തികച്ചും കാല്പനികമായ ഒരു പ്രണയലേഖനത്തില്‍ ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന വൈക്കം മുഹമ്മദ് ബഷീറിന്റെ ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തമായ നോവല്‍, വിഭിന്ന മതവിശ്വാസികളായ സാറാമ്മയുടെയും കേശവന്‍ നായരുടെയും പ്രണയകഥ പറയുകയാണ്. 1940-കളിലെ കേരളമാണ് കഥയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലം. കേശവന്‍ നായര്‍- പേര് സൂചിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നു പോലെ നായര്‍ ജാതിയില്‍ പെട്ട ഒരു ബാങ്ക് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്‍ ആണ്. സാറാമ്മ- ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ സമുദായത്തില്‍ ജനിച്ച സുന്ദരിയും അവിവാഹിതയും തൊഴില്‍രഹിതയുമായ ഒരു യുവതിയാണ്. എന്തും വരട്ടെയെന്ന പ്രകൃതക്കാരിയായ സാറാമ്മയുടെ വീടിന്റെ മുകളിലെ നിലയിലാണ് കേശവന്‍ നായര്‍ വാടകയ്ക്ക് താമസിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. സാറാമ്മയോട് കലശലായ പ്രേമം തോന്നിയ കേശവന്‍ നായര്‍ അത് അവരെ അറിയിയ്ക്കാനായി അവര്‍ക്കൊരു കത്തെഴുതുന്നു. ഇതില്‍ നിന്നാണ് പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ശീര്‍ഷകം ഉടലെടുക്കുന്നത്.

On Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’S Premalekhanam

There are some private pleasures we all indulge in. The mere fact that we are the ones that have been fortunate enough to indulge in these, not always because of our merit but because of the situation we were placed in, takes us to cloud nine. The inability of others to do the same gives us silent satisfaction. Basheer is one such pleasure. His inimitable style of narration, sarcastic and sometimes touching humour-sense and untranslatable language makes him Malayalee’s own.

Love is an emotion that the wordsmith would find hard to convey. It is simple but complexly so. It is sweet, but bitterly so. This emotion, that has made many great writers fret in vain, is what Basheer’s Premalekhanam, thrives on. It is not the passionate scenes, or the beautiful dialogues adoring other love stories, which makes this story stand out; but the simplicity and the colloquial humor that adores the prose. This poignant love story leaves an ever-lasting impression on the readers mind, the way it is stated.

The plot is simple…man meets girl-falls in live-man proposes-girl refuses-man insists-girl agrees. A thousand love stories have had this same plot. But none can match Basheer in terms of timing and humour. Humour…that pinches of salt that can be found scattered throughout Basheer’s works, and which brings out the real essence in a way only he can when savored. The presentation and the way the writer leads us from the beginning, in one smooth beautiful stroke, to the end is unparalleled anywhere else. It begins, as suggested in the name, from a Premalekhanam (love letter) that the hero (Keshavan Nair) writes to his lover (Saramma).

In every fairy tale story there is always the Mr. Prince Charming and the Princess that were made for each other, they never really had struggles and they were the ones who were always happy, they had that “happily ever after” that everyone wishes for, But in this story its just a little different. This is the same letter in which the story ends. For such a long story, there are only four characters in the film. Keshavan Nair, Saramma, her father and her stepmother. In between the beginning and the end, Basheer does manage to convey an array of short fragments of opinions from opposing dowry to caste system and promoting inter-religious marriages.

‘Sthree double double double krura hrudaya’

One of the main reasons for the non-popularity of Basheer outside the Malayalam speaking community is the difficulty in translating into other languages the author’s works. Basheer was undoubtedly a people’s writer. The style of writing he adopted was in such colloquial Malayalam that most of his greatest fans were and are the most ordinarily poor people. Premalekhanam is essentially a realistic love story between an ordinary woman and a man, not a happy story; the problems of the ordinary people are conveyed beautifully, the cruel stepmother, the uncaring father, dowry etc. The essential message conveyed is that we are not alone, however uncared-for we are; there will always be someone to love us, someone who cares for us, someone who cries for us.

മലയാളത്തിലെ വിശ്വവിഖ്യാതമായ പ്രണയകഥകളിലൊന്നാണ് ബാല്യകാലaപ്രിയപ്പെട്ട സാറാമ്മേ, ‘ജീവിതം യൗവനതീക്ഷ്ണവും, ഹൃദയം പ്രേമസുരഭിലവുമായിരിക്കുന്ന, ഈ അസുലഭകാലഘട്ടത്തെ എന്റെ പ്രിയ സുഹൃത്ത് എങ്ങനെ വിനിയോഗിക്കുന്നു? എന്നു തുടങ്ങുന്ന തികച്ചും കാല്പനികമായ ഒരു പ്രണയലേഖനത്തില്‍ ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന വൈക്കം മുഹമ്മദ് ബഷീറിന്റെ ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തമായ നോവല്‍, വിഭിന്ന മതവിശ്വാസികളായ സാറാമ്മയുടെയും കേശവന്‍ നായരുടെയും പ്രണയകഥ പറയുകയാണ്. 1940-കളിലെ കേരളമാണ് കഥയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലം. കേശവന്‍ നായര്‍- പേര് സൂചിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നു പോലെ നായര്‍ ജാതിയില്‍ പെട്ട ഒരു ബാങ്ക് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്‍ ആണ്. സാറാമ്മ- ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ സമുദായത്തില്‍ ജനിച്ച സുന്ദരിയും അവിവാഹിതയും തൊഴില്‍രഹിതയുമായ ഒരു യുവതിയാണ്. എന്തും വരട്ടെയെന്ന പ്രകൃതക്കാരിയായ സാറാമ്മയുടെ വീടിന്റെ മുകളിലെ നിലയിലാണ് കേശവന്‍ നായര്‍ വാടകയ്ക്ക് താമസിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. സാറാമ്മയോട് കലശലായ പ്രേമം തോന്നിയ കേശവന്‍ നായര്‍ അത് അവരെ അറിയിയ്ക്കാനായി അവര്‍ക്കൊരു കത്തെഴുതുന്നു. ഇതില്‍ നിന്നാണ് പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ശീര്‍ഷകം ഉടലെടുക്കുന്നത്. കേശവന്‍ നായരുടെ കാല്പനിക പ്രണയത്തിന് സാറാമ്മ ‘ഉരുളയ്ക്ക് ഉപ്പേരി’ പോലെ നല്‍കുന്ന മറുപടികള്‍, സാറാമ്മയുടെ ദുരിതപൂര്‍ണ്ണമായ ജീവിതാവസ്ഥകള്‍, കേശവന്‍ നായരുടെ കറകലരാത്ത പ്രണയം എന്നിവ സാമൂഹ്യാവസ്ഥകളോടു ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തി ഈ നോവലില്‍ ആവിഷ്‌കരിക്കുന്നു.സഖി. ഒന്നും ഒന്നും ചേര്‍ന്നാല്‍ ഇമ്മിണിബല്യ ഒന്നാവുമെന്ന മഹാഗണിതത്തെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച നോവലാണിത്. സുഹ്റയുടെയും മജീദിന്റെയും ബാല്യകാലാനുഭവങ്ങളിലൂടെ വികസിക്കുന്ന നോവല്‍ വായനക്കാരനില്‍ ആത്മനൊമ്പരമുണര്‍ത്തുന്ന സ്‌നേഹഗാഥയാണ്. വാക്കില്‍ ചോരപൊടിയുന്ന നോവല്‍ എന്നാണ് ബാല്യകാലസഖിയെ ് പ്രശസ്ത നിരൂപകനായ എം പി പോള്‍ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചത്. ചലച്ചിത്രമായും നാടകമായും അനവധി മാധ്യമങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ഭാവാന്തരമുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്.
