Kalyan Ram Nandamuri scored a big hit with 'Bimbisara' last year. His 'Amigos' which released at the beginning of 2023 failed at the box-office but he is back once again with another interesting movie titled 'Devil'. The promotional content showed a lot of promise and it is released in theatres now under decent expectations. Let us see how the movie turned out.

In 1947, a Zamindar's daughter gets murdered at Rasapadu of Madras Providence. All of them believe that Zamindar himself killed his daughter due to the girl having an illegal affair. The police arrest him as well but British secret agent Devil (Kalyan Ram) who arrives to investigate the case tries to go quite deep which results in him uncovering many secrets. We get to know that Devil has other intentions for visiting Rasapadu. What happened to the case? Who is Devil? What is his aim? All these questions and their answers form the rest of the story.

The story of Subhash Chandrabose during Indian independence is a huge mystery to everyone. There are a lot of versions about what happened to this valiant hero in the history books. These stories are great to listen and read as they are engaging, mysterious and emotional. A lot of filmmakers made movies based on these theories. But the success formula lies in making it story emotional enough to connect with the current generation of youth. Nikhil came up 'SPY' a few months back and it revolved around Bose's character. The trailer looked wonderful but the movie was quite pale in comparison to it. Even 'Devil' revolves around a fictional story spun around the Subhash Chandrabose character. But it is not a surface-level story like 'SPY'. We can see the effort in terms of story writing and taking. But 'Devil' team failed in making the movie emotionally relatable to the audience. 'Devil' ended up being a regular action thriller that entertains people but it did not generate the required emotions to make the audience cheer for the lead character.

'RRR' is an unreal fictional story. Alluri Seetharamaraju and Komuram Bheem are from different time zones but they weaved a story around the two characters and what might happen if they meet. But Rajamouli made sure that the emotions are taken to the next level and drama is quite engaging throughout. But it is where the 'Devil' faltered as the sincere efforts are clearly visible. There is no deviation in terms of the narration and the makers did not add any commercial elements that dilute the storytelling. They stayed true to the story but the emotion went missing in this film. It starts off as a murder mystery and deals with a lot of layers which leads to a big point. But the thread woven around the murder mystery is not so engaging and the secret agent's investigations looks quite ordinary. At a time when, spine-chilling murder mysteries are shown on OTT platforms, the investigation in 'Devil' leaves a lot to be desired. the curiosity in the movie starts when the movie turns towards Bose's character. The murder mystery stops after that point which makes it irrelevant and this makes the first half an okay affair.

The entire highlights of 'Devil' lie in the second half. Though the twist in the hero's character is not something unexpected, the way it is executed and the high it gives impresses the audience big time. The action sequences at that point is quite good. The last 30 minutes runs with good speed and compelling twists. But one wonders what the purpose of this movie was at the end. The patriotic element in the story is not elevated properly and the independence movement not bringing emotion in the movie is the maker's fault. The characters should have been more emotionally treated so that the audience would have connected to them. The second is better in comparison with the first half and makes the film a decent watch. 'Devil' is a timepass watch that is two and a half hours long but don't forget to keep your expectations in check.

Performances:

Kalyan Ram delivered a convincing performance as Devil. Though his character and acting appear quite regular at the beginning, the impact gets better as the movie progresses. His character gets good elevations in the second half and Kalyan Ram elevates his performance too. His efforts can be seen in the action episodes of this film. Samyuktha Menon impresses once again. He plays a vital character and looks the part. She did well in the scope given to her role. Mark Bennington is quite good as a British officer. Malavika Nair is just okay in a key role. One expects more from her but she is not up to the mark. The Kannada actor who played the role of Samudra was amazing. Nithin Mehta, Shafi, Satya and others did their roles with conviction.

Technicians:

Harshavardhan Rameswar who delivered a stunning work for 'Animal' recently and showcased his talent once again with 'Devil'. His work is quite impactful. 'Maye Chesi' song is pleasing visually and audio-wise too. The background score elevated a lot of scenes but it was way too loud at places as well. Sounder Rajan's cinematography is very good. The visuals are very attractive. The art director and other technicians worked very hard for this film. The production values are top-notch. Writer Srikanth Vissa seems to have put in a lot of effort into the script but it is not quite impactful. Though the screenplay is interesting, the emotion went missing completely. Abhishek Nama is okay as a director. He did not deviate from the story but failed to involve and engage the people.

Verdict: Devil – Thrills OK But Emotion Not OK!

Telugu Industry has always been very welcoming to our Tamil heroes, including Rajini, Kamal, Suriya, Karthi, Vikram, Jiiva and Vishal all having a market and solid hits to their credit. Among the leading heroes in Tamil, Vijay, Ajith and Simbu have not be able to give a Rs.10 Crore+ grosser in Telugu so far. Tupaki  (Telugu dubbed version of Thuppakki)  may finally be able to give Vijay the much awaited lucky break in Telugu. Thanks to good reviews and lack of competition (since much-hyped Anushka and Nagarjun starrer  Damarukam expected to release on Diwali was delayed for the third time due to financial reasons ), Tupaki  has taken the spot light and expected to bring in good collections in Andhra Pradesh . 

Let's look at the excerpts from media reviews and see what Telugu critics are saying about Tupaki and Vijay's performance,

• Post Noon gave thumbs up for Tupaki and rated it 3.5/5. The review concluded it’s won’t blow your brains away, but it’s definitely worth watching. Reviewer Hemant called Vijay as the backbone of the film and thought he was fabulous as an army officer. 
• 123Telugu rated it 3.5 out of 5 and called the movie hits the bulls eye. The final verdict was "A stylish Vijay, some exceptional thrilling moments and  edge  of the seat action makes this film surely worth a watch. Finally, one can say that yet another Tamil hero has successfully managed to capture the hearts of Telugu audience."
• Tupaki hits the target called GreatAndhra with a rating of 3/5. It went on to say the film stands as a platform for Vijay's career in Tollywood. This is not a Diwali Thupaki but a real one with ample bullets in it. 
• Jeevi of Idlebrain rated it 3.25/5/ and said AR Murugadoss who disappointed with 7th Sense strikes back with Tupaki. This popular reviewer also appreciated Vijay for being suave and sophisticated in the role that need brains. 
• Gulte.com complimented Vijay for doing a neat job as the lead man and went on to say "despite having no image in Andhra Pradesh, people would love to see him as the lead. His sweet yet powerful performance is the reason for it. Vijay is yet to score a hit in Telugu and this time he has every chance to register his first success." 

Based on the unanimous positive reviews from public and media, Tupaki in all probability should give Vijay a strong entry into Telugu market.

Tupaki Review

Behind the Movie Tupaki: While AR Murugadoss has a brand value in Andhra Pradesh, it is the presence of Vijay which could keep the hype surrounding this project a bit low. However, it is too late for a review from our side and sorry for that. Let us see, whether this 'Tupaki' has enough ammunition in it to trigger the BO or not?

In the Movie Tupaki: Jagdeesh (Vijay) is an intelligent Indian Army Officer off to Mumbai to enjoy a vacation. Family of Jagdeesh is in hunt for a right bride and they find Nisha (Kajal Agarwal) as an apt match. Although reluctant early, once Jagdeesh understands the real side of Nisha, the love track deepens. In this mean time of romance, accidentally Jagdeesh happens to bump into a sleeper cell terrorist in a local bus. Into action, Jagdeesh teams up with his old batchmates to upset the terrorist plan of 12 serial bomb blasts planned in Mumbai. Frustrated by this, the Master mind and terrorist head behind (Vidyut Jamwal) enters into scene to take it face to face with Jagdeesh. Did Vidyut's plan to lay a trap for Jadgeesh was successful? Was Jagdeesh enough talented to put an end to sleeper cell network forms the rest.

Values of the Movie Tupkai: The one invaluable quality AR Murugadoss blessed with is, his knack of commercializing aky kind of subject. In fact, none could have made this kind of gripping action thriller with a simple sleeper cell terrorist concept which isn't touched in depth by any director in India. The kind of hold Muruga has on screen-play writing was evidential throughout the second half. Our Telugu audience would easily forget that we are watching a Tamil to Telugu dubbed film because of the intensity packed. Meanwhile, the romantic track weaved into the story is actually a weak thread which distrubed the actual soul and feel. Cinematography of Santosh Sivan is just top notch and Sreekar Prasad could have been better in the boring love track. After enjoying extra-ordinary tunes and exhilarating back-ground from Harris Jayaraj, we expect much more than this. Dialogues were just okay. Production values of Gemini FIlm Circuit and SVR Media are worth appreciable.           

Performance wise, Vijay's character has been underplayed for major time and that has become the blessing in disguise. Compared to past flicks like 'Snehithudu,' the way Vijay directed his energies into simple yet stylish action episodes made him a winner. Next in the list comes is Vidyut Jamwal. Utilizing the biggest of opportunity offered, Vidyut's muscular body and handsome looks give a new flavor to villainsm. The less we speak, it would be more better about Kajal who is just portioned for songs and romance. Of the remaining we can only remind, Sathyan and Jairam who were just fit to their comic portions. 

Out of the Movie Tupaki: The best memories which striked my thoughts watching 'Tupaki' were about Venkatesh's 'Gharshana.' Director Muruga has cooked a recipee which is similar to Gautham. Yet, both are different in their own versions. Scripts like 'Tupaki' need more of the hardwork on visualization. When you are presenting the same on screen in the form of mind games between antagonist and protagonist, viewers should feel the goose bumps else your attempts go in vain. When we have some one like Muruga leading from front, even the expression face like Vijay too becomes engaging. Same happened here and Vijay might find some part of his dream to form a market in Tollywood will be fulfilled. 

While first half is a bit entertaining with romantic track, introduction to sleeper cells in Mumbai, narration changes the gear and suddenly we get too much involved into the bloodshed of pre-interval episodes. Then second half is entirely the magic of Murugadoss while the tasteless love episodes and placement of songs pulls down the anxiety. So, overall the graph goes up and down till a much more desired climax.

Commercially, 'Tupaki' might be a profitable project in Tamil because of Vijay factor. When target audience for this kind of action thrillers form a low minortiy core, it is difficult to anticipate on where the Telugu version will land. For regular audience, think before getting in and for hardcore Muruga admirers, don't miss this. He has got ammunition right this time.

Comedian, Bittiri Sathi has turned hero for the first time with a film called Tupaki Ramudu which has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Tupaki Ramudu(Satthi) is an orphan who always helps his villagers irrespective of him facing insults. Seeing his good nature, the villagers fix his wedding. But sadly, the girl puts a condition that she will only marry Ramudi if he gets educated in life. Left with no choice, Ramudu approaches Anita(Priya) to help him in his studies. In this process, they fall in love with each other. What will Satthi do now? What will happen to his other marriage proposal? Whom will Satthi marry? That forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Bittiri Satthi makes a confident debut as an actor. He dances, fights, and does well in all the emotional scenes. He also mouths the Telangana slang with ease and carries the film on his shoulders.

Yet another highlight of the film is heroine Priya who did a good job in her role. She has good screen presence and did well in her key character. The actors who did the role of Satthi’s friends also did an impressive job. The message showcased in the film is also good.

Minus Points:

The basic point of the film is also quite silly. There is no seriousness in the plot and the first half is filled with scenes that have no seriousness at all. Upon this, forced comedy irritates the audience.

Certain scenes created to showcase Satthi in a comic role are bad and have been written in a disappointing manner. There was a good scope to elevate the content with the heroine’s role but he failed to do it. There are many unnecessary scenes that kill the mood of the viewers and make things tedious.

Technical Aspects:

The production values of the film are good. Editing is bad and does not have any seriousness. Lyrics are decent and so was the whole production design. The camerawork was decent and the music was just about okay. Coming to the director Prabhakar, he has done a pathetic job with the film. His narration lack seriousness as he makes a mess of the storyline.

On the whole. Bittiri Satthi’s debut as a solo hero is quite disappointing. Even though Satthi tries hard to entertain, the other factors in the film are boring and have been narrated in a silly and routine manner making this film a below-par flick this weekend. Ignore it happily.

I’m not sure I knew of anyone, Borderlands fan or not, who believed that the movie adaptation of the game was going to be good, based on everything from casting to trailers. Now as reviews come in ahead of its release tomorrow, those fears have been validated. And then some.

As I write this, the Borderlands movie has a flat 0% on Rotten Tomatoes . No positive reviews whatsoever ( Update : A single positive review has come in raising it to a 3%), and the ones that are in are not just negative, but brutal . Here’s a sampling:

• Discussing Film: “The fans deserve a lot better than whatever director Eli Roth is trying to do with Borderlands. This is the video game movie curse at its worst.”
• Men’s Journal: “If Borderlands doesn't stop studio executives from salivating at the sight of every single IP that comes across their desks, nothing will.”
• Next Best Picture : “It’s impressive how Roth can elicit the poor quality of 2000s video game adaptation energy yet somehow forget the discernable sense of fun or style that made even those terrible movies stand out.”
• IGN : “Borderlands is an abysmal waste of a beloved franchise that takes a kooky band of murderous misfits and drains the life out of their first adventure together.”

It’s true there are not many reviews in yet, and the score may tick up, but everything I’ve seen outside of some video game influencers who attended premieres (or are literally extras in the movie) has been relentlessly negative, and I would be surprised to find more than a handful of positive reviews come in when all is said and done. If any.

A 0% on Rotten Tomatoes is of course as low as you can go. If we are looking at the worst-scored video game movies ever made, that list would now be (Updated list with the 4%):

• Alone in the Dark (2005) – 1%
• Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) – 3%
• House of the Dead (2003) – 3%
• Borderlands (2024) – 3%
• In the Name of the King (2007) – 4%
• Bloodrayne (2005) – 4%
• Mortal Kombat Annihilation- 4%
• Silent Hill Revelation (2012) – 8%
• Hitman Agent: 47 (2015) – 8%
• Postal (2007) – 9%

I put the year there so you can see that most of these ultra-terrible ones are in a decade or so when making a good video game adaptation was borderline impossible and the only people trying were directors like Uwe Boll half the time. As of late, we have seen very solid live action video game adaptations on both film (Sonic) and TV (The Last of Us, Fallout), and Borderlands seems to be a 10-15 year step backward.

I do expect it to rise above a zero percent. There are so many critics on Rotten Tomatoes of questionable quality and taste that probably someone will like it and knock it above some of these (I am one of those critics, so no judgement), but that has not happened at the time of this writing.

Who saw this coming? Everyone. Everyone did. And here we are.

Update (8/10): We have 92 reviews in now, and Borderlands has gone from 0% to 3% to now settling at around 10%. This puts it outside much higher on the “worst video game adaptations ever” list, which would now look like

• Borderlands (2024) - 10%

Of course there is absolutely no pretending a 10% is good. I do agree, however, that it does not deserve to be quite as low as that terrible decade of Uwe Boll movies and a few other very poor ones. Like no, this is definitely not on par with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

I have indeed now seen the movie myself, and a 10% is something I can get behind. My own negative review is now on Rotten Tomatoes, and here’s an excerpt:

“This is neither a good Borderlands movie or nor a good movie, period. It feels like Gearbox and Eli Roth tried to split the difference here, making a mass-appeal PG-13 action film but gesturing vaguely at the games to try to get that crowd to show up too.

But the end result is throwing the Borderlands games at a wall, watching them shatter, and gluing back together a handful of mildly recognizable pieces.”

I said in the piece that the casting of Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchett are big problems, as expected. Hart mostly acts like a barely toned-down version of his usual self, and is nothing like game Roland. Blanchett is of course normally a great actress but a 30 year or so age increase from Lilith is bizarre, and also makes no sense within the confines of the film as actresses close to her age appear to remember her as a child.

This is a franchise killer. Gearbox had big plans for a Borderlands cinematic universe that is clearly going nowhere after this. And given how this went, that is fully justified.
