What is the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition?

It is an English essay competition fully endorsed by the Ministry of Education and organised by Sunway Group, the Oxford and Cambridge Society Malaysia, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Sunway University , with support from Sunway PALS.

Sunway Group Deputy Executive Chairman and Jeffrey Cheah Foundation trustee Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman M. Hashim said, “This competition is part of the Group’s effort in nation-building to improve the quality of education across Malaysia by providing a fun and creative platform that allows them to develop a critical and innovative mindset, complete with the soft skills necessary for their future.

Category B - 500 to 650 words

Sunway Education Group Chief Executive Officer Professor Elizabeth Lee said, “We hope the topics we have chosen this year cultivate the art of critical thinking, a highly sought-after skill in graduates and prospective hires. Over and above this, we hope to instil a sense of pride for our country and unity among races in our students.

“The digital age in the wake of COVID-19 has somewhat confined physical communications and social integration opportunities to the backseat. We need to provide the space for discussions such as these to take place to ensure Malaysia continues to be the melting pot of Asia,” she added.

Writing Competition for Young Writers in Malaysia

Inspiring children and teens to write

The Merdeka Writing Competition was founded in 2020 to encourage children and teens to write. Many of the writing competitions in Malaysia are either organised to promote a brand or company or topics that not all children understand like energy and sustainability.

While there’s nothing wrong with those competitions and, in fact, they are lauded for their accomplishments in encouraging children to think and write critically, not as many kids will participate because the topic is non-fiction and it’s tough for them to understand. Additionally, many of those contests are only open to Malaysians.

The Merdeka Writing Competition has been designed with the children in mind. So, the entries must be fiction (which they love) and on themes/topics that they understand (freedom, community, kindness, self-confidence). In addition, this competition is not limited to Malaysians. Children and teens of all nationalities can take part as long as they are in Malaysia. The competition is also open to refugees.

The person behind the Merdeka Writing Competition is former journalist Brigitte Rozario. She is currently a freelance writer, editor and trainer. She founded the Junior Writers Programme in 2018 as a way to get talented writers in Malaysia published. Each year, the programme has a new batch of students who publish an anthology.

Brigitte also uses the Merdeka Writing Competition to source for talents for JWP.

The Merdeka Writing Competition 2023 has concluded. The next one is planned for August 2024.

Sawooly Li, Senior Winner of the QCEC 2022 shares her experience of entering the competition

To mark World Creativity Day 2023, Sawooly Li, Senior Winner of The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition 2022 shares her experience of entering the competition.

What is your favourite book and why?

One of my all-time favourite reads is Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, a graphic memoir depicting her childhood during the Iranian revolution. As a little girl, Marjane’s love for her religion and her country’s history is so sweet and touching. Persepolis really opened my eyes up to the beauty of a different culture and the strength of its people. As Satrapi explains, “I believe that an entire nation should not be judged by the wrongdoings of a few extremists.”

Who is your favourite writer and why?

Recently, I’ve been reading a lot of Jane Austen novels. Whether it be Pride and Prejudice or Emma , her vivid characters and storylines are gripping, and her ideals ahead of their time. From a more modern age, Ocean Vuong has been a great source of inspiration—he has such a powerful way with words and evoking strong emotions.

What inspired you to enter the competition?

As I’m sure many of you can relate to, reading and writing has always been a passion for me. The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition was something that I stumbled across online, but immediately knew I wanted to try. I remember reading several featured entries from past years and being inspired by their creative responses and captivating story-telling. Soon after, I decided to enter a piece of my own!

What was your writing process like?

I spent quite a while brainstorming and planning out my essay. For 2022, the prompt I chose to answer was related to service during the pandemic, so I read online about frontline workers and their stories to draw inspiration. The actual essay writing, however, only took me three days! I find that once I get in the flow, the story begins to shape itself.

What inspired you to write your piece?

Here in New Zealand, we are really lucky to have all this lush indigenous flora and fauna, so I knew I wanted to incorporate these elements into my writing. We also have a rich Māori culture with some beautiful concepts like Manaakitanga, which I centred my piece around. I thought it was a unique but insightful way to reflect on service and the prompt.

My Winner’s Week Experience

Last November, I was fortunate enough to attend a week of activities and celebrations with other talented prize winners from all around the world. From visiting Shakespeare’s birthplace to meeting Mr Speaker’s cat, our trip would have so many amazing experiences and surprises. One of my favourite activities during Winner’s Week was touring Westminster Abbey, the final resting place of kings, queens, notable scientists and famous writers. Whilst standing a few feet above Sir Isaac Newton, or beneath the busts at Poets’ Corner, I was awestruck by the sheer history the Abbey contained. I was mere fingertips away from some of the most influential figures the world had ever seen. My favourite aspect of the week, however, was not any physical place, but instead being able to share these experiences with other young writers from all across the world. Riding in the underground, I loved hearing about life in Singapore or the culture and traditions of India. Walking between one place and the next, we would listen curiously to details on the political turmoil in Uganda and the inflation crisis in Lebanon. This opportunity has truly shifted the perspective with which I view the world—I have learned so much from my peers, and have been inspired by their creativity and passion. Since then, I’ve been determined to continue improving my work. In her speech at Buckingham Palace, The Queen Consort touched on the power of the written word—its ability to evoke emotion and connect people together. In light of this, I hope many more students write and continue to write, and are unafraid to voice what is important to them.

The views and opinions expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of the Royal Commonwealth Society .

Our 2024-25 Student Contest Calendar

Ten challenges that invite teenagers to engage, experiment, reflect and create — via writing, photography, audio, video and more.

Six photos including of a boy wearing an animal headdress, two football players, two boys doing planks, a group of girls dancing with their arms around one another, a girl drinking out of a tumbler, a group of children skipping rocks.

By The Learning Network

Our annual Contest Calendar is probably the single most powerful thing we publish all year. Teachers tell us they plan their classes around our challenges, and tens of thousands of teenagers around the globe participate by creating narratives, reviews, videos, opinion pieces, podcasts, illustrations, photo essays and more.

For us, these contests are an honor and a joy to host. We love learning from young people — about what moves them and makes them mad, what intrigues and confuses and delights and defines them.

This year, we are bringing back some recent and longtime favorites, as well as introducing a few new challenges.

To begin, we have two options this fall in response to the U.S. election, though students around the globe are welcome. In September, we open with a series of special forums that invite teenagers to have thoughtful conversations about their civic and political identities, values and beliefs. Then, if they choose, they can work alone or with others to make something in response — whether in writing, video, audio or visual art. (Students can participate in one or both challenges, and we have a related invitation for educators .)

In the spring, we’re offering “My List,” a twist on our long-running review contest. This time, students can choose any collection of three to five works of art or culture to group in some way and then tell us why we should — or shouldn’t — check them out.

We’ll be posting the full rules and guidelines for each contest here when it opens. but for now you can look at the related resources we’ve provided, as well as last year’s rules, which will largely remain the same for our returning contests.
