oaa problem solving activities

The PE Umbrella Podcast, the ONLY Primary PE podcast in the world!

Welcome to episode 138 and a return to bringing you another brilliant Primary PE Resource .

I am fired up to bring you this resource activity, just in time for the festive season starting 😀 Crack the Codes is a team building, communication-focused activity that is perfect for a unit of OAA work and can be played indoors or out. I have used this activity with students in Year 3 all the way up to adults! It could even be used in KS1 in my honest opinion.

During this episode, I will talk you through the setup of the activity, the layers/progressions & how to make the activity easier or harder. It is entirely up to you, the teacher, what your umbrella focus for this activity is, but you can quite easily draw out discussion points from the Blue (physical), Red (communication) or the Green (cognitive) domains before, during or after the activity itself. To assist you in your listening, click on the button below to download your FREE 4-page PDF of the game, or alternatively, head on over to the resources section of the website. This downloadable includes an activity sheet, codes to crack, a key words poster and a reflection sheet.

So what are you waiting for? Come on over, and join me under The PE Umbrella!

So what are you waiting for?  Come and give this Primary PE Resource a try with your class this week!  If you do, then please leave me some feedback by tweeting me (@thepeumbrella) or emailing me at [email protected].

Year 3 OAA Lesson 2

Learning intentions.

  • To identify basic symbols on a map
  • To complete tasks using symbols and maps
  • To work with others to complete simple map reading tasks

Success Criteria

  • I can explain what symbols on a map represent
  • I can match symbols on a map to real life objects
  • I can work as part of a team to complete a task

Bibs, cones, beanbags, printed resources (attached to the lesson plan)

Curriculum Links

NC Work as an individual to negotiate a map reading activity.

L Define written symbols and their meanings in relation to real life objects/locations.

N Establish distances between symbols on a map by estimating the scale.

Starter Activity

Foxes and farmer

  • Split the class in half
  • One half of the class has bibs or tags tucked into their waistband, they are the foxes
  • The objective is for the farmers to catch the ‘foxes tail.’
  • Start with foxes & farmers both facing in the same direction spread out along a line
  • The farmer must catch the foxes tail before they cross a designated line
  • All running should take place in a straight line moving forward
  • Foxes should NOT dodge to avoid their tail being taken
  • Repeat several times giving pupils a chance to be foxes and farmers
  • Challenge chasers by giving the foxes a distance head start

Colour Cards – The objective of the game is for the team to complete their colour card (see supporting resource card) in the quickest time possible. The colour card shows pupils colours as symbols; you can use coloured cones and/or beanbags to complete the task. You will require 9 objects of each colour in the colour zone, so there is  enough for each group to replicate their colour card.

  • Split the class into 5 teams of 6 or less
  • Each team sits behind a marker/cone/line
  • The first player must run up and collect the colour card for their team and bring it back to the group
  • The next person in the team must run to the ‘colour zone’ & collect & object of the corresponding colour on the first colour on the card and place it in front of the team
  • Players run out and collect a coloured cone or beanbag until they have replicated the coloured symbols on their card in a line in front of their team
  • Rotate the cards around so each team replicates each colour card

oaa problem solving activities

Symbol Match – this can be performed competitively or non-competitively depending on the needs of the class.

  • Each group of 3 will require 16 word cards, 16 symbol cards, and a map
  • In front of the group is a pile of word cards, the first person takes the top card, e.g. ‘Wall’, they must run out and find the corresponding wall symbol and bring it back to the group
  • Place the map a short distance back from the symbols cards, so on the first attempts, pupils can consult the map
  • Play twice before removing the map and attempting to match the word cards with the symbols correctly.
  • Allow pupils time to discuss and plan before taking part in the activity

oaa problem solving activities

We are learning...

to work with others to complete map-reading tasks.

Teaching Points

Encourage pupils to talk to one another in the planning time before activity 1 & 2—what things might they need to think consider? E.g. which members of the team are sure of symbols they know etc. so they go first.

Key Questions

  • Do the symbols give us any clues as to what real life object/area they might represent?
  • Why is it useful to have symbols for maps that everyone understands?
  • Why is it important to listen to others in the group when trying to complete a task?
