The canteen in my school provides students, teachers and other staff with delicious food and drink in hygienic condition. I know that instead of buying things from roadside sellers, it is safe to eat canteen food. Roadside food can spoil our health. I am lucky to have such a good canteen in my school.

Teachers and other staff members are served by canteen boys in trays. They are served with some light refreshments, tea , coffee , soft drinks, etc. They eat it in their office and staffroom during lunch and short breaks. Even they enjoy canteen food wholehearted.

Many find our school canteen as a great advantage to both pupils and staff. However, a few PTA members do not think so. They think that school encourages students to spend money on eating outside food.

Our Principal Mrs. Karbhari is a truthful and straightforward woman. She always likes to put good new ideas into practice. Last month one of the parents in a PTA meeting suggested that there were good chances of improving the services provided by the school canteen. Since then many positive changes have been brought to the canteen.

The quality of the food has improved. It is served fresh and clean. Food is tastier than ever before. Special utensils are used to store food. The variety of food has increased. Most importantly, it is available at many affordable rates.

My school canteen is run by a staff of people who are well trained and dedicated to preparing food that suits best to the children. On every Thursday, each child gets a free banana from the canteen. Bottles of mineral water are also sold here. Most of the South Indian dishes and dry snacks are available in the canteen. I love to have mendu wada sambhar and plain dosa.

During recess, there is a great rush. However, students show discipline and are well-mannered. Specially appointed students from senior classes help in maintaining discipline in the canteen. There are few benches in the canteen where at least fifty to sixty students can sit at a time to have their lunch. Everything runs smoothly during recess.

Sometimes even teachers and other staff members are seen visiting the school canteen. They sit to have their tea, coffee, or some light snacks. Thus, for me canteen in my school must not be considered as a treat but a need because it fills our empty bellies and helps us in making our minds work during studies.

Set 1: Essay On My School Canteen

I study in Cambridge School which is one of the best schools of Mumbai. It has a stone building. It has all the facilities a good school should have well-furnished classrooms, laboratories, library and playgrounds.

As we enter the school, there is a playground to our left and a small garden to our right. When we enter the building, the principal’s room and the office room are to the left and the staff room to the right side. These are well-furnished. There are thirty-four classrooms. Our laboratories are well-equipped. Our library has books on almost all the subjects. Our librarian is also very nice and helps us choose good books.

Our school, like all schools, has a prescribed uniform. We have to wear white or cream cotton shirts, light blue trousers, black shoes and white socks. Girls have to wear white blouses and light-blue skirts in primary and middle classes and white shirts and light-grey skirts in higher classes. They have to tie their long hair with white ribbons.

In our school special attention is paid to behaviour, cleanliness and punctuality. The most well-behaved, neat and punctual student is awarded a prize at the Annual Day function.

Our principal is a strict disciplinarian. He takes the help of P.T. teachers too. If any student violates the rules, is not in uniform, or makes mischief, gets punished. But he is fair and loving. He tries to find out the reason and guides us.

Our teachers are also quite strict. They teach us with great care, check our notebooks and help us with our problems. But if we are inattentive and don’t work properly, we are punished.

I like my school very much and am proud that I belong to it.

Keeping Your School Canteen Safe and Clean

Maintaining a hygienic and safe School canteens requires a systematic approach including set procedures and scheduled cleaning. The School canteen is a busy environment where the pace can be frenetic but it is important that the ‘busyness’ does not overtake the cleaning regime and the cleaning of  School canteen equipment.

  Staff Hygiene

Apart from basic personal hygiene such as regularly washing hands, canteen staff should take care in the preparation and handling of food. It is important to wear gloves as far as possible, to have hair tied back and covered, and to avoid touching unnecessary equipment while handling food. A washbasin with warm water and soap should be located within easy distance of where staff work. Wounds such as cuts need to be securely covered to ensure that there is no contamination either way.

  Insect Control

The first step in controlling insects and other vermin is to ensure that School canteen is kept clean, benches are wiped down, and that food rubbish is covered and disposed of as quickly as practical. Food which is dropped behind equipment or furniture may be difficult to see but it is necessary to check these places daily. There are those insects which you encounter on a daily basis such as flies –these can be controlled by fly traps or similar mechanisms. Similarly cockroaches can be trapped as can mice. Such traps need to be checked and renewed according to a regular schedule. School canteen equipment  should be tagged and tested regularly depending on its use, but all equipment needs to be tested at least annually. Stoves and fridges use a lot of power – do not increase the power load on the circuits by using power boards to plug in multiple appliances. Ensure that power leads are not dragging across the floor or benches. This can cause injury and appliances to be pulled onto the floor. Replace fraying or worn leads, and be particularly aware of the conductive powers of water. If there is a liquid spillage move electrical leads and equipment out of range.

  Equipment Control and Maintenance

The main problem with fridges and freezers is that the temperature decreases with constant opening and closing of doors. Most commercial fridges come equipped with a thermometer which should be check at least 3 times a day and the temperature recorded. If the temperature inside the unit increases to an unsafe level, modify procedures to allow the temperature to stay at a sufficiently low level. Food (apart from fruit and vegetables) kept in fridges needs to have use by dates – check these each time you take something from the fridge to use.

 It is recommended that commercial stoves ovens and hoods are professionally cleaned at least once per year. In the range hood grease builds up, and the filter becomes less effective in the process. Depending on the amount of use the stoves and ovens have, it is recommended to clean the hood vents and filter at least once per term.  The filter needs to be soaked in a suitable detergent and then scrubbed to remove grease. Filters need to be replaced from time to time. Stove tops need to be cleaned after use.

  And Finally

It is a good idea to hire  professional kitchen cleaners  for large equipment at least annually – they have processes, knowledge and equipment not available to most School Canteens. School cleaners will clean your canteen on a daily basis. Canteen staff have the responsibility of checking that the cleaning is of a satisfactory standard. It is a good idea to sanitise benches and equipment at the end of the day by using very hot water or a chemical sanitiser – if using the latter it needs to be washed off after the required period.

Canteen Service Quality And Student Satisfaction

The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between canteen service quality and student satisfaction at Mintal Comprehensive High School, Mintal, Tugbok, Davao City, Philippines. The research used a non-experimental descriptive correlational research with a total of 200 Grade 11 respondents who were randomly selected. The statistical tools used were the mean, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation (Pearson r) and regression analysis. The indicators of canteen service quality were tangibility, assurance, reliability, responsiveness, and empathy. Student satisfaction was based on the canteen ambiance, cleanliness, facilities, features, and prices. The findings revealed that canteen service quality as perceived by the students is moderately satisfactory and the student satisfaction was moderate. Further, canteen service quality is associated with student satisfaction wherein tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, and empathy showed strong positive correlation. Besides, tangibility, responsiveness, and empathy were the domains of canteen service quality that contribute significantly to student satisfaction. Hence, the school canteen managers are encouraged to improve their service quality provided to students based on the three predictors of student satisfaction.

This study aimed to determine the students' satisfaction on the school canteen operation of Pililla National High School during School Year 2022-2023. The researcher used stratified technique-a probability sampling procedure in which each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected, providing a representative sample that accurately reflects the characteristics of the population being studied. The respondents of the study were 279 Junior High School students and were chosen using stratified sampling technique. This study utilized the mix method of research in which the researcher combines the elements of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study used the researchers made questionnaire, which includes the data about profile such gender and socioeconomic status as Part I, the level of satisfaction of junior high school students on school canteen operation in Part II and the typical experiences that influence the level of satisfaction of students in the school canteen operations in Part III. The researcher utilized different data gathering techniques such as questionnaire checklist (hard copy and online) and survey form in order to the conduct of this capstone project and will employ different analytical tools to help and justify the conduct of the study. It was discovered that female respondents' outnumbered male and majority of the students belong to socioeconomic status of less than 10, 000, while on the level of satisfaction on school canteen operations, it was found out that cleanliness of the school canteen obtained the highest computed mean and has been identified with the most consistent response among the respondents as revealed by the standard deviation., however, it was also revealed that there is no significant difference in the students' satisfaction on school canteen operations when assessed by the respondents categorized in terms of gender except for the area on nutritional value (p<0.05), and there is no significant difference in the students' satisfaction on school canteen operations based on socioeconomic status reflective of the sig. values all greater than α = 0.05. On the qualitative data, the researchers found out that the experiences that influence student satisfaction in school canteen operations can be complex and multifaceted, and may vary depending on factors such as student demographics, cultural backgrounds, and personal preferences. It is important for canteen operators to take these factors into account when designing and implementing strategies to improve student satisfaction and promote healthy eating habits.

The Canteen of university is an important guarantee for the smooth development of teaching and scientific research. It concerns the immediate interests of students and the harmony and stability of universities and society. It has attracted widespread attention from all sides. This paper takes the canteen of Jiangsu University as an example, uses the data obtained from the questionnaire survey, and uses SPSS22.0 software to perform descriptive statistical analysis, factor analysis and regression analysis to evaluate the student's satisfaction with the canteen. This study investigates the link between the different service characteristics that have an influence on customer satisfaction in university cafeteria food services. A conceptual model comprising of different variables like food and beverage quality, service quality, food choice, price and value equality, and ambience were studied for customer satisfaction to explore the relationship among them. This study examined how dining experiences influence the satisfaction and loyalty of both non-mature (students) and mature (staff) customers, in order to find their similarities and differences within the context of university cafeteria services. The study was conducted at Taylor's University in Malaysia by using a quantitative research approach, and 231 students and 63 staff members of the university participated in the study. The findings reveal that the various quality factors considered in the study are positively correlated with customer satisfaction and have a significant impact on the satisfaction level of both students and staff who dined at the university cafeteria. It could be concluded from the results that the influence of price offered at the university cafeteria had a significant effect on respondents' loyalty. The result of this study offers a direction towards better the services and facilities, which lead to an increase of the competitive influence of the restaurant business in the marketplace.

Dear Editor,

It is known that dietary behaviors in childhood track into adulthood and are predictive of future chronic disease [ 1-3 ]. For this reason, the WHO recommends the implementation of food and beverage policies as a strategy to improve the nutrition of children [ 4 , 5 ]. Children usually spend many hours at school each day, including lunchtime, so the school environment could be considered an important out of home setting where children consume at least one main meal a day. Given the influence that the environment can exert on students’ food choices, it is crucial to create a healthy food environment in schools that facilitates students to choose healthy food products. In this way, students are enabled to develop healthy eating habits from which they can benefit the rest of their lives [ 6-8 ].

The foods offered in school canteens have an increasingly important role to ensure that children could have a consistent opportunity to choose healthy foods [ 9 ].

In Italy several children bring their lunch from home, but the majority of schools (especially primary, and middle schools) have a canteen; this phenomenon is also described in other parts of the world [ 10 ].

The project called Un fiore in mensa ( A flower in canteen ) was conceived by ATS (Agenzia di Tutela della Salute - Health Protection Agency) Val Padana as an acknowledgment given to the quality of the school catering service that could contribute to:

• improve the quality level of school catering service;
• stimulate teachers to live the meal at school as an educational moment;
• actively involve children by educating them in a healthy and correct diet;
• achieve children’s autonomy;
• stimulate local administrators, or private managers to achieve a common goal which is the psycho-physical well-being of children.

The aim of the project is to assign an award – The Flower – on the basis of the evidences emerged from an inspection. The inspection should be performed at school (without any notice) by health personnel during lunch. Each room, tackle and food should be examined as well as the entire lunch (from preparation of meal to the consumption).

In particular the health personnel should evaluate:

• quality of the menu;
• organization and cleaning of the kitchen and/or other locals;
• collaboration of the teachers;
• general presentation of the refectory (cleanliness, brightness, furnishings, tables…);
• collaboration between all the personnel during lunch;
• children’s behavior.

During the inspections, the health personnel should use a questionnaire divided in 6 sections (see Appendix ), assigning different scores for each item (max 10 points for each section).

It is necessary to reach at least 30 points to have the “flower”, but these points should be achieved in 3 essential sections (and therefore “petals”):

• collaboration of the teachers.

The complete flower (with 6 petals) could be reached with 60 points (corresponding to 4 - general presentation of the refectory; 5 - collaboration between all the personnel during lunch; 6 - children’s behavior).

At the end of the inspection, a brief report should be written and sent to the local administrators (e.g. mayors) or private managers involved in school catering.

In the first edition of the project (school year 2014-2015) 17 on 28 schools (60.7%) obtained the flower.

In particular: one school obtained a 3-petals certificate; 5 schools obtained a four-petals certificate (4 obtained the petal 4, 1 obtained the petal 5); four schools obtained a five-petals certificate(2 obtained the petals 4 and 5, 1 the petals 4 and the 6 and 1 obtained the petals 5 and 6); seven schools met all the requirements and obtained the complete six petals certificate.

Among the 17 schools that obtained the flower, nine were kindergartens and eight elementary schools. Moreover, five had an internal kitchen and twelve the refectory only.

81.8% (9 out of 11) kindergartens and only 47% (8 out of 17) of elementary schools obtained the flower. 83.3% (5 out of 6) of schools with internal kitchens and only 54.5% (12 of 22) of schools with the refectory obtained the flower.

It is pivotal to say that these results are limited to the schools sited in the territory of ATS Val Padana (situated in Northern Italy) and certainly studies on larger areas, involving a greater number of schools could confirm or deny what we observed.

However, in our experience, we observed in the schools with an internal kitchen several problems: the locker rooms and the toilets dedicated to the canteen personnel were often unsuitable (dirty, or with lockers insufficient for all the workers); in the pantry we often found unsuitable foods such as wine, non iodized alt, bouillon cubes, snacks, precooked foods. In some cases we found a poor collaboration of the teachers.

The better results reported by the kindergartens could be partially explained by their general management: they were often small schools, with a limited number of children and the most of them had a private management.

In the first edition of the project we observed, during the year, a progressive improvement in canteens quality and a progressive growth in the awareness about the project. Some schools that have not received the full flower contacted us to try to resolve some critical aspects and this is certainly an important confirmation of the utility of the project that we encourage to use also in other realities.

Eighty-eight per cent of students reportedly became distracted by moderate inattention to cleanliness in their learning environment. Simple things like unswept floors, the buildup of dirt in corners, and smudge marks on surfaces were distracting. So, what level of cleanliness do students prefer? Eighty-four per cent in the study sample preferred what the researchers called Orderly Spotlessness.

The floors were shining clean, all surfaces were smudge and dust-free, and trash cans contained only waste from that day. While this study was conducted on college students, it is safe to assume that younger students will also learn better in a clean environment.

Fewer Absences and Sick Days
