Hitler's First Radio Address

On February 1, 1933, two days after he was appointed chancellor, Hitler spoke over the radio to the German people about his vision for the future of the country:

Over fourteen years have passed since that unhappy day when the German people, blinded by promises made by those at home and abroad, forgot the highest values of our past, of the Reich, of its honor and its freedom, and thereby lost everything. Since those days of treason, the Almighty has withdrawn his blessing from our nation. Discord and hatred have moved in. Filled with the deepest distress, millions of the best German men and women from all walks of life see the unity of the nation disintegrating in a welter of egotistical political opinions, economic interests, and ideological conflicts. As so often in our history, Germany, since the day the revolution broke out, presents a picture of heartbreaking disunity. We did not receive the equality and fraternity which was promised us; instead we lost our freedom. The breakdown of the unity of mind and will of our nation at home was followed by the collapse of its political position abroad. We have a burning conviction that the German people in 1914 went into the great battle without any thought of personal guilt [for the start of the war] and weighed down only by the burden of having to defend the Reich from attack, to defend the freedom and material existence of the German people. In the appalling fate that has dogged us since November 1918 we see only the consequence of our inward collapse. But the rest of the world is no less shaken by great crises. The historical balance of power, which at one time contributed not a little to the understanding of the necessity for solidarity among the nations, with all the economic advantages resulting therefrom, has been destroyed. The delusion that some are the conquerors and others the conquered destroys the trust between nations and thereby also destroys the world economy. But the misery of our people is terrible! The starving industrial proletariat [working class] have become unemployed in their millions, while the whole middle and artisan class have been made paupers. If the German farmer also is involved in this collapse we shall be faced with a catastrophe of vast proportions. For in that case, there will collapse not only a Reich, but also a 2000-year-old inheritance of the highest works of human culture and civilization. All around us are symptoms portending this breakdown. With an unparalleled effort of will and of brute force the Communist method of madness is trying as a last resort to poison and undermine an inwardly shaken and uprooted nation. They seek to drive it towards an epoch which would correspond even less to the promises of the Communist speakers of today than did the epoch now drawing to a close to the promises of the same emissaries in November 1918. Starting with the family, and including all notions of honor and loyalty, nation and fatherland, culture and economy, even the eternal foundations of our morals and our faith—nothing is spared by this negative, totally destructive ideology. . . . One year of Bolshevism would destroy Germany. The richest and most beautiful areas of world civilization would be transformed into chaos and a heap of ruins. Even the misery of the past decade and a half could not be compared with the affliction of a Europe in whose heart the red flag of destruction had been planted. The thousands of injured, the countless dead which this battle has already cost Germany may stand as a presage of the disaster. In these hours of overwhelming concern for the existence and the future of the German nation, the venerable World War leader [President Paul von Hindenburg] appealed to us men of the nationalist parties and associations to fight under him again as once we did at the front, but now loyally united for the salvation of the Reich at home. The revered President of the Reich having with such generosity joined hands with us in a common pledge, we nationalist leaders would vow before God, our conscience and our people that we shall doggedly and with determination fulfill the mission entrusted to us as the National Government. It is an appalling inheritance which we are taking over. The task before us is the most difficult which has faced German statesmen in living memory. But we all have unbounded confidence, for we believe in our nation and in its eternal values. Farmers, workers, and the middle class must unite to contribute the bricks wherewith to build the new Reich. The National Government will therefore regard it as its first and supreme task to restore to the German people unity of mind and will. It will preserve and defend the foundations on which the strength of our nation rests. It will take under its firm protection Christianity as the basis of our morality, and the family as the nucleus of our nation and our state. Standing above estates [groups that make up society’s social hierarchy] and classes, it will bring back to our people the consciousness of its racial and political unity and the obligations arising therefrom. It wishes to base the education of German youth on respect for our great past and pride in our old traditions. . . . Germany must not and will not sink into Communist anarchy. In place of our turbulent instincts, it will make national discipline govern our life. In the process it will take into account all the institutions which are the true safeguards of the strength and power of our nation. The National Government will carry out the great task of reorganizing our national economy with two big Four-Year Plans: Saving the German farmer so that the nation’s food supply and thus the life of the nation shall be secured. Saving the German worker by a massive and comprehensive attack on unemployment. In fourteen years the November parties have ruined the German farmer. In fourteen years they created an army of millions of unemployed. The National Government will carry out the following plan with iron resolution and dogged perseverance. Within four years the German farmer must be saved from pauperism. Within four years unemployment must be completely overcome . . . . . . Our concern to provide daily bread will be equally a concern for the fulfillment of the responsibilities of society to those who are old and sick. The best safeguard against any experiment which might endanger the currency lies in economical administration, the promotion of work, and the preservation of agriculture, as well as in the use of individual initiative. In foreign policy, the National Government will see its highest mission in the preservation of our people’s right to an independent life and in the regaining thereby of their freedom. The determination of this Government to put an end to the chaotic conditions in Germany is a step towards the integration into the community of nations of a state having equal status and therefore equal rights with the rest. In so doing, the Government is aware of its great obligation to support, as the Government of a free and equal nation, that maintenance and consolidation of peace which the world needs today more than ever before. May all others understand our position and so help to ensure that this sincere desire for the welfare of Europe and of the whole world shall find fulfillment. Despite our love for our Army as the bearer of our arms and the symbol of our great past, we should be happy if the world, by restricting its armaments, made unnecessary any increase in our own weapons. But if Germany is to experience this political and economic revival and conscientiously to fulfill its duties towards other nations, a decisive act is required: We must overcome the demoralization of Germany by the Communists. We, men of this Government, feel responsible to German history for the reconstitution of a proper national body so that we may finally overcome the insanity of class and class warfare. We do not recognize classes, but only the German people, its millions of farmers, citizens and workers who together will either overcome this time of distress or succumb to it. With resolution and fidelity to our oath, seeing the powerlessness of the present Reichstag to shoulder the task we advocate, we wish to commit it to the whole German people. We therefore appeal now to the German people to sign this act of mutual reconciliation. The Government of the National Uprising [the Nazi-led government] wishes to set to work, and it will work. It has not for fourteen years brought ruin to the German nation; it wants to lead it to the summit. It is determined to make amends in four years for the liabilities of fourteen years. But it cannot subject the work of reconstruction to the will of those who were responsible for the breakdown. The Marxist parties [political parties including the Social Democrats] and their followers had fourteen years to prove their abilities. The result is a heap of ruins. Now, German people, give us four years and then judge us. Let us begin, loyal to the command of the Field-Marshal. May Almighty God favor our work, shape our will in the right way, bless our vision and bless us with the trust of our people. We have no desire to fight for ourselves; only for Germany. 1

Nürnberg Rally

Our editors will review what you’ve submitted and determine whether to revise the article.

  • Calvin College - Nuremberg Rally

Nürnberg Rally , any of the massive Nazi Party rallies held in 1923, 1927, and 1929 and annually from 1933 through 1938 in Nürnberg (Nuremberg) in Bavaria. The rallies were primarily propaganda events, carefully staged to reinforce party enthusiasm and to showcase the power of National Socialism to the rest of Germany and the world.

The first nationwide party convention was held in Munich in January 1923, but in September of the same year the site was moved to Nürnberg, whose quaint medieval character provided an ideal backdrop for the nationalistic pageantry of the second party congress. The first truly grand-scale rally occurred in 1929 and featured most of the elements that marked all future rallies: blaring Wagnerian overtures, stirring martial songs, banners, goose-step marches, human swastika formations, torchlight processions, bonfires, and magnificent fireworks displays. Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders delivered lengthy orations. Buildings were festooned with enormous flags and Nazi insignia. The climax of the rallies was the solemn consecration of the colours, in which new flags were touched to the Blutfahne (Blood Banner), a tattered standard said to have been steeped in the blood of those killed in Hitler’s abortive Beer Hall Putsch of November 8–9, 1923.

The rallies usually were held in late August or September, lasted several days to a week, and drew hundreds of thousands of Party members and spectators, including hundreds of foreign journalists. The rallies included rousing speeches by the Führer (Hitler) that were often the occasion for the announcement of new Nazi directions. For example, in 1935 the racist Nürnberg Laws were promulgated against the Jews.

The emotional power generated by the rallies has been preserved in films, most notably in Leni Riefenstahl ’s classic Triumph des Willens (1935; Triumph of the Will ), which presents a carefully orchestrated version of the 1934 rally. The so-called Peace Rally was canceled for 1939 because of preparations for war against Poland.

Extract from the Speech by Adolf Hitler, January 30, 1939

...In connection with the Jewish question I have this to say: it is a shameful spectacle to see how the whole democratic world is oozing sympathy for the poor tormented Jewish people, but remains hard-hearted and obdurate when it comes to helping them which is surely, in view of its attitude, an obvious duty. The arguments that are brought up as an excuse for not helping them actually speak for us Germans and Italians.

For this is what they say:

1. "We," that is the democracies, "are not in a position to take in the Jews." Yet in these empires there are not 10 people to the square kilometer. While Germany, with her 135 inhabitants to the square kilometer, is supposed to have room for them!

2. They assure us: We cannot take them unless Germany is prepared to allow them a certain amount of capital to bring with them as immigrants.

For hundreds of years Germany was good enough to receive these elements, although they possessed nothing except infectious political and physical diseases. What they possess today, they have by a very large extent gained at the cost of the less astute German nation by the most reprehensible manipulations.

Today we are merely paying this people what it deserves. When the German nation was, thanks to the inflation instigated and carried through by Jews, deprived of the entire savings which it had accumulated in years of honest work, when the rest of the world took away the German nation's foreign investments, when we were divested of the whole of our colonial possessions, these philanthropic considerations evidently carried little noticeable weight with democratic statesmen.

Today I can only assure these gentlemen that, thanks to the brutal education with which the democracies favored us for fifteen years, we are completely hardened to all attacks of sentiment. After more than eight hundred thousand children of the nation had died of hunger and undernourishment at the close of the War, we witnessed almost one million head of milking cows being driven away from us in accordance with the cruel paragraphs of a dictate which the humane democratic apostles of the world forced upon us as a peace treaty. We witnessed over one million German prisoners of war being retained in confinement for no reason at all for a whole year after the War was ended. We witnessed over one and a half million Germans being torn away from all that they possessed in the territories lying on our frontiers, and being whipped out with practically only what they wore on their backs. We had to endure having millions of our fellow countrymen torn from us without their consent, and without their being afforded the slightest possibility of existence. I could supplement these examples with dozens of the most cruel kind. For this reason we ask to be spared all sentimental talk. The German nation does not wish its interests to be determined and controlled by any foreign nation. France to the French, England to the English, America to the Americans, and Germany to the Germans. We are resolved to prevent the settlement in our country of a strange people which was capable of snatching for itself all the leading positions in the land, and to oust it. For it is our will to educate our own nation for these leading positions. We have hundreds of thousands of very intelligent children of peasants and of the working classes. We shall have them educated -  in fact we have already begun and we wish that one day they, and not the representatives of an alien race, may hold the leading positions in the State together with our educated classes. Above all, German culture, as its name alone shows, is German and not Jewish, and therefore its management and care will be entrusted to members of our own nation. If the rest of the world cries out with a hypocritical mien against this barbaric expulsion from Germany of such an irreplaceable and culturally eminently valuable element, we can only be astonished at the conclusions they draw from this situation. For how thankful they must be that we are releasing these precious apostles of culture, and placing them at the disposal of the rest of the world. In accordance with their own declarations they cannot find a single reason to excuse themselves for refusing to receive this most valuable race in their own countries. Nor can I see a reason why the members of this race should be imposed upon the German nation, while in the States, which are so enthusiastic about these "splendid people," their settlement should suddenly be refused with every imaginable excuse. I think that the sooner this problem is solved the better; for Europe cannot settle down until the Jewish question is cleared up. It may very well be possible that sooner or later an agreement on this problem may be reached in Europe, even between those nations which otherwise do not so easily come together.

The world has sufficient space for settlements, but we must once and for all get rid of the opinion that the Jewish race was only created by God for the purpose of being in a certain percentage a parasite living on the body and the productive work of other nations. The Jewish race will have to adapt itself to sound constructive activity as other nations do, or sooner or later it will succumb to a crisis of an inconceivable magnitude.

One thing I should like to say on this day which may be memorable for others as well as for us Germans: In the course of my life I have very often been a prophet, and have usually been ridiculed for it. During the time of my struggle for power it was in the first instance the Jewish race which only received my prophecies with laughter when I said that I would one day take over the leadership of the State, and with it that of the whole nation, and that I would then among many other things settle the Jewish problem. Their laughter was uproarious, but I think that for some time now they have been laughing on the other side of their face. Today I will once more be a prophet: If the international Jewish financiers in and outside Europe should succeed in plunging the nations once more into a world war, then the result will not be the Bolshevization of the earth, and thus the victory of Jewry, but the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe!

...The nations are no longer willing to die on the battlefield so that this unstable international race may profiteer from a war or satisfy its Old Testament vengeance. The Jewish watchword "Workers of the world unite" will be conquered by a higher realization, namely "Workers of all classes and of all nations, recognize your common enemy!"

hitler speech

'We love Hitler. We love Trump.' As Trump rallied in GR, white supremacists chanted in Howell

HOWELL — As Donald Trump prepared to take the stage in Grand Rapids , his first rally since an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, white supremacists, some of whom voiced support for the former president, were preparing to demonstrate in Howell.

One group chanted "Heil Hitler" during a march Saturday, July 20, that lasted about half an hour, according to city officials. There were about a dozen participants, with faces covered and signs in hand, gathered on the lawn of the Livingston County Historic Courthouse.

The demonstrators marched down Grand River Avenue to the lawn of the Howell Carnegie District Library before a library board member confronted them and told them to leave. They proceeded to their cars while being monitored by the Howell Police Department, which confirmed several of the demonstrators came from outside the community, including Saginaw and Macomb counties.

“Although we recognize their right to free speech, these demonstrators do not reflect the values of the Howell community,” the city wrote a statement, adding it joins the Livingston Diversity Council and Howell Area Chamber of Commerce in "(standing) united in condemning the group's racist ideology."

“We are very proud to be a welcoming and inclusive community, and this is likely why we were targeted by this outside group,” the statement continued. “We would also like to acknowledge all our residents who quickly reacted to this event and made it clear that we do not share their views."

A second demonstration, which saw participants waving flags with a swastika, the term "KKK" and other antisemitic messaging, took place on the I-96 and Latson Road overpass on Saturday, according to photos and video posted in a community Facebook group . It was not immediately clear whether the demonstrators were the same as those who marched downtown.

In a video, the demonstrators repeatedly chanted: "We love Hitler. We love Trump." The photos include a person dressed in all-black who appears to be giving the Nazi salute.

In a post on X (previously Twitter), U.S. Rep Elissa Slotkin wrote, "I'm sorry to see this in Howell, a place where many have worked hard to change the town's image. Racism and antisemitism were on full display from this group, and Howell community leaders are right to call it out."

State Rep. Bob Bezotte, R-Howell, of Michigan’s 50th House District, condemned the messaging from the demonstrators. Bezotte was in attendance at the rally in Grand Rapids on Saturday.

“That’s very disgraceful to our World War II veterans, especially the families and loved ones. .. Thousands of people died for our freedom, and for them to do that is very disgraceful,” Bezotte told The Daily.

Bezotte, a Vietnam War veteran, said he fought “against that type of oppression.”

“Anybody who does that should be ashamed of themselves."

Hitler Campaign Speech

In July 1932 the Nazi Party wins 230 seats in German parliamentary elections, becoming the largest party represented.

Modern propaganda techniques—including strong images and simple messages—helped propel Austrian-born Hitler from a little known extremist to a leading candidate in Germany’s 1932 elections. This clip shows the full pageantry of Nazi rallies and the impassioned delivery style of Adolf Hitler in addressing the crowd, as he promises salvation for the German nation

Trump makes it clear Vance is the heir to MAGA: 'He's going to be with us for a long time'

hitler speech

Former President Donald Trump gave a shout-out to Ohio Sen. JD Vance during his speech at the Republican National Convention making it clear he views Vance as the future of his movement.

Trump said his running mate would be a “great vice president,” which prompted chants of “JD!” in the arena. The former president also acknowledged Vance’s wife, Usha, and noted the couple met at Yale Law School.

“These are two smart people,” Trump said.

Vance who would be 40 by Inauguration Day, would be one of the youngest vice presidents in American history.

He continued: “JD, you’re going to be doing this for a long time. Enjoy the ride.”

Here's the latest on Vance from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee:

JD Vance to hold hometown rally in Middletown on Monday

Vance is scheduled to speak in Middletown, Ohio, one week after Donald Trump selected the 39-year-old senator to be his running mate. During his acceptance speech Wednesday, Vance shared his life story to millions of Americans and tied his upbringing to Trump’s policies.

In Middletown, Vance and his family wrestled with poverty, drug addiction and domestic abuse. His childhood was the subject of his best-selling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.”

Vance kicked off his Senate campaign in Middletown in 2021.

Kamala Harris calls JD Vance’s acceptance speech a 'compelling story' but 'not the full story'

Vice President Kamala Harris at a rally in North Carolina Thursday said Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance’s speech Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention was a “compelling story” but “not the full story.”

“Frankly, what is very telling is what he did not talk about on that stage. He did not talk about Project 2025," referencing the sweeping conservative agenda put together by the Heritage Foundation.

Harris added later that if you claim to stand for unity, you “need to do more than just use the word.”

“You cannot claim you stand for unity if you are pushing an agenda that deprives whole groups of Americans of basic freedoms, opportunity and dignity,” she said.

Was JD Vance ever a Democrat?

Senator JD Vance, the current vice presidential nominee, claims that he was a different person in 2016. Leading up to the presidential election, Vance publicly called Donald Trump “reprehensible,” “a fraud,” and an “idiot.” In a private Facebook message with a former classmate from Yale Law School, he questioned whether Trump could be “America’s Hitler.”

He defined himself as a staunch “Never Trumper” who has since changed his mind .

He suggested voting for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Ohio Sen. JD Vance accepts Republican vice-presidential nomination: Speech highlights

Ohio Sen. JD Vance accepted the vice presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night.

Former President Donald Trump said he chose the Cincinnati Republican as his running mate because he "will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for," referencing workers in key Rust Belt states.

Vance celebrates key swing states in acceptance speech

Vance formally accepted his nomination as the GOP vice-presidential candidate Wednesday. In his address, the conservative senator said the moment is "about all of us," including in the key swing states Republicans are hoping Vance will help attract as VP pick.

“It’s about the auto worker in Michigan, wondering why out of touch politicians are destroying your jobs,” Vance said. “It’s about the factory worker in Wisconsin, who makes things with their hands and is proud of American craftsmanship.”

“It’s about the energy worker in Pennsylvania and Ohio,” he continued, “who doesn’t understand why Joe Biden is willing to buy energy from tinpot dictators across the world when he could buy it from his own citizens right here in our own country.”

In his speech to convention attendees, Vance discussed growing up in Middleton, Ohio, where people “spoke their minds, built with their hands, and loved their God, family, community, and country with their whole hearts.”

“But it was also a place that had been cast aside and forgotten by America’s ruling class in Washington,” Vance said, criticizing Joe Biden's handling of NAFTA, America's relationship with China and the invasion of Iraq when he served in the Senate.

Usha Vance, JD Vance's wife, introduced her husband ahead of his vice-presidential nominee acceptance speech and said she was initially “at a loss” for what to say.

The vice president nominee’s spouse went on to describe how the pair met at law school.

“He was then, as now, the most interesting person I knew,” she said, ahead of JD Vance’s entrance on stage.

Ron Howard movie about JD Vance

When Usha Vance introduced her husband, she made reference to the movie "Hillbilly Elegy" based on his memoir.

“What could I say that hasn’t already been said before?” Usha Vance said. “After all, the man was already the subject of a Ron Howard movie.” Vance's bestselling memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy" was turned into a film.

JD Vance speech excerpts: Focus on family, Rust Belt issues

Vance will begin his speech tonight by crediting Trump with his response to last weekend's assassination attempt and calling for unity − a message that's been hammered throughout the convention this week.

"Even in his most perilous moment, we were on his mind," Vance is expected to say, according to excerpts released before his speech. "His instinct was for us. To call us to something higher. To something greater. To once again be citizens who ask what our country needs of us."

From there, Vance will tie his life to the Trump campaign's efforts to appeal to Rust Belt voters. He plans to highlight some of the GOP's top issues, including immigration, domestic energy production and onshoring manufacturing jobs.

In a more personal moment, Vance will introduce his mother to the crowd, who is attending the convention and 10 years sober.

Biden campaign comes out swinging ahead of JD Vance's speech

President Joe Biden's campaign and the Democratic National Committee went after Vance in a flurry of news releases before his speech.

DNC rapid response director Alex Floyd said Vance "pretends to be a populist" but instead "leaves hard-working Americans behind." The Biden campaign also pointed to the senator's past support of a national abortion ban.

“It's time to take JD Vance seriously when he says he 'certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally,'" Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said. "He is making it explicitly clear that he and Donald Trump will follow through on their Project 2025 plans and ban abortion nationwide if they win come November."

JD Vance to bring special guest tonight: His mom

CNN reported that JD Vance's mother, Beverly, will be a special guest tonight at the convention. Vance wrote about his childhood and his mother's battle with drug addiction in his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy."

Republican delegates anticipate JD Vance's speech

Ahead of Vance's speech Wednesday night, Republican delegates from outside Ohio were eager to hear from Trump's vice-presidential pick.

West Virginia state Sen. Jack Woodrum believes Vance aligns well with Trump, but he wanted to learn more about Vance and his vision for the vice presidency. Catherine Ernsky, an alternate delegate for Connecticut, applauded Vance's decision to visit the picket line during the United Auto Workers strike and said Vance will be loyal to Trump and the American people.

"He has everything we need to help President Trump turn America around," Ernsky said.

First ads out against JD Vance

The anti-Trump Lincoln Project dropped an ad Wednesday highlighting Ohio Sen. JD Vance’s past criticism of the former president.

The roughly 90-second spot, geofenced around the Republican National Committee in Milwaukee, features Donald Trump reading lyrics to “The Snake.” Trump has referred to the song during campaign events to illustrate his position on immigration.

Peppered throughout the ad are Vance’s comments about Trump during the 2016 election cycle, including interviews where he called Trump “noxious” and referred to himself as a “never Trump guy.”

Vance is now one of Trump’s closest allies and has said the former president proved him wrong.

JD Vance speech tonight to focus on his childhood

Vance, who lives in Cincinnati and grew up in Middletown, was expected to recount his life journey during his speech at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night, according to a source familiar with his prepared remarks − the first time millions of Americans will become acquainted with him.

Vance published his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy" in 2016, right as former President Donald Trump was gaining popularity. A personal story of how one man climbed from Rust Belt Ohio to Yale Law School − and now the vice-presidential nomination.

JD Vance on Trump assassination attempt: 'I was pissed'

Vance talked about the attempted assassination against Trump as he spoke to supporters in Milwaukee Wednesday afternoon.

"I was pissed," Vance said. "As soon as I knew he was OK I felt relief and then I was like, 'I cannot believe an assassin tried to take down the president of the United States.' I was mad about it. Was he mad and angry? He called for national unity. He called for calm. He showed leadership."

Donald Trump Jr: There's 'a very high chance' JD Vance could become president in 2028

With his ascension to the 2024 presidential ticket as Donald Trump’s running mate, Vance has vaulted into the role of heir-apparent of the MAGA movement and become an instant White House contender for 2028.

Donald Trump Jr. said the nomination means there’s "a very high chance" Vance could become president in 2028 if he and Trump win in November.

“(Vance is) the one guy in that movement that's a current politician that’s out there that actually, really speaks sort of to the ‘America First’ people,” he said at an event hosted by Axios Tuesday. “It isn’t like we’ll be right back to the establishment. … That's where our base is. That’s where the Republican Party is.”

How to watch the movie 'Hillbilly Elegy'

The movie made about Vance's memoir has been getting more views on Netflix. Here's how to watch it.

What time does Donald Trump speak tonight?

Trump will deliver his keynote address on Thursday evening to wrap up the convention as delegates officially cast their votes to nominate him as the party's presidential candidate.

This story will be updated throughout the day today ahead of Vance's addres s.

JD Vance will recount his life story told in 'Hillbilly Elegy' during RNC speech

hitler speech

After Ohio Sen. JD Vance became Donald Trump's running mate , his memoir skyrocketed to the top of Amazon's bestsellers list.

Vance published "Hillbilly Elegy" in 2016, right as the former president was gaining popularity. A personal story of how one man climbed from Rust Belt Ohio to Yale Law School − and now the vice-presidential nomination − became a textbook for pundits trying to understand a brewing angst among white, working-class voters.

The senator was expected to recount that journey during his speech at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night, according to a source familiar with his prepared remarks − the first time millions of Americans will become acquainted with him.

Some Appalachians loathed "Hillbilly Elegy," prompting an entirely different book that served as a response to Vance's thesis. They argued it reinforced stereotypes about rural Americans and offered easy answers during Trump's first campaign.

But the memoir thrust Vance into the national spotlight − and his celebrity only increased when he clinched the Republican vice-presidential nomination.

"I want people to understand the American Dream as my family and I encountered it," Vance wrote in the book's introduction. "I want people to understand how upward mobility really feels. And I want people to understand something I learned only recently: that for those of us lucky enough to live the American Dream, the demons of the life we left behind continue to chase us."

JD Vance family history

Despite its political overtones, "Hillbilly Elegy" at its heart is a memoir. And Vance's allies say the lessons of his youth would serve him well in the White House.

"Having experienced that trauma in his own family will make him a better officeholder," Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said. "My experience in life is that people who have suffering in their life end up being more compassionate and end up being better able, once they're in office, to relate to other people's struggles."

Vance was born in 1984, named James Donald Bowman after his father. His parents divorced soon after his birth, and when he was 6 years old, his father gave him up for adoption. That led to Vance's first name change: James David Hamel, the surname from his then-stepfather and the middle name a nod to his grandmother's brother.

Vance's grandparents − known to him as Mamaw and Papaw − stabilized an otherwise tumultuous childhood. He moved around Ohio and lived with different family members throughout his youth, including a brief reconnection with his father. When Vance lived in Preble County with his mom, he recalled punching his stepdad to break up a fight between the couple.

His relationship with his mother was particularly difficult. She became addicted to prescription drugs and later heroin. Police arrested her after she threatened to crash her car with Vance inside. After his Papaw died, Vance said he and his sister relied on themselves and each other, making Hamburger Helper or cereal for dinner each night. His grades dropped.

More: 'Growing up the way he did, it made him stronger.' In JD Vance's hometown, beers and joy

When Vance's mom asked him for clean urine, his Mamaw insisted he move in with her.

"Those three years with Mamaw − uninterrupted and alone − saved me," wrote Vance, who took his grandmother's last name as an adult.

How JD Vance's worldview evolved

Vance went on to join the Marines Corps, attend Ohio State University, get a law degree at Yale − where he met his wife, Usha − and build immense wealth as a venture capitalist.

In "Hillbilly Elegy," he also assumed the role of social and political commentator.

Vance said people in his community weren't working, in part, because local manufacturing jobs evaporated. At the same time, he criticized his former neighbors for failing to take control of their own lives and careers. As a cashier in high school, Vance wrote, he resented both wealthy shoppers and food stamp recipients who he said "gamed the welfare system."

Some of the beliefs he espoused − particularly surrounding economic populism − offered a sneak preview of the policies he touts on the campaign trail and in Washington.

Then there's the reason many readers leaned on his memoir during the 2016 election. Vance mused at length about Middletonians who embraced conspiracy theories about Barack Obama and felt they couldn't relate to the president. He admitted to worrying about racial prejudice among his family and friends.

For these reasons and more, he argued to multiple media outlets, Rust Belt America saw an ally in Trump.

"This is deep skepticism of the very institutions of our society. And it's becoming more and more mainstream," Vance wrote. "We can't trust the evening news. We can't trust our politicians. Our universities, the gateway to a better life, are rigged against us. We can't get jobs. You can't believe these things and participate meaningfully in society."

If that line of thinking sounds familiar − a deep-rooted rejection of the establishment − it's because that's now a philosophy Vance openly embraces. Critics say his change of heart on Trump represented a seismic shift in his overall worldview, making him a different man from the one who authored "Hillbilly Elegy."

"He gained fame and wealth by disrespecting Southwest Ohio, and he made national headlines when he compared Donald Trump to Hitler during the 2016 election," Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Cincinnati, said. "The brand of politics Mr. Vance has practiced does not meet the seriousness of this moment."

Trump urges unity after assassination attempt while proposing sweeping populist agenda in RNC finale

Follow AP’s live coverage of the 2024 presidential race.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Donald Trump , somber and bandaged, accepted the GOP presidential nomination on Thursday at the Republican National Convention in a speech that described in detail the assassination attempt that could have ended his life just five days earlier before laying out a sweeping populist agenda , particularly on immigration.

The 78-year-old former president, known best for his bombast and aggressive rhetoric, began his acceptance speech with a softer and deeply personal message that drew directly from his brush with death. Moment by moment, the crowd listening in silence, Trump described standing onstage in Butler, Pennsylvania, with his head turned to look at a chart on display when he felt something hit his ear. He raised his hand to his head and saw immediately that it was covered in blood.

“If I had not moved my head at that very last instant, the assassin’s bullet would have perfectly hit its mark,” Trump said. “And I would not be here tonight. We would not be together.”

Trump’s address, the longest convention speech in modern history at just under 93 minutes, marked the climax and conclusion of a massive four-day Republican pep rally that drew thousands of conservative activists and elected officials to swing-state Wisconsin as voters weigh an election that currently features two deeply unpopular candidates . Sensing political opportunity in the wake of his near-death experience, the often bombastic Republican leader embraced a new tone he hopes will help generate even more momentum in an election that appears to be shifting in his favor.

“The discord and division in our society must be healed. We must heal it quickly. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart,” Trump said, wearing a large white bandage on his right ear, as he has all week, to cover a wound he sustained in the Saturday shooting . “I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America.”

While he spoke in a gentler tone than at his usual rallies, Trump also outlined an agenda led by what he promises would be the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. He repeatedly accused people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally of staging an “invasion.” Additionally, he teased new tariffs on trade and an “America first” foreign policy.

Trump also falsely suggested Democrats had cheated during the 2020 election he lost — despite a raft of federal and state investigations proving there was no systemic fraud — and suggested “we must not criminalize dissent or demonize political disagreement,” even as he has long called for prosecutions of his opponents.

He did not mention abortion rights, an issue that has bedeviled Republicans ever since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federally guaranteed right to abortion two years ago. Trump nominated three of the six justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. Trump at his rallies often takes credit for Roe being overturned and argues states should have the right to institute their own abortion laws.

Nor did he mention the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in which Trump supporters tried to stop the certification of his loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump has long referred to the people jailed for the riot as “hostages.”

Indeed, Trump barely mentioned Biden, often referring only to the “current administration.”

“It was Donald Trump who destroyed our economy, ripped away rights, and failed middle class families,” said Jen O’Malley Dillon, the Biden campaign chair, in a statement after the speech. “Now he pursues the presidency with an even more extreme vision for where he wants to take this country.”

The RNC ends at an uncertain moment in the race

With less than four months to go in the contest, major changes in the race are possible, if not likely.

Trump’s appearance came as Biden, the 81-year-old Democratic incumbent , clings to his party’s presumptive nomination in the face of unrelenting pressure from key congressional allies, donors and even former President Barack Obama, who fear he may be unable to win reelection after his disastrous debate.

Long pressed by allies to campaign more vigorously, Biden is instead in isolation at his beach home in Delaware after having been diagnosed with COVID-19 .

Hours before the balloons were scheduled to rain down on Trump and his family inside the convention hall, Biden deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks appeared nearby in Milwaukee and insisted over and over that Biden would not step aside.

“I do not want to be rude, but I don’t know how many more times I can answer that,” Fulks told reporters. “There are no plans being made to replace Biden on the ballot.”

Strength on the program

Thursday’s RNC program seemed designed to project strength and masculinity in an implicit rebuke of Biden.

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White called Trump “a real American bad ass.” Kid Rock performed a song with the chorus, “Fight, fight!,” echoing the word Trump mouthed on stage in Pennsylvania as Secret Service agents surrounded him. And wrestling icon Hulk Hogan described the former president as “an American hero.”

Hogan drew a raucous response when, standing on the main stage, he ripped off his shirt to reveal a red “Make America Great Again” shirt.

“As an entertainer, I try to stay out of politics,” Hogan said as he briefly broke character. “I can no longer stay silent.”

Like many speakers during the convention, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggested that recent events were divinely inspired and that he wondered “if something bigger is going on.”

“I think it changed him,” Carlson said of the shooting, praising Trump for not lashing out in anger afterward.

“He did his best to bring the country together,” Carlson added. “This is the most responsible, unifying behavior from a leader I’ve ever seen.”

Former first lady Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump, the president’s elder daughter and former senior adviser, joined Trump in the convention hall ahead of his speech, making their first appearances there. Neither woman spoke.

At nearly 93 minutes, the former president’s speech eclipsed the 74 minutes for which he spoke eight years ago, according to the American Presidency Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Republicans leave their convention united

The convention has showcased a Republican Party reshaped by Trump since he shocked the GOP establishment and won over the party’s grassroots on his way to the party’s 2016 nomination. Rivals Trump has vanquished — including Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — put aside their past criticisms and gave him their unqualified support.

Even his vice presidential pick, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s choice to carry his movement into the next generation, was once a fierce critic who suggested in a private message since made public that Trump could be “America’s Hitler.”

Security was a major focus in Milwaukee in the wake of Trump’s near-assassination. But after nearly four full days, there were no serious incidents inside the convention hall or the large security perimeter that surrounded it.

The Secret Service, backed by hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the nation, had a large and visible presence. And during Trump’s appearances each night, he was surrounded by a wall of protective agents wherever he went.

Meanwhile, Trump and his campaign have not released information about his injury or the treatment he received. The former president on Thursday described his story of surviving the attack — and vowed he would not talk about it again.

“I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” Trump told the packed convention hall. The crowd of thousands, which was listening in silence, shouted back, “Yes, you are.”

Associated Press reporters Michelle L. Price, Farnoush Amiri and Adriana Gomez Licon in Milwaukee and Emily Swanson in Washington contributed to this report.

If you wish the sympathy of the broad masses, you must tell them the crudest and most stupid things.

Let me control the textbooks, and I will control the state.

The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.

I don't see much future for the Americans ... it's a decayed country. And they have their racial problem, and the problem of social inequalities ... my feelings against Americanism are feelings of hatred and deep repugnance ... everything about the behaviour of American society reveals that it's half Judaised, and the other half negrified.
