Economics and Econometrics

Study Level

This is a joint programme between the UCL School of Management and the Department of Economics offering a unique education and research experience to give students an advanced understanding of financial economics. This highly selective programme provides students with the skills needed to conduct insightful and original research, preparing them for an academic career in the field.

The MRes and PhD in Financial Economics is a joint programme between the UCL Department of Economics and the UCL School of Management.

The MRes will firstly provide quantitative training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and finance. These will be taught in the context of cutting-edge research and relevant applications. Secondly, it will provide you with analytic frameworks and transferable skills that will allow you to identify relevant and promising research topics, present ideas in order to obtain feedback, and provide feedback yourself.

The subsequent years (for students who progress from the MRes to MPhil) will focus on the skills you will need to run research projects to completion and to present these to various kinds of specialised audiences. Likewise, teaching skills will also be developed.

University College London

One of the world’s leading universities, UCL is London’s top multidisciplinary research university with an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching. Defining characteristics of a UCL education: An exceptional learning environment - UCL is rated joint-fifth in the QS World University Rankings - UCL has the best academic to student ratio in the UK (1:10) (The Guardian university league table 2015) - Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 29 people who are, or were, students or academics at UCL. - Based in Bloomsbury, central London, UCL is surrounded by the greatest concentration of libraries, museums, archives and professional bodies in Europe - UCL attracts top academics and students from 151 different countries, resulting in a vibrant and cosmopolitan academic community. A global leader in generating new knowledge - UCL is the top-rated university in the UK for research strength in the Research Excellence Framework 2014, by a measure of average research score multiplied by staff numbers submitted - Pioneering UCL research feeds directly into our graduate programmes, resulting in novel interdisciplinary programmes in emergent disciplines. Explore our 700 graduate programmes in our online prospectus - UCL’s research-based teaching methodology means that research is integrated into many of our degrees and students have the opportunity to make an original contribution to their field of study Advancing your career - UCL is the fourth highest rated university in Europe for employability (Global Employability University Ranking 2014) - UCL was awarded an Employer Review score of 99.4 out of 100 in the QS World University Rankings 2015 - The average starting salary for UCL Master’s graduates was £27,346 in 2013-14 (HESA 2013) A distinctive ethos - UCL was founded in 1826 to open up university education in England to those who had been excluded from it. In 1878, it became the first university in England to admit women students on equal terms with men - UCL’s ethos is strongly influenced by its spiritual founder Jeremy Bentham, the utilitarian philosopher, who famously said: "it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong” - This philosophy manifests itself today in UCL’s approach and commitment to tackling global problems and the importance it places on global citizenship - More locally, UCL is the only London university to be a Beacon of Public Engagement, working with partners to build closer involvement between universities, local communities and the wider public. What others say about UCL: “Complex problems require complex responses. The only institutions in our society that bring together a range of different actors from different disciplines are universities. And UCL is paramountly the absolute best place to go to look for this kind of multidisciplinary response to one of the greatest challenges facing the world.” Dr Richard Horton, Editor of 'The Lancet', on the UCL-Lancet Commission on Managing the Health Effects of Climate Change.

Security Design under Common-Value Competition [ SSRN ] [ slides ]

Revise and Resubmit, Econometrica

When investors compete for a common-value investment opportunity under dispersed information, they offer financing with flat securities as their compensation due to the winner's curse effect and the entrepreneur's informed selection effect. The signaling effect is dominated by these effects.

Best Paper in Finance Theory on the Job Market awarded by FTG, 2021

Share Issues versus Share Repurchases, with Philip Bond and Hongda Zhong [ SSRN ] [ slides ]

In a unified framework of firms' share issues and repurchases, firms' asymmetric choices of issue and repurchase methods emerge as a natural outcome under an informational friction.

Presentations:  Renmin University of China, AFA, SFS Cavalcade Asia-Pacific, University of Rochester*, Corporate Finance Day*, EFA, BSE Summer Forum, FTG Summer Meeting, Esade Spring Workshop, Tsinghua PBCSF, SGF Conference, CICF, LSE

Security Design under Two-Sided Asymmetric Information [ SSRN ] [ slides ]

When a firm designs a security-bid auction with both the firm and the bidding investors having some private information, the firm requires payments in the strongly steepest security family, both for signaling and for enhancing competition among investors.

  • Postgraduate Funding

Student Finance

If you are a UK or EU resident, you may be able to apply for a loan that will help you pay tuition and maintenance costs. There are two loans available:

Postgraduate Master’s Loan

Student Finance England  offers loans to home and EU students to study a postgraduate master's course. The size of this loan does not depend on your or your family's income.

Postgraduate Doctoral Loan

If you are starting a doctoral course on or after 1 August 2018, you can apply for a loan from  Student Finance England  to help you pay tuition and maintenance cos. The size of this loan does not depend on your or your family's income.

You will not need to start re-paying either of these loans until you are earning over £21,000 a year.

You may also be able to find funding from other places:

Research Councils

Based on the course that you intend to study, there are several research councils that may be able to help you, including:

-  Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). -  Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). -  Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). -  Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). -  Medical Research Council (MRC). -  Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). -  Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

You will need to be a "home resident" of the UK to apply. IF you are a EU resident, you are only able to apply to councils for tuition fees, not maintenance.

UCL Scholarships

You may be able to win an award or scholarship, which is open to students from the UK, EU and overseas. Go to  UCL’s Scholarships and Funding page  to find out more about how to apply and how much is available to you.

Sponsorship

If you're employed and considering a course, your employer may consider funding your studies. Many companies also sponsor students, as long as the course is linked to the business and you plan to work in this field after graduating. You can find out more about sponsorship by employers through  UCL Careers Service .

Career Development Loans

Career Development Loans  are available to UK residents, and generally last for two years. You can borrow up to £10,000 interest-free, but you will need to start re-paying the loan and paying interest a month after the end of the course.

Other Organisations

You may be able to find other bodies that offer funding for graduate students. If you are an overseas student, try contacting your own Ministry of Education to find out more. Organisations such as UNESCO, the EU Commission and the British Council often offer scholarships.

Furthermore, If you are a postgraduate research student and have completed your registration period, you will not be registered as a full-time student as you will no longer be paying any fees. Whilst you are writing up your thesis, the University will provide you with 'writing-up status' which will therefore allow you to apply for benefits if you meet the eligibility requirements. You may be able to claim Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit. This includes PhD students (part-time and full-time) who are in the writing up stage of their thesis. British-educated businesswoman denies making Hezbollah explosive pagers which killed at least 12 people

A British-educated businesswoman has denied allegations of manufacturing the pagers used in an audacious attack against Hezbollah .

The handheld devices killed at least 12 people and injured 3,000 after they simultaneously detonated across Lebanon and Syria on Tuesday afternoon in a suspected Israeli operation.

The Taiwanese company whose branding was on the technology claimed Budapest -based firm BAC Consultancy made the devices under a three-year brand licensing agreement.

Follow the latest updates here

But University College London (UCL) graduate Cristiana Barsony-Arcidiacono, the CEO of BAC Consultancy, said she was just a link in the supply chain and did not make the pagers.

“I do not make the pagers. I am just the intermediary. I think you got it wrong,” Ms Barsony-Arcidiacono told NBC News.

Around three grams of explosives are reported to have been placed into the AR-924 pagers in a sophisticated supply chain infiltration.

A Lebanese security source claimed Israel’s spy agency Mossad planted explosives in thousands of the devices months before they exploded, and one US official told Axios news the Israeli military moved to detonate the devices because it feared the sabotage plot had been exposed.

The Iran-backed militant group has vowed to retaliate against Israel, whose military declined to comment on the blasts.

Ms Barsony-Arcidiacono studied for a physics PhD at UCL between 2002 and 2006, according to her LinkedIn page.

She then went on to study at the London School of Economics and the University of London for various postgraduate qualifications between 2009 and 2017.

She also recently worked with the European Commission as an “evaluation expert” and as a “groundwater resource manager” for Unesco.

On her company’s website – which went offline on Wednesday morning – her work was described as “bridging technology and innovation from Asia”. The firm’s address was registered to a residential-looking two-storey building in Budapest, with its name posted on the glass door on an A4 sheet.

Hezbollah, which controls southern Lebanon, forms part of Iran’s so-called “axis of resistance”, which opposes Western and Israeli influence in the region.

A Hezbollah official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the detonation of the pagers was the “biggest security breach” the group had been subjected to in nearly a year of war with Israel.

The group opened a second front against Israel a day after the war in the Gaza Strip began, triggered by a Hamas attack inside Israel on 7 October.

Hamas, also backed by Tehran, killed around 1,200 people, with another 251 taken hostage. In response, Israel has bombarded Gaza from the air and ground.

More than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the offensive, health officials in Gaza have said. It has displaced nearly 90 per cent of the territory’s 2.3 million population.

How much does a postgraduate research degree cost?

When calculating the cost of a postgraduate research degree there are two elements to consider - tuition fees and living costs.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees will vary from programme to programme and depend on your fee classification . Check the  Graduate Prospectus  for information on what your fees may be for any particular programme.

Living costs

The amount spent on living costs may vary greatly from student to student and depend on lifestyle and individual circumstances. Information on the cost of study can be found on  UCL's cost of study page .

UCL Studentships and Scholarships

Uk research and innovation (ukri) studentships.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) are responsible for investing public money in research in the UK. UCL departments apply to specific Research Councils for funding and then nominate the students they believe should receive the awards.

Research Council studentships are open to UK and overseas residents. International students may also apply to a limited number of studentships with 'open eligibility'. This funding will usually pay your PhD fees and may also provide a stipend for living costs, depending on eligibility.

To apply for Research Council funding,   contact your UCL department directly   and they will confirm their application process.

For further information on eligibility and value, you can check the individual Research Councils' websites: Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Medical Research Council (MRC) Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

UCL Studentships

Individual academic departments may offer their own awards (wholly funded by them or jointly funded with an industrial sponsor). You can do a search of the UCL studentships that are currently available by using the   UCL PhD Opportunties Search.

UCL's Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs)   also provide research positions funded by the Research Councils.

You are also advised to check directly with your admitting department for the most up to date funding information.

If you receive a UCL studentship and have questions about how it is paid,   please read this page of information about your studentship .

UCL Scholarships

UCL also administers a range of scholarships for research students from the UK and overseas.   Use the scholarship finder to see what might be available .

Charities and Trusts

Some large research charities have substantial budgets for scholarships and grants.

Eligibility requirements for some of the major research charities are available through the links below:

  • Leverhulme Trust
  • Wellcome Trust

Many other smaller organisations provide funding to PhD students.   Turn 2 Us Grants Search   database contains information on over 3,000 charitable funds offering welfare and educational grants, as well as other support and services.

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online   is a portal for alternative sources of funding - especially charities - which can make awards (fees, maintenance, research costs) to any student regardless of subject or nationality.  UCL has purchased a licence to the Guide so it’s free for all students and staff to use. If you are a prospective student who has applied to the university, please   contact the Student Funding team  to access the PIN.

Lists of charitable grants and awards are kept in the following directories which are held in UCL libraries - see references below:

Government Loans

Some governments provide loans or finanical support to students at PhD level, so it is worth checking with your home government whether there is any support available.

Below are the governmental loans that the UCL funding team help to administer.

Postgraduate Doctoral Loan from Student Finance

Some students may be eligible for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan from Student Finance. This loan acts as a contribution towards the cost of study. It is unlikely that it will cover the cost of both tuition fees and maintenance. Students can borrow up to £29,390 (2024/5 figure) for their whole course.

Eligibility

Information on the loan including full eligibility details can be found on the Student Finance Doctoral Loan  website.

Please note that you must be doing a full standalone doctoral degree to be eligible for the loan. You will not be eligible for the loan if you are studying on a modular/flexible mode of attendance, or if you enter the second or third year of a doctoral course using prior attainment from previous study towards your doctoral degree under UCL's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme .

How your Postgraduate Doctoral Loan might affect your benefits

If you receive means-tested benefits, 30% of the maximum Postgraduate Doctoral Loan that is available in a single academic year is treated by the Department for Work and Pensions as being for living costs and hence will be considered income when assessing any benefit award. For benefit purposes, you will be treated as having this amount, regardless of whether you actually take up the loan.

Interest and Repayment

You’ll be charged interest from the day you get the first payment until your loan is repaid in full or cancelled.

Find out more about interest and repayment of Student Finance loans on the  Student Finance repayment website .

Sharia-compliant loans

The government has been looking into the possibility of an alternative  Sharia-compliant funding system  which would be available alongside traditional student loans. However, at present, this system is not yet in place.

UCL participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loans). This is the main U.S. Federal funding available to American students in the UK.

The processing of loans at schools outside the US is different from the process when applying to a school inside the US. Students applying to Direct Loans for study at UCL should follow the instructions carefully as we will not be able to administer your loan unless you submit that application to the Student Funding Office as outlined in the guidance.

Find out more about US Loans

Canadian Loans

Students from Canada may be able to apply for Canada Student Loans and provincial or territorial student assistance.

Find out more about Canadian Loans

Postgraduate research students who have a disability, mental health problem or specific learning difficulty and are being funded by one of the seven UK Research Councils can apply for Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs) to help with additional study-related requirements.

You should contact the Disability Adviser or named contact on disability matters at your Research Council for advice.

The UK Research and Innovation DSA Framework names the DSA contacts at each of the UK Research Councils .

If you have a disability, mental health problem, or specific learning difficulty and are   not   being funding by a UK Research Council, you may still be able to access some funding for additional study-related costs from   Student Support and Wellbeing .

Disabled students who are not awarded a Disabled Students’ Allowance may also be eligible for a  Student Health Association Bursary .

As a student, it is unlikely you will be able to claim benefits unless you have a disability or have children.

The charity  Turn2Us  have guides on what benefits students may be eligible for.

If you are experiencing problems with your benefits, contact the Student Union Advice Service .

Council tax

Full-time students do not need to pay for council tax

From time to time external organisations contact the UCL Funding team with funding opportunities. We place these on an online Hootboard notice board . UCL does not administer or take responsibility for any of these schemes. If you are unable to access the Hootboard when logged in to a Hootboard account, please sign out and refresh the page.

Some students choose to apply for personal loans provided by private finance companies. UCL is not affiliated with or able to endorse any private loan providers.

The UCL Doctoral School list some scholarship and funding opportunities on their website.

Online aggregators like   Postgraduate Studentships ,   Scholarship Search   and   Postgraduate Funding   list schemes.

Current PhD students

There are a number of   sources of financial support   for PhD students who are currently enrolled at UCL.

The Doctoral School Fellowship

The   Doctoral School Fellowship   is for current research students who, due to unforeseen circumstances, have their funding interrupted or completely withdrawn.

To qualify candidates must be progressing well academically and demonstrate that without financial assistance they would not be able to complete their studies.

The Financial Assistance Fund

The   Financial Assistance Fund   is for UCL students who fall into unexpected financial hardship.

Short term loans

Limited cash loans of up to £250   are available to students who have experienced a delay in their normal funding being paid.

External grants and funding

Some charities and organisations give financial support to current students studying particular subjects or in particular circumstances.

One of these is the  Funds for Women Graduates   who have a range of grants to help female PhD students with living costs.

Reduce costs and increase income

If you are struggling to cover the costs of study, you can   look at ways to reduce your costs and increase your income .

As a postgraduate student, you have the opportunity to become a   Student Residence Adviser   and eliminate your accommodation costs completely by living in UCL halls. In exchange, you work in a team supporting the undergraduates who live in halls, dealing with pastoral and disciplinary issues.

Student Residence Advisor positions are advertised on the   UCL Jobs site   in May each year.
