In this exhaustive study, the authors endeavour to review the existing scheme for award star rating for hotels in India. In doing so, efforts were also made to compare some leading schemes from across the world, chosen on the basis of leading inbound tourist markets for India, to bench-mark the criteria catalogue and assessment/evaluation process. Along with many fresh recommendations, the authors also pitch for a rating-scale based scheme to capture the sensibilities of 'service quality'

Eco-friendly hotel managers institute programs that save energy and reduce solid waste while saving money. The present study illustrates that the Greek eco-friendly hotels have many benefits by implementing sustainable methods of operation. The benefits include a satisfactory decrease in the level of operating costs and a significant increase in the volume of reservations (up to 30%), as well as in the satisfaction rate of the guests. Moreover, green initiatives ameliorate the environment and society, as well. The study also identified various effective sustainable practices that can be considered to be a best practice model to encourage and assist more hoteliers to implement green initiatives in their lodgings. The model highlights the following best practices: the creation of a dedicated green team and affiliation with green associations; the optimal use of possibilities for financial support; the application of a green certification program; training and motivation of employees; the integration of the eco-label in the hotel’s marketing; the establishment of feasible and measurable targets for energy consumption and waste creation; the use of renewable energy resources; recycling; the electricity and water saving; and, finally, the offering of healthy, fresh and local food.

This study examines tacit knowledge spillover among lodging firms within a destination and how it contributes to sustainable destination development. Longitudinal data for this study were collected primarily through in-depth interviews with lodging firms’ managers and operators in a destination located in southern China. The findings suggest that tacit knowledge spillover in a region may lead to hospitality firm agglomeration. Furthermore, the eco-friendly hotel pioneers’ tacit knowledge spillover may, over an extended time period, enhance the eco-friendly initiatives and operations of local hospitality firms, which may contribute to the successful development of sustainable destinations. The findings also indicate that local government’s effective interventions tend to encourage and facilitate tacit knowledge spillover through establishing knowledge transfer mechanisms in the community, which is significant in the context of sustainable destination development.
