What are some of the trending areas of focus in the online Doctor of Education in Higher Education Leadership program?

We ranked these degree programs based on quality, curricula, school awards, rankings, and reputation.

What Else Can I Expect from an Online Doctorate in Higher Education Program?

Coursework can vary significantly between online doctoral programs in higher education, with some focused on practical skills for educational administration and others on academic skills for research. In general, however, this degree offers a comprehensive perspective on the major practices in higher education and the strategies used for gauging their effectiveness.

Curriculum for an Online Doctorate in Higher Education

  • Foundations of Education Research: Part of most programs, this course introduces the major principles of education research, exploring the theoretical, practical, philosophical, and ethical dimensions of performing research. Given its broad nature, this course pertains to all types of higher education careers.
  • Higher Education Law: Exploring the application of legal theories and practices to higher education, this course is mandatory for candidates in administrative positions. Higher education law typically covers topics that include nondiscrimination in employment, privacy and openness, contractual obligations, tenure, academic freedom, and program discontinuance.
  • Adult Learners: Designed to address changing age demographics in higher education populations, this course focuses on the major theories and perspectives associated with adult learning. A common requirement for higher education administrators, the course also presents strategies for meeting the unique needs of these students.
  • Enrollment Management and Marketing: Addressing issues of strategic enrollment, this course aids candidates in college enrollment departments. Students explore fundamental topics such as branding, forecasting, differentiation, and alumni relations. Increasingly, enrollment and marketing management also involve social media and other digital public relations tools.
  • Higher Education Practicum: Regardless of focus or career goals, most candidates earning their Ph.D. in higher education online must complete a professional practicum, typically at their place of employment or another professional higher education setting. The practicum offers the chance for hands-on learning, allowing students to draw connections between coursework and their own professional practice.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Online Doctorate in Higher Education?

Earning a doctorate in higher education online requires commitment, and one factor in your choice of program may be its total completion time. In general, most programs require 50-60 credit hours, taking anywhere from 3-5 years to complete, but this can vary based on factors such as residency components. Most Ph.D. higher education online programs also require you to possess a master’s degree in a related field.

Some doctoral degrees use an accelerated format that features a more intensive course schedule but allows you to complete your education faster. These programs often include residency sessions that require you to spend a certain amount of time on campus for concentrated classroom learning. Some degrees may also use an independent, self-paced format that allows you to complete work on your own schedule, while others use a cohort format where you complete a set sequence of courses with the same group of students.

Accreditation for Online Doctorate in Higher Education Degrees

When researching online programs, determine the school’s accreditation status, which indicates academic reputability and quality. Accreditation indicates that a school received a positive assessment of their academic programs from a licensed accreditation agency, designating the institution’s ability to adequately serve students.

Colleges and universities in the U.S. receive either regional or national accreditation. Typically, professional and vocational programs hold national recognition, while academic programs receive regional accreditation. Any reputable online doctorate in higher education will hold regional accreditation. When examining doctoral programs, look for an accreditation status from agencies like the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), or the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

While the U.S. Department of Education (ED) oversees both primary and secondary education in the U.S., it does not provide accreditation to postsecondary institutions, such as colleges and universities. Instead, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) oversees these institutions, counting over 3,000 schools and around 60 accreditation organizations among its members. The ED also conducts reviews of all accrediting agencies, ensuring that they meet certain government standards. Together, these two organizations maintain standards for higher education in the U.S. CHEA aims to eliminate degree mills — fraudulent education providers that offer counterfeit academic programs for profit. Both CHEA and the ED maintain listings of accredited schools and accrediting organizations, which can be useful when determining the reputability of a school or online program.

Educational Administration: Higher Education Leadership (Ph.D.)

Description.

The Department of Educational Leadership offers the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in educational administration with a specialization in leadership in higher education. This program, which prepares students for positions of leadership in two- and four-year collegiate institutions, is geared toward professionals who are currently working in higher educational settings and desire a quality educational experience that allows them to continue meeting family and work responsibilities.

  • This online Ph.D. in higher education leadership includes a focus on preparing graduates for administrative leadership positions at public or private four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, technical schools, and for-profit post-secondary institutions.
  • Master's degree coursework is applied to the curriculum such that students take 45 credit hours of coursework (15 courses) plus 18 dissertation hours to meet the requisite 90 hours needed to complete the degree. Students can complete the program in two academic years or five semesters. Students are required to complete three weeks of residency during the summer.
  • The program follows a scholar/practitioner philosophy that stresses knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for leading institutions of higher education in the twenty-first century. The program offers opportunities for mentoring and support from a network of alumni who provide valuable insight and guidance throughout the program.
  • The curriculum includes significant supervised practice coursework and blends class-based, practicum-based, and independent learning experiences. The curriculum also includes an integrated internship experience designed to familiarize students with a minimum of three administrative units within an institution of higher education. Coursework and dissertation projects focus on problems of practice.
  • Students begin the program with a cohort group and commit to moving through the program's schedule of studies with that cohort group. Students enroll full time (3 course for 9 credit hours) each semester for five consecutive terms over a two-year period, including a summer session. Coursework is delivered through a combination of online learning and intensive on-campus workshops. Internet and audio conferencing are some of the technologies used. Courses during the academic year consist of three Friday/Saturday on-campus workshop seminars and weekly Internet audio/video sessions that generally meet one afternoon per week. The summer session between the first and second academic year combines directed study and a required three-week residency on campus.
  • Programs starting in the Fall of odd years: classes are held on Wednesdays
  • Programs starting in the Fall of even years: classes are held on Thursdays
  • This online program is open to eligible students in the U.S. (including the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories). The program also is open to students in Canada (all provinces). The program is closed to students residing in countries other than the U.S. and Canada except for U.S. military and State Department personnel and their family members with APO/FPO addresses.

The coursework consists of a basic core in which students are provided with a firm grounding in the organizational context of higher education including its history, social and philosophical foundations, and contemporary challenges as well as introduced to the processes of educational inquiry and research.

The internship core consists of two semester-long, field-based experiences under the supervision of a university supervisor and an on-site mentor. In the advanced core, students investigate the major functional areas of higher education and contemporary management science and leadership theories.

Emphasis is on problem-based learning in the courses, and the internship experiences give students opportunities to link theory to practice as well as enhance the learning environment for students and faculty. Upon completion of coursework, students take comprehensive examinations (prelims) integrating what they have learned in classes and internships. Once admitted to candidacy, students plan, propose, conduct, present, and defend their dissertation research.

  • Is the GRE required for admission?  Are GRE waivers available? Yes, the GRE is required for all students.  There are no GRE waivers for this program.  However, you can submit GRE scores that are up to 5 years old.
  • Is a Masters degree required for admission? Yes.  All applicants must have a masters degree from an accredited College or University.
  • Are there funding opportunities available? Students can apply (by December of the year prior to the start of the cohort) for competitive fellowships through the College of Education and the University. Please note that the fellowship application deadline is much earlier than the regular application deadline.  Fellowship students come and work either as teaching assistants or graduate assistants at Purdue.
  • Is it possible to work full time and complete the PhD? Yes.  However, students must be available to take classes (either in person or live via Zoom) from 6 – 9 p.m. EST two weeknights each week (days may vary).
  • How much is tuition? Tuition is $700/credit hour for in-state students and $750/credit hour for out-of-state students.  Please note that the required study abroad program expenses are in addition to tuition and will range from $4,000 – $6,000 plus airfare.
  • How many courses do PhD students take each semester? Standard load is two three-credit courses each semester.  In addition to these two classes, depending on the semester, students may also register for 1 hour of internship, or dissertation research.  Students will not take more than 7 credit hours in a semester unless special arrangements are made in advance.
  • What is the study abroad component of the program? The required study abroad program will take place during the summer after students’ second year of coursework. We will travel abroad for approximately 10 days and work with professors and administrators at a partnering Higher Education Institution (currently at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland).  Please note that study abroad costs are in addition to tuition and will range between $4,000 – $6,000 plus airfare.
  • What does the dissertation for this PhD look like? The dissertation requires that students author (with program faculty) at least three peer-reviewed scholarly articles of appropriate length and subject matter during their doctoral studies.  The dissertation consists of an introductory chapter, reprints of these three (or more) articles, and an analysis/conclusion chapter.
  • What does the internship involve? Internships are individualized and are designed to give students experience in areas of a college or university that they are interested in exploring.  The internship is not a “job shadowing” experience and students are not required to be physically present in West Lafayette to complete an internship at Purdue.  Instead, the internship is project based, allowing students to gain important experience with “real world” higher education issues and challenges.
  • What does it mean to be a “hybrid” doctoral program? Students are required to come to West Lafayette for an intensive class once per semester.  Students are encouraged to attend class in-person each week as they are able.  However, for students who live some distance from Purdue, they can access the weekly courses in real time via Zoom each week.  The only requirement is that students must be available to be “at” classes from 6 – 9 p.m. EST two nights each week.
  • When is the application deadline? NEW DEADLINE – February 15 th  (note that students interested in fellowships must apply by December of the previous year)

Earning a doctoral degree in any field is a huge undertaking. A PhD or EdD in Higher Education Administration requires great dedication and focus. Most of the individuals that obtain a higher education degree seek a career in the educational field. These individuals may teach or lead at higher levels, such as college or university. They may also become administrators. Additionally, educators may choose to move on to teaching at a higher level in public or private schools. Some may choose to go into educational research with their degree. The goal of a PhD or EdD in Higher Education Administration is to prepare graduates to become leaders in whichever field they choose.

Choosing the right college or university may be one of the most difficult decisions graduate students are faced with. When looking into online doctoral programs for higher education administration, it is crucial to know that the institution you choose is accredited, nationally recognized, and reputable. Use the following to help you make an informed decision:

Is the Program Accredited?

First and foremost, find out if the online school is accredited. When a school or program is accredited, you will feel comfortable in knowing that the school will deliver a high caliber of education. The accreditation process is similar to that of peer review. A Doctoral Degree in Higher Education Administration can become accredited once a peer review process is successfully completed by an official organization or agency representing the field. Upon request, online colleges and universities often proudly share their accreditation status. To learn more about accreditation, you can visit: ed.gov/accreditation

How Long Has the Program Been Offered?

Longevity is often a good marker of an online program's success. Do keep in mind that online learning is a relatively new form of education. However, be cautious of schools that have not been around long enough to receive full accreditation. If a school is not accredited, your degree will not be valid - no matter how long the program has been around.

What Technologies Will Be Used to Facilitate Online Learning?

Online doctoral programs in higher education administration facilitate instruction via web-based classrooms. These online learning platforms allow students to access multimedia lectures, view assignments, communicate with peers, and more. Each school uses a different online learning platform. It may be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the program at hand before signing on.

What Resources Will I Have Access To?

Many online schools provide student services such as online resources. Online resources may come in the form of research catalogs, scholarly journals, technology assistance, mentors, and other online tools. Support is important, so be sure the school provides an ample amount.

What Skills and Topics Are Covered?

Find out if the program's curriculum is right for you. In other words, assess whether your career goals are in line with the doctoral program's. Reputable online programs will be able to provide an organized curriculum upon request - presented in the form of measurable program goals and outcomes.

Do You Have Job Placement Information for Students Who Recently Graduated from the Program?

Alumni can act as great career mentors and counselors. Find out what recent graduates from an online higher education administration program have done with their doctoral degree. The success of recent graduates can give you some insight into the legitimacy and effectiveness of an online program.

Earning a PhD or EdD in Higher Education Administration requires a lot of time and dedication. Many people who entertain the idea of getting a doctorate are already working full time. This can make it difficult to fit in classes. Online courses may be the answer for those who are too busy for the traditional brick and mortar classroom. Below we will explore some aspects of online education to help you decide if it's right for you.

Flexible Schedule

As an influx of students choose online doctoral programs, it seems one of the biggest appeals is flexibility. Doctoral candidates may be older and have family and work responsibilities. These huge responsibilities limit their time and ability to attend traditional classes on a college campus. Online schooling gives students the opportunity to study and complete doctoral assignments whenever it fits into their schedule.

Opportunity and Accessibility

Online doctoral programs in higher education administration have created new opportunities for different types of students. Online programs allow students to attend programs regardless of their geographic location, scheduling restrictions, or physical ability. Two basic things are needed for an online education - a computer and internet connection.

Self-Starter

Often times, those who thrive in online courses are self-starters. In other words, students who are able to remain organized, plan studies, and stay on top of their assignments will find easier success in online doctoral programs. Online higher education administration courses are definitely rigorous, so staying on top of assignments is a must.

Tuition and Costs

Earning a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration can be costly no matter what form the education comes in, online or in the classroom. Some financial assistance can be gained through the use of FAFSA , which allows students to qualify for loans and grants. When considering the overall cost for a PhD or EdD, online schools can end up costing less. Take the following costs into consideration:

  • With online programs, there are absolutely no costs associated with parking passes, transportation, gas, car maintenance, or on-campus meals.
  • Online schooling omits costs related to relocating or living on campus.
  • Online students have the ability to maintain a typical work day schedule, since they do not need to attend physical classes. With that said, students are able to continue making a living with their current job.

Doctoral Program Course Topics

Course topics for an Doctorate in Higher Education Administration will vary depending on the school. However, graduate students can expect to see the likes of the following:

Student Development and the Study of College Impact

This class helps students understand teaching at the higher education level and how such levels impact students in that environment.

Higher Education and Society

Higher education affects everyone involved, even the surrounding community. Society also has a viewpoint on higher education and this is addressed within the class.

Multicultural Issues in American Higher Education

Just as gender issues exist in the realm of higher education administration, so do multicultural issues. This course will focus on these issues and how to deal with them in the academic environment.

The following are some career pathways that may be made possible with a PhD or EdD in Higher Education Administration: college professor , university or college admissions administrator, researcher, professional public speaker, academic dean, academic advisor, and college registrar.

To help stay connected and grow within the field of higher education administration, it may be a good idea to join a professional association, such as the American Association of University Administrators . The AAUA has a mission to develop and advance the standards for the profession of higher education administration. The association works to promote the professional development of those involved in higher education administration.

Indiana Wesleyan University

$499/credit

Headquartered in Marion, Indiana, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) reaches students around the world through its online National and Global campus. The university’s online Master of Science program in management includes four concentration options: data analytics, information technology management, healthcare administration, and policy and organizational change.

No matter their chosen concentration, all of the program’s students complete courses in areas such as foundations of graduate business and ethical and legal aspects of management. The program’s curriculum consists of 30 total credits. The university delivers all online coursework asynchronously.

  • Concentrations Available: Data analytics; information technology management; policy and organizational change

These days, an online degree might seem like the obvious choice. However, distance learning is only the right fit for a specific type of student . To determine if that’s you, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What’s your budget? Distance learning is a solid option for students looking to save money, as online students generally avoid paying campus-related costs such as housing and transportation. Additionally, some public universities allow students who exclusively enroll in online courses to pay in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates.
  • What are your other obligations? Online learning is often the right choice for parents and students who plan to work full or part time while enrolled. Many of the ranked programs in our guide were built for business professionals who want to complete their master’s degrees around their jobs.
  • What’s your learning style? This is possibly the biggest question when determining whether or not online learning is right for you. If you are disciplined, organized and self-motivated, you can likely succeed in a less structured distance learning environment. If you crave regular interactions with a peer group or professor or prefer the structure of a physical classroom, campus-based learning might be a better choice.

There are two important types of accreditation: institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is the more important of the two. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) and Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) oversee the agencies that manage the institutional accreditation process. These agencies are each responsible for the schools within a group of states, vetting these schools for the quality of their academics, faculty and finances, among other areas.

You should only enroll at institutionally accredited schools, as this is the only way to qualify for federal financial aid. You can check a prospective school’s accreditation by visiting the accreditation page on its website or checking the directory on CHEA’s website.

Programmatic accreditation provides a similar vetting service in specific fields and disciplines. Its importance varies by field; however, programmatic accreditation is relatively important in business and management.

With master’s in management programs, keep an eye out for accreditation from three organizations: the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the International Accreditation Council for Business Education, or the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

Consider Your Future Goals

An online master’s in management program is generally a good option for an early career business professional who aspires to managerial and supervisory roles in their field. Some people claim that a master’s in management is a more practical degree than an M.B.A. , focused more on minutiae and data such as budgeting and forecasting.

As such, many schools build their programs with working business professionals in mind. To that end, many online master’s in management programs do not include field experience or practicum experiences or internships. If you want your program to include this opportunity, you’ll have to research more carefully on the front end.

Since management is a general field, some online programs in the field offer more specific concentrations in areas such as nonprofit management, human resource management or supply chain management. If you know you want to enter one of these subfields, make sure to apply to a program with the right concentration option.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Per-credit tuition rates for the 10 ranked programs in our guide ranged from $347 to $775. Over the course of a typical 30- to 36-credit master’s in management program, these rates translate to approximately $10,000 to $28,000 in total tuition.

As of the 2021–2022 academic year, the National Center for Education Statistics found that the average college charged $20,513 in annual tuition. For a one- or two-year master’s program, this translates to roughly $20,000 to $40,000 in total tuition.

Make sure to fill out the FAFSA to finance your master’s program. The FAFSA can lead to loans, scholarships and grants. You can pursue similar opportunities through nonprofit organizations and schools. You can also seek out graduate assistantships through your school, but these opportunities are often reserved for on-campus students.

Is a master’s in management worth it?

It depends on your goals and circumstances. However, if you hope to advance to a managerial role in a business field, a master’s in management is often worth it, equipping you with qualifications and skills necessary to advance your career.

Is a master’s in management the same as an M.B.A.?

No, they are two separate degrees. Some would say that a master’s in management is a more practical degree, focused on budgeting and forecasting as opposed to big-picture thinking. A master’s in management is often built for early career business professionals, while an M.B.A. targets career changers and accelerators.

How long does a master’s in management take?

The programs in our guide generally take between 12 and 24 months to complete depending on how many courses you take per term.
