Oniyede Azeez, professionally known as Zinoleesky, was born in the Agege local government area of Lagos, on November 21, 1999. He was born into the Muslim family of Mr. and Mrs. Azeez. He attended Lively Kiddies Nursery and Primary School for his elementary education where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC). Musical Career of Zinoleesky

As a teenager growing up in Agege local government area of Lagos, Zinoleesky enjoyed listening to Afrobeats, Highlife, Pop, Juju, and Fuji sounds. This fostered his interest to make music, which he began with freestyling rap songs in front of his classmates as a secondary school student. Most of the videos he posted on his Instagram page showed him rapping to instrumentals of popular songs or doing covers of trendy Afrobeats singles at the time. As he consistently posted videos of freestyle and covers of songs on his Instagram page so did his online audience began to grow. In 2017, his freestyle rap videos went viral and generated massive engagements which pushed him to the limelight.

Zinoleesky and Lil Frosh, another talented Instagram sensation at the time, recorded and posted multiple videos that showed them freestyling to Afrobeats on their respective Instagram accounts. H ailing from Nigeria, the current epicentre of Afrobeats and Afropop, Zinoleesky ’s sound is already going global. ‘Personal’, the trap-infused lead single from his December EP ‘Grit & Lust’, recently charted in the Top 10 of the UK’s Afrobeats Chart while also nestling in the Top 15 of the equivalent US chart. Such early success, you feel, is only just the beginning.

By choosing not to align with the avant-garde nature of the country’s alté scene, which has seen the likes of Cruel Santino and TeeZee blur what typically is and isn’t Afrobeats, Zinoleesky’s music instead serves as a true celebration of the African continent’s current multitude of pop sounds. It notably pulls elements from Tanzania’s bongo flava and South Africa’s Afro-House and Amapiano , creating an infectious and original take on Afrobeats that has no doubt helped fuel his rise.

Ahead of his headline UK tour in March, NME caught up with Zinoleesky to talk about the success of ‘Grit & Lust’, pioneering Nigerian street pop and enhancing his “star power”.

NME : Your single ‘Personal’ has charted on both the UK and US’ Afrobeats charts. How does it feel to be recognised on such an international level?

“It feels good, because it’s my first time [charting] and it feels nice to be recognised globally. It’s one of my goals that I’m still working towards: I’m working, struggling [and] trying to be global. I played some shows in the UK last year [including selling out London’s Scala], and I’ve done some shows in some other countries as well. My next tour will be different because it’ll be an actual tour, so I can’t wait for the experience.”

What was the process of making ‘Grit N Lust’ like?

“I’d already dropped an EP [2020’s ‘Chrome’], and I feel like ‘Grit & Lust’ is completely different. From the artists to the recording, the experience was something out of my league and was just crazy. It was a good time and I’m very proud. Before I was making songs with [fellow Afrobeats newcomers] Omah Lay and Ayra [Starr] , I wasn’t really used to working with other people — it wasn’t my kind of vibe. But ‘Last Time’ with Lay was magic because he’s actually very, very talented: he can record a whole song in one go. Seeing stuff like that is actually nice, and I feel like it’s made me want to work with people more.”

Along with Omar Lay and Ayra Starr, you’re part of a talented generation of Nigerian pop stars. Do you feel proud to be in such esteemed company?

“I feel blessed because if you look at everybody, every artist out there right now is killing it… I feel like whatever I do stands for who I am, my songs stand for where I’m from, my language, everything. So I feel like we do everything for [Nigeria] and show them our sound, and it’s just all working well together.”

You began your career with a series of viral freestyles that you posted online. When you look back, how do you feel about your early work?

“I just decided to start doing my own videos, and they started to go viral. [When the first one blew up] I was still in the hood, and people were posting my videos everywhere. I can’t even explain how mad it was. I remember we were just in the street and then people would just walk past like, ‘Look! It’s that boy!’. It made me believe in myself, though, and [the videos] gave me more confidence. I knew I could make it.”

You’re considered to be a pioneer of Nigerian street pop. How would you define this sound?

“Based on where I was coming from, and the fact that the sound of the music I was making wasn’t [fitting into any of the established scenes], I feel like I can be considered a pioneer of Nigerian street pop. [Street pop] is originally Afrobeats, but it comes from the streets. The use of hip-hop and other genres [with Afrobeats] is what makes street pop so unique.”

What are the key influences of your street pop sound?

“For the Amapiano sound in my music, it was more so [his go-to producer Niphkeys] because I never imagined I’d be making Amapiano. I just wanted to record a song that day and he played the beat for [one of Zinoleesky’s breakthrough hits] ‘Kilofeshe’. I liked it, and it became a hit. After that, though, I still never requested Amapiano. If I do, it’s because I liked the beat or my fans want another one. I never set out to make that sound. Earlier in my career, I was heavily influenced by Kizz Daniel: I could really connect with him and his songs back then. I feel I figured out my sound because of him, Mayorkun and people like that.”

You’re signed to Naira Marley’s record label, Marlian Music. How is that relationship working out?

“Since I signed to Marlian Music, it’s like I’m a part of a big family. There’s not one big leader. Everyone is just working together and it’s like working with my brothers, you know? I see [Marley] as a mentor, definitely — even outside of music. After turning down a deal with Davido ’s label [Davido Music Worldwide], I was getting a lot of offers and I felt like I had to calm down and figure out what was good for me. It didn’t feel right, so I stayed independent. I learned that there was a lot more to music than just dropping songs, like the promo aspects and the life around it. There’s more to music than music itself.”

What’s next for you?

“[In terms of] my goals, I want to do a lot of things — but they’re all depending on my level of comfortability and my star power. I can’t wait to headline some more shows, and I think I’m going to start working on my album because I want to drop more [music] this year. I’m not aiming to make any type of sound: I just want to do whatever comes naturally.”

The Singer Has Never Been to the University

Zinoleesky is one of the few Nigerian artists who, through their breakthroughs, continue to prove to the world that talents are not only learned in institutions of higher learning but can as well be possessed right from birth. While growing up, he attended Lively Kids nursery and primary school, Agege, Lagos.

Zinoleesky Rejected Davido’s Offer to Join His DMW Record Label

In 2019, when the three rising stars began to gain massive attention in the music industry, famous Nigerian musician Davido offered them a deal to join his record label. Still, Zinoleesky turned down the offer while his friends Lil Frosh and Ibradosky accepted. He was criticized and attacked for being the first upcoming artist to reject the same offer from Davido.

However, Zinoleesky disclosed his reason for rejecting the offer after signing to Naira Marley’s record label, Marlian Music, alongside three other upcoming artists, Fabian Blu, C Black, and Mohbad. He said that he felt he does not belong to the DMW but has now found where he belongs to. Though some still dragged him, many others applauded his guts and commended his firm stand of going for exactly what he wants.

Zinoleesky whose real name is Oniyide Azeez , was born on November 21, 1995, and raised in Lagos State but originally hails from Ogun State, Nigeria. He was born in the Mainland district of Lagos city and spent his formative years residing in Agege Local Government Area. He studied at Lively Kiddies Nursery and Primary School for his elementary school education. He obtained his First School Leaving Certificate from the institution.

He attended a government-owned Agege Boys Secondary School , Lagos, for his high school education and scored good grades in his Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), details concerning his post-secondary schooling are unknown at this time.

As a high school student, Zinoleesky actively made music. He was known for thrilling his classmates with freestyle rap songs. More so, he always performed at school events and competed in different talent shows in Lagos. He decided to pursue a professional music career after graduating from high school. He began visiting studios in his community to record songs he had written at home. In no time, he became a popular face in the Agege Music Community and was often invited to perform at events held in the city.

Apparently, Zinoleesky’s music career took off after Kizz Daniel followed him on Instagram only seconds after posting an Instagram video of one of his raps. Fortune finally smiled on Zinoleesky, and he began to receive collaboration requests from established acts. In 2019, he was offered a record deal by the DMW label , owned by Davido . However, he rejected the offer and chose to remain an independent artist for a while. Zinoleesky was eventually signed by Naira Marley into Marlian Music in January 2020, alongside the likes of Mohbad , Fabian and Cblack .

To foster the growth of his career, Zinoleesky began to record and post freestyle rap videos on social media. In most cases, he would rap to the instrumentals of popular songs or do the covers of trendy singles in the country. Gradually, he was able to build an audience on social media, as many lovers of Afrobeat and Street Pop sounds appreciated his works. As the weeks advanced, Zinoleesky became a force to reckon with in the underground rap community, as most of his rap videos were going viral and generating massive engagement on the social media app – Instagram. The young Agege artiste had grown a large fanbase in a short while.

Zinoleesky, who came from a middle-class family, now resides in a posh apartment house in Lekki and owns two exotic cars.

Zinoleesky is rumoured to be in a relationship with Shubomi Fashola , Naira Marley‘s sister. The duo were seen kissing in a video that surfaced online some months back.

Rumours were flying all over the internet that Zinoleesky and Lil Frosh were called up for a record label deal by AMW and DMW, AMW owned by Davido’s Personal Assistant (PA), Aloma , and DMW owned by Davido himself. The two talented musical artists Lil Frosh and Zinoleesky were called up for a million naira record label deal. We gathered that Lil Frosh accepted the deal and immediately signed the papers, which was followed up with Davido and Aloma announcing him on their Instagram pages as their newly signed artist.

Zinoleesky was born on 21 November, 1995 to Mr. and Mrs. Azeez in Lagos State but originally hails from Ogun State, Nigeria. [5] [6] He was raised in Agege, Lagos State and completed his primary education at Lively Kiddies Nursery and Primary School. He had his secondary education at Boys Secondary School Agege, Lagos State. [7]

Zinoleesky discovered his passion for music as he approached adolescence. He officially started his music journey as a freestyle rapper but became popular in 2017 after his videos went viral on the internet. [8] [9]

Several reports showed that he was offered a record deal by Davido's DMW label but refused to accept the offer and chose to work as an independent artist. [10] [11] On 23 December, 2019, he was signed to the record label "Marlian Records" which is owned and managed by Nigerian singer, Naira Marley. [12]

Zinoleesky released his first studio album titled "Chrome Eccentric" in 2020, a year after he was signed into the Marlian Records label. The album comprised six tracks, including the songs "Mapariwo" and "Kilofeshe". [13] In September 2020, Ma Pariwo ranked as No. 14 on Apple Music Chart and No. 12 on YouTube Chart. [14]

A year after the release of his first album, Zinoleesky created a remix to the hit song "Kilofeshe" featuring Maryorkun and South African singer, Busiswah. [15]

In December 2022, he released his first EP album "Grit and Lust", containing tracks such as Call of Duty and YanYanYan. [16]

Zinoleesky was born in Ogun State, Nigeria . After his birth, he moved to Lagos state, where he grew up and started his music career through freestyling on the street. before the he got a record deal into marlians record by Naira Marley . [5] [6] He is also a good stage performer. [7]
