About Postgraduate Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and human behaviour. It is a highly versatile field and psychologists explore a diversity of topics, including cognitive processes, emotional regulation, behaviour, neuroscience and social interactions, using research methods and empirical evidence. In England, achieving a doctoral degree in psychology represents the pinnacle of academic study in the field and indicates a practical qualification which is geared toward applying research to specific professional settings.

To gain a place on a doctoral course in psychology in England, you’ll usually be required to hold a relevant master's degree in psychology or a related field, along with a strong research background. Fortunately, psychology is a popular course at this level, and there are over 150 courses at more than 60 institutions in England alone, so you’ll find many options of places to study.

What to expect

As a doctoral student, you can expect an intellectually rigorous and research-intensive experience. You’ll be researching a fairly specialised topic within the field of psychology, and this is likely something which you began to focus on at master’s level. It can form the basis for a career pathway once you begin to work professionally, and research topics often include things like clinical psychology, cognitive neuroscience and organisational psychology.

  • Admissions Statistics . King's College London. October 2022.
  • FOI Request by Matthew Wall. October 2019.

The acceptance rate , or offer rate, represents the fraction of applicants who received an offer. Note that this will be generally lower the acceptances rates (acceptances divided by applicants) published by many other sources. This article explains it in more detail. The acceptances generally indicate the number of offer holders who accepted the offer and fulfilled its conditions. For some universities, however, it denotes the number of applicants who accepted the offer, regardless of whether they subsequently met its conditions.

Data Reliability

Unless otherwise noted, the data presented comes from the universities and is generally reliable. However, some of the differences between years and/or courses may be due to different counting methodologies or data gathering errors. This may especially be the case if there is a sharp difference from year to year. If the data does not look right, click the "Report" button located near the top of the page.

Consistent with its history, tradition and mission statement King's College has designed its graduate programs to prepare and develop professionals for business, industry, government, health care and education who possess the desire, skills, and education to accept management responsibilities and creative leadership positions in regional, national and international organizations. King's College also seeks to offer high-quality education in specialized fields of study which not only enhance the student's technical background but also maintain a balance between the qualitative and quantitative methods, and the technical and socio-economic approaches to current issues.

Graduate Honor Society

The King’s College Graduate school is a member of Alpha Epsilon Lambda (AEL), a national honor society founded in 1990 by former officers of the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students.  Before AEL, no honor society was devoted exclusively to recognizing graduate students.  The mission of Alpha Epsilon Lambda is to promote intellectual achievement, leadership, and ethics among graduate students.

The King’s College Alpha Epsilon Chapter of AEL was established in 1999.  To be invited to apply for membership, graduate students must have completed a specific number of credits in their graduate program and place in the top 35% of that graduate program academically (GPA). Admission to membership is based on the student applicant’s record of leadership, scholarship, research and service activities.  Admission to membership is decided by the Graduate Policy Committee.

School Psychology PhD Program of Study

Doctoral program course sequence.

Program Handbook (PDF)

Students in our APA-accredited PhD program complete a minimum of 117 graduate credits. Students who enter the program directly from the baccalaureate degree earn a master's of education (M.Ed.) in education en route to completing the doctoral program requirements. Students who enter the program with previously earned graduate credits may apply up to 12 of those credits toward the doctoral plan of study. Students are not required to retake courses that apply to the doctoral plan of study in school psychology; rather, courses and credits in excess of the 12 that are transferred in are waived from the doctoral plan of study and replacement courses are selected in areas mutually agreed upon by the student and advisor. In these instances, students often elect to take additional course work in areas of psychology and neuroscience, and measurement and statistics. Typically, students are awarded their PhD degree after 5 or 6 years of graduate work – 3 or 4 years of coursework (including practicum requirements), 1-year full-time doctoral internship, and dissertation work (which usually bridges the 4 years on campus and the year of internship).
