You will review biblical perspectives on teaching and learning, survey principles of adult education, and explore best practices of course design and development. You will engage in guided practice of bibliographic (text-based) research that will prepare you to write a doctoral dissertation in Practical Theology. As a Practical Theology PhD student, you may choose to focus your study in the areas of Chaplaincy, Homiletics, Moral Theology, Pastoral Care, or Pastoral Theology.

The PhD program is accredited professionally by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS), as well as regionally by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and nationally by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE).

The entire PhD program uses online modality, so that you never need to come to the Columbia campus.

The three foundational seminars are largely asynchronous, but with a synchronous component. Instructors facilitate two-hour discussion group sessions of six to eight students that meet five to eight times throughout each semester.

In February 2022 the ATS Board of Commissioners approved a three-year experiment to offer a non-residential PhD degree as an exception to Standard 5.15, through a combination of online courses (synchronous and asynchronous) and one-on-one faculty mentoring sessions.

The modified-European model combines the strengths of both the North American and European models. You enter the program with a preliminary idea of the topic for your dissertation, and the coursework in the three foundational seminars helps you refine your topic to be substantive, coherent and focused. After those seminars, you engage in your dissertation research, writing and defense, which comprises 80% of the studies.

Total tuition for the program is 25–50% lower than the cost of other seminary PhD programs and includes the cost of textbooks.

As a PhD student, you will receive a free copy of Accordance Bible Software that you may use as long as you are pursuing your doctoral studies. Upon graduation, you own the software.

If you are pursuing work related to Practical Theology, you must show transcript evidence of having completed four semesters of Greek and/or Hebrew in any combination.

In order to have as wide access as possible to scholarly literature related to your dissertation topic, Practical Theology students demonstrate proficiency in one theological research language as part of their PhD studies. The process of collecting a working bibliography for your dissertation usually helps you identify the specific language you will pursue.

The wordcount for your dissertation is 90,000–110,000 words, including the introduction, the body, the footnotes, the conclusion and the bibliography, but not the front matter.

We will work with you to recruit a dissertation mentor whose areas of interest and expertise align as closely as possible with your topic. Since the majority of our mentors come from outside the seminary, the range of topics you may pursue is broad, and you have the opportunity to work closely with an expert in your field of research.

warnborough college - online theology program

PhD in Practical Theology – Online Learning

This most advanced programme is for serious Christian Leaders who already have a Master’s degree of some kind from a seminary or college in Theology, Biblical Studies, or similar, and/or leaders with extensive biblical study and leadership experience that can be proven (an example might be a long term senior pastor of a major church that has thousands of pages of bible study and sermon notes).  The PhD program is flexible, yet comprehensive in scope and allows biblical scholars to tailor the program to suit their specific needs.  Candidates on the program will get to equip themselves with the full armor, and come to truly understand how the sword of the Spirit is the Word of God (Eph 6:17).

The PhD is open to students who have completed an MA in Theology of some kind, or an MA in Ministry or Biblical Leadership.  The requirement is to complete 160 ECTS credits, 80 US-style credits.  These credits are split as follows:

  • 3 modules (24 ECTS credits)
  • PhD Dissertation (136 ECTS credits)

Total = 160 ECTS credits

The Dissertation (deep investigation into a subject of Practical Theology, books or series of books of the Bible) should be approximately 90,000 words.  Students will be required to take this subject into new waters, the hallmark of a PhD, and this may require extensive research or even trips to appropriate sites.  In some instances, you may be able to transfer credit / exit points from your prior learning ( Recognition of prior learning ), or apply something you have already done, but this is very rare.  An example would be if you had spent three years teaching the book of Acts and published a book on the subject.  This would be relevant, but then the question would become, what do you see that is new?  Never forget that this is the highest level and Warnborough is known for tough academic standards.  A PhD committee will explore your work and you will have to defend it as groundbreaking and intensive.

The modules are delivered online and through direct communication with your mentor, but are merely to fine tune https://www.caladrius.com/online-pharmacy/ your skills and prepare you for the research and writing.  The three modules are a month in length and consist of:

  • Bible Overview and Exploration of Practical Theology Topics.
  • How to Develop a Relevant and Cutting-Edge Dissertation Topic and perform the necessary research.
  • Editing and Re-Editing. How to Fine Tune your Topic and Present your Dissertation Idea for Approval.  This may be repeated until your idea is specific and focused and you are ready to proceed.

After those Modules, which as you can see are designed to help you develop your topic and prepare for the strenuous research, you will need to work with your mentor to divide your work into 160 ECTS credits.  All research work must be approved by the Academic Board in the first instance, and you may receive further questions of clarity from your committee.  Because of the flexibility of the WCI program and large numbers of possible topics, learners can work with their mentor to structure their program in the context of their professional and academic goals.  Always keep in mind that the idea within this program is to be practical or pragmatic in your approach.  Will this idea be useful and push the theological world forward?

The Dissertation (called a Thesis in Europe) should be a comprehensive study of an area of Practical Theology and composed in academic and research paper style (MLA preferred, but others including APA and footnote accepted), with ample sources and textual quotes (typically a minimum of 100 sources).  The resulting Dissertation/Thesis should be no less than 90,000 words (approximately 300 pages), and no more than 120,000 words or approximately 400 pages (Times New Roman 12 font double space).

The full program costs Euros €24,000 (approximately US$28,700).

You can pay in 9 equal instalments every 4 months. Alternatively, you can propose a different plan for our consideration.

Scholarships

Mature Students (60 years & over) automatically receive a scholarship of €3,000.

Other scholarships are available for those who merit it academically and/or financially.  Mature Students DO NOT have to complete an Application for Scholarship .

Program Details

Our students come from all over the world and represent a wide range of Christian traditions. We are thus both “intercultural and interconfessional.” This creates exciting conversations and leads to new insight for doctoral learning community members while learning from their colleagues. Intercultural and interconfessional conversation is a must for quality scholarly production and this is uniquely part of the seminar experience.

We train our students to present at academic conferences from their very first semester. We run an academic conference at the end of each semester and coach our students for success from the start.

This focus on a theology of action, both as theologizing from the praxis of ministry as well as entering into the entire Christian theological enterprise from the standpoint of praxis, is at the heart of this doctoral program. We seek to provide robust scholarly formation through a community of teaching and learning that embraces spiritual, human, intellectual, and pastoral dimensions.

This is the only Ph.D. in Practical Theology (PT) offered by our faculty in theology, biblical studies, and ministry. Our unique focus gives students an extraordinary depth. We do “all PT all the time” without distraction. We have no other doctoral program specialization in theology, biblical studies, or ministry. Other institutions that offer the Ph.D. in Practical Theology offer other doctoral specializations and relatively few courses and attention to practical theology.   We define PT using both definitions, which is atypical and gives students many more options. We approach practical theology as both “theologizing from the practice of the arts of ministry” and “a point of entrée into the entire theological enterprise from the standpoint of praxis.” This gives space for student interest and engagement. We encourage and support a wide range of specializations.   Our students come from all over the world and represent a wide range of Christian traditions. We are thus both “intercultural and interconfessional.” This creates exciting conversations and leads to new insight for doctoral learning community members as they work within their particular context while learning from their colleagues. This is especially appropriate for practical theology since the emphasis is on practice, not dogmatic theological debates. Intercultural and interconfessional conversation is a must for quality scholarly production and this is uniquely part of the seminar experience.

We train our students to present at academic conferences from their very first semester. We run an academic conference at the end of each semester and coach our students for success from the start.   Students can petition for permission to pursue study on a distance basis by participating live in the precandidacy courses, which are offered Mondays and Thursdays 5-9pm ET, via Zoom.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have at least a master’s degree in theology or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or the recognized equivalent, if the degree is from outside the United States. Applicants without a graduate degree in theology or a closely related field may be considered if they hold a recognized master’s degree and have 15 graduate credits in theology. Applicants in the process of completing the master’s degree at the time of admission will be considered if they can demonstrate the likelihood of completing that degree on or before the start of doctoral study. Official transcripts of all studies in institutions of higher education must be sent directly to the Office of Admissions from the institutions attended by the applicant. The most recent degree is generally the most important to document. Applicants should arrange for transcripts to be sent to Palm Beach Atlantic University, ATTN: ADMISSIONS, 901 South Flagler Drive, PO Box 24708, West Palm Beach, FL 33416. Official electronic transcripts may be sent to [email protected] or [email protected].

Applicants who have completed graduate level coursework at an institution outside of the U.S. that is not accredited by a U.S. regional accrediting organization or the equivalent must have a course-by-course and GPA equivalent evaluation conducted by an accredited member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). PBA is a corporate client of Spantran, a NACES member. PBA can directly provide Spantran copies of the official transcripts received by PBA. Applicants can request a Spantran transcript evaluation form, which includes payment information for Spantran credentials review, and return that form as part of the application process. The typical processing time for credentials review is 10 business days.

Applicants are urged to submit an academic-style curriculum vitae following a generally accepted format of their choosing. Such formats ordinarily include a listing of a person’s educational history, experience, and honors or awards. Entries should be given in descending chronological order. Any publications or conference papers presented should also be listed, ideally in a format following the Chicago Manual of Style. A traditional resume is acceptable in lieu of a formal curriculum vitae.

The writing sample should demonstrate the applicant’s readiness to embark upon scholarly research and writing. It will ideally be theological in nature and reflect an area of the applicant’s current scholarly interest. It may consist of one or more papers but must include no fewer than twenty pages. Applicants are encouraged but not required to follow the Chicago Manual of Style in their writing sample.

Applicants should request at least three recommendations that give evidence of scholarly potential as well as personal skills for the applicant as a self-motivated and peer learner within a scholarly community of teachers and learners together. These letters should mention how long and in what capacity the recommender has known the applicant, offer some specific observations about the applicant’s personal qualities and readiness to proceed to a Ph.D. in practical theology, as well as scholarly interests, if known, and potential to learn effectively at a distance, if is something about which the recommender feels competent to comment. At least two of the three letters should be written by a scholar holding the doctoral degree, ideally a theologian, who should specifically attest to the readiness of the applicant for theological scholarship. Recommendations should be in the traditional form of a letter on letterhead and should be sent as scanned attached files to the Program Director directly from the person writing the letter of recommendation.

Applicants from a country where English is not the primary language of instruction are required to submit the results of an English language proficiency exam, such as the TOEFL (minimum 79), IELTS (minimum 6.5) or Duolingo (minimum 105). This is not required for applicants holding an undergraduate or graduate degree from an institution in the U.S. or for applicants who have completed a course of study in the English language outside of the U.S

This is a 3-5 page articulation of the applicant’s background and aspirations sufficient to understand why the applicant seeks a Ph.D. in practical theology. The applicant should show understanding of the approach and design of the Ph.D. program, including particular course requirements as appropriate to the applicant’s interests. Specifics regarding an applicant’s intellectual interests, including potential dissertation research, should be included. Headings should be used. Some find it helpful to address three major questions: “Why a Ph.D.?” “Why practical theology?” “Why PBA?” Applicants who desire to participate on a distance basis (synchronous only, courses meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 5-9pm Eastern Time) should include a brief request to pursue pre-candidacy studies on a distance basis, noting sufficient computer equipment, internet access, and online experience to facilitate participation from a distance. They should also note their acceptance of the requirement to participate in person for the opening weekend and end-of-semester academic conference in every fall and spring semester of pre-candidacy.

This is the single most important part of the process. It occurs after all other required documentation has been submitted by the deadline, which is ordinarily January 31. Because faculty are collectively responsible for admission decisions, the personal interview is before core doctoral faculty. Interviews are organized and scheduled by the director of the Ph.D. program, ordinarily for late February. They are to take place via videoconference using an Internet-based video connection with the applicant. Applicants are responsible for ensuring the quality of their signal and equipment

Official electronic transcripts may be sent to [email protected] or [email protected]

Any publications or conference papers presented should also be listed, ideally in a format following the Chicago Manual of Style .

Historical Geography in the Holy Land: A Survey of the Holy Land: Geography, Archaeology, Architecture, and History HGH-1500

The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with the geography of the Holy Land. All of the sites important to the development of the Nation of Israel and the Ministry of Jesus are studied in context with special emphasis on the unique geography of the Holy Land.

Mormonism: Historical, Theological, and Evangelistic Survey MOR- 1510

Course Purpose: Cultured, refined, socially acceptable, educationally skilled, evangelistically engaged, and religiously committed -- these are descriptive of the Mormon faith. The looming question for the evangelical community is: Where does the Mormon religion fit? Is Mormonism another denomination within Christendom or is there another dynamic involved? This course explores answers to these questions historically and theologically with evangelistic application.

Personhood from a Biblical Perspective PH-1502

Course Purpose: To direct the student to a Biblical foundation for understanding God’s idea for personal self-awareness. To lead the student through a Biblical assessment of the so-called “self-esteem” movement. To compare and analyze the prevailing secular attitude regarding self-esteem over against the Scriptural teachings related to these attitudes. As a result, the student will be able to understand, and explain the history behind the sex education and abstinence movements, and will be able to apply Biblical principles to the instruction of children on God’s Life process.

Doctrine of Christ DCH -1510

The historicity, humanity, and deity of Jesus are not just a matter of curious interest for the believer. These tenets are the basis for the Christian faith. The goal of this course is to examine what Scripture has to say about Christ, especially His person and His work. These two items must be considered in connection. The value of His death, for example, is seen in Who He is. It is not enough just to know who He is. It is not enough just to know what He did. It is important to know Who He is in light of what He did. This adds depth of significance to both.

Readings in the Intertestamental History of Israel RHI-1501

The purpose of this readings course is to expand the student's understanding of what is known as the "Intertestamental Period" of Biblical History, and how that period of about 400 years between the writing of Book of Malachi, and the birth of Jesus Christ influenced the Jewish world, and laid the foundation for the Christian era.

Biblical Truth and Worldview Conflicts BTWC-1510

Course Purpose: This multidisciplinary apologetics course considers how our big-picture "worldview" concepts of ultimate realities, including God, the world, life, death, our own origins and destinies, and concepts of meaning and value (truth vs. falsity, right vs. wrong, good vs. bad, valuable vs. worthless) are tied to our beliefs about which information is foundationally true and reliable. Various worldview elements are examined, theistic vs. atheistic, creationist vs. evolutionary, Biblical vs. humanist, and eternal perspectives vs. temporal perspectives. Critical issues regarding cosmic and human origins are specially analyzed, based upon Scripture-provided truth (especially Genesis), including the age of the earth, the original and renewed Dominion Mandate, and the laws of life and death. The crucial and unique authority of the Holy Bible is emphasized.

Advanced Biblical Directionism Counseling BD-702

The purpose of this course is to increase the doctoral student’s appreciation for the Bible as an adequate handbook for the human mind, and to supply the student with an executable system for using the Bible as a counseling model.

Online PhD in Theology Degree Guide

Table of Contents

For many theology students considering a career in academia, earning a doctorate degree in theology is the last major hurdle to beginning their career. However, the time, cost, and logistics for earning a PhD in theology often limit the viability of that career.

Numerous schools have begun making their doctorate theology programs available mostly or completely online. A list of such programs is featured at the end of this article. But is an online degree a good option for aspiring theology PhD students? How does it compare to a brick-and-mortar degree?

What Is a PhD in Theology?

A PhD in theology is a terminal degree—the highest level of degree in its field. A PhD in theology qualifies someone to research theology professionally or teach in the upper levels of theology education. Its purposes are academic, with less application for pastors and others in “hands-on” ministry.

A PhD in theology typically takes four or more years to complete, but some online programs (such as Columbia International University or Liberty University ) can take as short as three years.

Still, “short” does not mean “easy.” PhD admissions, online or otherwise, are highly competitive. Applicants will need a graduate degree, a high GPA, professional references, writing samples, research language proficiencies, and potentially high GRE exam scores. Again, a doctorate is the highest level of theology degree. Applicants must prove they are prepared to earn it.

ThD (Doctor of Theology) vs. PhD in Theology

When comparing theology doctorate programs, aspiring students may notice some are labeled ThDs and others PhDs. Does the difference matter?

A Doctor of Theology (ThD) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Theology are very similar. Both are equal in rank, the highest level of degree one can earn in theology. However, a ThD and a PhD in theology have different emphases.

A ThD is typically offered by Christian institutions and focuses on a Christian understanding of theology. Some priority subjects of a ThD degree may include

  • Biblical Languages (Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic)
  • Hermeneutics
  • Church History

Many PhDs are similar, but some theology PhDs are offered by secular institutions. In such a context, programs often take a more general approach.

While a PhD in theology student may specialize in Christianity, they may also specialize in Islam, Hinduism, or another religion. PhD programs are often built on a broader study and cross-comparison of religions with less focus on a single belief system.

Despite these different emphases, though, ThD and PhD programs do overlap, and both equip students for careers as researchers or educators of theology. The particular school one attends has a far larger impact on one’s studies than whether the degree is a ThD and a PhD.

How Online PhD in Theology Programs Work

The content, delivery, timeline, and costs of an online PhD in theology can each make or break a student’s experience. Here are several factors to consider when comparing different PhD in theology programs.

European vs. American Style Programs

Some online PhD in theology programs have minimal coursework and instead focus on individualized research and one-on-one mentoring with an advisor. European-style online PhD in theology programs, such as Trinity Bible College’s Practical Theology PhD , often fit this format.

European-style PhD programs are typically shorter, and PhD applicants choose their research project before starting their PhD.

American PhD programs, in contrast, often include more coursework with 1–2 years spent in thesis development and research approach. Faulkner University’s PhD in Biblical Studies program fits this format.

Students who already have a thorough knowledge base and thesis in mind may find a European-style program more focused and efficient. Students hungry for further training (such as advanced hermeneutics) and in need of additional time for refining their thesis with their adviser may find an American-style program offers a more gradual and thorough approach.

Normally, students are somewhat limited by location when choosing between American- vs. European-style PhD programs. Through the accessibility of online learning, however, students can choose the approach that fits their needs.

Program Structure and Online Delivery

Lecture-based courses are less numerous at the PhD level, but are still a typical feature of online PhD in theology programs. Classes may include subjects such as Advanced Hermeneutics , Ecclesiology , and Teaching Methods .

Online PhD programs often rely on recorded lectures or videos instead of scheduled class times. While interaction with classmates is more limited online, discussion boards and forums enable students to bounce ideas off one another.

One-on-one interaction with faculty is a priority at the PhD level, even with online limitations. Each PhD student consults one-on-one with an advisor, and other faculty may also be available for conversation.

At the end of the program, students are required to orally defend their PhD thesis in front of an academic board. For some online programs, this requires traveling to the physical campus; for others, this may take place virtually.

Online PhD in theology programs tend to be more streamlined than brick-and-mortar programs, so it’s common for students to finish within only three or four years. However, online programs sacrifice some of the opportunities offered by brick-and-mortar programs. For example, PhD students pursuing a teaching career will have a much harder time finding student teaching opportunities in an online PhD program.

Types of Doctorate Theology Programs Offered Online

No PhD in theology student will study exactly the same content as another. PhD programs move beyond general subject knowledge into deeper (and more niche) research, and each student pursues original research for their thesis. Picking a program where the classes and faculty match well with one’s thesis makes all the difference.

A program in Biblical Studies is an excellent fit for someone pursuing a biblical interpretation-related thesis. Many programs specialize in denomination-related studies, including Catholic and Greek Orthodox theology. For PhD theology students interested in researching the interplay between theology and different cultural contexts, a World Christian Studies degree is another option. Students more focused on ministry application might consider a Practical Theology degree.

The name of a program alone is not a thorough indicator of the subjects it may cover. For instance, Columbia International University’s Theological Studies PhD is not limited to systematic and historical theology. Their program is equally at home in the fields of apologetics and theological ethics.

These examples are by no means exhaustive. Aspiring PhD students should take time to consider their options and how each program connects with their research and career goals.

Online Theology PhD Costs

Online PhD programs can be significantly more affordable than most brick-and-mortar programs.

For instance, Liberty University’s online PhD in Practical Theology offers ablock rate of $2,750 per semesterto students who take 7–15 credit hours, with a three-year pace for graduation. Some online programs (such as at Liberty and Columbia International ) even include textbooks free of charge. In contrast, the average cost of a PhD degree is $96,800 .

With that said, it would be a mistake to measure a PhD program by its sticker price. Grants, fellowships, and stipends are some of the most notable ways PhD students cover the cost of their education.

Such opportunities are more diverse in brick-and-mortar institutions. For instance, online programs typically can’t provide teaching stipends. Brick-and-mortar institutions often have more funding, too. Some brick-and-mortar PhD in theology programs, such as Wheaton College’s , are fully funded (tuition is free to successful applicants).

Still, brick-and-mortar programs come with additional costs. Such programs may require relocation, travel, or sacrificing schedule flexibility. And while an online PhD student may not have a teaching stipend, they can often take on part-time work without worrying about class time hours.

Overall, online programs are a more reliable way to earn an affordable PhD. Aspiring PhD students, though, should take time to cross-compare individual programs, rather than rely on generalities.

Is an Online Doctorate in Theology Worth It?

A PhD in theology can be a game changer for anyone pursuing a career in research or higher education. And online degrees are one of the most affordable and convenient ways of earning that degree. However, determining whether an online theology degree is “worth it” depends very much on the specific student and program. Different students have different needs, ambitions, and life situations. There is no one size fits all.

An online format most often lends itself to students pursuing research, rather than those pursuing a career in teaching (though program content is a large factor as well). Furthermore, a student with a family or other responsibilities may find an online program is the best way to juggle their priorities. For many students, the shorter timeline and lower costs of an online program might be the tipping point that makes a PhD attainable. A quality online program may provide better content than a given brick-and-mortar program—format isn’t the only factor.

On the other hand, in-person interactions are far better for building relationships and networking. A high-achieving student may receive acceptance into a fully-funded brick-and-mortar program, eliminating online schooling’s chief advantage. Brick-and-mortar PhD in theology programs are far more common than online, so students have a wider range of programs to choose from.

As online learning becomes more and more popular, credible schools are building quality online programs. An online PhD in theology from an accredited school is a legitimate option for anyone pursuing a career in theology academia.

  • Function responsibly in the context of a supervisory relationship while exhibiting CIU’s core value of victorious Christian living.

Achievement of these objectives will be evaluated through the production and defense of the student’s original work of academic research (90,000-110,000 words), which will be directed by a faculty specialist in the student’s chosen field of study. Students may focus their research in any of the areas of practical theology.

The Practical Theology concentration encompasses the broad areas of chaplaincy, homiletics, pastoral theology, and moral theology. Students who pursue this concentration may choose to focus their research in any of these areas. Their objective is to make an original and significant contribution to their area of study and, as a result, contribute to the understanding of a theologically-informed biblical worldview. During their first years, students also complete a proficiency exam in one theological research language related to their dissertation topic.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the general graduate application requirements of the University (see the Admissions section for details), applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Online application
  • Application Fee
  • Affirm to be a Christian and agree with CIU’s Statement of Faith
  • A minimum 3.5 GPA for all graduate work.
  • Proficiency in graduate-level theological studies, demonstrated by completion of an accredited Master of Arts (MA), Master of Divinity (MDiv), or Master of Theology (ThM) degree.

  • Master’s thesis or major research paper, approximately 5,000-6,000 words (20-24 pages)
  • Preliminary research proposal (approximately 500 words)

Residency and Transfer Policies

The program is non-residential, and students are not required to study in residence. The initial three seminars are delivered online, and the dissertation process is an independent research and writing experience with a specialist in the student’s field of study. A student may transfer in up to 6 hours, if he/she can demonstrate completion of the equivalent of PTH 9200 Issues and Methods and/or PTH 9400 Principles of Teaching, Learning, and Course Design.

Time Limitation

The time limit for completing the program is ten years, dating from the student’s first seminar and concluding with dissertation defense and graduation. The program is designed so that students who pursue their research and writing at a six-credit-per-semester pace should be able to complete their degree in three years. If a student who is studying at that pace does not defend the dissertation by the end of the third year, the student will pay a continuation fee for each semester he/she remains in the program. Students who pursue their research and writing at a three-credit-per-semester pace should be able to complete their degree in five years. If a student who is studying at that pace does not defend the dissertation by the end of the fifth year, the student will pay a continuation fee for each semester he/she remains in the program.

  • Successful completion of proficiency examinations in a concentration-specific theological research language as noted below.*
  • Successful completion of a dissertation proposal prepared under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive knowledge review under the supervision of a faculty mentor.**

Research profile

The research interests of academic staff and graduate students in Ethics and Practical Theology encompass a range of theoretical and practical approaches to ethics, religion and theology, including:

  • environmental ethics
  • peace-building and reconciliation
  • ethical theory
  • pastoral and practical theology

Research supervisor

You can find out more and identify a potential supervisor by looking at the School of Divinity’s staff profiles, which give details of research interests and publications, and email addresses.

Staff Profiles

You are encouraged to contact a potential supervisor to discuss your research project before making a formal application.

In the Ethics and Practical Theology research area, projects are often interdisciplinary. If this is the case, you may be jointly supervised with a subject specialist from another School in the University.

Research community

At the School of Divinity you will join a community of around 150 research students, drawn from around the world, and from a variety of religious and non-religious backgrounds.

Research reputation

You will study in a stimulating environment. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 ranked the School first in Scotland and fifth in the UK for its research power in theology and religious studies. The majority of the research activity of our colleagues is classed as world-leading, reflecting the vibrancy of the School's research culture.

Training and support

The ethos of the Graduate School is to promote excellence in postgraduate study, within a stimulating and supportive environment.

We value equality and diversity in the School community, and an academic culture that is both critical and constructive.

At the start of the academic year, you will be invited to Welcome Week, an intensive introduction to study and life in Edinburgh. Some events are especially for international students new to Scotland and the UK, but everything is open to all.

In the first weeks, the School provides a general orientation to research skills and to wider opportunities for training and support.

From your first days as a PhD or MPhil student, you will work 1:1 with your primary research supervisor.

Your progress will be tracked, through regular supervisions and milestone reviews, to ensure that you get the support you need to bring your project to fruition.

You will be part of the research seminar in Theology and Ethics, to which visiting speakers are invited and to which postgraduates present work-in-progress.

You can also engage with the work of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues:

Centre for Theology and Public Issues

You will be able to follow taught courses that contribute to your interests and research needs, and can also take advantage of opportunities to learn ancient and modern languages.

If you are a PhD student, after successful completion of your first year, you will be eligible to apply for tutoring opportunities, to gain teaching experience.

A University review (2015) commended the Graduate School for providing excellent support:

  • responsive to student feedback
  • proactive in helping new postgraduates to adjust to their studies and to life in Scotland
  • enthusiastic and practical in promoting career development

The postgraduate student committee works closely with the School to make the research student experience the best it can be.

The School of Divinity, one of the largest centres for the study of religion in the United Kingdom, is located in the historic setting of New College, close to Edinburgh Castle and overlooking Princes Street.

Resources for research are excellent. You can draw on the outstanding holdings of:

  • New College Library
  • University of Edinburgh main library
  • National Library of Scotland

New College Library has one of the largest theology collections in the UK, with more than a quarter of a million items and a large and rich manuscript collection.

The University library exceeds 2.25 million volumes.

The National Library of Scotland – a ‘legal deposit’ library like the British Library in London and the university libraries of Oxford and Cambridge – is just around the corner.

Research seminars and events

The School provides an extensive programme of weekly research seminars and special guest lectures. In addition, three research centres provide a special focus for activity:

  • the Centre for the Study of Christian Origins
  • the Centre for Theology and Public Issues
  • the Centre for the Study of World Christianity

Study facilities

You will have access to excellent study facilities, dedicated to postgraduates. PhD and MPhil students have access 24/7, and can request an allocated desk. Masters by Research students have shared study space.

All areas have printing/scanning and computer facilities. The main postgraduate study wing has a kitchen. New College has an on-site cafe that is open during term time.

Research opportunities

You can choose from two research programmes: the MPhil programme or PhD. Each takes a different amount of time: the MPhil takes two years; a PhD takes at least three.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Studying for an MPhil commits you to at least two years’ full-time study and to writing a thesis of up to 50,000 words. You will have regular 1:1 supervision and work with advice from two supervisors. During the first year you explore your chosen area of research and refine your research proposal.

At around the nine-month mark, you will submit a draft chapter for discussion at a Review Board, together with a developed proposal for the whole thesis.

On the basis of your progress to date, and the prospects for your research, the Review Board will make recommendations on the continuation of your studies into the second year.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Research for a PhD will require you to undertake at least three years’ full-time study, and to write a thesis of up to 100,000 words.

You will have regular 1:1 supervision and work with advice from two supervisors.

For admission to the PhD programme, you will need to show a proven ability to sustain independent research under supervision, normally in the form of a masters programme that includes a dissertation.

From the beginning, the British pattern of PhD studies focuses on working towards the thesis – there is little or no coursework. This means that from the start you need to be well-prepared in any special skills you need for your research project, including languages.

You will also need to be competent in academic writing in English.
