives to punch above his weight to make things the best. And that is how he tied his spike factor to one of the Rotman values.

Remember, you have 1000 words. But this does not mean that you keep writing. Stick to what you want to say, create a great story, and then complete it.

Rotman Question(Optional)

Please upload 1-3 of your ‘spikiest’ pictures to the supplemental items section of your application here. Use the essay to tell us why you have chosen these particular images to illustrate your ‘spike factor’

Note: Your photos must be uploaded as a single PDF.

Though Rotman has mentioned that this is optional, we are going to tell you how to go about this question as well.

This is a section where you want to showcase your creativity.

You have already figured out your spike factor. By adding pictures to show it, you are just adding more colour to the important points you mentioned in the essay. These pictures will prove your essay to be true.

Let us go back to the example of the candidate who reviewed apps. In his case, he could provide pictures of one of his tweets that went viral or pictures that show the traffic that he drove to his blog. He could even provide a picture of him receiving an award from someone in case it is related to the spike factor that he mentioned!

So, this section is all about creativity. And even if you don’t have a picture where you are receiving an award, it’s fine. You will still be able to find pictures that will add value to your essay.

Rotman Video Essay Question

Required video interview (2 questions) with a new timed written response component (10 minutes in length)

It goes on to say, “Example of timed written response: Often prospective MBA candidates build strong relationships, primarily online, with the admissions office. We encourage candidates to follow-up with the admissions team members they meet representing Rotman around the world.

Craft an email to the Rotman representative that you met at a recent MBA Fair reiterating your interest in the School and desire to stay connected.”

Every Rotman candidate has to appear for this component. You cannot complete your application without it. And what you need to make note is that you will not be provided the questions prior. You will have to think on the spot for maybe about 30 seconds and then provide the answer.

It is not necessary that everyone is great at speaking or writing in English without practice. And this is exactly what Rotman wants to test. They want to see how you will manage the situation and how well you will do it.

We would suggest you take the video component when you are sure that there will be no disturbance in the background. Then you take a deep breath, place yourself in the centre of the screen of your system or laptop and have the light source in front of you. You can even practice this a few times before you go for the actual video component.

Now coming to the timed written component, if you look at the example that they have given here, they are trying to check your communication skills.

They want to know how you will communicate given a situation like this. And writing an email is something that you will definitely have to do in a corporate world!

So, plan it in advance. Plan the basic structure so that you don’t miss anything out.

Given the example, you start your email by thanking the person for their time. You build your email introduction using that. In the body of your email, you could say, “As discussed…” and then mention why you are interested in Rotman and what makes you unique. Also, don’t forget to mention what value you would bring to the B-school and why Rotman is the right choice for you.

This is broadly the Rotman essay itself except that it is in a different format. In your actual essay you had to speak about your spike factor and you were not given an opportunity to tell them “Why Rotman”. This is the chance for you to talk about that.

Once you have made the point, thank the person again in the end and probably even mention that you will send a connection request on LinkedIn.

Remember: Use the first 30 seconds to take a deep breath and to think about what you will write. Put down all the points so that you don’t forget anything. Spend the next three to three and a half minutes typing it out and ensure that you have at least two minutes to proofread it. This is very important because you never know the kind of mistakes you would make when you are under pressure.

So, if you’re applying to Rotman and feel that you need expert guidance to brainstorm and help you bring out your story through the one essay, feel free to reach out to us.

Sample Answer

In my life, I have faced the formidable challenges of depression and anxiety. The strength I discovered within myself, both to overcome the struggle and ultimately to flourish, was truly enlightening. The initial but vital step was recognizing my need for help; humbling though it was, this step remains indispensable to my journey. By embracing this vulnerability, I gathered the courage to seek assistance from a mental health professional who provided indispensable counsel and support.

My loved ones surrounded me during this period, demonstrating unwavering support and unalloyed understanding. This sincere demonstration of patience, empathy, and their proactive attempt to acquaint themselves with mental health issues was monumentally beneficial. The journey towards recovery is not a straight path; it involves occasional relapses and stagnation. Such instances, while initially dispiriting, ultimately underscore the significance of resilience. Thus, endowed with the resolve to decline negativity and carry on, I learned to perceive setbacks not as hindrances but as opportunities for growth.

This journey to recovery sparked a desire within me to champion mental health advocacy. By initiating dialogue and shared experiences, I aimed to nurture an environment conducive to fruitful discussion and facilitate access to essential resources at my workplace. With a newfound understanding of the emotional support that underprivileged children require, I embarked on a developmental initiative.

Through a series of sessions at a children’s NGO, we aimed to buttress their confidence and evince their dormant potential. Similarly, at Rotman School, I aspire to establish a health and wellness club and to contribute to various volunteering initiatives.

Embracing these experiences, I carried over similar responsibilities into my professional life, particularly in creating transformative impacts and managing challenging projects. For instance, in Accenture, I functioned as a Software Engineering Analyst where I led the development of a geographically-centric dashboard to effectuate business continuity for my clients.

To ensure the successful execution of this project, I defined key performance indicators (KPIs) by identifying specific business goals. This permitted me to align my objectives with the purpose of the dashboard. Subsequently, I amalgamated data from diverse sources, ensured its veracity, consistency, and precision, and formatted it for optimal visualization.

I was also responsible for the overall design and interactive elements of the dashboard and ensured the speed and efficiency of its loading and updating capabilities. Additionally, real users and stakeholders tested the dashboard minutely for feedback and improvements, which ultimately resulted in a decrease in business downtime by 15%, mitigating both financial and reputational losses.

At Rotman School, I am excited about the prospect of joining the renowned consulting club, where I will have the opportunity to contribute to tough industrial assignments through probono consulting. In sum, my aspiration at Rotman is to enrich my academic experience while concurrently contributing towards the mental well-being of the vibrant and diverse student body.

Upon my graduation, I embarked on my professional journey with Accenture, where I initially served as an Application Developer Associate. During my tenure, I received intensive training in Oracle technology and was subsequently involved in an internal project that I led within a five-member team.

My team and I were successful in delivering the project within a month. This remarkable achievement allowed us to complete our probation period seven months ahead of schedule, fueling my motivation to expand my skill set. Concurrently, I earned certification specializing in Oracle financials, which secured my position on a project with a prominent US-based pharmaceutical company and broadened my understanding of international market needs.

As my first year at Accenture concluded, I reaped the rewards of my hard work, earning a fast-track promotion to the role of "Application Developer Analyst" within only four months of the project. As my confidence grew, I also undertook the responsibility of mentoring three junior developers. It is at this stage in my career as a computer science engineer that I've come to appreciate the increasing overlap of technology and business.

In recognizing the evolving landscape of my profession, I'm now yearning to pursue an MBA as a means to bridge my technical background with the strategic decision-making inherent to the business industry. My goal is to apply my technical prowess in driving innovative solutions and boosting organizational operational efficiency. Moreover, I aim to create a name for myself within the confluence of financial technology and analytics, assuming roles such as Business Financial Strategist. By doing so, I hope to integrate my background in developing state-of-the-art financial tools, algorithms, and business strategies.

My immediate objective is to serve innovative businesses or progressive financial institutions that are keen on harnessing technological advancements for financial growth. Projecting onto the distant horizon, my ultimate ambition is to climb to the apex of the corporate ladder as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO), playing a significant role in shaping an organization’s financial ethos through innovative finance transformation strategies.

The Rotman MBA program, famed for its emphasis on leadership development, reflects my aspirations. The necessity for a global viewpoint is paramount in our interconnected world today, and Rotman's MBA program curates an international cohort that allows engagement with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, enabling an expansion of worldviews.

  • Showcase your commitment to continuous learning and awareness-building around EDI issues. Discuss how you have educated yourself and others about the challenges faced by marginalized groups and taken proactive steps to address them.
  • Acknowledge the challenges and biases present in your industry or environment and discuss how you have addressed them through proactive measures such as mentorship programs, support initiatives, and advocacy efforts.
  • Ensure that your discussion of responsible leadership in EDI aligns with the values and mission of the organization or institution to which you are applying. Demonstrate how your beliefs and experiences resonate with their commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Conclude by expressing your ongoing commitment to responsible leadership in promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion. Emphasize your enthusiasm for contributing to a more inclusive and equitable future within your chosen field or community.

As I reflect upon the profound significance of responsible leadership within the sphere of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), I inherently associate it with guiding by illustration and remaining steadfast to ethical decisions in difficult situations. Responsible leadership further mandates ownership for our actions, prioritizing others' well-being and sowing an environment that fosters fairness and treats everyone with the respect they deserve.

Through my journey at WhiteHat Jr., I had the good fortune of imparting coding skills to children hailing from diverse cultural backgrounds. This experience illuminated the criticality of equity in leadership. Regardless of their origins, each child possessed the capacity to understand and apply coding principles. By promoting an inclusive learning framework, we ensured equal access to resources, which was crucial for their success.

The significance of such equitable learning opportunities became evident as I saw them unlock potential and fuel the dreams of young minds. The very concept of diversity permeated beyond nationality to embrace varying learning styles and abilities. A commitment to this diversity unlocked creative solutions and innovative approaches to coding problems. Consequently, responsible leadership came to be synonymous with identifying, appreciating, and leveraging diversity.

My stint at the global tech giant Accenture further underscored EDI's importance. In a multicultural company like Accenture, diversity was not merely a milestone to achieve, but it was a foundation that lent strength to our collective endeavor. Working with people from assorted cultural backgrounds enriched our project teams, facilitating superior decision-making and a broader spectrum of problem-solving. The true essence of inclusion, however, lay in ensuring that every voice counted, transcending the symbolism of occupancies at the table. Such inclusive teams displayed superior innovation and adaptability, resulting in optimal outcomes.

Continual education and awareness of the multifaceted challenges encountered by marginalized groups, particularly in the tech industry, were key to nurturing empathy and making informed decisions conducive to an inclusive environment. The tech world's inherent gender imbalances and biases posed challenges that required inexorable resolve from responsible leaders.

In response, Accenture adopted mentorship programs and actively advocated for diversity and inclusion initiatives. This aspect of responsible leadership transcended personal actions to trigger a domino effect, triggering progressive changes within organizations, communities, and, eventually, society. All in all, it resonated with the values of fairness, inclusivity, and social responsibility.

My accumulated experiences have only reinforced my commitment to responsible leadership in EDI, which seamlessly aligns with the values of this esteemed institution. With a persistent eye on the future, I am eager to contribute to fostering an ecosystem that is both inclusive and equitable.

In the swiftly changing world of business, a significant concern for leaders is maximizing the efficacy of data management. As a computer science engineer with experience at Accenture, I understand the magnitude of this problem. Data acts as both an invaluable resource and a challenging obstacle for companies, and I am dedicated to providing solutions.

The task of managing data holds substantial relevance to businesses today. With vast amounts of data pouring in from diverse sources such as customer feedback, market trends, and operational processes, organizations face the daunting task of making sense of this surge of information. Despite possessing a wealth of data, companies often struggle to draw meaningful conclusions, make informed decisions, and foster innovation. The increasing inflow of new data, advancements in technology, and ever-changing regulatory landscapes compound this issue.

Through my professional experience in the computer science field, I have garnered insights into various industries, each grappling with unique challenges in data management. I have seen companies invest vast resources in data collection and storage, only to then be burdened with issues such as data segregation, inefficient data pipelines, and ineffective data governance.

My intent to enroll in the Rotman MBA program is derived from its potential to arm me with the requisite knowledge and skills to combat this formidable adversary. Rotman's curriculum offers specialized courses in data analytics, business intelligence, and technology strategy. These will furnish me with a thorough understanding of data management within a business framework. This newfound knowledge would help me bridge the chasm between the technical and strategic aspects of decision-making, which is crucial to overcoming the data challenge.

Further, Rotman's emphasis on practical learning aligns seamlessly with my problem-solving approach. Hence, I believe that the case studies and real-world projects offered by the program would allow me to cement theoretical concepts in practical scenarios. Prepares to spearhead change in organizations right from the outset.

My aim is to leverage the extensive resources and expertise at Rotman to devise all-encompassing responses to data-related problems. Upon completion of the program, I aspire to be a leader capable of not only discerning and mitigating data management issues but also articulating the strategic significance of data to a broad spectrum of stakeholders within a company.

Subsequently, I look forward to applying my Rotman education to bring about transformative change within organizations. My goal is to metamorphose data into a strategic resource, guaranteeing a data-smart future.

Toronto Rotman MBA Essay Tips and Deadlines [2022 - 2023]

The University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management is one of the leading business schools in Canada. Known for its design approach to MBA education and strong emphasis on problem solving, Rotman’s program continues to grow in renown.

Through the uniquely engaging essay question and the opportunity to shape a rich and in-depth message over a generous word limit, this essay invites you to demonstrate the self-knowledge and personal insight that convey your fit with the values and culture of the program.

Toronto Rotman 2022-2023 MBA application

Rotman mba essay question.

Our admitted students stand out by doing interesting things with their personal and professional lives — something we describe as the ‘spike factor’ ; what are the things that you have done in your life that demonstrate Passion/ Grit/ Resilience/ Innovation/ Drive/ Ambition and more? This can cross all or any aspects of life outside of work – hobbies, volunteerism, awards, entrepreneurial ventures, sports and the arts. We believe that exposure to a rich diversity of viewpoints makes for a superior learning experience, and pride ourselves on building a diverse class of exceptional individuals who will go on to make the School proud as professionals and alumni. Explain your spike factor (something unique about yourself) that you believe will contribute to the Rotman community and is aligned with Rotman values . (up to 1000 words)* Optional – Please upload 1-3 of your ‘spikiest’ pictures to the supplemental items section of your application here. Note: Your photos must be uploaded as a single PDF.

“Spike factor.” Those words say a lot. You should make this essay, and the points it contains, not just interesting – it should also bring a grin to the reader’s face, or make them nod and think “Yes!” They should feel a tingle of enjoyment on reading it.

[Listen: Toronto Rotman’s MBA admissions director, Imran Kanga discussed “Spike Factor”>>]

“Explain.” This word on the other hand can mislead you into lengthy exposition. Make any explanation short and sweet. You do have to explicitly explain your “spike factor” because the question directs you to. But you don’t have to do it at the start of the essay, and you don’t have to do it at length. Consider starting the essay with an anecdote to engage the reader.

Once you decide on the spike factor that you will present, find 1-3 illustrative anecdotes from outside of work and from work that illustrate it – if more than one, make sure they show different contexts or facets of the spike factor. Be strategic about which anecdotes you use; i.e., what are some meaningful “zoom-in” moments or experiences from your life (at least 1 relatively recent) that would enhance your application in relevant ways? Use this essay to fill in the mosaic of who you are.

The emphasis on the word “diverse/diversity” in the question prelude indicates that the adcom appreciates reflections that are not only individual perspectives but that the applicant feels connect her to a broader group in some way. If you portray such a connection, great; just make sure it adds a distinctive nuance or message.

As for that spike factor – dig into your own experience and personality to identify a point that shows what makes you tick. You will then make that point distinctive, vivid, and memorable through your examples and stories.

Rotman MBA required video interview

The video interview component is a required part of Rotman Admissions process designed to give all candidates guaranteed “face time” with the Admissions Committee and showcase your personality, characteristics, passions, and values. You will have an opportunity to test the technology, and then will be asked two taped questions, followed by a real-time written response (no video with this component.) Both questions are personality/values based and are designed to be answered without any advanced preparation and will only take a few minutes to complete. The written question is designed to simulate the typical email communications you will create as a Rotman MBA student. After your application has been submitted, you will receive an invitation via email to complete your video interview within 2 business days.

Without knowing what the questions are, it’s best to approach the video interview with both your application and the Rotman program fresh in your mind. This will help you to avoid both (a) being redundant and (b) being contradictory or inconsistent. I suggest viewing and approaching it as a continuation of the dialogue started in your essay. It presents special challenges, particularly for non-native English speakers and writers who may typically take more time to polish their writing in English. While it’s natural for a follow-up piece like this essay to be less polished and less thought through than essays on which you reasonably spend more time, it should not sound like a different person or present such a gap in English writing fluency that it raises doubts about your authorship of the written portions of the application. If you are worried about these elements – practice. Give yourself sample topics and a 5-10 minute response window. Use tough questions, to make the actual one (hopefully) seem easier!

You’ve worked so hard to get to this point in your journey. Now that you’re ready for your next achievement, make sure you know how to present yourself to maximum advantage in your Rotman application. In a hotly competitive season, you’ll want a member of Team Accepted in your corner, guiding you with expertise tailored specifically for you.  Check out our flexible consulting packages today!

After completing your questions, you will receive a confirmation email and unique URL to input into this section of the application and complete the video component. Good luck and have fun with the process!

Rotman Optional Essay: This is not a required part of the admissions process, but instead an opportunity to share anything you think the Admissions Committee should know that has not been covered by the rest of the application? There is no need to answer this question if you feel that your background has been thoroughly presented throughout the application.
