Lecture/presentation/event: “conduct" vs. “carry out” vs. “hold”

When talking about a lecture, presentation, or event, what verb should be used?

As far as I understand, any of conduct , carry out , or hold are possible here. What’s the difference, and which of them (if any) is the best option?

I’m particularly interested in something like this:

Professor A is going to [ INSERT VERB ] a lecture about B next Thursday, February 14 th .

  • 2 Your request for best option is going to require substantially more context. "Conduct" and "carry out" suggest you are doing the actual lecture. "Carry out" is often used when someone else has given an order and you are the one executing the order, i.e., "carrying out" the order. "Hold" could be used even if you are only the sponsor or host, not the actual lecturer. –  MetaEd Commented Feb 11, 2013 at 22:29
  • 2 Or you could just use lecture as a verb, and skip all the trouble: Professor A is going to lecture about B next Thursday. –  Kit Z. Fox ♦ Commented Feb 12, 2013 at 11:59

You give lectures and presentations. You can also deliver them. You hold an event if you organise it. You may conduct an experiment. You carry out some task.

What It Takes to Give a Great Presentation

  • Carmine Gallo

the presentation will be held by

Five tips to set yourself apart.

Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).

I was sitting across the table from a Silicon Valley CEO who had pioneered a technology that touches many of our lives — the flash memory that stores data on smartphones, digital cameras, and computers. He was a frequent guest on CNBC and had been delivering business presentations for at least 20 years before we met. And yet, the CEO wanted to sharpen his public speaking skills.

How to Prepare a Presentation in English without Stress

This lesson on how to prepare a presentation in English has been updated since its original posting in 2016 and a video has been added.

Giving a presentation is already difficult to do, even in your native language. But to give a presentation in English? Well, it can feel impossible, maybe even terrifying.

If you’re nervous, you might be worried about:

  • What if your audience doesn’t understand?
  • What if you use the wrong word or – worse – forget your words?
  • What if someone asks a question and you don’t understand?

These are all common questions about giving a presentation in English.  And the good news is: it is possible to give a presentation in English with confidence.

Whether you are presenting information about your company or presenting a proposal to a new client, presenting a new idea to your boss and colleagues or presenting to an audience at a conference, these are the strategies you need to best prepare for your next presentation in English.

These are exactly the same strategies native English speakers use to prepare for their presentations, too!

7 simple strategies to prepare a presentation in English.

Lesson by Annemarie

7 Strategies to Prepare a Presentation in English

Strategy 1: Plan, Plan, Plan

I know this sounds simple but this is maybe the most important step! That’s why I said it three times.

Before you do or write anything, spend some time thinking about what you want to say for this opportunity to present. You can use these two questions to help you:

  • Where is your audience now (before your presentation)? In other words: what do they currently know or not know? Is there something they are missing? Imagine your presentation is a map and Question 1 is your Point A.
  • Where do you want your audience to be after your presentation? What do you want your audience to know or do or think or believe after your presentation? On your presentation map, this is your Point B.

And now think of the steps you need to help your audience go from Point A to Point B.

Strategy 2: Know Your Who and Your What

Who is your audience?  You want to know the kind of people you will be speaking to so you can offer the right information, use the right language and think about the best visual aids.

For example: Imagine you design applications for smart phones. You’ve designed a great new application for children and you want to market/sell this application. As the designer you understand all the technical words and information about the application. And now you have the opportunity to present to a group of moms at a local school. It would be AMAZING if every mom in the audience bought your application.

How should you present to them? Do you want to use a lot of technical words? Will they understand them? Or should you use more common, everyday language that is clear and simple for everyone?

What is your purpose?  Generally, presentations are used to teach, to inform, to motivate. to persuade or to encourage action. When you understand the purpose of your presentation,  it will be easier for you to use the correct language and the correct style. It will also help you organize your presentation well.

“These are the seven strategies you need to prepare for a successful presentation in English, for any situation!”

Strategy 3: Get Organized

Presentations in English generally have 3 parts:

  • Opening (Introduction)
  • Body (Main Points and Details)
  • Closing (Summary)

In the next several weeks, you will learn exactly what you need for each section of your presentation. For now, it is important to think how you can organize your information into these 3 parts.

Important advice : Limit the number of main points in your presentation from 3 to 5 (no more than 5!). You want your audience to be well-informed but not overwhelmed.

Strategy 4: Show, Don’t Tell

In English, we love stories and pictures to help us remember information.

What about you? Have you ever listened to a presentation that has a LOT of numbers and statistics and data and dates? Do you remember any of that information now? Most people say no to that question.

In English, the expression “show, don’t tell” means  help your audience understand your main points through stories, visual aids and/or strong action words .

People remember stories, not numbers. When you can, use a story or a great visual aid to help your audience remember your key points.

For example: If you are presenting scientific information and you want to use a number to talk about how many cells are in the human body. According to an article by Smithsonian, there are 37.2 trillion cells in the human body!!! How many is that? I have no idea! Instead you could use a picture to help you. Imagine the largest sports stadium and every seat is filled. Show this picture and now tell people how many full stadiums you need for 37.2 trillion. With a picture, your audience can visualize this big number. And it will be easier to remember.

Strategy 5: Talk, Don’t Read

This one is so important. Please, please, please do not read your presentation.

For an audience, when someone reads a presentation it:

  • Shows you didn’t prepare well

Of course, you can use note cards to help you remember and to stay focused. But talk to your audience. Look at your audience. Move around. Be comfortable and natural.

The more you prepare, the more you practice, the easier this will be! And your audience will enjoy your presentation so much more!

Also, do not be afraid to go slow !

A good presentation does not mean speaking fast. Remember: this is the first time your audience is hearing this information. They need time to hear and to think about what you are saying. You will help them (and you!) if you speak slowly.

By speaking slowly, you will also have more time to think about what you want to say in your presentation, remember the key points and make fewer mistakes!

Strategy 6: Think Ahead

One of the scariest parts of a presentation in the Q&A ( = question and answer) part of the presentation. Most people fear they will not:

  • Understand the words of the question
  • Understand the accent of the person speaking
  • Know what to say
  • Remember the words they need

A Q&A session doesn’t always happen but if you have to do this, here is how you can calm your fears:

Review your presentation. Think about your audience (remember the  Who Are They  question!). Can you identify any likely questions?

Give your presentation to your peers, colleagues, friends, and family. Ask them what questions they have. It is possible they will have some of the same questions as your audience.

Now make a list of possible questions and prepare your answers ahead of time. Practice giving these answers when you practice your presentation.

The more prepared you are, the easier a Q&A session will be.

Strategy 7: Practice, Practice, Practice

I cannot say this enough. You must practice. Say your presentation out loud many times. Practice your presentation in front of your work colleagues, your friends, your family.

The more you practice, the more prepared and confident you will be.

And you can kiss some of those fears and nervous feelings goodbye !!* *[Idiom]  kiss something goodbye : to end or lose something. So, you can end your fears and end your nervous feelings!

Erin

Hi Annemarie,

Thank you so much for sharing your strategies. All the seven strategies look very important and helpful. I particularly strongly agree with the 7th one. Without practicing in advance, it seems for me to easily lose confidence while making a presentation. I might need to be more diligent to prepare all the things in advance.

Thanks again for your very useful lecture! Hope you have a great weekend.

You’re very welcome, Erin. I’m happy to know it was helpful to you! Best of luck as you continue to prepare for things in advance. 🙂

Thank you indeed.I am a syh person and I get excited easily.I should practise and record myself.

Dzmitry

It’s very useful and done with the help of a clear and simple language, as usual. I’m agree with Tatyana, it’s real and nice presentation about “how to be ready to the presentation”. 🙂 I have a big expirience in the presentations but all of them were in my native language or with the help of an interpreter. To my mind this strategies are common for all the languages and the most important thing not to neglect them and not to be lazy to do all the steps you’ve spoken about. So I think in a few weeks I’m going …  Read more »

Great advice, Dzmitry! Thank you for sharing. And you’re right, these strategies are true no matter what language you’re presenting in and it’s essential not to neglect a single step. I love your advice on including a little joke to relieve the stress. 🙂

Useful English phrases for a presentation

the presentation will be held by

Presentations have the advantage that many standard phrases can be used at various points. Perhaps you wish to welcome the audience, introduce the speaker and the topic, outline the structure, offer a summary, or deal with questions. In all these situations, you can apply a number of useful expressions that will make your presentation a linguistic success.

At the beginning of each presentation, you should welcome your audience. Depending on who you are addressing, you should extend a more or less formal welcome.

Good morning/afternoon/evening, ladies and gentlemen/everyone.

On behalf of “Company X”, allow me to extend a warm welcome to you.

Hi, everyone. Welcome to “Name of the event”.

Introducing the speaker

The level of formality of your welcome address will also apply to how you introduce yourself. Customize it to match your audience.

Let me briefly introduce myself. My name is “John Miller” and I am delighted to be here today to talk to you about…

First, let me introduce myself. My name is “John Miller” and I am the “Position” of “Company X”.

I’m “John” from “Company Y” and today I’d like to talk to you about…

Introducing the topic

After the welcome address and the introduction of the speaker comes the presentation of the topic. Here are some useful introductory phrases.

Today I am here to talk to you about…

What I am going to talk about today is…

I would like to take this opportunity to talk to you about…

I am delighted to be here today to tell you about…

I want to make you a short presentation about…

I’d like to give you a brief breakdown of…

Explanation of goals

It is always recommended to present the goals of your presentation at the beginning. This will help the audience to understand your objectives.

The purpose of this presentation is…

My objective today is…

After presenting the topic and your objectives, give your listeners an overview of the presentation’s structure. Your audience will then know what to expect in detail.

My talk/presentation is divided into “x” parts.

I’ll start with…/First, I will talk about…/I’ll begin with…

…then I will look at…

and finally…

Starting point

After all this preparation, you can finally get started with the main part of the presentation. The following phrases will help you with that.

Let me start with some general information on…

Let me begin by explaining why/how…

I’d like to give you some background information about…

Before I start, does anyone know…

As you are all aware…

I think everybody has heard about…, but hardly anyone knows a lot about it.

End of a section

If you have completed a chapter or section of your presentation, inform your audience, so that they do not lose their train of thought.

That’s all I have to say about…

We’ve looked at…

So much for…

Interim conclusion

Drawing interim conclusions is of utmost importance in a presentation, particularly at the end of a chapter or section. Without interim conclusions, your audience will quickly forget everything you may have said earlier.

Let’s summarize briefly what we have looked at.

Here is a quick recap of the main points of this section.

I’d like to recap the main points.

Well, that’s about it for this part. We’ve covered…

Use one of the following phrases to move on from one chapter to the next.

I’d now like to move on to the next part…

This leads me to my next point, which is…

Turning our attention now to…

Let’s now turn to…

Frequently, you have to give examples in a presentation. The following phrases are useful in that respect.

For example,…

A good example of this is…

As an illustration,…

To give you an example,…

To illustrate this point…

In a presentation, you may often need to provide more details regarding a certain issue. These expressions will help you to do so.

I’d like to expand on this aspect/problem/point.

Let me elaborate further on…

If you want to link to another point in your presentation, the following phrases may come in handy.

As I said at the beginning,…

This relates to what I was saying earlier…

Let me go back to what I said earlier about…

This ties in with…

Reference to the starting point

In longer presentations, you run the risk that after a while the audience may forget your original topic and objective. Therefore, it makes sense to refer to the starting point from time to time.

I hope that you are a little clearer on how we can…

To return to the original question, we can…

Just to round the talk off, I want to go back to the beginning when I…

I hope that my presentation today will help with what I said at the beginning…

Reference to sources

In a presentation, you frequently have to refer to external sources, such as studies and surveys. Here are some useful phrases for marking these references.

Based on our findings,…

According to our study,…

Our data shows/indicates…

Graphs and images

Presentations are usually full of graphs and images. Use the following phrases to give your audience an understanding of your visuals.

Let me use a graphic to explain this.

I’d like to illustrate this point by showing you…

Let the pictures speak for themselves.

I think the graph perfectly shows how/that…

If you look at this table/bar chart/flow chart/line chart/graph, you can see that…

To ensure that your presentation does not sound monotonous, from time to time you should emphasize certain points. Here are some suggestions.

It should be emphasized that…

I would like to draw your attention to this point…

Another significant point is that…

The significance of this is…

This is important because…

We have to remember that…

At times it might happen that you expressed yourself unclearly and your audience did not understand your point. In such a case, you should paraphrase your argument using simpler language.

In other words,…

To put it more simply,…

What I mean to say is…

So, what I’m saying is….

To put it in another way….

Questions during the presentation

Questions are an integral part of a presentation. These phrases allow you to respond to questions during a presentation.

Does anyone have any questions or comments?

I am happy to answer your questions now.

Please feel free to interrupt me if you have questions.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Please stop me if you have any questions.

Do you have any questions before I move on?

If there are no further questions at this point, I’d like to…

Questions at the end of a presentation

To ensure that a presentation is not disrupted by questions, it is advisable to answer questions at the very end. Inform your audience about this by using these phrases.

There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

I’ll gladly answer any of your questions at the end.

I’d be grateful if you could ask your questions after the presentation.

After answering a question from the audience, check that the addressee has understood your answer and is satisfied with it.

Does this answer your question?

Did I make myself clear?

I hope this explains the situation for you.

Unknown answer

Occasionally, it may happen that you do not have an answer to a question. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Simply use one of the following phrases to address the fact.

That’s an interesting question. I don’t actually know off the top of my head, but I’ll try to get back to you later with an answer.

I’m afraid I’m unable to answer that at the moment. Perhaps, I can get back to you later.

Good question. I really don’t know! What do you think?

That’s a very good question. However, I don’t have any figures on that, so I can’t give you an accurate answer.

Unfortunately, I’m not the best person to answer that.

Summary and conclusion

At the end of the presentation, you should summarize the important facts once again.

I’d like to conclude by…

In conclusion, let me sum up my main points.

Weighing the pros and cons, I come to the conclusion that…

That brings me to the end of my presentation. Thank you for listening/your attention.

Thank you all for listening. It was a pleasure being here today.

Well, that’s it from me. Thanks very much.

That brings me to the end of my presentation. Thanks for your attention.

Handing over

If you are not the only speaker, you can hand over to somebody else by using one of these phrases.

Now I will pass you over to my colleague ‘Jerry’.

‘Jerry’, the floor is yours.

We hope that our article will help you in preparing and holding your next presentation. It goes without saying that our list is just a small extract from the huge world of expressions and phrases. As always, the Internet is an inexhaustible source of further information. Here are the links to two websites that we would recommend to you in this context.

How to Prepare for a Presentation, with Examples

February 15, 2021 - Dom Barnard

This guide covers everything you need to know to prepare for your presentation. including what you need to think about beforehand, during and after the presentation.

1. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse (always aloud)

Once you have your presentation worked out, you will need to practice it, but even though you might think it’s the best way to have a flawless presentation, don’t memorise what you’re going to say.

That might sound like incredibly bad advice, but here’s why:

  • If you memorise your speech, you’ll get stuck in thinking you can only deliver your ideas in that way, and that stifles your creativity, and the chance for new thoughts and ways to put things that come up as you speak.

Not only that, but every  audience is different . Sometimes they laugh out loud, sometimes they sit and smile, and you never know which type of audience you’ll have until you’re live.

If you’re going off a memorised presentation, it’s much more difficult to break away from that to go with the flow on the day, and respond naturally to your audience.

  • If you forget your speech in the middle of it, you will be thrown, and you’ll have more chance of complete brain freeze, which really will knock your confidence.
  • Memorising your presentation gives you a false sense of security, which could leave you high and dry if something goes wrong. If you’ve only got your memorised speech, for example, what will you do if your PowerPoint freezes or your props break, and you can’t do what you were going to do?

Rehearse in front of colleagues, friends, a mirror, in virtual reality – always aloud. Make sure you spend plenty of time practising your presentation, it will make you feel much more relaxed if you know your material.

2. Memorise your opening line

Do, however, memorise your opening line. If you know how you’re going to begin, you’ll get a strong start and that will build your confidence.

Many speakers and stage actors find that the minute they’ve actually delivered their first line, the nerves are gone and they’re well into their stride.

3. Practise your speech from written notes

Writing your presentation out in your own handwriting will help you clarify your ideas and may well bring you new ones.

  • How to Write a Speech to Engage your Audience

4. Practise presentation flow

As well as practising for the ideas and what you want to say, practise how you want your presentation to flow. Think of it almost as a symphony, with high points, slow movements and crescendos. If it’s important, think about how you want your audience to feel, what emotions you want them to have, and when.

5. The power of silence

Don’t be afraid to pause and use the power of silence. A good pause can have a huge emotional impact. It allows people to really absorb what you are saying and react, and it’s vital to pause if you’re using humour so that the next part of your presentation doesn’t get lost underneath people’s laughter.

6. Have a backup

There’s nothing worse than the projector dying or finding that your laptop won’t communicate with the projector for some reason. If you know you have a backup, even if it’s only a pre-prepared flip chart, you’ll feel better, and you’ll be more confident.

7. Arrive early

Following on from that, arrive at least half an hour early so you aren’t feeling rushed, and so you have time to check your equipment and get your notes laid out ready to go. That gives you time to breathe and relax before you go on, knowing everything is as set as it can be.

8. Use physical props for a demo

Use physical props, if possible, for a demo. This can make you stand out and be more memorable among all the other speakers who only use PowerPoint, and it can add greatly to the impact of your presentation.

Video showing an example of using physical props during a live demo.

9. Structure your presentation

First, find out how much time you have to present, is it 10 minutes, 15, an hour? Prepare enough material for this time and have a couple of extra slides as backup – we tend to speak much quicker when nervous so you might find you finish your presentation too early. At some large conference events, timings may change on the day, be aware of this have a shorter version of your presentation in mind (i.e. know which slides to skip over).

  • How to Structure your Presentation, with Examples
  • Examples of Corporate Presentation Structures

10. Prepare for questions

Have a few backup slides for questions you think will arise from your presentation. It is sometime a tactic to explain a section briefly in your speech, so that you get a question about it afterwards. If you don’t understand the question, ask for it to be rephrased.

If there are no questions, it is not an indication how good or bad your presentation was. You many have explain your material extremely well, or simply that people are tired at the end of the day and want to go home.

  • Guide for Handling Questions after a Presentation

11. Prepare for where you are presenting

If you can, go to the room you are speaking in before the actual event. It gives you an idea of furniture layout, podium height, location, room size, audience size and lighting. You can then visualise the room while practising and avoid the shock of suddenly being faced with a huge room when you expected a tiny one.

Ask the organiser if you need any particular props, for example a table to help with your live demo.

Additional planning to think about before your presentation:

1. Purpose  – what outcome are we trying to achieve? How can results be measured? What will success look like?

2. Topic  – Novelty? Complexity? Technical?

3. People  – Who should attend? What do they already know? How are they going to help?

4. Timing  – When will it happen and how long will the presentation take?

5. Location  – Where will the presentation be held? Do you have access to the correct facilities for the presentation?

6. Papers  – Who is keeping minutes? Do you need to send out an agenda before the presentation? Background information required?

7. Visual aids  – Is a  projector required ? Boards?

8. Style  – Structure or unstructured, discussion style? How assertive should you be? How should the meeting items be organised?

12. Choose the signals to give to your audience

Before the presentation, think about these 5 topics:

  • Eye contact
  • Facial gestures
  • Body language

Decide how you will use each of these to reinforce your message. Use the table below for help.

PassiveAggressiveAssertive
Flat, monotonous, trails off, shaky, hesitant.Sharp, cold, loud, shouts, abrupt, clipped, fast.Controlled, firm, warm, rich, clear, even, loud.

How to Give a Persuasive Presentation [+ Examples]

A presentation aimed at persuading an audience to take a specific action can be the most difficult type to deliver, even if you’re not shy of public speaking.

the presentation will be held by

Creating a presentation that effectively achieves your objective requires time, lots of practice, and most importantly, a focused message.

With the right approach, you can create a presentation that leaves a skeptical audience enthusiastic to get on board with your project.

In this post, we'll cover the basics of building a persuasive presentation. Let's dive in.

→ Free Download: 10 PowerPoint Presentation Templates [Access Now]

What is a persuasive presentation?

In its most basic form, a persuasive presentation features a speaker who tries to influence an audience to accept certain positions and engage in actions in support of them. A good persuasive presentation uses a mixture of facts, logic, and empathy to help an audience see an issue from a perspective they previously discounted or hadn’t considered.

How to Plan a Persuasive Presentation

Want to make a persuasive presentation that connects with your audience? Follow these steps to win friends and influence people within your audience.

1. Decide on a single ask.

The key to convincing your audience is to first identify the singular point you want to make. A good persuasive presentation will focus on one specific and easy-to-understand proposition. Even if that point is part of a broader initiative, it ideally needs to be presented as something your audience can say "yes" or "no" to easily.

A message that isn’t well-defined or which covers too much can cause the audience to lose interest or reject it outright. A more focused topic can also help your delivery sound more confident, which (for better or worse) is an important factor in convincing people.

2. Focus on fewer (but more relevant ) facts.

Remember: You are (in the vast majority of cases) not the target audience for your presentation. To make your presentation a success, you’ll need to know who your audience is so you can shape your message to resonate with them.

When crafting your messaging, put yourself in your audience's headspace and attempt to deeply understand their position, needs, and concerns. Focus on arguments and facts that speak specifically to your audience's unique position.

As we wrote in our post on How to Present a Compelling Argument When You're Not Naturally Persuasive , "just because a fact technically lends support to your claim doesn't mean it will sway your audience. The best evidence needs to not only support your claim but also have a connection to your audience."

What are the target audience's pain points that you can use to make a connection between their needs and your goals? Focus on those aspects, and cut any excess information. Fewer relevant facts are always more impactful than an abundance of unfocused pieces of evidence.

3. Build a narrative around your evidence.

If you want to persuade someone of something, it’s not enough to win their brain -- you need their heart in it, too. Try to make an emotional connection with your audience throughout your presentation to better sell them on the facts you’re presenting. Your audience is human, after all, so some emotional tug will go a long way to shaking up how they view the issue you’re talking about. A little bit of emotion could be just what your audience needs to make your facts “click.”

The easiest way to incorporate an emotional pull into your presentation is through the use of narrative elements. As we wrote in our guide to crafting pitch decks , "When our brains are given a story instead of a list of information, things change -- big time. Stories engage more parts of our brains, including our sensory cortex, which is responsible for processing visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli. If you want to keep people engaged during a presentation, tell them a story."

4. Confidence matters.

Practice makes perfect (it's a cliche because it's true, sorry!), and this is especially true for presentation delivery. Rehearse your presentation several times before you give it to your audience so you can develop a natural flow and move from each section without stopping.

Remember, you're not giving a speech here, so you don't want your delivery to come across like you're reading fully off of cue cards. Use tools like notes and cue cards as ways to keep you on track, not as scripts.

Finally, if you can, try to practice your presentation in front of another human. Getting a trusted co-worker to give you feedback in advance can help strengthen your delivery and identify areas you might need to change or bulk up.

5. Prepare for common objections.

The last thing you want to say when someone in your audience expresses a concern or an outright objection during your presentation's question section is “umm, let me get back to you on that.”

Carefully research the subject of your presentation to make the best case possible for it -- but also prepare in advance for common objections or questions you know your stakeholders are going to ask. The stronger your command of the facts -- and the more prepared you are to proactively address concerns -- the more convincing your presentation will be. When you appear confident fielding any rebuttals during a question and answer session after your presentation, it can go a long way towards making your case seem more convincing.

Persuasive Presentation Outline

Like any writing project, you’ll want to create an outline for your presentation, which can act as both a prompt and a framework. With an outline, you’ll have an easier time organizing your thoughts and creating the actual content you will present. While you can adjust the outline to your needs, your presentation will most likely follow this basic framework.

I. Introduction

Every persuasive presentation needs an introduction that gets the listener’s attention, identifies a problem, and relates it to them.

  • The Hook: Just like a catchy song, your presentation needs a good hook to draw the listener in. Think of an unusual fact, anecdote, or framing that can grab the listener’s attention. Choose something that also establishes your credibility on the issue.
  • The Tie: Tie your hook back to your audience to garner buy-in from your audience, as this issue impacts them personally.
  • The Thesis: This is where you state the position to which you are trying to persuade your audience and forms the focal point for your presentation.

II. The Body

The body forms the bulk of your presentation and can be roughly divided into two parts. In the first half, you will build your case, and in the second you will address potential rebuttals.

  • Your Case: This is where you will present supporting points for your argument and the evidence you’ve gathered through research. This will likely have several different subsections in which you present the relevant evidence for each supporting point.
  • Rebuttals: Consider potential rebuttals to your case and address them individually with supporting evidence for your counterarguments.
  • Benefits: Outline the benefits of the audience adopting your position. Use smooth, conversational transitions to get to these.
  • Drawbacks: Outline what drawbacks of the audience rejecting your position. Be sure to remain conversational and avoid alarmism.

III. Conclusion

In your conclusion, you will wrap up your argument, summarize your key points, and relate them back to the decisions your audience makes.

  • Transition: Write a transition that emphasizes the key point you are trying to make.
  • Summary: Summarize your arguments, their benefits, and the key pieces of evidence supporting your position.
  • Tie-back: Tie back your summary to the actions of your audience and how their decisions will impact the subject of your presentation.
  • Final word: Try to end on a last emotional thought that can inspire your audience to adopt your position and act in support of it.

IV. Citations

Include a section at the end of your presentation with citations for your sources. This will make independent fact-checking easier for your audience and will make your overall presentation more persuasive.

Persuasive Presentation Examples

Check out some of these examples of persuasive presentations to get inspiration for your own. Seeing how someone else made their presentation could help you create one that strikes home with your audience. While the structure of your presentation is entirely up to you, here are some outlines that are typically used for different subjects.

Introducing a Concept

One common type of persuasive presentation is one that introduces a new concept to an audience and tries to get them to accept it. This presentation introduces audience members to the dangers of secondhand smoke and encourages them to take steps to avoid it. Persuasive presentations can also be a good format to introduce marco issues, such as this presentation on the benefits of renewable energy .

Once you get the process down, you’ll be in a better position to bring in sales, attract donors or funding, and even advance your career. The skills you learn can also benefit you in other areas of your personal and professional life as you know how to make a case and influence people toward it.

Will be held or would be held

The teacher said that the exam will be held on March 20, 2021

The teacher said that the exam would be held on March 20, 2021

Which one is correct?

Mehedi Hasan Niloy's user avatar

  • 3 The first is correct only if the exam hasn't yet taken place. Would be held could be used if the teacher made an announcement in the past about an exam which at the time had not yet happened. –  Kate Bunting Commented Feb 21, 2021 at 15:11
  • 1 Both are fine if time of utterance is before March 20 (i.e. - it's still meaningful to talk about when the exam will be held). But only past tense would is acceptable if we're looking at something reported after the exam has taken place. And native speakers habitually "backshift" in such contexts anyway, so the fact of backshifting itself doesn't inherently imply anything about whether the exam is still in the future at time of utterance. –  FumbleFingers Commented Feb 21, 2021 at 15:31

No backshift. . If we consider the direct speech: The teacher said,"The exam will be held on March 20, 2021. Then we have to change it into reported speech would give the following:

1.The teacher said that the exam will be held on March 20, 2021. 2.The teacher said that the exam would be held on March 20, 2021. Which one is correct?

Both are correct. In sentence 1 the verb, "will" is not back shifted and sentence 2 "will" is back shifted to "would" .

When backshifting is not necessary: .

Ref. Cambridge dictionary No backshift. We don’t need to change the tense in indirect speech if what a person said is still true or relevant or has not happened yet. This often happens when someone talks about the future, or when someone uses the present simple, present continuous or present perfect in their original words: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/reported-speech-indirect-speech

I would say "Yesterday he gave a presentation on x".

Both expressions are being used though. (to hold a speech or to hold a presentation)

MissFit

I prefer "give a presentation" or "make a presentation" or "deliver a presentation." "Conduct" seems fine too. To "hold a presentation" only sounds right to me in the sense of holding a meeting during which a presentation is made. If I reserve the meeting space, hire the speaker to make a presentation, and invite the audience members to attend, then I might say that I am holding a presentation--but the speaker that I hired is making/giving/delivering the presentation. To "hold a speech" is not an expression that I've ever heard. Speeches may be given, delivered, or presented.

AngelEyes

I personally wouldn't use the word, "hold." I like "gave" the most. I might say, for example: "He presented his speech on World Hunger to the panel." or "He delivered his presentation on Global Warming to the audience of car manufacturers." The word "gave" is really what comes to mind first in terms of "presentation." Angel Eyes

  • Oct 27, 2010

You can say "hold an event," so if the presentation is a standalone event, you can say "hold a presentation." But then it refers to the actual event itself and not solely to the act of actually presenting. But if speaking colloquially, you could word things ambiguously so that it could mean either or both. If you just mean the act of presenting one session at a multi-session conference, for instance, then "give a presentation," "deliver a presentation," or "present on ..." are probably the most common expressions, as others pointed out. If I was among many presenters at a multi-session conference, I absolutely wouldn't say "hold a presentation" to refer to my session. I would say that the conference organizers are "holding the conference" and that I am "presenting on ..." or "giving a presentation about ..." at that conference.

“Will Be Held” – Meaning Explained (Helpful Examples)

We might want to talk about meetings or events that are “held” at certain times. If you’re not entirely sure what this verb choice means, this article will help you to understand it. We’ll cover all there is to know about “will be held” as a phrase.

What Does “Will Be Held” Mean?

“Will be held” means that something “will be” arranged in the future. In this case, “held” is synonymous with the verb “arrange.” We use it whenever we want to set a time and date for an event or meeting that is coming up at some point.

will be held meaning

The key thing to take away from the phrase comes from the tense we use. “Will be held” is known as the future perfect tense.

“Will be” is the future perfect auxiliary verb we use when we try to modify a verb. In this case, the verb is “held” (which is the past participle of “to hold”). These two combinations create the perfect tense.

  • Future perfect = Auxiliary verb + past participle
  • Future perfect = Will be + held

The future perfect tense refers to an event that is likely to take place in the future. There is almost a guarantee of that event happening as well, which we can ensure based on our present choices and actions.

Examples Of How To Use “Will Be Held” In A Sentence

It might help you to see a few examples of the phrase in action. That should give you a good idea of what to expect from the future perfect tense when it gets used.

  • The meeting will be held on the 15th of January, and I expect you all to be there.
  • I have arranged it all, and the event will be held in three weeks.
  • It will be held on the fourth Thursday in August if you are free!
  • The business meeting will be held in the south hall, and you all need to arrive promptly.
  • I can say that it will be held in a few days, but I can’t tell you much more than that.
  • This money will be held for a few more days, but it must be removed after that.
  • The birthday party will be held at my grandparent’s house, and I hope you can all be there.

“Will be held” works whenever we want to show that something has been arranged. It allows us to explain the date, time, or venue based on whatever it is we are arranging with other people.

Is It “Will Be Held” Or “Will Be Hold”?

“Will be held” is correct because we need to use the past participle “held” when using the auxiliary verb “will be.” We cannot use the infinitive form “hold” with any auxiliary verbs because this does not create the future perfect tense that we need.

Auxiliary verbs do wondrous things to other verbs in sentences. However, to get them to their full effect, we need to make sure we use the correct form of “held.”

  • Correct: This event will be held in August.
  • Incorrect: This party will be hold at my house!

What Is The Difference Between “Will Be Held” And “Will Take Place”?

“Will be held” and “will take place” are synonymous. We use them both to show when an event or meeting has been arranged. It helps us to establish a time, date, or venue based on what we are talking about.

As we mentioned, the two are synonymous. We can see that in the following examples:

  • The business meeting will be held in five minutes, and you all need to be there.
  • My lunch meeting will take place in five minutes, so I have to rush off now.

As you can see, both examples have almost identical meanings. “Will take place” works when we know the exact time when something is happening, though this isn’t always strictly true. Sometimes, both phrases work with more general timings:

  • The meeting will be held in March.
  • This will take place in February.

Can “Going To Be Held” And “Will Be Held” Be Used Interchangeably?

“Going to be held” and “will be held” are also interchangeable. We can replace the future auxiliary verb “will be” with the synonymous verb “going to be.” Both work to create the future perfect tense, which is ideal to talk about future bookings or events.

  • The meeting is going to be held in five minutes.
  • The meeting will be held in five minutes.

Which Preposition Should I Use After “Will Be Held”?

It might help you to know which prepositions come after the phrase. Each preposition has a slightly different meaning, so we’ll separate them to make them easier to follow.

Will Be Held On

“Will be held on” is the phrase we use to set a very specific time for the event. “On” is a preposition associated with specifics, and we use it whenever we know the exact time or date when something will happen (which we then share with others).

  • This meeting will be held on Friday.
  • It will be held on the 5th of June.
  • My birthday party will be held on Saturday.

Will Be Held In

“Will be held in” is the more general phrase compared with “on.” We use it to refer to general times (i.e., a month or week rather than a specific day). It always works to show which venue within a building we might be hosting the event.

  • This meeting will be held in March.
  • My party will be held in February, but I haven’t decided when yet.
  • The event will be held in the hall downstairs.

Will Be Held At

“Will be held at” works to refer to the venue where the event takes place or the specific time. If we are using “at,” we can only refer to a time within a day. If we use it for a venue, it has to refer to the whole building or place we are talking about.

  • This meeting will be held at midday.
  • My party will be held at my parent’s condo.
  • This meeting will be held at half-past four.

Ramsey County: A public presentation on the Purple Line project to be held this week

A public virtual meeting will be held this week on the Purple Line Bus Rapid Transit project as well as an opportunity for comment.

Purple Line project staff will host a meeting at 12 p.m. on Wednesday via Microsoft Teams to share what staff have studied to compare two possible routes for the project, Bruce Vento Trail and Maryland/White Bear Avenue Corridors. The meeting will include a presentation and time for questions and comments.

The information shared on Wednesday will be similar to what was provided in the past two in-person open houses, according to a Met Council press release.

Microsoft Teams is viewable on browsers or can be downloaded on phones or desktops. The meeting can be joined by going to metrotransit.org/purple-line-public-engagement .

The Purple Line’s design and construction will be funded by Ramsey County and the federal government, according to the Metro Transit website. The Met Council will fund the operations and maintenance costs of the Purple Line.

“The project is working through the Capital Investment Grants Program, managed by the Federal Transit Administration, to seek the federal funds for the project,” according to Metro Transit’s website.

The project proposes a bus rapid transit line from downtown St. Paul into northeastern suburbs. The White Bear lake City Council in 2022 passed a resolution requesting that the line not enter their city. So now the route likely will travel from St. Paul up to the Maplewood Mall Transit Center, though options for the route to go further are being explored.

Project staff are currently evaluating a White Bear Avenue route, which would have 3,900 to 4,900 projected riders each weekday, as an alternative to the Bruce Vento Regional Trail Corridor route, which would have 3,800 projected riders each weekday..

The early estimated cost of the White Bear Avenue Corridor route is $420 million to $450 million and $370 million for the Bruce Vento Regional Trail Corridor route.

To learn more about that study as well as how to provide comments, go to metrotransit.org/purple-line-project-route-modification-study . Public comments can be provided up to Aug. 30.

2024 Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony Full Recap: Tom Cruise Repels from the Roof, Snoop Dogg Performs and More

Team USA's athletes ended their time in Paris with appearances by Tom Cruise and H.E.R

the presentation will be held by

It's time to say goodbye to the 2024 Olympics — and usher in another Games.

The Paris Games closing ceremony was held at Stade de France on Sunday, Aug. 11, and reunited the thousands of athletes who competed throughout 16 days of incredible victories and devastating losses.

While Team USA was present (again, clad in Ralph Lauren ), so were some of America's biggest stars, set to celebrate the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

H.E.R . sang the U.S. national anthem as part of the LA28 handover, while Mission Impossible  star  Tom Cruise   performed a skydiving stunt  (part live and part pre-recorded).

Keep reading for a full recap of the exciting festivities.

A Dramatic Performance of 'My Way' Closes Out the Paris Olympics

French songstress Yseult performed an epic and dramatic performance of "My Way" to conclude the 2024 closing ceremony.

The song was chosen due to its ties to both France and America, as the version popularized by Frank Sinatra was set to the music of French hit, "Comme d'habitude."

Yseult sang in English, with the final concluding notes accompanied by fireworks all around Stade de France.

Léon Marchand Enters the Arena with the Olympic Flame

French swimmer Léon Marchand is back with the Olympic flame, now entering Stade de France and taking the stage.

Alongside other athletes and IOC President Thomas Bach, they blew out the flame.

Paralympic athletes were then highlighted on the stage as the start of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris approaches.

Snoop Dogg Is Back in the U.S. — and Performing His Hits!

2024's Olympics ambassador Snoop Dogg is back home in California, and performing some of his biggest hits for the closing ceremony.

After Eilish's set concluded, Snoop Dogg performed "Drop It Like It's Hot" followed by "The Next Episode" with Dr. Dre.

At the conclusion of Snoop Dog's performance in Venice Beach, a cloud of smoke in the colors of the Olympic rings was set off.

Billie Eilish Performs 'Birds of a Feather' from Lifeguard Shack

Just as teased, Billie Eilish was part of the 2024 closing ceremony handover to Los Angeles 2028.

Following up the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eilish sang her latest hit, "Birds of a Feather" with help from her brother Finneas.

Eilish wore a Ralph Lauren polo in red, white and blue for her big moment, which had her singing from a classic Los Angeles lifeguard shack.

Finneas, too, was in his Ralph Lauren finest, wearing a blue blazer with the Team USA emblem.

Tom Cruise Repels from the Roof of Stade de France — and Gets Smooched by an Olympian

Tom Cruise delivered on his promise of an epic stunt, repelling from the roof of Stade de France and walking to the stage amid hordes of excited athletes — including one who stole a kiss on his cheek.

Cruise then accepted the Olympic flag from Simone Biles, before hopping on a motorcycle and hitting the streets of Paris.

He wound up in an airplane, eventually parachuting down to the Hollywood sign in pre-recorded footage. Cruise turned the sign into the Olympic rings, before handing off the bike to U.S. cyclist Kate Courtney.

Courtney delivered the flag to Olympian Michael Johnson, who delivered it to skateboarder Jagger Eaton.

Eaton and the flag ultimately ended up in Venice Beach, right in time for a Red Hot Chili Peppers performance.

Simone Biles Helps with the Olympic Flag Handover from Paris to Los Angeles

To officially begin the Summer Olympic Games hosting duties, Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo handed the Olympic flag over to Los Angeles' Mayor, Karen Bass.

Bass then walked the flag to Team USA's most-decorate gymnast, Simone Biles, who held the flag while H.E.R. sang the U.S. national anthem.

Ahead of the 2024 closing ceremony, it was announced that Tom Cruise would be performing a gravity-defying stunt to help usher in L.A. 2028.

As Thomas Bach, IOC president, gave a speech on Sunday, Cruise was spotted in the Stade de France getting put into a harness.

Other Artists — Including Ezra Koenig — Keep the Party Going with Live Performances

During the live performance section of the 2024 closing ceremony, "Nightcall" was performed by French EDM artist Kavinsky with help from Angèle. VannDa also joined the group on the stage.

This was followed by another Phoenix song, "If I Ever Feel Better." Then, Vampire Weekend lead Ezra Koenig joined the band for "Tonight."

Their mega-hit "1901" was next up, as the NBC cameras showed the Team USA athletes jumping and dancing next to the stage.

Phoenix Takes the Closing Ceremony Stage to Perform 'Lisztomania'

French indie band Phoenix took the stage at the 2024 closing ceremony to perform their 2009 hit, "Lisztomania," as athletes gathered around the artists and rocked out.

During the chorus, the full theatre could be heard singing, "Think less but see it grow / Like a riot, like a riot, oh / Not easily offended / Not hard to let it go / From a mess to the masses / Lisztomania."

Pianist Alain Roche Plays 'The Hymn to Apollo' from a Suspended Piano

Talk about incredible feats!

Pianist Alain Roche played 'The Hymn to Apollo' while being suspended from the air on his back, a piano also being held from the sky above him.

Eventually, opera singer Benjamin Bernheim joined him, standing in the middle of one of the rings while he performed the song.

A 'Golden Voyager' Arrives at the Olympic Games Closing Ceremony — from the Sky

Jamie Squire/Getty Images

Inspired by French history, a "Golden Voyager" arrived at Stade de France from the sky.

According to a media guide, the character is pulled from multiple references, including Génie de la Liberté, a gilded statue located in Place de la Bastille in Paris, as well as interstellar time capsule the Voyager Golden Record, which was launched into space in 1977.

With help from characters from the opening ceremony — the masked torchbearer and horseman — the voyager carried the Greek flag, in honor of the birthplace of the Olympics. They planted the flag amid the desolate and dark landscape created on the Stade de France stage.

A replica of "The Winged Victory of Samothrace," a statue of the goddess Nike that resides in the Louvre, then rose from the stage.

Other explorers then took the stage to help the voyager to exhume the Olympic rings.

Allyson Felix, Track and Field's Most Decorated Women, Honored as Part of Athlete's Commission

Allyson Felix was honored alongside other newly-elected members of the International Olympic Committee's Athlete's Commission on Sunday from the stage at Stade de France.

For these Games, Felix helped to create a family space in the Olympic Village for athletes with young children.

"It's an amazing place to start," she told PEOPLE of the space. "I would love to keep growing it. But now, it feels like a home . . . and that's what it's meant to be."

Winners of Women's Marathon Presented with Their Medals

The final victory ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games is being held with the biggest audience yet — the closing ceremony crowd of tens of thousands.

The winners of the women's marathon, held on Sunday morning, were presented with their medals during the ceremony. The Netherlands' Sifan Hassan won gold, Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa took silver and Kenya's Hellen Obiri was the bronze medalist.

Team USA's Athletes Call Olympic Games in Paris 'Incredible' — and 'Hot'

In a Team USA video of the athletes all dressed in their Ralph Lauren closing ceremony outfits, they were tasked with describing the Games in one word (though some used two — or three).

"Incredible" was a popular choice, though so was "hot" — in reference to the minor heatwave Paris experienced during the two weeks of events.

Katie Ledecky and Nick Mead Proudly Carry the U.S. Flag Into Stade de France

Arturo Holmes/Getty Images

Along with representatives of the other 204 delegations, the Team USA flagbearers, Katie Ledecky and Nick Mead, entered Stade de France proudly carrying the American flag.

In contrast to the opening ceremony — where the delegations did the Parade of Nations in boats on the Seine — Mead and Ledecky walked in with the other country's flagbearers.

"It's incredible," Mead told NBC's Mike Tirico from the stage at Stade de France. "I'm so honored to be standing next to Katie to represent the us and the sport of rowing as the first rowing flagbearer."

The U.S. was the last country to enter the arena, as California will be the next to host a Games.

Only then, did the rest of the athlete delegations enter the arena to join Ledecky and Mead.

The Closing Ceremony by the Numbers

There's a lot involved in making sure this closing ceremony goes just right.

270 artists and performers are participating, with 9,000 athletes and staff expected as well, according to a media guide.

The Stade de France drew in over 71,000 spectators — and it's a good thing, as there were 35 days of rehearsal leading up to the big event.

French Swimmer Léon Marchand Begins the Return Journey of the Olympic Flame

French swimmer Léon Marchand, who won five medals — including four golds — this Olympic Games, entered the Jardin des Tuileries and grabbed a small gold lantern containing a flame.

Marchand, 22, then walked toward the Louvre with the lantern. According to a media guide, the small lantern contains the Olympic flame.

Interestingly enough, the 2024 cauldron was not actually lit by a real flame — instead, it was a combination of LED lights and a water mist creating the burning effect.

Closing Ceremony Kicks Off with Performance by French Artist Zaho de Sagazan

Underneath the 2024 Olympic cauldron, French singer Zaho de Sagazan performed a rendition of "Sous le ciel de Paris," a song original made popular by French icon Edith Piaf.

De Sagazan was accompanied by a choir from the Haendel-Hendrix Academy for the performance in the Jardin des Tuileries.

Team USA's Closing Ceremony Flagbearers Are Katie Ledecky, Nick Mead

Much like for an Olympic opening ceremony, the closing ceremony also highlights two athletes from each country as flag bearers.

The chosen Olympians for Team USA for the Aug. 11 closing ceremony are: Swimmer  Katie Ledecky  and  rower  Nick Mead.

In a statement at the time of the announcement, Ledecky — now the most decorated female American Olympian — said, "I am so proud of this team’s accomplishments in Paris and excited to celebrate with my teammates on Sunday."

WATCH: Harris and Walz speak at campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris promised Saturday to work to eliminate taxes on tips paid to restaurant and other service industry employees, echoing a pledge that her opponent, Republican Donald Trump, has made, and marking a rare instance of political overlap from both sides.

Watch the event in our player above.

Harris made the announcement at a rally on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where the economy relies heavily on the hotel, restaurant and entertainment industries. Trump vowed essentially the same thing at his own rally in the city in June — though neither he nor Harris are likely to be able to fully do that without actions from Congress.

“It is my promise to everyone here that, when I am president, we will continue our fight for working families of America,” Harris said. “Including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”

Trump responded on his social media site a short time later, posting that Harris “just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy.”

“The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes!,” the former president wrote. “This was a TRUMP idea – She has no ideas, she can only steal from me.”

Harris’ campaign said afterward that as president she would work with Congress to draft a proposal that includes an income limit and other provisions to keep hedge fund managers and lawyers from structuring their compensation to try to take advantage of the policy. She also would push for the proposal alongside one to increase the federal minimum wage.

Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, came to Nevada as the final stop of a five battleground-state blitz in which their party has shown new energy after President Joe Biden exited the race and endorsed Harris. On Sunday, the vice president is holding a San Francisco fundraiser that has already raised more than $12 million, her campaign said, with House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi among those set to speak.

WATCH: Harris campaign continues battleground state blitz as Trump agrees to debate

There were 12,000-plus people inside the campus basketball arena on Saturday and, before the event started, local law enforcement halted entry to the event because people were becoming ill while waiting outside in 109-degree heat to go through security. About 4,000 people were in line when the entrances were closed.

Walz referenced that during his speech, but turned it into an applause line by telling Nevada, “don’t worry, we’re going to be back a lot.”

As part of the trip, Harris is hoping to build greater support among Latino voters. In 2020, Biden narrowly defeated Trump by 2.4 percentage points in Nevada.

The 60,000-strong Culinary Workers Union announced its endorsement of Harris. About 54 percent of the union’s members are Latino, 55 percent women and 60 percent immigrants. The union also issued a statement supporting Harris’ call for a higher minimum wage and to “ensure that there are no taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”

Harris made her promise on eliminating tip taxation as part of a broader appeal to strengthen the nation’s middle class, seizing on a theme that was a centerpiece of Biden’s now-defunct reelection bid.

“We believe in a future where we lower the cost of living for America’s families so they have a chance, not just to get by, but to get ahead,” she said.

AP VoteCast found in 2020 that 14 percent of Nevada voters were Hispanic, with Biden winning 54 percent of their votes. His margin with Hispanic voters was slightly better nationwide, a sign that Democrats cannot take this bloc of voters for granted.

“There’s an incredible energy here among the college students and community members who are coming together to support and listen to our next president, Kamala Harris,” said Imer Cespedes-Alvarado, 21. Studying political science at UNLV, Cespedes-Alvarado is a first generation American citizen who spent his childhood in Costa Rica before making the difficult decision at 16 to return alone to the U.S. for better opportunities.

The vice president also promised to tackle immigration, leaning heavily into the issue as she did the previous night during a rally in Arizona.

“We know that our immigration system is broken, and we know what it takes to fix it,” Harris said in Las Vegas. She also endorsed an “earned pathway to citizenship” for some people in the country illegally and slammed Trump, who she said “talks a big game about border security but he does not walk the walk.”

The vice president has in recent weeks tried to seize the political offensive on an issue that Trump and top Republicans have frequently used to slam her and the Biden administration. In doing so, Harris is hoping to drive a wedge with Republicans.

Because the vice president’s portfolio in the Biden administration included the root causes of migration, and due to some of her comments before the 2020 election, many leading GOP voices have sought to portray her as weak on the southern border and enabling illegal immigration.

Trump himself has said of Harris, “As a border czar, she’s been the worst border czar in history, in the world history.”

WATCH: Republican mayor from border state explains why he just endorsed Harris for president

The former president proposed mass deportations if he returns to the White House, but AP VoteCast found in 2020 that nearly 7 in 10 Nevada voters said that immigrants living in the United States illegally should be offered the chance to apply for legal status.

Still, policy aside, many of the rallygoers in Las Vegas said they were thrilled to see the new energy Harris and Walz have brought to the race.

Krista Hall, 60, and her husband Thaddeus Hager, 58, said they haven’t been more excited about an election since Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008.

“This is as electric, if not more than,” Hall said, noting that they attended several Obama rallies at the time. Hager said he’s confident that Harris and Walz will “win in a landslide.”

The Democratic ticket over the past week also visited the crucial midwestern “blue wall” states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. Along with Nevada and Arizona those states represent 61 electoral votes that could be essential for reaching the 270 threshold required to win on Election Day.

Brian Shaw, a Republican from northern Nevada, said Harris’ arrival on the top of the ticket could make it harder for Trump to win because Biden was a “pitiful candidate” and there’s little time to expose the vice president’s “incompetence.” He said he attended Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s rally in Reno on July 30 and found him to be “likable, capable, polished as a politician, but not veneered.”

Weissert and Boak reported from Washington. Associated Press writer Scott Sonner in Reno, Nevada, contributed to this report.

Why do US parties hold presidential conventions? What to know, in 500 words

Conventions are where US political parties officially choose their presidential candidates. But how do they work?

2020 US election signs

One by one, states across the United States hold primaries and caucuses in the lead-up to a presidential election, allowing voters to weigh in on their favourite major-party candidates.

But those state-level votes ultimately culminate in a single event: the party convention.

‘a lack of trust’: how deepfakes and ai could rattle the us elections, us elections 2024: who will be donald trump’s vice president, us vice presidential candidates: everything you need to know.

It is at those conventions that the Democratic and Republican parties generally confirm their respective nominee for the presidency, based on the outcome of the primaries and caucuses.

Last month, Donald Trump was officially named the Republican nominee at a convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Now, it is the Democrats’ turn, as the party gathers next week in Chicago, Illinois, to hold its convention.

The meeting concludes on August 22, with Kamala Harris set to take the stage to rally Democrats behind her White House campaign.

So how do the national conventions work?

Elaine Kamarck, a senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution, described the conventions as “the last word” in the presidential nomination process.

“The legal authority for choosing the nominee of the party is with the convention, not actually with the primary voters.”

Each convention includes a series of procedural votes, including on event rules and the party’s platform, but the main event is undoubtedly the presidential nomination.

The nomination is confirmed in what’s called a “roll call”, where each state announces from the convention floor how many delegates it is awarding the nominees.

Delegates are generally assigned to vote for a candidate according to their state’s primary or caucus results. A certain number of delegates, however, are “unpledged”, which means they can cast their vote however they please.

If a candidate wins a majority of the delegates, they win the nomination.

In some election years, including 2024, this process is considered largely ceremonial because the presumptive nominees are known before the conventions are even held.

Harris was confirmed as the Democratic nominee after winning an early virtual roll call. A “ceremonial” roll call with still happen at the Chicago convention, though.

To sum it up another way: The party conventions involve a lot of procedures and ceremony, but they typically mark the last step in the Republican and Democratic parties’ presidential nomination process.

In effect, the conventions are an opportunity for Republicans and Democrats to unite around their respective picks and build enthusiasm before an election.

Presidential nominees also have historically announced their choice for vice president at the party conventions, adding to the buzz.

Party conventions didn’t always hold such a prominent place in presidential races, though.

US presidential nominees were once chosen by their respective parties behind closed doors.

That changed in the 1830s, when both the Republicans and Democrats began holding conventions to decide who would seek the presidency.

Those early conventions were different from the ones we know today: States did not hold primaries or caucuses for many of the first conventions, meaning the nominees were chosen by key members of each party rather than as a result of popular votes.
