Recent News

Virat Kohli (born November 5, 1988, Delhi, India) is an Indian international cricketer considered by many as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the game . Kohli plays for (and previously captained) the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is also a former captain of the Indian cricket team in all three international formats—Test cricket, one-day internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 internationals (T20I)—making him one of India’s most successful captains.

Kohli has earned praise for his discipline and commitment from teammates, opponents, and cricket veterans alike. “He has changed the face of cricket and how you prepare for the game. The discipline that he has stands out, always,” cricketing great Brian Lara said of Kohli after Kohli was named Player of the Tournament for the 2023 Cricket World Cup .

Kohli holds several cricket records, including the most individual hundreds in ODI matches and the most runs scored in a single edition of an ODI World Cup. He has been named Player of the Tournament at global events on three occasions: at the 2014 and 2016 T20I World Cups and the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kohli was also a member of the Indian sides that won the 2011 ODI World Cup, the 2013 ICC (International Cricket Council) Champions Trophy, and the 2024 T20I World Cup. He announced his retirement from Twenty20 international cricket after India won the 2024 T20I World Cup. Kohli’s announcement came after he was declared Player of the Match. Kohli is married to popular Bollywood actress and producer Anushka Sharma.

Virat Kohli was born on November 5, 1988, in Delhi , India. He grew up in Delhi and was one of the first to train at the West Delhi Cricket Academy, created in 1998. In 2002 he played for the Delhi Under-15 team and was the highest run scorer in the 2003–04 Vijay Merchant Trophy, playing for the Delhi Under-17 team.

In February 2006 Kohli made his domestic debut for Delhi in a one-day match against Services (a team representing the Indian armed forces) but did not get a chance to bat. He scored only 10 runs in his first-class debut ( first-class cricket refers to matches that last three or more days and feature two sides of 11 players each) against Tamil Nadu in November that year. He scored 90 runs in difficult conditions in a first-class match against Karnataka in December, helping Delhi draw the Test. In April 2007 he scored 35 runs in his T20 domestic debut against Himachal Pradesh .

Kohli captained the Under-19 Indian cricket team to victory at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia, in 2008. His exploits were rewarded with an IPL contract from RCB for $30,000. He also made his international debut in an ODI that year, opening the batting and scoring 12 in a defeat of Sri Lanka in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. In 2009 he scored 405 runs in nine innings in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, ensuring that he would be at the top of the national team selectors’ minds.

Virat Kohli has played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore throughout his IPL career and is the only player to have played for just one franchise in IPL history. His first two seasons for RCB did not yield much in the way of runs, but he had some standout performances after his promotion to vice captain in 2010. Ahead of the 2011 IPL auctions, teams were mandated by league officials to retain up to four players each. Kohli was the only player RCB retained, for $1.8 million. He played some key knocks (innings) as RCB reached the league final but lost to Chennai Super Kings that year.

Kohli was appointed captain in 2013 and continued to lead RCB in the next eight seasons. He was retained once again in 2014 for $1.6 million. In 2015 he moved up the order to open the batting, and his scores subsequently improved. The following year was a landmark season for him as he scored 973 runs with 4 hundreds, earning the Orange Cap for leading run scorer that year, a single-season record he holds as of 2023. Unfortunately, RCB lost in the league final to the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Kohli was retained in 2018 for $2.1 million but struggled to score as freely as he did in 2016. In 2022 he was retained again for $2 million but relinquished the captaincy, which went to Faf du Plessis. Kohli has since captained on occasion when du Plessis has been injured. Kohli is the highest individual run scorer in the history of the IPL, but RCB’s lack of titles has frustrated his fans.

Kohli’s strong run of scores led to a long stint with the national team. He scored his first ODI hundred in 2009 against Sri Lanka. A part of the Indian team at the 2011 ODI World Cup, Kohli scored a hundred in his World Cup debut against Bangladesh. He would go on to score a crucial 35 runs in the final as India won the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

Kohli debuted in Tests later in 2011 against the West Indies , as players such as Sachin Tendulkar were rested after the World Cup win. In the disastrous tour of Australia in 2011–12, India lost the Test series 4–0, but Kohli scored the only century by an Indian player on the tour, earning praise. He was by now establishing himself as a master of the chase in ODIs. In the 2012 Commonwealth Bank Series tournament with Australia and Sri Lanka, India needed to chase Sri Lanka’s score of 320 in only 40 overs to claim a crucial bonus point and stay in contention for the final. Kohli’s unbeaten 133 in 86 balls helped India score the required runs in just 36.4 overs, but India eventually failed to qualify as Sri Lanka beat Australia in the last qualifying match.

Kohli was appointed vice captain of the ODI team for the 2012 Asia Cup, and, though India failed to reach the final, Kohli recorded his highest ODI score of 183 in a successful run chase against Pakistan and ended the tournament as the highest run scorer. Kohli was a part of the Indian squad that won the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy and was the top scorer with 43 runs in the final against England.

Upon the retirement of his idol Tendulkar in 2013, Kohli took over the crucial number four batting position in Tests and showed he had earned the spot by scoring 119 and 96 across the two innings in a drawn Test against South Africa at Johannesburg. In the second match of a 2013 ODI series against Australia, Kohli scored a century in just 52 balls, the fastest by an Indian player as of 2023, as India successfully chased the target of 360 set by Australia with 39 balls to spare. In the sixth match, he scored a hundred in 61 balls as India successfully chased 350.

Kohli was the highest run scorer at the 2014 T20I World Cup, playing a key role in India’s semifinal win over South Africa. He was the top scorer in the final as well, a match that India lost to Sri Lanka. Kohli subsequently struggled on India’s multi-format tour of England that year, leading many to question his abilities. In the 2015 ODI World Cup, he scored one century against Pakistan but otherwise met with difficulty. In the 2016 Asia Cup, his run of scores helped India reach the final and win the title. In the 2016 T20I World Cup, he was again Player of the Tournament, and he was the top scorer in a successful chase against Australia as well as in the semifinal, which India lost to the eventual champion West Indies.

Virat Kohli first stood in as captain in a 2013 three-country series in the West Indies when MS Dhoni , the Indian captain at that time, was injured, and continued to lead for the rest of the series. He subsequently led India in an ODI series against Zimbabwe when several senior players were rested. Kohli also captained India in the 2014 Asia Cup in Dhoni’s absence, scoring one hundred, but India failed to reach the final.

Kohli has always been an aggressive batsman, and he showed this facet in his first Test captaincy, when Dhoni was injured before a match against Australia in Adelaide in 2014. Not content with a century in his captaincy debut in the first innings, Kohli showed he would not play for a draw as many past Indian captains had, scoring 141 in the second innings as India came close to chasing a challenging 364. After Dhoni returned for the second Test, Kohli took over again in the third with Dhoni injured again and scored a century and a fifty as India drew the Test. Dhoni retired after the match, leading to Kohli being announced as the official Test captain from the fourth match onward.

Captaincy seemed to agree with Kohli in Tests, where he hit his first double century, against the West Indies in 2016, followed by another double against New Zealand the same year, leading India to wins in both series. He hit double hundreds in his next two series against England and Bangladesh as well, becoming the first batsman to hit double centuries in four consecutive series.

Kohli captained India at the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, but India lost to Pakistan in the final. Kohli scored two double centuries that year in a Test series against Sri Lanka. He continued to score ODI hundreds. On the 2018 tour to England, he rectified his poor run from the last England tour with a series of good scores, leading India to one win, but the team was defeated in close matches and lost the series 4–1. The same year Kohli became the 13th batsman to score 10,000 runs in ODIs, becoming the fastest to do so, in a full 54 innings fewer than Sachin Tendulkar had, previously the fastest.

The crowning glory of his captaincy career came on the 2018–19 tour of Australia, when the Kohli-led India side won its first Test series in Australia. In the process Kohli scored his 25th Test hundred.

Kohli was named captain of the Indian team for the ODI World Cup in 2019. He scored five fifties in the tournament, which many considered below expectations for a player of his caliber . India lost to New Zealand in the semifinals, but Kohli became the fastest to 20,000 international runs across formats during the tournament. In a Test series against South Africa later that year, he scored his highest Test score of 254 not out. He was an all-format captain by now. He led India to Australia on the 2020–21 tour but returned home for the birth of his daughter after India’s defeat in the first Test. He was unable to return to Australia because of COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions and watched from India as Ajinkya Rahane rallied an injury-hit Indian side to a 2–1 series victory.

Kohli’s performance subsequently dipped across formats, and he was not to hit another century for a few years, though he continued to score several fifties. During this period, India lost to New Zealand in the final of the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021 and failed to qualify for the knockout round in the 2021 T20I World Cup. Kohli subsequently resigned from T20I and ODI captaincy, both positions being taken over by Rohit Sharma .

In 2022 Kohli stepped down from Test captaincy, and Sharma took over. Kohli had captained India in a record 68 Tests, winning 40 of them. He has been the most successful Indian captain by some distance with series wins both home and away, and his record compares favorably with great captains across eras.

After poor performances for a few years, Kohli finally returned to form in spectacular fashion, scoring his first T20I hundred against Afghanistan in the 2022 Asia Cup, but India failed to qualify for the final. He was the top scorer in the 2022 T20I World Cup, in which India lost in the semifinals to eventual winner England. In that tournament he won high praise for his back-to-the-wall 82 not out in a successful chase against Pakistan.

In early 2023 Kohli got back to hitting ODI hundreds, beginning with a century against Sri Lanka. Against Australia, he scored his first Test century in three years in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad. He hit another ODI century against Pakistan in the 2023 Asia Cup.

Kohli broke several records at the 2023 ODI World Cup. He surpassed 1,000 runs in the calendar year in a match against Sri Lanka, marking the eighth time he had done so and breaking Tendulkar’s record of seven such instances. In the match against South Africa, incidentally on his birthday, Kohli equaled Tendulkar’s record, which many cricket analysts believed would never be broken, of 49 ODI hundreds. In the semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai, with Tendulkar in the audience, Kohli scored his record 50th ODI hundred. Kohli registered a half-century in the final, which India lost to Australia. He was adjudged Player of the Tournament for his 765 runs, a record for most runs in a single World Cup edition, breaking Tendulkar’s record (673) set in 2003.

Kohli wasn’t in good form in the 2024 T20I World Cup but he ended the series on a high, striking his first half-century of the tournament in the final match against South Africa, a match India won by 7 runs. Kohli declared his retirement from T20I cricket after he was declared Player of the Match.

Kohli received the Arjuna Award, India’s second highest sporting honor, from the government of India in 2013. In 2017 Kohli garnered the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award. In 2018 he received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (now the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award), India’s highest sporting honor. A stand at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi was renamed after Kohli in 2019.

Kohli has received multiple accolades from the cricketing world and governing bodies as well. His 133 not out versus Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia was voted the ODI batting performance of the year in the 2012 ESPNcricinfo Awards and is considered by many as his greatest performance ever. ICC named him the ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2012, 2017, and 2018, and Test Player of the Year in 2018. He made the ICC ODI Team of the Year in 2012, 2014, and 2016–19, having the additional role of captain in all instances save the first two. He also made the ICC Test Team of the Year from 2017 to 2019, each time as captain. In 2022 he was named to the ICC T20I Team of the Year. He also was selected for the ICC Men’s Team of the Decade for 2011–2020 in all three formats, having the additional role of captain in the Test team.

Virat Kohli Biography: “To become a good player, you need talent. To become a great player, you need an attitude like Virat Kohli’s,” – Sunil Gavaskar, former Indian cricket legend. Here we start the Virat Kohli biography which includes all the details about him.

There are some whose consistent success is admired by everyone. And then, there are others, who are so successful and consistent that if they fail even once, it takes everyone by surprise. Virat Kohli belongs to the second breed.

Seeing Sachin Tendulkar hang his boots in 2013 was painful. But the swift rise of King Kohli has alleviated the pain in no time. Both may be poles apart in their attitudes (one an epitome of gentleness. Other, ) or playing style, perhaps. But one thing (and the one that matters the most) similar between them is Consistency. Rarely one has the cricketing world seen such a consistent player like Virat Kohli.

And what a match-winner is he for India! Be it the 133* inning against Sri Lanka, famously dubbed as the Hobart Storm or the 182 in the classic chase against Pakistan in the 2012 Asia Cup, Kohli never failed to mesmerize us.

Life seems beautiful when Virat punches the ball through the covers. God knows how he manages to pierce the gap every time. Here’s one, just a treat to the eyes.

Already excited to know about Mr. Consistent? Well then, here’s all there is to know about Virat Kohli…

Virat Kohli Biography

Virat Kohli Biography: Virat’s cricketing journey began in the summer of 1998. Virat and his brother Vikas were ferried by their father Prem Kohli to a cricket camp in west Delhi.

It was a typical hot summer day and little did Rajkumar Sharma, coach of the West Delhi Cricket Academy, know that over 250 kids would brave this extreme weather.

Amongst these 250 kids was a young Virat who didn’t take much time to turn the eyeballs of Rajkumar. But not the way you would think!

Virat Kohli in Childhood

“I remember noticing this pretty chubby, pretty naughty sort of youngster, who was not even ten, registering enthusiastically” –  reads an excerpt from the book ‘Virat- The Making of a Champion’ in which coach Rajkumar describes his fond memory of Virat.

Virat was the youngest among the lot there. This meant that he had to work very hard to stay in line with the rest. And he did. The gritty youngster grilled and worked ever so hard under the watchful eyes of coach Sharma. Perhaps, these ‘extra’ efforts were the foundation stones of the modern-day Virat Kohli.

Virat played a tournament under Rajkumar held at the Delhi Development Authority’s Sports Complex ground in Hari Nagar. The tournament consisted of six games. Three league fixtures, a quarter-final, a semi-final and a final.

Rajkumar Sharma remembers that Kohli got out only once in the tournament. He was indeed the leading run-scorer in the tournament and was flamboyant with his shots.

But more than the tournament, the most memorable moment in young Virat’s career happened during the presentation ceremony when fast-bowler Ashish Nehra presented him with the ‘Player of the Tournament’. Nehra was a superstar back then, having just come back from an excellent 2003 World Cup campaign.

That was just the start of his career. And how far has Virat come from that incident? Well, the world saw the answer on 1st November 2017 when Ashish Nehra announced his retirement from international cricket in a T20I against New Zealand- under the captaincy of  Virat Kohli. Phew! That will take some time to sink!

Domestic Career

Virat Kohli Biography: Virat’s List A debut came on February 18, 2006, when he played for Delhi against Services. Though he didn’t get to bat in that inning, Delhi won the match comfortably by 233 runs. Virat went on to feature in over 273 List A matches.

Kohli’s Ranji Trophy debut came on November 23, 2006, against Tamil Nadu. The world got to see the youngster’s grit and commitment towards cricket in December when he decided to play for Delhi against Karnataka despite his father’s death the previous day. And despite the tragic incident, he went on to score a crucial 90 runs.

This incident was a turning point in Kohli’s life. “Overnight he became a much more mature person. He took every match seriously. He hated being on the bench. It’s as if his life hinged totally on cricket after that day,” his mother revealed later.

He went on to debut for the India Under-19 squad on the English tour that year. It was followed by a tour to Pakistan, where he returned home with an average of 58 in Test and 41.66 in ODIs.

The following season, he was a part of the Gautam Gambhir-led Delhi squad that won the Ranji Trophy in the 2007-08 season.

2008 U-19 World Cup

Virat Kohli Biography: Having performed well in the U-19 as well as the title-winning Delhi side, Virat was given the captain’s armband to lead the India U-19 side at the 2008 U-19 World Cup in Malaysia.

And that turned out to be an instrumental decision. Kohli would go on to lead the young squad to the title with a 12-run victory over England in the finals.

On a personal front, he scored a total of 165 runs in the group stage, including a century against West Indies.

In the semi-finals against New Zealand, with the team struggling at 40/2, he weaved a crucial partnership with Shreevats Goswami and hit a crucial knock of 43. India would go on to win the game by 3 wickets. Kohli has rightfully adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’.

While Virat Kohli got the better of Kane Williamson, the U-19 Kiwi captain, their paths would cross again a decade later at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. And this time, it was Williamson who had the last laugh…

Virat Kohli Debut

Virat Kohli Biography: As Virat Kohli played his teen life’s finest cricket in Malaysia, a group of men sitting in BCCI’s HQ in Mumbai were keenly watching his moves. This was the Indian Cricket selection committee, headed by K Srikkanth.

Srikkanth and his men were looking for a revival of the famed but ageing Indian batting lineup. With the coronation of MS Dhoni as the captain of the team in 2008, the process only accelerated. In Kohli, selectors envisioned a reliable batsman that would hold together the team’s rather fragile middle-order.

And with two main men – Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag – out injured, they wasted little time in getting him on board. Virat made his debut on August 18 2008, on the tour to Sri Lanka. He scored 12 runs then.

After a relatively dry spell of three games, Kohli seized the opportunity in the fourth game by hitting a match-winning, or perhaps series win ning knock of 54 runs. India ultimately won the series 3-2.

Despite coming in and out of the senior team, Kohli was making his mark. This was rewarded by his selection in the 4-team Emerging Players Tournament held between July and August 2009 in Australia.

In the seven games that he played, the 19-year-old scored a massive 398 runs at an average of 66.33, thus ending up as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Kohli also proved that he was arguably the best batting prodigy in the world at that moment.

Kohli singled out the tournament as the “turning point” of his career. “That boosted my confidence tremendously. I just became so much more mentally stronger. I have now learned to bat in pressure conditions.

From that time, I have just been concentrating on my game and not thinking about other things,” he said at a press conference in 2010.

Virat Kohli Biography: An injury to Gautam Gambhir provided another lucky recall for Kohli, again for a series against Sri Lanka. In the following tournaments including the 2009 Champions Trophy and the series against Australia.

It was in the 4th ODI of the Sri Lankan series that Kohli hit his first century.  His 224-run stand with Gautam Gambhir prompted the latter to hand his ‘Man of the Match’ award to Kohli.

As he grew in performance over the next few years, Kohli started to regularly feature for India. 2010 was a path-breaking year for him. Virat finished the year with 995 runs at an average of 47.38, making him the highest run-scoring batsman.

And this was a phenomenal achievement for a 22-year-old who was still finding his place amongst established biggies. The year 2010 was really crucial in cementing Virat’s place in India’s starting XI.

Virat Kohli in 2009 Champions trophy

Virat Kohli Biography: The title ‘Chase Master Kohli’ which has been conferred to Virat Kohli is more than enough to describe his ODI career. There have been very few in the history of cricket with such a level of consistency.

Kohli has surpassed legends like Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakarra, and Jacques Kallis in the list of most centuries by a batsman. He is threateningly close to the record of 49 ODI centuries. Kohli currently has 43 ODI centuries.

Just to refresh the memories, Kohli made his debut in ODIs against Sri Lanka on August 18, 2008. Kohli was recognized as the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2012 and has won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, given to the ICC Cricketer of the Year, on two occasions, in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Subsequently, Kohli also won ICC Test Player of the Year and ICC ODI Player of the Year awards in 2018, becoming the first player to win both awards in the same year. In 2013, Kohli reached the number-one spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen for the first time.

Virat Kohli was appointed the Vice Captain of the ODI team in 2012 and handed over the Test captaincy following Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Test retirement in 2014. In early 2017, he became the limited-overs captain as well after Dhoni stepped down from the position.

In the Australia tour of India 2020, Virat Kohli beats Tendulkar’s record to become the fastest cricketer to score 12,000 ODI runs.

On December 9, 2021, the apex cricketing body removed Virat Kohli as ODI skipper and justified the move by saying they did not want to separate captains for white-ball format.

On October 19, 2023, Virat Kohli became the fastest ever to complete 26,000 runs in International cricket. Virat reached this milestone in just 577 innings while Sachin scored 26000 international runs in 601 innings.

On November 5, 2023, in the World Cup 2023 group match against South Africa Virat scored his 49th ODI century and equals Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries.

Test Career

Virat Kohli Biography: While there has been a prolonged debate about “Smith vs Kohli: Who’s the best test batsman of this generation”, there is one thing that can never go unnoticed. Be it any format, Kohli is always the center of comparison. It’s either Kane Williamson vs Kohli or Joe Root vs Kohli if not Smith.

Such has been the impact of this champion player “Virat Kohli”. Virat stands fourth on the list of players with the most double centuries in test cricket, only behind Bradman, Sangakarra, and Brian Lara.

Kohli achieved the highest-ever test rating for any Indian batsman – 937 against England on 22nd August 2018. The second Indian on the list is Sunil Gavaskar with a rating of 917.

Kohli masquerades a strong test record with 26 centuries and 22 half-centuries in 82 matches.

Virat Kohli stepped down as Test skipper on January 15, 2022, a day after India’s Test series loss in South Africa. Virat steps down with the fourth-most wins as captain in Test cricket, with 40 wins from 68 games. Of the other 28, 11 were draws, and 17 were losses.

  • Kohli amassed 81 runs in three innings of the two-match test series in the Sri Lanka tour of India in 2022 and completed a hundred Test matches. He becomes the 12th Indian cricketer to play this count in test format.
  • Kohli was named in India’s test squad for India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2022-23 where he scored only 45 runs in four innings of the two test matches he played.
  • It was his 29th test century and became the first player to score 50+ score in the 500th international match.
  • He smashed 76 runs in the first test match on July 12 where India won the match by an innings and 32 runs.
  • During the second test played on July 20, 2023, he smashed 121 runs in the first innings but did not get a chance to bat in the second innings. The match finally concluded in a draw.
  • He smashed 38 and 76 runs in the first test match played between December 26 and 28 where India lost the match by an innings and 42 runs.
  • He scored 58 runs in the second test played between Jan 03 and 04, 2024 where India won the match by seven wickets.
  • He withdrew from England’s tour of India in 2024 due to the birth of his second child in London.

Virat Kohli in test match

Virat Kohli Biography: The first T20 match between Zimbabwe and India in India’s tour of Zimbabwe, saw Kohli make his T20 international debut. To be specific about the date, it was the 12th of June, 2010.

And Kohli had a brilliant debut! He scored a crucial 26 not out from 21 balls apart from stitching an unbeaten 64-run partnership with Yusuf Pathan in the chase to see India home.

If you look at that day and compare it with Kohli of today, things have changed exponentially. He is the captain of the Indian national team across all formats. He averages 50 in the T20I format itself!

On 6th December 2019, Kohli again gave evidence of his supremacy in the chase game against West Indies by scoring an unbeaten 94, his highest score in T20Is, and helping India chase down a massive total of 207 runs. This was the Men in Blue’s highest run-chase in T20I.

During the 2014 T20 World Cup, he set a record for the most runs scored in the tournament. In 2018, he achieved yet another milestone, becoming the world’s top-ranked Test batsman, making him the only Indian cricketer to hold the number one spot in all three game formats.

Virat Kohli Biography: Virat represents the breed of players who have been a part of only one franchise since the inception of IPL. Mind you! It’s a rare breed. Inducted into the Royal Challengers Bangalore side in the year 2008, Kohli has been the face of the franchise.

  • Kohli was given the responsibility of leading the side in 2013 and has been leading since. There cannot be a tournament in which Kohli doesn’t leave his mark.
  • In the IPL season of 2016, Kohli sent down the records shattering. He scored a whopping 973 runs in that season with 4 hundred and 7 fifties! That’s a pretty serious record.

David Warner stands second in the list of most runs in an IPL season with 848 runs. At the moment, Kohli is the only player to score 6000+ runs in IPL.

  • Following the completion of the IPL 2021 season, Virat Kohli stepped down as RCB captain and continued to play for the franchise.
  • During the IPL 2022 season he had a poor run scoring 341 runs in 16 matches he played.
  • Virat Kohli has an impressive run during the 2023 season amassing 639 runs with a high score of 101* runs and an average of 53.25.
  • During the opening match of the IPL 2024 campaign against CSK, he smashed 21 runs on 20 deliveries, he crossed the rare feat of being the first Indian cricketer to score 12,000 runs in the T20 format.
  • He smashed an impressive 77 runs on 49 deliveries on RCB’s second match of the campaign against Punjab Kings where the former side won the match by four wickets. With these runs, Virat Kohli has 100 50+ scores in T20.
  • During the RR vs RCB clash on April 6 in Jaipur, Virat becomes the first batter to score 7500 runs in the IPL tournament. In the same match, Virat scored the first century of the IPL 2024, also his 8th in IPL.

Virat Kohli Biography Starts – He was born in a Punjabi family based in Delhi. Virat Kohli’s father, Prem Kohli, was a criminal lawyer and his mother Saroj, is a homemaker. Virat has two older siblings, a brother – Vikash, and a sister – Bhavna.

When he was hardly three years old, Virat started showing signs of a cricketing career. His father was the one to notice and encourage this talent. He took Kohli to West Delhi Cricket Academy when he was just nine. Rajkumar Sharma was his first coach there and knew right from the beginning that this lad was meant for greatness.

Along with cricket, Virat Kohli was an excellent student in academics as well. His father gave him unconditional support to chase his dreams. Unfortunately, his father couldn’t witness his legendary achievements.

When Kohli was just 19, his father passed away due to a stroke. Even then, Kohli showed up in the field the very next day and played a crucial knock for his team in the ongoing Ranji tournament.

“I still remember the night my father passed away as it was the hardest time in my life. But the call to play the morning after my father’s death came instinctively to me. I called my (Delhi) coach in the morning. I said I wanted to play because for me not completing a cricket game is a sin. That was a moment that changed me as a person. The importance this sport holds in my life is very, very high,” Kohli told NDTV.

But February 20, the couple took Instagram handle to reveal the birth of their second child.

“With abundant happiness and our hearts full of love, we are pleased to inform everyone that on 15th February, we welcomed our baby boy Akaay & Vamika’s little brother into this world! The Inspiration

Virat Kohli Biography: The legend himself, Sir Vivian Richards said that Kohli reminds of himself. Virat Kohli has always considered Sachin Tendulkar his inspiration. He says on his website www.viratkohli.club, “He’s (Tendulkar) been my inspiration. After seeing his knocks in Sharjah, I really got inspired to do something like that for India, win games single-handedly. I used to dream of doing something like that for the country, the way he used to win us games,” he said.

“I wouldn’t sit and think that I’ve done something similar because at that time I don’t think anyone else in the team scored apart from him in those two games. Now, there are others like Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.”

Virat Kohli player profile

India has given to the world many a great cricketer but perhaps none as ambitious as Virat Kohli. To meet his ambition, Kohli employed the technical assiduousness of Sachin Tendulkar and fitness that was in the league of top athletes in the world, not just cricketers. As a result, Kohli became the most consistent all-format accumulator of his time, making jaw-dropping chases look easy, and finding, in his own words, the safest possible way to score runs. Plenty of them.

This ambition transferred seamlessly to his captaincy: he demanded more than ever of his bowlers especially the quick ones, often sacrificed a batsman for bowling depth, and led India to a long stay at No. 1 in Test rankings and a first-ever series win in Australia. He is well on his way to end up as India's most successful Test captain.

Barring one in Bangladesh, Kohli scored Test hundreds in and against every country he played. He absolutely smashed records for number of matches taken to reach eight, nine, ten and eleven thousand ODI runs, and became the first batter to score 50 hundreds in one-day internationals.

An Under-19 world Cup-winning captain, when he burst onto the scene, Kohli was a precocious talent with a cover drive to kill for. He was destined to be India's next big batsman as the Tendulkar era began to retire, but Kohli wanted to be more: a cricketer whom the opposition would be in awe of, a cricketer whose presence would raise the intensity of the contest. He lived every ball, competed each moment, and made sure he had the fitness and strength to do so. He was widely credited for changing the fitness culture in Indian cricket, introducing endurance tests as a criterion for selection.

Kohli was quite simply India's most powerful captain. Centre of every marketing campaign for Indian cricket, he also happened to lead at a time when the BCCI was run by interim administrators who knew better than to draw the ire of Indian cricket's biggest star. There was never any cause to doubt his intent: to do things that will win matches for India, which they did plenty under him.

His debut was in place of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag and he followed MS Dhoni as captain.

Since then, he has been incomparable.

Kohli made his ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup debut in 2011 as the second youngest member of India’s victorious squad at just 22 – though he had already made 45 ODI appearances by the start of the tournament, such was the regard with which he was held in.

His India debut did not foreshadow what was to come, Kohli dismissed for just 12 against Sri Lanka, but it did not take him long to make an impact and he brought up a maiden half-century in his fourth game.

A first hundred came over a year later but the Delhi native had to be patient and wait for the absence of some Indian greats to nail down a place in the side.

Kohli came in for a rested Tendulkar during a tri-nation ODI tournament at the start of 2010, seizing his opportunity with another century.

Away from the pitch, Kohli was something of a conundrum but for his captain at the time, Dhoni, the team liked Kohli just the way he was.

He said: "It's important for him to be himself. You have to show off what you are and he has matured now.

“To us, he comes as a humble guy. He might come across differently to the world.

"Being a good human being is important, but it can come later, what's important now is that he [Kohli] scores on the field.”

Kohli ended the year as India’s leading run-scorer in ODIs with an average of 47.38 and with it came a spot in the 2011 World Cup squad on home soil.

He set the tone with a century in the tournament’s opening game before rebuilding with Gambhir in the final following the early departures of Sehwag and Tendulkar, making 35 to help India on the path to an historic triumph.

From there, a Test debut came and emboldened by a brief stint as ODI captain in 2013, scoring a century in just his second match as skipper, Kohli began to break records.

Against Australia, he hit the fastest ODI century by an Indian and fastest against the Aussies, reaching three figures from just 52 balls.

A first century as Test captain followed in 2014, Australia again the opponents, while standing in for Dhoni before taking over the reins full-time mid-way through the series.

Captaincy requires the shouldering of expectations, the weight of the nation rests with you and when the nation totals hundreds of millions of people, the weight could be unbearable.

But for Kohli, it was a spark for some of the greatest years of his career.

In 2016 and 2017, he scored a double century across four consecutive Test series, overtaking a record held by Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid.

No one could keep up with Kohli. He was awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year in 2017, repeating the feat the next year.

His trophy cabinet was further filled in 2018, with ICC Men's Test Player of the Year and ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year gongs, also being named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People.

During this time, Kohli passed 10,000 ODI runs, the fastest man to that milestone, achieving the feat in 54 fewer innings than the previous quickest, Tendulkar.

A downturn in form ultimately culminated in him stepping down first from the T20 captaincy, then ODIs and finally Tests.

But the old saying about form being temporary and class permanent rang true as he scored his first hundred in 1020 days in 2022, smashing 122 runs from 61 deliveries against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup for his first T20I century.

The King was back, and the fired-up youngster of his early years was replaced by a beaming father figure.

He said: "The last two and a half years have taught me a lot.

“Those angry celebrations are a thing of the past.

“I have had many suggestions, lots of advice has come my way; people were telling me I was doing this wrong, that wrong.

“I picked out all the videos from the best time I had, same initial movement, same approach towards the ball and it was just what was happening inside my head, I wasn't able to explain it to anyone."

Kohli has since passed 500 games for India and his career is coming close to completing a full revolution as the tournament that put him and the rest of the 2011 squad into folklore returns to India’s shores.

Kohli is the sole successful player from the class of 12 years ago to be part of India’s squad this time around. To complete the circle, both he and India will hope he ends the 2023 edition holding the trophy again.

You just don’t understand how to get over it. That was a phase when I literally couldn’t do anything to overturn things…I felt like I was the loneliest guy in the world.”
I’ve decided to step down as the T20 captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October.”

He elaborated,

Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all three formats and captaining regularly for last five to six years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead Indian team in Test and ODI cricket.

He further added,

I have given my everything to the Team during my time as T20 captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 team as a batsman moving forward.”
It has been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it is now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey: but never had there been a lack of effort or a lack of belief.”
I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it is not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to the team.”

While giving thanks to Shatri & Co., he said,

Ravi Bhai and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved up in Test Cricket consistently. You all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life. Lastly, a big thank you to M.S. Dhoni who believed in me as captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian cricket forward.”
One thing I can tell you is when I gave up Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person who I’ve played with before — M. S. Dhoni.”

He also criticised those who gave suggestions on TV debates but never approached him. He added,

Virat Kohli Biography, Facts, Records and Family life

Virat Kohli is a famous Indian cricketer, who has entered the history of cricket with his sporting achievements. According to many worldwide analytical sources, he is currently considered one of the best batsmen in the world.

Virat Kohli

Today, Virat Kohli, at the age of 35, leads the Indian national team and the Indian Premier League club Royal Challengers Bangalore in the status of captain. This article describes the main highlights, insights and achievements of this great player.

In 1988, a boy Virat was born in the Punjabi Kohli family, who at that time lived in Delhi. The family of the future champion and legend of cricket belonged to the middle class, having a steady income. It was thanks to this that he, his brother and sister grew up in favorable conditions. Parents have made a lot of efforts to ensure that their children grow up not only healthy, but also receive timely education.

When was the first time Virat Kohli played cricket?

Kohli’s first exposure to cricket took place at an early age. Already at the age of 3, under the supervision of his father, the boy picked up a bat for the first time and tried to make the first shots at the ball. Seeing in their son good physical abilities and an interest in sports, the parents decided to develop these abilities. Soon, his father sent little Virat to the sports academy, where his childhood coach was Rajkumar Sharma. Even then, the coaches noted in the boy the presence of good physical condition and a great desire to learn.

Where did Virat Kohli study?

First achievements and participation in significant cricket tournaments.

The most curious thing is that the number of runs the young athlete was constantly growing. For the next season, as part of the Vijay Merchant Trophy tournament, this figure has already amounted to 470 runs in 4 matches. The phenomenal results achieved by the young athlete drew the attention of the scouts of the junior Indian national team to him. After a short negotiation in the presence of his father, Virat signs a contract and becomes a national team player. In 2006, he made his first significant appearance in the Indian national team – participation in a cricket tournament in England.

At this tournament, the Indian national team won the series, and the young Kohli contributed to the success of the national team to a large extent with his game. After the tournament, the leading manager of the Lalchand Rajput team spoke very flatteringly about the young and promising cricketer. In the same season, in November, he played his debut match for the adult Delhi team, which met with the Tamil Nadu team.

When Virat Kohli’s father died?

In December 2007, 19-year-old Virat loses his father, who died after a serious illness. However, even a family tragedy does not stop a young man from participating in the tournament. The next day, he takes the field in a match against the Karnataka team and achieves excellent results.

Already in February 2008, Virat Kohli became the captain of the Indian U-19 national team and took part in his first World Cup. At this tournament, “Chiki” worked not only with the bat. His 235 points scored in 6 matches, including centuries, contributed to the sensational victory of the Indian national team. The result of the athlete’s performance is an average of 47 points per game.

How Virat Kohli started his career?

The success of the junior national team did not go unnoticed. At the end of the tournament, Kohli was offered his first professional contract with the Indian Premier League club Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The successful start of his youth sports career gave an impetus to the rapid start of the young Virat in big sports. First, he was included in the Indian national team, which went to play a series of matches against Sri Lanka in the ODI.

At that time, the situation in the national team was critical. The leading players of the team, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, were seriously injured, so Virat Kohli had a serious burden. However, the newcomer of the team did not fade away and managed to become a worthy replacement for the retired stars of the Indian team. He has 50 points in five matches of the series. For a young athlete who played at such a high level for the first time, such a result can be regarded as an achievement.

In which year Virat Kohli debut in international cricket?

In 2009, the time came for the first success in the international arena. In the game against the Sri Lankan national team, Virat Kohli, paired with Gautam Kambhir, managed to win their position, eventually bringing their national team a well-deserved victory. Kambhir himself presented the young sportsman with the prize of the best player of the match after the match. The following year, 2010, was filled in the career of a rising star with participation for the Indian national team in international tournaments in Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

Further experience and improvement of results in international games.

The next series in Australia was initially unsuccessful for Kohli, however, at the insistence of the then captain of the Indian national team, Mahendra Dhoni, he was entrusted to continue playing in the national team. As a result, the young player lived up to the expectations placed on him, making his first hundred in the test in Adelaide.

The following year 2012 became a landmark in Virat Kohli’s career. First, as part of the ODI, he and the Indian national team defeated the Sri Lankan national team at a tournament in Hobart (Tasmania). It was in these matches that significant progress in batting became noticeable, especially in limited overs. A promising player at that time even received a belt for 24 wounds he made.

In the following years, Kohli continued to play for both the Indian national team and his professional club in the Indian Premier League. However, not everything was so smooth in his career. For example, many noted that his defense technique suffers. According to coaches and experts, the player sometimes lacked the necessary pace in attack. This was especially evident in the 2014 matches, when Virat managed to score only 134 runs from 10 innings.

Nevertheless, after a short break in performances, which was spent on perfecting and honing techniques, today’s cricket legend managed to return to the big sport. Already during the tour of England, he became the best among the mile runners.

Personal life events

In 2013, Virat Kohli begins dating film actress Anushka Sharma. The young people met at one of the presentations of a sports brand held in Mumbai. Considering that from that moment on, the cricketer’s family began to appear in public together, the press and television quickly stuck the nickname “Virushka” on the young people.

Despite numerous gossips and rumors, the wedding took place only four years later. Virat and Anushka got married in December 2017 in Florence, Italy.

When was Virat Kohli daughter born?

On January 11, 2011, there was a replenishment in the Kohli family. A daughter was born in the family of the famous cricketer. This event has left a big imprint on the frequency of cricket performances. Virat leaves the Indian national team for a short time. His matches for the Royal Challengers Bangalore club become rare. However, the break in his playing career did not last long. A year and a half later, he returns to the big sport, becoming an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team.

In 2015, Virat Kohli plays in the Indian national team at the World Cup, scoring a hundred in the first match against Pakistan. Despite the fact that the Indian national team still dropped out of the tournament, Kohli has established himself as one of the best batsmen in the ODI format. The following year, Chiku was one step away from realizing his most cherished dream, to become the T20 world champion with the Indian national team. However, a number of failures in the middle tier brought all hopes for the long-awaited title to naught.

The beginning of a sports career in tests took place for Kohli in a calm rhythm. However, his records and achievements in this format were not long in coming. In 2017, Chiku earned the title of the first batsman to score 4 hundreds in four consecutive series in tests.

When Virat Kohli became captain of India?

In 2015, another landmark event in Virat Kohli’s sports career took place. The legendary Mahendra Dhoni left the big sport, and Virat took the place of captain of the national team. Already with the rank of captain of the national team, he and his team won the series against the Sri Lankan national team. By the way, the Indians have been striving for this success for 22 long years. Moreover, in the first test, the Indian national team lost, but managed to take revenge, winning the series with a score of 2-1. After the success in the test against Sri Lanka, it was the turn to show the strength of the Indian national team in the test against South Africa. The score in the series is 3-0.

Technique and skill

Over the years of his professional career, Virat has turned into a true master of the “chase”. At the same time, the results were achieved with a limited number of “overs”. His phenomenal achievements in games with 50 overs are well known to everyone. However, his achievements lacked knockouts at the World Championships. In the ODI format, Kohli managed to reach a score of 60 hundreds. In terms of the number of centuries scored, he is very close to breaking the record of the legendary Tendulkar.

Virat Kohli’s achievements in cricket

As a teenager, Virat already played for the Indian U-19 national team. In 2008, he and the team became world champions in the youth national teams format.

His adult career begins after Kohli made his debut for the Indian national team in a match against Sri Lanka in 2008. Virat currently has 35 ODI hundreds and a number of other impressive achievements. The record game was against Pakistan in 2012, when the “King” scored 183 points.

The legendary cricketer is also known for his success in test matches. His score is 50 points, 17 centuries and 14 half-centuries in 59 tests. At the beginning of 2019, Virat Kohli was recognized as the best player with the bat, both in the ODI format and in tests.

Why Virat Kohli is captain of India?

Along with his achievements in cricket, Kohli’s ability to lead the national team on the field is amazing. Moreover, his captaincy duties were equally successful in matches of all formats, both in ODI and in tests. Despite the fact that under Virat’s leadership, the Indian cricket team has not yet managed to achieve serious success in major tournaments, the Indian national team regularly occupies leading positions in the rankings, both in tests and in the ODI format.

Virat Kohli has the highest percentage of successful matches in tests as captain of the national team. The last triumph of the national team under his leadership was a 2-1 test series victory against Australia. Now all the questions about who is the best captain have disappeared by themselves. Throughout the tournament, the leader of the Indian national team showed a high level of strategy in every match.

Virat Kohli’s Century Against Bangladesh

Kohli’s seven-wicket victory was the result of 103 runs from 97 balls. He also helped the team when Hardik Pandya got injured. He sent off three innings and showed his diverse cricket game. Kohli’s century in this game proved the high skill of match planning.

A dramatic victory over Australia

The year 2008 was a life-changing year for Kohli. First, he captained the Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winning team. Second, he was bought by RCB for $30,000 on a youth contract for IPL. Third, he made his international debut.

After recovering from a minor injury, Kohli replaced Gambhir for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and batter at no. 4 in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy as Yuvraj Singh was recovering from an injury.

For the tri-nation ODI tournament in Bangladesh in 2010, Tendulkar was rested, thereby enabling Kohli to play in each match. Due to his phenomenal performance in Bangladesh, he was praised by the then captain MS Dhoni.

Kohli was part of the World Cup-winning team in 2011 and became the first Indian batsman to score a century on World Cup debut.

Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies at Kingston and performed poorly in the series, amassing just 76 runs in five innings. In 2015, he became the first Indian batsman to score a century against Pakistan in a World Cup match.

In August 2018, he ranked no. 1 in the ICC Test rankings. With this, he became the seventh Indian batter to achieve this milestone. He became the first Indian, first captain and tenth overall to hit three successive centuries in ODIs in October 2018.

For the tri-series in Zimbabwe in 2010, Raina was named captain while Kohli was made vice-captain. During this, he emerged as the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1,000 ODI runs.

He was appointed as vice-captain for the 2012 Asia Cup due to his excellent performance in Australia.

Kohli captained the 2013 West Indies tri-series winning team after Dhoni injured himself during the match. He also captained a five-match ODI tour of Zimbabwe, which India won by 5-0, their first in any away ODI series.

He was named vice-captain for the 2014 ICC World T20 Competition where India emerged as the runner ups and Kohli as Man of the Tournament as he amassed 319 runs in the tournament.

He led India in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka which India won by 5-0. It was the second whitewash under his captaincy and fourth in India's ODI history.

He led India in the first Test of the Australian tour and scored 115 runs in the first innings, thereby becoming the fourth Indian to score a hundred on his Test captaincy debut. Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the third match between India and Australia, and Kohli was appointed as the full-time Test captain ahead of the fourth Test at Sydney.

At Sydney, Kohli scored 147 in the first innings and became the first batter in the Test cricket history to score three hundred in his first three innings as Test captain. He was named as captain of the 'Team of the Tournament' for the 2016 World Twenty20 by the ICC.

He captained India in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. India entered the finals but lost to Pakistan. Kohli also captained the 2019 Cricket World Cup where India failed to reach the finals after losing the semi-final match against New Zealand. India's first whitewash under Kohli's captaincy was India's tour of New Zealand in 2020.

Virat Kohli Playing Style

Virat Kohli is celebrated for his aggressive playing style, a trait that extends to his leadership on the field. Kohli’s prowess as a skilled batsman is marked by his unwavering determination and boundless energy. Typically batting at number three in one-day cricket, Kohli’s distinctive stance, with a slightly open chest and a firm grip on the bottom of his bat, sets the stage for his exceptional performance. His quick footwork and diverse range of shots are commendable, making him a formidable force in leading innings, particularly in high-pressure situations. Kohli’s batting technique is composed and adaptable, allowing him to score runs between long-off and long-on with precision. Nevertheless, Kohli does have a well-known vulnerability when it comes to deliveries outside the off-stump. Bowlers often exploit this weakness, especially in Test and ODl matches, by targeting him with deliveries in this area. This susceptibility has led to Kohli’s dismissal on multiple occasions. Esteemed cricket experts like VVS Laxman and former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar have acknowledged this particular weakness. Even former New Zealand cricketer Richard Hadlee has noted that Kohli tends to struggle against out-swinging deliveries.
