Bonus Video ▶ How to make a 10-minute presentation

If you feel like a 5-minute presentation would be too stifling, stretch it to 10! Here's how to do that...

Remember, less is more, except when it comes to ice cream.

That's why amid hundreds of methods to use, we've boiled it down into these four simple steps to make a killer 5-minute presentation.

Let's jump right in!

#1 - Choose your topic

Wooden blocks spelling the word topic with a on/off block at the start. Use a 5-minute presentation topic list to choose the right topic for your short presentation

How do you know if that topic is "the one" for you? For us, the right topic ticks everything on this checklist:

✅ Stick to one key point. It's unlikely you'll have time to address more than one topic, so limit yourself to one and don’t go over it!

✅ Know your audience. You don't want to waste time covering information they already know. Everyone knows 2 plus 2 is 4, so move on and never look back.

✅ Go with a simple topic. Again, explaining something that requires time should be off the checklist since you can't cover it all.

✅ Don't dwell on unfamiliar topics to minimise the time and effort you spend preparing the presentation. It should be something you already have on your mind.

Need some help finding the right topic for your short presentation? We've got 30 topics with different themes to captivate your audience.

#2 - Create your slides

Unlike the long presentation format in which you can have as many slides as you want, a five-minute presentation typically has significantly fewer slides. Because imagine each slide would take you roughly 40 seconds to 1 minute to go through, that's already five slides in total. Not much to think about, eh?

However, your slide count doesn't matter more than the essence each slide contains . We know that it's tempting to pack it full of text, but keep in mind that you should be the subject your audience focuses on, not a wall of text.

Check these examples below.

Make the text bold to highlight important parts and use italics primarily to denote titles and the names of particular works or objects to allow that title or name to stand out from the surrounding sentence. The underlining text also helps draw attention to it, but it is most commonly used to represent a hyperlink on a webpage.

You obviously saw the second example and thought there's no way you're going to read through this on the big screen.

The point is this: keep slides straight, concise, and short, as you've got 5 minutes only. 99% of the info should come from your mouth.

When you’re keeping text minimal, don't forget to befriend visuals , as they can be your best sidekicks. Startling statistics, infographics, short animations, pictures of whales, etc., all are great attention grabbers and help you sprinkle your unique trademark and personality on each slide.

And how many words should be there in a 5-minute speech script? It mainly depends on the visuals or data you show in your slides and also your speech speed. However, a 5-minute speech is roughly 700 words long.

Secret tip: Go the extra length by making your presentation interactive. You can add a live poll , Q&A section , or quiz that illustrates your points and leaves a lasting impression on the audience.

#3 - Get the timing right

When you're looking at this, we only have one thing to say: STOP PROCRASTINATING! For such a short presentation, there's virtually no time for "ah", "uh" or short pauses, because every moment counts. So, plan the timing of each section with military precision.

How should it look? Check out the example below:

  • 30 seconds on the introduction . And no more. If you spend too much time on the intro, your main part will have to be sacrificed, which is a no-no.
  • 1 minute on stating the problem . Tell the audience the problem you are trying to solve for them, i.e., what they are here for.
  • 3 minutes on the solution . This is where you deliver the most essential info to the audience. Tell them what they need to know, not what is "nice to have". For example, if you're presenting how to make a cake, list each item's ingredients or measurement, as that’s all essential information. However, additional information like icing and presentation is not essential and can be cut.
  • 30 seconds on the conclusion . This is where you reinforce your main points, wrap up and have a call to action.
  • You can end with a small Q&A .  Since it isn’t technically a part of the 5-minute presentation, you can take as much time as you want to answer the questions.

How many times should you practice a 5-minute speech? To nail these timings down, make sure you practice religiously. A 5-minute presentation requires more practice than a regular one, as you won’t have as much wiggle room or chance for improvisation.

Also, don't forget to check your equipment to ensure everything runs smoothly. When you’ve only got 5 minutes, you don't want to waste any time fixing the mic,  presentation, or other equipment.

#4 - Deliver your presentation

this picture describes a women who is delivering her 5 minute presentation in a confident manner

Imagine you're watching an exciting video but it keeps.lagging.every.10.seconds. You’d be super annoyed, right? Well, so would your audience if you keep confusing them with abrupt, unnatural speech.

It's normal to feel pressured to talk because you feel every minute is precious. But crafting the convo in a way that makes the crowd understand the assignment is so much more important.

Our first tip for delivering a great presentation is to practice flowing . From the introduction to the conclusion, every part needs to connect and link with each other like glue.

Go between the sections repeatedly (remember to set the timer). If there's any part in which you feel the urge to speed up, then consider trimming it down or articulating it differently.

Our second tip is for reeling in the audience from the first sentence .

There are countless ways to start a presentation . You can get factual with a shocking, on-topic fact or mention a humorous quote that gets your audience laughing and melting away their (and your) tension.

Secret tip: Don't know if your 5-minute presentation makes an impact? Use a feedback tool to collect the audience's sentiment right away. It takes minimal effort, and you avoid losing valuable feedback along the way.

Use a feedback tool such as AhaSlides to collect the audience's sentiment right away.

5 Common Mistakes When Giving a 5-Minute Presentation

We overcome and adapt through trial and error, but it’s easier to avoid rookie mistakes if you know what they are👇

  • Going way past your allotted time slot. Since the 15 or 30-minute presentation format has long dominated the scene, keeping it brief is difficult. But unlike the long format, which gives you a bit of flexibility on time, the audience knows exactly what 5 minutes feels like and, therefore will expect you to condense the information within the time limit.
  • Having a decade-long introduction. Rookie mistake. Spending your precious time telling people who you are or what you’re going to do isn’t the best plan. As we said, we’ve got a bunch of beginning tips for you here .
  • Don't dedicate enough time to prepare. Most people skip the practice part since they think it’s 5 minutes, and they can quickly fill that up, which is an issue. If in a 30-minute presentation, you can get away with “filler” content, the 5-minute presentation doesn’t even allow you to pause for more than 10 seconds.
  • Devote too much time explaining complicated concepts. A 5-minute presentation doesn’t have room for that. If one point you’re explaining needs to link to other points for further elaboration, it’s always a good idea to revise it and dig deeper into only one aspect of the topic.
  • Putting too many complex elements. When making a 30-minute presentation, you might add different elements, such as storytelling and animation, to keep the audience engaged. In a much shorter form, everything needs to be straight to the point, so choose your words or the transition carefully.

What It Takes to Give a Great Presentation

  • Carmine Gallo

mock presentation

Five tips to set yourself apart.

Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).

I was sitting across the table from a Silicon Valley CEO who had pioneered a technology that touches many of our lives — the flash memory that stores data on smartphones, digital cameras, and computers. He was a frequent guest on CNBC and had been delivering business presentations for at least 20 years before we met. And yet, the CEO wanted to sharpen his public speaking skills.

How to practice your presentations

Captivating an audience is an art form. Weaving deliberate pauses, emphatic delivery, and a clear narrative together can wow an audience. But, without proper preparation and practice, any presentation can fall flat. Take the proper measures to prepare and rehearse for your next presentation.

mock presentation

Create an outline

Any succinct presentation should start with an outline. Creating an outline maps out a clear narrative from point A to point B for you and your audience to follow.

Tell your story with captivating presentations Banner

Tell your story with captivating presentations

Powerpoint empowers you to develop well-designed content across all your devices

As you begin outlining, consider your audience and topic. This will help to identify the appropriate structure and tone as you rehearse. For example, constructing a presentation on how to save money to children would be different than what you would present to adults. In addition to defining your audience, what do you want them to take away from the presentation? If your intention is to inform an audience, include visual aids like charts, images, and diagrams. If you’re persuading an audience to act, make sure to include and emphasize your call-to-action .

Finally, create the structure by sectioning an introduction, body, and conclusion. You can use a numbered list, bullet points, or a multi-level list with Microsoft Word to develop your outline.

Write key talking points on notecards

Using the outline, tone, and audience, brainstorm key talking points to include on notecards. Practicing with notecards can build confidence and familiarity before you present as you polish the flow of your presentation. After you feel more comfortable, put them to the side. It’s better to present without them so that your speech patterns sound more natural.

If you’re using Microsoft PowerPoint to present, you can include speaker notes to review while you present.

Practice in front of a mirror

See how your audience will perceive you by practicing in front of a mirror. Make sure your body language is confident, avoid folding your arms, and if appropriate, use hand gestures that complement your talking points. Looking in the mirror also can help you build confidence with eye contact, as you look at your reflection. Using this technique can also help you become less reliant on notecards.

Record rehearsal presentations

After you feel comfortable practicing in front of a mirror, take it up a notch by recording yourself. Start recording as you begin your presentation and stop when you finish. If there is time limit for your presentation, note the length of the recording. As you review, pay attention to any filler words, areas you stumble over, pacing, tone, and cadence. If your speech is too long, make any necessary amendments to your talking points or increase your pacing in lengthier sections. It’s better to trim down than speed up so that the audience can clearly understand the focal points of your presentation.

You can upload recordings of your presentation to OneDrive to save space on your phone or computer.

Rehearse with people

The best way to mimic the presentation is doing a mock presentation with a real audience. Gather your friends, family, and colleagues and do a full run-through of your presentation. Practicing in front of an audience will have more pressure than practicing on your own. If you have stage fright, make sure to breathe and smile, even if you are feeling anxious. Before starting your presentation, feel free to include any disclaimers or areas you want your audience to focus on for feedback. Don’t take any critique to heart. Feedback will only help you as you get ready for presentation day.

Visit the location where you’re presenting

Avoid environmental variables by visiting your location ahead of time. Conduct a mock presentation utilizing any presentation material, lighting, microphones, and clickers to make sure everything works. Technical errors can create unnecessary interruptions, affect the flow of your presentation, and be distracting for the audience. So, try practicing at the location beforehand and give yourself a final boost of confidence.

Presenting is a nuanced skill that takes plenty of practice and rehearsals to make your delivery impactful. Learn more ways to improve your presentation skills .

25 Great Presentation Examples Your Audience Will Love

25 Great Presentation Examples Your Audience Will Love

Written by: Chloe West

presentation examples - header wide

If you're starting a presentation from scratch, you know that being met with a blank, empty slide can feel a bit intimidating, especially if you're meeting a deadline, overwhelmed with ideas, or not very design-savvy.

This begs the question: How and where do you even start?

One of the easiest places to start is with an idea of the look and feel you want your presentation design to have, along with a complementary layout. Once you have that, all you need to do is fill out the design with your copy and images, and voila, you're done.

To help guide you in this choice, we've put together 25 awesome presentation examples, ranging from business presentations to product presentations and a wide range of use cases in between. Plus, we'll also share ready-to-use templates to move your presentation from blank to almost done!

If you’re short on time, use Visme AI Designer to help you save time and boost your creativity. With just a simple text prompt to our AI Designer Chatbot, choose a style, and voila, your unique design is ready in under two minutes!

Presentation Example #1: Colorful Slides

Draw your audience and keep them engaged with bright, colorful slides in your presentation. This portfolio presentation showcases a designer’s collaboration with Nike. And it’s a great example of how fun and playfulness can not only look good but also draw the reader's attention to key areas you’d like them to focus on.

As great as adding colors can be, there is a right and wrong way of creating colorful presentations tastefully. In fact, it’s suggested that presentations be designed with 2-3 color schemes that are consistent and complimentary from start to finish.

This is an example of a presentation with well-balanced colors. Tones of blue as the main color, with complementary colors of white and soft neon yellows, are all used in and around the illustrations present.

Presentation Example #2: Embedded Video

If you aren’t physically present to give your presentation, you can still put on a show by creating a video presentation.

Adding embedding or using videos in your presentation breaks the monotony of scrolling through a sequence of static slides.

It stops the reader in their tracks to share a demonstration, product details, or essential facts that might be easily summarized in a few lines or are better visualized.

But embedding a single video within your presentation isn’t the only option; you can get creative and use videos as background images instead of regular static images.

Check out this explainer video presentation example. It’s short yet effective and filled with vivid videos, text, and animation.

Visme allows you to easily upload your own videos or import them from YouTube, Vimeo, and other platforms

Or tap into our extensive library of royalty-free stock videos and assets so you’re sure to find the perfect videos for your presentation.

For more check this quick guide on How to Embed a YouTube Video in Powerpoint & More .

Presentation Example #3: Interactivity

Not all presentations or slideshows will be or need to be presented.

If your presentation is sent to a client or stakeholder to review on their own, or is used for a self-paced training session, interactive presentations can enhance the experience.

By adding  interactivity to your presentation, you give reader autonomy and ensure that they don’t get bored reading on their own but can find and maintain their pace until the end.

Visme allows you to easily incorporate interactivity with coding. You can add a clickable table of contents, hotspots,  add links to  objects and more.

presentation examples - Interactivity

Consider this informative presentation example: Her last slide includes an RSVP button for people to learn more about the service she teased within her presentation.

This is the perfect lead generation and call-to-action for increasing your customer or membership base.

When you design your presentation with Visme, you can link text and other elements to your website. You can even create and embed a lead generating form in your presentation.

Presentation Example #4: Metaphors

If you can appeal to your audience with a metaphor from pop culture or another well-known reference, you’re sure to keep their attention.

That’s why we love this presentation example that uses superhero comparisons to talk about storytelling.

presentation examples - metaphors

This storyline is catchy, and it gets the audience intrigued as to what comparison they’re going to make next. Plus, who doesn’t want to be compared to a superhero?

During your next presentation, see if there are any popular references that you can make easy comparisons to in your topic. But don’t try too hard to fit a comparison in, or your audience will be confused.

Presentation Example #5: Animation

Who doesn’t love a good animated presentation?

Animation is not only fun but memorable. Some of the best animated presentation software out there offers dozens of features to amp up your presentation design.

However, like all things, too much of a good thing can be bad.  Just because animation is great doesn’t mean you need to add it to all your slides. Sometimes, simply adding a slight animation makes for the perfect slide.

And that’s exactly where this presentation example comes in.

While it’s not much, having each expert’s quote pop up after the rest of the information is already on the slide gives the presentation a slightly more fun air than if the entire slide content was static.

Visme has a wide range of animation features that require no coding or design skills. You can add slide transitions, animate objects or images or animated characters to highlight sections of your page

Presentation Example #6: Device Mockups

If you're a UX designer or planning to launch a new product, website, or software that's best displayed on a phone or computer, include a mock-up and screenshot in your presentation.

After all, a standalone screen grab with no formatting is a recipe for boring content, whereas a mockup of a laptop gives the reader a realistic point of view and visual experience.

This good presentation example represents exactly how well a mockup can make your content and overall presentation look professional.

presentation examples - device mockups

When it comes to mock-ups, Visme has got you covered. Readily access professionally designed mockup presentation templates already inside or you can use the mockup generator to instantly design your own. It goes beyond device mockups and allows you to create branding, product, social media and print mockups.

Presentation Example #7: Visual Hierarchy

When we say visual hierarchy , we mean that the elements need to be organized in order of importance.

In this specific example we’re focused more on the presentation text rather than design.

Pay attention to how the header text and body content differ.

presentation examples - visual hierarchy

The headers on each of the above slides is in a large, all caps font while the body copy is much smaller and in sentence case. This creates a visual hierarchy that makes it obvious which font is the header, and therefore the most important part of the slide content.

Presentation Example #8: Icons

A common mistake most people make when designing their presentations is solely using words. By only using text in your presentation, you’re bound to lose your readers' or viewers' interest.

But maybe you don’t want to add all the bells and whistles that come with an elaborate design. That’s fine, but a simple alternative is to use icons.

Beautiful icons give your presentation a professional look and feel, help to illustrate your point and guide the viewers’ eyes to key points.

This is an example of a good presentation that uses icons to emphasize each of the slide points.

presentation examples - icons

Access thousands of high-quality icons, shapes and graphics!

  • Vector icons to spice up any Visme design or document
  • Free to use , and great for print or web.
  • Customize colors to fit your design needs.

Not only is this much more creative than boring bulleted slides on PowerPoint, it’s an incredibly easy thing to do on a presentation maker like Visme. Simply search for an icon relevant to your point and search through hundreds of options.

Presentation Example #9: Monochromatic Slides

A monochromatic color scheme consists of tints and shades of a single color and can be extremely visually appealing when done well.

This presentation example includes multiple bright colors in the overall presentation, but they’ve utilized one at a time to create monochromatic slides.

presentation examples - monochromatic slides

In other types of design, like an infographic or social media graphic, you’d stick to a single monochromatic color scheme.

But this example does a great job of utilizing monochromatic harmonies in a presentation while still keeping it engaging by focusing on more than one color the entire time.

Presentation Example #10: Use Images as a Background

The use of images as backgrounds within your presentation can elevate your presentation’s design.

With high-quality images, you can complement your storytelling and actively take your audience on a visual journey that keeps their eyes focused on important details that would have otherwise been missed by simply using text alone in your presentation.

This Nike pitch deck is an effective presentation example of how visuals can evoke emotion, keep the reader engaged and properly portray the message of your overall presentation.

presentation examples - use images as a background

Looking for the perfect image for your presentations can be frustrating. Instead of picking an image out of desperation, you can create one from your inspiration with Visme's AI Image Generator .

Enter a detailed prompt, choose from a range of styles, and in a matter of seconds, you will have a royalty-free AI-generated image ready to be added to your presentation.

And if you already have your stock of images you'd like to upload but they need a bit of editing, use the AI Touch Up Tools to resize, reshape, unblur, remove backgrounds and more, until you're completely satisfied with the results.

Presentation Example #11: Consistency

When putting together a presentation, you want it to be obvious that your slides are cohesive and meant to go together in the slideshow. This means you should be utilizing the same color scheme, fonts and overall theme throughout your presentation.

This presentation created with Visme is a great example of consistency throughout the slides.

presentation examples - consistency

Each of these slides follows the same design even though the content on each one differs.

Use the Brand Wizard to help maintain your presentation's visual and brand consistency. This AI-powered tool will help to create a brand kit you can easily access while you're designing.

Insert your URL in the Brand Wizard and watch it grab your assets (company logo, fonts, and colors) and add them to your brand kit. It'll also suggest templates within the Visme library that automatically match your brand.

Presentation Example #12: Fancy Fonts

If you’re a luxury or creative brand that wants to translate your style or showcase your work and add some personality to your text in your presentations, then you should incorporate fancy fonts.

When you’re using fancy fonts, they should be used sparingly, especially in a large font capacity, like a header. You don’t want to place too much text in a fancy font or it gets to be too hard to read, giving both you—as the presenter—and your audience a headache.

Here’s a perfect and practical example of how to incorporate fancy fonts into your presentation:

mock presentation

Using this fancy script font in their presentation gives their slides a more playful air and allows them to further connect with their audience.

Presentation Example #13: Flat Design

Another creative presentation idea you can use would be adding flat designs.

These are usually two-dimensional graphics with bright colors and a minimalist look and feel. Since they're so versatile, flat designs can be used across different industries.

Take a look at this LinkedIn presentation example. The visuals on each slide are characters illustrated in flat design. Utilizing this style can be a great way to create beautiful slides that your audience can’t get enough of.

presentation examples - flat design

Be sure that your illustrations are relevant to your slide content so they don’t seem out of place. Just because something looks pretty doesn’t necessarily mean it makes sense in your presentation.

Presentation Example #14: Slide Progress

Most people tend to forget about the table of contents when you’re presenting. Letting your audience know how far along your presentation they are can be a great way to keep them engaged and following along.

This can be especially useful when you’re doing a training session or a lengthy webinar presentation.

Look at this presentation example, which includes a slide progression countdown to let the audience know how many points are left to be covered.

presentation examples - slide progress

Presentation Example #15: Data Visualization

When you’re sharing complex or detailed data in your presentations, it’s always best to use data visualization .

By adding charts, graphs and other data widgets, you make your data more digestible for your audience and effortlessly highlight key points without losing their interest.

This presentation example does a great job of using data visualization to present stats and information in a fun and approachable way.

presentation examples - data visualization

Visme has over 40 customizable charts,  graphs, maps and data widgets for you to choose from. You can also import data manually from a spreadsheet, Google Sheets, or apps like Google Analytics into your charts.

Maybe you’d like to start using data visualization, but you’re not sure which one might be the best for your data. We have a detailed guide on 33 Data Visualization Types and how to choose the one that works best for you and your industry.

Presentation Example #16: Minimalistic Slides

You don’t have to stuff tons of information into each one of your presentation slides.

Sometimes less is more.

You can place only the most important words and visuals on a slide and let your voice do the rest. Or you can just add more slides for each of your points.

This presentation example uses minimalistic slides that only focus on a single point at a time.

presentation examples - minimalist slides

You don’t have to have a ton of design elements on a slide for it to be visually appealing. This presentation includes just the basics and it still looks well designed and teaches something to its audience.

Presentation Example #17: Graphics

Another great way to create a minimalistic and visually appealing presentation is by placing equal emphasis on text and graphics.

We love the way this next presentation example utilized graphics in each one of their slides.

This presentation covers 25 need-to-know marketing stats, and while the data isn’t placed into charts and graphs, they’ve still come up with a way to add visuals.

presentation examples - graphics

This is a great way to incorporate graphics into their slides.

They’ve put a large emphasis on the text, especially since that’s the only white on the slide with the rest monochromatic, but they’re still adding visuals to further emphasize the content.

Presentation Example #18: Lowercase Text

Not every heading has to be in title format and not every sentence has to be in sentence case.

In fact, this presentation provides a great example of how visual hierarchy can still be achieved while utilizing all lowercase letters.

presentation examples - lowercase text

Use larger fonts for headers and smaller fonts for your body, and you can also take advantage of this unique typography design in your presentation.

Just remember that visual hierarchy is still important. The lowercase text works in this presentation because they’ve made it so obvious which text needs to be read first.

Presentation Example #19: Transition

Your transition matters. Notice how I didn’t pluralize the word “transition.” This is because you should only be using a single kind of transition per presentation.

You don’t want to overwhelm your audience or make your presentation look overly busy. Take note of how seamless this presentation example’s slide transition is.

Customize this presentation template and make it your own!

  • Add your own text, images, colors and more
  • Add interactive buttons and animations
  • Customize anything to fit your design and content needs

Not only does the slide transition in the same direction each time, but all of the design elements also glide in the same direction creating a beautiful and visually appealing transition.

Presentation Example #20: Focus on Text

While everyone loves adding stylish graphics, photos or icons, only some presentations need to be built that way. Some presentations can mainly focus on the text while only having a few or no slides with graphics or images.

This presentation example uses only text on each slide. However, it uses two contrasting colors to highlight the speaker's main points and guide the viewer's eyes.  This makes it creative without having to add a ton of visuals.

presentation examples - focus on text

This presentation uses different colors and different sizes to emphasize the more important pieces of text, making it creative without having to add a ton of visuals.

Presentation Example #21: Focus on Graphics

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you can also have a presentation that puts a huge focus on visuals.

While this presentation still includes text to help tell the full story, no one in the audience is going to be looking at the text. Check out the graphics in this presentation example.

mock presentation

These illustrations are visually immersive and draw the audience in. Creating a focus on graphics in your presentation gives your viewers something fun to look at while you speak about the content.

Presentation Example #22: Photography

Another great way to include visuals in your presentation is using photography.

There are many different ways to include images in your presentation , but this Adidas presentation example does a great job of using them as background images.

Each slide has a photo in the background and a color overlay on top so the text can still be seen easily.

presentation examples - photography

Figure out how you could include photos in your next presentation.

You can hire a photographer to do a curated photo session for your brand, or you can check out the millions of stock photos available in Visme’s photo library.

Presentation Example #23: Section Headers

Each time you move onto another main point in your presentation, it’s a good idea to break it up with a new section header.

We love how this presentation example utilized section headers to make them jump out at the audience. There’s no doubt that we’re moving onto another main point in this slideshow.

presentation examples - section headers

Blow your text up like this next time you’re making a transition to the next section of your presentation. It’ll be sure to grab your audience’s attention.

Presentation Example #24: Pop of Color

Another design style that you might love is having a pop of color that really stands out from the rest of the design. It’s a great way to emphasize certain parts of your slides and create a focal point for your audience.

This sales budget presentation template works because it uses a black-and-white color scheme and a pop of bright color to attract the viewer's eyes to the most important parts of each slide.

mock presentation

Your eyes are immediately drawn to the words in blue, and it’s used strategically because of that. Try this out in your next presentation to highlight the most important words or parts of your slide.

Presentation Example #25: Strong Start

Want to keep your audience awake and engaged for your presentation? Start off with a killer first slide.

Take this presentation’s introduction slide for example. It's a great way of making people sit up a little straighter and causing ears to perk up.

presentation examples - strong start

Asking a powerful question or making a strong—maybe even controversial—opening statement is a great way to create a strong start to your presentation and really draw your audience in. This can be a great hook when presenting a sponsorship deck or a presentation proposal, because it helps to differentiates you from others.

Startling your audience can actually be a good way to pique their curiosity and keep them engaged.

If you’re looking for good topics for presentations, you’ve landed on the right page. In this article, you’ll find plenty of good presentation topics, tips on choosing the most suitable presentation topic for you, and essential design elements to make your presentation a success.

Many factors go into an excellent presentation. You need to have confident body language and engage your audience to hold their attention. You also need eye-catching visual aids like images, data visualizations, GIFs, and others (all of which you can find in Prezi ), not to mention a great opening to grab attention and a strong closing line to stay memorable. However, the most essential aspect of your presentation is the topic. It’s the core of your presentation, so it has to be strong, insightful, attention-grabbing, and appealing to yourself and your audience in order to evolve into a successful presentation everyone will love.

How to choose a good presentation topic

There are millions of topics you could create a presentation on, but what defines a good presentation topic? If you’re struggling to either come up with a good topic for a presentation or you can’t decide between multiple ones, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before choosing a topic.

What’s the goal of your presentation?

When you’re choosing a presentation topic, consider the meaning behind it. Ask yourself what the purpose of talking about this topic is, and what you want to say about it. Whatever topic you choose to present, the conclusion needs to provide a takeaway or lesson you want to communicate to your audience. A meaningful goal will make your presentation more memorable.

Are you interested in the topic?

If you’re not interested in the presentation topic, others won’t be curious either. Interest, enthusiasm, and passion enrich your presentation and are noticeable when presenting. Interest shines through and inspires others to find the topic as fascinating as you do. Think about the last time you saw someone sharing something they were passionate about – their excitement drew people in to pay closer attention to what they were saying.

When choosing a topic, you need to find it or a particular angle of it interesting for yourself. For example, perhaps you’re not a pop music enthusiast, but you’re passionate about studying cultural phenomena. In this case, you can talk about pop music’s influence on early 2000s youth culture.

Will your audience find this topic relatable?

While you have to find the topic you’re presenting interesting, you also have to think about your audience. When choosing a subject, consider your audience’s background in terms of demographics, interests, culture, and knowledge level about the topic. Think about what others will find fascinating and relevant, so they’re not bored or confused during your presentation.

Do you have prior experience or knowledge about this topic?

Personal experiences are always great to share in a presentation, providing your unique perspective for anyone listening. While you can easily prepare your presentation based on a quick Google search, it won’t make the same lasting impact on your audience. Choose a presentation topic you have some prior knowledge about, or have an interesting opinion you can share with others. It’ll make your presentation more engaging and memorable.

How to create a good presentation

If you know what you want to present on, it’s time to create an impactful presentation that grabs everyone’s attention. Presentation design plays a crucial role in how your presentation is received and remembered. To stand out and leave a memorable impact on your audience, create a Prezi presentation. Instead of a linear, slide-based presentation, offer an engaging and dynamic storytelling experience to your audience. Breathe life into your presentation with motion, zoom, and spatial relationships. When creating your presentation, consider the following three essential elements:

Visuals play a significant part in presentation design. They evoke emotions, make a memorable impact, and give more context to the story. Not to mention, 65% of people are visual learners , so visual aids are helpful when explaining a complex topic.

In your presentation, include different types of visuals, such as images, videos, GIFs, and stickers, all of which you can find in Prezi’s content library. When selecting your visuals, consider what’s relevant and brings additional value to the story. Only add what’s meaningful and necessary. A video or image at the right place and time will enrich the viewing experience and make your presentation more memorable.

The layout of your presentation is the structure of your story. It’ll help you introduce the topic, intrigue your audience, and unfold the layers of your topic one by one until you disclose your main arguments and summarize the presentation. A good presentation layout has a hierarchical, chronological, or logical flow that leads the viewer from start to finish.

If you’re creating a Prezi presentation, you can create a dynamic storytelling experience by experimenting with your layout. Instead of going from slide to slide, you can zoom in and out of topics and experiment with different shapes, animations, and effects that draw the viewer into your story world. Here’s an example of a Prezi presentation with a great storytelling layout:

Author: Lydia Antonatos

Data visualizations can elevate your presentation from being a good one to a great one. By providing data behind your arguments, you’ll appear more trustworthy and confident in your audience’s eyes.

Add charts, graphs, interactive maps, and more to your presentations with Prezi Design. You can choose from a wide selection of charts and maps to illustrate your data. With interactive elements, you’ll be able to engage your audience and make a memorable impact.

Engaging visuals, a well-structured layout, and relevant data visualizations will provide a great starting base to create a memorable presentation. Discover other tips and tricks that make your presentation effective and capture people’s attention.

Prezi AI for presentation success

If you already have a clear presentation style in mind or plenty of time for creation, fantastic! But what if you only have a day or less or you don’t know where to start? Enter Prezi AI . How to do a Pitch Deck Presentation (plus free templates!)

Carla Albinagorta

If you are in any kind of business or enterprise, you’re probably looking for every chance to make your company grow. Sadly, such opportunities don’t usually just fall from the sky. You need to convince your potential investors, clients, or partners to get the resources you need. And how do you convince them? With a Pitch Deck Presentation .

Here you can find a step by step guide on what your Pitch Deck should include. But since it is not always easy to do everything from scratch, here you can also find amazing templates, completely free. Their amazing visuals and diagrams will assure that you don’t only get your point across, but that you also stay on the mind of your audience after the presentation has already ended.

ultimate pitch deck presentation

What is a Pitch Deck Presentation?

To get the funding you need for your company, you should look for investors. Now, there are thousands and thousands of businesses looking for wealthy investors. The way to stand out among all those other competitors is making them aware of your business potential. And how do you do this? Through a Pitch Deck.

A Pitch Deck is a brief presentation that you give to potential investors to convince them to bet their money in your company. It can be used face-to-face, or online. You can make a Pitch Deck presentation for a customer, or a client, or even a partner. The objective is to showcase your business plan, your product, and your over-all growth projections. In other words, you have to sell to your audience not only what your product is, but also what it could be .

investors pitch deck

You should plan carefully your Pitch Deck presentation. For a truly great presentation you’ll need a good understanding of both your own business and your potential investors. Consider the things that could be interesting for them. Maybe it is something that shows your business’ stability. Maybe it is the business model you’re going to implement. Or the expected ROI. But also consider the things about your company that are astounding and that differentiate it from the competition.

What to include in a Pitch Deck Presentation

There is some debate on how long a Pitch Deck presentation should be. Some say 10 slides should be more than enough to give a brief look over your business. Some say it should be 12. Others say 20 slides should be the absolute limit. So, which one is it?

One thing is for certain, it should not feel long. After all, you can have 40 slides and go through them faster than a 7-slide presentation filled with text. But, most likely, if anyone sees a 40-slide presentation their reaction will be of complete dread.  Boring your public even before you start is the worst idea, so try to keep it short and sweet as much as possible.

startup pitch deck template

I suggest a 12-sections for an ideal Pitch Deck. This will allow you to give a complete overview of your business without being overwhelming. Ideally, each of these sections should have each one slide. However, this is not a rule written in stone. Maybe it is worth to expand a little more on a specific topic. The golden rule is to keep one idea per slide , even if that means making more slides. This way it will clearer for your audience, and it will be easier to keep their attention right where you want it.

On the opposite side, you don’t need to make a slide for every single one of these sections. Maybe some of these won’t apply to your business. Consider these sections more as a guideline of what you can use to show your company’s potential. Take, for example, the famous early Facebook Pitch Deck .

Early Facebook Pitch Deck from Ilya Friedman, CFA

As you can see, this Pitch Deck has no “Problem” or “Solution” sections. This is because Facebook wasn’t tackling any existing problems, but creating a new necessity. Focusing on a non-existing problem would have been useless to justify its importance. Instead, what they do is focus on what it does have: market validation. They expend several slides going through media data that shows how incredibly popular they are and their users’ demographics.

1- Introduction

Your introduction should be able to catch your audience’s attention from the get-go. Look at the Facebook Pitch Deck. Their introduction is just a quote. But it is a quote that presents them as a revolutionary idea that is changing the way people interact. This is what you should look for an introduction. A short way to present your business in a forward way, while also leaving your public wanting more. Storytelling can be a great tool for this.

Not every Pitch Deck includes a Team slide, but it can be extremely useful. Presenting the people making the decisions and showcasing their previous achievements can make investors more at ease. If you have members in your team that add a plus on how execution will be managed in your business, it can certainly be a good idea to dedicate a slide to it. Of course, it is up to you to decide if it’s useful or not. You can even change where exactly the slide should go, depending on which topic you feel it connects better.

team powerpoint templates

This is a vital slide in (almost) any Pitch Deck Presentation. As Forbes mentions, it is more likely for an investor to bet on you if he can relate to the problem you are putting on the table. Or, in any case, if you can explain it well enough so he can understand its importance. The more inescapable a problem is, the more likely a solution for it will have a big demand.

4- Solution

This slide needs to be as concise and clear as possible. It should answer directly to the problem. Try to avoid offering different solutions. Even if you have a multi-faceted project, simplifying the solution you’re offering will make you look more focused and more trustworthy. Afterward, in the product description or the business model, you can elaborate on what else makes your product or services so special, but here, try to keep it as straightforward as possible.

There is also the possibility to join the problem and the solution in just one slide. You can see that in some of the templates below. This can be useful to show the direct relationship between the two of them. You can always do that, just remember that the priority is to be as clear as possible.

5- Product/Service

Here you can show your product in action. Show how it implements your solution and its effectiveness. The Facebook Pitch Deck is a great example of that. Even if there is no solution in this presentation, it makes an awesome job of portraying its product uniqueness. From its users’ profile to the networking value it offers, it gives the public a short but complete overview of what the product is about.

6- Traction and Market

This slide should also be straight to the point and data-based. There is nothing speaks better of growth and traction than a data-based graph. Slides such as this one are great to show everything you need with very few words. This is the moment to show your business is already successful, and that, with enough resources, it can become even bigger.

growth powerpoint templates

You should have done a good in-depth research on your target market before your Pitch Deck presentation.  Your market can determine your potential exit with investors. The market’s size, its willingness to expend their money can be a key factor when deciding where to invest. Showing statistics and customer feedback can be very useful to show how successful your product already is. Just check out the Facebook Pitch Deck. Many of its slides are focused on showing their popularity and reach. This is, after all, what attracts investors.

7- Business Model

This slide is not a requirement, but if done well, it can be a huge plus in your presentation. Show your audience how you are planning to make money. Proving that you have a concrete idea of how your whole business will operate will give you a great image in front of investors and clients. For this, slides with graphs such as funnels can be a great option to display how you plan your business to work.

business funnel template

8- Financial Forecasting

This section is where you show your projections to where you see your business going in the future. For example, you can present the expected growth in 3 or 5 years. Sometimes this section can be directly related to the investment section and how would you invest the money to make your company grow.  As always, this depends on your own presentation and the order you want to give it. Just remember that having a realistic, transparent approach to what to expect in the future can really make a difference for your audience.

9- Competition

Even if your idea is great, it is highly unlikely that you are the very first person who came up with something like that. In most cases, you’ll have to deal with some competitors offering similar products or services to the same target market. It is important that you have a deep understanding of your business and its differential value. Only then you can really show investors what makes your business unique and why they should be on you instead of any of the others. Yo need to know where you are standing on compared to your competitors and diagrams are a great way to showcase that. SWOT analyses are also a great way to convey both yours and your competition’s strengths and weaknesses.

competitor analysis template

10- Desired Investment

Even if everything else is great, your Pitch Deck won’t be really successful until you actually get the fundraising you need. And to get it, you have to eventually ask for it. Presenting a plan of what you expect to do with it and how it will be used to grow the business will show your audience how grounded the management is.

11- Closure/Contact

Finally, you should invest some time in making a good closure for your presentation. In Facebook’s Pitch Deck, is another great quote, that makes the presentation end at a high note. You should certainly aim for that. But even if it’s not possible, you should at least have a slide dedicated to contact information. After hearing your presentation, your audience should be completely clear on how to invest and what would be the next steps. At the bare minimum, they should know how to contact you again. After all, the whole purpose of the Pitch Deck is to build relationships with potential investors.

One thing that can distinguish yourself from other competitors can be the way you present yourself to your potential customers. That is why a slide for your Marketing Strategy can be so important.

creative pitch deck template

Making Your Own Pitch Deck

So, which one should you use? Sadly, there is no easy answer to this question. How long your presentation should be, and what slides you should use for your Pitch Deck depends entirely on you. It depends on what you believe are your strengths, what do you think your differential value is, and so on. It depends on what numbers you have that could be eye-catching for potential investors.

Good thing is, there is no wrong answer either. Think carefully about what you want your audience to get out of it, and what specific information will convey this idea the best. Do you think one of the best things your business has is its stability? Then showing a graph of steady growth might be a good idea. Or maybe the best aspect is that there is a huge market to tap on. Then making an extra effort in the market slide is a must. Really, really knowing your business is the only way to make a truly great Pitch Deck presentation.

And, as always, remember that the slides are just a tool. There is a limit on how much a good presentation design can do when the speaker is not at their best. The delivery is a vital part of every presentation, and even more in this kind of presentations. A Pitch Deck should be highly persuasive. Whether it is to an investor, a client, or a partner, the challenge is to convince them of the potential of your business. To make them see not only what the company is but what it can become (with their help). This is why the speaker should be someone who believes in the product and is passionate about it.

Building a Mock Audience

Most speakers approach a presentation with a plan. To prepare, they build messages, create compelling visuals, revise. They practice fine-tuning both content and delivery, becoming more comfortable with the material and their presentation of it.

But for many high-stakes presentations—a major project proposal, an FDA Advisory Committee Meeting, a policy hearing—preparation also includes holding one or more rehearsals before a mock audience in order to increase speaker control and comfort. The comment and critique resulting from such rehearsal directs revision, helping speakers to address issues and emphasize strengths more effectively.

Selecting a group of listeners to serve as a mock audience requires you to be mindful of the analysis you have made of your intended audience. That analysis not only continues to shape your messages, support, and delivery but may also help you build a mock audience that mirrors the actual one if such a replication will be helpful.

It won't always be.

But determining what you need from a mock audience is.

PURPOSE GUIDES SELECTION

"Understanding the outcome-specific purpose of a mock panel is essential," says AdComm specialist Michael Vivion. "A speaker or a team of presenters must define what is needed from the mock audience. Articulating that purpose guides the selection and recruitment of mock panelists; it helps ensure that the mock audience can indeed provide feedback that strengthens the presentation."

Michael notes that purpose may be affected by the number of mock presentations scheduled. "For a series of mocks, it's best to concentrate on a series of purposes, each time choosing participants that can address particular concerns." Those purposes could include evaluating the overall structure of the presentation, the quality of support provided, or the strength of major messages and the approach taken in each. The purpose could be to seek advice on how to handle issues or to obtain a hard critique of speaker performance; it could be to simulate the dynamics of Q&A sessions.

A purpose may also be less straightforward. At times, the purpose of a mock may be to reinvigorate a team or to motivate presenters to examine their claims more closely. At others, it may be to persuade mock participants to champion the product or action proposed, to form and lead positive opinions of it.

FROM PURPOSE TO PANEL

It's common for a mock—either a single, stand-alone or one of a series—to serve several purposes. Determine what they are, prioritize them, and then list potential advisors whose expertise qualifies them to address different aspects of the presentation.

"Then," Michael advises, "search within that group for mock panelists whose credibility is recognized by the speakers and whose style or approach supports the purpose." The speaker or team will best utilize feedback from a mock audience whose abilities are highly regarded, an audience whose capabilities and understanding are equal to or better than their own.

But response style also matters. Some potential panelists will be engaging, friendly, even charming. Others, though, may border on rudeness or hostility. "Some presenters may need brutal questions or a harsh manner in order to improve their presentations," Michael says. "Others can effect positive changes when mock panelists comment gently or simply question."

Use the purposes assigned to a mock presentation to select participant expertise and styles that will best benefit speakers. When you make a mock purpose-driven, you're likely to get the improvements that you need.

Mock Presentation

Description.

Like the mock design review and the mock demo, the mock presentation is an informal, mandatory event designed to better prepare you for your Final Presentation . These sessions are run by staff and students from the Department of Communication, who are experts in teaching professional communication skills. In this session, you are only given five minutes to present a few slides on one major component of your project. Your presentation should include at least one block diagram, one graph/plot, and some math. You will also have the opportunity to see several other mock presentations. You will be given feedback based on the organization of the presentation, delivery and your ability to present as a team (so all members must speak).

Requirements and Grading

The mock presentation is meant to be a small subset of your final presentation. It is recommended that you choose some aspect of your project (like a major block from your block diagram) and present the design, requirements, and verification for that block. In order to get relevant feedback on your presentation skills, your mock presentation should also have an introduction (where the project is introduced) and a conclusion that wraps everything up. You will receive feedback on both your delivery, the format of your slides, and the organization of your presentation.

  • Title slide: Names, group #, title.
  • Introduction slide: What is the project?
  • Objective slide: What problem does this solve?
  • Design Slides: A few slides on design, requirements and verification (should include block diagram, math, graphs, figures, tables).
  • Conclusion: Wrap things up, future work.

Mock presentation is graded credit/no credit based on attendance and apparent effort; showing up completely unprepared will earn no credit. An example mock presentation can be found here: example mock presentation

Submission and Deadlines

Sign-up is handled through PACE. Time slots are 1 hour long, and multiple groups will share a time slot. This will give you an opportunity to give and receive feedback from your peers. You will be required to stay until all groups have presented and received feedback.

Featured Project

LED technology is more advanced and much more efficient than traditional incandescent light bulbs and as such our team decided we wanted to build a device related to LEDs. An LED cube is inherently aesthetically pleasing and ours will be capable of displaying 3D animations and lighting patterns with much increased complexity compared to any 2D display of comparable resolution. Environmental interaction will also be able to control the various lighting effects on the cube. Although our plan is for a visually pleasing cube, our implementation can easily be adapted for more practical applications such as displaying 3D models.

  • Discover the Benefits of Mock Trials

U.S. Legal Support

Case preparation can take months of research, depositions, and strategic planning—all for that one high-pressure moment in court. Even learning how to write a good opening statement can take a considerable amount of time and practice. For lawyers to be adequately prepared, they can first try their case in a mock trial. This offers a test environment to identify opportunities, adjust strategies, and improve case presentation before a real trial.

Here are seven benefits of mock trials for trial attorneys.

1. Obtain Unbiased Viewpoints

Mock jurors are individuals who have no stake in or involvement with a case. They’re engaged for a specific number of hours with preassigned roles and presented with a shortened (usually half-day) version of the arguments and evidence.

Mock jurors do not have the overload of background facts and nuances that your team has been absorbing for months, which means they can provide an unbiased perspective on how your case presentation, themes, exhibits, and more come across.

2. Clarify Your Evidence

Can the average juror follow your expert witness testimony, evidentiary exhibits, and trial presentations? Do they come to the intended conclusions that support your trial theme and arguments?

Mock trials provide one avenue to test the impact and clarity of evidence—not just in a standalone examination as with a focus group, but within the context of a trial experience. They help trial teams test:

  • Whether technical information is understandably communicated
  • If jurors have the time and focus needed to absorb interwoven graphics, arguments, etc.
  • Whether evidence confuses or supports your themes

Trial-Support-Services

3. Evaluate Witness Credibility

How believable are your witnesses? A mock trial setting is ideal for testing your witnesses’ credibility and demeanor. You can arrange for them to be present at a mock trial or use video clips of their recorded testimony. From this point, you can decide:

  • What type of trial preparation each witness needs
  • Whether to use uncertain witnesses
  • How to adjust your questions for a nervous witness

4. Test Your Arguments

Rehearsing arguments on your own and even running through presentations with your trial team is important preparation, but a mock trial is a dress rehearsal opportunity for your trial theme and arguments. It can uncover:

  • What works and what doesn’t
  • If your story resonates with the jury
  • When language choices or hyperbole are contrary to your goals
  • How to position decision-making toward the early phase of the trial

5. Obtain New Evidence

An outside opinion is the ideal source to point out assumptions, hidden expectations, and missing links. Mock trials include post-trial juror interviews that help trial teams understand questions that weren’t answered and gaps in narrative or logic chains.

The mock trial team can identify where they need to fill in evidentiary holes with additional:

  • Photographs, videos, or graphics
  • Witness testimony
  • Scientific results
  • Clarifying statements or questions

6. Refine Negotiation Strategy

Since more than 90% of civil lawsuits and criminal cases end in pretrial settlements or plea bargains, is investing in a mock trial worth it? 1,2 In short: yes.

A mock trial experience isn’t just a way to prepare for the first day of court—it can provide critical information about how jurors may:

  • Distribute blame among multiple defendants
  • Allocate compensatory and punitive damages
  • Respond emotionally vs. to the letter of the law

This information can help the trial attorney decide what settlement amounts or plea bargains are acceptable and how to schedule, position, and argue their case.

7. Use the Power of Early Deadlines

A mock trial is an ideal way to enforce deadlines that are early enough to make adjustments to:

  • Pretrial motions
  • Trial strategy, arguments, and evidence
  • Pretrial negotiation and mediation tactics
  • Presentation videos, graphics, and slides

Mock Calls: The Keys to Crushing Your Sales Targets

Mock Calls: The Keys to Crushing Your Sales Targets

What Is a Mock Call?

The mock call process overview, tips for effective mock calls, examples of mock call scenarios, leveraging technology in mock calls.

Phone call anxiety is a psychological phenomenon , and sales reps are not immune to it. That’s why mock calls should be an integral part of any successful sales enablement strategy.

This article will offer a comprehensive overview of what mock calls are and offer tips for sales managers and sales reps on how to make the most of their mock calls. Stay tuned for some mock call scenarios to use in your practice sessions.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

A mock call is a simulated sales call designed to prepare sales teams for real-world customer interactions. This training tool replicates actual scenarios that sales professionals might encounter, allowing them to practice and refine their skills in a controlled environment.

Through mock calls, sales teams can hone their communication skills, perfect objection-handling techniques, and build confidence before engaging with actual customers.

Pro Tip: Overcoming hesitation is key to successful outreach, and there are four ways salespeople can beat call reluctance .

1. Pre-Call Preparation

Identifying the target audience.

Understanding the target audience and building an ideal customer profile (ICP) are important steps to ensure the success of any sales interaction.

mock call: ICP

Nailing down the target audience’s pain points helps tailor the scenarios to reflect real-life challenges.

mock call: types of pain points

By aligning the mock call with the audience’s specific characteristics, sales teams can better prepare for the types of questions and objections they might face.

Creating Scripts

A well-crafted script is the foundation of a successful mock call. The script should include potential customer queries and objections.

Experienced managers emphasize the importance of creating authentic scenarios. As one put it, “The more realistic we made the mock calls, the better prepared my team was for actual customer interactions. We even started incorporating real objections we’d encountered recently.”

Familiarization with Scenarios

Before conducting a mock call, participants must familiarize themselves with the scenarios they will be practicing. This preparation ensures that the simulation is realistic and effective, allowing salespeople to fully immerse themselves in the exercise. Familiarity with the scenarios also helps participants anticipate potential challenges and develop strategies to overcome them.

2. Conducting the Mock Call

Tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) during the mock call is essential for measuring success. Metrics such as call duration, customer engagement, and the ability to handle objections provide valuable insights into the salesperson’s performance.

Pro Tip: Sales enablement platforms like Yesware can make scheduling calls with prospects a breeze. Yesware’s Meeting Scheduler empowers sales reps to schedule more meetings with live meeting links that sync to both their calendar and their recipient’s calendar.

mock call: Yesware Meeting Scheduler

3. Post-Call Evaluation

After the mock call, sales managers should conduct a thorough performance analysis. This involves reviewing the salesperson’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as their ability to adhere to the script and handle objections.

Performance analysis provides a clear picture of the areas where the salesperson excels and those that require further development.

This performance analysis is an integral part of effective sales pipeline management because it empowers the salesperson to excel in moving prospects through the sales pipeline.

Constructive feedback is a key component of the post-call evaluation. Providing actionable suggestions for improvement helps sales professionals enhance their lead capture and lead management skills.

Managers stress the importance of providing specific, actionable feedback. One noted : “I always start by asking the rep to self-evaluate, then offer my observations. This approach helps them develop self-awareness and take ownership of their improvement.”

Pro Tip: Grab the ebook below to discover effective strategies to maximize the benefits of 1:1 meetings between sales managers and sales reps.

How Sales Managers Can Maximize 1:1 Meetings (Backed by Data)

Mock calls are an indispensable tool in the sales training arsenal, offering numerous benefits such as improved sales engagement , better objection handling, and increased confidence.

As a sales manager, how do you make sure that your sales reps get the most out of their mock calls?

Set Clear Objectives

The foundation of any successful mock call session is setting clear objectives. These objectives should be tailored to the specific skills you want your mentees to develop, whether it’s improving communication, mastering objection handling, or refining upselling tactics.

mock call: upselling

With clear goals in mind, it’s easier to measure progress and identify areas for improvement.

For example, if the objective is to enhance cold calling tips , the session should focus on techniques for capturing the prospect’s interest within the first few seconds of the call.

mock call: elements of successful cold calls

If the goal is to practice objection handling , the mock call should simulate situations where the participant must overcome specific challenges presented by the “customer.”

mock call: common types of sales objections

Record Mock Calls

Recording mock calls helps provide constructive feedback. Also, sales reps can hear themselves in action, which often reveals nuances in their tone, pacing, and phrasing that they might not notice in the moment.

Ensure Regular Practice

Consistency is key when it comes to mastering sales skills. Regular practice through mock call sessions is essential for continuous improvement.

A sales leader advised : “We found that shorter, more frequent sessions were more effective than long, infrequent ones. Fifteen minutes of focused practice a few times a week yielded great results.”

By integrating mock calls into your routine, you create a culture of continuous learning and development, ensuring that your team remains sharp and confident in their sales interactions.

Make review sessions a recurring part of your training program, and you’ll likely see noticeable improvements in your team’s performance over time.

This scenario simulates an introductory sales call with a potential customer who had no prior contact with the company. In this scenario, sales reps practice:

  • Creating a positive first impression
  • Concisely conveying the value proposition
  • Practicing sales promotion
  • Generating interest for further engagement and possibly setting up a discovery call

mock call: what is a discovery call

Here is a sample sales call script :

Sales Rep: Good morning, this is Alex from InnovateX Solutions. Am I speaking with Sarah Thompson? Prospect (Sarah): Yes, this is Sarah. What’s this regarding? Sales Rep: Hi Sarah, I hope I’m not catching you at a bad time. I’m reaching out to small business owners in the area about a new software solution that’s helping companies like yours streamline their operations and boost productivity. Do you have a quick moment to chat? Prospect: I’m actually quite busy right now. What exactly are you selling? Sales Rep: I completely understand, Sarah. I’ll be brief. We’ve developed a cloud-based platform that integrates project management, customer relationship management, and financial tracking all in one place. Many of our clients report saving 5-10 hours per week on administrative tasks. Does that sound like something that might be valuable for your business? Prospect: Well, we could certainly use some help with efficiency, but I’m not really looking to change our systems right now. Sales Rep: I appreciate your honesty, Sarah. Many of our current clients initially felt the same way. But after seeing how our solution specifically addresses common pain points for small businesses, they were eager to give it a try. If you don’t mind me asking, what’s your biggest challenge when it comes to managing your business operations? Prospect: Hmm, I’d say keeping track of all our ongoing projects and making sure nothing falls through the cracks. Sales Rep: That’s a common issue we hear, Sarah. Our platform has a unique feature that gives you a bird’s-eye view of all your projects, deadlines, and team member assignments in one dashboard. Users tell us it’s like having a personal assistant keep everything organized. Would you be interested in seeing a quick demo of how this could work for your business? Prospect: Well, it does sound interesting, but, as I said, I’m quite busy at the moment. Sales Rep: I completely understand, Sarah. I know your time is valuable. I’d be happy to schedule a brief 15-minute demo at a time that’s more convenient for you. We could focus specifically on the project management features you mentioned. Would sometime next week work better for you? Prospect: I suppose that could work. What about next Tuesday afternoon? Sales Rep: Tuesday afternoon sounds great, Sarah. I have an opening at 2 PM. Would that work for you? Prospect: Yes, 2 PM on Tuesday is fine. Sales Rep: Excellent! I’ll send you a calendar invite with the details and a link to our online demo room. Before I let you go, is there anyone else from your team who should be included in this demo? Prospect:  You might want to include our operations manager, Tom. I’ll forward him the invite. Sales Rep: Perfect, thank you, Sarah. I’m looking forward to showing you how InnovateX can help streamline your operations. Have a great rest of your day, and I’ll see you on Tuesday! Prospect:  Thanks, goodbye.

This script demonstrates several key cold-calling techniques, including:

  • Quickly establishing the purpose of the call
  • Respecting the prospect’s time and offering to be brief
  • Providing a clear value proposition early in the call
  • Asking questions to understand the prospect’s needs
  • Addressing objections by relating to common client experiences
  • Offering a specific solution to the prospect’s stated challenge
  • Proposing a low-commitment next step (a short demo)
  • Confirming details and expanding the opportunity (including additional team members)

The sample script above is just one of the possible cold-calling scripts that help sales professionals practice the first step of engaging a prospect, building rapport , and generating interest.

mock call: how to build rapport in sales

Pro Tip: To improve your team’s outreach efforts, consider sharing these cold calling tips with your sales reps along with these effective sales voicemail scripts and closing the call statements.

Objection Handling

The prospect raises common objections such as “I’m not interested,” “We don’t have the budget,” or “We already have a supplier.”

mock call: common sales objections

In one imaginary scenario, a prospect may demand a price reduction. Sales reps will practice:

  • Emphasizing the product’s value proposition
  • Highlighting unique benefits that justify the price
  • Negotiating while maintaining profitability

A sample script may run along the following lines:

Sales Rep: Good morning, this is Sarah from TechPro Solutions. How are you doing today, Mr. Johnson? Prospect (Mr. Johnson): I’m fine, Sarah. Look, I’ve been reviewing your proposal, and while I like what I see, I have to say the price is higher than what we were expecting. Sales Rep: I appreciate your feedback, Mr. Johnson. I understand that price is an important factor in your decision. Could you tell me more about your concerns regarding the pricing? Prospect: Well, we’ve received quotes from other vendors that are about 15% lower than yours. We’re really interested in your solution, but we need you to match that price, or we’ll have to go with another option. Sales Rep: I see. Thank you for being upfront about this, Mr. Johnson. I’d like to address your concerns and explain why our solution offers the best value, even at its current price point. Would that be okay? Prospect: Go ahead, but I’m not sure you can convince me. Sales Rep: I understand. First, let me ask: in addition to price, what other factors are most important to you in choosing a solution? Prospect: Well, reliability is crucial. We can’t afford downtime. And we need good customer support. Sales Rep: Excellent, thank you for sharing that. Those are areas where TechPro Solutions really shines. Our uptime guarantee is 99.99%, which is industry-leading. Plus, we offer 24/7 customer support with a guaranteed response time of under 30 minutes. These features alone can save you thousands in potential lost productivity. Prospect: That does sound good, but it’s still hard to justify the higher price to my team. Sales Rep: I completely understand, Mr. Johnson. Let’s look at it this way: while our initial price may be 15% higher, our solution typically reduces IT-related downtime by 30% compared to our competitors. For a business of your size, that could translate to savings of over $50,000 per year. So in the long run, our solution actually costs less and provides more value. Prospect: Hmm, I hadn’t considered it from that angle. Sales Rep: Additionally, we offer a satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not completely satisfied with our service within the first 90 days, we’ll refund your money. This really demonstrates our confidence in our product and removes any risk for you. Prospect: That’s a strong guarantee. It does make your offer more appealing. Sales Rep: I’m glad to hear that, Mr. Johnson. Given the superior reliability, customer support, and potential for significant cost savings over time, do you agree that our solution offers the best overall value for your company? Prospect: You’ve made some compelling points, Sarah. I’m not ready to commit right now, but I’d like to discuss this further with my team. Sales Rep: That’s completely understandable, Mr. Johnson. I appreciate you taking the time to hear about the value we offer. Would it be helpful if I sent over a detailed breakdown of the cost savings and ROI you can expect with our solution? This might help in your discussions with your team. Prospect: Yes, that would be very helpful. Thank you, Sarah. Sales Rep: Excellent. I’ll get that over to you today. When would be a good time to follow up and discuss any questions you or your team might have? Prospect: How about next Tuesday at 2 PM? Sales Rep: Tuesday at 2 PM works perfectly. I’ll send you a calendar invite along with the additional information. Thank you for your time today, Mr. Johnson. I look forward to our next conversation. Prospect: Thanks, Sarah. Talk to you next week.

This script demonstrates several key techniques for handling price objections:

  • Listening to the customer’s concerns
  • Asking questions to understand their priorities
  • Emphasizing unique value propositions
  • Providing context for the pricing in terms of long-term value and ROI
  • Offering reassurances, like guarantees, to reduce perceived risk
  • Suggesting next steps to move the sales process forward

Engaging with Executives

This scenario helps sales reps develop the skills needed to communicate effectively with high-level decision-makers , focusing on strategic benefits rather than just product features.

Here’s a sample script for a mock call where a sales rep speaks with a C-level executive:

Sales Rep: Good morning, Mr. Johnson. This is Sarah Williams from InnovateX Solutions. Thank you for taking my call. I understand you’re extremely busy, so I’ll be brief. Is this still a good time to speak? Executive: Yes, go ahead, Sarah. But I only have about 10 minutes. Sales Rep: I appreciate that, Mr. Johnson. I’m reaching out because our research indicates that TechCorp is looking to optimize its supply chain operations. Is that correct? Executive: That’s right. We’re always looking for ways to improve efficiency. Sales Rep: Excellent. At InnovateX, we’ve developed an AI-driven supply chain management platform that has helped Fortune 500 companies reduce operational costs by an average of 22% while improving delivery times by 35%. Given TechCorp’s position in the market, I believe we could achieve similar or even better results for you. Executive: Interesting. But we’ve invested heavily in our current systems. What makes your solution different? Sales Rep: A great question, Mr. Johnson. Unlike traditional systems, our platform uses predictive analytics and machine learning to optimize every aspect of the supply chain in real time. This means it can adapt to market changes, demand fluctuations, and even geopolitical events that might impact your operations. Executive: That sounds promising, but implementation is always a concern. How disruptive would this be? Sales Rep: We’ve designed our system with minimal disruption in mind. On average, our clients are fully operational within 6-8 weeks, with no downtime to existing operations. We also provide comprehensive training and 24/7 support to ensure a smooth transition. Executive: And what about ROI? In this economic climate, any major investment needs to show clear returns. Sales Rep: Absolutely, Mr. Johnson. Based on companies similar to TechCorp, we project an ROI within the first 9-12 months. We’re so confident in these projections that we offer a performance guarantee: if you don’t see at least a 15% reduction in operational costs within the first year, we’ll provide our services free for an additional six months. Executive: That’s a bold guarantee. You’ve certainly piqued my interest, Sarah. Sales Rep: I’m glad to hear that, Mr. Johnson. Given what we’ve discussed, would you be open to a more in-depth presentation of our solution? I’d like to bring in our Chief Technology Officer to demonstrate how we can tailor our platform specifically to TechCorp’s needs. Executive: Yes, I think that would be worthwhile. Have your office coordinate with my assistant to set something up for next week. Sales Rep: Excellent, Mr. Johnson. I’ll make sure that happens today. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to our next conversation. Executive: Thank you, Sarah. Good day.

This script demonstrates several key techniques for engaging with C-level executives:

  • Respecting the executive’s time and getting straight to the point
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the company’s challenges and goals
  • Presenting clear, quantifiable benefits and results
  • Addressing high-level concerns like ROI and implementation
  • Offering a strong value proposition and guarantee
  • Proposing a specific next step with additional value

Conversation intelligence software is a technology that analyzes sales conversations —whether they occur via phone, video calls, or other communication channels—to extract valuable insights.

This allows sales managers to deliver targeted training that addresses specific weaknesses or reinforces successful strategies.

Here are some key features of conversation intelligence software:

  • Transcribing calls in real-time allows sales teams to easily review conversations and identify important details without having to manually sift through hours of recordings.
  • Conversation intelligence software can detect specific keywords, phrases, or sentiments. For instance, the software might identify when a customer expresses concern or interest, allowing sales reps to respond more effectively.
  • After analyzing a conversation, the software can generate summaries highlighting the key points, action items, and follow-up tasks.
  • Conversation intelligence tools often come with built-in analytics that track metrics such as talk-to-listen ratios, response times, and customer engagement levels.

Here are some tips on how to leverage this technology to enhance mock calls:

  • Review the exact wording and phrasing used by reps to refine their pitch and handling of objections.
  • Create a repository of successful call snippets for training purposes.
  • Build a library of common objections and use AI to randomly inject them into mock calls.
  • Use data from past calls to create realistic prospect personas with specific pain points and buying signals.
  • Easily share exemplary mock calls with the entire team for learning purposes.
  • Encourage reps to review each other’s mock calls and provide peer feedback using the software’s annotation features.

Mock calls should be a staple in any sales training program, and with the right technology, they can be more effective than ever. Sign up to try out Yesware’s sales engagement platform for free.
